Singin' aye, aye, aye, we'll fight until we die,
And our enemies are gone forever more!
Raining fire from above,
For the freedom that we love,
We are the Hounds of Heaven,
The mighty dogs of war!

Welcome to South Sotoa, kid.

So you've made the decision - you can't keep out of the skies any longer, and you just have to be a mercenary pilot. Well, you've come to the right place - South Sotoa at the moment doesn't have too many nations friendly to it, what with apartheid still in full swing. But you won't have to worry about that much - The government has provided us with a base with everything anyone could need, and so long as you don't go off-base, you won't have to deal with it. Off base, you're on your own, sorry.
Let's get on to the meat of the discussion, who we are, what we're here for, and what we're up against. First things first, once you sign up for our three-year contract, that's it. Your stuck, we own your ass. Literally. It's in the fine print that your ass belongs to us.
*ahem* Moving on. We are the 3rd Fighter Wing, 422nd Squadron, Mercenary, and operate by the name of Wolfhound Squadron, or by our callsign of Nameless. We operate mostly out of Mellville - we wanted a base in the capitol of Hoopwerk, or the larger, more well-defended Jamesonburg, but the SoSo government wouldn't give it to us. Oh well. We got our base, we got whatever planes we can afford, and we got a job to do.
Now onto that job, and why a democracy - and the economic powerhouse of the Sotoan Peninsula - would need to hire mercenaries. Two years ago, back in the spring of '84, the Valgan government was overthrown by the military, a military that wanted to bring Valga back to the old days, back when its cavalry was regarded with fear, and when it very nearly conquered the entire Verusan continent. To this end, it formed an alliance with a reactionary group in the neighboring People's Republic of Verusa, helped it stage its own coup, and proceeded to invade nearby Romny. In two weeks, Romny was split in half, with the north half under Verusan control and the southern half under Valgan control.
And SoSo, Yuktobania, and the rest of the world did nothing, because quite frankly Yuktobania was tired of Romny's shit anyway, and Romny didn't get along well with South Sotoa. Next to fall was Clavis, to the south, but that took a full year, lasting until the end of 1985, with Verusa only getting the southern strip of it. Now Yuktobania was a bit concerned, as were the other nations of the western Verusan continent, but still SoSo did nothing. And at last, in the early months of this year, Valga turned its sights on the Sotoan peninsula. In a bid to outflank potential resistance from the other side, they attacked Vedia, seizing two of the nation's main islands in a week. That got Parliament off their asses and led to them declaring war on Valga and Verusa, and forming a military alliance with Vedia.
That was six weeks ago. It's now April, and Valga has taken Krokola and Saidpur out of Vedian hands, with only their capitol remaining. Amirabad won't last long, even with our combined militaries backing it up. And two weeks ago, Valgan fighters opened fire on a South Sotoan frigate.

Welcome to South Sotoa. Welcome to the South Verusan War.
Here are the planes of note of the world, at least the ones that are 'reputably' for sale from our weapons supplier. We're not sure about the last one - South Belka Munitions hasn't made a plane of its own in years, only parts, and that price makes it seem like a joke. Your current price limit is $7 million though. Variants cost an extra 500 thousand, except for planes that cost less than 1.5 million, in which they cost 250 thousand. Deal with it.

You're lucky. The commanding officer of Naval Base Nelson is a bit of a map nerd, so you've got some pretty good maps.
This one is a map of the theatre of war, as well as indicating how much territory the Valgans and Verusans have taken so far. Note how they haven't touched Yuktobania. There are several thousand reasons for that, all of them nuclear.
This one is a good map that indicates the current borders of the world. Note how it clearly indicates what is and is not Valga or Verusa territory. Let's remind them of that, shall we?
This one was given to the commander, he says, by a man in a blue North Point police box. We think he's crazy. Firstly, this is South Sotoa so there's no need for a North Point police box, secondly, the TARDIS (and North Point police boxes in general) is green. Regardless. This map is more accurate for geography in most places, as well as the location of cities. It also has the flags of the world, including those of countries that don't exist yet.
This one also has the wrong borders, and doesn't even have South Sotoa on it. But it's accurate for topography, so there's that.
If you failed geography or don't know much about world cultures, this probably isn't the job for you. But just in case you need a refresher course:
Adamas is a medium-sized, red nation to the south of Osea, an ally of Yuktobania, and a thorn in the side of the Osean Federation ever since it went Communist in the 1950s. It is tolerated, and allowed to trade with Osea, because its foreign policy is rather neutral and it makes fantastic cigars. And because all it has is old MiGs and Osea could easily anschluss it if it so desired.
Amber is a nice little nation on the southern section of Usea that, for a brief period of time, controlled parts of Sotoa and Ugellas before Erusea nabbed the former and Ugellas gained independence. Makes some pretty good wine, though nothing could ever compare to Erusean. Has a decent military, too, though nothing compared to its neighbors.
Aurelia is an ancient nation, probably the oldest in the world, older even than Belka. Very recently it got into a brief border dispute between itself and Cayenne over who owns the islands to its south, which was settled out of battle, and Aurelia won. The IA-58 is manufactured here, though why Aurelia would specifically need a COIN craft is unknown when it already has a squadron of A-10s from Osea. It's a very peaceful nation that is mostly full of plains, steppes, and cattle. One of the few areas south of Osea that was never conquered by Sapin.
Belka is the military force of nature, or so it likes to think. While there's no doubting the global superiority of its air force, its navy leaves something to be desired. Besides military might, it is famous the world over for its beer, its automobiles, and Oktoberfest, which is held yearly in the industrial city of Hoffnung. It also has many beautiful landscapes, and historic areas to see, chief among them Stier Castle (just north of the capitol of Sudentor), and the city of Directus. Historically, it has been home to most of the world's knightly orders, and used them in the past to repeatedly attempt to conquer what is now Osea. While they succeeded several times, it never lasted long. In recent years, it has been beset with economic woes that only seem to be getting worse. The kind that end disastrously.
While not as bad as Carranza, Brasalium is still fairly bad. It has a decentish military, rich night life, entertaining culture, beautiful scenery... and crippling corruption, poverty, and favelas, partly due to it recovering from being under a military junta up until last year. Oh, and the cartels. But if you go there during Carnival, you'll be too distracted by Brasalium tits and Brasalium cachaça to care. Perhaps that's why its tourism industry is so strong. Much like Aurelia, it has a large farming industry to go along with its industrial industry, though Brasalium's is weaker, and currently encroaching on the South Osean Rainforest at an alarming rate.
Carranza is a great country to visit. The food is amazing, the tequila is even more amazing, the people are more amazing still. It has a sizable military, a massive silver industry, a respectable oil industry, and is one of the regional powers, along with Aurelia. It is also densely packed with heritage sites and rapidly accelerating economic growth. Sadly, it is also home to rapidly expanding cartel presence, not helped in the least by an extremely corrupt (and underfunded) police force.
Cayenne is a small nation, and the only inhabited site on the Antarctic Continent. As a result, it's very cold... or it would be were it not for Cayenne being intensely volcanic. The soil is fertile, giving birth to a bustling agriculture industry, and scenery good enough for a good tourism industry. Rumor has it that it has been selected for filming of the LoTR film series, if it ever gets out of developmental hell. Cayenne is interesting in that it has a disproportionately large air force, which it uses to make sure nobody is doing anything funny in Antarctica. And yet, is is very, very, neutral.
Central Sotoa must have the worst luck of any country on the planet. A government that's swimming in an ocean-sized pool of corruption, disease, famine, instability, a weak military, a nonexistent police force, and not enough tourism to drag its economy out of the hole. No, missionary work by the Sapin Catholic Church doesn't count.
Clavis may not have as long a history as its northern neighbor, Verusa, but it is by no means lacking in history. For over a millenium, starting in the 2nd century BC, it was either a puppet state or directly controlled by Imperial Verusa, before it managed to gain independence and... declare itself a kingdom, because that's what countries did back then. But unlike Verusa, Clavis' initial revolution - the democratic one it had in 1908 - was ultimately successful, and its later, communist revolution, supported by Verusa in 1947, failed. It soon began to prosper as a country with an impressive technology sector, boosted by trade with Osea. Of course that doesn't matter at the moment as it is being carved up by Valga.
Comona is small and irrelevant, with little military to speak of and an economy that depends on two things: Tourism and the space industry. It is home to Usea's primary space port, after all, and is damn proud of it. Half its tourism industry runs on it, and its military's second priority (after protecting the capitol) is protecting Riass Space Center. It is also home to a prestigious university which offers free entry to anyone who passes the entrance exam with a high enough grade.
Emmeria is a rather large nation in the extreme north of the world, occupying most of the Anean continent. It and Erusea both make fantastic wine, though Emmeria makes better cars. Especially sports cars. Nobody makes better sports cars than Emmeria, no matter what Oseans think. Its cuisine is also fantastic, and one of the most often (and incorrectly) copied by foreigners - pizza does not need cheese all over it. Fiat is headquartered here, and the G.91 fighter was developed with input from Belkan pilots and Belkan aircraft companies.
Erusea is a sizable nation occupying the western third of the Usean continent. It has fantastic cuisine, the best wine in the world, and makes the best small cars on Earth, as well as the smoothest-riding sedans you'll find anywhere, including North Point and Belka. It has an enormously powerful economy, second only to Osea, and a military that is small, but capable of taking on forces several times its size, thanks to its highly effective training regimens. Its people are probably the freest in the world, and it shows. It and Yuktobania are the largest national suppliers of aid to western Verusa, with Osea close behind.
Estovakia is smallish, coldish, and old. Its history dates back even further than Emmeria's, and is often referred to as the Cradle of Democracy. Unfortunately that cradle has been rocking a bit roughly in recent years, and the government is somewhat unstable, raking up massive debt to Osea, Emmeria and Belka, its largest trade partners. But, for the moment, it doesn't appear to be getting any worse, unlike Belka.
Fato has a sad history. It consists of voyaging across the Ceres Land Bridge into the Osean continent, spreading across its entirely, and eventually being squished into the small northeastern corner that First Oseans now call home by Belkans from the north, Nordlanders from the east, and Oseans from the south. Sucks, though it has since developed warm relations with all three countries. It has a sparse population, and is split roughly in half by mountains, though they at least provide spectacular skiing. Of note is that it considered developing nuclear weapons in the 1970s but decided against it, selling all its material to Erusea. As a result, they get along very well.
The IEU is interesting: It was once a nation that regularly went to war with North Point for reasons ranging from an assault from the former to boredom, and for years controlled most of the Sotoan Peninsula. Then it waged an unsuccessful war against the spread of Islam, got converted, and its economy promptly collapsed for two centuries before it tried again, failed again, and collapsed again, only this time for a short fifty years. It soon stabilized and became an important regional power, and resumed waging war on North Point for no apparent reason at all, up until the turn of the 20th Century. Has a very strong economy, and manufacturers the Mirage series of aircraft in its capital.
Indus is an ancient, small, densely packed nation, and the only neutral nation with nuclear weapons, which its words are backed by. It is fairly flat, volcanic, and prone to earthquakes, thus making its people resilient. Along with the dense jungles and pygmy tigers and cobras and other things. If Valga were to invade it, it would find it extremely difficult, everyone is trained in some way for combat and the entire country's infrastructure is rigged to blow if invaded. Also those nuclear weapons.
Kaluga doesn't have many friends, besides Sercia and Yuktobania. Its government isn't so much corrupt as regularly racked by explosive bouts of tribalism, which to this point have always almost (but not quite) brought it into a civil war. Hell some groups don't even like Yuktobania that much, and those groups are gaining power at an alarming rate - for Kaluga, as Yutkobania could crush it with little effort. Very Christian, from the government down. May or may not have secret plans to remove kebabs worldwide.
Karabastan is a fairly lucky nation, with great infrastructure, a respectable military, and high freedoms, best in the region. Tremendous amounts of oil and other resources, too, such as copper, fossil fuels, zinc, salt, gold, iron ore, and hundreds of other useful things. And thankfully, it has the governmental stability to mine them, resulting in a rather powerful industry. Sadly, its government can't really get much done, because its stability is caused by numerous tribalism-powered parties vying for power that are too separate to unite but too dedicated to democracy to try anything by force. There are also rumors that Yuktobania has been thinking of 'liberating' it from capitalism, but at the moment these are just rumors.
Leasath is probably the only democratic people's republic that is truly democratic in history. A single-party communist state that actually listens to its people? That's Leasath, though it isn't a hard thing to pull off when its population is so agreeable. Though it may also be because its economy is extremely weak and agricultural. And yet it can afford multiple squadrons of Flankers. Curious.
Levant is a shrewd nation full of shrewd people, with a long and storied history in part due to being the homeland of the Jews, who are very content to have managed to avoid being scattered like the breeze no fewer than three times. It has the least corrupt police force on Earth, and its judicial system was used as a model for that of the International United Nations. It also has a potent industry, specializing in weapons, technology, and agricultural machinery, with a nicely funded military to show for it. Said military is, like Erusea's, very small, but unlike Erusea's it is purely defensive. It is rumored to have nuclear weapons, though it is common knowledge that it has an anti-ballistic missile defense system that it shares with Tamudia and the rest of the Sotoan Peninsula.
For centuries, Nordennavik was as feared a nation as Valga, with its pagan warriors bringing terror from the Razgriz Straits to Gracemeria, pillaging, raping, and plundering wherever they went. Now, however, it is a small, frozen neutral state with a largely defensive military and a powerful technology and machinery industry. All of Anea uses its servers, from businesses to government work. Fensalir, its capitol, is home to the fastest supercomputer on Earth. And its people are happy to sip their mead and enjoy some of the best freedoms in the world.
Nordland is a small, neutral nation sitting across the Farbanti Sea from Erusea. Perhaps as a result, Erusea is its largest trade partner, and bears most of the effort in defending Nordland, should anyone decide to attack it - Nordland gets most of its money from timber, textiles and information technology, which isn't a very good reason to invade to begin with.
North Point, together with Sapin and Europa, once ruled the world. Apart from Erusea, the entire Usean continent was its bitch, along with Aurelia, Indus, and most of the Sotoan Peninsula - South Sotoa included, which in fact was the final colony to gain independence, 20 years after Perfanesia. And now? It's content to let Usea do all the work for it, as it sits back quietly and makes weird food, good ale, and fantastic spy movies. Oh, and Doctor Who.
Osea is the premier world power, the second in space, the first on the moon, the first to fly (no matter what Belka claims), and the first to develop a working nuclear weapon. It has the biggest military, the most carriers, the most planes, the largest economy, the most factories, the best hockey, the best maple syrup, the most reliably mediocre men's football team, and the most people decrying it as an imperialistic false democracy run by lizardmen. Not bad for the only colony North Point ever lost by war.
Perfanesia is tough. It's full of tough people, mostly descendants of the prisoners sent here from when it was a North Point penal colony. It's full of tough wildlife, like poisonous snakes, kangaroos, and duck-billed beavers with poison spikes on their feet. It's full of tough plants, like the gympie gympie whose leaves can create a salad whose first ingredient would be pain. It's got a tough-as-nails military, too, small but effective, the kind that South Sotoa would ask for help from but they would turn down because they don't ally with racists, which is extremely amusing to SoSos because for decades they had one of the most plainly anti-colored immigration policies in the world. Namely against the nations currently being attacked by Valga.
Rasheedi Tamudia is an enigma: It has Sharia Law, but is close allies with both Osea and Yuktobania. It has no nuclear weapons, but nobody would dare invade it. Is it because it's the birthplace of Islam? Is it because the holiest city of Islam, Imaan, is home to the most advanced defense network on Earth? Is it because of its conscript military and people who have endured numerous crusades, conquerings, and civil wars? Nah, it's because there's so much oil that one could create a gusher by poking a suitably pointed stick into the ground.
Ratio is an odd country. It has no presence. It has no nuclear weapons. It has a mixed economy with numerous industries, but nothing really stands out. Even its military is fairly plain, though by no means wak. The people don't seem to mind it, though. In fact they seem to enjoy their irrelevance. Nobody bothers them that way.
Romny is the land of Cossacks, of rolling, flat plains, mild weather, bountiful harvests, and Slavic capitalism. Like Yuktobania, it was an early adherent to socialism, but a brutal dicator in the 1930s, who genocided his people in all but name, soured the taste of it, and the country rebelled in the late '40s. Since then, however, it has maintained close ties with Yuktobania, though border disputes in recent years have soured that, too. Not that it matters, as it is in the process of being split between Valga and Verusa.
San Maritn's claim to fame was that it was where a certain Sapinese discoverer landed and stated one year to prove that, not only was the Earth round, but that it was tilted. Other than that, there's not much to note. It has a small military and a small but clean government, and relies mostly on Aurelia for trade.
San Salvacion is like Erusea's weaker, friendlier cousin. It doesn't have as strong a military - its is purely defensive and not as skilled - and it doesn't close its ports to anyone. As a partial result, international meetings between hostile nations are often held here - and why not? San Salvacion has no enemies. It has nice weather year-round, and has excellent relations with everyone, including its former master Sapin.
Sapin could be considered the last empire. Unlike its rivals Europa or North Point, it gave up the least territory when it ended its days of colonialism, even compared to Europa which had fewer colonies. It is still a military power, though not as strong as its neighbors Belka or Osea. But even so, its days as a superpower are long past. But it's all good - the economy of Sapin is post-industrial, the military is well-trained, and Sapin has a healthily low amount of debt. And as an extra bonus, it's surrounded on all sides by friendly nations. Life is good.
Sercia is a tiny nation nestled between Europa and Yuktobania, and allied only with the latter. The ancient home of the Sercian Knights, one of the few knightly orders outside of what is now Belka. And oh, did they ever remove kebab! Formerly a province of Europa, Sercia was and is the only part to never be conquered, or defeated. It has a modest military using Yuktobanian equipment, but all the equipment is very modern, and the Sercian Knights have evolved into the nation's elite special forces unit - best in the world.
The northernmost and biggest country entirely on the Sotoan Peninsula, Sotoa is, however, a very sparsely populated country with great infrastructure on its northern coast, and awful infrastructure everywhere else. In the southern jungles, the problems found in Central Sotoa can be found here, with little variation between. Sotoa at least has a less corrupt government and fewer revolutionary groups. Curiously enough, despite being an Islamic republic, it uses a strictly secular law code - it abandoned Sharia Law in 1955 in an attempt to get an ally out of Erusea. It worked.
Your home for the next few years, most likely. South Sotoa is a republic occupying almost the entire southern third of the Sotoan Peninsula, hence its name. Originally founded by Ugellas until they were kicked out by North Point forces in two bloody wars. The government is almost completely controlled by the right wing, and the party in charge since the 1920s - the National Party - has instituted state segregation, known as Apartheid, since the late 1940s. Suffice to say this has kept Sotoa from making many allies, and is part of why it has had to turn to mercenaries for help.
Ugellas is the former owner of what is now South Sotoa, having established it as a colony in the late 18th Cenury. They were once a competitor with North Point for supreme ruler of the seas until a series of disastrous wars with North Point forced them into diplomatic submission - though they were never annexed. Of note is its extremely lax drug laws, even/especially compared to Erusea. Has a very good football team, but has never won the World Cup, despite coming second several times.
Usea is a country that occupies the eastern half of the Usean continent, and is the second most important country on said continent, after Erusea. Despite Usea being almost twice its size. Of note is that Usea and Erusea are quite hostile towards each other, sort of like a miniature version of Osean and Yuktobanian relations. Except both of them are democracies. Though, the Usean government is more restrictive, and its police force larger and more corrupt. Of note is its ban on firearms, though this is in the process of being repealed.
Valga was founded some time in the early 13th Century, and proceeded from then until the middle of the 14th to expand rapidly and violently, eventually controlling all of the Verusan continent, and even poking its nose into the affairs of the Anean citystates. Afterwards, however, it promptly shattered into four pieces, faded into obscurity, and never declared war again. Until now, that is. Perhaps building a nuclear-powered bomber should've tipped everyone off. Or maybe the chemical weapons.
Valverde is yet another South Osean republic, this one being the smallest by population of all. And much like San Martin and Leasath, it doesn't have much corruption to speak of. It does, however, have a number of volcanoes to speak of. Volumes of, as one erupted a short five years ago, managing to bring down an airliner that flew through it by mistake at night.
Vedia has been a colony of two separate nations: Firstly a colony of Indus in the early 9th Century, and secondly as a colony of North Point from the 17th to the 20th Century. It has a small military, which is not helping it much against the much more powerful Valgan Armed Forces, or their captured equipment from Clavis. Nor has their financial sector helped, or all the offshore bank accounts located in Vedia.
Verusa likes to claim it's the oldest country in the world. The thing is, three thousand years of history don't count when you have a socialist revolution in 1927 and start burning your artifacts and history textbooks because 'purge the old, in with the new', then change your mind in 1950 and start proclaiming the glories of old Verusa in the name of socialism. No, it doesn't work that way. Nonetheless, Verusa is a rather powerful nation, with a strong economy and strong military - even if most of its equipment designs are rip-offs of older Yuktobanian wares.
Wellow is much like Cayenne in reverse: Frozen, irrelevant, and eternally neutral. The most interesting thing about it, besides the lack of military, is how it was founded: North Point colonized it in the mid-19th Century as a way of gaining more territory to lord over Sapin in their eternal dick-measuring contest, and also to cap Belka in and prevent the Belkans from getting any colonies of their own. It backfired when Belka invaded Wellow, conquered it from North Point, flooded it with Belkan immigrants, and granted it independence, all within the span of thirty years. There were also rumors in the 1950s that Belka was testing nuclear weapons in Wellow, but these were all disproven.
Besides being often misspelled, Wielvakia actually does have a fair amount of relevance. Namely, its large amounts of iron and coal, found deep within the Wielvakian mountains up against the coast. These mountains are, besides the mineral deposits, inhospitable and rough, and form an excellent barrier against invasion from the sea, something that North Point learned the hard way. Twice.
Yuktobania is like a big, friendly bear. A little too friendly, as it likes to regularly remind nearby states that it is its friend and wants to stay that way, so you should probably listen to it because it has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons on Earth and an army, air force, and navy second only to Osea on each account. It has expressed 'great concern' over the current war involving Valga and Verusa, but has so far done nothing, mainly because at the moment neither country pose a threat to Yutkobania. And realistically speaking, they would have to conquer, subjugate, and pacify the rest of the Verusan continent to do so.
