[PROPOSAL] Repeal the "Gem Trading Accord Act"

Postby Vesintor » Sat Sep 25, 2010 6:55 pm

My proposal to repeal the "Gem Trading Accord Act"

Description: WA General Assembly Resolution #113: The Gem Trading Accord (Category: Free Trade; Strength: Significant) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: ACKNOWLEDGING the resolution’s noble intention to strengthen the fair trade of precious gems;

RECOGNIZING that the resolution fails to differentiate fraudulent gem trading from the legitimate trade of synthetic Gems, simulated or fake Gems;

REGRETTING the devastating impact this resolution will have on the synthetic gem trade which is made illegal by this resolution;

FURTHER RECOGNIZING the legitimacy of the simulated gem industry, and the service it provides to the common people of many WA nations;

UNDERSTANDING that real gems are often very expensive and are mostly only affordable to the upper class population of a nation;

SEEKING an opportunity to establish a better resolution which recognizes the synthetic gem trade as a legitimate industry;

The World Assembly hereby repeals the "Gem Trading Accord" resolution.

You might want to reread the resolution you're trying to repeal there. It does not ban the trading of synthetic gems, it just requires them to be marked as being synthetic.

The authors of this repeal have obviously not even read the resolution they are trying to repeal.

Article g) makes it perfectly clear-

g) The IGL shall assist producers of artificial or synthetic gemstones to differentiate their products from naturally occurring gems to avoid such stones being mistaken for natural gems; trade in synthetic or artificial gems shall remain licit so long as they are not fraudulently sold as natural gems.

The resolution could not be more explicit. Synthetic stones and natural ones must be differentiated and trade in synthetic stones remains perfectly legal. Indeed it has been argued that by removing the taint of fakery from synthetic stones their prices should increase.

Yours,

Although my government was and remains opposed to the Gem Trading Accord, we find this repeal attempt to be flawed. In addition, we are not fans of insta-repeals. My government is of the opinion that resolutions need to be in force for a period of time to allow nations to see the flaws of a resolution before a repeal attempt.
