Legalizing Online Gambling

Postby Underwater Blacksmiths » Sun Jul 18, 2010 9:28 pm

I'm new to NationStates, but I decided to try to write a bill anyway. It would be great if I could get some people's opinions on the bill. Thanks.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY PROPOSAL

Legalizing Online Gambling
A resolution to legalize or outlaw gambling.

Category: Gambling
Legalize/Outlaw: Legalize
Proposed by: Underwater Blacksmiths

Description: RECOGNIZING that policing online gambling is all but impossible
REALIZING that online gamblers are not being deterred by current legislation
RECOGNIZING that it currently costs governments large sums of money to attempt to police the online gaming industry
ACKNOWLEDGING that gambling can be mildly addictive
RECOGNIZING that the easiest way to deal with these addictions is by legalizing the online gaming industry to better track and treat addicts
AFFIRMING that due to the increase in revenue and ease in treating addicts that would result from the legalization of online gambling far outweigh any potential negatives

Approvals: 23 (Underwater Blacksmiths, City of Norfolk, Matoaca, Cooliestan, Discordia Magna, GarriCorp, Simkonis, Aexnidaral, Marflo, Slayers And Witches, Puppetum, The LoUnited Nations, The Grand Millian, African Business, Nation of Quebec, Arcornia, Infiniteland, Viperco2, 3rd may, Greater Rhodes, The Russin Federation, Pelcheria, Phing Phong)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 32 more approvals)

Voting Ends: in 1 day, 23 hours

OK, not meaning to be a noodge here, but the accepted format is:

1.) Put draft up for debate and discussion

THEN

2.) Submit draft proposal for approval.

You skipped step one, which kinda makes this "what do you think?" thread a bit moot, don't you think?

Now, as to our opinion of this;

First, we don't find it to be something the WA really needs concern itself over. Whether or not internet gambling is legalized or not should be left to the individual nations as per their own customs and laws.

Second, we are alarmed that despite your statements about how addictive and dangerous online gambling can be, you still want to make it legal in order to "track the addicts better". To us, that sounds something along the lines of "Lets make mugging legal so we can keep track of the muggers!"

This is not something we could lend our approval to.
Everything you know about me is wrong. Or a rumor. Something like that.

Grays Harbor,
Your argument that legalizing gambling should be left up to the individual nations seems fairly valid. However, I only acknowledged that online gambling was somewhat addictive. Also, since online gambling is completely unpoliceable, it is merely a waste of funds. Thus, a legalization of online gambling would create more revenue while simultaneously creating a system whereby it could be regulated.

The issue we see is that online gambling is not illegal and therefore such legislation is unnecessary.

In the Name of the Eternal Kawaii, may the Cute One be praised

As our nation's chief industry is Gambling, we are opposed to this legislation. Our tribal casinos don't need the added competition.

This child is clearly not gambling online. Wouldn't it be better for him to be in the privacy of his own home where his parents can regulate this activity? Perhaps a good spanking is in order (or is that in violation of some other recently proposed resolution?)

Gambling is one recreational activity we don't mind, provided it is regulated (it is legal already in our country), but if there is a resolution written about legalizing gambling does it mean that it covers all gambling immediately instead of just one part of gambling?

The Executive Assembly of Norstal agreed that such legislation will be too hard to enforced and hereby condemns said legislation for the World Assembly.
