The General Assembly,

Lauding attempts by member states to preserve endangered species and minimise animal cruelty,

Noting that some member states frequently engage in large-scale fishing of sharks and shark finning, for reasons such as but not limited to sale for preparation of traditional dishes such as shark fin soup,

Further noting that most but not all sharks are endangered species, and that shark finning is an inhumane process, after which sharks are returned into the ocean with fins removed so that their suffering is unduly prolonged,

Concerned that previous resolutions such as GA#403 do not have a wide enough scope to prevent unnecessary cruelty to all sharks in particular;

Defining
i) 'shark' as any species under the subdivision Selachimorpha,
ii) the process of 'shark finning' or simply 'finning' as the deliberate severance of the dorsal, pectoral or caudal fins from a shark;

1) Hereby,

a) Requires all member states to further take action against illegal or unregulated fishing of sharks,

b) Mandates that all member nations institute regulations on inhumane shark finning practices, such as but not limited to the negligent or malicious release of live, finned sharks into the ocean without the adoption of sufficient measures to ensure the survival of said shark, which is unable to swim or breathe properly, or the action of finning on a conscious shark,

c) Encourages member states to fund education schemes discouraging the consumption or purchase of shark fins, and encouraging the use of humane shark fin substitutes such as but not limited to vermicelli or gelatin where practicable,

d) Encourages member states to levy tariffs on shark derivatives such as but not limited to shark fins and shark fin soup, with a view to gradually reducing market demand for said shark derivatives;

2) Hereby clarifies that the finning of sharks for
a) legitimate scientific or research purposes
b) humane or medical purposes, carried out by a trained professional, in that the health of the shark would be endangered but for the finning,
is in no way affected by this resolution.

I also wanted to add, I don't think that "definning" is the proper term. I'm pretty sure it's called "shark finning" but I could be wrong. Hope this helps!

As regards the spelling, after a quick Levenshtein distance check it seems that the only revisions made were with respect to grammar (and changing 'definning' to 'defining'), but it turns out the process really is called shark finning in English. Thanks for pointing that out!
