[DEFEATED] Repeal “World Assembly Headquarters”

The General Assembly,

Noting that GA#8 was passed by a slim margin many years ago,

Observing that many important global events have befallen the international community since that time,

Aware that many of the staff working inside the World Assembly Headquarters would be better off working from home in this day and age,

Cognizant of the carbon emissions resulting from the semi-regular travel of thousands of delegations to and from a single international headquarters,

Suggesting that decreasing the degree of travel necessary for WA diplomats to do their jobs may well aid in the fight against climate change,

Asserting that there are many other uses for the land on which the World Assembly Headquarters currently resides that would provide far more social good, such as, but not limited to:
  • Free social housing
  • Affordable social housing
  • Extortionate social housing
  • A shopping centre
  • Many pubs
  • The world’s largest brothel
  • Decorative rubble
Conceding that there may be some alternative uses that might provide a net negative to the international community, such as an office for a law firm,

Ignoring this on the grounds that lawyers will likely be dealt with when the revolution comes,

Hereby Repeals GA#8 “World Assembly Headquarters”.

They call me a moderniser, you see.

EDIT: This proposal has been submitted.

Many pubs
The world’s largest brothel
Decorative rubble

I see you've put some really good land use proposals there.

An improvement on the very clearly out of date and resource-draining WA HQ need not clear a high bar.

On an OOC note: What in the world would the effect of repealing this be?

I'm not certain what Political Stability translates to stat-wise, but a slight drop there. Mild-strength resolution, so not much lost.

Separatist Peoples wrote:"You glorious bastard."

"If one were convinced we were all toxic, corrupt dogs..." [slips a hundred pound note to the gnome opposite] "...this might make some sense."

OOC: Not a chance I actually support this though. This seems like wrecking for the sake of wrecking.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani: "Perhaps you can also include a provision that a ginormous football stadium should be built on the site." He then murmurs to his aid, "totally not funded by our corrupt oil and plastic corruption whatsoever!"

OOC: I'm posting from a puppet nation (I am Outer Sparta), since I thought it would be amusing to see a plastic oil club chime in on international matters.

OOC: Per the compendium, political stability lowers political freedoms, so this would increase the political freedom state, but since it is a mild resolution, not by much and only to the centre.

IC: Turning the HQ into gallows would also be an improved land use. Or a concentration camp. Really, anything would be an improvement. We approve.

I am, of course, more than happy to write a replacement proposal on the usage of digital comms in place of this outdated "talking to other people" nonsense.

Do be warned: the primary backup method of communication in the case of a global internet outage may include carrier pidgeons.

Count Nyle: I commend the delegation from Kavagrad for their desire to tackle a range of important topics, including the environment. Having said that, we fail to see how abolishing the World Assembly's Headquarters makes any meaningful strides in addressing any of the metrics touched on. Perhaps the author can pick one of the topics they try to address through this proposal and flesh it out into its own independent proposal. Alternatively, there are a number of other proposals that are in actual serious need of modernizing. Good luck!

All the better when we inevitably regulate big tech. :P

OOC: Holy shit, a repeal of GAR #8 I don't immediately despise. Well done!

IC: "You mean to say, ambassador, that paying for an elite class of diplomats to swan around drinking and plotting the demise of other people's countries and asserting sovereignty over free peoples, all in a backdrop of extreme opulence and self-aggrandizing splendor, isn't a good use of the world's money?"

"What on earth have they got you doing over there, you poor bastard? Sounds like someone needs a serious office space upgrade, and also perhaps a hug. Not from me, however. That would just make things worse."

We note that our claim to limited Goobergunchian extraterritoriality in our luxurious office suite predates the passage of the targeted resolution and we would not regard it as extinguished by its repeal. Any violation of the same will render the offender subject to sanctions by the Moderately Liberal Unitary Republic of Goobergunchia.

Aware that many of the staff working inside the World Assembly Headquarters would be better off working from home in this day and age,

Cognizant of the carbon emissions resulting from the semi-regular travel of thousands of delegations to and from a single international headquarters,
OOC:
The WA's member nations are not all on one single planet: They are scattered across a wide range of alternative realities and, in some cases, other stellar systems. Having a single location where all of the members' diplomats can meet is therefore much more practical than expecting every member nation to have the technology that would be needed for communicating across realities and interstellar distances... As for travel to & from WAHQ, the WA provides each member nation with a 'portal' that allows direct travel. (This is a longstanding RP convention, going back to NS-UN times, although admittedly it hasn't been referenced much in more recent years...)
