Don't Prosecute Sex Workers
Category: Civil Rights | Strength: Significant
The General Assembly,
Noting that the legality of sex work remains controversial among member nations,
Recognizing however, that criminalizing sex workers harms individuals who are victims of sexual violence,
Cognizant of the fact that penalizing sex workers reduces their trust in national and regional authorities, causing cases of abuse and trafficking to go unreported,
Aware that criminal sanctions attached to sex work disproportionately harm minority groups,
Hereby enacts the following:
- Defines, for the purposes of this resolution:
- “Sex work” as the act of selling one’s own sexual services.
- A “sex worker” as an individual who sells their own sexual services.
- Requires member nations to legalize sex work within their jurisdictions.
- Prevents member nations from deporting any individual based on their status as a sex worker.
- Clarifies that nothing in this resolution prevents member nations from criminalizing the act of purchasing sexual services.
