[Draft] Ban on Bride Burning

Postby Lorrana » Wed Feb 17, 2021 11:40 am

I know, it's kinda short

Current Draft: Draft 1
Image
Ban On Bride Burning
Category: Moral Decency
Strength: Significant

The General Assembly of the World Assembly,

Acknowledging the action of bride burning, where a husband sets on fire and murders his wife after not receiving enough in dowry.

Horrified by the disrespect towards women and expectation of payment shown by people who perform bride burning

Appalled by the way the aforementioned grooms throw around human life.

Defining "bride burning" as the action of a husband setting on fire and mudering his wife after not receiving enough in dowry, as stated above.

Defining "dowry" as payment given by a bride's family to a groom after a marriage is formed.

Requires member states to make bride burning illegal.

Requires member states to punish people who perform bride burning with at least the severity of the way that they punish people accused of murder

Please define "this."

I replaced "this" with "bride burning", if that's what you're suggesting

You say the same thing over and over again. Also, you don't give any evidence of why this is bad.

Requires member states to make bride burning illegal, if not already illegal.

What is the point of this if it is already illegal in some places?

This is a start to something, but right now, needs a lot of work.

Silly me, I know, but I always thought burning somebody alive was murder.

What is the point of this exercise? Why does a single specific type of murder need it’s own legislation? Murder is fecking murder.
Everything you know about me is wrong. Or a rumor. Something like that.

"While I agree with my colleagues that this is not necessary, I disagree with their analysis that bride burning is necessarily murder and is therefore necessarily illegal. Murder is an unlawful killing. Where the law makes such killing legal, it is not murder. Ergo, where bride burning is legal, it is not murder, however shocking the practice is. Any argument predicated on murder already being illegal is a poor argument."

"Wouldn't a nation be in violation of CoCR if they did allow bride burnings, since by the definition used here, there is a clear legal discrimination."

Seeing as the proposal acknowledges this as already illegal, I see absolutely no value in legislating on the matter.
While she had no regrets about throwing the lever to douse her husband's mistress in molten gold, Blanche did feel a pang of conscience for the innocent bystanders whose proximity had caused them to suffer gilt by association.

OOC: The keyword is in the definition. If it's murder, it's by definition already not a legal action.
