Best resolution of 2020 (A Q2 Annual Review)

PostPosted: Mon Jun 29, 2020 5:42 pm

I cancelled this tally to wait for the end of the year and synchronise on the calendar. (2020-11-03)

The GA is for resolution lovers!

It's that time of year where we try to find out what the best resolution of the last year was. Certainly, though, as this hasn't been run since... 2015? No, that can't be right... Oh really? Wow. 2015, this might be a bit different from the olden days.

I will probably look towards doing another run in early 2021 to get us synced back up with the years.

Below you can find two things: (1) a list of all the resolutions in the last year and (2) links to the other threads that I have – or am going to – create that divide our 28 resolutions into four groups of seven. In each thread, vote only for two resolutions. Then we will have a final round in which we will similarly do limited-approval voting for the eight winners. If there is interest in a wild card round, shout below.

After this we will run a poll in a to-be-established region for the final round of 8 (maybe +1) resolutions, with restrictions for WA membership, which will crown the winner!

Voting

You can find the groups at the links below. They will be open only for seven days from present. At the end, the semi-finalists will be tallied and a site-side poll held.

Nb accidental omission of GA 494—a ±1 error in parsing GA resolutions from the API—means that Group 4's poll was reset to add it.

Uh, whoops. I guess I forgot to tell you: being the maintainer of the resolutions list sort of makes you de facto in charge of these polls. Mik foisted the job on me once upon a time, so by rights I should have been able to foist the job on you. But like I said, I forgot. Sorry about that.

Just a note for everyone; voting on these groups ends shortly (later today)!

Also, please respond if you are interested in a wild card round.

Looks like the voting has now ended.

I am generally supportive of a wild card round.

The Group 4 poll was brigaded, by UM, per admissions on Discord. While I announced earlier that I would be tallying votes, I want to hear first, however, thoughts on (1) whether Group 4's poll ought to be redone and (2) what strategies might be taken to ensure that any redone poll is less vulnerable to brigading of this sort.

Deffo redo. Do you have anyone TG-blocked? Could restrict to WA nations via TG?

Maybe we can have threads where people put forum posts detailing their two preferences? Won't be anonymous though.

Wouldn't stop spamming vote with undeclared puppets.

Well IA could easily remove all the puppet voting and say only WA members can vote (or must declare and confirm their WA et cetera)

Thread votes can't be closed and if they didn't believe "one vote per person", they're not going to listen to "WA nations only". That is why I said WA nations only and via TG. Asking IA to check founding dates of every voter (to weed out newly created puppets) is a bit too much, but people most likely wouldn't risk ejection from WA for a year by WA-multiing.

Thoughts on creating two regions in which people can vote (for one resolution) by NS poll? It would get around the puppeteering problem.

We didn't reach a consensus on this topic. Would love to hear thoughts.

I agree with the regional poll solution.

Two polls have been created in two different regions. Do not vote for the same resolution twice. If you do, I won't count that vote in the final tally. You must be a WA member to vote.

Poll 1: https://www.nationstates.net/page=poll/p=161087
Poll 2: https://www.nationstates.net/page=poll/p=161086

Both polls will run for one week from now. I will amend the OP to redirect to those two polls.

Repeal "Ensuring Safe Syringe Use": 0 + 0
Ethical Treatment of Animals in Research: 2 + 1
Military Identification Tag Act: 0 + 0
Rights of the employed: 1 + 1
Proper Hygiene For Medical Instruments: 1 + 3
Language and Education Rights for Deaf Individuals: 5 + 2
Regulating Desalination: 1 + 2
Supporting and Valuing the Humanities: 0 + 1

Which yields final tallies of:

Repeal "Ensuring Safe Syringe Use": 0
Ethical Treatment of Animals in Research: 3
Military Identification Tag Act: 0
Rights of the employed: 2
Proper Hygiene For Medical Instruments: 4
Language and Education Rights for Deaf Individuals: 7
Regulating Desalination: 3
Supporting and Valuing the Humanities: 1

From the various groups, the following move forward to the next round:

Affordable Transgender Hormone Therapy
Ban on Sterilisation of Minors etc
Financial and Economic Education
Wartime Healthcare Protections
Data Protection Accord
Prevention Of Forced Sterilisation
Proper Hygiene For Medical Instruments
Language and Education Rights for Deaf Individuals

A tie was broken in group 2. Is there any interest in a wild card round? If not, I will create a poll tomorrow with four selection options to winnow down for a final poll to be conducted site-side.

A wild card round would be great – do we just use this thread for suggestions? If so, I'll nominate GA#469 Reducing Food Waste.

I'm also in support of a wildcard round, for what it's worth.

For what it’s worth, I’m also in favour of a wildcard round. It would introduce a bit more variety into the contestants.
