Nuclear Weapons Act

Postby Andromeda Islands » Fri Dec 21, 2018 6:57 am

Our nation has returned to Nationstates and the World Assembly after a long absence.
We are very strongly opposed to the possession of nuclear weapons by any nations and therefore think that it would be prudent to repeal this terrible resolution. We consider this resolution to be an insult to peace loving peoples.

Where is your repeal?
While she had no regrets about throwing the lever to douse her husband's mistress in molten gold, Blanche did feel a pang of conscience for the innocent bystanders whose proximity had caused them to suffer gilt by association.

(OOC: When you have an idea, the immediate step should be to post a draft on the forum so that other people can comment on it and suggest imporvmeets. That said, the Nuclear Arms Possession Act is pretty much indestructible, as it is a piece of legislation that has been around a long time and is well-liked. Because most WA members like nukes, I think the law you want to repeal is here to stay.)
Hello! I’m a GAer and NS Roleplayer from the United Kingdom.
My pronouns are he/him.
Any posts that I make as GenSec will be clearly marked as such and OOC. Conversely, my IC ambassador in the General Assembly is Ambassador Fortier. I’m always happy to discuss ideas about proposals, particularly if grammar or wording are in issue. I am also Executive Deputy Minister for the WA Ministry of TNP.

It has a very broad diplomatic presence despite being economically developing, mainly to seek help in recovering from the effect of a recent civil war. Read the factbook here for more information; perhaps, I will eventually finish it.

To ensure the freedom and sovereignty of peace loving nations, nuclear arms must be allowed.

Thank You for the feedback. We hope to have a proposal within the next month, hopefully within a week or two. It is critical that we come to a consensus on this within our nation first, but wanted to present this now to see if there is enough support for this lest we waste too much time on something that could be hopeless. Nuclear weapons cost too much in money and certainly in lives, of course. The danger of nuclear war is an existential threat to us all. That is certain.

OOC: It's hopeless. Don't waste your time. Aside from that, it's impossible to say if one would support a proposal that hasn't been written yet.

I wouldn't be quite as grim, but for someone's first attempt at a GA resolution, I would highly disencourage trying to repeal NAPA. That sort of thing requires far more experience, skill, interregional connections, and dumb luck than you are likely to have at the moment.

You have very real concerns, but allow me to convey to you a few points to consider. Now, don't take this as "Don't do it" but think about this as just the tip of the iceberg of the opposition that you will encounter.

The cost to produce nuclear weapons can vary from nation to nation. For your nation it might be very expensive, but the Federation has reached the point where a nuclear warhead is a little more expensive than that of a conventional warhead. The difference in price is negligible to the point where the discussion is not "We can either do X or Y" but "We can do (insert number) of X and still maintain to (insert number) of Y".

The dangers of nuclear war certainly is a threat, but do keep in mind that your proposed idea would only cover member nations. Non-member nations are not subject to WA resolutions and therefore will not abide by your proposal at all. To put it bluntly, the possession of nuclear arms by member states is a deterrent against non-members states who would potentially wish to do us harm.

I am fairly certain that others can provide quite a few more reasons against a repeal.

(OOC: I am going to abandon this idea for the time being, but I will explore other ideas for promoting pacifism and a more peaceful world, in the future, because of what is happening in "the real world". This forum may not be the most appropriate place to do so however, and I may explore other venues, for these kinds of discussions... in the "real world" such topics, in my view, have taken a back seat to so many other issues.
Thanks to for the suggestions, etc. )
