[SUBMITTED] Repeal "Freedom of Religion"

Repeal "Freedom of Religion"
Category: Repeal

This august World Assembly,

Reminding itself that (i) legislation passed by the World Assembly cannot be amended or changed, only repealed, and that any correction of the problems noted in the target resolution would first require passing a repeal, and (ii) there are no real good reasons to keep redundant legislation around,

Concerned that the resolution creates a burden in law preventing member nations from enacting, without the need for burdensome justification, policies giving equal treatment, irrespective of religion,

Resolving that member nations should be able to enact policies that are non-discriminatory without having to justify themselves to the World Assembly or re-litigate the matter in national courts, and

Believing that current anti-discrimination legislation embodied in GA 35 “The Charter of Civil Rights” is perfectly capable of stopping actual discrimination against religious practices and beliefs, hereby:

Repeals GA 430 “Freedom of Religion”.

Against.
While she had no regrets about throwing the lever to douse her husband's mistress in molten gold, Blanche did feel a pang of conscience for the innocent bystanders whose proximity had caused them to suffer gilt by association.

"Having reviewed the resolution targeted for repeal, it is unclear to us how GA #430 in any way prevents member nations from enacting policies giving equal treatment, and we are skeptical that this repeal would do anything to advance the cause of religious freedom. As such, we are staunchly opposed to this repeal."

Ridiculously weak arguments.

Concerned that the resolution creates a burden in law preventing member nations from enacting, without the need for burdensome justification, policies giving equal treatment, irrespective of religion,

Such as what, exactly? I presume that this includes things like serving gay couples. First off, refusing to serve gay couples is not a religious practice. Secondly, ensuring equal treatment under the law is certainly a compelling practcal interest in the name of good order, namely in enforcing WA law. Insofar as this resolution passed, it doesn't contradict the Charter on Civil Rights which explicitly states the following:

All inhabitants of member states have the right not to be and indeed must not be discriminated against on grounds including sex, race, ethnicity, nationality, skin color, language, economic or cultural background, physical or mental disability or condition, religion or belief system, sexual orientation or sexual identity, or any other arbitrarily assigned and reductive categorisation which may be used for the purposes of discrimination, except for compelling practical purposes, such as hiring only female staff to work with battered women who have sought refuge from their abusers.

This argument is dishonest to its core. As is the following argument.

Resolving that member nations should be able to enact policies that are non-discriminatory without having to justify themselves to the World Assembly or re-litigate the matter in national courts, and

Again, this is simply untrue.

Believing that current anti-discrimination legislation embodied in GA 35 “The Charter of Civil Rights” is perfectly capable of stopping actual discrimination against religious practices and beliefs, hereby:

Does it protect religious practice? If so, where.

Repeals GA 430 “Freedom of Religion”.

This clause, at least, is honest. It does what it says--repeals the right to religious freedom.

We are vehemently opposed to this repeal.
