OOC: However, Americans stereotypically disdain all lawyers except their own. Employing more lawyers sounds like an awful idea, whereas employing more barristers sounds like a rather noble and socially elevated thing to do.

Barbera: We have produced a second draft of this proposal.

Fairburn: It seems as if we may need this as a resolution in the near future. Does anyone have any additional comments to make?

"We're good. I double-checked, and my company still holds the patent on international trade. We also participate in the international patent system."

"Wait, what?"

"It's true, Brenjos. Patent #46758549374528292a3."

Harold: (cartwheels into the chamber) Don't delay! Give us the patent to custard pies today!

Fairburn: I have seen some absolutely monstrous debate on the subject of international patents, so I've decided to patent the concept of debate. It disincentivizes bad arguments and provides us with a revenue source!

Seriously, guys, the first couple of preambulatory clauses were supposed to be a joke. You didn't have to make them come true while I was away.

OOC: To be fair, American law is categorically harder to work in, and so the education is more rigorous, the job harder, and the street cred all around better, than most of the world's legal systems. English common law is a harder beast than civil code, adversarial systems require a plethora of skills that non-adversarial systems would otherwise divest in the judge (I'm looking at you, Spain!), and if nothing else, U.S. liability is a more litigious concept. The Barrister/Solicitor specialization split in most formerly British nations also disincentivizes the broad skill base of client skills and advocacy/litigation skills together, as they divide the two. American lawyers, at least on paper, just plain got more to work with.

OOC: So, assuming Auralia's chest-thumping patent resolution will pass and isn't repealed before this one's submitted, wouldn't this one be pretty useless with duplication/contradiction issues?

Fairburn: Patenting algebra, you say? Great idea! I'll get on it right away! (exits)

OOC: I really don't see why this should be OOC, but OK. Anyway, I'm not sure where the duplication or contradiction lies, but let's be honest; Wallenburg is going to submit a repeal within the hour. This proposal is basically the byproduct of my frustration at all this tit-for-tat legislation.

Anyway, I'm not sure where the duplication or contradiction lies

Well it really depends on what resolution's going to be in the not-repealed state when you're going to submit it, but chances are high that your only proper active clauses, 1-3, will be doing one or the other.

This proposal is basically the byproduct of my frustration at all this tit-for-tat legislation.

I wish you'd instead waste your time in writing a good blocker. :P

My plan is to wait for a time when neither resolution is active, then I shall make my move (as soon as I can figure out how to campaign, that is).

Nonsense! This is a most efficient blocker! Don't even tell me that Wallenburg or Auralia can pass a resolution to get around this one. It's completely foolproof.

Sure we can. It's called a repeal.

OOC: My comment was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else, but I could always claim that your intention is to deprive hard-working barristers of their jobs, so you'd have to find some way to get around that. :P

Fairburn: Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a most humble proposal to protect our poor barristers from unemployment! As Harold has demonstrated, we have been forced to resort to hiring clowns as there are no civil causes left to litigate! Please end this inhumane situation!

Neville: Also, end these nonsensical discussions about international patent laws.
