Jennifer's ears perk up and she leans in slightly. Her eyes go up and down McCooley meticulously as if trying to estimate his best selling price.
At around this time, he receives his ginger ale, which he promptly takes a sip of. He's somehow still feeling the buzz and feels emboldened. "What is it about her that turns people away? That vigor you mentioned?"
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. She's a wonderful woman, really. It's just...well...she's a very active person, and loves a challenge. That has its good and bad consequences. A lot of folks in the office are more the cooperative type than the adventurous one. She has also never really lived down the allegations that she murdered that other ambassador."
There is a brief moment before she realizes what exactly she said. "Oh
fuck, I shouldn't have said that. The-they're not true, you see, so you have nothing to worry about. Not that you in particular need to worry. Nobody needs to worry. She hardly even--no, fuck, I shouldn't say that either. Um, fuck, I'm really sorry."
Beads of sweat, already formed on her face, crawl slowly down to her jaw. She turns her face away from Slick and takes the opportunity to slowly drink her entire glass of water.
