[DRAFT] Medical Cloning

Postby Mahaj WA Seat » Wed Apr 27, 2011 1:40 pm

Social Justice, Mild

The World Assembly,

RECOGNIZING that many patients may be grievously ill,

AWARE that in some cases, cloning may help save the lives of some of these patients,

NOTING that patients may receive stem cell treatment,

REALIZING that in some cases there may be little to no healthy stem cells,

COGNIZANT of a process called 'medical cloning' where cells taken from a sick being can be turned back into cells with a stem-cell like state and be encouraged to grow into cells to replace the damaged body part of the body,

DECLARES medical cloning to be a medical procedure and grants all rights attached to such a title granted to all involved,

REQUIRES nations that allow stem cells to allow medical cloning as well.

Thoughts?

"Are the Human nations just now learning cloning? Pathetic." Taliz Narzhan said.

"Monikians have been practicing this for millenniums. We tentatively support, we oppose the human language as there are more than just human nations in the WA it should be changed to Sapient Being or something similar. Though we question the category." Faliksa said.

Abstain for now. I need to think this over.

However, this in no way qualifies as a "human rights" resolution.

I have removed the one reference to humans and changed it to 'Being'.

Opposed. This is far too similar to "Stem Cells for Greater Health" which has a great number of problems with focusing too closely on one specific kind of technology that, while "cutting edge" (and potentially theoretical for some RL nations) today, is actually archaic and a waste of time and money for FT NS nations.

These sorts of details are much better left up to individual nations to sort out.

But the problem still exists, that nations could allow stem cells but deny this way to create stem cells. It undermines SCfGH.

This isn't a way to CREATE stem cells. It involves cloning - as you state yourself - to create a "stem cell-like state" which is not the same thing as stem cells. Also: I believe the existence (and allowance) of stem cells in all member nations is MANDATED by SCfGH.

Further, I'm allllll about undermining the travesty that is SCfGH at any and every turn. If I have my way, it won't be on the books any longer, and we'll have a better (more comprehensive, less detailed) replacement on the books.

It is not mandated by SCfGH to use stem cells.

Furthermore, do you honestly not believe that this resolution would not increase the quality of life for some people? Why do you deny these people the chance for a better life?

Oh, god. A "save the puppies!" argument? I'm not persuaded by lazy arguments of that sort.

Mandating that nations allow their citizens to breathe would improve the quality of life. Mandating that nations give each person $100 per day would give everyone the chance for a better life.

Do you honestly believe that nations are unable to make these sort of decisions with regards to the best interests of their citizens without WA interference? Do you honestly believe that mandating this sort of technology is for the best for all individuals, even in societies who have much more advanced technology and, perhaps, are able to pick organs from, say, a Lung Tree that produces lungs for transplantation without any biological markers that can cause various medical issues when transplanted.

Further, a correction on your reference to SCfGH (source) - while nations are not "required" to use stem cells, they are required to allow the USE of stem cells by doctors within their borders. [1) GUARANTEES the right of Doctors to engage in Stem Cell research should they so choose.] Of course, among the many problems with this resolution is that it refers to doctors using stem cell "research" versus stem cell THERAPIES, but given subsequent clauses, I'm presuming that Studly Penguins equated the language between the two since he seems to have used them interchangeably.

I'm still opposed and, further, I'm now very disappointed that you would fall back on the "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" scare debate topic. I would rather debate this proposal on it's merits (or lack thereof, in my mind) rather than falling back on such logical fallacies.
