OOC: Gruenberg, when did I mention Carüubas as a bowler. I only have 5 bowlers.

Thanks for the answer.
And just what was up with Gruenberg's round? That's just epic. It makes me happy now knowing I don't have them on my schedule.

Cricket team get off to horrific start.

The EL team suffered a horrible setback in trying to get an unlikely place in the World Championships after the whole were bowled out after just 39.5 overs, having only put up a score of 145 runs. The highest score came from captain Harry Romaj, who was run out trying to get his fiftieth run.

Daniels c. Appleby b. Mauntell 20
Spring run out 11
Williams b. W. Stretton 9
Rintedus b. Mauntell 12

Tinky Winky b. Mauntell 20
Dipsy b. Quercus Sergius 5
Laa-Laa c. Mauntell b. Quercus Sergius 7

It was a pretty spirited display from a team consisting of just only 4 grown-up human adults, but Mauntell was on top form taking a 5-wicket haul plus a catch. Ah well, we've still got another innings. And by the way, Genyria are 102/4 after 34 overs, so if we can pounce quickly, we could still stand a chance in this first test.

"Welcome to Monastic Test Match Special. I'm Fr. John the Golden-Throated, and joining me here at the Saint Alban the Protomartyr of All Britain ground at Nova Verulamium is Fr. Ivan the Beefy. Fr. Ivan..."

"It's a glorious spring day here at Nova Verulamium, Fr. John, and I'm sure that we're in for a magnificent day's cricket. The crowd has exceeded all expectations for this first ever test in the Archregimancy, with no fewer than 14 monks turning up...."

-------------------------

"..this opening over, as it looks like the monks will be alternating Fr. Edward and Fr. Fursey. A sensible decision?"

"I'd say so, Fr. John. A left-handed and right-handed fast bowler alternating will keep Akbar and Rahmaz on their toes..."

"First ball goes for two; well played by Akbar."

"... and you don't want to give the visitors time to settle..."

"BIG APPEAL!!! AND HE'S OUT!!! GOD BE PRAISED!!!! Akbar is out LBW second ball for two! A disaster for the Tiger Eaters!"

"... which of course reminds me of a story I once heard about the Venerable Martyrius of Zelenets..."

-------------------------------------------------

"...second over, and while it's early days, Rahmaz has looked in good form."

"Five runs so far this over, and Fr. Fursey will want to bring down the run rate."

"The last ball of the over. An even greater hush than the usual Archregimancy hush falls over the ground, AND HE'S OUT!!!! Straightforward catch by Fr. David, and with two down for less than 10 runs, Akbarabad are in all kinds of trouble!"

"It puts me to mind of the life of the Martyr Eudokia of Heliopolis..."

-------------------------------------------------

"Rabb and Hassan have really settled the visitors. An excellent century stand as the captain and number four steady the rickety ship."

"The crowd applaud with good reason; heathens though the visitors may be, good cricket is always appreciated."

"Fr. Edmund.... A FANTASTIC CATCH BY FR. ALBAN!!!! OH MY!"

"Why, it's just like that incident involving the Martyr Antonina of Nicea! Back in the Great Persecution..."

<moments later>

"Fr. Edmund comes forward again, and HE'S GOTTIM! GOLDEN DUCK! FR. EDMUND IS ON A HATTRICK!"

"Gold being a particularly popular colour here in the Archregimancy, though I'm unaware of any icon portraying a duck; except that..."

"Here's the hattrick ball... OUT!!!! Adil is out too! The first ever hattrick in Archregimancy test cricket history, and Akbarabad are reeling."

------------------------------------------------------------

"...a real captain's innings from Rabb here, as he gets the first ever test century scored in the Archregimancy."

"And well might the home fans applaud for the second time this match; this is magnificent batting. Ohhhhhh, and it's a six to seal the century. Wonderful. Even for a heathen.

"But there seems to be some sort of mix-up in the middle... Azam is calling for a suicidal single, and.... OUT! Rabb is run out for 106! A disastrous fiasco!"

"Poor, Fr. John; poor."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"And just two balls later, Azam joins his captain back in the pavilion, leaving just the Akbarabad tail."

"It's a bit like that incident involving the Virginmartyr Domnina of Syria, what with her straw-covered hut, and diet of lentils...."

----------------------------------

"And with Fr. Edmund bowling Rahman, that's Akbarbad all out for 241 - and the fifth wicket for today's star. Fr. Ivan?"

"It's certainly a good first day's play for the Black Robes, with that hattrick for Fr. Edmund laying waste to the visitor's middle order as surely as the Lord laid waste to Sodom and Gommorah - and laying the groundwork for a deserved 5 wicket haul. So long as the monks don't lose any wickets in the small number of overs remaining before the close of the day's play, I'd say the Archregimancy are in the driving seat here after the first day's play....

The Northern Rabbler
No colour, this is Cricket.

Century, But Confusion
Nation begins Test season.

Jamey Jones, Colmark

Toman Lielmin, coming off a championship season with South Hobart, scored a century in North Chicanan's debut as a Test-player. However, with poor wicket-play by other Super Kings, North Chicanan ceeded the first inning with only 291 after 79.3 overs.

The results were expected for a young squad who just finished their Pro20 Season, with most players coming from South or North Hobart (which has come under fire by other teams in the federation) that finished just a month ago from another epic Grand Final. What wasn't expected was the continued poor form, as Day 1 came to a close with 41 after one wicket to host Colmark, setting up a very dangerous second day for the National Elevens.

Lielmin did dazzle with his play, scoring 112 in his debut as well as successfully bowling out Colmark's Tavish with only 11. However, he's received little help in dealing with Weston and Mitchell before the day was called. Elevens coach Kasey James was seen with David Strangefellow after the match, very critical of the young player's poor performance. James does have a few problems, as he was left with only R'jin left at the end of the inning, with five of his eleven players bowling out with single-digit results. The problems more than likely won't work itself out on this Test, but the NC Cricket Club, overseers of both Pro20 and the national Test side, seem content to deal with growing pains as the players adjust to the longer form of play.

The team will seek to escape the first inning with as little damage as possible to their hosts tomorrow in High Leys Park. For a day, at least, we can joke that we are leading 291-41 but we should keep the celebration to an extreme minimum.

From Spitfyred1: Coffee Cakes 288/5 (88 overs); Spitfyred1
The Fyreballz played decently for their first test match. Although they had held Coffee Cakes to a reasonably low run rate on the first day, a glaring weakness was revealed. The Fyreballz had very few wickets. One of the bowlers was interviewed.
We went hard and attacked relentlessly. Sadly, we only managed five wickets. We cannot win if we do not knock down the bailes. Tommorow we will need to attack hard and get the wickets we need. Only then will the team have a chance to win.

When the team is up to bat they will face a tough test. They will attack every ball and hope for sixes. If the defense can improve, the offense may win.

Coffee Cakes Sports Network interview with... team manager Mike Grissom.

CCSN: So, what was your assessment of the team's play today?
MG: Well, our lads did their best, 288 whil not being great is still a fine round by most standards.

CCSN: And our boys start off tomorrow still batting. What effect will that have on the team?
MG: Well, it's definitely a tremendous confidence booster, at the least. What they accomplished today is something to be proud of. Hopefully we can keep this up for the length of the competition.

CCSN: It didn't seem like there were too many sixes today from the righties on the team, is this something to get tweaked maybe later on?
MG: Well, considering they didn't hurt the team in getting sent down early, I'd say it was a success. I don't know about changing any players yet, remember our top 2 righty batters are also our best fielders, so I'm not concerned yet.

CCSN: So, you're satisfied with the fours?
MG: Absolutely. A few more sixes would have been great, but with the fine results today, we'll take it.

GBC reports on Genyria v. Eastfield Lodge, day one

Genyria v. Eastfield Lodge

Fourteen wickets fall as Genyria make a good start against Eastfield Lodge

Conditions at Cambridge University favoured the bowlers today as Eastfield Lodge were bowled out for just 145 within 40 overs, putting Genyria in a fairly good position at the end of the first day: 102-4 from the 34 overs played after lunch.

Some remarkable bowling from young Crispin Mauntell saw him take five wickets and a catch. There were good spells from Manius Sergius Quercus, too, who took two wickets. When put in to bat, Genyria's top enders disappointed somewhat. None broke 25, except Gerard Avril who remained in at stumps on the cusp of his half-century.

Captain Tarquin Kettering remarked, "I'm really pleased with our bowling this morning, especially what we saw from Crispin. The batting, though, has not really been up to scratch, even considering conditions on the wicket. What a shame for Aiméry and Graeme to fall so quickly."

AVIDIA, Krytenia (BPA) -- It was neither a good day nor a bad day for The Babbage Islands as they commenced their maiden voyage in the world of Test cricket. The national XI scored a reasonable 326 all out, and fast bowler Nathaniel Adams then treated the host crowd to a first-ball surprise duck retiring Krytenian batsman Stewart Saunders.

The three-four partnership of David Bennett and George Ward batted for 120, with Bennett finishing at 60 and Ward just missing a debut Test century at 96. Allen Palmer was held runless.

The hosts will open day two 11/1 in their first innings.

Bumblebees summary: C Harvey 43; S Butler 46; D Bennett 60; G Ward 96; A Wood 17; E Griffiths 35; A Palmer 0; H Anderson 5; T Morgan 11; N Adams 7; C Williams 6*.

The Evening Courier

Captain satisfied with opening days play

Test cricket has been a long time in coming for Sorthern Northland and for captain Ronan Carroll the occasion of Sorthern Northland's first ever test, on home soil and against Swartaz, has been something to savour. Having won the toss on an overcast Downmarsh morning Carroll elected to test his batters out early on.

“Some people might have chosen to field instead” admitted Carroll, “But I know we like to see good batting performances in this country, so I wanted to give those that watched the chance to enjoy some batting early into our test life.”

Some impressive early batting was exactly the reward those gathered around the Downmarsh Cricket Club were given. Various vantage points were chosen, some chose to set up seat around the boundary, a lively contingent from Swartaz gathered to one side of the pavilion and their was also a sizeable crowd watching on from The Golden Duck's beer garden. From whichever vantage point the match was watched it can be agreed that Sorthern Northland's opening partnership of Abbey Reid and the captain's brother John Carroll built up a decent partnership.

Reid looked to get Sorthern Northland off on the front foot, smashing Alex Gösta's opening delivery straight back past the bowler for four runs. A further one hundred and twenty two runs would be added before the first wicket finally fell, an edged shot from Reid being taken calmly into the gloves of Swartaz captain and wicketkeeper Mikael Sanderjorn. Reid had though managed sixty-nine runs before making her way back to the pavilion. Already on fifty-seven runs, John Carroll would go on to add a further fifty-three to take his score up to one hundred and ten before finally going. His wicket falling, perhaps ironically, when a lack of communication with his brother resulted in a run-out.

A further three wickets would fall before the close of the play, with only one batsman looking likely to emulate the opening pairing. Clearly nervous on his test début, number three Dei Rhys-Jones fell for just sixteen runs after being caught by Andrei Björn. John Carroll's run out was shortly followed by Ronan Carroll being clean bowled by Daniel Anjersson having scored twenty-three runs. With wickets falling at a steady rate Dáithí Ó hAodhagáin steadied the ship, managing to rack up forty-three not out by the end of the day. The day could have ended better for Sorthern Northland though, as Jessie Hughes fell, having scored just five runs on the final ball of the day.

Captain Carroll though however remained satisfied with his team's opening day rewards saying, “It is good to still be in of course, and we have enough wickets left that we should be able to last for a while on the second day.”

“We're very excited to be finally playing test cricket and maybe that was the cause of some the nerves. We're in a position we are happy to be though, and going into a match we all thought it would be nice be all involved to get a draw. We're still on target for that and we can assure everyone that we will go all out for that, so we'll be staying in as long as we can. It's very exciting.”

Carroll then went on to promise “a very exciting second day of play” at the risk of the largest overuse of the word exciting in Sorthern history.

David Wade will partner Ó hAodhagáin at the opening of the second day.

Colmark succumbed to a fine display of bowling from North Chicanan, as overcast conditions on the second day of the test saw bowlers from both sides swinging the ball both ways. The day started ominously for Colmark as Mitchell was bowled by the superb Lielman with the first ball of the day, and both Lincoln and Turner followed him back to the pavillion soon after. Resistance was put up by Weston and Lyle, but one Weston was caught plumb in front on 77, it was clear that no one else was going to have a good day with the bat as the tail was cleaned up very cheaply, leaving Lyle not out on 43. Hope was restored, however, by the Colmarkian bowling performance, as Williams ripped through the visitors top order, taking all six wickets before the close of play. With overcast conditions forecasted again tomorrow, this looks set to be a low scoring contest.

Williams 20-9-21-6
Thomas 11-0-54-0
Lincoln 7-0-44-0
Wilkins 3-0-30-0
Turner 6-1-15-0
There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

Match report posted on the GruenCric website.
Valuable tail end runs set up huge lead

Gruenberg lead by 373 runs heading into what looks set to be an intriguing Day 3 at The Oval. Honours were roughly split on Day 2 as each session saw runs amassed and key wickets fall, and at 192-4, Loonaterian's innings hangs in the balance, with Carlos Vindana well set on a valuable 61 and Rüli Carüubas's 25 having provided some attacking impetus in a slow-scoring third session; on a wicket still looking extremely favourable for batting, it could be the platform for a long day in the field for Gruenberg's attack, but Loonaterian will want more runs for the fifth wicket staring such a goat-enabled total in the face.

Benny Enchante's delightful innings petered out in slightly disappointing fashion as he failed to get going at all at the restart, first running out batting partner Pistal Nejjimhio on a disastrous call, and adding only 8 runs from 25 deliveries as he brought up his 250 in laboured style. The applause for the landmark, and his subsequent departure after a lazy clip to leg gully, was still rapturous, but his performance this morning was a shadow of yesterday's effort. Fortunately for Gruenberg, there was batting yet to come despite being into the tail, and Dervin Yeg added 71 for the final two wickets with o'Po'o'To'o'So Bant and Akkoikki Mhron as he forced the tired looking Loonaterian fielders to stay out until the lunch interval, when Vindana - who finished with 4 wickets - trapped Mhron in front.

Yeg finished on an unbeaten 37 as, save for the unfortunately run out Nejjimhio, all of Gruenberg's worrying long tail made it to double figures. Mikey Hughes and Vindana were the pick of the Loonaterian bowlers, but Gruenberg had set a total of 565, putting the focus squarely onto Loonaterian's batsmen to come up with a response. Domestic averages can be misleading, but there was every indication that Loonaterian could boast a very strong batting lineup all the way down to 11, and as Yeg walked off, he must have known he would be taking the new ball under less than favourable conditions.

Under bright, clear skies the innings began - nary a cloud appeared all day - and the pitch stayed true, although seemed a little less dead than the previous day as a few shorter pitched deliveries began to take off. James Dean and Patrick Greuter got the inning started in gung-ho fashion, dashing to 40 off the first 8 overs and including a towering six lofted into the Ministry end by Greuter. But smart captaincy from Zambuimmi Hengtridan saw Yeepers Naroadnig take the first change ahead of Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon or the specialist spinners, and he immediately got the breakthrough, jamming up Greuter, who was smartly taken off an edge behind by Spintmhitz Turvuaednes.

With the spinners on the run rate began to drop, and more wickets fell as Hengtridan at mid off snaffled a leading edge from a ball invitingly tossed up by Nejjimhio to Dean; and then skipper Rikki Mäteschitz, who looked hapless against the wrist spinner, managed to get to Naroadnig's less threatening end, only to play across the line attempting a sweep and be judged leg before. At 64-3 trouble beckoned but if any Gruenbergers were getting overexcited, they should have remembered their own innings. Two batsmen steadied the ship-full-of-goats*, and eked out a steady 81 run partnership for the fourth wicket.

All-rounders Karl Laud and Carlos Vindana both reached patient fifties, hitting some boundaries but failing to work singles in the manner Enchante and Ukklukk Pruon had yesterday. Telliflikkiflarknon proved slightly disappointing, not aided by the track, and he proved expensive, but the spinners toiled away for 29 overs, keeping up an over rate than once again allowed some extra play at the end of the day. Finally, Nejjimhio struck just when a big stand threatened, Pruon holding a sharp chance at slip as Laud correctly read the smurg ball but overdid his lunge forward to defend it. Carüubas cracked a couple of fours and Vindana finished on 61.

Captain Hentridan acknowledged that the next session was likely to be the most important in the match. "They have a lot of batting still to come, but right now we need to concentrate on preventing this stand from developing," he said after the day's play. "I felt we bowled well in the final session, and that a wicket was coming, so we need to maintain that momentum tomorrow." With no predictions for cloud, it is likely to fall to the spinners to do much of the work as they look to press towards, ideally, enforcing the follow-on.

While most Gruenbergers will be squarely locked onto the home Test, there is much cricket going on elsewhere in the world. The first result of the GCF season beckons as Genyria reduced Eastfield Lodge to 29-6 in their second innings, leaving the visitors needing 158 just to avoid an innings defeat, while Gruenberg's total has already been eclipsed as the largest Test score thanks to Coffee Cakes, who added 338 on the second day to move to 626-9 at Spitfyred1. The standout event thus far has been the kamilaukion-trick recorded by Fr. Edmund of The Archregimancy, who dismissed Akbarabad for a modest 241 despite a century from captain Imran Rabb.

OOC: * In other countries these batsmen might have steadied just any ship, but this is Gruenberg.

OOC: We will declare at 450 or at day 4 lunch.

The day started slowly with Cosumar only managing to score around 2.4 runs per over. It took until the end of the 9th over to get the last Cosuman wicket which left Mossulia with a total of 346 to chase. To start the day Adrian Grant and Carlos Novello went into bat. As things got going Grant started to steadily rack up the runs while Novello hit many fours to quickly get him to his half century. A few balls later and not that far into the day Novello was bowled out for a total of 62 runs off of 67 balls. Harriet Jole then came in to bat and started to rack up the runs with Grant. Grant managed his half-century with a six and continued hitting well until Lunch when he was on 94. After Lunch Grant was quickly over 100 runs and it was the first Mossulian century. Harriet Jole also managed to hit many more runs before the end of play and was soon at her half century. With play coming to a close Mossulia are on 278/1 and are trailing Cosumar by 68 runs and have 9 wickets in hand. We are currently hitting at 3.61 runs per over which is slightly slower than Cosumar's run rate (3.74 per over) but we clearly have the advantage at the minute. Unlike poor unfortunate Ewan...

They had managed to end up in the desert. But things weren't going too well. Basically they had camped the night. Then in the morning they had gone for a walk to look for some water. Sadly after walking for a while they realised they were lost and tired. Then suddenly they saw a MacDonald in the barren landscape. They had ran at it and opened the door... and found that they had ran into a boulder. Ewan shrugged.

"Well where do we go to now?"

"I don't know..."

"Look I'm not stumbling around the desert."

"Got anything better to do?"

"Well I could be playing cricket if it wasn't for a broken old coach."

"Yes well your stuck in a desert so tough."

"Okay lets just stumble about then."

"God were going to die."

"Hey it's my job to insult you plan!"

"It was never my plan."

"Then whose's was it?"

"I'm not sure."

"Do you have a plan?"

"Yes."

"What is it?"

"Retrace our footprints in the sand."

"That does sound like a good plan."

"So shall we do it?"

"Yes."

And so they began to retrace their steps. Sadly for them the wind can be counted on to screw you up.

Genyria v. Eastfield Lodge

Genyria bowled out for 333

Just after tea this afternoon, Genyria's national side were bowled out by Eastfield Lodge for 333. What might have been considered a poor start yesterday was made up for by a good showing by the middle order and a stonking return to form for Gerard Avril, who slogged Eastfield's bowlers for plenty of boundaries as well as cheeky singles, racking up 102 runs, by far the best performance of the test so far.

The dismissal of Antony Anselm after his 91 partnership with Gerard Avril shocked everyone -especially Gerard, who was promptly also sent back to the pavilion in exactly the same way. And so the Stretton brothers came to the wicket; theirs was another success story, as they quickly marked up a 98 partnership. Elder brother Alex was dismissed on the last ball before tea, 55 overs into the day.

After tea, Will Stretton stayed in briefly, but the arrival on-field of the ill-experienced tail-enders meant Genyria's assault quickly crumbled. Not eight overs had passed from tea when poor Crispin Mauntell, who walked off with cheeks to match the brilliant red of his cap, was dismissed hit wicket - the first example of that in living memory in Genyrian cricket. Genyria, then, were all out for 333, after just shy of 97 overs of play since Avril took his place at the wicket yesterday.

After a brief pause, Eastfield Lodge will be put in to bat for the second time. Genyrians will be consoled to observe that the Lodgers have a deficit of 188 to overcome before they even dare to think of winning the test.

Innings defeat looks very likely as batting order is annihilated

The first test in Genyria, and Eastfield Lodge's first recorded professional cricket match of any sort at all levels for that matter, has had several turns for the worst, with the hosts closing their first innings having posted a total score of 333, picking up what seemed to be a weak performance the previous day. After the EL team were bowled out for a measly 145, the Genyrian team seemed determined to do even worse, posting up an even worse score of 102 in just few overs less (albeit the fact that they had lost 6 less men). At the close of play, the Genyrian scorecard was shaping up quite nicely for the EL fans: (OOC: Sorry for pinching these Genyria.)
1 AVRIL, G.L. not out 49
2 GRIFLETT, L.P. c. Williams b. Dipsy 25
3 KETTERING, T. * c. & b. Ritendus 21
4 MOREAUX, A.J-B. l.b.w. b. Pingu 0
5 GOSHAWK, G.T.W. c. Laa-Laa b. Dipsy 0
6 ANSELM, A.C. † not out 0
Extras (3 b, 1 lb, 2 w, 1 nb) 7
Total (4 wickets; 34 overs) 102

As one can see, it was quite a decent performance by the bowlers, especially Dipsy, getting two wickets. Rintedus' slow ball caught captain Kettering off-guard, leading to a badly hit slog that went straight upwards, and Rintedus was underneath it to make a comfortable catch and quite a shock wicket. However, one person who refused to give way was the opening Genyrian batsman, Gerard Avril, who managed to post 49 not out, despite the fact that he could have, and should have, been caught out twice, but both catches were dropped. These failures would come back to haunt the team as Avril went on to make 102 on the next day:
1 AVRIL, G.L. c. Laa-Laa b. Dipsy 102
2 GRIFLETT, L.P. c. Williams b. Dipsy 25
3 KETTERING, T. * c. & b. Ritendus 21
4 MOREAUX, A.J-B. l.b.w. b. Pingu 0
5 GOSHAWK, G.T.W. c. Laa-Laa b. Dipsy 0
6 ANSELM, A.C. † c. Tinky Winky b. Juanito 38
7 STRETTON, A.P. st. Spring b. Daniels 49
8 STRETTON, W.R. l.b.w. b. Po 53
9 SERGIUS QUERCUS, M. c. Spring b. Rindetus 10
10 MAUNTELL, C. hit wicket 8
11 APPLEBY, N.P.R. not out 6
Extras (5 b, 7 lb, 6 w, 3 nb) 21
Total (all out; 96.5 overs) 333

Wicket-Keeper Anselm didn't go quietly either, posting a partnership of 91 with Avril before being caught by Tinky Winky. This break in partnership sent Avril walking a few overs later. However, after the dismissal of that partnership, a partnership of 98 sprung up between the two Stretton brothers. But with their dismissals, the tail-enders were quickly sent away, with one somehow hitting his own wicket for what is reportedly the first time in Genyrian history. So, a target of 333, and 188 was required to avoid an innings defeat. Which now seems likely:
DANIELS run out 3
SPRING b. Mauntell 2
WILLIAMS c. Mauntell b. Sergius Quercus 3
RINTEDUS b. Mauntell 0
ROMAJ not out 15
PINGU c. Anselm b. Appleby 1
TINKY WINKY c. Anselm b. Appleby 2
JUANITO not out 2

Extras (1w) 1
Total 29

We really can't say much, except for that Mauntell and Appleby seem to be on really great form, with Mauntell having already got 5 wickets in this match, and we expect him to get much more.

No colour, this is Cricket.

Rain Plays In Favor
Elevens Take First Inning

Jamey Jones, Colmark

The second day of Test play in Colmark ended far better than expected, as brilliant bowling by Lielman and D. Collingwood resulted in North Chicanan maintaining their lead as they move into their third inning 291/10 to 165/10. More impressive in the result was the lower play of overs, with the Elevens holding off Colmark in 48 overs compared to the relatively lackluster play by the team yesterday.

Thoughts will move into concern when North Chicanan returns to tomorrow for completion of their second inning, as the squad is down 6 batsman with a 160 result after 47 overs. The Colmark bowlers came alive, probably in response to the spectacular play by the Elevens bowlers, knocking Jones, Lielmin, Strangefellow, Bollinger, Swansen and Cook out on wickets, leaving national manager Kasey James left with a poor playing half that scored only 35 in their overs during the first inning. James said yesterday he hoped that that the play of Lielmin and the Collingwood brothers (although they really didn't contribute to the results of the first inning) would help lift the squad through the rest of their time during the first Test. We shall see if this continues during the forthcoming third day of the Test.

From Spitfyred1:Coffee Cakes 338/4 (78 overs) (This innings 626/9)
Spitfyred1 continued to fail at getting the wickets they need. The Fyreballz have another wicket to earn before they can bat. The team is practically begging to bat. They feel that they do not have much time left and want to score. The team is reasonably sure that they will get the wicket they require early tommorrow. But what to do when they get to bat. A famous batsman gave them some hints.
Just hit for the boundaries. The sixes and fours will pick up. That Coffee Cakes team does not seem to have a strong knowledge of the game. As a result, they might drop a lot of balls. Just keep hitting it. I also suggest that you men try to stretch before batting. Before batting it would be advisable to be lithe. You must prevent injuries

GCF CRICKET: KRY v TBI, FIRST TEST
Day One Report

With a party atmosphere, and a full house, at the magnificent theatre of cricket that is Avidia's Vale Park, the stage was set for a real thriller of a game. On a slightly green pitch, with the sky as blue as their caps, Krytenia won the toss and elected to field.

Their opponents, a strong line-up from the sporting powerhouse that is The Babbage Islands, were in no mood to hang about. Opening bowlers Kyran Pitt and Noel Möller found the going heavy, as fine stroke play from Charles Harvey and Simon Butler put the tourists in a commanding position in the opening overs. With the score at 81, however, Pitt changed his tack; the slower ball passed in front of Butler's swing, and caught him square on his leading pad. It's a long and lonely walk back to the pavillion when you know you've got out through your own mistake; Butler soon had company though, as two overs later Harvey succumbed. His wafted edge was snaffled by Dickie Soliosta behind the wickets, and the scoreboard went from an ominous 81-0 to a somewhat healthier 93-2. The break in play seemed as good a point as any, and with the sky clouding over, the players took a slightly early lunch.

Nourishment taken (and, thankfully, cracks of blue reappearing above), it appeared that the Bumblebees' batsmen were still hungry. The Bennett-Ward combination took their knocks and made a couple of their own. David Bennett saluted the ground as he became the first man to make a Test fifty at the Vale; all-rounder George Ward, in fine fettle, followed not long after as the pair made a hundred and twenty for the third wicket. Their main victim in this plundering mission was Cyan Caps' spinner Caoimhín Ó Dàibhidh, his afternoon summed up in one moment as a huge six from Ward sent a few fans in the Members' Enclosure diving for cover.

Alas, all good things must come to an end, and when Bennett sent one down the throat of Shaun Zelic at deep extra cover, it was to a hearty round of applause for a superb innings. As the islanders faught to steady the ship, Zelic turned poacher to take the wicket of Alexander Wood; a thickish edge held well at second slip by Stewart Saunders.

Still the big target remained though; the old adage of the "nervous nineties" rang true, thankfully for the home side. Ó Dàibhidh, getting his head back in gear and finally taking the big one. Ward, looking to once again knock the Krytenian twirler into the stands, swung and missed dancing down the wicket; Soliosta swiped his bails, and it was exit, pursued by what might have been.

Ó Dàibhidh's next over, meanwhile, produced the Test's first duck. A particularly fierce arm ball (well, fierce for a spinner, anyway) beat poor Allen Palmer all ends up, and it was into the Babbage tail. Henry Anderson got himself suicidally run out going for a run that just wasn't there, Thomas Morgan edged one into the cordon, and when wicket-keeper Edward Griffiths was foxed by the dreaded Ó Dàibhidh googly it was practically all over. It was left, though, to the man who'd bowled the first ball of the innings to bowl the last; Kyran Pitt making a mess of Nathaniel Adams' stumps to give him a very reasonable figure of 3-64, and ending the visitors' innings on 326.

A reasonable target to aim for, then, for the Krytenians; alas, no-one seemed to have told Stewart Saunders there was no rush. Facing the first ball of the Cyan Caps; innings, he edged it straight into the waiting hands of Butler, and the opener went for that ultimate shame - the platinum duck.

Steady hands at the tiller required, and such was the speed of the dismissal that Bob McQuillan forewent the night-watchman. Soliosta and Trevor Maynard saw out the remaining seventeen balls to bring the innings to a rather neat 11-1 at stumps.

The match, then, is delicately poised even at this early stage; much will depend on whether Adams and his band of bowlers can break through the long batting line-up facing them; and, if they can, whether the pitch will turn in favour of late-match specialists Zelic and Ó Dàibhidh. Intriguing stuff.

Coffee Cakes Sports Network interview with... Mike Grissom.

CCSN: The team did well again today, and will bat again tomorrow, which begs the question: Are you satisfied so far with what you've seen these last 2 days?
MG: Satisfied would be a decent choice of word. I'm a bit disappointed with the top half of the order, but the way the middle batters played today was fantastic.

CCSN: At some point tomorrow the team will finally not bat, what is the goal for when the Fyreballz are batting?
MG: Well, I've heard their batters are aggressive, so the bowlers will have to find some way of causing them to make mistakes, allowing us to send them down quickly. Our lads in the field will be on high alert for deep hit balls, too. Enough sixes will sink the great effort we've had so far.

CCSN: What if the Fyreballz have to play on?
MG: We'll cross that bridge when if we get to it. Every team at this level of competition are very skilled, so we won't take anything for granted.

CCSN: Was any preparation prior to the competition undertaken besides the usual?
MG: Well, we felt that to win the whole thing we needed a good all-around team. We were lacking in some places, but we'll see if they've been corrected.

CCSN: Which places?
MG: Well, fielding and defensive batting. The batting practice has greatly helped us, judging by the squad's performance, and we'll have to see about the catching drills, our fielding was good to begin with, but Bayne, and Raikkonen we were worried about. They seem up to speed now, though. Thank yous go out to our fielding coach Wayne Rooney for the hard work there.

CCSN: Are you confident now on the fielding?
MG: Yes, very confident. The team is ready, willing, and hopefully able to withstand this challenge and finish the job.

Genyrian dressing room, day two

Postby Genyria » Thu Mar 03, 2011 12:42 am

Crispin had managed to set aside thoughts of his embarrassment during Eastfield Lodge's 18 overs, but as he got into the dressing room a feeling of abject failure swept over him. He slumped down on a bench in despair.

Tarquin came up to him. "Come on, Crispin," he said, sitting next to him. "These things happen in cricket—"
"No they don't! No one's been out hit wicket at first-class lev—"
"Crispin, listen. You are 24 and bowling for your national team. You are a very good cricketer. Why do you think I selected you? Things go wrong and things go well — that's the joy of the game. You've clean bowled two people today and caught another, and yesterday you took five men's wickets and caught a sixth! So, come on — cheer up. Get changed and we'll go to the chippy — how does that sound?"
Almost weeping, Crispin nodded his assent wordlessly, and began to get changed.

Tarquin got up and left the room, to make a brief statement to the press. He strode into the press room, stood in front of the table.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press: good evening. As captain I am thrilled that we've been able to take so many Lodger wickets in just their last 18 overs, after having set them a fairly high target. Tomorrow we hope to break out some more aggressive bowling, which may let a few more runs slip through but should, with any hope, send Eastfield's tail-enders packing pretty rapidly.

"I intend later this evening to have discussions with the Lodger captain to invite him to play one or two one-day matches after we've finished the test, so that all the wonderful supporters who've paid their money to see five days of cricket get to see five days of cricket. I will, of course, check with the GCF authorities before any such event takes place.

"Thanks go out to every Genyrian who's been following our progress across the land, and of course to the die-hard fans who have made there way here to support us in our first ever international test. Thank you for listening; I will take one question — You, sir."

"Roger Westcliff, The Optimate Sports. What have you got to say about Crispin Mauntell's dismissal?

Tarquin sighed. "It's a great shame that that happened, but in cricket, as in life, these things happen. I prefer to look at Crispin's overall performance over the test so far. He has already taken 7 wickets and 2 catches — pretty good, I think, for a 24 year old newbie to the first-class cricket arena. Thank you; I will take no further questions today. Good night."

Tarquin strolled out of the room. One journalist cried out after him, but he was ignored. And so Tarquin marched off to the local chippy with Crispin and the rest of the team.
