The Vonghurst Star
VTV gone mainstream?

VONGHURST - One of the lasting impacts of Taxgate is that VTV became the country's Olympic broadcaster. CBN, who had originally been awarded the rights to broadcast both the V Winter and Summer Olympics withdrew their bid when they learned of the taxes that the Cafundelense would impose on them and thus, the small, somehow publicly funded VTV won the rights to broadcast the games. Before this, the network was practically unheard of outside of it's small group of viewers and those who did know of it only knew of it through all the stunts the network pulled, upon itself, the unsuspecting public and much to the ire of CBN and TV their competitors.

It was pure chance that they were awarded the rights to host the games. An aligning of the stars that only happens once every thousand or so years, and an aligning of the stars which proved to be one of the biggest successes for the network. Millions around the country tuned in to see the Sao Jorge Olympics and in doing so they were part of an olympic experience that almost no-one else (especially KBS) could bring.

Their unique approach, which combined sport with comedy, was what was so great about them and for the first time people began to see this. In the immediate aftermath of the games, their ratings soared sky high, and today almost twelve years later they still remain one of the top rated channels. Both broadcast and satellite.

Yet, with this newfound success, something has changed in the network. Slowly, it has become more tame. Long gone are the days where, on a slow news day, the anchor would forgo his duties and instead, along with a crew of their newsies, try to sabotage the nightly newscast of CBN. Gone are the days where instead of the weather, "Weatherman" Al Sanches would see what kind of crazy shit he could get people to put on the signs they brought with them to TV's popular Weather on the Plaza segment. Sure, they still have stunts but, their scripted and usually the other people are in on the joke. They just poorly feign surprise when it happens.

Whats worse is that people eat it up. Last night, when dining with my husband, I overheard a group of Logrians laughing it up over one of the network's stunts where they got someone to start randomly courting the nearest person but, the difference between now and the old days is that they actually had to pay them. I really wonder what they'd think of the old invasion days.

Even these stunts have started to disappear. With each passing month, it seems like more of the networks old identity is being shed and replaced with an image of it self that is just like that of CBN and TV, one of just another network.

It seems like ages ago but, it's only really been twelve years since the days when Olympic coverage for VTV used to included dropping acid and talking to your self in the middle of a snowy forest. Twelve years ago, they had the perfect mix. They had all the trappings of any Olympic coverage and then some. More importantly, though, is that when they did stunts, they were unscripted. They were raw. They were real.

Mens Curling Trial Finals and What Ii Means for Ashton

PORTSHAM - With the Olympics only 8 days away, it seems rather odd that we have not determined which club will represent us in mens curling. However, last night at the Calvin Hobbes arena in downtown Portsham, we got one step closer when the Negroe Pride were able to overcome the Knickerbockers in a comeback 6-5 vicory in the first extra end. The club's undefeated season was kept alive, if only narrowly. Facing them will be Engine 13 Portsham. Throughout their local and state competitions they did unexpectedly well but, only recently did they begin to turn heads. Of course one of these two fine clubs will have to win the final and represent Virabia in Ashton but, what would each club bring to the table. Well, that's why I'm here.

The heavy favourite to win in tomorrows final is the Pride. They are amongst the most reputable curling clubs in the country and while most of their undefeated season has been the work of the mixed team, the mens side (of which only one person is on the mixed team), has still proven to be a top-tier curling club. One of the key components of their success has been their skip, Roy Harris. His near encyclopedic knowledge of how the rock behaves in nearly every circumstance makes him a force to be reckoned with and because of this (and his position as a professor of mathematics at Preston University) has earned him the rather appropriate nick name ' The Professor'.

The Professor played a major role in the Pride's comeback victory over the Knickerbockers. Going into the final side of regulation, the pride were down by two stones but, through some masterful work, he was able to make up the 2 point difference and send the match into extra sides where the team made quick work of their opposition.

Of course a good skip is nothing if he doesn't have a good team backing him. This is not something the Pride lack. Brothers Devon, Trey and Samuel Martino have proven themselves to be excellent curlers in their own right. While they may not have the amount of experience that Harris has, they are all excellent at what they do and in the future they could well make the main, mixed, squad.

What we get with the Pride is primarily confidence and consistency. Harris, the Martino brothers and even fifth-man Luís Earlsson each have more than fifteen years of curling experience under their belts. In their time, they have honed their skills to the point of near perfection. This is something that will serve them well against the international field and against Engine 13 tomorrow night.

The Pride's victory is not an inevitability though. Throughout this season, Engine 13 Portsham, a team comprised of five firefighters from the 13th firehouse in Portsham have become the cinderella story. In their first season of existence, they have defied all expectations and have not only made it to the Olympic Trials but, to the final of the olympic trials. Only one game away from representing the entire nation.

The team is particularly notable for their modesty on almost all matters. One can recall the now overused 'yay' meme as a prime example of this but, it extends way beyond it. For example, not many of you may know but, before this season, the teams skip Tomás Guerilló had never even curled yet, in a period of little more than six months, he has blossomed into a pretty good. This is no doubt due to his wealth of natural talent. Natural talent can only take you so far though and it's clear that Guerilló has built upon his sturdy base.

He is complimented by three strong curlers in Adam Anderson, Pete DuVille and Antonín Rivera. For the most part, they share Tomáses story. Only having recently come to the sport. That hasn't stopped them from defying all expectations and making it as far as they have.

The fact that they are new to the sport may be their downfall though. A common critique, which I echo us that they simply haven't played enough and that against the best teams they will crack under pressure, something that the've been able to avoid doing so far but, so far all of their competition has been relatively easy. Still, if they are able to stave off making amateur mistakes and cracking under pressure, their modesty will help them greatly. As the old saying goes, "Complacency brings defeat." Hey, we Virabis aren't known for our verse.

Either way, we should fare well in the Olympics. While, the Pride is certainly a safer bet than Engine 13, they are both fine curling clubs and it's a same only one can represent us in Ashton. Thus, we have little choice but to watch tomorrow as in front of an expected 110,000 person audience at a special strip at Bayview Arena. The coin toss for the LRFE is set for 2030. The match, on VTV.

The Thomasburg Post
Special Winter Olympic Coverage

Many who have been following the World Cup of Hockey have been made aware of the fact that the AHL and the Iron Tide's organization (that of the national ice hockey team) have parted ways this year. The split was originally planned, of course, but was spurred by the Allamunnic States' participation in the VI Winter Olympic Games simultaneously to the Cup. The reason, of course, is that the Iron Tide went to the Cup (where they are now 4-0-0, for those who don't know), while the AHL All-Star teams serve as the national teams for the Olympics. The men's team will be known simply as the "Blues" and the women's team as the "Lady Blues" for distinction reasons.

And now for the rosters. Players marked with a star/asterisk (*) are considered or projected to be impact players.

The Blues
Coach: Fedor Schroeder (Age: 47, Copenhagen Crimson (Sixth Season), Career Record: 307-55-30) - Schroeder is in his sixth season as the head coach of the AHL's most consistantly dominant team. While much of his considerable success is owed to a good front office for the Crimson and an already-dominant team, it shouldn't be missed that he's a rather competent coach in of himself, and has managed to keep that dominant streak alive.
Team Colors: Navy Blue and Steel Grey (more blue than grey, in contrast to the Iron Tide's uniforms)(uniforms will also have a different-color on the right sleeve; this sleeve will have a different color based on a player's domestic team's colors, which are noted with the team on the player's information)
Style Modifier: (.95)

Overview:
The male Blues are about as power-oriented as you get. Since Fedor Schroeder is coaching them, they'll also be playing rather defensively; Schroeder trains players to go with his first general reaction to facing the powerplay: turtle like hell. Offensively, expect them to do a lot of set-up, as it were, trying to set up better shots with more chances of success; they don't just barrage goalies with shots, generally, instead trying to clear the way and ensure that each shot that is taken is much more likely to find it's mark. Fighting is always a possibility with pretty much any player, but they're not totally undisciplined: a drop of the gloves here or there is just part of how they play.

GK#14 Erik Schuler (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 301lbs; Age: 25 - Copenhagen Crimson (Crimson))

The Lady Blues
Coach: Olga Khruschachev (Age: 51, Northwatch Rangers (Eleventh Season), Career Record: 701-169-282) - Khrushcachev isn't one of the longest-tenured coaches in the AHL for nothing; she's kept the Northwatch Rangers in a state of notability and has made a habit of being an annual playoff threat (some years are harder than others, but the fact is they're always at least in close contention). Khruschachev is an offensively-minded coach, who believes that the key to victory is to simply score quickly and hamper, if not actually completely prevent, the opponent from doing the same.

Overview:
The Lady Blues, by contrast, are much more finesse-geared, which tends to be the role that female players generally play in the AHL, since it's difficult for the women to be as large as most of the male players. That said, the Lady Blues are still Allamunnic, so they'll be one of the most physical women's teams there is. As mentioned above, Khruschachev is an offensively-minded coach who prefers to keep the puck on the opponent's side of the ice as long as possible and to pepper the goal with shots constantly. While not as likely to fight as the men's team players, these ladies aren't averse to dropping the gloves every now and then.

First Line - Starters
LW#11* Danielle Andicek (Height: 5'8"; Weight: 162lbs; Age: 29 - Innsbruck Valkyries (Purple, White))

Olympics: Monk sets new Olympic record in 1 500 m entry race
AEROPAG—The Monastic Olympic Committee of the Archregimancy will participate in the VI Olympic Winter Games in Ashton, though it nearly took an act of God to make it happen.

An outlandishly-dressed man arrived at the Olympic Tower this morning bearing an ornate, hand-written document. After a brief stop at the information desk to pinpoint his destination, he sprinted past the elevators to the nearest stairwell, where he began his epic ascent of one hundred seventy-seven stories and over fifteen hundred meters of stairways—more than the height of the Tower itself—to the Olympic Council’s headquarters. Gasping for air, he delivered the entries with just nine hours to spare; the time taken to scan the entries and transmit them electronically to the Ashton organizing committee (which is apparently so busy preparing for the Games that it has not taken the time to name itself) was less than a blink of an eye compared to the journey from the Dreamed Realm to the clerk’s hands.

An Olympic Tower security guard spotted the monk’s stairwell dash, and after spending several moments in stunned silence, alerted paramedics to the situation. Doctors were standing by when the representative reached the Olympic Council, but after a routine scan, proclaimed him “fully healthy…well, physically, at least” and sent him on his way after a bit of rest. “In twenty-three years, I’ve never seen anything like it”, first responder Féliqa Mariniäsa recalled. “I wonder what he ate for breakfast.”

Some witnesses to today’s events considered that religious factors might have played a role. One bystander told AT Sports, “Either they’ve got some really cool spiritual guidance up there in that nuthouse, or some really cool drugs. Of course they say they don’t cheat, but you can’t really trust anyone these days. Sorry, can I see your credentials again?” A few said that they had been persuaded to learn more about the monks’ Orthodox Christian philosophy. “I think Orthodoxy is a pretty cool guy, eh?” said a senior interviewee on condition of anonymity. “Climbs Jacob’s Ladder and doesn’t [sic] afraid of anything.”

“Is outrage!” (sic), said MOCTA spokesperson Fr Vasily the Heavily-Accented, who could not be reached for comment at the time of this writing.

THE MONASTIC TIMES

MONK SETS NEW OLYMPIC RECORD
Lack of Medal Ceremony Declared "Outrage"

By Fr. Nicholas the Scribe

Monastic sports fans across the Archregimancy were celebrating last night after Fr. Justinian the Swift set a new record in the 1500 vertical metre entry race - a record all the more remarkable for being set before the sixth winter Olympiad had even officially started.

Fr. Justinian's feat was given a prominent place in the Aeropag Tribune, a newspaper in the heathen Mammon-worshipping Ordinary Reality nation usually colloquially described as 'Commerce Heights so as to avoid outlining its Byzantine government and sporting structure. Regrettably we here use 'Byzantine' in the secular allegorical sense rather than as indicating an aspiration towards a traditional Byzantine symposium between church and state.

Team spokesman Fr. Vasily the Heavily-Accented was quick to denounce the lack of a medal ceremony for Fr. Justinian. "Is Outrage!" stated Fr. Vasily at a hastily-convened press conference in Ashton. "If any other nation is setting of the record, they are being given full medal ceremony! Is sign of anti-Orthodox conspiracy designed to stop the playing of our beautiful anthem."

No representatives of the organising committee were prepared to comment when contacted by this reporter.

Profile of an Athlete

Name: Amy Junghans
Competition(s): Gymnastic Skating Ladies' Individual (Women's Individual Figure Skating)
Age: 20
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 110lbs
Bio: Amanda Junghans was born in Copenhagen on April 12th, 1993 to Dayne and Anja Junghans. Amy started skating at the age of 5 with her father, a college ice hockey player. Amy had a fairly typical upbringing, though instead of playing field or ice hockey, volleyball, or gridiron, she stuck with what she knew and loved: skating. While maintaining her grades and competing heavily in local competitions and competitions in Stalhamark and Northwatch, Amy came onto the radar as one of the better rising skaters in the country. After graduating high school (on time at age 17) she enrolled at the Vienna Arts Academy, getting in based on the portfolio of video of her skating. Since then, she has been able to practice her discipline as an art and as a regular class, and is currently the most highly-considered Gymnastic (Figure) skater in the Federation.

"It's no good, Miroslav."

"But, Sir..."

"No arguments Miroslav, my mind is made up. The people of our islands are furious with you. You have embarassed our nation, this government, yourself, and myself. I simply cannot allow your incompetence to hold back our nation any longer. You are dismissed from your role. We will be releasing a press package shortly, I suggest you give no interviews if you wish to minimise the amount of ridicule you will receive."

"Prime Minister, I have tried to fulfil my duties with all of my enthusiasm, my undersecretaries, the civil servants, they have let me down, I was not informed of any..."

"Miroslav were you or were you not the Minister for the Development of Sports and Culture?"

"Yes, Prime Minister, but..."

"And Miroslav, have you or have you not failed to make any progress with the main objectives for your term in office?"

"Prime Minister we have Football Teams ready for inclusion into a league now, we..."

"Yes Miroslav, and absolutely no league system to speak of whatsoever. The same with the Curling League. And the Ice Hockey League. And now I am outraged to find out that you failed to express any interest whatsoever in entering any of the events at the Winter Olympics! Do you have any idea how humiliating it is to be told by a reporter that the nation you are meant to lead, a nation that dalls almost entirely within the Arctic Circle, has failed to enter ANY athletes to a competition of winter sports?! Get out of my sight Miroslav. Send in Sara on your way out."

"Yes, Prime Minister. Thank you..."

Sara Poelski had not intended to eavesdrop, the chair she was shown to had been exceptionally close to the door though. And was that a wink from the secretary who had shown her to it? She stood up quickly as she heard the approaching footsteps of the former cabinet member getting closer to where she was sat.

"You may go in, Miss Poelski." Miroslav Milevskyi looked a beaten man, waht was left of his grey wispy hair was clinging to the sweat on his weathered forehead.

"Thank you Miroslav." Sara walked into the office of the Prime Minister. She had a certain inkling into what was coming, and to her surprise she found she wasn't scared. She had waited for a senior cabinet position ever since her shock election to the Federal Government from Surtsey the year before. Hers was a political career on the up, and she planned to grab any oppurtunity with both hands.

"Prime Minister."

"Hello, Sara. I trust my secretary showed you to the chair where you can hear what happened?" Sara nodded. "Ah good, I am fond of that chair you know, saves a lot of time. Sara I'll cut to the chase, I want you to be the Minister for the Development of Sports and Culture. Miroslav's idea of the position seemed to include rather more enjoyment of our cultures than our sports. Namely the bar culture. And the stripclub scene. I trust you will be more responsible."

"Of course Prime Minister. I have big plans for the job. We may be a small and fledgling nation but I know the hearts of our peoples burn for sporting competition. There are already competitive relationships between many of our member islands, I intend to exploit this."

"Excellent, Sara. This is what I want you to do; delegate the cultures task to an under-minister. Seperate the department in two if you have two, we can take care of that from here, but that's your decision to make. I want someone young and dynamic to get our sporting competitions and youth training up and running. We can rule the sporting world from the very top of the globe. Obviously there are some transport issues to work out, and the obvious climactic difficulties. And the lack of hills. I'm not expecting downhill skiing champions, I simply want us to be competitive on a global scale in the sports we have an apititude for."

"Absolutely, Prime Minister."

"I have made arrangements for you to travel to the Winter Olympics, Sara. From there you will observe other nations and their performances. I want scouts out, looking at their training regimes and observing how they carry themselves on the global scene. We are a tiny federation, and our geography means we are far more suited to domestic competition than international as of yet. It is unlikely many countries will be intimidated by your presence and I hope many of them will offer advice and guidance. Ask questions, investigate, and be open and honest. Nothing underhand or secret. Understood?"

"Yes, Prime Minister, I look forward to it."

"Good, and then when you get back we can talk more about the formation of a Football Association, and the curlers and the hockey players and what have you. A golf course or two might be nice as well..." The Prime Minister tailed off at that, with a misty look in his eye and a definite hint at a golf swing affected his stance. "Well anyway, my secretary has the tickets and the arrangements for travel outside. All the best, and welcome to the cabinet. Congratulations, Miss Poelski."

"Thank you Prime Minister, I hope I can serve my country well." And with that, Sara turned and walked out the door, waiting patiently for the door to shut before pumping her fist exuberantly. She looked at the weather outside as she approached the secretary's desk. It was dark, as it always was at this time of year, and it was snowing on frozen ground. Yes, sports all year in this climate would be a challenge, but one Sara was looking forwards to. But first, to the Olympics...

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Due to the large workload of events currently scheduled for the GX-Centre, it has become clear to AWOOC that the arena will not be able to cope with all of this. As such, four additional arenas, placed by the AWOOC on reserve, will be used for the ice hockey preliminaries - the Icehouse in Dereapolis, Claret Gardens in Noton, the Wyebank Arena in Hefor-on-Wye, and the Salopia Convention Centre and Arena (SCCA) in Shruton, as well as the arenas already confirmed in Leston and Ousevale. AWOOC apologises for the short notice of this announcement.

The nation SFY feels a little ignored because of their small size and no major teams. But the ignorance will hurt their opponents. Kewl Kat and Stan Mina are quickly shaping up to be favorites in Women's snowboard cross and the Men’s 50 km Classical Cross-Country Ski. They hope that a gold medal will put Spitfyred1 on the map.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The full Olympic schedule is now finalised and has been released for public viewing.

AWOOC would also like to take this opportunity to apologise to the Liventian men's curling team, who were drawn as the fifth team in Group B but were unfortunately omitted from the official press release of the group draw. This has now been rectified.

The common room on the 27th floor of VTV headquarters is exactly what you think it is. A common room, a place to go and unwind for a moment. Cool your jets after a period of work. It's normally the centre of life in the building. Ten to twenty people crowding it's walls talking, planning and just generally procrastinating. Today, though, it lay mostly vacant as anyone who is anyone in the sports bureau is thousands of kilometres away in Ashton for the Olympics.

Thus, only three people are found in the room. Two are seated next to each other. Both reading an issue of the Vonghurst Star. The one to the left is a rather dashing young man. Lightly tanned, short slicked back black hair and a figure to die for. To his right is some what of the opposite. Not exactly fat but, not exactly thin, pale skinned, long locks and a beard which goes all the way down to his slight man boobs, he is the epitome of another kind of beauty. The rugged outdoorsy one. The other man who is tucked away in the corner of the room is much older than the other two. His hair grey but, rather full. His head is tilted down, sleeping but, someone just passing by could easily mistake him for a corpse.

"Tim, you read this?" asks the man to the left, "The Star says, now get this, that VTV has lost it's roguish charm and is no longer, raw."

"I know," comments Tim with a tone of disappointment in his voice, "I know"

The room falls silent as the man to the left, Owen, goes back to his paper. A second later, Tim returns to is. Just as the silence begins to get comfortable, though, the older man in the room, snaps to life and says, "So, what'er you gonna do about it, eh? Sit here and complain. Sit here and only reminiss about the days gone by? Accept you're fate without atleast fighting it. That what you guys going to do."

The fact that the old man is awake much less alive startles both Owen and Tim and they take a second to regather themselves and in the midst of many 'err's and 'uum's the two of them both took turns saying "I don't know". The only difference is that Owen tacked on "Is there anything to do?" at the end of his.

In response to their answers the old man sighs and mutters some incomprehensible gibberish to himself. Wondering if he missed anything important, Owen asks, "What did you just say?"

"Nothing", replies the old man, "So, do you want to do anything about the networks fate?"

Both Owen and Tim nod their head. As he sees this a small smile spreads across the old man's face, "Do you two want to go to Ashton?"

Slightly flabbergasted at his offer, both Tim and Owen sit there thinking about his offer for a minute. Speaking for the both of them, Tim says, "I don't think we even can. Everyone who was selected already left two days ago."

Owen cuts in, "Yea. Gotta question their choice. Lindi and Marco for anchors/segment lead. They're the cancer that is killing this network."

"Indeed", says the old man, "Indeed. It doesn't have to be that way though."

"But how?", asks Tim.

"Here", the man reaches in to his pocket and pulls out four plane tickets as well as two light blue cards, "Take these. The second ticket is if you need to bring someone along. The flight leaves tomorrow. Early. Real early. 500 if you want to make it"

"How did you get these?", asks Owen who is inspecting his boarding passes, "and why are you just giving them to us?"

"Not important", says the old man rather quickly, "Let's just say that I have a lot of pull with the council. Anyways, as long as you vow to at least try to make things right again, these tickets are yours."

"And how would we do that?" asks Tim.

"Just have fun", says the old man before repeating himself, "Just have fun!"

Problem? Blame the KBS!

ASHTON - Yesterday was perhaps one of the most important days of the entire Olympics, at least for those with a vested interest in the fate of the curling and hockey teams, and given the popularity those two sports enjoy, quite a few. Already the result of those draws, especially the mens' hockey draw, will stir up some controversy which I'll get into later (I'm a greedy bastard and want you to read this whole thing. Not just the exciting part!).

First, though, I will go over the curling draws and in an effort to quell that our coverage of sport is heavily masculocentristic, I'll first talk about the ladies draw.

Virabia, who will be represented in the Olympic tournament by the Dry Den Mothers (a group of five mothers from Dryden, Brantaland), has been drawn into a rather unremarkable group B. With no real challenge to the Den Mothers from any of the other teams in the group, they are the hands down favourite to take the top spot in the group. Granted, we don't know much about the history of the other teams but, from the little information we have been able to garner, they are just no where near the skill level that the Den Mothers are at.

When asked her opinion of the draw, team skip Marsha Rogers told us that she was, "extremely optimistic" about their chance to make it out though. She also said that they will still take each match seriously because, "The other clubs still made it to the Olympics, and that has to count for something". The exact fate of the women's curling team will play out in the following days, and it will be very interesting to see how well they do. At the end of the day though, we expect them to at least get out of the group and then some.

As for the men's side, Engine 13 Portsham, who are still fresh off their 5-4 stunner upset over CC Negroe Pride will be making the trip to Ashton where they have been drawn into Group F along side names like the Landau Institute, Akbarabad, Consumar as well as the vulpines from Vekaiyu. While no team in the group looks to be as strong as the Virabi squad, it is a much scarier outlook than that of the women's team. The doctors from Landau Institute have shown them selves to be more than a competent enough team and could prove a rather tough challenge for the firefighters in group play. They are not the only threats to our squad though. The teams representing both Vekaiyu and Consumar look to be rather formidable opponents and a few mistakes could cost us one or both of these matches and perhaps a place in the next round.

Like my colleague Róberto iterated in my article that previewed the men's trial final, Tomás Guerilló is still in his first year of the sport, ever and, while we may (appropriately) applaud him on how well he's done so far, he's still a beginner and rather mistake prone and in any sport it's only one or two mistakes that separate the winners from the losers. Of course, he and Engine 13 Portsham will do everything they can to prevent the cracks from showing but, as history will show time and time again; when the match comes down to the wire, you gotta perform. No amount of conditioning can change that.

Still, we at The Star, are rather optimistic regarding the chances of both the men's and women's curling team. While the strongest clubs may not be making the trip to Ashton (they are almost all mixed), the Den Mothers as well as Engine 13 Portsham are both excellent teams. Both more than capable enough to take home the gold. It will not be an easy path to get there, however. Many strong opponents will await us later on in the tournament but, for now, you have to focus on the first hump.

While the draw for the curling tournaments has certainly been talked about, no draw has been talked about more than the Mens' Ice Hockey draw, where Virabia has been drawn into a group with the Landau Institute, Capitalizt SLANI and more importantly Kelssek. It has already been dubbed the group of death by many in the media.

No one has gone as far as VTV, though. More specifically Owen McReyes who when anchoring Sport Desk in a special Olympic episode went completely off book and said

In other news. The Mens' Ice Hockey Draw. I'm sure that you've heard of the news by now. Group of death, am I right. Well don't you find it a bit odd that in the Krytenian Olympics that we of all people get drawn into the group of death.

Funny! Right?

Well, it isn't. Someone sinister is behind this but who?

The KBS that's who. For years, they have been jelly of VTV's superior coverage of the Olympics. They have quietly cried every time we took to the air at the Olympics. For twelve years, that hatred has been boiling I tell you and now it's manifested itself. There is no doubt in my mind that they bribed the organizing committee to draw Virabia into the group of death. I mean what else would you expect from them? Exactly.

To get back at us, they punish our athletes Well, that is not tolerated! To all of those watching who are going to Krytenia, I ask you to show the KBS who's boss. Show them who they really are.

A network that no one cares about, from a country no one cares about, and one that is totally fucking inferior to VTV in every single way. I mean come on, does any one think their good? I don't!

Obviously, these quotes have made quite a stir in the headlines. Many have attacked Owen for inappropriately attacking the KBS and while they did not ask for one yet, they will undoubtedly do so in the near future. The other group that is silent on this matter is VTV, who hasn't so much as raised a finger about this incident and as such they are being attacked for seemingly allowing this to happen.

What they don't realise, though, is that this may just be signaling something. The old VTV may be coming back! Today it was the old past-time of KBS bashing but, I have a feeling that there will be more in the future. Sure, it may just be an isolated incident but, a man can hope, can't he?

COIA questions scheduling of winter pentathlon events

Ashton, KRYTENIA-- The National Olympic Committee of Ad'ihan (COIA) has questioned the Ashton Winter Olympics Organising Committee (AWOOC) decision to schedule the men's and women's Ad'ihani pentathlon events on the same day, rather than spread out over a number of days as is normally the case.

At the heart of the issue is the fact that under the current schedule, participants will face the daunting prospect of completing an alpine skiing run, a 1 km speed skating race, and a 7.5 or 10 km biathlon race on the same day, in addition to a ski jump or luge run.

"It's a bit of a head scratcher," admitted a COIA spokesman who did not want to be named. "Normally we'd see the biathlon, downhill and speed skating races on three separate days. It's safe to assume the AWOOC forgot to take fatigue levels into account."

An Ad'ihani Pentathlon Sports Union spokesman said the APSU, the sport's main governing body, recommended the event take place over at least two days to allow proper recovery for athletes.

AWOOC defends winter pentathlon schedule

AWOOC today issued a statement defending their single-day scheduling of the winter pentathlon events. A statement released read as follows:

Olympic multi-sport events are seen as the pinnacle of endurance. One need only look at the triathlon or modern pentathlon in the summer Games to realise this. As such, we will not be changing the scheduling of these events; however the most stamina-sapping event, the biathlon, will be the last held on each day.

(OOC: Without a point of reference, I went the same route as the modern pentathlon, which takes place on a single day.)

A Team and a Dream: The Story of the Taeshan Olympic Team

Announcements, announcements, announcements

Late last night winter olympic flag bearer was announced. The ever famous duty has been bestowed on Snowboarder Joshua Blue who won a silver medal in the last olympics. Former bearer of the flag, Shane Balck, was injured earlier this season and was unable to continue with his fellow mates into his third straight olympics. Blue won a silver medal in the Sao Jorge Olympics, and will look to do so again. In other news the victims, i mean, opponents, of the Gold Medalists in Mens Ice Hockey from the last olympics were announced. On the docket for the Purple Knights will be most notably the Cafundeun national team who will look to metaphorically knock the Knights of their high horse. Also in their group is a Sbirisky team that may give some surprises, and two unknowns from D land and Isles, and Meguroko who may prove to be problems if not properly prepared for.

The Vonghurst Star
Interview with Jesús Chrísto

ASHTON - Over the past two years, Nordic skier Jesús Chrísto has taken the Nordic Top Circuit by storm. He has excelled in every discipline; biathlon, combined, telemark, jumping and even plain old classic. As such, it comes as no surprise that he was chosen to bear the nations flag tomorrow night at the opening ceremonies. Last night, I had the privilege of interviewing him at his apartment in the Olympic village. So, with out further ado, my interview!

Q: So, I van tell from the look and feel of the apartment that you have begun to settle in. So far, what has been your opinions of the town of Ashton?

A: Due to schedule, I haven't been able to get out and enjoy the town as much as I would like but, when I have had the opportunity I have made it a point to get out and explore the town. As for my opinion of it; it's your quintessential mid-sized mountain town. Nothing real special aside from the Olympics. Still, my mates and I have found the good amongst the bad. Found one good pup worth hitting up.

Q: I hope you don't mind but could you possibly tell me which pub that is?

A: Aah, someone's lookin to get a bit hammered"

Q: Heh, yeah.

A: Well, unfortunately I don't know it's name. Look for a brick building on the main road, kinda near the centre of town. Unfortunately, that's all I really know. Sorry mate.

Q: No problem. Anyway, on to more pertinent matters!

A: Oh Boy!

Q: So, as we all know, you've been chosen as the nations flag bearer. How do you feel to have been bestowed such an honour?

A: Like you said, it's truly an honour. To be selected as the one person out of all of them to bear the flag of your country infront of the whole world. It's really something special. It's something you can't seek. It chooses you and the fact that the council thought me worthy to represent the country. Makes me real happy. Real happy and really proud y humble. All in one package.

Q: With your selection there has been some controversy over the fact that despite your talent in many fields you are only competing in one singular event. They argue that your abilities are being underutilised. Before we get into your opinions on the controversy, who is responsible for this. Was it your decision or one of the High Council?

A: It was a joint decision. They approached me first. They said that they wanted other athletes to get some of the spotlight and not have it be all Jesús. I went along with it though.

Q: Why though? The Olympics only happen once every twelve years and it's more likely that you won't as good as you are now when the Seventh Olympics come around. It just seems like you damage your career.

A: I know. Everyone has told me that it's a foolish move for my career but, to all of them I've said that at the end of the day it was my choice. The council would have had no problem entering me in every single event. As for why I made it? I figured it would allow me to focus all of my energy on one event. Not get tired out by having to compete every single day. I do want to enjoy my self a bit.

Q: I know that at the end of the day it's your choice but, one would think that you'd want to get as much glory out of your experience as possible. Make your name remembered.

A: Have you not considered that perhaps I'm not after glory. To me the Olympic experience is much more than just winning because in time, people will forget you. Even if you win 17 golds. Records are broken, time passes and eventually you're forgotten. It's just a fact of life. Even the games themselves, will be forgotten. Do you know where the first Olympics were held? No! So I figure that it'd be best just to make the most of it for my self. If that were by being in every free heel event, I would do that but it isn't.

Q: So, given that logic. Why do you do so well in the domestic circuit. As you said; you're going to be forgotten so why try?

A: The domestic circuit is my job. Have to do well. Puts the food on the table.

Q: Is the domestic circuit not amateur?

A: Cross country is akin to cycling. The most teams are semi-pro, then you have your full am and your full pro.

Q: Aah, so back to the controversy. What do you have to say to those who have been criticising your selection?

A: I'd say it's rather short sighted. Especially when you consider that the Olympic spirit is one of inclusiveness. The very fact that I'm only in one event means that others can compete, so in a way I'm keeping closer to the Olympic ideals than many others.

Q: Those others?

A: Those who feel that the only thing that matters is gold. Sure, it's shiny and pretty but, the lengths some people go to is way too far.

Q: Those lengths?

A: Doping. It's not as big in winter sports, though. Which I thankful for!

Q: Ok, I hope you don't mind if we switch topics but, with the Olympics only a few days away; Has it been hard to sleep at night?

A: A little bit. I've been here for two weeks now and the anticipation has been huge and, yes, it has been somewhat hard to sleep at night. Nothing a brownie or two can't solve!

(At this point our conversation got into stuff that would incriminate the both of us. Well, it should. I assume that hash is illegal in Krytenia)

Q: Ok, so before we call this to a close; One final question.

A: Sure.

Q: What are your expectations for these games.

A: In all honesty, I expect to do well and I'll do everything possible to do as well as I can. I've been skiing and shooting everyday trying to perfect my technique. It's all I can do.

Q: Ok, thanks a lot for this interview. We'll see you at the opening ceremonies!

Alpine Skiers Arrive in Krytenia

ASHTON - While most of the Virabi delegation has now been in Krytenia for the better part of two weeks; many of those competing in Alpine Skiing events have just arrived today. Fresh from the Alpine Skiing World Cup, we thought it appropriate to ask a few of them what kind of impact they thought their participation in the World Cup would have on them.

As most reading may know, this has been a subject of minor debate. A rather stupid debate it is, pointless, so we thought we'd end it once and for all by asking four of the skiers who arrived today what they thought the impact is below and perhaps once and for all people can shut up!

Socrates Reyes: "Oh, they argue about THAT. I always knew sport media to be rather dim but... not that dim. Well, I think it's good training. Now I know what to expect of not only others but more importantly myself.

Mickey Alva: "I dunno. See when it happens I guess. No use blabbing about it in a desperate plea to get ratings. Isn't there more interesting stuff than my fatigue?!"

Carli Roanoke: "Uuh. That's what I've missed while I was in Zwangzug and QoD? Good thing I was gone then. Wait, are you staring at my boobs?" "No... uuh, I like that bird on your chest. Real... artistic" "Oh really, I like it too"

Lisa Smith: "Ooh. I think it's only made me better. More prepared than I would have been with out it! Can't wait to apply what I've been doing there, especially for my win in Lexington, here on the worlds biggest stage."

So, there you have it. Please, stop talking about this! It's pointless. Really, really pointless, and in all honesty we should do so much better than... that.

Kelssek's Olympic hockey representatives confirmed
Hint: You should never have gotten your hopes up

The inability of professional hockey players to transcend space and time in order to play in two tournaments at once, as well as the intransigent selfishness of Kelssek Hockey League team owners who just want to cling on to their prize assets for all its worth in order to sell tickets, has been blamed for the fact that Hockey Kelssek is sending the under-21 team to the Olympics again.

Even if not for the fact that the team of what most people would consider the best hockey players this land has to offer is (hopefully) going to be occupied playing in the ongoing 14th World Cup of Hockey in Qazox during the Olympics, Kelssek Hockey League teams have stonewalled the continual efforts by Hockey Kelssek to get them to release their stars for more international play. And there is no sign that might change anytime soon.

It's already pulling teeth to get team managers to release players for the occasional World Cup of Hockey, say sources in Hockey Kelssek, and it seems the national association is tiring of the constant fight.

"It's getting to the point where we just wish we could strangle them through the phone line. The kinds of lies, mysterious illnesses and sprains that clear up completely in time for the top-of-the-table clash on Saturday, and the endless bitching we get if someone gets injured with the national team... we are losing the will to live." said Hockey Kelssek assistant general manager Don Walter.

Although both the players and fans both dearly want to see a proper Team Kelssek take on the world at the Olympics, it's unlikely that will happen, for the players' own good, according to team officials.

"The players are always going to want to play. Obviously elite, top-calibre ahletes are going to want to go for the Olympic medal. But quite simply, we can't have them on a schedule like this. We're heading into playoffs time, it's the pointy end of the season, and Hockey Kelssek does enough kidnapping of top talent at no benefit to us, anyway." said a spokesperson for the club owners' association. "It's unfortunate but I don't forsee any agreements for more international events."

Suggestions that perhaps it might be worth giving the nation and fans what they wanted were met with derisive laughter.

A day before Cabric's Olympic debut, the collective 22 members of the Olympic delegation have been in Ashton, Krytenia since Wednesday night to visit the Olympic village and venues.

While not having a massive delegation like some other nations, Cabirc is attempting to see quality win out over quanitity. While any medals would be a great accomplishment, Cabric's modest goal of 3 medals is possible.

Cabric's best Chances:
Pandir Qadiche- Figure Skating.
Thomas Neuman- Men''s Luge
Ryan Garfield- SkiJumping Large Hill

The world and Cabric awaits tommorrow night's opening ceremonies and the start of the Games themselves.

19:58, The Rutian Grounds, Ashton

The stadium was filled to capacity, with the murmur of anticipation buzzing around the stands like a swarm of hornets. The clock on the large stadium scoreboard, installed as part of the stadium improvements for these Olympics, ticked over, the analogue face showing one minute to eight.

And then it went dark.

It was supposed to of course, and the crowd all knew that; but the darkness, and the hush that descended over the stadium, was an eerie thing to witness. Until, of course, the PA broke that silence.

“Welcome, one and all, to the city of Ashton, and the Sixth Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.”

The video screen kicked into life. A montage of scenes from the last few years, accompanied by a clock in the bottom right counting down the thirty seconds remaining until eight o'clock. The images passed: the awarding of the games to Ashton, the NSOC President calling upon the youth of the world at the Closing Ceremony in São Jorge, a time-delay photo sequence of various Olympic building projects, and finally a bevy of schoolchildren hollering “WELCOME!!!” into the camera. The countdown hit ten, and the crowd joined in, counting down to zero.

And then it went dark.

Only for a mere second, this time; the sky soon becoming illuminated with fireworks. Red, white, blue, yellow, green; turning the night sky into a multicoloured kaleidoscope of sparks, and booming their percussive celebration to the world. A couple of pyrotechnic effects sped around the roof of the stadium, and it was time to begin.

On the field – such as it was, covered over with light blue plastic – dancers from the various high schools (and at least one stage school) of southern Krytenia, maroon or navy tracksuits on and streamers in hand, running intricate patterns around before settling themselves in a circle. More (and slightly younger) dancers followed suit, wearing uniforms of red, white, green, blue, yellow or black; after similar pattern-forming, they ran in between the older dancers, forming the six-pointed Olympic Estoile whilst the older children arranged themselves a little further outside, in the approximate shape of the Ashton Olympic logo.

The dancers left the playing field (later to take their place in some reserved seating in the stadium), and were replaced by more people. Four groups, each carrying what looked (but did not weigh) like a big, tall, chunk of rock. They brought them together in the middle of the field, forming a mountain around twenty-five feet high. Another group of people – olive-skinned and clearly descended from the Ancient Mercians – entered at this point, wearing traditional leather and fur (OK, fake leather and fur) native costumes. As the background music changed to an almost hypnotic tribal drumming, they centred around one member of the group in particular, a young man, probably around fourteen or so, and pointed him at the mountain, which he began to “climb”. As he reached the summit, the lighting went haywire. Spotlights of yellow, orange, blue, green, white, violet; all swirled around the mountaintop and around the stadium...

And then it went dark.

When the lights came back on, the young man was flying (through the magic of theatrical wires) around fifty feet above the ground. He is encased in an orange light, and descends gradually back into the group. The mountain opens once again, revealing the ghostly image of a bear.

Opening sequences done with, it was time to welcome the athletes.

First came the delegation from Cafundéu; a late surprise for all, the organisers had decided to let the Cafundulense march out first in honour of their hosting of the previous Winter Olympics. Ad'ihan, Akbarabad, the debuting Albertasby and the Allamunnic States all followed, with Altimarus next in and flying their flag proudly on their first Olympic appearance.

The football-mad Krytenians, of course, couldn't keep from having their love for the game play some part in the proceedings; happily, it was in the form of a rousing cheer for the men and women of the Ariddian team. After the monks of The Archregimancy, and Azulcena's entry, came the team from The Babbage Islands, before another huge cheer erupted – the Ursines of Bears Armed have had a massive reception everywhere they've gone around here in the last few days, and this was no exception.

The march continued; Beldonia, Bergnovinaia, Cabric, the Capitalizt SLANI team, Carasatoga, Civil Citizenry, Cosumar, Cotdelapoms, D Land and Isles, and Delaclava all passed through. The large delegation from Dorian and Sonya was then followed, surreally, by the two athletes competing from Gruenberg; another small delegation, this time from first-timers Hakkland, followed on behind.

The march carried on through the teams of the Iglesian Archipelago, Inkarzikan, Izarius, Jasĭyun, Kagdazka and Pazhujebu, and Kelssek...at which point the next team came out to the odd sound of a half-swallowed cheer. A few members of the crowd, expecting Krytenia out next, were rather surprised when it was the flag of La Triesteza that entered the stadium; clearly they'd forgotten the hosts march last. The team from the Landau Institute followed behind, and the doctors and professors were themselves followed by Liventia, happy to compete as a separate team once again. Llama City One entered next, led by their own Emperor (who is also the flag-bearer and a competitor), before the smallest team of the Games made their appearance – a single competitor from the nation of Lurikastan. Lycrabon's delegation was somewhat larger, Maineiacs' larger still, whilst the charitable men and women of Mangolana were next to enter.

And on it went. Through Mantwenic, Meguroko, New Hayesalia, North Chicanan, and Phillippanoa. Through Qazox and the Quodites, the debuting Shofercia and old hands Sibirsky, the obscure Sorotineia and the well-known Sorthern Northland – shame bicycles and snow don't really mix – and Soviet Socialist Texas. The team from Spitfyred1 were probably glad of some media attention, with the “alpha couple” of the side having hogged the limelight in the past week, whilst the Taeshani team were probably just glad to be back in competition.

As the march continued, there came something of a vulpine sandwich; the nations of Vekaiyu and Vulshain, separated by the meaty filling of the large Virabi delegation. Western Cuba, minus a misregistered snowbarder were next, and Zwangzug in their traditional second-last position...

...and then the place erupted as the host nation's delegation joined the march in a sea of sky blue, navy, and white.

And so, to the final part of proceedings. With the athletes in situ, we next needed the flag. Members of the Rutian Constabulary brought in the Olympic Flag, hoisting it at quarter-mast from the first of two flagpoles as the Olympic Anthem (no, not the KBS one, or the VTV one, the actual one) was sung by members of the Ashton St James' Choir; this was then followed by the Krytenian flag and anthem, with the flag flown from a slightly shorter pole. The Olympic flag was then approached by alpine skier Chantelle Alcott, and figure skating judge Neil Hartley; both native Ashtonians, they took the Olympic Oaths before vacating the stage for the guests of honour, as the flag was raised to the top of the pole. It was then the turn of the NSOC President to welcome all and sundry to the Games, and for Tristan Octavius – King Tristan of Krytenia – to open the games.

And that left just one job to do. The torch entered the stadium, and the second-to-last bearer, curling captain John Ferris, did a lap of honour with it before climbing the stairs underneath the base of the cauldron and passing it to the man who would light the torch. And when the crowd saw who it was, there wasn't a dry eye or unsore throat in the house.

There, sat in a bright scarlet wheelchair, was Percy Matthews. Though unheard of on the international scene – he'd never played for his country – he had been the talismanic captain of the Ashton Bruins ice hockey team for some nine years before tragedy struck. Coming home from a training session, his motorcycle was hit by a furniture van, sending Matthews flying into the road. He suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, and a spinal injury; though he did regain consciousness after six weeks, he had become paralysed from the waist down, and his ice hockey career was over.

Not that he'd let it get to him, of course. He spent the next few years campaigning for various charities, as well as setting up a number of sledge hockey teams around the country. And his country had rewarded him with the accolade of lighting the Olympic flame. He lifted the torch high into the air, before lighting a “fuse” that sent the flame up to the roof of the stadium, lighting the cauldron.

Matthews beamed. Tristan nodded sagely. The crowd whooped.

The Games had begun.

Left-wing Utopia

"The Liberal Utopia of Maineiacs!"

Warren Kelleher marched into the stadium holding the pole upon which the Tie-dyed Flag flew. His faced beamed at the politely enthusiastic reception from the crowd. Most of the Maineiacs delegation was smiling and waving, but some still looked exhausted. Not everyone reacted well to the effects of the spacetime twister that made travel to different parts of the Multiverse possible. Some, like Warren, recovered fairly quickly, with only a momentary nausea washing over them. Others, like his wife and skating partner Sophia, could take hours, if not days to recover, while they suffered a more severe form of what they used to call jet lag. Warren sincerely hoped that Sophia could get back to normal quickly. They had reserved rink time tomorrow afternoon, and they needed to be in perfect form if they hoped to pick up the gold for the second time.

Harry Harper barely had his mind on the opening ceremony. His mind kept coming back to the accident he suffered last time he took the slopes at the Olympics. His leg broken in three places, the bone actually pushing through the flesh. The emergency airlift to a nearby hospital, which he scarcely remembered. Months of therapy while the doctors were unsure he'd ever walk unaided again, much less ski. He'd pushed himself, often against medical advice, to come to this day. The day he would begin his road to redemption.

The weight of responsibility was heavy on Jean-Claude L'avoie. The last time Maineiacs had competed at the Olympics, the hockey team had won the gold medal in a shootout. L'avoie was probably more surprised than anyone that he had made that last stop. But he had, and Maineiacs got the one gold they'd wanted more than any other. Nothing else but gold would do in the country's national sport, and nothing else would do this time but to repeat that performance. He was sincerely thankful that they had a bye on Day 1 of the competition.

Back in his dorm room, ski jumper Darrin Porter checked his equipment. He regretted that he couldn't attend the opening ceremony; from what he had seen from the vidscreen, it was quite the spectacle, but his olympics began tommorow. The team had unexpectedly won the gold medal in Jasi'yun, now they were expected to duplicate that accomplishment. It's one thing to sneak in under the radar, but quite another to perform in the spotlight of national attention with every other competitor gunning for you.

As Pandir Qadiche carried the flag into The Rutian Grounds; a tear streamed down her face. Not just for her, but for a nation that was finally going end it's long history of xenophobia, at least the human minority. The crystalline entities that made up over 70% of the population, refused or more likely ignored the request of Emperor Dacius Cabric to send a nominal delegate to march with the athletes. One could only wonder how a crystalline entity would interact with snow, seeing as both were crystalline forms. Unfortunately by not having one of the 'snowflakes'; as the human Cabrians nicknamed the native species of Cabric; they were stuck with the Emperor' twin sister Emily Cabric as the government's delegate. Nothing against the 2nd in-line-to-the-throne, but if the rumors were true, the Emperor sent her to Krytenia to prevent her from trying to steal the throne. But none of that mattered as she took pride in waving the flag.

<Back in Cabric:>

"And here is the Cabrican delegation! Headed by Figure Skating hopeful Pandir Qadiche! Also marching with the delegation is Emily Cabric, the Emperor's twin sister! Cabric is sending 22 athletes to compete at these 6th Winter Games in Ashton, Krytenia.."

Emperor Dacius Cabric turned off the television once he saw proof his sister was in Krytenia. How many times in just the past month had she rebelled against his authority. While she had so far done nothing overt towards him, Dacius felt that his sister was behind the murmurs of revolution that had come to his attention. But why? Just because he was born 3 minutes earlier than her, and beacuse of that fluke of chance, he was destined to become the 1st ruler of Cabric, while she was relegated to a spare part. But once he had an heir, she couldn't do anything to accend to the throne.

His parents, and ministers of state had brought countless women of marrying age, but none of them made his heart try to leap out of his chest. Granted many were very pretty, including the one from Falchon, who came before him wearing almost nothing but a smile; but none had held his interest. Too many of them were just plain stupid or boring or even ugly. Dacius decided to turn the TV back on, just to watch the procession of nations, when the Cabric TV camera showed a close up of the flag-bearer. At once his heart skipped a beat, and he settled back into his chair knowing that he had finally found the one.
