VI Winter Olympic Games - OOC Thread

Postby Krytenia » Tue Jan 11, 2011 8:34 pm

"Twenty years ago, the world held its breath as the first Winter Olympics began in the Paripanan city of Aeropag. Athletes from forty nations pushed the boundaries of winter sport, and a new era was born; the Olympic era. As the Olympic family has grown, so has the anticipation for each new event.

Four years ago, Sao Jorge hosted the fifth incarnation of this competition. Sixty-two nations took part, a testament to the growth in the Olympic family since those first baby steps, and when all was said and done, when medals had been won and personal achievements gained, the NSOC President called upon the youth of the world to gather here, in Ashton, Krytenia. It is with a sense of excitement and great joy that I now ask for that call to be answered.

I declare that registrations for the Sixth Winter Olympic Games are now open.
- Caroline Schumacher, KNOC Chairwoman

How to sign-up:
Copy and paste the list of events which is at the bottom of this post. Under each event name, just add the names of the athletes that you wish to participate in that event . Of course, if you don’t wish to have athletes participating in a specific event, just remove the event from your final list. The maximum number of competitors is specified in parentheses after each event, you can send less athletes than the number in parentheses, but not more.

When making your sign-up list, there are events that ask just for “teams” without specifying the number of athletes, as Hockey. On those, you need not write the names of the athletes in the sign-up list, just put the skill modifier of the team. There will be a roster thread in order to add the names of players of team sports and add any other IC information that you find useful, as the flag-bearer, anthem and other stuff that aren’t part of the sign-up process. For all other events, including those which involve teams with a specified number of athletes, you have to add names. You can also add your nation’s three letter code in your sign-up thread, but I’ll create one for you if you don't.

Please do not "tag" this thread or add a "provisional sign-up"; these posts will be ignored, even if you later edit in a ful signup. I also request that you do not edit your original signup once it is made, as changes are likely to be missed. Instead, let me know the changes in a new post, as I intend to update the signup list as I go along.

Entries and limits
The limit of entries for these Winter Olympics is of 200 entries. An entry consists of a team or individual participating in one event. An athlete who participates in 3 events will be counted as three entries, at the same way a full team participating in a single event is counted as one entry. Puppets nations are allowed, but with the limit of one, and please state its master nation. In addition, a master and puppet have a combined limit of 350 entries, with the limit of 200 entries still applying to each individual nation.

Skill modifiers
You can put the skill modifier of your athletes, by adding a number (it must be just after the name of your athlete or team, and preferably in parenthesis). The skill modifiers are from 0 to 1, from the lowest to highest. 0 probably means the athlete (or team) was called (or organized) without having any proper training or preparation, he maybe doesn’t even know the sport well! A 1 means that the player is part of an elite group of athletes for the event. So, you can input any number between 0 and 1 (but no more than two decimal numbers), as for example 0.6 or 0.45. Skill modifiers refer to a single entry, and not to a person or a sport. This means that a full Hockey team, for example, has a single skill modifier, at the same time that an athlete competing in multiple events can have one different modifier for each event.

But please note the following: the average of all the skill modifiers in your delegation cannot be more than 0.5, although it can be lower than it. Any list in which the average of skill modifiers end being higher than 0.5 will have its skill modifiers reduced until it meets the 0.5 limit. And, finally, entries without a skill modifier will have it set to a default modifier of 0.5.

Deadline and Schedule
Sign-ups are open in this thread until 23:59 GMT/UTC on February 4, 2011. Please post your delegations before this date. Sign-ups posted after this deadline probably won’t be accepted.

The RP thread will be created around one week before the end of sign-ups - that is to say, January 28 or thereabouts.

The Winter Games will start at the same time of the RL ones, from the February 11 to February 27, with one scorination per Day. (This is one week later than specified in the bid; apologies for this.) The official schedule will follow nearer the time.

Demonstration events
Demonstration events will be held if there are enough competitors. If you want to nominate one, follow these rules, which are a copy of CH’s ones of the Summer Olympics about demonstration events with small writing changes:

Why the sport must be considered a "winter sport". Please explain why this sport fits with the overall idea of the Winter Olympics, and wouldn't be considered a "summer sport".

A list of events within the sport. This may involve a split into men’s and women’s events, a series of distances, or whatever similar categorization is relevant to the sport. Some or all of these events may be consolidated if interest levels are not sufficient to sustain every possible event; you should specify if there are any events that are sufficiently dissimilar that their entrants cannot be funneled into a single event.

A set of results for the sport that can be used to set up the scorinator for it. If the sport is fictitious, either a set of fictitious results will be needed, or a statement that the results are similar enough to some other sport that the same scorination parameters can be used. If results differ for each event within the sport, this requirement must be satisfied for each event. Or, even better, an easily comprehensible and complete process for generating scores for the events.

A brief explanation of the competition format that should be used. This can take the form of a reference to a real-life competition (a link to information should be provided unless the format follows that of an Olympic event), or a detailed explanation if the sport requires some unique format.

The maximum number of individuals or teams that each nation can enter in each event, and, for team events, the size of the team (be reasonable in this one – preferably a max of 3 entries per event).

A list of all demonstration sports that have been adequately specified will be kept at the end of this post for convenience, though it may not always be updated. You can (and should) enter athletes in demonstration events at any time, regardless of whether the event has been officially noted or confirmed—the entries will simply be disregarded if the event is not held. In principle, demonstration events adequately specified will be held if at least six nations have entered, and will not count towards your maximum entries.

Example signup
Of course, you don’t need to post exactly this way, but this is a good example:

ALPINE SKIING
Men’s Downhill
Mason Gates (1)
Arthur Tych (0.35)
Fred Binden (0.9)

Women’s Downhill
Laura Winters (0.85)
Tamara Eisenegger (0)

ICE HOCKEY
Men’s Team (0.7)
Women’s Team (0.7)

LUGE
Men’s Singles
Gavin Burr (0.22)
Charlie Blainz (0.3)
Owen Ison (0.1)

Women’s Singles
Jacqueline Frost (0.52)
Colleen Coe (0.4)
Samantha Kimo (0)

Doubles
Armando Rodriguez / Sam Dennis (0.86)
Carlos Perez / Alex Duxbury (0.4)

NORDIC COMBINED
Men’s team
Norman Hill, Brian Athlone, Harry Bone, Leon Vorwart (1)

Women’s team
Hayley Liiping, Courtney Cross, Terri Marx and Laura Snow (0.2)

In this example you can notice the basic rules: each line in it represents one entry, as it represents one participant person or team in an event. Skill modifiers are the numbers in parenthesis after the names, and the average of all these entries is 0.5.

Notice also that in Hockey the names of the players aren’t specified, as these are input in the roster thread. But, at the same time, the names of the Nordic Combined teams are. This is because the Hockey events don’t specify a number of athletes per team, while Nordic Combined does.

The list of events follows the official list of the Fifth Winter Olympic Games, held in Sao Jorge, Cafundéu.

Scorination:

The Olympic Games are scorinated, at least in this case, with a program made by Commerce Heights, which was used in the most recent games too. The results are random, being influenced only by the skill modifiers and the RP bonus, awarded to the teams that RP in the RP thread, which will be open later. The Olympics also have a discussion thread for... discussion, although any doubts about the sign-up process can be posted here, and I'll answer them as soon as I can.

New Hayesalia will apply for the nations first Olympic events. As a tropical nation, we have little to offer, but we will still put some teams forwards. The only alpine part of New Hayesalia is the sometimes frosty Amuap Ranges, but we know we can come home with medals.
