Alpine Skiing World Cup discussion thread

Postby Kelssek » Thu Dec 09, 2010 2:49 pm

Right, so I'm interested in running this in the new year. It'll be based on the FIS World Cup, and scorinated with xkoranate. Similarly to the motorsport-type events, I'll solicit submissions of mountains to hold events at and come up with a schedule, with scorination being done every week or so.

My idea is for each nation entering a contingent of skiiers (maybe a limit of 20) who can be assigned to take part in each of the disciplines (downhill, super-G, giant slalom, and slalom) with skiiers having a set amount of skill to be distributed among the disciplines (so as to discourage the unrealistic prospect of someone being a specialist both at downhill and slalom). I'd welcome ideas on how best to implement this, however.

This is very much still at the hazy idea stage, so discuss away.

I have a Mytanar Skiing Championship, which could be used as part of this. I could also host a few events if someone gives me some good directions on how to use xkoranate.

If you've got a link so I can have a look at how you ran it, that would be helpful.

For now I'm leaning towards each skiier being given points which can be assigned to either speed or technical skills, plus one "specialty" discipline they are best at.

Bollocks. I was going to try one of these in the New Year. Thou hast stolen my thunder.

So, well, yes, our delegation would no doubt be very interested. As to a ranking system, you could require that:
- the delegation's entries average 0.5 skill points
- any individual skier entered into more than 1 event average 0.5 skill points (thus people could still enter highly ranked specialists in a single event - most likely slalom or downhill - but also have some)

That said, I wouldn't particularly support such restrictions on individual skiers: it is not unknown for skiers to be competitive in all four/five disciplines, and several RL skiers have won multiple titles in both downhill and slalom (and other disciplines) at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup (most notably Bode Miller, who has won at least 5 races in each discipline). Wikipedia has a list of such versatile athletes.

To which end, a simple "gentleperson's agreement" that entries containing multiple skiers ranked highly in every discipline will be frowned upon could be all that's needed.

It's not unheard of, yes, but skiiers as versatile as Bode Miller are an exception (and he's also an aspiring tennis pro, one might add). I'm ambivalent on whether to do it Olympic-style with a delegation-wide skill limit, or to do it on an individual basis, or perhaps some kind of weird mixture on both. Will have to sleep on that.

I think this would be an excellent idea, espeicially so nations could RP about how their skiiers did at the world cup at the Olympics.

Question, would winning the world cup factor into scorination bonus of Olympics at all...?

No, it will not and should not. And neither should World Cup KPB ranking, World Cup of Hockey ranks, etc. factor in.

Ok... sounds good. I still this is an excellebt idea and more things like this should be created (i.e. gymnastics competitions, horse riding competitions, etc.)

I think I'd probably send a couple of skiiers. With the inaugural Winter Paralympics set to start next week I've got the appetite for winter sports at the moment and this would be a good outlet to get some more sports RP going; I've stagnated in that regard for a while.

Well you see - I hadn't quite started it.. So similarly to QoD - you stole my thunder too! But I was working out the format over the past few days - until you posted this..so I'm not sure.

In response to Akbarabad: No. As I have already said, other events have no bearing on this event, and neither will this event necessarily have any bearing on other events.
