Back to Square One
Cap Nordique, Cotdelapoms

The Predateurs defence was in shambles during the thrashing against fellow strugglers Elisabetano, and then the narrow loss to the in-form Pomhommes. Their previously strongest component of the team, who have conceded just the same amount as third-placed Rushmoreens, looked completely lost against Elisabetano, who the Predateurs were hoping to get a result against. Nekrasov looked like he wasn't really there on the day, making several uncharacteristic errors and being replaced early on by van der Knappen. Oscar Cino looked rather dead as well, being replaced by Nguyen, but the offense wasn't much better, Nevil in particular lacking creativity and failing to service Kai Upat. Their performance against the Pomhommes was more promising, but still didn't gain any points for the Predateurs, whose goalkeeping problems were made apparent with several howlers. Deasy, from the Kiaser Colonies, has shown flashes of good form this season, but his overall inconsistency which was highlighted against the Pomhommes proves to be a major problem. Di Bianci has been no better from the bench, being consistent, but consistently mediocre and not good enough to start for a Superligue side.

The Predateurs will look to improve their results as the season continues, but their squad, despite it's bright points, may need some serious strengthening in the off-season if they have ambitions of becoming a top side.

Nikita Ulvaeus hadn't expected it to be this, well, difficult.

He'd been the star of the show when he was a player at GKGK. They'd been the darlings of the league, winning championship after championship. The season after he left, they started losing again, and people pointed towards his absence as a reason why. He was held aloft as the raison d'être of Polarian handball, and when it was revealed he would be taking up the position of assistant coach at Cap Nordique Guillemots, well, sales of the shirts skyrocketed in the Federation. The league was quite an exciting venture, and all through the handball clubs of the north the question "so who's your Cotdelapomais club, then?" was getting steadily more unpopular, rendered obsolete by the wearing of the team kits to practises and other matches.

And things had got off to a great start. Two wins from two, and the Guillemots were flying high. But then, in the past four weeks, something happened that Ulvaeus hadn't been able to get a hold on. Four straight defeats. Narrow defeats, but defeats nonetheless. They were scoring plenty, and the defence wasn't that bad. But the confidence wasn't there. Losing by the odd goal is painful, and seeing your goal difference sitting at only -1 when you've lost twice as many games as you've won is a constant reminder of just what you're capable of.

He looked down the team list, and down the fixture list. Vojta Sjukowski. The guy had potential, for sure. He was one of the best pivots in the league, possibly the world. And at his age, he could go on to be a world-beater, no doubt about it. The Guillemots were lucky to have him so young in his career.

And yet he wasn't all there yet. There was a missing piece to this puzzle. He needed to work it out, and work it out fast.

In time for the derby against the Predateurs, preferably. Struggling as much as the Guillemots had been in recent weeks, they'd be out to provide a victory over their cross-town rivals just as much as the Guillemots were. To give the fans something to cheer about.

Nikita Ulvaeus sighed, and leant back in his leather chair. He popped in another video of Sjukowski highlights, turned down the brightness on his laptop, and poured himself another coffee from the hotplate. Just what was it that Sjokowski was lacking in?

This was going to be a long night.

DUMAS CUP QUARTER FINALS
Montréal Royals 1–1 Montréal Cotdelapomais (2–1 OT)
Montréal Royals 3–5 Montréal Cotdelapomais
Montréal Cotdelapomais 2–4 Montréal Royals
Montréal Cotdelapomais 0–1 Montréal Royals
Montréal Royals 4–6 Montréal Cotdelapomais
Montréal Cotdelapomais 2–2 Montréal Royals (2–3 OT)
Montréal Royals win 4-2

The biggest rivalry in Cotdelapomais sport got to add a few more pages to it's lengthy story with yet another first round matchup between les Citoyens and the Royals, who were the regular season champions. Game 1 went into overtime, with Pryzemyzr Tujenhev of the Royals scoring the game winner after 17 minutes with a wicked point slapshot that beat Pascal Sévigny. Game 2 was a shootout, with les Citoyens winning 5-3 and even earning an unironic "allez citoyens, allez!" around the Alex Rideau Auditorium, which certainly had to annoy the local Royal fans. Les Citoyens won game 2 with a balanced attack and five separate goalscorers, including two power play goals.

The Royals' penalty kill continued to be an issue, giving up another goal in game 3, but the Royals were able to prevail 4-2 and take a 2-1 lead in the series. The Royals took both of the first two games at Centre Télépom Mobilité, winning a close 1-0 game in game 4 on an early Radoslav Invermuir goal. Whilst the first three games were hard hitting, the fourth was the first time there was fighting in the series, and it seemed like the tide may have finally turned in favour of the Royals, as Citoyens hard-man Georges LaRoche lost two fights to seemingly less "tough" opponents, which may have mentally set the Royals up to win the series- certainly Centre Télépom Mobilité had never been quieter in a playoff game than when LaRoche was dropped by Andrew Barnet.

Les Citoyens had one last stand in game five, winning 6-4, and were able to go back home with their backs against the walls, hoping to defend their home ice and force a game seven. Once again the brawls were back, and LaRoche and Barnet went once again, the fight being a lot closer this time, but LaRoche still lost, representing his third lost fight of the season and, according to hockeyfights.cdp, only the fifth lost fight of his career. Rezzi Tzar'kr'El got a bit of vengeance on his teammate with a MAMMOTH open-ice hit on Maxime O'Bagels that took O'Bagels out for 15 minutes and allowed les Citoyens to take a 2-1 lead, but the Royals scored late in the 3rd period with a nice redirect by Alek Auclair, and then just 4 minutes into overtime the storybook was complete with who else but Maxime O'Bagels scoring an overtime series winner to silence Centre Télépom Mobilité. Les Citoyens may be the Champions League champions, but they won't be winning the Dumas Cup this year.

All the analysts and television personalities were talking about how this was going to be a fantastic series, and they were proven to be right, with so much to talk about in the office after each matchup. Game 1 was like a video game or a heavyweight title fight, with two of the best players in the world each scoring two goals, but it was Benoît Cohen, not Jean-Luc Barr getting the last laugh, as the Caribou emerged the winners. Game 2 was a tense affair that featured a line brawl in the second period started by Tigers pest Maxime Jean-Baptiste goading Andrus Alexopopoulos into slashing him, and the Tigers rushing to Jean-Baptiste's aide, as the Tigers pest winked at Andrus. This led to a tussle that ended with the 4 Caribou and 2 Tigers in the box...and Roch Cormier scoring the only goal of the game just 20 seconds into the power play. The Tigers then took game 3 in a blowout, winning 5-2 on another two goal game from Jean-Luc Barr. Whilst the Caribou won a hard fought game four, Rouen never seemed quite into it after that and the defending champions did exactly what everyone thought they would and took a big bite out of Rouen.

Portsmouth Mallards 3–2 Albionpool Oak Leafs
Portsmouth Mallards 2–3 Albionpool Oak Leafs
Albionpool Oak Leafs 1–0 Portsmouth Mallards
Portsmouth Mallards 1–3 Albionpool Oak Leafs
Albionpool Oak Leafs win 4-2

The plucky Mallards absolutely exploded in game two of this series to head back to Portsmouth on a positive note, and won game 3 to take a series lead. All felt good on the west coast, but after the Leafs grinded out a game four win to head back home with a tied series it was all Albionpool. Rick Jones' game 5 winner with just a minute and a half left seemed to put a dagger in the heart of the Mallards, who went back home for game 6 deflated and not able to keep up with the Leafs, who advanced to the semi-finals.

Baltimore Gulls 2–1 Sorel Pomhommes
Sorel Pomhommes 1–1 Baltimore Gulls (1-2 OT)
Sorel Pomhommes 1–1 Baltimore Gulls (1–2 OT)
Baltimore Gulls win 4-0

Hard luck for lucky ducks Sorel, who managed to stun the hockey world by making the playoffs, and then play well enough to force overtime twice and never lose by more than one goal- and yet they got swept by the similarly surprising Baltimore Gulls. Markos de Raek was on fire, conceding just 5 goals on an absurd 151 shots, and Pierre Belcambre had a good series, scoring the series winner, and also the game 2 winner. Rough luck for Sorel, who may not be back to the playoffs any time soon.

Dumas Cup Semi-Finals
1Montréal Royals vs. 7Hamilton Tigers
3Albionpool Oak Leafs vs. 4 Baltimore Gulls

Two great semi finals matchups- the Royals and Tigers get a rematch of le guerre d'hiver and the Dumas Cup finals from two seasons ago, and the Royals can definitely feel like they earned the championship if they can win it, getting through their hated rivals and their new made for tv rivals. Maxime O'Bagels vs. Jean-Luc Barr- the TV networks must be salivating. Meanwhile, the historic Oak Leafs are still in the tournament themselves and are beloved in certain parts of the country, but will be hated in Baltimore, the surprise team of the playoffs. The Gulls have the CHL's hot goalie in Markos de Raek, the Oak Leafs have the CHL's oldest regular goalie in Maxime Deslauriers, who has announced he will be retiring after the season. The Oak Leafs have the biggest payroll in the CHL, the Gulls have the 4th smallest.

Pomhommes Struggling At The Gate
Superligue's TV Numbers Strong

When the Outremont Kodiaks were in town for round 8 of the Superligue, only 5183 people came out to Centre Télépom Mobilité, the smallest crowd of the current Superligue season. In fact, attendance has steadily dropped at each Pomhommes home match, a worrying proposition since the derby match with the Sasanachs is their next home date. You'd think, then, that this would be a worrying sign for the Pomhommes and the league as a whole- this may not be the case, however.

It was clear from the start that Superligue would be a built for TV league- and with Sport+'s backing. Initial objectives for the league were to draw about 750,000 viewers on average, and thusfar they've done about that. This puts Superligue above basketball already and within striking distance of LBÉC baseball, which is the current "hot" sport on television. This is frankly, a pretty good result for a sport that's largely new to the public with stars that are largely new to the public with teams with no established history- these are the sorts of numbers rugby union used to draw before the league collapsed due as much to the troubles in Mytannion as anything else.

That is the rub, though. There is no real reason to be passionate about any one team yet- there's no long standing roots, and with every match on TV you can learn more about the players and pick favourites on that level rather than on a club level. Indeed, the league is actively TRYING to push individual players, and it's working to an extent- Vojta Zjukovski is suddenly a marketable face in Polarian neighbourhoods, Elmo Baggio is a marketable name in Saugeais neighbourhoods, Cafundelense-Cotdelapomais seem to be very fond of Hugo Robles, et cetera. Cafundelense-Cotdelapomais people living in Montréal have no reason to go see either of the local teams, they can watch Elisabetano on TV. It seems like the league is fine with this, but may want to start encouraging clubs to sell some cheap tickets to get the fans in the door, since good crowds make for good television.

The Pomhommes have a golden opportunity to lure people to the gate with the big derby match with the Sasanachs coming- this sort of match plays well into the hands of the above issue. The Pomhommes are a fairly franco-friendly team, whereas the Sasanachs have a heavy Sorthern influence. Sorthern Montréalais hero Maxime O'Bagels has been a vocal supporter of the Sasanachs thusfar this season, the Pomhommes may need to try to get Julien Champagne or Jean Bédard to do a little bit of press work for them. Really stoke those divisive nationalistic flames in order to sell tickets!

DUMAS CUP SEMI-FINALS
Montréal Royals 3–2 Hamilton Tigers
Montréal Royals 2–3 Hamilton Tigers
Hamilton Tigers 3–3 Montréal Royals (4-3 OT)
Hamilton Tigers 1–1 Montréal Royals (2–1 OT)
Montréal Royals 0–1 Hamilton Tigers
Hamilton Tigers win 4-1

We thought this would be a heavyweight title fight, but this was more like the light heavyweight champion going up a weight class to fight the heavyweight champion. They're good, and they can keep it close, but in the end it's not a fair fight. Optimism was all over the Royal half of Montréal- it just felt like this would be the year. It's now been 50 years since the Royals were Dumas Cup champions, and after Maxime O'Bagels took over game one and THOROUGHLY outplayed the Tigers almost singlehandedly, it felt...special. The city is always bustling, and always passionate about hockey, but so rarely is it passionate and bustling about the Royals.

Then came game two, and the Royals lost at home- always a troublesome sign. It was a close, tough, fight, but Einar Bergsson scored a game winner in the third period and set the Royals back. It was a best of five now, Royals fans said. Even series, they've still got a shot...

Then the series headed to Barsteeg Arena, and came game three, a stone cold classic. The Tigers and Royals alternated goals- Barr scored for the Tigers, Lajeunesse for the Royals, Bergsson for the Tigers, Gomez for the Royals, Barr again for the Tigers, O'Bagels for the Royals, and after regulation it was all locked up. Each team had their chances in the playoffs, with Shu making a pair of huge pads save on Leandre Désilets and then Pierre Renault poke checking the puck away from a streaking Luc Dionne. The first overtime ended scoreless. Everyone looked exhausted come overtime number two, and once it ended they looked even more exhausted. Having played 100 minutes of hockey, the two goliaths didn't seem to want to quit- but the third overtime was done after a minute and ten seconds, when Tigers d-man Louis Fortin let loose a slapper that beat Shu up high to win the game and put the Tigers up 2-1.

Game four went to overtime as well, as the two teams seemed tired and beaten down, but there is no quit in the Hamilton Tigers, and Leif Proulx scored the winner to that one with just seconds left in the overtime. Suddenly, having lost three straight heading back to Alex Rideau Auditorium, and essentially having played an extra game in overtimes, the Royals didn't seem so optimistic, and they played as such. Game 5 wasn't the beautiful, precise passing, stick handling Royals team we are used to, but rather a team that decided it was more interested in brutal hits and dump and chase. Shu, forever dogged for being a playoff choker, put in a gritty effort that just wasn't good enough...letting a Roch Cormier slap shot trickle through his legs and into the back of the net for the only goal of the game. The Royal optimism was done for another year, and the handshake line may have been the roughest one ever.

The strong regular season netminding of Markos de Raek wasn't quite there in this series with the Oak Leafs, with the capital club putting up four goals on the Polarian three times, in games one, two and four. The surprise Gulls had already punched their ticket to the Champions League, but wanted to make a series of it and was able to take a bit of momentum back in their first home game by beating the Oak Leafs 3-2 and winning all the board battles. The Oak Leafs took it back in game four, though- and aside from a hiccup in game five at Oak Air Centre in overtime, the Leafs looked like a team of destiny in their own right- 40 years in the making.

DUMAS CUP FINALS
3Albionpool Oak Leafs vs. 7 Hamilton Tigers

So for the second straight year it's the Oak Leafs and their 40+ year Cup drought and the Tigers, the two time defending champions. Last year we thought it would be the final chance for the Oak Leafs, but now with Rick Jones they seem to be the perfect team. Hockey fans in the capital are going crazy, knowing they may not have another chance for years to be Cup champions. Meanwhile, Tiger fans, between getting drunk, being rude to out of towners and being surprisingly fashionable, are also busy bragging about the new Tiger dynasty that immediately followed the previous Citoyen dynasty. Citoyens fans must be in hell knowing that either they are about to be totally upstaged by the Tigers as the best team of recent years, or that one of their two sworn enemies with lengthy cup droughts will no longer have a cup drought. Choice is yours!

Fresh off making the CHL semi-finals and thus earning their way into the Champions League, the Baltimore Gulls have undergone a rebranding beginning next season. The new logos are being painted all around the Oceanfront Arena, and the new sweaters are already available at www.baltimoregulls.cdp, along with t-shirts, caps and other paraphernalia.

DUMAS CUP FINALS
Albionpool Oak Leafs 1–1 Hamilton Tigers (1–2 OT)

What a doozy to begin with, game 1 began with both teams full of energy but looking jittery and nervous, making un-Leaf/Tiger-like errors in the first period. Ishida Arnook scored off an early breakaway that was the result of a foolish Louis Fortin giveaway to put the Oak Leafs up 1-0. The Tigers came back in the second with Jean-Luc Barr (who else?) scoring after jamming the puck past Maxime Deslauriers. Regulation ended with the Oak Leafs in control of the pace and feeling good going into the extra period, but it was not to be when Leif Proulx scored just 3 minutes into the overtime from a one-timer fed by Einar Bergsson.

Albionpool Oak Leafs 2–3 Hamilton Tigers

...and fear makes it's way into the hearts of Oak Leaf fans. The naysayers all begin to talk about how they've been there before- it's been 40 years since the Leafs last won the Dumas Cup, and the Tigers have won the last two. How foolish to think that this would be the year? The big recent acquisitions came up huge in this game- Rick Jones scored a goal and despite giving up 3, Maxime Deslauriers still made 40 saves. The Leaf defencemen were simply not at their best, not blocking shots, they just looked tired. Meanwhile, the Tigers spread the love around, with goals from Jean-Luc Barr, Maxime Jean-Baptiste and a slap shot from the point by Daniel Mathieu.

Hamilton Tigers 2–1 Albionpool Oak Leafs

So the series returned to Hamilton, and after a hard fight, the Oak Leafs were just hoping to win one Hamilton, force a return to the Oak Air Centre and avoid a sweep. Once again, the Leafs got on the board first, this time it was the ageless Louis Saint-Laurent, but once again the team fell apart, giving up easy chances that a world-class team like the Tigers will always take advantage of. Jean-Luc Barr and Leif Proulx scored just 47 seconds apart in the second period to put the victory away and be just one game away from a sweep and a celebration on home ice.

Hamilton Tigers 4–0 Albionpool Oak Leafs

So long, Oak Leafs. Jean-Luc Barr is the best player in the world, and showed it in this series, and these playoffs to earn the Playoff MVP award and be handed the Dumas Cup for the third straight season.

US Charlevoix Montagnards Update

Eight matches, eight wins. Fueled by Renatinho's team-leading scoring, Tom Sinclair's understated leadership, and Consuelo Lucio's highlight-reel athleticism, life would seem to be going easy for the SuperLigue side from US Charlevoix. The gate has been good. Manager Carmela Vizcaino's smile is all over the networks. And several players are attracting broader followings thanks to television and the multiethnic Cotdelapoms socirty.

Yet Les Montagnards are still nervous. Montréal Pomhommes tenaciously cling to the second spot, with their only loss being to Charlevoix several rounds back. Both sides have established a substantial gap over the rest of the field. And owner Marko Kivi is known to be mildly disappointed at the failure of the league thus far to gather an audience in Baltskandio. Nervous owners, for any reason, make for unsettled clubhouses.

But a winning streak like this one still makes for a good time to be a fan. This writer, for one, is settling in for a good run--even after the streak ends.

The Kingston Crown-Gazette
Splitting hairs
The Griffins take it two games at a time

Just over halfway through the first Superligue season, and the Kingston Griffins are still the epitome of mediocrity; they have split every pair of matches. "I...suppose competitive balance is good," manager Timmy Rappoport admits, "but I hadn't expected this." After twelve games, the Griffins have outscored their opponents by just four points, cumulative. That said, there are two teams who have cut it even closer by that metric; the Montréal Sasanachs and the Cap Nordique Guillemots.

"With all the accent marks and suchlike floating around," the manager confesses when we mention the latter, "I kind of thought they'd gone ahead and built a team of Guillemets."

Finn Mullaney, the young right-back, currently leads the team with 53 goals, with fellow backs Grímur Steingrímsson and Iago Barbeiro contributing plenty as well. The Griffins' six win, six loss record leaves them in contention for a playoff spot, though with six points separating third and eleventh, it's a bit early to make predictions.

A quick glimpse at the top of the table notes that US Charlevoix have been putting on a dominant show; they're eleven and one, with the best attack and best defense of all sides in the league. As was noted before, the Montagnards are also reliant on young players such as captain Consuelo Lucio and pivot Amadeus Strand. There's nothing to say that young players can't make an impact right away, but Rappoport is content to wait it out.

"Ultimately I think there's going to be a lot we'll be measured by. The attendance--Kingston are the smallest city with a Superligue team, I think it's important to show that there's fan support there. Financial stability, you can name any number of things, and as manager that's not my immediate priority to deal with. But it's a tough thing to balance."

But if their record is anything to go by, the Griffins are no strangers to balance.

It had been a relentlessly grey day in Sayercooan. The weather hadn't been particularly awful, but the rain and the wind had been steady enough that people would either stay completely in, or pay attention to nothing other than getting to their destination as quickly as possible if they did go out. For some, for most even, that proved to make for a miserable day. For others however it had made for perfect conditions.

Malachy MacKenna was sort of in both of those positions. The weather he was unable to stand, but at least it let him go about his business in peace. As a chief inspector in the local police force there was no way he could be known to be associating with the people he was in a the basement of a derelict building down a dingy alleyway five minutes walk away from the port. He wasn't the only one looking for secrecy. Among the gathering were corrupt politicians, corrupt businessmen, corrupt officials. About the only people there not considered corrupt were those representing Sayercooan's criminal underworld. The drug lords, the gang bosses and so on, essentially those who were openly criminal.

The purpose of the meeting was something that would remain known only to those in attendance. Why Sayercooan had such as underworld however was a far more open secret. Renowned for it's port, it also goes by the name of Freeport, the town is a popular destination for those looking to smuggle illicit goods into not only Ancharmunn, but also Tyneala and beyond that the continent of Vatmark. Another advantage was that being in the far south of Ancharmunn, located towards the tip of a panhandle areas that were recognised as not being under the control of any nation were easily accessible to both the east and south. If one felt the need to escape from the long arm of the law and a marine escape westwards wasn't an option, an escape to the so called badlands remained on the cards.

Chief Inspector MacKenna was in exactly the sort of position where he should have been preventing such things from happening. He could easily have done so, however a malleable concscience meant that much would pass him by. A blind eye would be turned and those who could have been caught would remain on the run. Of course, that's exactly the type of thing his associates in that meeting were after. Their rivals however weren't so keen, and now they would do something about that.

Emerging into the rain sodden alleyway MacKenna checked both ways. No one around. Perfect. He could simply walk back to the road and within a few minutes would be blended in with normality. No one who might find where he'd spent his morning would never find out. Or so he thought.

Having walked a couple of minutes in the direction of the car-park where he'd left his car came the first sign of any other life since he'd left the basement of his secretive rendezvous. A motorbike was heading towards him at a speed that wouldn’t particularly gain any attention. In fact other than a passenger riding pillion there was nothing particularly notable about it. MacKenna took little notice as it closed in towards his direction.

The passenger however was taking notice of him. Very close notice. Once the bike was within close range of MacKenna the passenger having set his sights with a handheld pistol fired two quick shots before the motorbike sped away from the scene. In all probability the motorbike was headed out of the country either south or east into those unclaimed, uncontrolled lands. MacKenna was headed nowhere, and in this weather it'd be sometime before anyone would venture out to find his sodden body and the pool of rain diluted blood around him.

For such a murder the conditions had proven to be perfect.
I'm not on the Greenwich Meridian so my time is a few seconds behind. Bear that in mind.

Season Preview

It's a time of great change for the Potazzi Série A, as the league transitions from it's temporary perch as one of the bigger leagues in the world back to it's likely perpetual home- a league where good players go to retire and get paid, and a league where much of the best Cotdelapomais talent goes to try to get sold off to bigger teams elsewhere. It's also the first season of the current format- a return to sixteen teams competing, and a new addition- playoffs!

There has been some debate about playoffs for years now, but it seems as though Série A wants to be more like the CHL and create some made-for-TV intensity and put together a playoff that will lead to a neutral arena Série A championship game. This season, eight teams will make the playoff, which is a number that has led to a fair number of complaints- that's exactly half the league, they say! The higher seeds will have a big advantage in the playoff, as the higher seeded team will have home field for each match until the final, and each playoff match will be one leg. The winner of the Série A playoffs will be guaranteed a spot in the Globe Cup, and a spot in the Rushmore Champions League. Should the Série A playoff winner also win the regular season, they will instead play in the TQCC.

To read more about the league in general, click here. To learn about the coming season- read on!

Title Contenders

With a seemingly perfect midfield (featuring "the best player in Cotdelapoms" Ismaël Yarrez, Alexandre Letendre-Arcx'Vrez'tch, Felicio Proença, Joë Parenteau, Hachiro Tsukino and new Polarian youth signing Mikko Gulseth all vying for time), and the return of Aguazuleño defender Garcilasco Criville, Sparta are the obvious favourites this season. It will be a farewell for Mytanar club legend Imre Ulsson, and a likely coming out party for Hachiro Tsukino, who is expected to move on to a bigger league after the season. If João Desjardins scores enough goals there's no reason to think he won't be first choice come the World Cup.

After the strike, it was hard watching Série A without the global stars, but Tout-Puissant Outremont were the first ones to bring them back. Are you surprised? Rafael Luis Robledo returns, and the club has brought in PBI all time legends Alexandre Dalomax and Florent-Roparzh Le Tallec. Kristján Dagenais can prove he is the real deal up front this season if he can score some goals.

In the last 10 years, it's rarely been a smart idea to bet against Montréal, now managed by club legend Zlatko Zedafski, who has the team playing a more attacking style than ever before. New goalkeeper signing Loukas Gratton from Baltimore is one of the best in the country, and the defence is not so bad in front of him with the likes of Alexandre Grainger, Conor Riordan, Dermot O'Brien and new signing Thomas Quentin. The midfield is now firmly the area of Jean Bédard and Laurent Parizeau on opposite flanks with Zeruko Zarranz in the middle, as Zedafski seems to like to play with three forwards- most commonly this season Rodrigo, James Hunt and Danilinho, but we've seen him deploy Kaël Hansson up there too.

With all their money, Cosmopolitan always have a puncher's chance. This year's team will almost certainly be the last with Maxime Lucas between the sticks, so they may be in the market for a new goalkeeper- it's a surprise they didn't pick up one of the many foreign keepers who showed up this year, but apparently they want to wait until the last minute. Saugeais star Dietmar Öztürk will be called upon to bring the goals this season, and Elvis Andropolis will finally after 10 years in Série A be given a starring role.

International Contenders

The media seem to love Étoile Rouge right now because they've assembled one of the deepest squads in the league- talented players like Giannis Spyopoulos, Jefferson Acuña and Luc-Antoine Belec are not guaranteed places in the squad every week. They should, however, love them because Yoann X'Arc'Tx is finally the star he teased us as being, and Paulistinha seems to have found new life in his old legs.

Of course, their perpetual coastal rivals Maritime are also a team on the up and up, especially with the savvy signing of goalkeeper Yannick Latendresse, along with the returning Eualdo Nkong and Falconfar defender Jack Qaiso. Much of their success will come down to whether or not they can score goals- Lucas Ribeiro is an old man who is more an emotional leader than a leader on the pitch- often the first man subbed off and getting plenty of matches off anyway. Lucas Bourassa and Mathieu Coutu will have to pick up the slack.

Jackson Diawara will score goals, but they are maybe not the most defensively sound team. Who would have ever thought a few years ago that this would describe Worcester Hearts? Yes, the karela heros are looking more and more an offensive club, relying strongly now on Diawara and Pierre-Alexandre Séguin, and much less on the ageing Rodrigue M'Benga. Romain Frederiksson is still a top class keeper, but the back line is shaky.

With the Pocoan royalty seemingly taking a more hands off approach, Saint-Urbain are in an interesting place. Their big offseason arrivals were Róbson and Benedikt Klum, and it seems as though they are strong enough to compete for top spots, but there seems to be no team spirit at this squad. Perhaps a change in manager is in order?

Supplanting Sparta as the foremost Cotdelapomais factory for strong young talent, Baltimore are always contenders in the best case scenario. This year's team has a hot young keeper in Bastien Trottier, a good attacking midfielder in Youri Pellerin and a striker named Cedrik Blackburn who is a potential Apple.

Mid-Table Sides

The constantly changing squad for Celtic this year is highlit by midfielder Guillaume Reboulet, young striker Yani Mercier and brutal central defender Henrik Turgeon. Nobody expects much from the gwenn ha du, but they won't go down.

A year or two from now, we will expect something different from Cap Nordique, we all think striker Nickolas Malenfant will be a star in the future, and either he will be great or he will be sold for the money it will take to upgrade every player. The midfield is full of Montréal rejects- it features Alexandre Faille, Stefano Della Citta and Thiago.

Charlevoix, usually a bottom feeder, have done a great job of putting together a squad full of solid Série A players, they may not be likely to make it to international competition, but relegation would be a huge shock. The midfield should be pretty solid, young Julien Tousignant and the Djocorangan pair of Ali Anikulapo-Kuti and Olivier Maalouf should solidify the squad.

Dominion are here because they have a lot of good players, but they are almost all quite old. Rikpa, Kolke Venningberg, Jérémy Berthiaume, Vittorio Testo- all great players, none of whom are going to still be playing two years from now.

Look Out Below!

There's little reason for optimism for fans of Hochelaga, except perhaps that they have three solid Série A calibre goalkeepers, so when Cosmopolitan need one they could get some cash.

Mehdi has come a long way from being a rotten apple on the old Sainte-Catherine teams, and is now one of the better players in the league, but he is about it for Saint-Richard. They will live and die with striker Mika Brisebois, who can score goals when given the opportunities.

Sainte-Catherine will keep having excellent kits. The less said about the team the better.

THE ELISABETHAN MESSENGER
online version, read it on your tablet!
and, even better, it's free!

ATLÉTICO TRANSFORMS ITSELF THANKS TO CAMPAIGN FOR MOTIVATION

The club supported by the giant group of Cafundelense companies AUGECC, with its yellow-white or black-orange shirt, showing the influence of the Atlantian Oceania nation in the squad, had so far two very different moments in the Handball league, but no one could really point out what made the team's performance change so strongly in such a little time. After the first four matches, Atlético had only one win, and struggled even to be a challenge for better opponents. After six matches, the situation was still a bad one, with two wins and four losses... but after this point the team finally started bringing positive results back to Île d'Elisabeth. Perhaps the opponents at that point already imagined Atlético as an easy opponent, and were caught by surprise unable to fix their mistake. But the point is that, since that stage, Elisabetano only lost a single game, and is now on second place of the standings with nine wins. Thanks to the bad start, this position still isn't a very secure one, and new losses can send the team down... the path to the first position is one almost impossible to reach, since US Charlevoix is well in front.

But there is a very special reason behind this change in performance. One of Atlético Elisabetano's directors, who didn't want to have his name revealed to the press, showed us the truth: "The players didn't seem very motivated for the matches... most came from different countries and were still getting used to the new team mates, new playing style and especially the new city. Trainings were difficult due to the language barrier and personality differences... the coach then introduced a new group activity: outings for the most popular bars and nightclubs of Île d'Elisabeth. This way, the players would spend some time together, getting adapted to the new country and happier for the trainings... and really motivated for the matches. More than this, in the last days reserved for this activity, some of the people from the city are recognizing the players and praising them, which is a plus that we weren't expecting at the beginning."

Kingston Griffins x Montréal Sasanachs
Montréal Pomhommes x Barsteeg Albionpool
Atlético Elisabetano x Saint-Urbain Guerriers

A lot left to play for in the last two rounds. US Charlevoix are safely in first place, but there is going to be a fight for the other semi-finals spot between Atlético, Pomhommes (who have a big derby match), Black Tails, Guillemots and even theoretically Guerriers and Sasanachs. Sasanachs and Griffins are currently out of the playoffs, but some big wins in the last two rounds could put them in- making round 22's Sasanachs-Griffins matchup huge.

IMPORTANT SUPERLIGUE NOTICES:

I won't be around for a few days after this Wednesday, so the final regular season scorination will be on Wednesday. Next season I think I will move to four scorinations for the full season and then keep the playoffs on the schedule I am now.

Is there any interest in a Sport+ network sponsored international Handball championship as a tuneup for the Olympics? Basically all the nations involved with Superligue would take precedence over other countries- it'd be a semi-invitational format.

In the new look Série A, Tout-Puissant Outremont was able to win the regular season and thus guarantee a spot in the Globe Cup with only 61 points, sputtering into the playoffs having drawn Saint-Richard and lost to Dominion in their last two matches. The season was unusually close, and it seemed like any team could beat any other team on any given day- which created more intrigue for the fans, but likely means that Cotdelapomais clubs may not be a huge threat on the international scene (not that they ever were).
