Hello and welcome to Infosport.cdp's roundup of sports news from around Cotdelapoms!

The Télépom Mobilité Série A season kicks off very soon, and the transfer window is about to shut. It's been a less active offseason than last year, but two of the league's best players have found new homes in the offseason. All time national team leading scorer Jesper Jensen has found himself sold from Cap Nordique to Champions Cup contenders Pythons from Queer Poco el Mono Ara, for a fee of around C$5 million and older star striker Joe Richards.

After months of rumours, Christian finally found his way to the capital, as Cosmopolitan signed him for a fee of C$6 million from Sainte-Catherine. Cosmos used their Aeropag Invitational and Série A championship money wisely, also buying in Swartaz hitman Konstantin Brita. Saints reinvested that Christian money to sign Mytanar behemoth Rikpa to anchor their revamped defence, which also now features former Montréal space cadet right back Serge Pelletier.

Big money side Tout-Puissant Outremont are hoping to improve upon their 3rd place finish last year and disappointing international competition performance, and to do so have brought in a potential best strike pairing in the league this season, bringing in Zarblese big man Ivan Otehiveu and bringing back Godofredo Paixão, who was the leading scorer for the club in their first time through Série A.

Montréal had a curious offseason, bringing in no big stars, relying heavily on their youth, although they did sign away attacking midfielder Saku Pratte from Outremont. Sparta, last season's big disappointment, have decided to make youth their priority, under new Waaldish manager Hans Jaansen, signing young Kagdazkan defender Yuri Utepov and the already much traveled 20 year old defensive midfielder Marek Radinek. The team are also in talks to sign two members of Unitopolis's last di Brandini Cup team.

Turning now to motorsports, the Fritidien! Rallye Cotdelapoms, the fourth stop on this season's Greater Cotswalds Rally Championship was a disappointment for team Loto-Marianne, who were the lucky winners of the Kapital Rally. Jean-Louis LaMontagne and Maxime Jones seemed to find themselves in fourth position from wire to wire, never looking much like they'd either lose their spot or move up. Fredrik Trier, usually used to playing second fiddle to Integrale teammate Markus Scholl, won the race. Team Loto-Marianne are now 4th on the table, and their second car, driven by Jari Maarkt should be able to debut by the peaceful Rally Paalbrek.

A round of mixed results for the Cotdelapomais sides in the MCUL, the Worcester Mastodons defeated the Cizian Mariners 19-8, the Albionpool Otters got a heartbreaking loss to the Esca Wolves 8-9, the Hamilton Lumberjacks also fell just short, losing 14-13 to the Ouverjavaa Rebels, despite another brilliant effort by Serge Charest-X'Arc'H. The Lumberjacks are currently a half game out of a playoff spot, and the Otters are currently a half game out of first place.

It was no sunnier in the United Conference, as the Kensington Heights Cranes and Portsmouth Drakkar both fell, although Îles-d'Elisabeth beat the Dzinkgrad Revolution 9-8. The Voyageurs, Cranes and Drakkar are all well behind first place Alzburg, but they are all competitive for playoff spots, meaning there should at least be a Cotdelapomais side in the final of the United Conference.

Gérard Picher, massive young defender for the world-beating Alzburg Saints, has really shown himself to be a force and should be a regular for the national team once qualifying kicks off for the next WLC.

The much discussed Anser Premier League hockey competition between teams from Cotdelapoms and Greater Cotswalds has yet to kick off due to a disagreement over wages between the players and the team owners. The two sides are struggling to broker a deal that is acceptable to all parties, and rumours are suggesting that the two nations' leagues may have to split up again. Our nation's hockey loving public has instead been fixated on the LHJMM, the Marianne Junior Hockey League, which is having its' most exciting season ever, with six of its' eighteen teams currently within 1 point of first place, and all eyes on Jean-Luc Barr, the 16 year old centre for Beauport Clippers, who has 21 goals and 27 assists in 20 games, far and away a record to this point. Just about every observer assumes he will be the #1 pick in two seasons, regardless if the draft is for the APL or for a Cotdelapomais domestic competition.

The 20th annual St-Fortunat Bonspiel is underway, featuring rinks from each of Cotdelapoms' four regions, along with the National rink skipped by Pierre Saint-Hilaire and a wild-card rink skipped by Alex Gignac.

Marianne 1 0 1 2 1 1 0 0 X X 6
Cap Nordique 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 X X 0

The Marianne rink skipped by Martin Deslauriers made short work of the Cap rink skipped by Niklas Federström, taking points even without the hammer and getting a victory after only 8 ends.

Chênederven 0 1 2 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 6
Wild Card 3 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 3 8

An exciting victory for Alex Gignac's rink, who needed at least 1 with the hammer in the final end to win, but managed to get 3, giving Gregory Tennant's rink a tough loss.

Côte-Est 0 2 0 0 2 1 1 0 1 0 7
National 1 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 1 5

Disappointing showing for the national rink in their first match in this competition, as Côte-Est's rink, skipped by David Courtois won a hard fought match.

The Croix Bleue Premiership season is in limbo at the moment, as the league is looking for international involvement before the season can begin, all but six of the clubs have folded, and the league is hoping for some other nations to send teams to the event this season. Meanwhile, the existing clubs are picking up the stars of the folded clubs, the most notable being fly-half Marcel DesAlliers coming from Club Jeunesse to Newport Ghosts.

Cap Nordique Argonauts, last year's Darjeeling Cup champions, have re-signed their quarterback Yannick Davidson to a 2 year, $150,000 contract. Davidson, a native of Portsmouth and one of only three Cotdelapomais quarterbacks in the league, was heavily rumoured to be headed to the popular but unsuccessful Portsmouth Sea Dogs in the offseason, but the Argos were able to co-erce him into staying. Now the question is whether or not the team can be co-erced into staying in Cap Nordique. Despite winning the Darjeeling Cup, attendance at Stade Banque Polaris was under 10,000 on average for the season, and a group from Saint-Urbain are looking to bring the team there.

Montréal Saints, who finished last season 8-9, have signed tail-back Rasheed Tr'Ich'Lz away from the Worcester Ibex for $78,000. Tr'Ich'Lz was a South Division All-Star last season, rushing for 813 yards last season. The Saints have also re-signed kicker Maxime Trout, the league's leading scorer last season.

It makes sense that Greater Cotswalds and Cotdelapoms, two nations with hockey ingraned in their blood, the passion of competition a national mindset and a history of sporting co-operation would merge their leagues together. In doing so they also include the tiny nation of Nova Cambria et PBI.

The merger did not happen overnight. The fans, players and managements from both leagues were initally skeptical, the notion of extended travel, reorganziation, preservation of old rivalires and television rights all playing major roles. It would be two men, François K. Dumas and Markko Koluu, the commisioners of the Toussant Superligue and the National Premier League respectively. After intense negotations between the men, involving intense webinars, sauna sessions and boardroom antics, the tentative deal was struck. All that was needed was for the teams and players agree to a Collective Bargaining Agreement, which proved to be thorny- a long strike was only just resolved.

In their joint press release to bring the new Anser Premier League to the world, they said the aim was, "to foster competitive spirit and improve hockey in all three nations. also, money."As a tribute to the men who made this deal happen, the prize for the best team is the Dumas-Koluu Cup.

Thierry Junot, Goalkeeper for Montréal and the national team has been approached by former champions of the Cafundeú First Division, Clube Imperial. The club would almost certainly sell, but with the season about to kick off Montréal will almost certainly be left scrambling and will likely have to rely upon Serge Veilleux[b].

Meanwhile, Cosmopolitan has added Hanoxian striker [b]Jeremiah Yop-Baye
from the club Avivus in Hanox. Maritime has signed Saint-Alexandre international Yvann Trepanier to bolster their flimsy attack.

Legendary Poconese defender turned Dominion manager Karim Zaki has told the press he expects to break the top 6 this season. "When I look around at camp and look at this group of players, I see a team that can compete for an international place. We know Huw Rhys-Evans can score goals, and I think we're going to be pretty sturdy defensively if I have anything to say about it."

Baseball Cotdelapoms has qualified for World Baseball Classic 17, likely to be held in the nation of Lycrabon. Baseball Cotdelapoms also announced that in this year's event, the national team will be managed by François Désilets.

Many congratulations to 5th ranked Strathcona University in Portsmouth for their victory in the CIS WBC. Left Fielder Mark Bryant was huge in the series with 1st ranked Hamilton College, going 7-14 with 2 circuits and 8 runs batted in. He was less crucial in the Final with Georges Laronde, but he still won the CIS WBC MVP award. The award for best pitcher was actually given to Jolicœur's Alexandre-Étienne Papineau, who shut out 2nd ranked Accord and then allowed just 2 runs in 6 innings against Georges Laronde before the bullpen blew it and gave up 6 more. He also struck out 16 batters in the tournament.

Should such people exist, it's an exciting day for CFL fans abroad, as the league announced expansion to Greater Cotswalds and Nova Cambria et PBI with the addition of the Waalen Thunder and PBI Rocket.

The Charlevoix Bataillon Vert has announced the signing of free agent Slot Receiver Desmond Arnaud to a 3 year, $200k contract. Arnaud had 72 catches last season for Côte-Est, making him the Baleiniers leading receiver.

Team Loto-Marianne had another decent outing on the GCRC, this time at Rally Paalbrek, in the sunny vacation capital of Greater Cotswalds. Waaldish asphalt specialist Jari Maarkt was called upon to pilot the second car, which seemed to be a smart move at least in Paalbrek. His car held the lead for much of the campaign, but unfortunate mechanical problems retarded their efforts. Indeed, team Loto-Marianne are not the best at fixing mechanical issues, something they may need to consider working on should they want to be in the hunt for the team title next season.

The LaMontagne/Jones team cruised to another third place finish, putting them on the podium at every race thusfar and now moving them into third in the drivers championship. It is unlikely however that they will break the glass ceiling being held up by the Integrale team's two cars, who are 1 and 2 in the standings. Loto-Marianne are now comfortably third in the Constructor's Table.

The nation of Mytannion will provide four clubs for the next season of the Croix Bleue Premiership. The four teams will be the Thessia Jets, Cassia Metro, Ebor Northmen and Nasto Islanders and be made up largely of Mytanar players. Their neighbouring nation of Pontinur will also provide the Pontinurii Wildcats. There are still discussions ongoing with the rugby boards of Greater Cotswalds and Nova Cambria for new teams, but this now puts the competition at roughly 11 clubs, although there are rumours that Club Jeunesse will be folding shortly too.

With much fanfare, the Télépom Mobilité Série A campaign kicked off, and round one brought some exciting results.

MATCHDAY 1
Cosmopolitan 3-1 Laval
(Brita 23', Michalak 37', Deschênes 56', Radom 84')
With rumours swirling that François Michalak will be off to the Cafundelense League, Laval manager Rick West must wish that the deal would hurry up, as Michalak and new signing Konstantin Brita were far too much for les Voisins to handle, as they put the match out of reach not long after the second half began. Nils Radom scored a consolation goal for the visitors.

Saint-Urbain 2-2 Sainte-Catherine
(Becker 11', Parekh 45', Ivandro 65', Andropolis 88')
The battle of Saints' fittingly featured the home side getting two goals from its' two Saint-Alexandrois internationals, Wolfgang Becker and Elvis Andropolis. This match was a real shocker, as few tipped the Horsemen to do anything this season other than go straight down, but Saints showed that they are perhaps more reliant on Christian than they led people to believe. Gilbert Le Tallec had a great match as usual, setting up the Ragnish Parekh goal for Saints, and drawing the foul that led to the Ivandro free kick wondergoal, but former Cosmos midfielder Alphonse Bastarache teamed up brilliantly with Andropolis for the equaliser with little time left to drive the home fans at Parc Fairmount crazy with their first ever Série A point.

Rouen 1-1 Chambly
(Joliat 52', Berthiaume 63')
A bit of a snoozer at Arena Pascal Roux. Chambly's signing with major brewery Toussaint in the offseason led many to believe they may try to become a major player, but they spent any sort of potential cash windfall on locking up U-21 defender Loïk Mailhot, a move that should pay off long term but leaves their prospects of staying up slim. Henri Joliat of Rouen opened up the scoring, but new boy Jérémy Berthiaume tied it up not long after and not much happened beyond that.

Sparta 4-0 Dominion
(Pastiche 32', Carbonnier 54', Pluzic 71', Belmont 78')
Karim Zaki was a superlative player in his long career, but his managerial campaign has started off with a vicious thud, as suddenly unfashionable Sparta put on a clinic that likely reminded many long-time Série A viewers of the Sparta sides of old. Hans Jaansen's side counter-attacked masterfully, which was coincidentally the strategy many thought Zaki would bring to Hamilton. Pomme Blanc Sev Alves was perhaps the most important player to the offence, nimbly displacing the Whites' attackers and setting up midfield breaks that led to the Vladimir Pastiche and Adrian Belmont goals. Michel Carbonnier scored from one of his trademark free kicks and Nica Pluzic exploited a gap and an excellent cross from new boy Marek Radinek.

Montréal 2-1 Worcester Hearts
(Faille 47', Pratte 59', Parent 84')
Worcester are perhaps the most highly regarded of the Série A new boys, having shown up claiming that they will not only not get relegated, but will compete to be in the top half of the table. Whilst the Tricolore were able to put them away, they did their claims some justice. Montréal had the quietest offseason amongst the big name teams, doing more selling than buying, hoping to count on young stars like Dermot O'Brien, Alexandre Faille and Stefano Della Citta. Their first goal was a demonstration of the red hot Faille's talents, receiving the ball on the left wing, cutting inward and evading two defenders before launching a blast at the top of the box that talented young keeper Romain Fredriksson had no chance at. Offseason signing Saku Pratte scored the second for Montréal, pouncing on a ball in a goalmouth scramble and slipping it past Hearts' Owen Price. Alex Parent did score a consolation goal for the visitors.

Tout-Puissant Outremont 0-1 Cap Nordique
(Matis 16')
Bit of a shocker in the second city, as big money Outremont gave up an early goal to Cap Nordique, playing their first match AJJ (After Jesper Jensen). The purple and black attacked in waves, finishing the match with four forwards trying desperately to get through to level it, but no such luck could be found. Much credit for the visitors should go to their stirling defence, which looked confident and on the same wavelength all match, even with the addition of youngster Frédéric X'Ch'Ital.

Maritime 2-0 Celtic
(Ribeiro 32', 57')
One has to wonder how many times a player can be called "the most underrated player in the league" before he becomes overrated (and at least gets one call up from the national team), but Lucas Ribeiro must be getting there. He is on pace to lead the league in goals this season after he netted two in his side's opening victory over a lifeless Celtic side at Stade Océanic. Celtic's new target-man Helio Teixiera did not seem to connect as well with number 10 Rodrigo Lopez as did previous striker Godofredo Paixão, something which Celtic coach Marc LaRoche hopes is only a temporary problem, as the Gwenn ha du simply do not have the depth to succeed if their star creator and star scorer are not on the same page.

Étoile Rouge 0-0 Gradiel
A snoozefest that was mostly notable for the hubbub surrounding the absense of Étoile Rouge midfielder Alex Colorado, leading many to think he is about to be sold. Étoile Rouge seemed to be sleepwalking and playing far too direct, which led the notoriously fickle Stade Arnaud Livre crowd to boo its' own players at the full time whistle. Gradiel midfield thug Renate Bard picked up the first red card of the young Série A season for a vicious two footed tackle on Carlo Vicenzi, which also sparked the crowd's interest- that the team didn't match their enthusiasm was probably a large part of the disappointment. Round 2 will feature Étoile Rouge hosting hated rivals Maritime, so the fans had best get the players fired up before it's too late.

The long rumoured dealings between Cafundelense clubs and Cotdelapomais clubs have been finalised, and three of our nation's biggest stars are heading to the world's best league. Central United have signed François Michalak in a deal that saw about C$4 million and former U-23 star Ramón returning to Cosmopolitan. Clube Imperial have made national team keeper Thierry Junot their new goalkeeper, in exchange for about C$3 million and Imperial's ex-keeper Getúlio, who was made redundant. Alex Colorado has left Étoile Rouge for Atlético Central, making him the third Étoile Rouge star to leave for foreign soil in the last two offseasons, along with Per-Olivier Johansson-Bakvis and Serge Lambert.

These were not the only deals made this week, as a few players have arrived from the dismantled Norrion Rovers of the Eastfield Lodge league- ex-Laval striker Didier Renaud is now...Laval striker Didier Renaud, as Renaud was reunited with his brother and his old club after signing a two year deal. Sparta signed Emrys Hywel-Jones, which quietly gives the club one of the best midfields in a league full of good ones. Hywel-Jones' Nova Cambrian compatriot Malcolm McIver, a fantastic defensive mid has been brought into the league by Dominion manager Karim Zaki, clearly humiliated by his side's 4-0 loss in round 1.

MATCHDAY 2

(Le Tallec 63')

(D. Renaud 84')
Dominion 0-0 Saint-Urbain
Worcester Hearts 2-0 Rouen
(Luamba 21', Parent 43')
Cap Nordique 3-1 Sparta
(Endemann 32', Pastiche 51', Paulistinha 66', Franzen 85')

Gradiel 2-3 Tout-Puissant Outremont
(Paixão 25', Otehiveu 38', Piché 53', Carvalho 77', Ladouceur 82')
Étoile Rouge 0-0 Maritime

Miguel Silva makes a big splash in his début for Le Tricolore, opening his goal scoring account just 11 minutes in to his first match to put Montréal past Celtic. Outremont get a big win on the road against newly promoted Gradiel. The East Coast derby is a tense 0-0 draw that features a lot of aggression, including two red cards- one a piece for Pablos Tzaklas and Pinto. Saints get the big win in the match of the round, defeating the defending champs on a classic Gilbert Le Tallec brace. The match was a tense and close affair that could have easily gone either way.

MATCHDAY 3
Cosmopolitan 2-1 Chambly
(Ramón 53', Gervais 70', Berthiaume 81')
Sainte-Catherine 0-3 Dominion
(Rhys-Evans 25', 77', Timah 42')
Laval 2-1 Worcester Hearts

Tout-Puissant Outremont 4-3 Maritime
(Otehiveu 21', Ribeiro 28', Brunette 36', Aslan 47', Kulli 63', Lloyd 80', Higuain 83')

Cosmos get back to their winning ways with a 2-1 win over the Brewers, including the first career goal by Ramón. Saints' reached incredible highs last week, but were torn apart by excited Huw Rhys-Evans, just brought into Sacha Chrétien's Cup of Harmony squad. Outremont won a shootout with Maritime that featured 7 different goal scorers and was won by burly Osarian full-back Rafael Higuain. Montréal kept their narrow winning ways alive with a half-time dagger from Sacha St-Onge.

MATCHDAY 4
Dominion 0-0 Cosmopolitan
Worcester Hearts 0-1 Chambly
(Lussier 75')
Cap Nordique 0-1 Sainte-Catherine
(Mehdi 62')
Celtic 1-0 Laval
(Neuer 31')
Gradiel 2-0 Saint-Urbain
(Beaubien 69', Bard 74')
Étoile Rouge 1-0 Rouen
(Zedafski 41')
Maritime 0-2 Sparta
(Carbonnier PK 14', Lloyd-Joyce 80')
Tout-Puissant Outremont 1-1 Montréal
(Paixão PK 34', Faille 73')

Dominion kept up their giant slaying ways with a draw against Cosmopolitan, parking the bus in front of the net for perhaps the first time ever, showing that Karim Zaki really has taught them a new system. Saints won the big battle by beating Cap with a Mehdi header off an Ivandro free kick. Sparta had no trouble visiting the east coast in defeating Maritime 2-0. A classic between Outremont and Montréal ended up 1-1, a fluke André Blanc-Senac handball gave Tout-Puissant a penalty that Getúlio had no chance at to put the Monsters up 1-0, but Le Tricolore leveled near the end thanks to workhorse Alexandre Faille.

MATCHDAY 5
Cosmopolitan 3-0 Worcester Hearts
(Christian 14', Brita 55', Letetre 63')
Dominion 1-0 Cap Nordique
(Thiago 88')
Chambly 1-2 Celtic
(Berthiaume 54', Gallant 59', Collins 78')
Sainte-Catherine 0-2 Gradiel
(Beaubien 2', 74')
Laval 2-1 Étoile Rouge
(D. Renaud PK 34', Tennant 61', Nkong 74')
Saint-Urbain 0-0 Maritime
Rouen 1-1 Tout-Puissant Outremont
(Rigobert 42', Kulli 83')
Sparta 2-1 Montréal
(Pastiche 7', Radinek 62', Miguel Silva 88')

Cosmos, who have been seemingly quiet all season, blew up against Worcester, Christian scored his first goal in black, and he was joined on the score sheet by Swartaz international Konstantin Brita and former White Apple Alain Letetre. Who knew Dominion had it in them to hold high flying Cap to a clean sheet? Karim Zaki's defensive strategy worked again, parking the bus once more, and this team benefiting from a late Thiago deflection to give the surprising White Knights a huge victory. Gradiel, led by Edouard Beaubien, got a surprising victory against Saints, who seem to be manic every year. Outremont get some late heroics from Tarrentum's Victor Flavius Kulli to neutralise an early Jocelyn Rigobert header. Sparta get some of their old panache back as ex-Tricolore midfielder Marek Radinek scores the winner against his old club.

Perhaps inspired by Sainte-Catherine's argyle jersey, Montréal have introduced a new change shirt in a checker-board pattern.

Dumas-Koluu Cup Final Preview: Montréal vs. Kamloops

After all of the sturm und drang that came with the very first Anser Premier League hockey season, it seems only fitting that the finals of the Dumas-Koluu Cup Playoffs feature one team from Cotdelapoms, and one from Greater Cotswalds. Both sides arrive in the finals after hard-fought semis- the Beavers of Kamloops squeaked into the playoffs in 4th place in the Marr Division, and then toured the ports- clawing past the Noordpoort Mariners in 6, the top rated Suudpoort Commodores in 7, and their Marr Division rivals the Princess Béatrice Island Rangers in a tense 7 game series in which neither team ever scored more than 2 goals in a game.

Montréal, meanwhile, had to push past the high-flying Tirpenz Rangers in the first round of the playoffs, followed by a peculiar decimation of the Osprey and a hard fought 7 game series with Buurg that saw them get blown out twice. Les Citoyens have won the deciding game of their last two playoff series in overtime, and have built up a reputation as cardiac kids, sending 4 of their 12 playoff victories thusfar into overtime, with a perfect 4-0 record in extra periods.

The Beavers are a very balanced team, with the only star to speak of being centreman Pieter Morrissen, an exquisite passer and standout teammate. Kamloops' general strategy tends to revolve around playing a complete game, passing well, working hard every shift and not being afraid to go into corners- which is perhaps why they've done better in the playoffs than in the regular season. Montréal are not particularly different- hard hitting defenceman Alexandre Briére has been the key to their run thusfar. His phenomenal power play slap shot and general status as an impenetrable force have made up for occasional lapses in play by the forwards. The goaltending of Pascal Sévigny has also been critical for Les Citoyens- and it's been erratic. He has stolen his fair share of games this playoffs, but he occasionally has a screamer, like in game four against Buurg.

Montréal's chances in the final will likely live and die by three things: Sévigny's goaltending, the often dominant power play, and whether or not Luca Messina can get hot at the right time. The team's leading scorer has a bit of a reputation as a flake, and whilst he was huge in the series against the Osprey, he's gone missing during the tough series so far. Whilst the Beavers are hard working and will not lapse, they are not overly physical, so Messina and 18 year old phenom Julien Champagne may be able to get the space they need to do their thing and score. If they do, expect Les Citoyens in 6.

Cosmopolitan Stuns Burnaby SC, Advances to Group Stage

After a maddening 0-0 draw at Stade Cosmopolitan, few observers thought the Cosmos would be able to head into the Swangard Stadium and come away winners. After all, Burnaby SC are one of the top clubs in Kelssek, a nation with a league that is historically much stronger than ours. History, however, is just that, and the defending Série A champions proved that to be the case.

The men in black looked tentative early in the match, and the home side controlled the pace through much of the first half. With Salvatore Eagle III off in Rejistania, Alain Deschanel seemed woefully unprepared for the Burnaby attack, and only backup goalkeeper Julien Lachapelle (on for Maxime Lucas, also off in Rejistania) stood between Cosmos and another year away from the group stage. The second half seemed to be much of the same early on, until a minor miracle occurred- Burnaby had started to creep forward far too many players, and after another thwarted attack, Zarblese defender Joan Maklein was off, linking with Aimé Gervais, who blasted forward a long ball ahead to Hanox international Jeremiah Yop-Baye. Yop-Baye evaded the offsides trap and his footwork was far too much for a scrambling Kelssek national team keeper Claude Chamonix. Cosmos took a 1-0 lead.

With this, it seemed the home side simply folded. The Cotdelapomais champs had their way with Burnaby, and an absurd run from Cafundelense attacker Ramón was punctuated with a superb strike to give the team an insurmountable lead and a place in the Champions Cup group stages, where they will enter Group B, joined by Sonoma Center Panthers, from Capitalizt SLANI, Mercia Bromham from Krytenia and Jamaica Giants, from Jasĭyun. Whilst Cosmos are likely not favoured by anyone to advance, it should be noted that they have generally performed well in these international competition group stages, having gone far in the previous Aeropag Invitational.

CHL Season Preview: North Division/Division Nord

Welcome to the season preview for the first season of the new CHL. Ice hockey has long been the most popular indoor sport in Cotdelapoms, with countless previous championships held. With the dissolution of the Anser Premier League due to financial problems and travel concerns, the 14 remaining Cotdelapomais and Nova Cambrian teams added 5 new sides (all of which had been in previous existence) to form a new Cotdelapomais Hockey League. The league will coninue to use the Dumas Cup that has been the trophy for almost a hundred years of Cotdelapomais hockey championships.

There will be a first year player draft coming shortly, the order of which will be determined by a random lottery, giving an advantage to teams that finished poorly or were not in existence during the last season of the APL. Each CHL team will also have a minor league affiliate in either the LHM (Ligue de Hockey du Marianne) or the SHL (Southern Hockey League). Each team will play 62 games, 8 a piece against each team in their division, and 2 a piece against each other team in the league.

There will likely be a lot of roster changes to the teams between the Entry Draft and the Import Player Assignment, so the season preview will pertain mostly to team histories.

Montréal Cotdelapomais
Image
Image
Image

The oldest and most successful team in the CHL, having won the Dumas Cup 25 times, including last year's APL Dumas-Koluu Cup, defeating the Kamloops Beavers in 7 games. The team features young stud winger Julien Champagne, who many expect big things from, and high scoring centre Luca Messina.

The Cotdelapomais (or "Les Citoyens") play at the massive Centre Télépom Mobilité, which seats over 24000. Its' fanbase is massive, devoted, fickle and impatient, generally demanding immediate success. In winning the title last season, they got what they expected, but they do not celebrate it- nothing is ever quite good enough for them. As a result, players get burnt out quickly playing for Montréal. Their biggest rivals are the Albionpool Oak Leafs and the Montréal Royals, although the fans treat the Royals as too small time to be worth their real ire.

Montréal Royals
Image
Image
Image

The Royals made the APL playoffs last season but crashed out early to the powerhouse Gaal Jets. Other than free-wheeling winger Luc Dionne, the Royals lack real starpower, although they have a cavalcade of impressive role players. They also have brought in a new Head Coach and General Manager named Christian Bruneau who comes from a new wave of hockey minds who use "advanced" statistics. In his first move he sent out a series of scouts to lesser ice hockey nations in hopes of uncovering some new talent.

Montréal is a hockey mad city and the only city in the league with two teams. Whilst most of the city are Citoyen fans, the Royals have a moderate sized fanbase, certainly in the league's top half. They have a definite rivalry with the Cotdelapomais, and they also have a recent history with the Saints, with whom they have a tendency to get into fights. The team plays on the outskirts of town in the Alex Rideu Auditorium, which seats 17000.

Cap Nordique Drakkar
Image

Image
Image

The northerners were a disappointment last season, finishing 7th in their division in the APL. They are heavily reliant on their power play, which contributed an inordinate number of their goals last season, and was one of the best in the league. Their star is puck moving defenceman Émile D'Aoust.

Cap Nordique loves hockey and supports the Drakkar fairly well. Although the Banque Polaris Centre is a very old building, it seats 19500 and they usually sell out. The fan base are known for elaborate displays and generally dislike all of the other teams equally- definitely not a great place to go as a visiting fan.

St-Fortunat Saints
Image
Image
Image

The Saints had a lousy year last year in the APL, and seemed especially offensively inept. The closest thing the team had to a star is pest Frédéric Blouin, perhaps the best player in the league at drawing penalties, and also one of the best at having penalties called against himself. Blouin has probably gotten under the skin of every team in the league at this point in his career.

St-Fortunat is a tiny island winter wonderland in the north, somewhat isolated from the other cities in the league. It plays in the league's smallest arena, the 14200 seat Colisée Jubilee. The team was wildly successful both on the ice and at the gate about 20 seasons ago, but at this point they struggle to fill the arena with their own fans- although because it is a popular winter tourism destination, large packs of away fans often take over, especially from nearby Cap Nordique. The team has a rivalry with the Drakkar and the Royals, whom they often fight.

Saint-Urbain Citadelles
Image
Image
Image

The Citadelles had a decent season last year in the APL, but failed to make the playoffs due to playing in a tough division. Winger Rémy Tremblay is one of the league's flashiest skaters, and also among the most erratic players. That he led the league in hat tricks last season and finished only eleventh in goals says a lot.

Saint-Urbain is home to the 18500 seat Colisée Fritidien!, an old arena with a lot of charm, but few modern amenities like luxury boxes and whatnot. It is actually quite intimidating, as the stands go very high up- it is quite difficult to see from the nosebleed seats. The fans are moderately aggressive, and mostly have a problem with the Cotdelapomais and the Owls.

CHL Season Preview: Eastern Division/Division Est

Côte-Est Mariners
Image

Image

The Mariners had a respectable APL season last year before bowing out to the hated Osprey in the first round of the playoffs. The team is led by the excellent Jean-André Vlemincx, perhaps the league's best passer. Expectations are high this time around, as the team's core are all hitting their prime simultaneously. They are a team with a high probability of trading away draft picks and prospects to get talent to win now.

Côte-Est is a vibrant but small city with a decent hockey culture. They play in the 16800 seat Digitek Centre, a newer building with an obnoxious goal horn. There is also a large anchor that gets lowered from the rafters after each Mariner goal, which can also get frustrating as an away fan. The Mariners and the Osprey have one of the biggest rivalries in the league, although Mariner fans are generally pretty jovial and welcoming to anyone else.

Île-d'Elisabeth Osprey

Image
Image
Image

The Osprey got run over by the Cotdelapomais in the APL playoffs last season, but they were generally one of the best Cotdelapomais teams in the APL. Goaltender Maxime Deslaurier is regarded as the best goalie in the league, and was given a large contract to go with that reputation. He will have to live up to the contract to push the Osprey towards the Cup, rather than folding in the playoffs as he has done in the last two seasons.

Île-d'Elisabeth is a strange, hipster city that loves sports but seems peculiarly disinterested in winning as much as it is interested in defeating Côte-Est in things. Osprey fans loathe the Mariners, but are usually nonchalant towards other clubs. The team play in the very large Centre Valaire, which hosted the World Junior Championships this year. It is an arena filled with any sort of modern amenity you could hope for.

Sorel Pomhommes

Image
Image
Image

The Pomhommes (a slang nickname for Cotdelapomais people) are an older team, but did not participate in the APL last season, instead soldiering on in the much depleted Toussaint Superligue. Sorel probably have the weakest squad in the league right now, so they are hoping for good positioning in the drafts. The Pomhommes were very successful for a while about 20 years ago, but never won a Cup.

Sorel is a moderate sized city, and the fans are fickle. The fanbase also skews much harder towards families in Sorel than in any other CHL city, which makes it a friendly place to visit as a visiting fan. The 15800 seat Aréna Jacques Tracy is bland, but has highly affordable tickets. Pomhommes fans have no real rivalries within the current league.

Princess Béatrice Island Rangers

Image
Image
Image

The only non-Cotdelapomais team in the league, the Rangers had a great run in last year's APL playoffs, losing eventually to the Kamloops Beavers. The Rangers are also among the favourites to win the Cup this year. They have only been playing in Cotdelapomais leagues for a few seasons, but have already put together a very strong team, starring right winger Guillaume Lajeunesse, one of the best at hitting and getting in front of the goalie.

Princess Béatrice Island is off the coast of Nova Cambria et PBI, and doesn't have a rabid hockey culture, it's a very football-centric place. However, the fans regularly fill the PBI National Arena, which seats a respectable 17500. Because of their isolation, they really do not experience away fans or have any sort of rivalry.

Rouen Caribou
Image
Image
Image

The Caribou did not participate in the APL last season, but were a force in some of the older Cotdelapomais leagues. They played in and won last year's Toussaint Superligue, and will retain much of that team. They've also acquired Gaston Yelle, a penalty killing specialist.

Rouen is a small city with a decent sports culture. It is also one of the warmest places in Cotdelapoms, although people are still into hockey. The team plays at the Rousseau Forum, which seats 16500. The cities of Rouen and Gradiel have been rivals forever, but with Gradiel not in their league anymore, Rouen have no natural rivals, although they had a series of hard fought matchups with the Osprey in the past.

CHL Season Preview: South Division/Division Sud

Albionpool Oak Leafs

Image

Image
Image

Along with the Cotdelapomais, they've been the most successful team in the history of Cotdelapomais hockey. They had a disappointing playoffs last term, but a solid season and are still expected to do well. Louis Saint-Laurent will always get all of the attention, but his 5'6 teammate Andrew Rice is the real star here. Although he's already won two Dumas Cups, the team will also be trying to win this year for goaltender Mark Crow, who is nearing retirement and is perhaps the only stand-up goalie still playing in the world. That he can still be successful is a testament to his skill and determination, but he cannot play as many games as he used to, so they will need to find a credible backup, and soon.

Albionpool is the capital and a centre for business, but is sort of detached from much of the nation for language and cultural reasons. The fanbase is large, and has a reputation for being arrogant and clueless, but it also eats up hockey- as is evidenced by the always sold out Oak Air Centre, which seats 21800 and has far and away the most expensive tickets in the league. Whilst the Cotdelapomais may be the league's "glamour" team, the Oak Leafs bring in the most revenue in merchandise, the box office and television. Their rivalries tend to be with teams outside of their division, like the Cotdelapomais or the Drakkar.

Kingston Musketeers
Image

Image
Image

The Musketeers have dedicated themselves to rebuilding and will likely be big movers and shakers at the upcoming draft. They play slowly, aggressively and bullyingly and draw a lot of penalties. Whilst they are not particularly good, they do have a tendency to drag down some of the better finesse teams and beat them through sheer frustration. No word yet whether they want to continue that style once they rebuild.

Kingston is a worn out old industrial city that, for whatever reason, turns out a lot of Cotdelapoms' best writers. Going to games at the 17100 seat Phoenix Arena is a very different experience depending on where you are. The cheap seats are filled with aggressive lunatics and are no place for away fans, but down below in the pricier spots you can meet some of the most knowledgeable hockey fans in the whole country. The Musketeers and Snowbirds have a pretty big rivalry, though, so if you are a Worcester fan I'd advise against any part of the building.

Worcester Snowbirds
Image

Image
Image

The big, bad Snowbirds have been a poor team for a long time, and as a result have been stockpiling prospects, many of whom could very well turn the team around in the coming season or two. Jérôme Cyr has already proved himself a talent, and he is only 21. It might be time to cut ties with aging veteran d-man Marc Berri, who is too much of a jerk to be a good veteran leader for this young team.

Worcester is a medium sized city that has a bad reputation but is vibrant and bustling if you know where to look. The arena, the 18000 seat GCCU Centre is old but gets renovated often because the city does not want to build a new arena. The city has some very smart hockey fans, although financial concerns mean that sometimes the building is not entirely full. Their rivalry with Kingston is one of the best in the league.

Lacs D'Été Otters
Image

Image
Image

The Otters were the Lakers last year in the APL, but are hoping for a fresh start in the CHL, with a new logo and a new arena. The Otters had a poor season last year, but that was largely due to injuries. Perfectly healthy, they are perhaps the CHL's most average team, emphasised by quiet workhorse star Roch Cormier.

The Otters just built a brand new arena, the shiny 17500 seat Swift Bank Arena, which has already sold out many games. This is a huge improvement over their old Civic Centre, which was often half empty. Lacs D'Été is a small city mostly known as a summer resort, so they do not necessarily have the longest hockey history, but the fans who do show up are knowledgeable. Their rivalry is mostly with the Mallards, who they are often separated from historically.

Hamilton Tigers
Image

Image
Image

The Tigers are a shambles at the moment, which is a shame because they have some high end talent. Ownership disputes and systemic mismanagement have left them in a sorry state. They have enough talent to make a playoff push, especially with the excellent two-way d-man Isaac Gagnon and savvy playmaker Claude Dupuis, but the farm system is so depleted they have to stay perfectly healthy, and there is really no future beyond now.

Hamilton is a blue collar city that loves its' sports teams. Many of its fans are too exhausted to be threatening, which makes the 17150 seat Barsteeg Arena a pretty decent place to visit. The city likes to think of itself as rivalrous towards the Snowbirds, but the Snowbirds are too busy hating the Musketeers to notice. The Tigers have, however, gotten into a few scraps in the past few years with the Musketeers, so maybe they can muscle their way into some three-way hatred.

CHL Season Preview: West Division/Division Ouest

Charlevoix Montagnards
Image

Image
Image

The Montagnards are historically successful but were left out of the APL when it began because of concerns over their arena. As a result, a lot of the big talent left the team, which is unfortunate. The current squad did well last season in the Superligue but is lacking big stars. They also are probably going to be the only team in the league this season operating a goaltender tandem, as neither Alain Martin nor Pierre Renault were able to gain much traction last year.

Charlevoix play in the depleted old 16000 seat barn called the Colisée CPMC, which is falling apart. The city has no plans to build them a new arena, which is a point of contention for Hockey Cotdelapoms. Regardless, the arena is LOUD, even if it doesn't sell out, which is often. Charlevoix fans are boisterous but non-threatening.

Chambly Brasseurs
Image

Image
Image

Injuries to star defenceman Joseph Powell left the Brasseurs hopelessly adrift last season in the APL, the team leaked goals from every direction. This season could be better, it could be more of the same, it all depends on Powell's health and the development of some of their decent younger players.

Chambly is of course, the famous brewery town where much of Cotdelapoms' very famous beer and cidre is made. The fans at the 18500 seat Toussaint Forum are rowdy and drunk and love their team through thick and thin. This is the best arena to drink in in perhaps the entire world, the selections are plentiful and fresh and cheap- the price of a normal Cotdelapomais pub pint rather than pricey arena beer.

Xavier Ours Polaires
Image

Image
Image

Another team that did not participate in the APL last season, Xavier have tried to show early on they are not just here to make up the numbers in the CHL by trading for some talented prospects. The team likely won't compete this year, but could be a contender within a couple of seasons.

Xavier is a suburb of Outremont and thus their main rivals are the Owls. Xavier is a quiet, suburban township with polite, suburban fans. They don't do well at the gate in midweek unless the team is playing the Owls, so it's an easy place to go as a visiting fan. Their arena, the Centre Marianne Hydroéléctrique, seats 16500.

Portsmouth Mallards
Image

Image
Image

The Mallards are like a phoenix rising from the ashes, having existed in different capacities four different times before, but did not compete in any level of hockey last year. They will have a lot of work to do collecting players this offseason, although a special draft was held to give them LHM or SHL players who were either unattached or of a certain age, meaning that they at least have a decent core of minor leaguers, which is useful as depth over a long, grinding season.

Portsmouth is an old shipbuilding town that is now fairly well to do, and doesn't care a whole lot for hockey. As a result, expect the 16000 seat Anderson Coliseum to be half full frequently. It's also nearer to towns like Kingston and Worcester than to any of their division rivals, so expect more away support for those teams than for Charlevoix.

Outremont Owls
Image
Image
Image

The Owls have some of the best top line talent in the league with superstar centre Pierre Drouin and excellent power forward winger Rick Jones. They were very good last season, but a tremendous lack of depth kills them if any of their stars have an off night. They have too much money devoted to their stars, so unless there's systemic change, they likely will have to roll with what they've got.

The massive Aréna Loto-Marianne has lots of modern amenities, but lacks charm. Owl fans are diehards and dislike a lot of other teams, but Outremont is a fairly swanky city that can sometimes be fickle, so there are a lot of situations where the seats at the bottom are empty and the seats at the top are full and rowdy. Tickets are expensive, which discourages a lot of traveling fans.
