We're talking about ancient Rome here.
Back then there were many combats involving free men. And not all were to the death. Training the gladiators was expensive. There was no profit if half of your fighters died every time out. There had to be a way for beginners to start off before they earned a name for themselves.

As for us, we've noticed that in history books there was a great deal of gambling towards who was going to win in bouts. We would be very happy to take a piece of that action.
