FIFTY-FIFTH SEASON - PREVIEW: PART I
The Liga Federal de Valladares welcomes one and all to the fifty-fifth season of Valladar domestic football, with Fontvielle Impact coming into the new season as defending champions. This season will finally see the much-awaited return to the Apertura-Clausura system with a final to be played at the end of the year, which is expected to increase the league's competitiveness by giving the smaller teams more and better chances to qualify for international competition. Will the new competition format help Fontvielle Impact confirm their return by defending succesfully the title won last season? Will it be the time for another member of the "Big 6" to celebrate? Or will any of the smaller clubs take advantage of the switch and spoil the party for the favorites? So, without further ado, here we have this preview for you to start answering those questions!

Ajax Carloburgo:
Full Name: Football Club Ajax Carloburgo
Nicknames: The Immigrants, The Red-Whites
Stadium: Olympic Stadium, Carloburgo, Mountbatten (Cap. 38,755)
Kit Sponsor: ECOMM (Software development)
Honours (0): None
Last Season: Valladar Liga-1: 13th - Kings' Shield: Third round
Average Attendance: 20,317
Starting Lineup (4-4-2): Houghton - Campbell, Gardner, Andrews (C), Farfán - Fowler, Portilla, Muriel, Bell - Holmes, Armstrong
Moves Out: Aiden Pearson (FW, 24, VLD) to Tihon Tide (CMT)
Moves In: Lucas Bertin (FW, 18, VLD) promoted from Ajax Academy
Commentary: Ajax are coming off another average season in both the league and the Shield, where they were unable to get to at least the Round of 16 after ending as cup runners-up in the previous two seasons. For this upcoming season news are not really good as their main striker Aiden Pearson left for new challenges in Chromatika and was not properly replaced, meaning that the offensive line will lose some power. However, the remainder of the team and coach Alexander Pereira continue in the club, having gained more experience. Considering this panorama, it is safe to say that the second team from Carloburgo will continue aiming for mid-table stability, and maybe an outside chance at a Globe Cup berth if they manage to get in the way of the remaining contenders.
The Pundit's Prediction: Once again, the Immigrants are letting their main players go with leading striker Aiden Pearson being the most recent addition to the list. That loss will hit them really hard as the team looks more and more weakened every season. 15th.
AS Bezieres:
Full Name: Association Sportive de Bezieres
Nicknames: Les Rouges (The Reds), Les Démons (The Devils), L'ASB (The ASB), Les Aigles (The Eagles)
Stadium: Stade de Foix-Jules Picot, Bezieres, Foix (Cap. 63,170)
Kit Sponsors: Hydro-Foix (Electric utilites), Triangle Électronique (Home appliances)
Honours (25): 9 Valladar Liga-1 titles (Seasons 10, 11, 13, 16, 27, 36, 40, 42, 47), 7 Kings' Shields (KS 5, 9, 15, 19, 39, 41, 44), 5 Supercopas (SCV 5, 7, 18, 25, 29), 1 Torneo de Verano (Season 54), 3 Cup Winners' Cups (CWC 15, 16, 17)
Last Season: Valladar Liga-1: 7th - Kings' Shield: Winners
Average Attendance: 48,246
Starting Lineup (4-3-1-2): Dussan - Mayard, Donato, dos Santos (C), Loft - Rojas, de Préville, Lessard - Barrios - Mendoza, Núñez
Moves Out: Alfred Valdivia (FW, 24, VLD) to Brigham (EUR), Theo Bollaert (CB, 23, VLD) loaned to CAP
Moves In: Fabián Villafañe (FW, 20, VLD) promoted from ASB Academy
Commentary: The victory in the Kings' Shield final against Metropolis Alligators and the eventual qualification to both the Globe Cup and Cygnus Cup saved Ronald Labbadia and AS Bezieres from a resounding failure last season, as the team wasted the chance to secure international qualification via Liga-1 by losing the Derby to Fontvielle Impact and allowing their arch-rivals to win the championship, while also falling down to seventh place in the process. For this season, Les Rouges will have a significant loss: substitute striker Alfred Valdivia, who departed to the other side of the Ituyán looking for better chances. However, the starting 11 remains untouched and that is something that calms coach Labbadia a bit, as he has set his goals on a tenth league championship for Bezieres as well as a decent participation in international competition. Last but not least, Les Rouges will also have a "new" management, as owner Rémy de Saint-Lorent decided to deliver the baton to his daughter Catherine, who has set a milestone with this move as she becomes the first chairwoman of a top tier team in Valladares.
The Pundit's Prediction: Last season, Bezieres showed they can easily be either a candidate to win the title or a team that will suffer pains to clinch a UICA berth, just to botch it within inches of the finish line. Such volatility makes them an unpredictable and unreliable team, which will nevertheless be in the Globe Cup hunt until the end for this upcoming season. There's no Valdivia to rescue them in dire moments anymore, though. 6th.
AS Vaud:
Full Name: Association Sportive de Vaud-Gatineau
Nicknames: Les Étudiants (The Students)
Stadium: Stade Omnisports Gatineau, Gatineau, Foix (Cap. 18,500)
Kit Sponsor: None
Honours (0): None
Last Season: Valladar Liga-2: 2nd, Promoted - Kings' Shield: Third round
Average Attendance: 5,315
Starting Lineup (4-3-1-2): Moreira - Mallory, Brisson, Chrétien (C), Teixeira - Pellegrino, Groleau, Silva - Páez - Duhamel, Balzan
Moves Out: Walter Ribonetti (AM, 27, VLD) loaned to Real Campo Grande
Moves In: Ricardo Teixeira (LB, 28, VLD) from Hoxford Rovers, Rafael Pellegrino (MR, 24, VLD) on loan from Libertad, Mauricio Arias (FW, 19, VLD) on loan from Canalave Dragons
Commentary: Last season, Vaud were one of the sides who displayed the best football in Liga-2 and their outstanding campaign allowed them to finish in second place, thus they are back to Liga-1 as the sole representative from Gatineau in the top tier. Les Étudiants are fully aware that their goal for this season will be avoiding relegation, and they decided to strengthen their squad with defender Ricardo Teixeira and forward Mauricio Arias, both with experience in the top flight, as well as midfielder Rafael Pellegrino who was one of the revelation players last season in Liga-2, being instrumental in the campaign of surprise package Libertad, who were on the verge of promotion. Out of the teams expected to be in the relegation struggle, Vaud were the side that brought the most players, and they will be hoping that fact will help them make the difference with the rest of their rivals.
The Pundit's Prediction: Vaud are looking like they will be a really hard nut to crack for every team in the league. They are capable enough to give some of the top teams a scare, but their real fight will be with Pumas and the matches against them will be the crucial ones in order to avoid an early return to Liga-2. 17th, relegation playoff winners.
Bohemians Metropolis:
Full Name: Bohemians Metropolis Football Club
Nicknames: Gallo (Rooster), Los Albiverdes (The White-Greens)
Stadium: Estadio Luis Frattini, Metropolis, District of Metropolis (Cap. 18,500)
Kit Sponsor: Heritage (Insurance)
Honours (0): None
Last Season: Valladar Liga-1: 10th - Kings' Shield: Round of 16
Average Attendance: 11,435
Starting Lineup (4-3-1-2): Ríos (C) - Dueñas, Hammond, Almeida, Howell - Navas, Moyes, Bastos - Correa - Vargas, Vasseur
Moves Out: Alain Barthez (AM, 25, VLD) to Centralis Heart (ETM)
Moves In: Felipe Correa (AM, 27, VLD) back from loan to Libertad
Commentary: A 10th place finish in the most recent season is yet another proof of the consolidation of Bohemians in the top tier. Coach Gilbert Favre has big merit on that achievement as he has managed to make the most of the resources available on his team and turn a side tipped to get relegated into a dangerous dark horse. The Gallo was another victim of the latest wave of emigration of Valladar players, as their flagship player Alain Barthez moved to Electrum to play in the highly-demanding Terranean League, however playmaker Felipe Correa is back from his spell at Libertad and will be Barthez' replacement this season, charged with the responsiblity of providing strikers Franco Vargas and Pierre Vasseur with assists. This season will be the moment to see whether Bohemians will be up to stay comfortably in mid-table for another season or finally try and push for qualification to an international berth. It will all depend on their efforts and Favre's ability to draw water from stones...
The Pundit's Prediction: The Gallo have managed to stay at the top tier with much comfort even though both of their pillars in recent campaigns have been lured by other stronger teams and left: first Brayan Borja and now Alain Barthez. Perhaps they will not have enough gas to compete for the Apertura, the Clausura or stay in the UICA race for too long but they'll continue safely away from the relegation battle. 14th.
Canalave Dragons:
Full Name: Canalave Dragons Football Club
Nicknames: The Dragons
Stadium: Dragon Stadium, City of Canalave, Canalave (Cap. 50,987)
Kit Sponsors: Mercantil Bank (Financial services), Canalave Port Authority (Port operation)
Honours (5): 1 Valladar Liga-1 title (Season 19), 3 Kings' Shields (KS 12, 14, 23), 1 Supercopa (SCV 11)
Last Season: Valladar Liga-1: 9th - Kings' Shield: Second round
Average Attendance: 29,047
Starting Lineup (4-4-2): McKinley - Moreira, Sánchez (C), Belfry, Cummings - Lambert, Silva, Morel, Vieira - Rose, Costa
Moves Out: Adrien Borges (FW, 25, VLD) to Helfin Fief (COS)
Moves In: John Rose (FW, 25, DUN) from Rose City (DUN), Chris Willis (FW, 20, VLD) promoted from Canalave Dragons U-19
Commentary: For the Dragons, last season was full of disappointment. A poor league performance, where the Canalase club failed to get anywhere close to a UICA berth, added to an early elimination from the Kings' Shield (which is the competition they usually excel at) and the departure of fan favourite Adrien Borges only because he was not of the liking of coach Bruno Mouche have angered the fans and piled up a lot of pressure on the team for this upcoming season. The arrival of the first player from Dunnes to play in Valladares in the shape of John Rose (brought especially to replace Borges and appease the fanbase) as well as the promotion of Chris Willis to the senior squad to join Ronald Vieira and Daniel Costa make us think that the Dragons will be in full offense mode for this upcoming season, but the truth is that the people around the team are already desperate for results. They want to win stuff or qualify for stuff, and they want both things now. The environment at Canalave will be really heavy (and hotter than usual) for this season...
The Pundit's Prediction: The Dragons have made an interesting wager by landing Dunnish striker John Rose, who should blend into the team's usual offensive mentality just fine. If Rose manages to make a quick adaptation to the city and the team, the Dragons will definitely be pushing to win either the Apertura, the Clausura, or a Globe Cup berth through the aggregate table, if none of these options work. They should also try to not get themselves blushed by minor teams in the earlier rounds of the Shield for a change (protip: the Shield is a quicker way to sneak into the GC...). 8th.
CAP:
Full Name: Club Atlético Popular de Los Chorros
Nicknames: Los Cuervos (The Ravens), Los Ediles (The Councillors)
Stadium: Estadio Municipal, Los Chorros, Mountbatten (Cap. 41,311)
Kit Sponsor: MAXI (Hypermarket)
Honours (0): None
Last Season: Valladar Liga-2: 1st (Champions) - Kings' Shield: Round of 32
Average Attendance: 9,292
Starting Lineup (5-4-1): Palacios - Suárez, Saucedo, Bollaert, Delima, Rodas - Quiñónez, Hoffmann (C), Montoya, Ospina - Bruin
Moves Out: Thiago Matheus (CB, 25, VLD) to Metropolis Alligators
Moves In: Theo Bollaert (CB, 23, VLD) on loan from AS Bezieres
Commentary: CAP are back to the Liga-1 after dominating the Liga-2 last season. The only loss for the team from Los Chorros ahead of this season is centreback Thiago Matheus, who rejected several offers from presitigious foreign teams to join Metropolis Alligators, to which CAP's Board reacted by bringing substitute CB Theo Bollaert from Bezieres. In order to avoid yet another short-lived stay in the top tier, Los Cuervos will be relying on their defense, led by goalkeeper Alexis Palacios and centreback Pedro Saucedo, while also hoping for striker Karl Bruin to make the most out of the chances they get through counterattacks. CAP will be looking to secure salvation at the end of the season by snatching some points off the "Big" teams as it used to be common practice for them as well as beating all of their rivals in the relegation struggle.
The Pundit's Prediction: CAP's main goal for this season will be fighting to avoid relegation, and they will give fight to the likes of Pumas, Vaud, and Edmonton to achieve that. However, their defensive approach and tactics might take their toll. 19th.
Deportivo Junín:
Full Name: Club Deportivo Junín
Nicknames: Los Granates (The Maroons), Los Orientales (The Easterners)
Stadium: Arena Junín, Ciudad de Junín (Cap. 43,394)
Kit Sponsors: Ortel (Telecommunications), Alcaldía de Junín (Local government), Atmochem (Petrochemicals)
Honours (3): 1 Valladar Liga-1 title (Season 49), 1 Kings' Shield (KS 43), 1 Rushmori Copa de Campeones (CdC 37)
Last Season: Valladar Liga-1: 8th - Kings' Shield: Round of 32
Average Attendance: 24,883
Starting Lineup (4-4-1-1): Fernández - Castrillón, Marín, Rojas, Fresquet (C) - Pasquel, Otero, Padilla, Stokes - Drea - Valencia
Moves Out: Derek Young (RB, 31, ETM) as free agent, Joel Klein (LM, 32, ETM) as free agent
Moves In: Elkin González (RB, 20, VLD) promoted from Deportivo Junín U-19, Sergio Caballero (LM, 20, VLD) promoted from Deportivo Junín U-19
Commentary: Last season, the Granates were one match away from a return to an international final after losing to Ulsa in the Cup Winners' Cup semifinals and were able to stage a decent comeback which even had them with an outside chance of finishing in fifth place in Liga-1 and a possible return to the Globe Cup, events which were convincing enough for the club's Board to renew their endorsement to the project led by coach Victor Anigo and former NT star Jean-Pierre de Roux for this upcoming season. Deportivo Junín have shocked everyone in this off-season by announcing that they would be parting ways with Electrumite players Derek Young and Joel Klein, both important players in the Eastern squad. Although both players reported personal issues as the reason for their departure, some media in Junín reported that it was part of Anigo's plan to purge the roster and pave the way for squad renovation, as 20-year olds Elkin González and Sergio Caballero were promoted to the main squad in their replacement. The Granates, now led by Euran and Chromatik midfielders Jim Stokes and Willard Drea as their main international stars, will be looking to return to the international stage by aiming at a fourth or fifth place finish in the league, or another Kings' Shield victory...whichever way they choose will be appreciated by the Juninese population, who are starting to grow more and more passionate about their team.
The Pundit's Prediction: Once again, Deportivo Junín will be part of the "UICA hopefuls" group, fighting against Bezieres, TFC, the Stars, and the Dragons for a possible Globe Cup berth. The departure of their Electrumite players as well as the reinforcements for the rest of the sides involved might leave the Granates behind in that race, so maybe focusing on the Kings' Shield (or trying to win either the Apertura or the Clausura) could be a safer bet for them. 10th.
Edmonton United:
Full Name: Edmonton United Football Club
Nicknames: The Monties, The Blue-Blacks
Stadium: Albert Field, Edmonton, Westlands (Cap. 20,000)
Kit Sponsor: Ferroni (Food processing)
Honours (6): 1 Valladar Liga-1 title (Season 29), 4 Kings' Shields (KS 8, 26, 28, 33), 1 Supercopa (SCV 14)
Last Season: Valladar Liga-1: 12th - Kings' Shield: Third round
Average Attendance: 14,614
Starting Lineup (4-4-2): Herner - Machado, Lama, Bélanger, Salazar - Miller, Ramírez, Allister, Turnbull - Arrú, Jonferth (C)
Moves Out: None
Moves In: None
Commentary: Although a twelfth place isn't really considered much of an achievement, considering Edmonton's standards and performance in recent times it is worth a lot. The Monties were expected to be fighting for their life until the end but managed to string a nice streak of consecutive wins and sealed their top flight status with relative comfort as a result. Given that the team stays the same from last season, and still guided by the experience of Cosumarite striker Delwyth Jonferth, for the upcoming Edmonton will be hoping for a higher finish in the aggregate table which allows them to stay away from relegation, and who knows, they might try and clinch an international berth while they're at it: they've got a relatively young side but far more experienced compared to last season, a more benign system of play...and a fanbase to lure again as the attendance averages at Albert Field keep falling every season...
The Pundit's Prediction: Edmonton have managed to be safe from relegation for several seasons already with varied formulas: first by using experienced players, then a mixture of experience and youth, and now mostly young players. However, they are unlikely to repeat last season's campaign since they declined to reinforce themselves unlike some other smaller teams such as Ajax or Bohemians. They will still be able to avoid relegation in comfortable fashion, though...15th.
Eterna Stars:
Full Name: Eterna Stars Football Club
Nicknames: The Stars, The Yellows
Stadium: Alain Tramontin Stadium, Eterna City, Eterna (Cap. 60,207)
Kit Sponsor: Hipinito (Soft drinks)
Honours (5): 2 Valladar Liga-1 titles (Seasons 2, 20), 2 Kings' Shields (KS 1, 22), 1 Supercopa (SCV 28)
Last Season: Valladar Liga-1: 6th - Kings' Shield: Second round
Average Attendance: 46,195
Starting Lineup (4-3-3): Cross - Serrate, Mackarin, Holmes, Waldo (C) - Sierra, Castillo, Rengifo - Fagundes, Mehdizade, Germain
Moves Out: Alexander Casierra (FW, 24, VLD) to Galatica (PAS)
Moves In: None
Commentary: Despite the Stars failed to achieve their goals of qualifying for international competition last season, they were able to end in a respectable sixth place at the end of the season while also showing some interesting things in their squad: a powerful partnership up front with Chromatik striker Aide Mehdizade and Valladar counterparts Peter Fagundes and Valentin Germain, with Mehdizade being the team's top scorer as well as one of the Liga-1 best players, as well as a solid defense led by NT goalkeeper Alan Cross, which had the least goals conceded in the league with just 36 goals against. In this season, the Stars will be hoping to capitalize on these strong spots in order to return to a UICA competition, and now that the season will be split into Apertura and Clausura tournaments they will surely have higher odds of achieving that goal than in a single long tournament.
The Pundit's Prediction: The Stars have set their goal on winning either the Apertura or the Clausura in order to qualify for the Champions' Cup without depending on the aggregate table. And that's the best course of action in order to avoid being involved in another tough battle with their usual rivals for the last Globe Cup spot, especially now that there are going to be only two berths awarded through the aggregate table, instead of the usual four. 7th.
Étoile Verte:
Full Name: Club Sportif Étoile Verte de Bezieres
Nicknames: Les Verts (The Greens), L'Étoile (The Star)
Stadium: Stade de Charmilliot, Bezieres, Foix (Cap. 13,000)
Kit Sponsor: Triangle Électronique (Home appliances)
Honours (1): 1 Kings' Shield (KS 29)
Last Season: Valladar Liga-2: 6th, Liga-2 Final Playoffs Winner (Promoted) - Kings' Shield: Round of 16
Average Attendance: 9,039
Starting Lineup (4-1-4-1): Ospina - Galtier, Rouzet, Bakvis, Haroche - Magnin (C), Herivaux, Boisbriand, Vaughan - Bernardi - Forlán
Moves Out: None
Moves In: None
Commentary: Étoile Verte are the last team promoted from Liga-2 for this season, by dramatically sneaking into the final playoff spot on the last matchday and once there beating theoretically stronger sides such as Stanford United in the semifinals and surprise package Libertad on penalties in the final. Les Verts, commanded by coach Gustavo Franco for some time, have given continuity to their squad, led by midfielder Pierre Magnin, who has consolidated himself as team captain, and Nuevo Caracas-born striker Gustavo Forlán, who has naturalised himself as a Valladar citizen after some time of being playing in Valladares, and will be looking forward to stay in the top tier for more than one season by relying on the experience provided by Magnin and goalkeeper Andrés Ospina, and the talent of both Forlán and playmaker Raymond Bernardi at the front. The second team from Bezieres will have some stiff competition in the relegation race but they are confident they've got enough weapons to avoid the drop.
The Pundit's Prediction: Out of the three promoted sides, Étoile Verte look as the weakest one, especially given by the fact that there was no movement in and out of the team and the roster remains unchanged. Perhaps it is a competitive roster for Liga-2 standards, but Liga-1 will be a whole new level for them. 20th.
