okay, so I'm new to NS sports, this'll be my first post made on this subforum in fact. I was thinking, everyone's done threads for stuff like, football, soccer, basketball, baseball, etc. but very few people have done one for horse racing. now, we can't start right now, but as soon as I find a scorinator, signups will open. the way it works is, you signup your horse *sheet below* then we scorinate them. then I TG the winner to one of the two nations racing, then they RP the race and lossing or winning.

A season of horse racing was done a few months ago, and seemed to attract a fair amount of interest. However, one question you haven't answered is how will you generate scores?

Say what?

If you want to do this, then fine. But don't say something like the above when you don't know if it had actually been done. It was, and was quite successful.

Newmanistan, your original post on this thread did not need to be so aggressive. All you had to do was point out the link and say that Delaclava was right that there was a previous season.

If Phonencia acts like it never happened or that he or she has a better idea no matter what, that might be a different story.

Er... I'd be more than interested, if a scorinator could be used, not this "I could review your horses impartially" sh*t."

Um... yeah I did. As Newministan stated, he ran a league (a leauge that I had horses participate in, one of which I think was crowned one of the champions for a certain category), but he did, indeed use a scorinator... So perhaps ask him for one. You could also create one in excel.

You know, one of the things I sometimes find disappointing about NS Sport is the way established nations sometimes - only sometimes - get all aggressively proprietorial when a new participant comes along with a reasonably good, albeit flawed, idea and jump on them to the extent that they may be discouraged from ever coming back to the forum again.

For God's sake people, relax. We want to encourage participation, not jump down someone's throat because they're not intimately familiar with established NS Sport practice.

Phonencia may have made some mistakes in his OP regarding past events and scorination, but - as Sarzonia has noted - that's no reason for a couple of you to to be so accusatory. Delaclava's post was far more constructive.

In the meantime....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Phonencia, WELCOME TO NS SPORT! I'm sorry your first experience here hasn't been quite as positive as you might have hoped, but the other nations posting in your thread have raised some very good points regarding your event, even if they haven't always been entirely constructive in doing so.

First of all, it's not the first horse racing event. That doesn't mean you can't have a Phonencian Derby, though! We often have local sports events running alongside international ones. But you should be careful to edit your OP to make it clear that you're not claiming that this is the first ever NS Sport horse-racing event.

In terms of generating scores, you've taken on board that this is important, but like many new participants seem to be finding it a little confusing. We do have a thread where you can ask OOC questions about scorination, and there are many friendly, helpful nations there who'll be happy to give you advice about this aspect of NS Sport. Go to:

http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=55249

It's not a sticky, though, which is why it's not always easy to find!

Note that you're not required to use an Excel or Java-based scorinator system, but it's far more likely - especially if you're new to this forum - that your event will be a success if you do.

It looks like you've already read some of the stickies at the top of the page, but if you have any further questions, one of the stickies is a general sport RP question thread, which is also often checked by friendly, helpful nations.

And one final tip: you should never assume that we haven't had an event before; why, we've even had a championship for watching paint dry. Seriously. So it's always worth asking first.

No need for Google hounds. Just follow this link, as posted above:

http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=55249

Then ask if anyone can recommend a scorinator for horseracing. I have no doubt that you'll get some good advice there.

As I've already stated, Newministand likely has a scorinator for horse racing... :meh:

Sarzonia & Arch: When you have spent over I'd say 100 hours in doing something, with much effort with every second that had gone into it; and then someone walked into your room where you completed the activity and said it had never had been done, wouldn't you be offended? You don't have to answer that, just think about that, please. I stand by my posts and the tone in which they were written. I did not feel I was "rude", though yes, I was offended, because my work was offended.

Now, as for the scorinator. It will not be provided to anyone. Sorry, if Horse Racing is run in the matter it was done before, it will be by me. Sorry again, but I am well within my rights to keep it in my wallet, if you will.

You're entitled to feel that way. However, the tone of your post was neither productive, nor welcome.

The only thing that needed to be said was what Delaclava did, which was that a previous horse racing competition took place. The kind of snark you responded with is the sort of behaviour that causes some people to leave NS Sports and not want to come back.

I'm not looking for you to apologise to Phonencia or Arch. I'm not even looking for you to give your scorinator to anyone else. Just try to act with a bit more maturity and a bit more tact.

Newmanistan, please relax. Phonencia didn't mean anything by it, he just had never seen horse racing done here (the horse racing WAS completed several months ago, and I wouldn't expect anyone to dive into the 15th or 20th page just to check). It's perfectly harmless. So jumping on him in the way you did when he wasn't trying to offend you or your work is completely unwarranted. So let's ease up here, and just forget it. There is no further discussion needed about the statement in question. EDIT: Looks like Sarz beat me to it. But yeah, pretty much what he said.

Although I completely agree, it should be noted that if you type "horse racing" into the search forum thread, they're are several mentions of Newministans season within the first two pages... I'm not saying the way Newministan or I reacted was appropriate (especially me...), but I would take offense if someone came along, especially a n00b (no offense) and said something has never been done before. It's just a natural reaction, especially when someone has put a lot of time and effort into it. That'd be like someone coming along and they wanted to create the NS tennis leauge because one doesn't exist. Naturallly, I'd kind of flip out. It's nothing personal, it's just that people like to have their efforts noticed, ya know?

And transitioning back onto topic, again, I'd be totally intretsed but I don't see how you can get many experienced players in this race if you don't have an adequate scorinator. I'd be more than happy to help you with a scorinator if I knew how to make one, but alas, I only know how to plug and chug with scorinators. :?

Exactly and using "search" isn't unreasonable if I was checking to see if something had been done before. And now I am done here.

This.

I'm neither looking for nor asking for anyone to apologise. I just find myself entertaining the optimistic hope that established nations can react with a little maturity and try and help new participants in NS Sport, even where they might accidentally step on toes, rather than act in an increasingly petulant and unhelpful manner.

i take back everything I muttered under my breath about the mods. and you know, it's not like I was running around screaming about how no one ever did a racing thred before. I said that It appeared no one much had done one so I wanted to do one. *sigh* I should've stayed in II and NS.

I do hope that you don't find this experience too discouraging, and that you do stick around NS Sport. I am sorry if this has been overly negative for you.

Perhaps it might help to sign up for one of the existing events? That'll give you a stronger feel for how things are traditionally done around here, and give you some useful hands-on experience of NS Sport RP. It is often very different from II and NS.
