The Big Shiny Trophy: Congratulations to...?

Postby The Babbage Islands » Sat Aug 28, 2010 4:10 am

Chronowire Communications and Belgium Sport GmbH

present the

Big Shiny Trophy

Introduction

The Big Shiny Trophy is a single-elimination association football (soccer) tournament for professional football clubs (not national teams).  It is designed to have a completely different feel from the long-running TakilQuip Champions' Cup, Globe Cup, and Chronowire Series B Champions' Cup administered by UICA. The BST features one match every three to four days, heavy emphasis on RP, and a chance to build club identities.

Signups are open until seven days after the last whistle of the World Cup finals. Pairings will be posted on the next following Monday or Friday, whichever comes first. First scorination follows three or four days later as noted under Scorination.

EDIT: The entry deadline is now established as Sunday, 19 September. Pairings will be posted on Monday the 20th. First-round ties will scorinate on Friday the 24th and Monday the 27th, and on we go.

Entry

Each club must post at minimum a default starting lineup of eleven players to enter the tournament.  An optional style modifier from +5 (most offensively-oriented) to -5 (most defensively-oriented) may be included. Rosters can be bare-bones or elaborate, and may include additional players, coaches, kit designs, home stadia, and other material.  Each roster is scored for one round of roleplay bonus (see Roleplay) separately from other tournament roleplays.

A single controller is limited to four clubs total. Each nation is limited to a maximum of two clubs.

A roleplay permissions box, to guide your opponents and others in treating your team, is recommended as part of your roster.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:

Choose my goalscorers Y/N
Godmod scoring events Y/N
RP injuries to my players Y/N
Godmod injuries to my players Y/N
Hand out yellow cards to my players Y/N
Hand out red cards to my players Y/N
Godmod other events Y/N

Format

The competition is a straightforward cup, using two-legged ties home-and-home below the quarterfinals and single matches on neutral pitches for the final eight.  A third-place match will be played on the same scorination as the final.

  • Two quarterfinals, their associated semifinal, and the championship match will be held at the new Memorial Park (capacity 42,357) in Belgium, Daimler, home pitch of FFB Premier League powerhouse Belgium FC.
  • Two quarterfinals, their associated semifinal, and the third-place match will be held at historic Badenstadion (capacity 50,007) in Baden, Daimler, home to FFB Premier League sides Viktoria Baden and Baden 98.

The sixteen highest-rated clubs (see Ratings) will be drawn into the bracket tennis-style, so none of these teams can meet before the round of 16. Otherwise, all pairings and all first-round byes are awarded at random.

Scorination

If the Miscellanator football module is available as either a beta or a public release, it will be used. Otherwise, NSFS version 2.7 will be used with style modifiers halved (effective range +/- 2.5).

Each match will be scorinated shortly after 1200 UTC.  Scorinations take place only twice per week, on Monday and Friday.  This means that each round lasts for one week (two matches per tie) until the quarterfinals are attained.

Roleplay

Roleplays will be graded on a five-tiered scale, and scores will be assigned based on quality. A club can earn a maximum of five KPB points per match. Multiple roleplays preceding one match (Exception: roster) will be assessed together for one score.

Note that it's possible for any club to max the roleplay bonuses on just two roleplays a week.

Ratings

Clubs with UICA coefficients use the following conversion table.

Code: Select all
If UICA is:        Then estimated KPB is:
0.000 to 8.000     Full UICA coefficient + 1/8 of the nation's current KPB rating.
8.001 to 24.000    8 + 1/2 (UICA-8) + 1/8 national KPB
24.001 to 48.000   16 + 1/3 (UICA-24) + 1/8 national KPB
48.001 to 80.000   24 + 1/4 (UICA-48) + 1/8 national KPB
80.001 to 120.000  32 + 1/5 (UICA-80) + 1/8 national KPB
120.001 and up     40 + 1/6 (UICA-120) + 1/8 national KPB

Clubs without UICA coefficients receive a rating equal to 1/8 of their nation's most recently-published KPB ranking.

Decay

After each round (pair of matches) before the quarterfinals the accumulated sum of rating and roleplay will be halved for every club.  This will place progressively greater importance on roleplay as the event goes on.

Integration

This tournament does not affect anyone's rating anywhere. If the tournament becomes a regular event, it will be timed to start shortly after each World Cup final.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. If it's your club, I'm OK with you entering it. I will probably enter the Lontorikan team FV Harmonie, which is 100% owned by a TBI consortium but plays in Geleling in the Lontorikan Oberliga under the Paripana Sporting Council . . . ie in another user's nation.

In other words, I'll be pretty easy-going on odd cases. After all, nobody's getting KPB/UICA/PDQ points, just some Big Shiny Trophy. Should two or more controllers lay claim to the same club I'll deal with that as it comes.

The Osarian Football Association has opted to send the second and third ranked teams from last season's King's League - as the reigning Champions, Firewood City, have applied for participation in the Aeropag Invitational again - to represent the nation in the Big Shiny Trophy. Fittingly, Burningham City represent the driven mentality of Osarian football, and their counter-attacking style is popular with crowds. Meanwhile Turic represent the physical, aggressive offensive nature of Osarian football, with their triangular passing formations and tough-tackling defenders.

Sir George Pennant's Burningham City side have been perrenial title contenders for the past twenty five years, and show no sign of slipping under his stewardship. Pennant likes to build from the back, so he has a slew of talented defenders at his disposal, often choosing to pair the experienced Melvyn Shahar with a younger partner - most often Balidian Mathew Scos. Pennant's attitude toward age in his players suggests that Tracy will be getting more chances soon, and the young Balidian will need to make the most of this tournament if he intends to put pressure on the club captain. The side's main weaknesses are their lack of any consistant, standout forwards other than the aging Kryosi, Caspian Reyale. This tournament will be a good chance for the likes of McNeill, Almerique and Lawrence to step up and prove to the boss they have what it takes to lead the line next season.

Karl Heinz-Grichenbauer is known as one of the most tactically astute managers in the King's League. And rightly so. His teams play a flexible, 5-man midfield formation, and rely heavily on the presence of two creative players in the middle and an enforcer behind them. At the back, he leaves organisation to his trusted lieutenant on the pitch - team captain and national team veteran Tay Gidds. Since the departure of Rhianna Johnson, Turic have struggled up front, however, the signing of Aalnordhavn's promising under-21 striker Kjærsgaard, as well as the emergence of Salamo Suarez, have provided some potency ahead of the prolific midfield maestro, Gremio. However, being youngsters, they rely heavily on support from the midfield, particularly the wingers. Late last season the Alonso twins emerged as a formidable central pairing, and it is expected that they will see a lot of playing time in this tournament.

I was asking whether you ICly invited national champions, winners of the national cup, winners of the nanticals, teams your administration likes, on FCFS basis... so I can ICly justify why it is these 2 clubs which make it to the tournament...

Edit: seeing that this is all random, I will send H2SR team and XTSR winner Maheris Maru. The roster will follow.

Woodstock Wild wishes to enter the competition.

Roster to follow soon.

Manager: Kendall Bryant, 41, fourth season with Woodstock, 11th season overall
Bryant served as assistant manager for the Wild as the team fell just short of championship glory in the Sarzonia Cup. He was Matt Gregory's right hand man for five seasons as the Wild won two Sarzonia Football Confederation championships and three Sarzonia Cups.
Assistant Manager: Ted Dunlap, 64, fourth season with Woodstock; 36th season overall
Dunlap came out of three years of retirement to serve as assistant manager for Bryant, who played for Dunlap in semipro action. Dunlap will install the team's defensive schemes.
Goalkeeper Coach: Brian Tawes, 43, fourth season
Tawes recently stopped playing for a semipro team, but has had time with the Under 21 team, the senior national team and Sarzonia's short-lived futsal programme. He is known as a patient instructor, but doesn't have tolerance for people who don't listen.

Goalkeepers
14 Thomas Nolan
Formerly with Delaclava Premier League franchise Cavalry, the reserve on the Delaclav national team is a starter with the Wild.

Defenders
2 Brendon Discoll, 6'2, 205 pounds
Discoll, 27, still has great speed, but has gained considerably in discipline thanks to expert coaching.
5 Jeff D'Amitri, 6'4 220 pounds
Another physical player, the 28-year-old D'Amitri is far more likely to draw cautions than Maxwell is, and possesses less ability with headers. However, his ball skills are strong enough to lead a counter-attack when he wins possession of balls in his end.
8 John Collins, D, 5'11, 170 pounds
Collins, 23, has the speed that most of the bigger defenders on this team lack. Worked extensively with a personal trainer to gain some physical strength to improve his game.
9 Spencer Hicks, D, 6' 180 pounds
Eager to reclaim his reputation on the national team, the 33-year-old joined the Wild after a trade with the Rochester Rogues. He still brings his extremely physical play to the table and has made the Wild into a team that the less assertive teams are reluctant to face.
19 Dave Spencer 6'5", 225 pounds
Big and brawny, Spencer also plays a rather physical style that can knock midfielders and forwards off their game. Added to the squad in an effort to address The Holy Empire's physical style of play from the previous World Cup.

Midfielders
3 Mark Cundiff 5'11, 175 pounds
Rugged, but clean, he often serves in a defensive midfield role but can also play the offensive midfielder role if called upon. His versatility with the Woodstock Wild earned him the call up to the big club.
6 Colin Rudolph, M 6'2", 215 pounds - Team captain
Rudolph, 29, has taken to his new role as the Wild's team captain by serving as a more vocal leader. He tends to wait his turn to become a leader, but has frequently led by example even when he wasn't wearing the armband. He usually plays on the right flank.
10 Cody Myers, 6'2, 190 pounds
Myers, 25, has been the playmaking midfielder for the team ever since earning a trip to the starting 11. He usually relies on ball skills, but he will mix it up if he has to.
11 Nate Simone, M 5'9, 155 pounds
Simone, 27, is the left flank player for the Wild, and usually is the designated left-footed free kick and corner taker for the team.
16 George Morrison 6'2 185 pounds
Drafted out of Joe Gibbs University, Morrison, 25, played for the Nicksia Knights in the SFC until he signed with KT Hotspur in Candelaria and Marquez. He is not a particularly pacey player, but has a cannon of a left leg. He will likely be substituted for a player with more flair if the Stars are trailing a match.

Forwards
12 Micah Thompson, 6'1, 203 pounds
He brings a perfect combination of "ups", physical strength and ball skill to the table. The 20-year-old needs to work on his match fitness, but once he can consistently log 90 minutes or more, he'll likely be a starter with the Wild for years to come.
13 John Cullen, 5'11, 180 pounds
Cullen plays a withdrawn forward and can play midfield if Woodstock is trying to protect a lead or goes down a man. Scored 11 goals on the season, including three matches during which the 26-year-old was a target player.
4 Jethro Marks, F 6'5, 215 pounds
He's big, but he's also fast. In addition, the 25-year-old has a cannon for a right leg.

Aniporo will send the current Liga Ein champions, FC Jabay, to The Big Shiny Trophy tournament.

FC Jabay

Manager: Alfonso Malinho
Formation: 4-4-2 Diamond
Style:+2

The greatest club in Liga Ein history with 17 league championships and 10 Leader's Cups, FC Jabay had hid a rough patch for awhile until the arrival of Manager Alfonso Malinho from his native Canfundeu and the sons of two FC Jabay legends: Dario Navarro Sanchez (son of Laurence Sanchez, greatest plaer in FC Jabay and Aniporo history ever) and Milo Von Stubbs-Koenig (nephew of former 3 time champion manager Maxi Von Stubbs). Those two, along with the surprisingly exciting and efficient attacking football that the club had become so used to stopping was now their forte and for the 18th and 11th time, FC Jabay were the champions of Liga Ein and the Leader's Cup. It was this dominating season (18-1-1) by Malinho's All-Aniporo FC Jabay side that led to the FAF creating the Aniporo national team. Now, Malinho and FC Jabay attempt to prove themselves internationally in the Big Shiny Trophy tournament as well as test out some new players, domestic and foreign.

How much experience would I need with NS soccer RP to join?

e.g. Would this be appropriate for a first NS RP (I have RP experience though)?

Sure, join right in. I expect this tournament to draw a mix of newer nations and veterans. Because the tournament will not start until a week after the World Cup ends, figure that the first match should be close to a month away. (Time to build a cool field!)

Belgium FC

The home-town favourites Belgium FC are the reigning champions of the FFB Premier League and winners of three consecutive titles. Ranked #87 in the world by UICA, they have advanced to the knockout stage of the last two Globe Cups. They play at the newly-constructed Memorial Park (42,357) on the waterfront in Belgium.

Style: +3, favouring the attack but not consumed by it.
Formation: 4-4-2.

Goalkeepers

1 Allison Salamida (Cassadaigua) is a World Cup Hall of Fame goalkeeper who remains one of the world's best in her mid-thirties. She started in goal for Cassadaigua in both World Cup championship runs.
11 Bill Shelton (TBI, age 28) is a journeyman keeper who is amazed to be here and committed to learning from a legend of his craft.

Defenders

8 Tracie Poulin (Cassadaigua) has been used recently as a sweeper in an experimental shift on defence. She's been feeling the heat from Thornton and Arna-Maggra lately, but there's no substitute for the seasoning behind two World Cup rings.
43 Kimo Umafu'alafa (Andossa Se Mitrin Vega)
54 Timo Umafu'alafa (Andossa Se Mitrin Vega)
Both Kimo and Timo are big on defence. Really big. Over two metres or seven feet big. The brothers form a large mobile wall that dampen many attacking ambitions.
31 Arna-Maggra o Wirenne (Bears Armed) is the first Ursine to play in The Babbage Islands, and she originally struggled with being far from home. But of late her startling quickness has reasserted itself.
3 Harvey Thornton (TBI, age 24) is battling for starting time, especially with Arna-Maggra. It didn't keep him off the Babbage Olympic squad; he wouldn't be consigned to bench in most clubs.
4 Kenneth Macleod (TBI, age 26) is a role-player. He may never go much higher but is enjoying his time with a top side.

Midfielders

7 Shannon Myers (Cassadaigua) is a skilled and inspirational midfielder tending to the playmaker's role with flair. She is widely known as team blogger for the Cassadaigua national team.
10 Kelli Alder (TBI, age 25) prefers the attacking midfield but, like her mentor Tegan Nash, can play all over the pitch. With over 70 caps and a league scoring title her future is limitless.
26 Rachel Conti (Cassadaigua) is captain of Belgium FC. In a side teeming with bigger names, this would seem surprising. But Conti has captained "B" squads for her homeland in international play, and has blossomed as a leader here.
22 Alexander Roch (The Weegies) is young, gifted, and abrasive. Roch was a teen sensation for The Weegies in World Cup 50 but was inexplicably dropped for WC 51.
5 Jacqueline Parker (TBI, age 25) is a likely transfer candidate to an established first-division club where she could start in her prime years.
17 Neil Butler (TBI, age 21) is fresh out of the Engineering College of Daimler, where he starred on a championship team. Look for him to either rise to a starting role or bring in some transfer edisons.

Attackers

20 Jeremy McAllister Jr (Newmanistan) was a legendary player for the late, lamented Sporting Lakeport and the Newmanistan Rockets. His greatest days may be behind him. Yet as he turns 40 he still remains deadly in the box.
25 Cassie Dayton (Cassadaigua) and her bubbly enthusiasm pair nicely with McAllister's veteran serenity up front. They both scored the same number of goals last season, two behind Alder for the league lead.
19 Gavin Williams (Eastfield Lodge) is nearly a generation younger than McAllister, but is widely regarded as his heir apparent partnering Dayton.
2 Walter Johnson (TBI, age 20) is definitely the fourth forward on a tough depth chart, but he's a young talent on a strong side with a bright future.

Manager: Averill Robinson is a former captain of The Babbage Islands who won 38 caps in his career. He played sixteen seasons in goal for West Scoville Tigers.

Owners: Chip and Kirsten Woods started out in sport as rivals, finishing 1-2 in the first NSSCRA world stock car championships. Kirsten, a Cassadaigua native, is the football expert of the couple. Chip, born and raised in Belgium, takes the lead role with their racetrack. Both are savvy in business and yet are willing to spend freely for the best. They have two children, Michael and Courtney, who are fixtures around the club.

RP Permissions: I will determine the severity of any injuries to my players beyond the current match. Please do not godmod or issue red cards to my players without checking first. No other limitations.

Wild Football Club

Wild F.C. is a privately owned Tyrrinian Football Club.

They are one of the worst in their league, but Siam Meow, an enterprising dictator hailing from Vortiaganica, is hoping this will be his first of many successful business ventures.

As such, he is wanting to fund their departure to a foreign nation to play.

They prefer the 4-4-2 formation.

Marcus Ash Striker (Traditionally the club's best scorer by FAR)
Gregory Cooper Striker (Traditionally the club's second best scorer by VERY far)
Toni Ketill Striker
Gilbert Andel Striker
Breno Leif Striker
Gabriel Barclay Midfielder
George Gislin Midfielder
Claus Brooks Midfielder (CAPTAIN)
Nikolas Sigvard Midfielder
Cristophe Yarden Midfielder
Rudolph Kamala Midfielder
Anan Hameed Midfielder
Marcelo Rochus Midfielder
Hugo Jan Defender
Alfred Laurus Defender
Casey Sampson Defender
Ezio Tormod Defender
Brian Nenad Defender
Uri Demyan Defender
Ozzie Carol Defender
Mario Ingi Defender
Clint Kare Keeper
David Fabien Keeper

The team is notoriously aggressive, being from a crime-ridden impoverished area within Tyrrin. They don't get much respect and their fans are fairly lack-lustre, as is their home-pitch.

(They have an NSwiki page : http://www.nswiki.net/index.php?title=Wild_FC)

Except in the Olympics, at this point virtually all football tournaments in NS Sports are mixed-gender. Some teams remain all-male; a couple of prominent sides are all-female. (And a few teams aren't even human. :) )

I've decided to switch to a team that my dictator owns privately, which functions in the Tyrrin Champions' league.

Whilst apparently Tyrrin is a fairly good national team, Wild FC is, to put it nicely, a blemish. It is the third worst team in the league (20 teams), and the two worst are military clubs.

We are attempting to try and bring them to international promise, and hopefully someday they will function as an outlet for our promising football players (who currently are shunned by rich people who can afford cricket bats and hockey sticks).

(Yes, we have actually bought them from Tyrrin. We are not THAT new to RP.)

A player list already exists, I just need to put it up here.

Schialtas Niaghuan (The Soft Breeze of Midnight), as Weegie Premiership champions, have been granted permission by the WFA to participate in The Big Shiny Trophy, if accepted.

Schialtas Niaghuan accepts that anything may happen during a game of football, as long as it is appropriately sanctioned in game, if need be.

Manager: Andrew Winters, 34

The Midnighters, as they are known, have only recently become a force to be reckoned with in Weegie football after manager Andrew Winters took charge and immediately began to utilise an array of young talent, all born in or near the city where the club's stadium, Cinaldh Feortas (The Old Fort), is located. Schialtas is proud of its' roots and the team has usually been made up primarily of locals, with one or two "other-islanders" if need be.

Winters, however, considered that the current crop of youngsters had a special something about them, and so it has proved; Schialtas has won two Weegie Premierships in a row, and the current team have shown an attacking flair and skillful technique which is somewhat alien to Weegie football, which generally places a certain physicality and direct approach over a short-passing game. The current team is considered possibly the best exponent of Weegie football worldwide, although they have not, so far, shone in international competition, which Winters puts down to inexperience. Due to their attacking, free-flowing play, placing great store on midfield dominance, they have become known as the Mairnísdha (Beautiful Team).

They play in a very wide 4-5-1 formation. However, this formation has considerable fluidity and can be greatly modified. The wingers often play well up front as extra forwards and is where a significant portion of the attacking threat comes from, making it closer to a 4-3-3. The wing-backs can also threaten significantly, opening up space where possible and pressurising the opposing team's defensive line. When pressed, the midfield can collapses in to reinforce the defense when necessary. Above all, the team relies on midfield possession and pressure to deny the opposing team goalscoring opportunities and, if possible, smash through the opposing defense.

The Midnighters wear a black shirt which has a gradient into dark blue around two-thirds of the way down, and dark blue shorts and socks. The bolded team is the most likely starters, although there are many in the team (Branch, Shelley, Galbraith, Pelham) who are considered close if not equal in talent to the starters.

AS Bezieres, one of the most important and representative teams in recent seasons in Valladares, and reigning Valladar Super League champions, wishes to enter the competition with the aim of improving their performance at international level, as well as help its younger players earn some experience.

Some Facts About the Team:

Full Name: Association Sportive de Bezieres
Nickname (s): "Les Rouges" (The Reds), "Les Démons" (The Devils), "Le ASB" (The ASB)
Stadium: Stade Jules Picot, Bezieres, Foix (Cap. 38,000)
Sponsor (s): InterRail (rail company), Hydro-Foix (hydropower company)
Home Kit: Red shirt and white shorts
Away Kit: All white
Third/GK Kit: Green shirt and black shorts
Chairman: Rèmy de Saint-Lorent
Executive Manager (Director of Football): Luis da Lima
Current UICA Rank: 80th - 28.540 points (as of TQCC 25)

A Closer View on the Team:

AS Bezieres, mainly nicknamed "Les Rouges", did not become an important team in Valladares until the fifth season of the Valladar Super League. Before that season, Les Rouges were the typical mid-table team, not so bad but not so good either, and during these four seasons the team never appeared among the Top-10, nor qualified to a semifinal stage, which were monopolized by Metropolis Alligators, Eterna Stars, Tannenberg FC, Marinos Metropolis and Slateport Bulls. Before the fifth season's kickoff, Rèmy de Saint-Lorent, an important businessman in the public sector field, bought the team to its former owners, renewing completely their squad and goals, in order to make it one of the most important teams in the nation.

Under Saint-Lorent's ownership, who brought to the team one of the most experienced coaches in the nation, Yves Rexach, Bezieres soon went from being a wildcard to be a competitive team that was always fighting in the top places. Rexach, who had won two Super League championships with Metropolis Alligators before being appointed as coach of Bezieres, relied on a mix of experienced players with high quality young players, coming out of the battered team's young squads. Soon, Rexach and this "new" Bezieres managed to clinch the qualifying spot to the Aeropag Football Invitational, in where eventually they were placed in sixth place, the highest placement ever done for a valladar team there until the date. Although Eterna Stars were the first valladar team to compete in a group stage of the Globe Cup, Bezieres were the first valladar team to reach the knockout rounds of that tournament, adding another golden page to their successful era. The Super League title in the last season was the only achievement this team lacked in order to enter to the "Big Teams Club".

Bezieres is known among the 20 teams in the Valladar Super League for being an offensive team (maybe the most offensive team in the league), playing with an offensive 4-3-3 formation, which can vary during the match, depending on the situation. This team tries to exert pressure over their rivals since the first minute, controlling the ball and preventing their rivals to do some harm with it. The wings, with Cédric Lamont and Patrick Hardy, will also create danger, and the team's counterattacks are lethal. Rexach has adapted this formation for several situations in the match, specially those when the team is not in possession of the ball. When the opposing team is in possession of the ball, the three midfielders will move back in order to reinforce the defense, take the ball from the opponent and pass it quickly to the forwards, creating those quick and lethal counterattacks that have made this team famous. In summary, the midfield is the mainstay of this team, since depending on the situation the team is facing during the matches, the midfielders will either move back or move forward to strengthen one area or another.
