As is the convention, 2 points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss. For tiebreakers (hereafter 'points' means points scored in a game e.g. 4 for a try, not earned for a result e.g. 2 for a win): i) points difference; ii) total points for; iii) number of wins; iv) head-to-head results; v) head-to-head points difference; vi) head-to-head total points for.

Scorination

Scorination will be done every two days at 21:00 UTC from the 4th of August. I will use Starblaydia's rugby scorinator, which seems to work exceptionally well, giving fair and realistic scores. RP bonus' will be high.

I will use my Rugby League World Rankings and add the RP bonus to these.

The Vonghurst Star
Roster not out yet... Oh and group predictions.

TWhether it's top tier professional sports, amateur competitions, recreation or simply a means of keeping their wasteline in check, it's safe to say that sport is something that many Virabis hold dear. Thus, it might be a little odd to some that Virabia has only won one major sporting title and that is the Sixth Rugby League World Cup. Now sure, the country has only been on the international scene for sports for something 7 almost 8 years but, you'd think the country would have at least won something else but, they haven't. Which means that those who took the prize all those years ago are thought of quite highly. Not only for bringing the country it's first and only title in sport but, for doing it in the teams debut in the tournament and in the process beating alot of better teams. However, the downside of this is that there will be alot of pressure on our boys to do well in this cup.

Speaking of which, how will the team fare in this upcoming tournament. Will they defend their title, or flame out early. Our guess is closer to the first as the team (reguardless of who makes the final team) look to easily pass through the group stage as they are one of the if not the strongest team in their group. Still, one or two slip ups could send this team out of the cup early. Filled with hopes of what could have been.

The Teams

Virabia - We are of course the defending champions of the tournament, so we are by far one of the favourites to go all the way. So, it's likely we will exit our group. However, as I mentioned earlier, just one bad performance could send this team flying out of the tournament much too early. Which would end up being bad for Virabia, as their rank would likely take a massive hit if that were to happen.

The Yorozuya - The Yorozuya apparently have quite a bit of history in this tournament. They have participated in all but the first and the fourth tournaments, and have done well in all of their appearences. Only failing to make the third place once in their four goes at the cup. The result of this is that the team is one of the top four in the world, and the best team in their group. However, they are by no means a new foe to Virabia. In the last tournament, the two sides faced off twice. Their first meeting was also Virabia's first international. In that match The Yorozuya trashed the LeagueNats 28 to two. The two teams next met in the semifinals where Virabia took their revenge 14 to 2. So when they meet again here, it will be a close match. As for our prediction; they are the top team in the group, so they are another favourite to make it out of the group.

The Weegies - Like Virabia, they also made their debut in Rugby League World Cup Six. However, unlike Virabia, they did not fare to well, as they ended up going out of their group in last place with only one point to their name. However, this time they are looking to do better, and with that motivation they will probably to do quite well. Thus they are our third pick to get out of the group albeit in fourth place.

Swartaz - Like The Weegies and Virabia, they also made their first appearance in the previous tournament. However, they did even worse than the two other teams in their group and left the tournament finishing fourth in their group. They now enter the tournament as the fourth best team in the group but, it's unlikely that they will play to that level. Our prediction for them is a fifth place finish.

Cantorberry - As one of the three new teams, we can't say much about them. We've never seen them play so they could end up being one of those teams that do unexpectedly well. However, for them that's unlikely and they'll most likely leave the tournament having finished 7th in their group.

Anseriska - Once again they are a new team. However, they are also Rushmori (which doesn't mean much except an insane populace) so they will definitely have quite a few fans at their matches cheering them on. Will this be enough to get them out of the group though? Our guess, no. They will, however, fight to a 6th place finish. However, if they return for the next edition (when ever that is), they will probably do much better.

Cotdelapoms - Every tournament has their newbies and likewise, every tournament has their newbies who do exceptionally well despite their their perceived weakness. And with four teams getting out of the group, it's likely that a few teams who are new will do quite well. The potential newbie to do well in this group is Cotdelapoms, who is our pick to get out of the group.

And there you have it our predictions for this cup. All that needs to happen now is the rugby!

National Journal
Saugeais stunned by late goal, loses 6-4

The Saugeais rugby team was shocked today. A late penalty goal from Delaclava puts the brakes on an otherwise forceful comeback attempt, causing the Knights to lose 6-4. Breaking down the game, Saugeais got off to a rough start giving up an early try in the first 10 minutes of the match. But the Knights played stout defense to combat the high-rush offense of Delaclava, keeping them from scoring for the rest of the half. Says Left wing Charles Du Bois, "We gave them exactly what they were dishing out to us, especially in the scrums." And in fact, Saugeais did win more scrums than Delaclava, with ten to their six. But Saugeais was running out of time as the second half went on, until right wing Claude Van Bomme found an opening in the defense and rushed in for the equalizing try in the 71st minute. However, the celebration was short-lived, as Saugeais committed a serious foul within their 20 metre line. "I didn't mean to trip him," says Carlos Mendoza, prop, "I was trying to get in close to make the tackle. If the referee would've been on the play, he would've seen the guy take a dive. That cost us the game." And indeed it did, as the Delaclava player converted the 2-point goal from 16 metres out, giving Delaclava the lead and eventually the win, 6-4.

Saugeais will get a break from action on Thursday, but will take on Somewhereistonia in their next match on Saturday. Stay tuned for full updates on SNN and online at national-journal.com.

SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

Eels Win In Disgusting Conditions

The Eels opening game of the Rugby League World Cup in Somewhereistonia against Windows Vista Business could be called a wash out. The match at Sparti Arena was most notable for the constant driving rain, a field which felt more like a swamp, hail in the second half, over fifty knockons by both teams, and the lowest completion rate many people have ever seen. The first half ended with no score, as both teams struggled to hold on to the ball and rarely made it past their opposition's 20. The second half saw hail, which was a distraction for everyone, but the deadlock was finally broken in the 70th minute when a dangerous tackle allowed Allan Hasan to score a penalty goal for the Eels. The match finished with a football score of 2-0, the lowest ever score in Rugby League World Cup history. Coach Tia Boissonneault after the match was reportedly furious with the organisers for forcing the game to go ahead. Elemanu plays Kulverint in their next match, who beat the Realm of Light 25-11, while in the other Group 2 match, Logria destroyed Burchadinger 60-16.

Paul Thackeray, Swans head coach: "Good" isn't the word, Bryan. We annihilated them out there. Fact is, these Germanics just don't know rugby like we do. They couldn't tackle, couldn't pass, couldn't kick...I'm a little disappointed we conceded sixteen points, to be honest.

BB: Seems a bit dismissive, there.

PT: You tell me one part of the game where you thought "hmm, this is a world class side up against Logria here." You can't. There are bigger fish to fry in this group.

BB: Like Kulverint?

PT: Exactly like them. Don't get me started on them.

BB: Why not?

PT: Because I hate those kick-and-chasing, "look at me" posturing, bad tempered, bad odoured, FLAG STEALING BASTARDS! I wish I could get them all, put them in a blender, and press "frappé". They're fu-

...hmm, we appear to have lost the transmission there...

Diary of a Champion

Yes, for all of you out there, the rumours are true. I have returned to defend the title in this League World Cup, and I'm also going to be blogging about it as, I'm sure all of you are wondering what it's like to be the defending champion. Now, this blog is more aimed at things off the field and away from the public eye as, to be honest, most of you know what's going on in the games, so my telling you would be a useless waste of space.
___________________

Now, as I'm sure anyone whose ever won something can tell you, winning feels real damn good. The adrenaline rush that you get id like none other. It creates a certain high, that after you achieve it you always pursue it again. However, when you accomplish something like we did last time around (winning on your first shot over some tough opponents), you get a high off winning unlike any you've ever gotten before. However, the downside of this is that you keep pursuing a bigger rush and, well when you look at the weight of what the team did last time, and the fact that it can really never happen again, well, what you get is a bunch of guys chasing something that we'll never get. Sure, it's motivation to do well, and those not on the squad are going to get a bigger victory high than they ever have before but, the 16 of us returning from last time. Well, we'll be like a dog chasing it's tail. Continuously working but, to no avail.

Don't get me wrong though, beating Cotdelapoms 72-0 felt good. It was the perfect way to start this campaign and in the match we worked as a cohesive unit of men and shown that we are capable of winning it all, and when we heard on the news last night that we played like a top team we felt good but, not as good when we won last time.

So, what do you feel about potentially being on the first team to win the tournament twice, I mean either this time or next time, Virabia's gotta win,.

BenNorth posted 4 minutes ago
Actually, that's likely what I'm going to write about tomorrow, so, I'll leave most thoughts on that till then. However, I will say that if we don't win this time, it's unlikely that we will be the first team to win twice, as if we don't win our second, Sorth and Somewhereistonia are both favourites to win their second title as well. Still, like I said, I will likely talk about that tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Two Cotdelapomais supporters overheard leaving Hiiu Staadion:

"72-0 isn't so bad for a bunch of union guys against the best team in the world, right?"
"Sure, we could have lost 100-0."
"At least the youth baseball team is winning..."

Official Message

Elemanu are pansies.

Yes, after a little bit of rain and about 5 minutes of hail the Elemanu team complained that their match shouldn't have continued. The feed showed the game being visible, thus the conditions couldn't have been that harsh. Games will only be postponed (and the tournament structure ruined!) if the weather gets to the point where the players are in real danger. All there was was a little bit of discomfort for them. This is Rugby League, not tiddlywinks or beach volleyball. This is a tough man's sport. Elemanu and any other teams worried about a little bit of rain need to get used to that idea if they want to succeed.

Also Elemanu should score more, the fans might get excited that way.

[OOC: This was discussed with Elemanu yesterday, if anyone is worried about... something.]

The Eels, branded pansies after their complaints about the hail in their last match, were intent on putting on a show for the fans when they faced Kulverint at Sparti Arena. Kulverint was coming off a nice four try to two victory over the Realm of Light, while Elemanu were thankful for a clear sky. Kulverint quickly raced to a twelve nil scoreline at the half hour mark, thanks to tries to Qwerty Uiop and Préna Nanni, with Ferana Vaigal pin-point accurate in their conversions. But fullback Allan Kindig hit back with an intercept on the Eels' 20 metre line, and ran 80 metres and past four players to put the Eels on the board, with Allan Hasan converting (despite the ball hitting the upright). Kulverint decided to make it that much harder for Elemanu though, with Vaigal putting through a field goal just before half-time and giving them a 13-6 lead going into the break. The second half saw both teams going strong, with the Eels looking for the breakthrough, but Kulverint was strong on defense and easily defused any bombs. It wasn't until the 61st minute that Kindig sent a grubber through and Malinda Delvecchio managed to get a hand to it to give Elemanu their second try, and Hasan put them just one point behind. Seven minutes later Hasan then put himself out of trouble by kicking a fluke field goal from the wing and the game was even. With both teams trying for field goals instead of going for the try, the defenders were quick to put down anyone with the ball, and the few shots that went up were all wide. It wasn't until three minutes before full time that Kindig got one in after stepping around two Kulverint players, and the Eels kept their lead to the siren.

Coach Tia Boissonneault was retrospect after the match: "We haven't been playing the best rugby out there, but we've had the luck and managed to get two wins. We need to up our game and start scoring tries, beause we're going to be up against some tough teams. Sorthern Northland just scored 75 points against an admittedly weak Burchadinger, while Logria have been averaging nine tries a game! We have to show these Somwhereistanis that we are not pansies and we are as tough as any team out there. Assuming it doesn't rain, of course. We don't like rain." Elemanu have a bye next up, before they play the Realm of Light at Capitol Arena.

Diary of a Champion

First off, I'm sorry about not blogging the previous two days but, I was buisy you know. Anyways, like I alluded to in my last post, todays topic will be the prospect of us potentially becoming the first nation to win the Rugby League World Cup, twice, not to mention that the two wins would also be consecutive.

The first thing that comes to my mind to say about this topic is that it's highly unlikely that we will win it again. Sure we are a much better team than last time around but, we are nowhere close to the level of quality needed so that even if we are unlucky we do well. It can also be argued that alot of results are that way based on luck, this is especially true when teams are evenly matched.

Take a look at the world of football for instance, Starblaydia has won five World Cups however, chances are if a few things happened differently, they'd currently be a team that is low in ranking and quality, and thats if they'd still be around. Now lets look at an example from my own sport, Sorthern Northland, they've made the Final an impressive five times. However, they've only won once. Now, if something had gone a little differently they could perhaps be the one of the only if not the only nation to score a five peat in anything.

What I'm getting at here is that while we do have the skill necessicary to win, our fate may be decided by whether or not Lady Luck sees it that we score a try.

Haotumum wrote 10 minutes ago: I do like how you make the point about how if things have gone a little differently, the world of sport would be a drastically different place and this is generally something I believe in real life but, I think you make it out like luck is this overly important factor in sport and in continuation everything else in the world. Now while I'm not saying that you do need a few lucky breaks to turn your way, you are not attributing nearly enough of success to the skill present. The way I see it, if you want to be a champion at anything you need skill, and you make it seem like its mostly luck. Which by extension means that any two-bit first time nation can win just about anything.

BenNorth wrote 5 minutes ago: Yea, I realised that after I posted my blog but, I didn't have the time to rewrite it so I'll put it here.

What I meant was that when you have an even matchup, or if your the underdog like we were last time around, you will need a few things to go your way, things not determined by skill but, by luck, and with out those variables added in, you might find your self on the losing end of the score line. If that makes any sense.

Haotumum wrote 3 minutes ago: Not really, I think you are still not attributing enough to skill. When you bring up your argument about Sorthern Northland, I think it could easily be argued that they simply don't have the skill required to jump over the final hurdle that is the RLWC final and thus they are consistantly second place.

The same is true with your Starblaydia argument. My response to that is that perhaps (and most likely) Starblaydia simply had a better team and a better stategy than their opponents and thus they won their five world cups.

BenNorth wrote 2 minutes ago: Yes, but what about the production of the players. I'd venture to say that it's luck that Starblaydia was able to produce five winning teams. Take Bazrador Drakkiborgo, for example, he could have just as easily been born in Virabia, and Virabia could have won a World Cup or two.

Haotumum wrote less than a minute ago: Yes but, you miss a key point here. The reason he or anyone else won championships in a particular sport is because he was born into a culture that valued football, and one that had a strong football program, thus he was trained to the level expected of football players in Starblaydia.

However, if he were born in a country like Virabia, which values intellectualism and ametuerism amongst other things, he could have just as easily been someone like Choam Nomsky, who is a reknowned professer who also plays football as an ametuer but, with the skill of someone who would be a professional.

Toi Sport
Second day in unknown sport

Despite the fact we entered into this world cup it turns out that the people of Teroi know very little about rugby league. Apart from the small minority that play it that is they seem to know a surprising amount. In our first game we took on Somewhereistonia and got a fairly crappy result. We lost it 97-2 and the 1,000 fans that turned up went home wishing for death.

It was dire to watch and we seemed to struggle to even kick a ball. We in the end only managed two measly points and the whole Teroian crowd had gone with 20 minutes left. Several people suggested that really we were rubbish at this sport. One person said that "Choking on your own hair for 7 hours," would be a more fun use of time.

The coaches and staff say that we just had a bad day and that we will do better next time, but the rest of the world knows otherwise. No fooling anyone here this just isn't our sport. Still hope still stands with us and as Teroians hope is what we live off in sports. Hopefully hope and determination can carry us through harsh reality into dreamland.
