I want to host an international underwater basket-weaving tournament. Should I start a signup thread right now?
Probably not. In order to host a sports RP, you first need a working scorinator. But you'll also need the trust of the community. Regularly participating in other threads will give you know-how about how things work that'll be useful if you ever decide to start your own tournament.

Does this go for reviving long-dead tournaments?

We could always rename the WCoH to the Cherry Cup if you really want...

No, please don't. The whole point of the Cherry Cup is that it wasn't the World Cup of Hockey, because it was too silly to be the regimented style of a World Cup.

You can make your own tournament. If you want to then you will need a scorinator (a method of generating scores - detailed on one of these stickies), and interest from other people.

It is likely that your intended sport is either covered or lacks enough interest to keep it going. A first step is probably to create an interest thread to find out whether it is worth doing.

I would advise competing in a few sporting tournament to get a feel for things first, but you don't have to, its just strongly advised.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Further details in this sticky--> viewtopic.php?f=7&t=611

You can, of course, make your own tournament, however I would offer these points of advice:

As that is your first post on these forums, I would wait until you're well known in the NS Sport community before trying to hold your own tournament, otherwise people may not trust you to run it adequately, or even bother to complete it at all.

If football/soccer is your sort of game, the best thing to do is sign up for The World Cup and, as it'd be your first tournament, the Baptism of Fire, too. If football is not your sort of thing, most other major sports tournaments come around fairly often so sign up for whatever takes your fancy.

To actually run a tournament, you'd best have a 'scorinator', which is a program that generates scores for you; it's the question most people will ask immediately of any new tournament: "how's it being scorinated?"

The Guide to Sports Roleplaying and World Cup FAQs are always worth a read, too.

Why do nations sign up puppets for sports events, especially in the World Cup where it is most prevalent?

Primarily? I think they're bored.
Secondarily, it gives you TWO chances to qualify for the World Cup.
Thirdly, it gives you a chance to experiment with your RPing.
Fourthly, It gives you a chance to improve your RPing.
Fifthly, Why not, if you have the time?

A puppet nation can allow you to explore a different line of RPing, whether it is a different style of play, different footballing culture, different race of people/elves/dwarves/bears/rabbits/gnomes/vegetables/nightmares/whatever (oh god, think of the slash fic  ).

If you have the time to devote to a puppet, whether it's vastly different from your main nation or incredibly similar to it, then it can be a rewarding experience, as it doubles the number of RPs you really have to read, the number of results you can check out for interest and, importantly, the stories that you can tell.

Right. I'm putting off the WCoH/WBC for the moment, and I'm going to give the Olympic articles on NSwiki a major spring clean. Just posting notice here as no one uses the NSwiki community articles anymore. If anyone wants to spruce up the older Olympic articles, in which I didn't participate (foolish QoD), have at it.

Well, you should get to know some type of scorinator. There are a few you can choose from. See here for a list: http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Scorinate

Personally, I use NSFS. It's simple and sets up all the tables for you, and whatnot. http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=NSFootySim

Why use dice when you can make a much fairer system using a scorinator, it's what the scorinators were made for.

Using dice will likely give you some sort of result but the ns sport community has already gone way beyond that and using them will probably result in people laughing at you. NSFS is the most commonly used scorinator and I suggest you use that for any football tournament that you might run.

So, what's the problem with downloading the program?

Do you think I have any idea about 'programming language'?

Why does that make a difference? You don't need to run your own tournament yet. You can (as most people do) just sign up and get used to how things work. If you do want to run your own tournament desperately then you should use NSFS. NSFS is fairly easy to work once you get the hang of it and most of the information you need is in the readme file. If you still have issues after that then you should post in the "scorinator issues" thread. Until you are using a proper method of scorination you will not get any experienced sign-ups to your tournaments.

You don't need to know any programming languages. It downloads as a java program. You get two sample files: one league one cup. You use that sample file to help you set up your league's XML file, and then you use the program to run it. It's not as complicated as it sounds. It will just require some practice.

You want a cup template made you will probably have to make it yourself. There is a sample cup template that you get when you download NSFS. You just adjust that to what you need.

If you haven't got it within you to invent 8 example names of nations (NationA, NationB, etc?) then there's not much help we can really offer you, I'm afraid.
