Whether there's a fair or standard method for generating results or not, that's another matter.

So hypothetically, would something like, say, gladiatorial competitions be banned? My guess is yes

There's no inherent reason I can see why it would not be allowed.

And having to admit - still in the midst. Good news, this weekend I have class, which ironically should give me some time to progress.

What do I make if I’m checking how many people would be interested in a sport?

Horse racing? Yes, now and then – Newmanistan or Equestrian States can probably help you out with more information.

Motor racing? Yes; stock car racing (Newmanistan again), GT racing (Hodori Motorsports) and Formula One racing (historically myself, but nowadays Audioslavia) have all had championships on NS.

If it's something with no history on the forum, an interest thread where you explain how you'd like to have the sport run would be useful. You can get specific advice, see if anyone has any burning ideas on how to do it, and generally find out if there's any likelihood of running it.

The interest thread can naturally morph into being a signup thread and a new sport can even be worth running with only a handful of nations involved, just to get your feet wet and see if it's actually fun to RP. It's all good experience.

Cool, thanks. Now, to find an open signup thread...

I’ve done rps in P2TM and F7. That’s about it

Speaking as someone who has tried to RP in Portal to the Multiverse, the biggest upfront differences between the two is we don't have a dedicated chat thread for RP interest—just search to see if it's been done before and if it hasn't, or hasn't been done for a verh long time, feel free to start a thread titled "(sport) Interest Thread" and ask. The second difference is using a scorinator, a custom-programmed random number statistics-based score generator, to generate results of each match. The third is signups generally consist of users posting "signing up" using the nation they're signing up with instead of an application that is discussed with the other participants.

Overall, welcome to NS Sports, hope your time here is pleasant.

1.)As far as I know, it hasn’t been done

2.)And there is the problem.

3.)So people just say “signing up”?

1: NS Sports has been knocking around for so long that we’ve given pretty much everything a go. Having said that, if you’re really into something that hasn’t been done for a while or isn’t a mainstream thing, you’re very welcome to give it a go by creating an interest thread as said above.

2: If you’re wondering about scorinators, the most widely used is Commerce Height’s behemoth that is Xkoranate. It contains formulas for almost everything that’s ever been done on NS Sports and is relatively easy to use. More specific formulas for Football (soccer), American Football (football) and rugby also exist.
Hosting (having a competition in your own country in return for taking on the scorination rights) is generally done by people with a little more experience, so don’t get too fussed about it yet. If you open your sport to host bids and gather enough interest, a capable host will likely step in.

3: Yep! There’s a few exceptions such as the Olympics, WGPC (F1) and NSTT (tennis) where you have to register your players as part of the signup, but pretty much all team sports use ‘signing up’ or even just ‘in’. Further information is posted as rosters and RPs in the IC threads. Go to one of those and there should be plenty of examples.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your time on NS Sports.

I'm a bit of an esports enthusiast, and I'd like to set up an intranational esports league just for fun. However, xKoranate doesn't have anything for Counter-Strike style esports (in which there are eliminations and objectives) and I was wondering whether anyone has or whether anyone could teach me to write an XML file for something like that.

Thanks!

Graphic, gory descriptions of the results of the gladiator fights would likely not be allowed. However, if you keep it PG-13 and within the site’s rules, it should be allowed. The only competition I can recall being disallowed since I’ve been here was a Muslim hunting contest.

The most graphic and gory description I can think of in any esport is a headshot and usually the heads don't pop out in games.

I've thought of starting some sort of LCS-inspired e-sports event myself. Some people suggested to me that (for League of Legends, at least) the American and Canadian football stuff would work for kill totals...
In the CS:GO or Call of Duty worlds, I'd say edit the volleyball scorination file to set the maximum score to the total number of kills needed to win. Just my suggestion.

What programs do you need to run a football (soccer) simulation?

xkoranate is enough for most users, unless you want to have complete stats, goalscorers and stuff like that, then you'll need another method.

Hello, I've been reading this sub-forum since a couple of days ago, I'm interested in taking part here, so I created today this nation to get involved specifically in the sport of football, I have a couple of questions about things that haven't cleared up on my mind since I started to check this site.

1) There's a football league system or something like that, to the style of UEFA/AFC competitions?
2) How can I take part of a WC? There are requirements or something per se?
3) Which RP style is the most common? In-game narratives, international interaction or something else?
4) What is a style modifier? Which are the mechanics of said system?

I hope somebody clears my panorama by answering this, it'd be so much help for me because I'd finish to build my mental puzzle.

Question 1: Yes there is it’s called the UICA and anyone can enter

Question 2: Although there are no requirements to enter qualifiers you must qualify to make it to the actual WC finals

Question 3: Game recaps are definitely the most common way of RPing although you can write about anything from crazy side stroys to how a player joined you national team

Question 4: a Style modifier is used in the scorinaton process you will most likely want to post it in your roster it ranges from and decimal from +5 (super offensive) to -5 (super defense) so for example my national teams style modifier is -1.40

Welcome to NS Sports! We hope you enjoy your time here. I can answer these questions for you, and just ask if you need further clarification.

1) Yes there is! Unfortunately it just now finished its most recent iteration. Here is the thread where results are posted, you can read around on there to see how things generally operate. If you want to see the most recent iteration of the competition, see here!

2) You can take part in the World Cup immediately if you'd like. There are no requirements, all you have to do is post on the signup thread and you'll be entered. As for actually participating, you can post a roster and RPs, although it seems you've figured that out already.

3) The bread and butter of the subforum here is definitely match reports, basically like news articles detailing the results of the most recent matches. Other commonalities include character-based RPs that revolve around players, managers, or other influential sporting figures in the tournament. Some users have been known to write world-building RPs or even completely unrelated prose they've written. In any case, any RP will do. To get your feet on the ground and really find your nation/national team's character, it's easiest to start with match reports.

4) Style modifiers are numbers inputted into the scorinator (score generating program used by the tournament hosts) which reflect a team's tendencies. The numbers range from +5, an all-out attacking squad that goes for goals and neglects defense, to -5, an ultra-defensive team which mainly tries to block the opposition from scoring at all costs before considering scoring themselves. 0 is balanced, which means a team is equally offensive and defensive. Any numbers in between follow the same pattern on a scale. Basically positive numbers are offensive and negative numbers are defensive, and the closer to 5 you get the more extreme the tactics are.

From a technical standpoint, the style modifier can affect the amount of goals scored in a game. It won't change the result of the match (if Team A beats Team B by 2-1 before calculating the style mods, the scorinator won't make Team B win 2-3 just because Team B is +5). It only affects the amount of goals scored by both teams, and sometimes the margin depending on which formula of style mod is used, but never the final result.

I hope these answers were detailed and explanatory enough to help you out. Have fun! :)

Indeed, those answers are enough to cover up any pothole in my overall scheme of things here.

Seems super cool the in-game narrative and nation building as well, I'll give it a try to the WC.

Is there a dicussion thread for non-Olympic sports? Organisation of Olympic sports seems to happen through the OGDT, but what about other sports?

The specific case is motorsports - I want to start bringing some life to Savojar rallye driving (within my newswire, no major competition) and consider opening it to the general public. My question now is whether I should open a new thread, there is a specific OOC thread or I should just hijack the OGDT as if we were talking about an Olympic sport.

There are various motorsport competitions that take place independently, without the need for a discussion thread. Hodori has run his own supercar competition (open, within reason, to others) in his own thread, so I don't see why you couldn't simply start a new thread for Sajovar rallying. Anyone who's interested in motorsport anyway will find it.

My apologies if this doesn't belong here, but I've seen others make posts about similar things in the past on this subforum, so my understanding is that it's allowed if it's only occasional.

Anyway, to the point, every year, I run a contest for NS Sports participants to pick the RL NCAA Tournament. This year's contest group can be found here and the password is "damnyoukuni" (without the quotes. Deadline to get in is Thursday at noon EDT.

To try to keep with the "only mention off-site stuff very occasionally" rule, there will be no further advertisement of this here or anywhere else on this site until next year's contest.
