Islands Of Ventro wrote:Hello I am brand new to Nationstates sports and don't really understand it all that well. I hear that something called, "the baptism of fire" and is going to start soon. I would also like to participate in the World cup but I do not know how. Can someone answer my questions.

Welcome! The Baptism of Fire is the first event of the World Cup Cycle, which happens every few months. The Baptism of Fire (BoF) is an event reserved for nations who are participating in the World Cup for the first time. You can't sign up for the Baptism of Fire without also signing up for the World Cup. Once you play in the BoF once though, that's your only shot. You can only sign up for the World Cup after that.

Right now we're getting towards the end of the qualification stage of the World Cup. That means the World Cup Cycle will likely conclude by the end of February, and then there'll be a month or two of downtime. Expect signups to come in late March or early April ... That's when you can enter the next edition of the World Cup, as well as the Baptism of Fire! When the new signup thread is opened, all you have to do is post in the thread saying you want to participate (also be sure to say you want in on the Baptism as well!)

Hope this was helpful. Feel free to ask any more questions you have!

I’m currently in the process of making a domestic news wire about my nations open wheel racing league, the Formula Racing Series. I’m having some issues figuring out how to format it and how to generally make it look. Anyone have any ideas on how I can present it?

Give a look at WGP3 Topic and Hodori Motorsports posts. You'll find a lot of references there.

Are domestic leagues where only OP nation is allowed to RP but Non-OP nations may sponsor permitted?

Style modifiers impact the amount of goals scored in a game. Negative style modifiers (0 to -5) mean less goals are scored in a game on average, while positive style modifiers (0-5) mean on average, more goals will be scored in a game. What it doesn't do is change the margin of victory. So having a style modifier of +5 wouldn't change a 2-1 victory to a 4-1 victory, but it could change a 2-1 victory to a 5-4 victory, for example.

Side note here: Additive (xkoranate) modifiers won't change the margin of victory. Multiplicative (NSFS) modifiers WILL change the margin of victory. Since goal difference is an often-used tiebreaker, multiplicative mods are almost never used in international competitions anymore, since it would give positive style mod teams a greater advantage.

I'm hosting my first tournament and opted for a double-elimination structure without realizing that it's rather complicated (edit: well, with my lack of hosting experience and seeing these kinds of tournaments much)

For a double-elimination tournament with 8 teams, following this bracket, would the following schedule be a good idea, or is it too confusing/strange to follow? I will probably have the RP periods for each MD be 48 hours long. Sorry for the long-winded terminology; I'm not sure what these rounds would actually be called.

MD1: rounds 1, 2, 3, 4 [i.e. first round with all 8 teams paired against each other]
MD2: rounds 5, 6, 7, 8 [main bracket semifinal, console bracket first round of 4]
MD3: rounds 9, 10 [console bracket second round of 4]
MD4: rounds 11, 12 [main bracket final, console bracket semifinal]
MD5: round 13 [console bracket final]
MD6: round 14, 15 [grand final]

Thanks!!

The main thing I would suggest is posting a visual bracket. Either that Challonge link, an NSSwiki link, or just an image. Double elims are hard to follow otherwise but a visual flow chart makes it much more intuitive.

No. Theoretically, you could host it, but the question would be thrown back to you on your methods of scorination, which you would have to convince the community on.

If by "host" one of those RL games you mean "hey here's a tournament I created and you can join to actually play it", then that doesn't belong here.
What does belong here is "hey here's a tournament for your made-up esports athletes from your countries to take part in".

I believe eSports was one of the demonstration events during one edition of the Summer Olympics hosted by Free Republics.
Although I have not seen any tournament organized on its own (i.e. which has its own RP/everything thread).

What programs do Event Hosts use to simulate whatever sport they are doing?

Most of us use xkoranate for most tournaments. You can download it here, and a basic guide for how to use it can be found here.

Problems with Sports RP

Postby Arjunnagar » Mon May 10, 2021 6:50 am

I see that sometimes some Sports Rp become of big importance because of copyrighted names of events in IRL sports, or simply, the occasional disagreement.
Here is my draft for a new 'rule' in NS Sports

1.No copying real-life events.
2.Not prohibiting players if there is still time left before the sing-ups closes
3.Allowing some countries to play a big part in the competition, and not just playing it.
(This should in the world assembly forum, but I don't know how to save)

Arjunnagar wrote:(This should in the world assembly forum, but I don't know how to save)

Firstly, I have towed this post to NS Sports, where it belongs. Neither the WA or Nationstates forums have nothing to do with Sports RP rules, and this is the appropriate thread for the discussion

Arjunnagar wrote:1.No copying real-life events.

The RL concept of a 'World Cup' is rather universal and not owned by any particular sport, as many of them run a World Cup. This is naturally a common title that adds verisimilitude to NS Sports, making it feel more realistic. What is not allowed, as mentioned in the 'What does not belong' section of the Guide to Sports Roleplaying is copycat athletes, teams and tournaments, which for ease I will post below. Here, for example, will not run the 2022 FIFA World Cup, instead we have the 88th NationStates World Cup.

Referencing the original title of the T20 thread that you posted, you were accidentally copying the Nationstates version of the tournament. The different sports tend to have organising bodies, which 'own' the concept of an NS-wide World Cup (or other named tournament) for that sport.

NSWC Signups wrote:What DOESN'T Belong

- Tournaments using real-life teams or athletes (e.g. The UEFA Champions League, the US Open, Lionel Messi, The 2018 World Cup etc.)

- Tournaments that are not scorinated, or have scores generated through Video Games such as FIFA, Football Manager, Madden, etc. Domestic Leagues can be done in this manner, though.

- Events that are not related to sport.

- Discussion about real life sports events or games. This should go in the General forum.

- Copycat versions of existing tournaments. A number of sports have a dominant competition that you cannot claim to be hosting without being voted in by other users. Some examples are:
  • Football/Soccer: The NationStates World Cup, Baptism of Fire and Cup of Harmony
  • Football/Soccer: The Under-21 (Di Bradini Cup), Under-18 (Sporting World Cup) and Under-15 World Cups
  • American Football: The World Bowl, NationStates College Football
  • Baseball: World Baseball Classic
  • Ice Hockey: World Cup of Hockey, Cherry Cup
  • Formula 1: WGPC, WGP2
  • Athletics: The NS Olympic Games
  • Lacross: World Lacrosse Championships
  • Quidditch: The Quidditch World Cup
  • Handball: Handball World Cup

Arjunnagar wrote:2.Not prohibiting players if there is still time left before the sing-ups closes

Tournaments are held (usually being voted for) by volunteer players who, for scheduling reasons, usually limit their competitions to a certain number of participants. "Length of time left until sign-ups close" is not a meaningful measurement.

Arjunnagar wrote:3.Allowing some countries to play a big part in the competition, and not just playing it.

This you will need to elaborate on, because our competitions are split into:

  1. Hosts, who organise competitions and play in them
  2. Players, who play in competitions.

There was that one World Cup where all of the qualifiers were held in a specific set of nations for RP purposes, one nation per group, although the host [or hosts?] still did all of the scorinating...

I think that'd be stretching the meaning of 'RL' :lol2:

The guide is just a guide, not a set of laws. Setting up a tournament and saying you're Juventus and you want someone to roleplay Arsenal isn't appropriate, but setting up a tournament where your team Zombie Juventus Legends challenge any and all comers would be fine. There's a line somewhere in between but I don't feel a pressing need to figure out where it is

Lord Almighty Gregory supposedly kidnapped Darrelle Revis and Brian Urlacher and forced them to play on the Gregoryisgodistan (gridiron) football team in the World Bowl, and they supposedly liked Gregoryisgodistan so much they decided to live there (or they got Stockholm Syndrome.) Of course, this being Lord Almighty Gregory, you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt and it was left as an interpretation to the reader whether to believe they really were who he claimed they were. But that was fine.
