Hello! I'm coming in to post as a Committee Member for this year's NS World Fair. The World Fair is an annual event lasting about a week in mid December, going into it's 6th year, which attempts to bring all of NS together for various lectures, regional booths, games, etc. It celebrates all the different facets of NS, and increases exposure between them.

One past element has been an arena for NSSports, but as one might imagine, it's been historically pretty dead. It sorta languished without a purpose or drive. The Committee wants to change that this year!

Our current idea is to look for an existing NSSports Community/Group/League that is willing to be an "anchor" of the NSSports section, and have them host what I'm used to calling in the tabletop world a "one-shot" - a simplified version of the usual game designed to take place in a much shorter period of time (one group meeting, or in this case, a one week event) - and give it a participation base from their own community (in addition to being open, of course, to everyone).

Our standing idea was to theme it as a sort of holiday fundraiser tournament, sort of like a Home Run Derby. Something fast and fun!

Can anyone recommend any contacts for me in regards to this? And particular communities I could reach out to on this?

A few of us have just seen this and are currently discussing on our IRC channel who the best person to contact is!

I'm not the largest source of authority around here but I imagine the best thing we could do would be a quick tournament (likely soccer/association football, since it's the biggest sport here) with a short group stage and a 2 or 3 round playoff at most (since there's only a week to do anything).

Again, there's not exactly a defined head honcho around here and we should probably identify a specific person to organize this, but I feel like any willing EWCC (Executive World Cup Committee) members who stepped forward to spearhead this would be greatly reliable.

Great to hear! I'm not sure if you have competing authorities/committees, but if so, we'd certainly be open to hearing multiple proposals.

Quick is the name of the game! 4-5 days is quite possible. I'm no NS-sports person, but maybe also consider a non-traditional format (I mentioned a home run derby earlier)...free kick-off, small teams, stuff like that. Could be an opportunity for mixing up the RP, as well as being done faster than a full game setup! An individual or a small team works. Yeah, I would have poked at a mentor first if there were any xD

National Leader Mixed Doubles Beach Volleyball tournaments always bring out the crowds for even the non-sporting folks (well, it did the one time I hosted one, so the value of 'always' is up for debate), so I'd recommend one of those.

I like the idea of having countries of all stripes RP their national leader in a silly low-stress tournament! I'm thinking mini-golf would be good to be over in 4 days no matter what and work well independently of signup count.

Assuming that I'd potentially be hosting, do people think there's enough RP energy to make it worth my/the fair's while? I don't want to invest my time going forward if it's likely to fall flat.

Personally, minigolf sounds more approachable/dynamic than Volleyball for a wide audience. Easier to write putt-putt and odd, themed courses with pizzazz than the other

Alrighty, folks, I'm looking at getting the sign-ups to the next edition of the World Bowl later this month; either in the next week or so, or towards the week of US Thanksgiving, with an eye the World Bowl itself started up to coincide with the onset of College Football Championship Week, or, failing that, Bowl Season.

I'm going to take silence as assent on this, so if anyone objects, make sure to register those objections.

There is a qualifying process involving a group stage with large groups (10-15 nations in each group). The top 2 qualify for the World Cup, or the top qualifies and the second place goes on to a playoff with another second-place nation to qualify. Depends on the number of groups.

The Maple Leaf Bowl is currently on indefinite hiatus due to lack of interest in gridiron football RP. Given the low level of activity in recent World Bowls, the complete lack of RP in the Arena Bowl earlier this year and the fact that I'd likely end up being forced to host it due to lack of bids, I don't see a point in opening a Maple Leaf Bowl signup thread anytime soon.

If/when there is reasonable reason to believe that the Maple Leaf Bowl would see a reasonable level of RP, I'll definitely reconsider but there's not really a point in continuing to run a tournament that draws less than 2-3 RPs per matchday (and recent Maple Leaf Bowls and Arena Bowls have not even had 1 RP per matchday).

We already have U21, U18, and U15 tournaments for soccer/football, plus a bunch of senior team tournaments. We don't really need yet another youth tournament.
