NSFS with additive mods and no home advantage will be used to scorinate this tournament. Tiebreakers go Points > GD > H2H > H2H GD > IC coin flip (OOC simulated game with draws off).

A VISITOR'S GUIDE TO TUMBRA

LOCATED in central Esportiva, the Federal Republic of Tumbra is a sprawling, modern democratic republic of a hundred and twenty-one million people. Often considered a regional power, Tumbra has a diversified, modern economy amd is one of the strongest economies within Esportiva and the greater AREIMAS regions. Comprising twenty-five states and one territory to its north, sixteen stadiums throughout the country have been allocated for the hosting of the 42nd Campionato Esportiva. Airports, Getting To and Travelling Within Tumbra

Tumbra is a country of many climates; cold in the north, temperate in the middle and warm in the south. The sparkling, white-sanded beaches of the south and eastern coast, the mountains of the west and the boundless plains of central Tumbra also offer dazzling tourist spots if you wish to just relax. There's also the more metropolitan cities, chock-full of culture and nightlife for the less nature-inclined amongst visitors. Tumbra does not observe daylight saving time; the whole country is in a single timezone.

Getting to Tumbra would usually entail taking a plane from an airport; Tumbra has twelve international airports, the locations of which can be found in the above factbook. To get to destinations not provided by airport, high-speed rail that travels up to about 320km/h inside the country offers transport to all thirteen cities hosting a match, ensuring comfort, speed and reliability to get your players to their matches on time. Within cities, most cities have at least some form of mass rapid transit or light rail that forms the basis of their transport system.

Should you still wish to travel by car, Tumbra uses left-hand drive, and verifiable international licenses are a prerequisite to hire a car. Expressways to each of the major cities do exist, though...trains also exist...and are faster...

IF your nation comes from Esportiva, Tumbra can be reached within four to six hours' flight; if it comes from the regions of Anaia, Arrosia, Rushmore or Mandalanunsa, then Tumbra can be reached from anywhere from six to twelve hours' flight; and for countries from outside the five sporting regions, then flights to Tumbra will take twelve hours or more.

Ticket Policies and Stadium Rules

All visitors with a valid ticket will be given a visa; for those attending multiple matches, the visa will be extended accordingly. Tickets will be apportioned fairly; 40% to each team, and 10% will be sold to Tumbrans, with the remaining 10% to others. Ticket scalping is, of course, illegal; should one come across such an act of ticket scalping, then call 999 (the number for the Police in Tumbra). The number for emergency services (fire, ambulance) is 995. For this tournament, the take-up rate for Tumbran tickets is expected to be significantly lower than in previous years, and it is expected that only about 5 to 7% of tickets will actually be taken up by Tumbran spectators. Matches played by Tumbra will also see lower capacity, to the extent that teams playing Tumbra could potentially bag up to 60% of seats in the stadium.

Stadium-goers should be aware that public drunkenness and acts of hooliganism are arrestable offences, and the police often keep a strong presence at matchdays. Pyrotechnics are banned from being brought into stadiums; tifos and banners are allowed, however.

Laws

The policing in each state is run by the state governments, though they are all run to a unified federal code, which standardises most equipment and techniques. Federal laws will apply here; some of the more important ones are...

The age to buy alcohol and tobacco is set at 18 years.
The age of consent is 18 years. Prostitution is legal.
The status of marijuana, confusingly for Tumbra, is vague and depends on the state. The usage of medical marijuana, however, is legalised throughout all states.
The importation of alcohol and tobacco is illegal without declaration; and there are strict limits on the amount. Importation of marijuana is illegal; the same goes for other hard drugs.
There is a blanket ban on assault weapons in Tumbra, and no importation is allowed.

The currency of Tumbra is the Tumbran Dollar, with the exchange rate being set at 1 NSD to 1.33 TMD. There is a ten per cent consumption tax on all items; usually it is factored into the price of the item. All prices in this post are in NSD.

What to expect from a trip to Tumbra

Most hotels are 5* hotels closer to any given city centre, with hotels the further out of any city centre you go being more likely to be 4* or 3*. Hotel prices can range from $108/night at the most basic 3* hotels to over $500 at the most exclusive 5* hotels. Ticket prices for away fans have been capped at $75. An average week-long trip, with an assumed price of a $150/night hotel, comes out to around $3500/person. Tumbra uses BS 1363 three-pin plugs, like any civilised country; they also use the metric system, so a pint is 568ml instead of 473ml.

Most restaraunts serve two meals a day. The working day is from nine till five, five days a week, though the country is slowly moving towards a four-day work week. Most food chains are open until at least nine, with fast-food chains sometimes being open 24/7. Fast-food options include local brands like Happy Mac's (burgers and fries), Pete's (fried chicken and spaghetti, mainly, comes complete with anthropomorphic chicken mascot who, for some reason, eats chicken and spaghetti), and BreadTime (sandwiches, mainly subs). Coffee chains include Moonbeam (complete with sexually-suggestive mermaid mascot and more options that resemble coffee-flavoured milkshakes rather than actual coffee), Fortuna (new-on-the-block "tech-enabled" chain that really just means you use an app to order coffee), and Chestnut Coffee (kind of a hipster brand that specialises in the sit-down experience and pastries alongside the coffee). Your favourite foreign food brand should have an outlet or two in the bigger cities. Street food is commonplace, though highly regulated; you're more likely to find a food truck than a real street food shop. Tipping is not a thing in Tumbra and may actually be considered rude. The great institution of Tumbra, is, however, the bar; or, euphemistically called, the public house; while grubby and sticky, most of these institutions do serve rather cheap food and beer, and are one of the more-respected third spaces in the country.

When on public transport, it's common etiquette to shut up on the train, tram, or bus. If you must speak on the phone, do it quietly. Listening to music without any kind of audio device is a major social faux pas. When on escalators, stand on the left unless you're walking; pass on the right otherwise. Most public transport charges a small fee for use. No eating or drinking (except water) is allowed on public transport; it's common courtesy to give up your seat to the elderly, infirm, or pregnant. Public transport is by far the most common method of getting around Tumbra; stadiums rarely have many car park lots.

Most telecom services are offered by one of three companies: Tumbra Telecom, QTMB, or Lightning Telecom. Each of these offer data roaming facilities at competitive rates, though it's recommended you do your research before you go. Most public spaces have some sort of public WiFi, though bringing your own form of internet security is highly recommended for various reasons. Internet penetration rates are pretty high, with only the most rural of rural areas not having any kind of signal.

STADIUM INFORMATION

CITIES AND STADIUMS: IN DEPTH
(Starts with Straton, then goes clockwise in order of the map)

STRATON
The country's capital, Straton sometimes gets an unfair reputation for being overly gray. It's understandable, of course — most federal government buildings are distinguishable by the exact same material used to clad their walls, a sort of gray slate that's given members of the civil service a somewhat dour nickname of "The Grey Men." Regardless, there is fun here if it's looked for; the northern part of the city, which is home to the country's biggest and most prestigious post-1864 university is known for being the main place where fun happens; and, well, failing that, there's always the country's largest observation wheel, standing tall at 169m and pretty much defining the city's skyline. Most institutions of national importance are housed here; including the National Air and Space Museum, co-located with the National Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, National Arts Gallery, and so on. Most impressive, probably, is the National Library; the country's biggest library which is co-located with the National Archives. All three branches of government are housed here, too; as well as most monuments to the country's founding fathers, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, commemorating lives lost during the Civil War.

The Eagles' Club (88,000)
The shiny new toy of the Tumbran national team, the Eagles' Club was completed somehow ahead of schedule and below cost, in a miracle to both the taxpayer and authorities. Set in a district of its own, surrounded by a lush park, museum dedicated to Tumbran football history and with train links directly into the heart of the city and to the airport that serves the giant conurbation that is Straton-Serrapince, the Eagles' Club is the most modern stadium of its kind. Clad in a white, colour-changing exterior, the stadium is fully sheltered, has a giant arch over its top and has almost every comfort you would want for a stadium-going experience.

SERRAPINCE
Home to the city's financial industry — which directly means that the city is also known for its debauchery and nightlife (what do you expect when you have a heavy concentration of people in the financial sector in close proximity to each other?), Serrapince is Tumbra's second largest city, but one that's still diverse enough to essentially be an everycity. Of particular interest to tourists would probably be the spiky building known as the Modern Hedgehog, but really is the Serrapince Museum of Modern Art, which serves as the country's largest collection of art produced post-1950. Or, as some more traditional critics would call it, "art". Apart from that, the country's largest Yoshiman Garden is located here, as well as Exhibition House, a giant glass building that was built in 1882 for the country's turn at hosting the Universal Exposition.

Serrapince Park (74,500)
The distinctive yellow pylons provide this stadium with its exterior. Completed in the 1970s as the capstone of Serrapince's project to monopolise the football market in the area, it now provides one of the most intimidating atmospheres in Tumbran football, with the northern stand being home to Serrapince's "ultras". Located in a giant athletics and sporting complex, Serrapince Park forms the main part of the sporting district of the city; and remains the focal point of the club's attempts to dominate the Tumbran football scene.

MARRAY
Tumbra's top party city, Marray is home to the finest beaches in Tumbra; unusually for the northeast of the country, it's sun, sand and sparkling-clear waters. Marray is where Tumbra's main cruise terminal is; and the city is renowned for its bustling nightlife. Come for the sand dunes; stay for the football. Of particular note is the city's promenade, where most of the city's nightlife is; the most renowned clubs are Enigma, Paradise Inferno, and Aventurine, the last of which is located right on the beachfront and is probably the most exclusive club in the whole city. What happens in Marray, stays in Marray, some say; and while casinos may still be illegal here, the city's not known as the country's entertainment capital for nothing. Theme parks, film studios...it's all glamour here.

Oceanside Stadium (44,000)
Opened in 2013 as an example of a modern stadium, Oceanside certainly remains as one of the best-equipped stadiums in Tumbran football. A modern glass-and-steel facade pays tribute to the many players who have passed through and worn the colours of Port Marray. While it's a little way out of the city boundaries — and certainly very far from Marray's old stadium in the middle of the city — the transport links to the stadium ensure that trips to Marray's home ground are smooth, both in and out.

HESHAM
Despite its size and proximity to Lakewood, Hesham is seen as a relatively laid-back city, more than content to let time pass it by. This is where Clearmont's agricultural industry — carried mostly by wheat — sends its cargo for it to be exported to the world. It's lost a bit of its cultural identity as time's gone on and Lakewood has begun to slowly subsume the city into the amorphous blob that is Greater Lakewood, but locals will never let anyone forget that modern Tumbran football was born here; after all, the meeting between club executives that formed the first-ever league competition was held here. Perhaps unsurprisingly with all that wheat passing through the city, it's got a high amount of breweries; and also the highest number of pubs per capita in Tumbra.

George Bowen Stadium (40,000)
Named after Hesham FC's longest-serving manager who delivered the club its only title and later saved the club from bankruptcy, the Ploughmen's arena with its distinctive bright green seats is a more rectangular effort than most. Distinctive for its bright green pylons that run along the outside of the stadium, it's a bit denser than most stadiums - only having one tier throughout it.

LAKEWOOD
The industrial powerhouse of the South East, Lakewood made its fortunes during the Industrial Revolution (which arrived late on this country's shores — thanks, empire!) due to the burgeoning textile industry that was essentially spawned large waves of migration to the city. It helped that Lakewood was one of the few ports where immigrants to the country were able to be processed, alongside Nantwich and Couno; meaning that the city, more than others, has become more of a cultural melting pot than others. Homage is paid to this through the Museum of Immigration, located on the site of a former immigration processing centre. The city has grown so large in recent years that the city's suburbs have essentially spilled over into Hesham; the two form what is essentially a giant urban conurbation. It helps that the same international airport serves both cities.

Lakewood City Arena (58,000)
Home to Lakewood United's rivals Lakewood City, the LCA was a more modern construction; only being completed in 2005. It, therefore, looks nicer than Trenton Park; but the diatribes launched against it say that it's a soulless atmosphere. Supports of City point to their attendance records and recent success. It is equipped with all the comforts of a modern stadium, really; and it's located closer to Lakewood's city centre than Trenton Park.

Trenton Park (74,500)
Trenton Park is home to Lakewood United, historically the most successful team in Tumbra. A massive, sprawling colosseum, its differently shaped ends do make it look a bit dated, but gives it a lot of its charm — it began life over a hundred years ago, and was added to, piece by piece. Fans label this stadium "The House That Stephenson Built," referring to the longest-serving manager of Lakewood United, Ben Stephenson. The acoustics here are also excellent, adding to the atmosphere here.

NEWTON
That Tumbra has a long history in maritime trade is unsurprising; nearly all of its major cities of note are located on the coast. Newton is no different; but adds a different spin on the matter. Back in its heyday, Newton was the capital of Tumbran piracy and a city where even the most strict imperial rule couldn't get bring it down (until unification, of course — but that's a different matter). The entirety of the city centre could be a historical monument in itself; and that's not forgetting the fact that Newton is a canal city, where you're just as likely to catch a bus as a ferry over the waters to your next destination. Expect plenty of monuments to maritime heroes here; this city, alongside Collatia and Nantwich, is one of the three homes of the Tumbran shipbuilding industry.

Novena Park (32,000)
Located in a natural bowl in the suburbs which originally gave it a capacity of over 86,000 before those pesky things called "regulations" got in the way, Novena Park looks dated; but it still regularly pulls in crowds and is always one of the most filled stadiums in the country, no matter which tier the Newton Wanderers are playing in. While not as large, or as flashy, as Columbia's Columbus Field, Newton's transport infrastructure and ability to host more people than the admittedly smaller town of Columbia means that Newton has been given the green light to host international-standard matches. Whether or not this means that the capacity of the stadium will be increased to 40,000 is still in the air; but the stadium could really use a fresh coat of paint to liven it up a little.

KINGSBURY
The old imperial capital, Kingsbury's Historic Quarter is worth a whole afternoon on its own. The last castle of the Terenbergs (the old imperial family) was located here; nowadays it's a walkthrough museum, which takes a surprisingly neutral tone on the whole royalty thing. One of the wings of the castle has been converted into a public library, which probably shows the amount of attention the former royals receive these days. Apart from that, there's the Kingsbury Cathedral, which is the seat of Emberican Christianity and the Archbishop of Kingsbury; though it's probably telling of religion's place in public life that nobody gives a toss about them either.

Fletcher Park (45,000)
In a city full of history, the somewhat more modern-looking Fletcher Park stands out in the country. Located somewhat near the heart of the city, the stadium was recently expanded to fit 45,000 people. That was the latest in the long line of rebuilds, going from a bowl-shaped stadium in a natural valley to a much smaller, almost entirely white stadium with a curving roof; instantly giving the stadium a recognisable facade.

BENCOOLEN
The most colourful (and gayest, statistically) of Tumbra's cities, Bencoolen is possibly the most liberal place in the country. Many social movements that eventually grew to become nationwide movements began here; women's liberation in the 60s and gay rights in the 70s can all trace their origins to this city. Most well known for the litany of low-rise, pastel-coloured houses that dot the seafront, as well as the tight, windy high-rise apartment buildings that are so close together it doesn't really feel like a Tumbran city, Bencoolen is different from the rest of the country, and likes to make it known. Bencoolen is known for being the place where bohemians want to live, by trading on art; and many a Tumbran artiste, thespian, author, and poet cut their teeth here. As for sports, try sailing, or watersports; the surfing culture is strong here, and the sport of yachting is mostly concentrated here as well, with regattas dotting the horizon. It helps that the weather is really conducive for this sort of thing.

Bencoolen City Stadium (55,000)
The smallest of all of Tumbra's twenty-five states, Bencoolen's stadium also includes an athletics track; which, unfortunately, puts distance between the supporters and the players on the pitch. There have, however, been plans mooted to install temporary seating for football matches; though with Tumbra's multiversal sporting ambitions, this may come later, rather than sooner, and if at all. This stadium is notable for also having a movable roof; however, there are no plans for the roof to be closed during any games here.

FONTWELL
The biggest city in the West, Fontwell's an underrated gem of a city; and it's also probably one of the best places in Tumbra to learn about a side of the country's history that sometimes flies under the radar — the Western Republic. The Museum of Western History is located here, and it's chock-full of almost everything the uninitiated would need to know about the unrecognised republic, which fought a guerilla war against the Empire of Tumbra in its waning days, and contributed heavily to the latter's losses in the brutal civil war. Apart from that, why not try looking at the automobile industry? Cheap foreign imports have shrunk the domestic market somewhat these days, but the legacy is still there — Carlton Motors still chugs out variations of the Carlton Cross, the original Tumbran car, and they've got a fantastic museum as well. Go a fair bit east, into the neighbouring state of Caduke, and you'll be able to see Tumbra's most stunning natural beauties; Mount Vernon, Tumbra's highest mountain, as well as visit Mount Fesmos Circuit, which is one of the highest-rated motorsports circuits in the world. It's even hosted a round of the World Grand Prix Championship before, but it's unlikely to return. Being the westernmost stadium hosting games this tournament, Fontwell presents a unique opportunity for tourists to visit the west in general, an area of stunning natural beauty.

Stokers' Park (52,000)
Perhaps one of the most unique Tumbran stadiums, Stokers' Park — officially the WesternOil Power Station, but adopting this as its original name for sponsorship purposes — is built from the remains of a converted factory. It provides one of the most unique stadium-going experiences because of this; Stokers' Park is often referred to as the "smokehouse of Western football". With an exterior of red brick, large glass windows which now hold murals to the Fontwell Rovers, and with chimneys that puff out smoke on matchdays, Stokers' Park presents a uniquely industrial view on Tumbran football and where most of its clubs originated. It does get a little hot on the inside, however.

MILLSBURGH
One of Tumbra's 'forgotten cities', Millsburgh was the home of the now-flagging Tumbran steel industry; it now potters on, though the chemicals industry still goes strong in the north. It's probably the least tourist-friendly city out of the eleven host cities — no dedicated airport, nothing really exciting to do on the surface — but there is the National Museum of Steel here. And bridges. Lots of bridges. The city can get fairly cold, but one thing the city does excel in is the sheer amount of flora in its borders; it's shed most of its dreary reputation gained in the previous century, and the streets are lined with trees and grass. In autumn, it's really pretty. In summer, they do provide a good amount of shade from the sun.

Two Rivers Stadium (42,000)
The Two Rivers Stadium is a fantastic multi-purpose stadium located in the very heart of Millsburgh. Appropriately situated at the fork of two rivers that defines Millsburgh, the stadium is a circular, concrete affair with entry ramps that hug its exterior. It may look dated — certainly a fresh coat of paint on the bare concrete wouldn't go amiss — but the acoustics inside provide a ear-rumbling affair for those lucky enough to visit.

RIDGEWELL
A northern powerhouse, Ridgewell used to be the gateway to the world for Tumbran coal and steel; but with manufacturing fleeing to less expensive countries, and the coal mines closing thanks to The Eighties (and a focus on renewables this century), it's struggled to redefine itself. It's still the largest city in the North, though, and an effort to pivot the city towards tech and research has given it a new lease of life. For tourists, the main attraction in this area is the historic Wyndham Castle, located on the outskirts of the city; it's been stunningly well preserved, and historical demonstrations of medieval life occur every Saturday. Helps that a flea market sets up shop every weekend there too. This is probably one of the coldest cities in the country, too.

Kensington Stadium (46,000)
Built in the 1990s to great fanfare, the Kensington Stadium is a more utilitarian affair than most; simple, steel columns line the stadium's exterior, and a flat, rectangular roof covers spectators. Everything about this stadium seems to be rectangular; the roof, the exterior columns; even the four taller steel spires that provide support for the roofs at each end seem to be extremely rectangular. This makes seating extremely tight, however; and adds a lot to the atmosphere of matches.

NANTWICH
A naval city through and through, Nantwich essentially made its name from two things: shipbuilding and having a naval base on its outskirts. Both industries, perhaps miraculously, survive to the present day; and Nantwich has always had a more gritty, subdued vibe to it. That hasn't stopped it from becoming one of Tumbra's largest cities in the midwest; and it helps that the food here's cheap, as well. For attractions: Deep-dish "Nantwich-style pizza" may seem like a cultural travesty to anyone from outside the state (to say nothing of the Grande Cucinans, who steadfastly refuse to refer to it as "pizza" and prefer the term "pie"), but it's a refreshing take on the ever-popular dish, invented, ironically, by someone from Grande Cucina who couldn't find a proper pizza pan when he first arrived in the city.

Nantwich Stadium (64,000)
Widely renowned for the four helical ramps around each side of the edifice and imposing roof structure with black girders jutting out on each end, the Nantwich Stadium is home to FC Inter Nantwich; and is an imposing home to one of the league's strongest teams. With its four sides rising high above the players, the stands can almost feel like they're closing in on the players. An imposing mental challenge, indeed.

CLARK
A city known for its culture — cathedrals, clothes, theatres, and museums — Clark is known for being much more highbrow than its neighbour Nantwich, and those who can't stand the working-class vibe of Nantwich will enjoy Clark. Beware, though, of the exorbitant prices nearly everywhere; from restaurants to shopping malls (pay a visit to the Clark City Gallery, the country's oldest shopping mall), everything meant for the upper classes will make you pay through the nose for it. It's also home to one of the country's oldest universities; making the city also a place of revered learning. This is the place of Tumbran high fashion, and of the Clark Symphonic Orchestra (CSO). With the city surprisingly spared from most of the Civil War, the city's 15th-century architecture survives to this day.

Clark City Arena (63,000)
Known for its faux-neoclassical columns adorning its outside surface, the Clark City Arena - referred to as the Colosseum, colloquially, is a unique experience for most visitors. With the pitch itself set below the stadium, the shadow of the stadium's main building makes games in this open-air arena cooler than it is, providing a better matchday experience for most people. It's perhaps the only stadium in the country to have its pitch beneath sea level.

COUNO
Couno is Tumbra's largest city — there's a little bit of something for everyone here. Go for a long walk along the majestic Promenade, complete with statue walks (there's a park with busts of every Prime Minister of the country, with a short blurb of their achievements or lack thereof); or head up the hill on the opposite side of the skyline and stadium for a bit of nature. Don't miss the majestic Couno Harbour Bridge, though it's pretty difficult to do that; it's literally everywhere in the city's marketing, and opportunities exist to climb up the bridge. Seafood lovers should pay a visit to the Couno Fish Market, where the day's freshest catches are hauled in every morning for hungry tourists and shoppers alike. Looking for history? Visit the aptly-named Old City, where brick-and-mortar department stores still survive; and marvel at how narrow the streets are. As for nightlife, by far and away Couno's most famous nightclub is B*A*S*H, located on the 50th to 53rd floors of the Stevenson Tower. Then further marvel at how racing drivers manage to slalom cars through these streets every September, when the Couno Grand Prix takes place. Further inland, there's Tumbra's biggest amusement park, Galaxy Studios (one of three in the country), complete with rides from your favourite entertainment franchises. Head east, and out of the state, to enter the small state of Harren; it's here that gambling is the state's largest industry, and you can lose yourself in whiling your money away.

Couno Port Stadium (54,500)
The Couno Port Stadium is distinctive enough that it forms part of the Couno skyline by itself. Located on a wharf, the stadium itself was recently reconstructed in 2016, which expanded its capacity to the 54,500 it is today. Home to the Couno Rangers, with one of the most passionate supporter fanbases in Tumbra, the unique location on the harbourfront provides a unique opportunity for many a football fan. Watch out for the single-tier Red Wall located behind the west goal; that's where you'll see some of the most impressive fan displays in the country.

Wrenchwelt Stadium (42,000)
Wrenchwelt Stadium, located further inland and on the west side of the city, is rather older and run-down; but still has a wonderful atmosphere. Home to West Couno United, the long-suffering west-side local rivals of the more famous and by far more successful Rangers, the stadium might look a bit more run-down than its more modern and refurbished neighbour — especially with its southern stand being disconnected from the other three — but it's still packed with fans to the brim every time the Pilots go onto the field.

Kanzlia, formally recognised as Gracious Kanzlian State, is an island ceremonial kingdom on the far north of Esportiva. The country is divided into 10 provinces. Its main island, Kalta, consists of nearly 85% of the country's population whilst the smaller islands of Serentia and the Kureii islands makes up the rest. The seat of power in Kanzlia is Szbedansk, which just so happens to house the largest port. It’s followed by the cities of Kotr, Mistralis, and Ibsia.

Kanzlia is known to most Esportivans as that country that builds every ship floating (slight exaggeration) and for its eel-eating inhabitants. Other than that the country is well known for its maritime history, ecosystem, and the cold.

The Kanzlian Football Association (Also known as Voetbal Vereniging Kanzlia) was founded in 1900 but Kanzlian Football, in its current pyramid, was only finalised in the 1990s. Prior to this, a double league system was utilised. Anyhow, football is by far the most popular sport in Kanzlia with stadiums jam-packed full in every match of the season. Kanzlia with its history of hardships and prolonged periods of misery has resulted in a deep connection between the sport and Kanzlian society. The culture of the sport is one of fiery passion but also with a noticeable aspect of humbleness. A pundit said that Kanzlians are the sorest of losers during the 90 minutes, but once the game ends they switch back to normal often with an optimistic mood regardless of the result.

Kanzlia plays its official games in the Stadia Szbedansk, a relatively modern 53,280 seater stadium.

Xat’i and Pterons mature faster than humanoids but also have shorter lifespans. They reach adulthood around the age of 3, considered at their prime between 5 and 15, will think about retirement around their mid-to-late 20’s and their life expectancy is around 55.
Note on gender classification:
Gender in Paradystopia falls into three categories across five classifications. The categories are male, female and non-binary, with male and female both subdivided into cisgendered and electively gendered. As such, 'Mc' equates to a cisgendered male, and 'Fe' would equate to an electively gendered female (or, more commonly known throughout the multiverse as a transgender woman.) For the most part, the average Paradystopi* would only state their gender category when asked. Full classifications are included here for completeness.

*By average Paradystopi, I refer to the human population. The Pterons and Xat'i will just give their biological sex and couldn't really care less if their perceived gender appears contrary to this. Sjiu is a truly outstanding goalkeeper, and the best player in the Paradystopi squad by a fair margin. With, for want of better terminology, cat-like reflexes and agility, her shot-stopping is second-to-none. Despite her relatively small stature, her ability to pounce through the air means she can dominate her penalty area against strikers twice her size as well as cover a much larger percentage of her net than would seem possible in one-on-one situations. Her main drawbacks are that she enjoys playing the sweeper keeper role and has been known to be caught in no-man's-land when the team lose possession, and that she will almost always opt to punch the ball away rather than catch it which can lead to giving possession straight back to the attackers.

There are few words to summarise Jim, though 'An enigma in penguin form' is probably the closest. Outwardly, there would seem to be little remarkable about this penguin and his inclusion in the team liable to be disregarded as 'Paradystopia being Paradystopia'. However, Jim is brilliant at what he does, and that is being in the right place at the right time. You think your attacker is in space? Nope, there's Jim. You think your winger just made a beautiful cross-field pass to switch play and continue the attack? Nope, there's Jim. You think you've got a midfielder free on the edge of the box to hammer home a screamer? Yeah? Nope, Jim's there to block it. How he does it, no-one has the foggiest but you can be utterly certain that he will be a frustrating thorn in the side of your attempts to attack us.
Jim is the team's vice-captain, despite no-one being able to understand him. Now that's Paradystopia being Paradystopia ...

3. LCB - Beren Doggle

With the retirement of Patrick Smith-Cocker, Beren Doggle steps up into the first team. An imposing hulk of a defender, Beren adopts the role of the hard-hitting defender, policing the box and making opponent forwards very aware of his presence through his physicality.

4. RCB - Janika van der Stedd
Human(Fe) - 30 - Conway Wanderers FC (MYR)
Janika van der Stedd is a wily and tactically astute defensive player. She is a skillful tackler, as well as being known in her home team for having good vision to play the right passes to start attacks flowing. She is particularly useful from long range dead ball opportunities being more than capable of whipping a free kick from around the half way line dangerously into the box. Whilst she's unlikely to take any of the closer range free kicks, she definitely an option to attempt to hammer home a screamer from 35 yards out.

Taking the reins of captain from Anja Bortland in the Campionato Esportiva 41, Kiaren is an able defensive midfielder with invaluable skills as a playmaker, and whose aptitude for long passing makes him an asset to the team. Cool, calm, and collected, a steady selection for team captain.

6. CM - Leonard Lugga
Human(Mc) - 24 - Sturm Havn (TAX)
Following his transfer to Sturm Havn, Leonard Lugga solidifies his first team place in his secondary position in the middle of the field. A possible justification for this is the physical presence Leonard brings to the midfield. He is a bold and powerful player who isn't afraid of imposing himself upon opponents and taking his tackles a little on the 'meaty' side. Providing his can tweak his ability at crossing the ball into playing long balls forward, he should be able to supply ample threats to account for his selection.

7. LM - Sosjian
Xat'i(Mc) - 11 - SC Oldetoun New Newetoun
Of all the Xat'i in the squad, Sosjian is probably the most tactically aware. This could well be due to him playing his football in a predominantly humanoid team rather than amongst other Xat'i. As a result, he is also the most likely of the Xat'i (other than Sjiu) to actually seek to pass when in possession. He has a strong positional awareness which, coupled with a rapid turn of speed, could see him winning interceptions in enemy territory or simply being quick to strike on a careless pass. Given that his sheer pace alone will make him a nuisance to mark, the decision to play him as a winger could be a masterstroke.

8. RM - Hleqrru
Xat'i(Mc) - 8 - Xat'i Paradystopi
Retaining his place in the national team, Hleqrru now finds himself on the right flank. Given the laissez-faire approach to formations of the Xat'i, this is no major issue. Hleqrru is at his best when given the opportunity to challenge defenders and move with the ball, and it is hoped that playing on the wing will provide this. As he is used to playing a more defensively-minded role within Xat'i Paradystopi, he is the most likely of the Xat'i starters to actually track back and will likely gravitate to something more akin to a wing-back. Expect to see him tirelessly chasing opponents the full length of the right wing, looking to gain possession and begin his own attacks.

Given the high intensity nature of the Xat'i tactics, it's very feasible that the two Xat'i subs will see playing time. There's also the possibly they could see some playing time upfront depending upon how a match pans out.

9. CF - Sebastien Borgen

After an impressive Campionato Esportiva campaign, Sebastien Borgen has firmly warranted his place as national team centre forward. An archetypal big, strong forward, his height and strength allow him to act as a target man as well as hold up play in the opposition half and act as a go-between amidst the dynamic attacks and mazy runs of the Xat'i. One of his best attributes is his intelligence; knowing when he can draw a foul, knowing when to release a team-mate to best foil the offside trap, knowing whether or not to take that extra step. He can be a handful to fend off, and with all the Xat'i attacking options, that's the last thing any opponent needs.

10. LF - Rhiagr
Xat'i(Fc) - 9 - Xat'i Paradystopi
Like her other Xat'i brethren, Rhiagr is quick, agile and without fear when challenging opposition defenders. Where she distinguishes herself from the other Xat'i is her ability in the air. With jumping prowess that rivals Sjiu, Rhiagr can prove very difficult to contain during corners, or wide dead-ball opportunities and can often somehow rise above the crowd to send the ball goalward.

11. RF - Rsheu
Xat'i(Mc) - 5 - Xat'i Paradystopi
Despite his young age, Rsheu is making waves up front for Xat'i Paradystopi and was the FLoP9's leading goalscorer by a ridiculous margin. Nippy and tenacious, he is a tricky customer to deal with for even the most experienced defender. On top of this, he possesses a deft finish and an unquenchable thirst for scoring. Some question his lack of maturity and the hubris this brings but when he can back up his talents with cold, hard statistics in the league, it's hard to make a worthwhile argument for not having him in the squad.

Iona Schlippe once again finds herself as the impact sub who can bring a different style of play to the field than Borgen. Of the other three, they're all youngsters who've made strong starts in the league and if they can translate that youthful vigour and enthusiasm to the international stage, well, who knows what's possible.

Pepé Papa
Human(Mc) - 60 - of Qyzzyxzyan Draconic Territories
Very little is known about Pepé Papa beyond that he apparently used to be the Pope of one of the islands off to the north of Paradystopia. Something about a dragon too. His spur-of-the-moment hiring has raised many eyebrows amongst the Paradystopi footballing community who, whilst hoping for something surprising, are inclined to think that the hiring committee just found some random junkie to put in charge because the ensuing chaos will likely make for good television, or something like that. There's actually a good many conspiracy theories doing the rounds as to whom this mysterious new manager is with the singular point they agree on being that 'former Dragonpope' is just too stupid to be the truth.

Style Modifier = +0.03

Whilst Pepé Papa might have some overblown and in-depth tactical explanations of how he expects the team to play, the main gist of his approach boils down to a semi-aggressive Route One strategy with an emphasis on expansive Wing Play. We will be constantly looking to play long balls to either release one of the Xat'i players in behind your defence, or give one of your defenders the unenviable task of challenging Sebastien Borgen in the air, who'll be looking to feed a Xat'i player into space. We aim to run your defence ragged until they invariably (hopefully) break.
Defensively, we will fall back to sit and soak up pressure, but with an eye on the next quick breakaway once we reclaim possession. As such, we are probably a little susceptible to counter-attacking teams (or counter-counter-attacks), but we're confident enough in our goalkeeper and Jim's peculiar ability to be in the right place at the right time to nullify the majority of these threats.

Generalised roles:

#1 & #2:
Sjiu and Jim will play as sweepers at the back, marshalling the defence and covering where needs to be covered.

#3, #4, #5, & #6
Doggle, van der Stedd, Schlippe, and Lugga will form a sort of defensive square. They will try to maintain their positions more rigidly than others on the field, though can flatten out into a back four if the situation calls for it. They will look to hold possession between themselves until one of them spots an appropriate long-ball.

#7, #8, #10, & #11
The roving Xat'i attack force. Sosjian and Hleqrru will look for spaces out wide to run into. Rhiagr and Rsheu will look for any spaces behind your defence and opportunities to beat the offside trap. Good luck marking all four of them. They will press your players in your half too. If we could get them to track back and pitch in with defensive duties reliably, we'd have a truly problematic team for any opponent.

Sebastien Borgen's role is kind of a utility forward. Generally, he'll act as a classic centre forward but depending on what the Xat'i are up to, he could also drop into more of a false 9 position, or some sort of attacking sweeper.

Somewhere, in the remote corners of the multiverse, there is a small cave. Its name is only spoken of in hushed whispers, and many question if it truly exists or if it is merely an old knight's tale meant to scare young squires into behaving. The cave is guarded by beasts of legendary ferocity, ravenous hunger, and the fluffiest blood-soaked fur. The bones of their victims are strewn about the entrance, a warning to those who would dare approach it. Out of the shrouding mists, a new terror emerges...

Nicknamed "the Rabbits" by their opponents, exactly how this team of diminutive creatures came to be participating in the World Cup remains an unsolved mystery. One knight who ventured near the Cave of Caerbannog before bravely running away reported seeing a number of rabbits playing what appeared to be a game he called "pawball" with the disembodied skull of an earlier victim. This game allegedly resembled the sport known throughout the wider multiverse as "football".

It has been suggested that a team under the name of Caerbannog previously participated in qualifying for World Cup 97, although these rumors remain unsubstantiated by credible scholars and should be treated with a degree of skepticism. That team, at least according to reports, did not perform very well, finishing last in their group. This should not be taken as a reliable indicator of future performance (assuming that team did exist), as more than a few foolish adventurers have previously ventured near the Cave of Caerbannog, dismissed its guardians as harmless, and paid the ultimate price for their hubris.

Snugglebun the Crimson Shadow - Goalkeeper ♂
A dark-furred rabbit whose eyes glow a faint red in low light, Snugglebun moves about with an eerie silence and darts between the posts with almost supernatural speed to deny his opponents.

Hopscotch the Harbinger - Defender ♀
Tawny-furred and sleek, Hopscotch anticipates her opponents' every move with and is known for sweeping players off their feat before they realize what hit them.

Flopsy the Defiler - Defender ♀
A grey rabbit with shaggy fur and long droopy ears, one of which is torn, Flopsy plays particularly rough and will sometimes take a second swipe at her opponents once they're down.

Thumper the Tormentor - Defender ♂
A muscular, white-furred enforcer whose tackles hit like a hammer, Thumper is known for taking shots at players off the ball when the referee isn't looking, and sometimes when they are.

Nibblesworth the Red-Toothed - Midfielder ♂
Ginger-furred with a savage toothy smile, Nibblesworth frequently leaves tooth marks on the ball after heading it, to say nothing of his opponents.

Buttercup the Brutal - Midfielder ♀

The precise location of Caerbannog is difficult to pin down. Some suggest that it is hidden amongst the isles of Arrosia, others say it lies in a forgotten corner of Rushmore, and a handful claim to have found the cave in Esportiva. Regardless, for those poor souls unfortunate to have to journey there, they will somehow find their way to Caerbannog, but what cannot be certain is that they will return.

Upon arrival in the vicinity of Caerbannog, your team of adventurers will be guided to the Mouth of Caerbannog by Tim the Enchanter. Once there, you will face a collection of unassuming creatures whose cuddly appearances have deceived more victims than any King would dare count. Watch your step, for the field you will fight on is covered in the teeth-marked bones of the casualties of Caerbannog. Your band of misfit travelers will fight alone, for none who are not destined to face the perils within Caerbannog may travel there.

RP injuries to my players: You can try, but they're shockingly difficult to harm without blessed armaments from distant lands.

After all, even if you manage to snuff out a few of them, they will be quickly replaced. These things breed like rabbits.

Manager: HAN Ruoyang (Yuezhou), 67
Han found himself on the hot seat during the last tournament, but an unusually strong showing by the Elephants in which they managed to stun co-hosts and co-favourites Katzeburg in the Round of 16 saved his job for now. The Elephants were routed by Paradystopia in the Quarterfinals, but South Newlandians are hopeful the team can follow up with another run into the knockouts. The defensively-minded Yue manager had gotten his big break with Beian Athletic, before finding success at the national team level with Guanacasteca for almost a decade. Tactically, he runs a 3-5-2 formation. He tends to rely on a center back working as a deep-lying playmaker; coincidentally the same system that had gotten him success in his playing days. This is his fifth tournament with South Newlandia, but he’s still looking to take the team to the semi-finals for the first time.

Expected starting eleven:

GK: Harold King (26) SC Oldetoun New Newetoun (Paradystopia)
That King immediately got a chance between the sticks after very limited exposure in Paradystopia says nothing good about the other options, but King has legitimately established himself as a great goalkeeper with SC ONN. The Lexen City native has collecting clean sheets, and while his competition can be questioned (honestly, at this point, not even that, really), that’s not true for his powerful long goal kicks and reaction time.

LB: Matias Vaz (30) Zeiven City (The Kytler Peninsulae)
Vaz is playing more of a winger role with Zeiven, but will be expected to stay back more with the Elephants. Still, his great performances in the Peninsulae have more than earned him a starting spot with the team. He’s not really a threat with headers on corners or free kicks, but he can aid with some counter-attacks if he’s allowed to. He’s also expected to mentor a very young defense around him. It’s a lot to ask, but Vaz has conquered many challenges before. He’s been one of the best players on the team for a surprising amount of time, now, even after a bit of a down season with Zeiven.

CB: Isaac Max-Chapman (22) De Vursen FK (Solgavden)
Chapman has been a surprising selection for the national team, but he earned the starting job with strong performances in Solgavden. The speedy Walstreim native made a name for himself as a good shot blocker on the defense on a team that was in play to win the Kongensliga until the final day. He’s going to be looking for the guidance of the more experienced defenders on either side of him, as a lot rests on his shoulders; but he has the talent to become a top player for this side.

RB: Olomunyak Bano (28) Blubeck FC (Katzeburg)
Blubeck pulled off a nice recovery, and Bano has been a very impactful defender for the team. He’s been a Katzeburg pioneer for the Elephants, with players now following into his footsteps. Together with Vaz, the fullbacks represent a strength of the Elephants, even though Bano wasn’t part of the first 11 in their great last run.

LDM: Gabriel Leal (23) BSSC Driessche (Taxhavn)
Another new face on the team, Leal didn’t immediately find the right home for himself. After the relegation of Raven Thöni, he’s moved on to a different team in Taxhavn, but he’s looked very solid as a midfielder for either team so far. He still needs a lot more experience, too.

RM: Jacqueline Behera (31) Saevaroy Town FC (Tikariot)
Behera returns to the squad after a six-year absence, having re-established herself as a starter in one of the strongest leagues in the multiverse. A move to Saevaroy for 1.5 million has certainly helped her career, but in the ever unpredictable TPL, her job is never safe. Her last tournament was, coincidentally, the last CE that employed this very same format.

LW: Noah Vicente (21) Rapid Waldstein (Katzeburg)
Vicente is also part of the recent youth movement, the Chekar native was a surprisingly impactful part for Rapid. The youngster recorded five goals on a team that otherwise couldn’t escape the basement of the KNL, standing out as a threat especially from set pieces.

AM: Marta Schuster (19) Et Terminal (Bonusia)
Schuster is the youngest player selected by the Elephants for this tournament, and she’ll get a chance to impress in the first 11 right away. The midfielder from Elephant Valley was one of the first international players to make the jump to the Bonusian First Division, and was quickly able to establish herself as a top player with Les Fletxes, playing a major part in the team’s run all the way to the international spots as a consistent goalscorer. Though she is one of the youngest, her talent has been on full display, and a lot of hope for the future of South Newlandian football rests on her shoulders.

RW: Patrick McMora Jr. (25) VV Szbedansk (Kanzlia)
McMora Jr. is the son of one of the best South Newlandian football players of all time, who also played on the right side of the midfield. He’s been a consistent scoring threat in Kanzlia, and has been improving rapidly there to quickly become one of the Elephants’ best players. Inexperience still shines through on occasion, but he’s proven he can fill the shoes of his father, who played a role in some of the biggest South Newlandian successes of the past. At this point, McMora Junior is well on his way to having an excellent career of his own.

ST: Lia Suarez (20) New Newetoun Saltquarry SC (Paradystopia)
Lia Suarez was a late addition to the last squad as a teenager, and ever since, she’s continued to stun everyone with her rapid development with NNS SC. She’s shown an eye for the goal and an ability to finish as well as play any role her team needs her to. Having excelled in the FLoP9 and with appearances at the most recent CE, she’s earned her way to the starting 11, and is widely seen as the next big thing in South Newlandia. She would never bite someone.

ST: Aadi Seidel (30) Zeiven City (The Kytler Peninsulae)
Seidel has been performing admirably in the Kytler Peninsulae, becoming a strong scoring threat for Zeiven, finding a way one time after another. There are some weaknesses to his game, but he’s quickly become an Elephants’ main-stay. With his extraordinary fitness, he’ll rarely ever be subbed off. He’s also ascended to the captain of the squad some time ago, being their leader on and off the field; surprisingly, he is already one of the oldest players on this very young squad.

Bench:
Note that the Elephants are carrying 26 players, just as most other teams. However, some substitutes that are unlikely to play a material role have been omitted.

GK: Carl Wright (22) GreenLeave Ritherton (Anewkansas)
Wright’s been noted to have developed a lot with Ritherton, and will be the Ellies’ second option between the sticks. Like many backup goalkeepers, that means he’ll mostly spend time learning and hoping to eventually get a chance as the number 1.

??: Robert Daman (27) Bul Khungur Miners FC (Tikariot)
Daman originally left the country as a left back, but has taken up a lot more offensive roles in recent years with Bul Khungur, running through the usual development cycle in reverse. Has surprised many by being a South Newlandian and actually valuable for a Tikariotian club after spending many years learning in their Academy. The Elephants had experimented with him at Right Back, believing that to be his natural fit in the squad, but with Bano back in form, Daman has lost his starting spot despite continued solid play with the Miners, so if he's going to be subbed on, he's going to be somewhere above the grass, further details pending.

CB: Raghav Pal (23) Florley Garden City (The Kytler Peninsulae)
The Elephants are clearly hoping lighting will strike again with Elephants in the Peninsulae, Raghav Pal has all the physical tools to be great, but hasn’t quite put it together yet in Rushmore. He’ll have a chance to learn from some not-much-more experienced players and maybe earn some more minutes on the big stage.

LB: Ali Patel (26) Blubeck FC (Katzeburg)
Patel is another player representing Blubeck, and was a signing that ultimately couldn’t quite live up to expectations there, at least not yet. He’s still been solid, and will be a good defender off the bench if he sees his number called.

AM: Alessio Lombardo (33) Nova Aegis (Saint Eleanor)
Lombardo left Elephant Valley to join one of the only even smaller countries that were an option. He’s been good for Nova Aegis, who haven’t been as good to him, and has become both a scoring threat and good passer for the pachyderms. He’s actually the oldest player on the team, now, and with a lot of younger players looking good recently, he’s lost his starting spot for now; giving him a chance to be an impactful player off the bench to try and regain a place in the first 11.

RM: Jeremy Collins-Lewis (28) Sarvusdalamoive (Abanhfleft)
After missing the last CE, a move to Sarvusdalamoive has reinvigorated the career of Collins-Lewis. With many strong players on the right side, he’ll have a tough time getting significant minutes.

CM: Aurora-Triana Bergmann (22) Rapid Waldstein (Katzeburg)
The Elephant Valley native also joined Rapid Waldstein, and has developed quite good chemistry with Vicente at the Katzeburgian side. If Bergmann makes it on the pitch, it’ll likely be alongside her club teammate.

LM: Gerald Baker (31) Vna-Chuhul Ravens FC (Tikariot)
One fun consequence of the TPL is that occasionally, players show up with exactly one good game, putting their national team on notice. The Ravens haven’t really been able to re-capture that, but the Elephants hope they might.

ST: Andres Diaz (20) Camp Bulich Dynamite (Anewkansas)
Diaz only narrowly saw the Reds survive the season in the APL, but they did make it. Diaz was one part of that, with a strong season for the young striker that flashed a lot of potential.

ST: Avril Ludwig-Nikolaeva (25) Axmund City (Katzeburg)
Most South Newlandian footballers don’t really have a development story, but Avril does. Holding both Chromatik and South Newlandian citizenship and having played for the University of Myana, Ludwig-Nikolaeva also appeared for Chromatika in various international youth tournaments at the U18 and U21 level. That resulted in getting signed by Axmund City, a move to Esportiva that’s gotten the striker closer to South Newlandia. Having shown a lot of flash with plenty of goals, Ludwig-Nikolaeva earned a spot on the Elephants, who’ve beaten Chromatika to the punch for the first senior caps. Definitely one of the likely substitution options, especially if the Elephants find themselves needing a goal late.

ST: David Serrano (27) Eielo Sunlight (Abanhfleft)
Much like Collins-Lewis, his career was revived by a move to a different team. Serrani has been a key player for the Sunlight, but isn’t expected to see a lot of minutes in his first international tournament; though that might change if he can keep up his form.

THE COLONY OF THE FHULGHAMOUS PENINSULA
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula (Full-Gah-Moose) was first established on 6 December 2008, when Fleftic explorers landed on what was then a previously undiscovered continent. These explorers landed on a large peninsula that they named Fhulghamous because of its rich and lush green forests. One of the explorers then fell into an old mine shaft while exploring the peninsula and discovered that the entire peninsula was lying on top of one of the biggest diamond deposits ever discovered by mankind. Once the explorers announced their discovery to the Fleftic government, the Democratic Republic Army Corps of Engineers was quickly dispatched to help speed up the establishment of the colony by helping in constructing settlements and assisting in constructing mining facilities to extract the diamonds within the land.

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula was officially established as a colony of the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft on 6 September 2010 following the signing of Democratic Republic Act No. 2340. The colony's capital would be Port Thimpodopoulos, named after Sergeant Major Pythagoras Thimpodopoulos of the Army Corps of Engineers, who tragically died of a heart attack during the construction of the settlement that would eventually bear his name. Today, Port Thimpodopoulos has a population of ten million, accounting for just under half of the total population of the colony. Other cities in the colony were Besanza, Tadoki, Haritzaga City and Thereisnogodabad, home of Multiverse Premier League club Thereisnogodistan FC.

The colony is under the leadership of Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano, brother of Minister of Colonial Affairs Demetrios Kulbano. His rule saw the Fhulghamous Peninsula's ascent to being one of the most economically-productive colonies of the Democratic Republic, but due to the colony's distance from the mainland Governor Kulbano is slowly beginning to treat the colony as his own personal fiefdom. This was one of the reasons why he had decided to send forth a petition to send a national team to the Di Bradini Cup, the Multiverse's top under-21 football competition. Feel free to pick a starting XI and formation. When in doubt, you may run with a basic 4-4-2/4-3-3. Plans are for the team to play pretty narrow - Irithoren doesn't have a lot of flat, grassy areas, so our league plays on fields that are as small as the laws about field dimensions allow - and adventurous and a little individualistic.

Strategy and tactics are something every team in the league steps on to the field with, but also the first thing that goes out of the window when the going gets tough. Obviously they don't entirely abandon their positions - defenders will still line up behind midfielders, etc - but an equaliser is scored on willpower and daring, not on professional fouls and back passes.

That said, the best three players in Irithoren might well be the defensive trio of Sa'id, Kawkab, and Qahwa. The Jerboas are lucky to have such a robust core at the back. It buys the rest of the team so much space and time, in particular the emerging and likely equally talented midfield trio of Shafuq, Hajar, and Sabar. Sabar has run this team's pass distribution for ages and is happy to get some help, no matter if it's from an unlikely club as Al-Hudud, with Hajar first appearing on the scene and later Shafuq as well. The three are perfectly capable to start attacks and break down opponents but like to have a fourth member as a janitor, to allow Shafuq some room to dribble, Hajar to send ambitious passes, you know the drill. Up front, Hamdan and Saatir are a great duo, usually backed up by the last remaining Sujaa sibling (her brother retired from international football prior to this CE). The Sujaa family put this nation on the map when it comes to football, and it's time a new generation takes over. Can they get the team over the hump?

The Blue Cats are the national representatives of Katzeburg, which are entering their fourth Campionato Esportiva after having co-hosted the previous edition of the competition. The team is nicknamed after an incredibly rare breed of the country's national animal, the cat, which was long-rumoured to exist in small numbers in the Campbellnia National Park along the country's north-east coast.

While Katzeburg is a young nation, football has solidified its place as the most popular sport in the nation, thanks in no small part to the heroics of the national team on the multiversal stage. Initial hotspots of the sport were in the more industrial north of the nation, encompassing the nation's central capital Katzestadt, the heavy industrial port city of Inverhaven, and the north-eastern logging city of Axmund, but the growing status of the game's popularity has seen teams from all across the country sprout up in recent years, as seen by the ever-growing number of teams entering the Katzeburg Cup, the nation's domestic cup competition, achieving a high mark of 128 teams in the most recent fifth edition of the competition.

The national team's first ever manager Becka Haberkorn leads the nation into her fourth Campionato Esportiva as manager in what is already being rumoured as her final competition in charge of the team, with a contract due to expire at the end of the competition and a renewal becoming a hot topic of debate in Katzeburgian media. So Haberkorn's 25-person squad for the Campionato Esportiva - held in Tumbra which was one of two nations Katzeburg kicked off their international history in as part of the 84th Baptism of Fire - is one which by and large does away with much of the long-term shackles bolting down the team as they look to embrace a potential new wave of change.

The headline move in the starting XI is the Wruck replacement - after 124 games, the Katzestadt Rovers forward won't be taking the field for Katzeburg, and Haberkorn has decided to place her faith in Elvin Greenberg to make the spot his own. Since departing Axmund United years earlier, the striker has come into his own over in Esportivan neighbours Kanzlia, picking up goals for Ibsia City before a big money move to VV Szbedansk to take charge in their frontline, and the striker has delivered so far this season alongside his fellow Katzeburgian squad mate Beauden Moore. The 25-year-old will be under pressure to hit the ground running though, but with three goals in his previous seven national team appearances, there is potential to solidify his spot in the side with a strong performance alongside Lloyd Field - who will likely move into the key attacking role for the lineup in Tumbra.

The other major tweak Haberkorn has made has been in the inconsistent backline for Katzeburg, with Elicia Morton recalled to the starting lineup after a cycle away from the squad and a strong domestic season for a resurgent Katzestadt Rovers. Monday Mynatt drops out of the starting lineup, as does Erik Clarkson following seasons of domestic struggle for Wolfenholm United and Inverhaven City respectively.

But the biggest changes to the squad come in the form of the bolters, as Haberkorn has looked to reward breakout domestic seasons in the KNL with spots in the Katzeburgian squad. There are four uncapped players who made the cut this time around, with three of them coming from shock league champions Coalbrook Athletic. Roman Becke - a previously highly-touted talent who was on the verge of a move out of Katzeburg in the off-season prior to the domestic league transfer window slamming shut earlier than expected - has been called up for depth in goals, while a breakout season for youngster Arnie Gunther sees the player make the squad at the young age of 19. Wilkie Schindler, who many hailed for his crucial goals for the Miners across the campaign as being vital to the side lifting the league, has also made the cut - at the age of 29 he is one of the older players to make the cut. Starla Baumer from Inverhaven Ironworks is the other fresh face for the squad, with the 18 year old coming off a great season for the runners-up to secure her spot in the wider 25.

At the team announcement, manager Becka Haberkorn was coy on her own future, but expressed confidence in the squad assembled. "Today's not the day to talk about my own future or leading this team beyond our time in Tumbra," Haberkorn said. "This is about a team which could really go out and make the nation proud at a time where we need it more than ever in this sport. It's hard to have those discussions with the team as to who was going to replace Drake, but I have every confidence in Elvin, Lloyd, and the rest of the attacking talent we have in this squad that they'll be able to make that change feel totally seamless.

"We're in a really difficult group this time around and despite being a Pot 1 - all our opponents are quality sides we need to be at our best for if we want to have a deep run here. There's no easy games in the Campionato Esportiva, and we want to keep that run of form we had during the Cup of Harmony going just a little bit longer."

Katzeburg kick off their Campionato Esportiva against Esportivan Darmen - a side they last faced at CE 40 in a 1-1 draw in South Newlandia - before taking on unranked Caerbannog. They will finish off their group stage with a clash against Hapilopper - the nation Katzeburg played their first ever international in back at the Baptism of Fire and a side the Blue Cats knocked out on penalties back in their debut CE run - in what promises to be a tense way to finish the group for a Katzeburg side looking to potentially end the Haberkorn era on a high.

Pepe Papa was fast regretting his decision to accept a friendly game of chess with his vice-captain Jim. It had been quite a while since he had played and he was understandably rusty in his strategy and knowledge of the rules. Kiaran Schlippe watched on, bemused at how his manager was being bested by a penguin, though he doubted he'd have better luck against the enigmatic seabird who had represented his country in this pursuit. The reason for the gathering in the modest seafront hotel in Couno had been to discuss game plans ahead of their campaign to better their previous showing of runners-up in the last Campionato though Jim's production of a travel chess-set had somewhat sidetracked proceedings.

"Kwwarrrk!"

Pepe was looking a little flustered so Kiaran sought to offer him a lifeline to escape a humbling loss.

"Sooo ... the group stage?"

"Group? ... oh, yes ... one minute ... hmmm ... if I move my knight, then ... gah, the queen'll pin it ... hmmm ..."

"Well, we start against Zalinivia, then Alanis Star, and finish against Malalaime. We faced Alanis Star the last time out and beat them. Given they seem to be the biggest threat of the group, we should be expecting to come out of the group on top, yes? So looking at, probably Fhulghamous Peninsula in first knock-out though Sangti and the FIlindo Isles, or even Kamijiro are possibilities. Group E looks a little tight."

Pepe was lost trying to find a way to avoid having his pawn structure obliterated.

"Hmm ... yes ... Fhulghamous Filindo Isles ... indeed ... curse that damn bishop ..."

"Boss? ..."

"Who? ... Oh, ermm ... yes, gameplans, indeed ... "

Pepe attempted to detach himself from the chess, though it was apparent his mind was in two places.

"Yes, group stage. Well, either way we'd be playing a group E team assuming we make it out the groups. Which we should, and then ... what if I move my king? Hmmm ... Sorry, sorry, yes. So ..."

"Tumbra? Yes, we're in Tumbra but, oh, you're thinking quarter-finals? Well, maybe we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. There's also a good chance we could come up against Katzeburg at that point too. We have beaten Tumbra before, but with this being on their home soil, I think I'd rather see us face Katzeburg."

"The Xat'i would love a chance to humble Katzeburg, or as they call it, 'The Land of False Advertising'. Moreso than they'd want some vengeance against Kanzlia in fact."

With a dramatic flourish, Pepe Papa moved a knight into the centre of the board. Jim took one look, and promptly moved a bishop into play.

Ever since the launch of the KWNS Vigilance, the Aletta Nowaki government and the Kanzlian Navy has poured plenty of resources to beef up the White Navy in order to meet its deadlines of having a functioning fleet in five years. Two years after the KWNS Vigilance was launched, the large hospital ship KWNS Aid was put into service. Two months after her sister ship KWNS Assistance was also put into service. Meanwhile the Kanzlian Navy has provided the White Navy with their ex-Resolute class Destroyers for service in the White Navy. KNS Respite and KNS Relentless, once the troublesome destroyers of the Kanzlian Navy was retrofitted and reconstructed to be a multi-purpose support vessel for the White Navy as the KWNS Respite and KWNS Relentless. Ever since then however, the Kanzlian Government and the Kanzlian Navy has paused construction for any larger vessels.

In the meantime however, the White Navy have also acquired two smaller support vessels which became known as the bakery ships of the White Navy. Today Laurina Hale and Aletta Nowaki attends its launching ceremony. It was the first time in a while the two was with each other outside of parliament.

After another period with the Isles having fallen under a fog and disappeared from the international scene, the Cyan-and-Gold have returned to international sport. They once again bring a defensively-oriented side to the Campionato, perhaps hoping that a stalwart back line can make up for their inexperience in international football as they travel to Tumbra. No one expects a third title - a respectable showing will have Licentians feeling positive.

Head Coach – Truinnean Chisholm – The 46 year old Chisholm formerly managed Abingdon Celtic, the most recent winners of the All-Parish Championship. As such, he’s brought his winning tactics, and a few of the APC winning players, along for the Campionato.

Arguably, how a Licentian side should look. The holding midfielder plays a vital role in this set-up. Defensively, they’ll drop back into the back line to act as a third centre half, particularly against better sides. Elephants get pecked at by birb

Ahead of the upcoming Campionato Esportiva in Tumbra, mindful of the short group stage, the South Newlandian Football Association did something other than just bidding on CEs for the first time in a while, choosing to arrange a friendly match with their long-time friends and allies from Vdara. Played in front of a modest crowd in the Stadium of Friendship in Elephant Valley, the Pachyderms were decisively routed by a one-to-five scoreline that nevertheless left the South Newlandians with some positive takeaways.

In the first half, it felt like a monumental Vdaran onslaught, with the Ellies trailing 0-4 despite Harold King probably being the best player on the pitch for the Elephants. Two goals by Fotellis and one each for La Rosa and Policastro meant the team of Moustakakos had put the game well out of reach before the break, but they could’ve probably scored 7 or 8 if King hadn’t made some great saves, including a spectacular one on a shot from the edge of the box by Fotellis that he somehow managed to scrape off the goal line. The Vdaran striker would get his, later, with a penalty and a nice header after a corner. The score for La Rosa was particularly beautiful, a nice half-volley that perfectly spun into the corner just out of reach of King.

The second half was much better for South Newlandia. Maybe that was due to the unwavering support of the South Newlandian fans, who cheered on the team even as it faced the worst halftime deficit in its history, or maybe because the Vdarans had chosen to take star players Stylianou, La Rosa and Fotellis off the pitch at half-time, but the game was a lot more even now, with both sides trading chances. After Schuster hit the crossbar after a nice dribbling, it was nevertheless the Birbs that rewarded themselves with another goal; once again on a penalty. This time, it was Littlikis beating King, sending him into the wrong corner.

The Elephants, who had by now made plenty of substitutions of their own, nevertheless continued playing, and would get their lone goal of the evening from a substitute as well, with Avril Ludwig-Nikolaeva recording the third goal this game by a dual-national after a nice pass by Schuster in the 78th minute to reach the 1-5 final scoreline. Avril looked very comfortable and had several more chances, and was one of the bright spots alongside King and Schuster; with the entire team also showing improvement in the second half as the new-look squad gained in-game experience together. The team must also be commended for never giving up even facing a hopeless deficit; with players like Schuster and Max-Chapman logging excellent distances for a friendly that was well out of hand early on, each of them playing their first ever game in green and yellow.

Beyond that, the Vdaran team currently ranks ahead of every single team in the upcoming CE in the world rankings. That means a win would have been quite unexpected, but it also signals that the SNFA is willing to play against top teams, and might have goals in mind that go beyond the upcoming tournament. For now, the team will travel to Straton, Tumbra for their CE group games, where they will open against frenemies TJUN-ia, before matches against Kita-Hinode and newcomers Apalatci, a nation that has already proven they can compete with the big guns when it comes to logo designers. The games will be held in The Eagles’ Club, with the Tumbran organisers inexplicably using their biggest stadium only on games with the one team that may struggle most to fill Tumbran seats, but it’ll still be an enjoyable comfort for the team.

And so, the end of an era had finally arrived. After Eshialand unexpectedly (or expectedly, depending on how little faith you have in the Owls' ability to succeed) crashed out of yet another World Cup group stage, failing to capture any more than a single point, Kenny Morgan decided it was finally time for him to hang up his hat after 13 cycles managing the Eshian squad. The Campionato had served as a training ground for Melissa Carey to take the reins of management, and starting with the 42nd edition, her transition to the full manager position would be completed. Morgan would remain as President of the Federation, but his role on the ground with the team was finally done.

Mel wasn't sure if she was ready to be the sole manager, but if anyone could do this, it was her. She was always better with a lot of the typical "manager-y" things that Kenny wasn't the biggest fan of, so he knew full well that she was ready, if only she could believe in herself, which is what the last couple of Campionati were all about — making her believe that she could do this job. While she didn't feel fully ready, she was as ready as anyone could ever be. Now, it was down to this team to carry on Kenny's vision, and Mel's management to bring the team to glory.

The stadium itself is a very modern facility, having been built back in 2021 in response to the Owls' incredible performance in the 75th Baptism of Fire, with a retractable roof in case of nasty weather (but don't expect to use it much).

Whether she's up for the task will be more or less determined by whether the Owls make it out of the group stage, which is definitely in question following the disasters that tend to befall them in small group formats such as these (cough cough every World Cup ever). And If You Know Your History... - Part I

The nation of Katzeburg is approaching the 25th year after the Katzeburgian Revolution - the event which would tear down the last shackles of the Katzeburgian Kaisers and give way to the modern day democracy and nation which now operates. To celebrate the occasion, the government has commissioned the marketing interns over at the Centre of Radical Adjustment of Culture in Katzeburg (CRACK) to provide a series of profiles about major Katzeburgian towns and cities to give visitors and potential tourists some form of basic information on which they can learn more about the town. The below is one such excerpt.

Waldstein

Waldstein is a city located in North-West Katzeburg and is the second largest city in the region after Lowport, situated an hour's drive south along the River Wald from Lowport. According to the AK20 census, the population of the city is 113,736 and the city is regarded as one of the most preserved in modern-day Katzeburg after surviving the Revolution relatively untouched. A popular tourist destination for those looking to see what high-society life was like for Katzeburgians prior to the Revolution, Waldstein has developed into one of the nation's most culturally diverse spots.

History

Historical records suggest that the earliest known settlement in Waldstein existed at least from BK1300 onwards, with documents suggesting Kaiser Aythal the Ancient invaded a settlement along the River Wald named 'Waldstyn' during his campaign to claim the Katzeburgian throne. The settlement would become more formalised over the next century thanks to the development of trading routes with Konigpool, with the management of the settlement and the surrounding areas being passed onto the Walder family sometime in the early BK1200's. The family would oversee the development of the settlement into a growing city, but population would remain low until the mid BK400's, where the town would benefit greatly from an increased desire for leisure options by members of the ruling class. Given the city's location near Mount Mercer and picturesque views along the River Wald, Waldstein quickly grew as a city where Lords could visit for a week away and engage in a range of activities away from the prying eyes of the lower class.

By BK350, Waldstein was one of the largest cities in Katzeburg, spurred on by the tourist barins and the increased lobbying by the ruling Walders towards Kaisers to allocate more funds towards ensuring the city could sustain its growth. The pace of growth would eventually slow down however, as unrest began to grow within the working class in Waldstein as to the clear difference in quality of life between the visiting wealthy and the grunts on the ground. No longer able to afford to live in the city, much of the working class would dissipate to other towns in the region, leaving to the city stagnating for the final two hundred years of pre-revolution Katzeburg.

Following the Revolution and the removal of the Walder family as the owners and managers of the city and surrounds, Waldstein City Council instituted a plan for growth and development of the city by focusing on its history and developing the area for modern society. The city centre was selected to be preserved given it was one of the only spaces in Katzeburg to be relatively untouched by the damaging nature of the Revolution, with strict planning controls in place to ensure developments match the wider aesthetic of the city and keep its unique cultural experience intact. This plan has also seen Waldstein look to become more central to the national narrative once again, by lobbying to bring sporting teams to the city as well as high-profile national events.

Economy

Prior to the Revolution, Waldstein was regarded mostly for its high-end luxury manufacturing capabilities, most notably in the production of furniture, home decorations, and printing. While some of this trade remains, the Revolution and a desire to retain much of the city's aesthetic charm has seen large chunks pushed out to surrounding villages. As a result, modern Waldstein has instead grown to have strong technical and professional services industries, with the city having powerful legal, publishing, and software development trades. Alongside this, the city also has a leading tourist trade, with more than 400,000 visitors per quarter and over 50 hotels and 100 bed and breakfasts of varying sizes. This means the city has a strong hospitality trade, with at least five restaurants holding at least one Blue Star - a Katzeburgian culinary rating which is highly regarded amongst restaurateurs. Major employers include the city's university - the University of Waldstein - Waldstein City Council, and the law firm Darmstadt Oliver Nicholls & Grant, which operates one of its largest offices within the city.

Culture

Prior to the Revolution, Waldstein was regarded as the high-end luxury city for Lords to visit during the warmer months of summer and as a base during winter for those travelling up to Skyberg and Weispitze for those wanting to experience heavy snow on Mount Mercer. As a result, the historical centre of the city has numerous theatres and architectural developments which echo this era, including the Waldstein Forum and the Foxworth Bridge which extends across the River Wald. The city is well-known in Katzeburg for its heavy use of Blorian architecture - a style which was heavily popular between BK280 and BK130 and named after famous Katzeburgian architect George Blorian. The style, built mostly with brick or stone and focusing on proportion and balance with large grand windows often done in a grid-style and uniformity stretching across all elements of the building, means the city has a distinct shape and feel to it when contrasted with other cities in Katzeburg.

Waldstein has a long standing entertainment tradition and focus, with many of the nation's most popular artists playing at the Waldstein Forum in years gone by - with popular singer-songwriter William Gooseman stating in BK15 that 'you have only made it as a musician in Katzeburg once you take the stage at the Waldstein Forum.' The city holds a range of festivals throughout the year, including the Waldstein Tech Forum, the Waldstein International Music Festival, and the Waldstein Racing Festival.

Sport

Waldstein has a diverse sporting culture which has developed in recent years. In football, the city is represented by one team in the Katzeburgian National League - Rapid Waldstein - which joined the league beginning in its fifth season of operation. Waldsein City also participates at the non-league level, and has taken part in the Katzeburg Cup.

The city is arguably most famous for its motorsports background, with the city hosting the only Federation of Automobile Racing for Katzeburg (FARK) approved race-course in the nation with its Waldstein City Circuit. The track hosts the Katzeburgian Qualifier for new entrants to the World Grand Prix Championship and was won by Ron Sommer in its most recent edition. Ron Sommer, a Waldstein local, was one of Katzeburg's first two entrants into the WGPC during its 21st season, and would go on to finish ninth in the drivers championship overall - including a win in the Patriotlandia Grand Prix for Viska Racing.

The city also hosts one of the country's most successful chess clubs in the Waldstein Chess Club, which has participated at various multiversal events, including the 4th Esportivan Sporting Festival in South Newlandia. Rowena Sowards, a member of the club, has also participated at the highest level of the individual circuit - taking part in the first ever World Chess Championship Qualifier in The Kytler Peninsulae. The city is also due to be the base of one of the first eight teams in the Katzeburgian Chess League, with the Waldstein Warriors one of the foundational clubs for the league's first season - due to commence in AK25.

Transport

Waldstein does not sit on any of the major Katzeburgian highways, with access to the city via road coming from the A12 (Lowport to Konigpool via Waldstein), A11 (Waldstein to Wateroth via Hillgard), or the B17 (Waldstein to Barpoint via Tonster). Additionally, roads in the centre of the city are often closed to vehicles during the day to allow for safer pedestrian access to the historic parts of the city, with strict permits required to park on main roads within the city centre. Owing to its location on the north-western side of Mount Mercer and the historical lack of development for infrastructure within Katzeburg, Waldstein is lacking in overall transport links to the rest of the nation. The city is one earmarked for the next phase of expansion for the North Katzeburg Railway, but at present there are no train stations or lines which run through the city.

The majority of the cities' bus services are operated out of the Waldstein Bus Station by national operator KatzeBus. There are regular daily services from Waldstein to numerous towns and cities within north-west Katzeburg, including Lowport, Wateroth, Konigpool, Hillgard, Tonster, and Skyberg. In addition, there are also twice-daily services from Waldstein to the nation's capital Katzestadt and Inverhaven, with the Inverhaven service only coming into operation in the last year thanks to Rapid Waldstein's admission to the KNL. A transport study commissioned by Waldstein City Council in AK18 as part of the council's 20 year plan for the city highlighted that the majority of visitors to the city tend to arrive via road to one of the two Park and Ride facilities on the outskirts of the city and bus into the city centre. KatzeBus also operates special services during peak times of the year and during sporting events from these facilities to provide additional capacity.

Media

Prior to the Katzeburgian Revolution, Waldstein was serviced by the Waldstein Broadcasting Corporation, a television network based in the city's eastern Green Hills district. The network was mostly known for the hit sitcom The Jimmy McHale Show, which starred local comedian Jimmy McHale as a fictionalised version of himself working in Waldstein as a police officer. The programme was the highest rated show in West Katzeburg between BK45 and BK40 - often achieving audiences of more than six million - and has modern notoriety for being the programme which platformed Harmouth band The Clouds to a wide audience for the first time, playing their single ‘Hold That Girl’ during the fourth season premiere where it was revealed McHale had proposed to the wrong one of the Bianca twins. WBC was amalgamated into West Katzeburg Television in AK3 following years of financial difficulties, with the station now forming part of a wider network which is based out of Konigpool.

Waldstein also serves as the North-Western base for national broadcaster KBC, with the radio station on Austin Lane serving as the headquarters for the stations within the region. KBC also broadcasts their regional news programme, North-West Reports, out of the former WBC studio in Green Hills as part of a co-production with WKT. KBC broadcasts KBC Radio Waldstein from Austin Lane, as well as the regional North-West variant of their national Uncovered station, which focuses on new music and independent artists from the region.

There are a number of other radio stations within Waldstein, including community radio station WaldFM, the student radio station University of Waldstein Radio, and commercial music station KaiserFM, which plays hit songs from before the Revolution. Waldstein and the surrounding villages are serviced by one daily newspaper, the Waldstein Enquirer, which has been in operation since BK173.

SYLESTONE NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

Campionato Esportiva 42

Located in the far east of Esportiva, Sylestone is an equatorial nation home to roughly 30 million residents and while the vast, vast majority are humans, Sentients and even a small cluster of elves live on specific areas of the island, which has a size of roughly 700,000 kilometres squared. For the very first time in the nation’s history, though, Mytanar football manager Mojmir Anac’s squad to the 34th Campionato Esportiva and following World Cup Qualifiers - marking the return of international football for Sylestone in over half a decade - was composed of both Sentients as well as humans. In ages past, managers would prefer to not mix the two races out of fear for how that would go and with the Sentient sides almost always receiving the opportunity to play in tournaments while the humans sat in front of their televisions and watches, the vast majority of the Sylestonean population began to become distressed about this obvious favouritism. In fact, aside from the one Campionato Esportiva in the Licentian Isles that saw the human side capitulate to one point from three matches, they never actually received an official go.

But upon the heralded return of Sylestone to football and football to Sylestone, the appointment of Mojmir Anac changed all of that. Although a match between a mixed XI against Quebec and Shingoryeo had occurred the year before as part of a friendly series containing some of the multiverse’s biggest names, last year’s 34th Campionato Esportiva marked the very first time the two races shared the same half of a football field in an official game, or larger tournament. Although a mini-cup between the Sentients, Evermark, Tikariot and Quebec and Shingoryeo in Chamberley that saw the hosts’ only points come in a 2-2 draw with Evermark, results ever since have been the exact opposite of disappointing, and culminated in Anac being nominated as one of five nominees for International Manager of the Year in one Testiculos and even more importantly, saw Sylestone qualify for their first World Cup.

In fact, aside from Sylestone’s first foray into the World Cup three years ago in Græntfjall (RIP) and Kelssek, there hasn’t been a single tournament where Mojmir Anac has not impressed. His first tournament with the Sentients was the 34th Campionato Esportiva four years ago, where the team’s only two losses came against eventual champions Tumbra - once in the group stage and a second time in the knockouts after Sylestone had pulled off a massive upset by knocking off Brenecia following an 8-2 triumph over Macbon. The following World Cup Qualifiers are technically Sylestone’s best ever, recording 44 points in 22 games with a single digit in the goals conceded column… until Huayramarca took over Chamberley by storm in what ended up as an 8-4 shellacking over two playoff legs. However, two years later and backed by a fourth place finish in a home Campionato Esportiva alongside another strong World Cup Qualifying campaign, Anac’s side were not about to make the same mistake against Nyowani Kitara. Instead of mimicking their opponents style of football, they held their own as Riley Strathfield’s second half goal proved the difference in Græntfjall, sending the Sentients through to their first World Cup just three years after their return to the international scene.

After four wildly successful campaigns across the regional and multiversal levels, it was about time Mojmir Anac suffered his first failure. And even in this case, it’s still a tournament that ultimately garnered more praise than criticism, particularly internationally. Although they were out after their opening two fixtures, a pair of 1-0 hard fought 1-0 losses to Ko-oren and Eura were hardly anything to laugh about - although the better team won both encounters, either result could have swung the other way and no one would have batted an eye. It was the matchday three loss to the hosts that really hurt, the Sentients conceding six and even with a team composed primarily of second string players, that kind of result still hurts on the big stage.

But two years later, Anac would correct his wrongs. In front of a packed house in Chamberley for the country’s first ever home World Cup, the Sentients would once again face Ko-oren on matchday one and impressively, turn the result from two years before on its head as they walked away with their first ever three points on the biggest stage of all. Although a 3-0 loss to Mertagne in Pesfield complicated things, a hard fought 1-0 triumph over Baggieland would seal a round of 16 berth for the Sentients and send the entire nation into a frenzy.

It would only get wilder, too, when Abigail Jones cemented herself as a fan favourite with a delicate near post finish in the 28th minute to score the only legal goal of the game as Sylestone’s widely reputed back line got the job done the only way they knew how to. The final eight, with just Tumbra in the way of the semifinals and a genuine shot at the title.

Yeah, they couldn’t do it. The main culprits of Sylestone’s lack of success on the regional stage struck again, defeating the hosts 1-0 in a contest between Esportiva’s two best football teams, and two of the best defensive outfits in the modern world.

Then, the search for Mojmir Anac’s inaugural trophy with the Sentients has continued as the side has fallen in both the Campionato Esportiva final to Fhulghamous Peninsula and then in the International Confederations Cup final to Squornshelan Remnant States - a side Sylestone actually beat earlier in the tournament before falling when it mattered most. And so the wait for a trophy would continue, all the way to World Cup 96 as the chance to lift the holy grail of football rose again.

Needing to participate in a qualifying stage for the first time in four years, there were no signs of struggle as the Sentients smashed and bashed their way through the group, winning their first six games of twelve to put them clear and despite away draws to Zenic, Raspotochje and the Commonwealth of Baker Park in the second half, a thirty point haul from just twelve games saw Anac’s side comfortably qualify for the World Cup itself for the third consecutive time, this one being an all-Anaian affair held in Mertagne and Huayramarca. Drawn into a tricky group with nations with plenty of history in Kelssek and Audioslavia alongside plucky regionmates Josifovo, who were making their debut on the big stage after also blitzing their qualifying group, maintaining that unbeaten run would be incredibly tricky - in fact, there was a very real chance the Sentients would flunk out of the groups.

They made the semifinals, losing to Kelssek - a side from their very group that they drew with earlier in the tournament. And then, in 97, Kelssek would once again eliminate the Sentients, this time in the round of 32 after one of the cruellest draws imaginable that saw four members of the top ten in the world pitted against each other… all to play world number one Valanora in a quarterfinal they’d surely lose.

And then, the next Campionato Esportiva. A third final in four years… and a third loss. So yep, still no trophy. So much success under Mojmir Anac, and nothing to show for it…

He’s a cult hero in Sylestone, and he fully deserves every skerrick of praise he has received. Not even a year into coaching, to have already been nominated as a candidate for the International Manager of the Year is truly spectacular and then to guide Sylestone to a third-placed World Cup finish against the odds was just as inspiring. A former centre back with Olympia Thessia, Anac has already built a reputation for coaching defensive-minded football, with a strong preference for letting opponents dominate and then attacking them on the transition, giving up possession but certainly not giving up goals. Originally, Anac was employed by the Sylestonean Football Association (SFA) to attempt to unify the two races but with the nation’s human footballers beginning to outshine their counterparts from the Sentient city of Kirkham, that’s becoming less and less of a problem each and every day. Anac will push his players to their limits and demand lots of them but at the end of the day, he used to be a player as well, and knows just how hard that can be day in, day out. That being said, the longer he goes without a trophy, the shorter the fan’s patience…

GK: Ryan Macleay (M - 34). Excellent all-round goalkeeper, with the startling reflexes to match.
GK: Jacob Lonergan (M - 22). A very tall up and coming goalkeeper who rose from the lower leagues to prominence in Sylestone and is touted as Macleay’s long term replacement.
GK: Luca Yali (M - 33). Good enough to be the number one for many a national team, with good all round capabilities although can be inconsistent.

LB: Jade Wettenhall (F - 33). Fullback with a nice cross and a whippy corner, also very handy defensively.
LB: Alex Llewellyn (M - 28). A more attacking fullback than Wettenhall, Llewellyn is known for making dangerous runs up the left flank and putting in a dangerous ball. Also very quick, which makes up for a relative lack of defensive ability.
CB: Jake Blackall (M - 30). A big, burly defender with unsurpassed strength. Not too quick, but an excellent tackler. Has a tendency to get into arguments and fights.
CB: Ryder Yelverton (M - 29). Tall, slim and surprisingly strong. Has enough pace to make up for Blackall’s lack of and is very comfortable with the ball at his feet.
CB: Joseph Governor (M - 25). Built more like a midfielder than a centre back, but his tackles are better than most. Extremely composed and has surprising strength for his built.
CB: Natasha Dellit (F - 27). [i]Just a solid centre back. No real weaknesses, and pure mental strength making up for a lack of supreme ability.
CB: Ruby Goldsbrough (F) - 23. A composed, all-round centre back who has no real weak points on the defensive front, but occasionally puts out a stray pass.
RB: Holly Statton (F - 30). Traditional fullback. Can be stand-in skipper. Quite short and agile.
RB: Benjamin Bloomfield (M - 24).[/b] An attacking wingback who started out on the wing, but has really developed his defensive game. Has a really good cross and can even score from time to time.

LM: Jack Ryland (M - 33). Short and fast, although has begun to slow down as he ages. Has quick feet too and a not so bad finish as well.
LM: Brock Wootton (M - 26). Known for his flair, Wootton has turned many a League Number One defence into pieces. Needs to be more focused at times but a useful asset, especially off the bench.
CM: Jack Lawson (M - 33). The midfielder of the generation. Composed, finds crazy passes, has it all. Just the guy you want to run the show. Still got it for another few years at the top of his game.
CM: Charlotte Mahoney (F - 26) (c). Another lower leagues graduate who has risen quickly through the ranks. Hard worker, sometimes goes under the radar but can pop up with something truly incredible just when required, and leads from the front. The new captain after Mornington’s retirement.
CM: Connor Golding (M - 23). Creative young midfielder who has been playing first team football for Cleorough for some years now and has finally earned his callup. Very much like Thomas Hellyer with the way that he plays.
CM: Connor Bellevue (M - 21). A younger, rawer talent, Bellevue is said to have the world at his feet after breaking through at Avondale City. Solid defensively and is reliable with his passing, just lacks a bit of creative threat at times.
CM: Thomas Hellyer (M - 30). More of an attacking midfielder, with more flair and a desire to get forward and launch a shot at goal. Works really well with Lawson.
RM: Jack Moseley (M - 30). Wasn’t even in the picture a few years ago and all of a sudden he’s starting. With quick feet, is he the solution to Sylestone’s problems down the right?
RM: Abigail Illingworth (F - 28). Starts for Avondale City and can play basically across the midfield four and up front. Most likely to serve as Moseley’s backup, however, considering Sylestone’s lack of proper talent up the right wing.

CAM: Brett Sarcav-Jones (M - 28). Widely remarked amongst the best attacking midfielders in the world (well, was). Classic advanced playmaker to set up the striker and is more than capable defensively.
CAM: Evan Chisholm (M - 20). A shock inclusion in this Campionato squad, Chisholm had a breakout season and all of a sudden, is now dubbed as Sarcav-Jones’s understudy. Can he fulfil the weight of expectation with all of his creativity, or will his youth hamper him?

CF: Charlotte Eastwood (F - 32). A well-rounded striker with a mean finish and strong aerial ability.
CF: Matthew Freehill (M - 21): The Sylestonean striker wonderkid. Ridiculously talented, with his composure skyrocketing over the past couple of years. Good enough to properly challenge Eastwood.
CF: Finn Freeling (M - 30). A bit more of a deep-lying striker, can also play in the playmaker role as well as going solo up front.
