Solgavden's Super Cup
The RSFF Patron's Shield is one of the newer competitions in Solgavish football, first being played in 1976. It was originally an exhibition match pitting the champions of the Kongensliga and the winners of the King Halfdan IV Cup against each other. While it started as a charity match, the match has only grown in popularity over the years, now being considered the unofficial start of the Solgavish football season. While teams today mostly play for bragging rights, the charity aspect of the Shield has not been lost, with 750,000 kr being donated to the winning club's charity of choice. As the name suggests, the shield is presented to the winning team by the Patron of the RSFF, the symbolic head of the Royal Solgavish Football Federation. The current RSFF Patron is Prince Albert, Duke of Grannestad, and uncle of Queen Sophia. Since 1993, every edition of the Shield has been played at Harald Kistner Memorial Stadium, in Lysborg.
This season, the RSFF Patron's Shield will be challenged by defending Kongensliga champions Rega Lysborg, and defending King Halfdan IV Cup champions Trondhelle Stags. This will mark
Tobias Zundert's third straight Patron's Shield appearance, being the fourth manager to accomplish such a feat [Nilas Damgaard (1984-86), Holger Mazeroski (1995-97), Peter Strömberg (2006-08)]. The fact that Zundert managed to do this in his first three years as Rega Lysborg's manager is further proof that the club found the right man. This edition also marks the first time this competition would be played between two non-Solgavish managers, truly marking a new international era of the Kongensliga. While Rega Lysborg is looking to add another trophy to their extensive collection, Trondhelle Stags is looking to claim their second major trophy, after winning their first in the form of the KH4 Cup. Aurea Edvinsdottir rallied her team to achieve upset after upset, including beating this Rega Lysborg team 2-0 during the semifinals.
This highly anticipated rematch features two teams that remain largely the same as the previous season. Rega Lysborg is led by current Golden Boot winner
Hannes Ossler, who looks poised to get on the scoresheet in this game. Ossler is paired with Vanorian striker
Jacob Skjelstad, who was a crucial part of the team's offense last season, a key contributor in both goals and assists. The midfield features the duo of
Rohit Mishra and
Jesper Skovgaard, who both look poised to dominate again during this game. In defense,
Stephan Kalb leads the backline, coming off his breakout performance with the National Team. And of course, in goal lies captain
Gunny Kristoffersan, one of the best to ever wear the gloves in Kongensliga history. Although he is aging, this goalkeeper is still just as deadly as ever. Meanwhile, Trondhelle fields a lineup full of young talent, as evident by their fast paced style of play. The team is led in attack by striker
Lambert Brampton, who ended his debut season with the team as its leader in goals. Directly behind him lies the pair of young midfielders that have gotten a lot of attention due to their chemistry,
Kay Dahlberg and
Torvald Losnedahl. And in goal for the Stags is another breakout star, the Chromatik
Kim Gyu-Ri, who was voted as the fourth best goalkeeper during her first season, as well as the MVP during Trondhelle's Cup run.
Rega Lysborg 1 – 2 Trondhelle Stags This match lived up to the hype, as both high powered offenses clashed with each other head on, and both goalkeepers played at an elite level, making save after save. The match started off with a bang, as Trondhelle striker Lambert Brampton went on a breakaway in the first few minutes, and look to score unopposed. Yet just before Brampton's shot went in the net, Gunny Kristoffersan made one of his signature outstretched diving saves to the roar of the crowd. This sequence repeated over and over again for both teams, with Trondhelle goalkeeper Kim Gyu-Ri making spectacular saves of her own. Despite the offensive firepower displayed, the first goal would come from a defender, as Stephan Kalb headed in a corner to give Rega the lead going into the half. The second half started going in Rega's favor, as the difference in experience between the two teams became obvious. With their 1-0 deficit seeming insurmountable, Trondhelle slowly ramped up the pressure against Lysborg's formidable backline. In the 78' minute, they broke through, with Brampton finally getting on the scoresheet as Kristoffersan couldn't quite reach his chip shot. With the game tied, Rega dug in even more, preparing to take the game to extra time. After 90 minutes, the referee signaled for 4 added minutes, giving both teams a little time to claim the game winner. Yet with time winding down, it looked like extra time would be inevitable...until Kay Dahlberg let off a risky shot that looked to surely go over the net. At the last second, the ball hooked back down, stunning the crowd, and more importantly, leaving Kristoffersan flat-footed, with the ball going into the net unopposed. The stadium erupted into cheers, and as Hannes Ossler let off a desperation shot from close to midfield that Kim easily caught, the referee blew the whistle, ending the match as a Trondhelle victory.
This time, longtime captain Konsta Ljungborg lifted the shield high above his head to a whirlwind of yellow and black confetti, in what surely would be a positive note to his last season with the club. After the festivities, RKT interviewed a few of the participants in the game...
Kay Dahlberg, the young star that scored Trondhelle's game winning goal, "This team is something special, if we work hard and believe in ourselves, we can accomplish anything, including winning the Kongensliga title!"
Aurea Edvinsdottir, the Tikariotian manager credited with turning this Trondhelle squad into a force to be reckoned with, "The players performed admirably today, especially Kim [Gyu-Ri], who looked to be unstoppable in net. We need to carry this momentum into the season, and give the rest of the league hell!"
Gunny Kristoffersan, Rega Lysborg's longtime goalkeeper and captain, "I'm immensely proud of how the boys played today, and I wouldn't want to be out on the pitch with anyone else"..."We can't win them all, but this is a new season, and we'll bounce back in no time."
