Scorinators (OOC Discussion)

Postby The Babbage Islands » Tue Jun 08, 2010 7:53 pm

Might as well get a discussion topic going. I just posted Miscellanator's first public release, 1.08, at my site. That's the first of three scorinator releases I know of this month, with NSFS 3 coming from Vephrall and xkoranate 0.3 coming from Commerce Heights in a matter of days.

Questions and comments welcome.

You know, the fact that your name is Glenn somehow isn't that surprising to me. I don't know why, but it isn't. :p

Just a gentle reminder to everyone to discuss scorinators, not whether you're called Glenn or not. Don't want to make it seem as if I'm cracking down on NS Sport banter, but there's been some minor grumbling from restless natives.

TBI, hope you don't mind, but I'm going to make a minor change to your thread title to clarify that you're looking for OOC discussion. That's clear in your OP, but not so much in the title.

I'm working on a relatively simple to use excel scorinator similar to the ones used for the WCs I hosted, but ever so slightly better. And hopefully with a better formula. Also possibly something simple for tennis, too, although I'll be interested to know if TBI's scorinator could do that.

I haven't done tennis yet. My emphasis so far has been on team sports. But tennis wouldn't be hard to add. Football is already being developed, not that the world needs another football scorinator. :) I'm also looking for a good data set for the highest levels of Gaelic football.

I'd be interested to find out how to work the Excel formulae you're plotting.

The past few smaller tournaments I've hosted have all been with an Excel spreadsheet. Perhaps I can pick your brain to enhance my abilities with them?

TBI: Would you like to with me on some sort of excel project using an input file? One that would be adjustable for the amount of teams would have tables included and would have a resume file?.

I'll post it here to see if anyone else is getting this issue.

TBI, I downloaded the Excel version FYI.
However, on the Matchlist sheet every blue column (A,B) and D column (score results) are not pulling anything into and are showing the #REF error.

Yes, I've gone through the and changed B1-B3 but still got the same #REF error.

Am I the only one with this issue?

A #REF error suggests a problem when I exported to Excel. (The native format is .ods.) I'll check it when I am home. Do the sport sheets turn up the right stuff? That could give me a clue.

EDIT: I downloaded the Excel version to a work machine running Excel 2003 as part of MS Office Professional. It has the #REF problem on every sport sheet as well as the MatchList sheet. I'll compare versions at home. Possibly it's the version of Excel in use, possibly it's a difference in the handling of indirect references, possibly something gets mangled in export. The orange cells on the sport sheets--the ones that do not use INDIRECT to reference the schedule sheet--work fine.

I never had a problem with the Golfinator export, but Golfinator doesn't use INDIRECT across multiple sheets. Unfortunately, since I refuse to let MS Office on my Mac I can't test an Excel export using Excel at home. Back to work for me for now, thanks for the information.

TBI, I'm not a very technical person with this stuff, and I'm rather poor at operating scorinators (I got somewhat lost when I attempted to use NSFS Gridball Mod) so I have a question/request:

Would it be possible to modify Miscellanator to, say, tourney (otherwise known as jousting), or other obscure sports?

Beyond that, I have a question which has not yet been addressed (to my knowledge) in the Help File provided, in that is there any list on the "Set-Up" spreadsheet that should not under any circumstances be edited? For instance, the first group on the Setup spreadsheet comes with entries (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie...), that I am unsure as to whether or not they should be edited for testing reasons while I feel this out.

Miscellanator lives for obscure sports. :)

Although fixing the Excel export issue is top of my list right now, in principle Miscellanator should work comfortably with any environment where head-to-head matches between two teams or individuals are the norm. Got a database you want me to look at?

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by database? Could you give me an example, so I can figure out if there is one I can provide?

The best I know of the sport, such as it is, is what I see at the Rennaisance Festival every year. The main reason for interest is that it is, technically, my state's official sport (Maryland FTW!) and I'm sort of interested in the RP possibilities of having a distinctly medieval sport RP'ed in modern times. But so understand that I have only observation-based knowledge, ATM, and so this may or may not be completely accurate. I'll double-check.

Now as for teams...I believe there are two knights or entries per team. There are point values assigned to the manner of the two entries actually jousting at any given time (a match, I'd assume would be the best term for it, or a try) and point values are assigned for the following, I believe in ascending order: a broken lance, a shattered lance, and an unhorsed opponent (which I think is the best possible outcome). I believe each member of each team gets four tries (that is how many lances they have per (round?) in my experience.

I'm not entirely sure about the foot-tourney portion, or the portion where wooden clubs are used on horseback. I'll need to brush up on those.

Hope this helps. Also, I'm not sure if you saw it, but there's another question I put in my older post. I'll restate it here for ease:

"Beyond that, I have a question which has not yet been addressed (to my knowledge) in the Help File provided, in that is there any list on the "Set-Up" spreadsheet that should not, under any circumstances be edited? For instance, the first group on the Setup spreadsheet comes with entries (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie...), that I am unsure as to whether or not they should be edited for testing reasons while I feel this out."

Kudos, btw: at least from my perspective, Miscellenator seems infinitely more user-friendly than NSFS.

Here is the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jousting

Oops. I was incorrect. No point value is assigned for unhorsing an opponent in modern jousting. The point system is entirely based on breaking the lance on the opponent's shield.

Although, if this were to be finding a large following in The Fanboyists, the unhorsing portion might well be reincorporated, given general bloodthirstiness. ;)

The following event is the main basis for what I know of this:

In Port Republic, Maryland the annual Calvert County Jousting Tournament is held every August on the grounds of historic Christ Episcopal Church. In 2005, the tournament was featured in an edition of ESPN's SportsCenter.

I build my algorithms based on good, available data for recent competitions at the highest level. This is obviously a guess in some instances. For Quidditch I had to reread a bunch of Harry Potter until I found a compilation and analysis on the web. For Babbage rules I had to guess at the probability of scoring events within a structured framework. Jousting will definitely be a guessing game. :)

You can remove or edit any of the data on the Setup sheet safely. I put in protections on the other sheets so an accidental click or three doesn't destroy things.

Kudos, btw: at least from my perspective, Miscellenator seems infinitely more user-friendly than NSFS.

Thanks. I just wish it also did certain things NSFS does. :)

Yeah, I must be honest, user-friendliness isn't exactly NSFS2's strong suit. ;)

That was, indeed, my primary concern when developing NSFS3, and so far the beta testers have indicated that it's a vast improvement in that regard.

As TBI said in the opening post, the new NSFS will be appearing later this month; as of this writing the release is likely to occur on June 20.
