Postby Graintfjall » Tue Jan 16, 2024 12:29 pm

Please only post here if you are on the list of accepted entries. OOC comments should go in the OOC thread.

If you are on the list... welcome to the White Winter Queendom of Græntfjall for the 45th Copa Rushmori!

Please consider posting a roster even if you do not think you will be roleplaying the tournament, as a roster is important in helping others roleplay. Teams that do not post a roster will not receive their CR ranking points. When posting a roster, please include a permissions box such as this:

Code: Select all
If my opponents RPs first they may:
Choose my scorers: Y/N
Give out yellow/red cards to my players: Y/N
Injure my players: Y/N
Godmode scoring events: Y/N
Godmode other events: Y/N

Please ensure your style modifier (-5 to +5) is clearly visible when you post your roster, preferably in or around the permissions box.

The format will be a single round robin group stage of 6×6, with the top 2 in each group plus the 4 best 3rd placed finishers reaching the playoffs. All games will be played in Græntfjall.

Welcome To The White Winter Queendom of Græntfjall!

Image

Græntfjall has hosted a number of tournaments, but it has not hosted a Copa Rushmori since CR36, which it co-hosted with Tikariot 18 years ago [in Græntfjaller time]. Since then Græntfjall has continued a strong economic run, while technological development continues apace. Immigration means Græntfjall is less conservative, white, and Catholic than it was 18 years ago (though the conservative white Catholics that remain are much more vocal in their displeasure). Attitudes to gay and lesbian people are more progressive, too (though actually less so in some of the more heavily immigrant-populated areas). Public health has improved thanks to campaigns against smoking and alcoholism, but pollution remains a problem despite the first ever environmentalist party featuring in minority coalition in government. Prime Minister Kaija Michaelsdóttir has stood down after becoming the first Prime Minister to give birth in office, and the contest to replace her as leader of the Progressive Liberals will determine the next Prime Minister. Græntfjall continues to hold against CRC membership and its attempts at organizing a regional climate conference ended in a shower of goose shit (literally) but it's definitely a country that is more welcoming to outsiders than it was 18 years ago.

On each MD, the first listed game will be at the first listed stadium, the second listed game at the second, and the third at the third.

Group 1 (Northwest)
Florus Stadion [non-commercial name: Altendalur Stadion]
Altendalur is northwest port city and cultural hub of the West, a region that generally feels under the political thrall of the dominant East. It was built on whaling: the stadium is literally built on whaling, as a massive whale spine ornaments the main entrance gate. Home of the Chessmen, seats are in alternate black and white check patterns.

Fjistjing Stadion
Home to Hintersfjörður, who are routinely one of the strongest sub-GPL teams and yet seem to constantly miss out on promotion to the big time. The Fjistjing Stadion did not feature during the previous Copa Rushmori rotation, but is well suited to winter conditions, with a fully retractable roof. Hintersfjörður lies in the suburbs of Altendalur and has a generally similar cultural disposition, with entrenched hostility to Eastern elites and little interest in outsiders.

Fjlarkfjall Arena
Þingsnitz play their home games at Fjlarkfjall. Þingsnitz is a small coastal city a few miles east of Altendalur, on the other side of the other side of the Bay of Blood. The two enjoy a healthy rivalry in matters football and otherwise. The Fjlarkfjall Arena also did not feature in the last CR; despite its small size and lack of roof, it’s otherwise well appointed for a Division 1 side’s home arena, clearly reflecting its owners’ desires to win promotion. Culturally, the fishing port is much more amenable to visitors than their cross-bay neighbors.

Group 2 (Háttmark)

Olympik Stadion Indriði Kilíansson, Lehberg
Lehberg is a mainly residential area of North Háttmark, with much less football pedigree than the more famous northern suburbs Gunzlach and Steinaux, but a surprisingly nice stadium for its perennially disappointing football team. The stadium (ambitiously, if not misleadingly, named given Græntfjall has never hosted the Olympics) is large and was built in the communist era so its brutalist design lacks certain features such as concession stands, high tech replay screens, and fire exits.

TeknoSprog Dome, Mokofen
Mokofen is a satellite city of Háttmark to the South, home of the ping-pong Mokofen club that has been in and out of the GPL. The TeknoSprog Dome is notable for being an indoor arena with a roof and climate controls that ensure it offers year round sports regardless of the weather. By international standards it's on the lower end of seating capacity, but offers nice amenities and thanks to its location next to an Intramark high-speed train link very easily accessible for those staying in the capital.

Grand National Arena, Gunzlach
The main national stadium, the 50,000 seater used to be the country's only international-level sports facility. It is the most famous stadium in the country and home of multiple time champions Gunzlach, "the Gunners". The name reflects their origins in the old military arsenal stationed there. On the north side of Háttmark, the GNA is built in what remains a fairly conservative, working-class district, with rumblings of disquiet over recent immigrant arrivals and rapid house price rises in the wake of gentrification.

Group 3 (Háttmark)

Grander International Arena, Steinaux
The 50,001 seater is home of Steinaux, "the Sausages". Their name is rooted in the working class meat processing and dock warehouse district, which has undergone substantial renovation. Unlike rivals Gunzlach across the river, Steinaux is now located in an upmarket neighborhood with tech and pharma jobs booming. The club has historically been one of the strongest in the GPL, though the fact the league hasn't been scorinated in a while has been seen as a hit to their title chances.

GT Estadio Fútbol De Musarañas De Oro [non-commercial name: Estadio Fútbol De Musarañas De Oro], Molding
The home of GT Molding, "the Gold Shrews", and Korsbach's south Háttmark rivals. Built by Tequiloan multinational Grupo Taxhavn and unpronouncable to the locals, the stadium is by far the biggest in the country (which a capacity of close to 70,000). Lush, well appointed – is “chintzy” pushing it too far?

Sólneyri Municipal Ground, Ostmark
Tiny and ill-appointed compared to the group's two other grounds, but then a full stadium roster for 18 games means they aren't all gonna be winners. Ostmark was once the eastern boundary of Háttmark, though city sprawl now means it should really be rechristned Justslightlyostofcentermark. The fiercely working class ground sits nestled among new skyscrapers and glittering glass facades in the revamped financial district, the "Square Octagon".

Group 4 (South)

Frei Stadion, Búðarberg
Located in the southwest city of Búðarberg, the capital of Fliserboding, a broad, flat agricultural plain that is geographically and at times culturally at odds with the rest of Græntfjall. Perceived as the home of a rump pro-communist minority by the rest of the country. The local club, Fliserboding, is chiefly notable for their tradition of throwing cabbages on the field before each game. The stadium, while pretty, smells terrible as a result.

OptiFone Arena [non-commercial name: Folte Arena]
Folte is a market town that lies just south of Aigsvinger, the city that sits at the fork of the Odinsfluss River. Much like the city, Folte is a town that embodies traditions of both the East and West: the market bringing fresh produce from the West, the commuter hub going to middle class jobs in the East. The popular local team, the Striders, are one of the most internationally mixed. A huge Catholic church dominates the skyline and on clear days service bells can be heard during matches.

Laxenvöllur, Kyrkdorf
Mühlrich is the club that's most representative of the conservative alpine traditions of the country. Based in the suburbs of Kyrkdorf, the "last city before the mountains", it's an old, traditional club, and the slightly fusty stadium reflects that. Lots of (now fairly dusty, as the Turtles have seen better days) trophies in the cabinet, hard seats, and smoking still permitted in certain areas. Interestingly, the stadium itself isn't that old as it has burned down four times. Smoking remains stubbornly permitted. The Turtle Ultras are the most radical Ultras in the country. Racist chanting has mostly been stamped out, but it's not a place to go for provoking intellectual discourse.

Group 5 (Northeast)

VG Arena [non-commercial name: Maigburg Arena]
One of the bigger arenas, in fact the largest outside the capital. The Maigburg club is based in the suburbs of Waltenberg, the biggest university city, and reflects its academic traditions, middle-class professions, and fierce anti-communism. The "Catbear" ultras are ferociously loyal (and occasionally ferociously xenophobic). The stadium is big but old and run-down. A multi-purpose arena, it hosts many sports including athletics, notably the final lap of the Waltenberg Marathon.

Poets Park Stadium, Waltenberg
Also found in Waltenberg, the PPS is cut from a very different cloth than the VG Arena. A small, intimate arena attached to the College of Medicine, one of the most prestigious colleges of UW, and overlooking the river, it has the ambience of football from a different era, of amateur scholars shrugging off their academic robes for a quick kickaround, in comparison to the garish professionalism of the VG Arena.

TQG Langvöllur Arena [non-commercial name: Langvöllur Arena], Hofvinger
The Langvöllur Arena (the second Arena is redundant as völlur means Arena in Græntfjaller, but the name persists for some reason) is in the exclave of Hofvinger, which lies the other side of the Komodo Channel to mainland Græntfjall. As such, the "Northern Wolves" of Hofvinger have always considered themselves a bit different (i.e. superior) to the soft southerners. It is absolutely freezing even in summer owing to the wind patterns. Teams will travel via ferry from Háttmark, assuming the sea isn't ice-locked.

Group 6 (Southeast)

New Skoðarhüb [non-commercial name: Hartburg New Park]
Located in Hartburg, the gateway to Lake Viljan. Bypassing the Alps, which dominate the southern half of the country, requires going through the Estdal Gate, once a turnpike, now one of the busiest commercial bridges in the country, connecting the industrial heartlands with the Rushmori interior. That name lives on in the Ducks, the team whose sponsors Skoðar Optik have invested heavily in foreign managers, players, and now a new stadium. Not state of the art by international standards, but some of the lifts actually work and the coffee machine does cappucinos! Witchcraft!!

PR-1070 Platz, Oost-Hartburg
Oost-Hartburg have always struggled to stay up in the GPL, so the locals are thirsting for some good football action. It's one of the smaller stadiums to be hosting games, but has good amenities thanks to its connections with prosperous local businesses.

Nökkvi Þjóðbjörnsson Stadium, Goesberg
Goesberg is a grim little city southwest of Hartburg: though hundreds of years ago it was a splendid trade city on the Furry Road (a name for the trading link to Græntfjall, not a sexual euphemism) it has seen better days as major transit routes have bypassed it, reducing its economic impact. It bore the brunt of the initial invasion during the War of Restoration, which means it has many historic sites but most of them are just piles of rubble noting that an interesting building used to be here. Its stadium is a cheap, dingy little affair too.

The Dandelions continue sporting their new 4-3-3 formation with a relatively high defensive line combined with high pressing by the forwards (known as Stoic Press). We say ‘new’, but of course it’s not new anymore, because Deltic coach Enda Clentin is a household name in The Union these days. Clentin brought the team to their first ever World Cup in the 94th cycle where they came away with one win and three points, and he mustered a respectable campaign in the 44th Copa Rushmori that ended with the traditional Ro16 loss to Eura. Hopes were high as they entered the qualifications for the 95th World Cup, but the delivery was so-n-so as The Dandelions managed to earn a total of 0 points in the first three games. It was uphill from there and in all honesty, few were surprised when they eventually failed to qualify. They fared better in the subsequent 87th Cup of Harmony and managed to battle themselves all the way to the quarterfinals (where they annoyingly lost to Xanneria). Now they’re back for a new Copa. With many of the old heroes retired, new prospects are eager to uphold proud Union Copa traditions of just surviving the group stage and then lose, probably to Eura.

The last World Cup saw the Maçaricas build on the momentum from their win in Copa Rushmori 44, establishing that World Cup 94, when they crashed out of qualifying, was the fluke, rather than 93 where they qualified for the first time. Failing to advance out of a tough group that included the ultimate champion is hardly a black mark against a squad that was nearly perfect in qualifying, dropping its first points in the thrilling final against Huayramarca. AJ Zanetti remains at the helm of the team for as long as he can keep this train rolling; at this point, the next relevant question is when will his legacy overtake that of his predecessor, the late venerable Paulinho.

Zanetti played every member of his 23 in the World Cup, and it appears the majority of that squad is in his plans for the future as well. Ambrosio Gomez is not yet thirty and has given Zanetti no reason to doubt his fitness to be the top keeper, and either Leitao or Sapeteiro is prepared to back him up if he has an off day. M'bah-Pinho, brother of Quebec international Oberon, is by far the team's best centerback, though his decisionmaking is in question after a blowup against Huayramarca in qualifying that saw him benched for the first match of qualifying. Esportiva-based Adalberto Furtado figures to start opposite Tobias, though young Duarte Araujo stepped up immensely in M'bah-Pinho's absence and contributed to the team's only points in the WC finals.

At fullback, Amilcar Branco will wear the captain's armband full-time in Graintfjall, likely a sign that Cleto Silveira is entering the twilight of his career. Branco remains spry as ever, bombing down the field and getting involved in the attack as often as he can, in contrast to the more conservative play of Heitor "Bandicoot" Soares. Marcelinho Costa is as serviceable a backup as ever and will likely see starter minutes.

The midfield has finally settled after years of turbulence with the emergence of Rolando Florencio as a reliable CAM alongside the more defensive-oriented talents of Emmanuel Bastos and Miguel Gontijo. The spate of players playing out of position also appears to be over; Vasco Cardoso is on the roster as a forward, and Miguel Gontijo is no longer the team's third-choice centerback. Telmo Andrade and Salvador d'Cruz proved their value in rotational roles in World Cup qualifying.

The striker rotation is more in flux than it has been in a long time, although if Cleto Silveira is taking a reduced role, that may answer some questions. Pio Mendonca remains the best player to come out of Cabo Azure, his off-field antics notwithstanding, and he will be flanked more often than not by Os Dos Vascos. Of greater interest is the emergence of Anselmo Santos, the Audioslavia-based journeyman who showed up in several clutch situations in qualifying, as an option.

The Sentinels have yet to go far in the Copa Rushmori, but are happy to continue to send teams - to build exposure, build experience, and enjoy the world with color. Kenzi Issington is the lynchpin on defense, though she usually has to do all of the work, with a very unexperienced back line; Jan Illan is in at Right Back, while Taria Moss is more of a wingback that's moonlighting at left back. The strength of this team is the tandem of Baia Kane, Malda Jusovin, and Suvin Ansetta. The three players from Katahari, the best offensive team in the Noirean league, are what makes the team tick; Huron Card is an all around player, Daar Fhoven the defensive midfielder, and Mynt Toscek a speed demon.

They'll need to rely on the fact that they're an unknown to shock their foes. Otherwise, they don't really have a chance.

THE UNITED REPUBLICS OF YUEZHOU
COPA RUSHMORI 45 ROSTER

月州联合共和国 - 国际足球队
Image
Badge and kits designed by Txakhaxi's Tahuatxi Storefront.

The future is bright, and weirdly Nepharan, for the Dragons. While the YFA's decision to replace popular manager with Chen Huikang with Elaine Ashdown was panned at the time, the Nepharan legend took Yuezhou to the World Cup knockout rounds in her first cycle before managing the team to a perfect qualifying record in her second. Combined with some surprise interest from an Igrene Cantor-less Nephara, it was enough for the YFA to finally commit to a manager longterm, extending Ashdown for four more years and giving her an unprecedented level of control over national team operations. The team is increasingly built around dual nationals, with eight (including three Nephars) on the roster. Most notably, Leona Tsang joins after a single cap with the Cormorants, and will immediately become the team's striker of the future. On paper, everything is lining up for the Dragons to make a long-overdue run at the Copa Rushmori. On paper.

COACHING STAFF

Manager: Elaine ASHDOWN, 61 (NPH)
As a player, Elaine Ashdown was the midfielder of her generation, and one of the finest in Nephara's long lineage of star CMs. As a manager, results had been more mixed before her hiring by Yuezhou, but things have really worked out here after she at least held her own at Brinemouth and Gaelic Club. She favors a more patient style than Chen Huikang's, emphasizing structure and workrate in midfield. However, far from a traditional defensive disciplinarian, she also likes giving talented, creative wing players room to operate, often using individual creativity to cover for her tactical setups. While soft-spoken, she knows what it takes to win, and will do whatever it takes to get her players to learn the same.

Assistant Manager: Corinne MERSIADES, 52 (NPH)
Last seen with North Laithland, Mersiades has had a number of stints managing Nepharan clubs. But despite her clear tactical prowess, she's never quite been able to put it all together in her club career. Still, her skillset makes her well-suited to inform Ashdown's strategy and help Yuezhou perform better against stronger teams - something they've historically struggled with. Recently signed a big-money extension to stay with the national team, which Ashdown (whose contract expires after the Copa Rushmori) was reportedly instrumental in negotiating.

Assistant Manager: CHEN Haixuan, 48
Liang Bo has surprisingly resigned as assistant manager after being losing the U21 job to Kang Guilin's nephew. Taking his place is the younger Chen, who has managed Beian Rovers from lower midtable to the heady heights of...also lower midtable. He's at least a likeable guy who should help communicate Ashdown's vision and keep things friendly in the dressing room.

Goalkeeping Coach: Ursula GAVARIS, 40 (NPH)
Yue National Team Goalkeeping Coaches have been very in-demand lately, with Lu Qiang headed to the Red League and Ming Xilang off to Quebec. Ashdown will hope that the Zenith veteran who last kept goal for Alliance Barossia won't follow in their footsteps too quickly.

GOALKEEPERS

#01 - GK - ZHAO Deliang (赵德亮) - 30 - Atletik Thessia (MYT)
Zhao has developed from one of the world’s great goalkeeping prospects (he became the first goalkeeper to win the Yue Golden Ball as a teenager) into one of the world’s best goalkeepers with Atletik. A cool, confident, and physically imposing general on the pitch, albeit a bit traditionalist in playstyle.

#12 - GK - Jasmine HSU (f) - 24 - Newrook City (NPH)
A confident young goalkeeper whose strong presence in the box allows her to play bigger than her relatively short stature for a keeper. Despite her relatively young age, she's both comfortable distributing and a vocal defensive leader, and has been quietly solid in the First Division. Snapped up by the YFA before she could break out in Nephara.

#79 - GK - Timofei TRISCHUK-HUANG - 21 - Beiyun Stars
The son of former South Newlandian NT captain Mikhail Trischuk, Trischuk-Huang is a lanky, athletic shot-stopper with flashes of distribution talent. It's probably a cycle too early for him to make any impact, but calling him up now ensures the Newlandians won't get him for the Campionato.

CENTER-BACKS

#06 - LCB - HU Jiewen (胡介问) - 33 - Corinthians No Longer (NPH)
Known for his composure, leadership, and surefootedness, Hu is a strong, quick center-back with a high ceiling - although some inconsistency has kept him from fully reaching it. Still, his well-roundedness and ability to drive forward with the ball make him an excellent fit for the Dragons' system, even if he might find Yuan Mingrong's shoes a bit too big to fill.

#15 - RCB - DENG Daiyu (邓黛玉) (f) - 29 - Newark Argyle (TMB)
A physical, aggressive defender who's also weirdly good at line-breaking passes. Captained Jiangdong Tycoons before their relegation, earning a transfer to a much higher-quality league in the process.

#26 - RCB - Garrett SHANGYUAN - 28 - Chatswood (NPH)
Quick and physically imposing, the dual national Shangyuan is known for his flashy blocks and his lumbering runs upfield, as well as his almost magnetic attraction to being booked.

#05 - CB - Esekíel Zeminsson YAO - 22 - Ararat Severyan (MYT)
While he's not quite a BFG, Esekíel Yao is still quite physically imposing, and compensates for average speed with strong defensive instincts, good short-range passing, and the ability to perform under pressure. Does have a prospenity to foul in dangerous areas and overrate his own passing instincts, but one can hope that'll go away in time. Idolized Yuan Mingrong growing up, and was given Yuan's #5 after playing by his side for two seasons at Ararat.

FULLBACKS

#14 - LB/LWB - HUANG Han (黃翰) - 27 - Aries Chariots (NPH)
An energetic, pacy wingback who thrived as a crosser in Olympic Nangang's three-at-the-back system, before excelling both as a winger and as a fullback in the proving grounds of Kelssek, where he earned consideration for Young Player of the Year with Torbay Thunder. Now in the Zenith and reinstated as a national team starter, the only remaining questions around his game are whether or not he actually wants to be a defender.

#25 - RB - DONG Xiaowang (董小王) - 32 - Megabrantid (SRS)
A pacy, strong fullback well-suited to the modern game. Could be creatively deployed as a winger in a pinch, and with Huang will provide a lot of the width in this setup.

#24 - LB - LU Lanying (f) - 32 - Capitol City FC (BNJ)
A quick, athletic left-back, Lu is strong when driving forwards and tracking back but could work on her crossing. In Ashdown's setup, she'll be pushed up more than she is at the club level, but will still be relied upon to shore up the flanks.

#13 - RB/RWB - Songwei MILOSEVIC - 21 - Eikborg Club (SEM)
Born to Mytanar steelworker parents in Beian, Milosevic is industrious off the field but quickly made waves among Yue scouting circles with a high-flying, attack-minded take on the rightback position. While still raw, his incredible endurance and strong ball skills could make him a great modern fullback.

#13 - LB/LCB - BAO Yuwei - 29 - Olympic Nangang
A diligent, composed fullback who was primarily a center-back until his conversion unlocked Olympic Nangang's defense en route to a surprise YS!L title. Stocky but deceptively quick for someone with his strength, but he's better without the ball than with it.

HOLDING MIDFIELDERS

#18 - CM - PAN Xilei (f) (潘熙蕾) - 33 - La + Querida (FFD)
Pan Xilei’s ascendance from international hostage to best defensive midfielder in the world (as recognized by the Tornados) has been as sudden as it was unexpected. Early in her career, a paperwork mixup torpedoed her NT chances and left her an international hostage in the SFPL’s basement. But after winning the SFPL on loan and captaining her newly lithified club to their highest-ever finish, she’s become a key part of the national team. On the pitch, she's an intelligent player whose greatest strengths are her workrate and physicality - and a decade of Farfadillis-related trauma has made her very good under pressure.

#29 - CDM/CM - ZHAXI Jianzan (f) (扎喜坚赞) - 26 - Chardonnay Rangers (NPH)
A hard-nosed defensive midfielder who will do anything on the field to win - and who has the athletic ability and field vision, if not a full suite of on-ball tools, to make it happen. Not related to Zhaxi Nanlei.

#17 - CM - GUO Hong - 33 - 1896 Ebor (MYT)
A quick, diminutive water-carrier who excels at breaking up attacks and has grown into a key role for 1896 Ebor. Was a huge part of the Dragons’ five consecutive shutouts in the qualifiers, even briefly earning himself a few starts in the World Cup proper before Zhaxi Jianzan reasserted herself.

#39 - CDM - CAI Renshu - 35 - Binclestead Wood (FVA)
The linchpin of Olympic Nangang's surprise title-winning side before acquitting himself well in Flavovespia, Cai does all the little stuff right and has seemingly endless energy that he uses to effectively stymie opposing creative players.

#27 - CM - ZHENG Haidong - 31 - FC Inter Nantwich (TMB)
A hard-working collector of loose balls and deep-lying playmaker. Somewhat of a left-field choice for Elaine Ashdown, who is confident that despite Zheng's rotational role at club level that he can spell Pan Xilei at the international level.

ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS

#34 - LW/ST - LIN Qingling (f) (林清龄) - 29 - Sporting Noordende (CNR)
After a few years winning over Cap Nord, Lin Qingling finally got a chance to start last World Cup with Luo Nanwei hurt, and seriously rose to the occasion. A versatile attacker most skilled at setting up others, Lin isn’t the most athletic but has a lot of tricks in her bag to compensate.

#08 - CM/CAM - Kara Mingsdottír ZHANG (f) (张白兰) - 26 - Liria Prizren (MYT)
The YFA spent a lot of time and effort convincing Karolíná Mingsdottír to declare for Yuezhou's national team instead of Græntfjall's, but it's become apparent that the young midfielder was worth the trouble. A well-rounded midfield prospect whose speed and technique makes her devastating on the counterattack, and who has a propensity for scoring wondergoals. Has seriously come into her own at Liria, becoming one of Rushmore's most promising talents at attacking midfield. Became the team’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup with a three-goal eruption last cycle.

#11 - RAM/RW - LUO Nanwei (罗南伟) - 30 - La + Querida (FFD)
An extraordinarily athletic player who worked his way onto Guodui's senior team as a teenager; despite some injuries during his youth career, his pace and dynamic creativity make him a terror with the ball, although he can be erratic and inconsistent. Has taken somewhat of a diva turn as of late, playing more selfishly on the pitch while forcing a big-money transfer from Inter Nantwich to lithostate-owned La + Querida. Finally returns after missing the World Cup to injury - but does he have enough athleticism post-injury to continue to own this wing?

#07 - RAM/LAM - JIANG Jieren - 34 - Osarese Marcadia (AUD)
An incredibly quick winger who finally gets to take his favored position at right-wing with Luo Nanwei out. Jiang is absolutely electric when everything is working, with a combination of scoring and playmaking on the counterattack that really make an impact. He still tends to play a little more ambitiously than his aging legs would prefer, but remains one of the more dangerous players on this squad even off the bench in what is likely his final international tournament.

#80 - CM - Brynjólfur Zhenyasson ZHANG - 24 - Crossroads (CMT)
Born and raised in Græntfjall, but the son of Yuezhou NT midfielder Zhang Zhenya, it was anyone's guess who Zhang was going to declare for. Just like Kara Mingsdottír Zhang (no relation), though, he opted for the side with a paucity of talented young midfielders. After returning to Yuezhou at his father's urging and surprising everyone by becoming the linchpin of Royals' attack at a young age, he headed to the Red League to further prove himself. A dynamic 8/10 hybrid who moves quickly with and without the ball, and who offers relentless energy on the defensive end.

#22 - RW - FU Xiaoxi - 29 - Brisara FC (CMT)
A smooth and skilled winger, if perhaps overly deferential on the attack.

STRIKERS

#21 - ST - Leona TSANG (f) (曾巧珠) - 21 - AFC Treason (NPH)
GS+'s best young player in the world is now a Dragon, accepting Elaine Ashdown's callup in controversial fashion two caps short of being tied to the Cormorants. Her speed, dynamic off-ball runs, and ability to score from anywhere make her difficult to pin down, especially with Kara Mingsdottír Zhang feeding her a steady diet of through-balls for the foreseeable future.

#09 - ST - LIANG Wei - 31 - Chardonnay Rangers (NPH)
A tall, imposing target man who has settled in well at the Zenith level after scoring a goal a game in the First Division. Can be a little immature at times, and has underwhelmed before when given the opportunity to start for Ashdown’s Yuezhou, but will provide a good chance of pace off the bench.

#30 - SS/CAM - LUO Chuan (f) - 33 - Spenson Suburbia (ZWZ)
An agile, technically adept attacking midfielder at her best when distributing to others, but who tends to get bullied off the ball. Will play as a pressing false-nine or in any of the attacking midfield spots if given the chance this Copa.

GK: Olivér Szatmári, age 30, Sardin United

If there is one person who probably has their position on lock regardless of whoever is in charge of the national team, it would be Tomáš Přibyl, as the extraordinary keeper continues to make ridiculous save after ridiculous save at club and international level. The players who are backing him up seem to rotate on end but he has been the mainstay at the position and it is hard to make an argument against him giving how well he has played since he broke into the Royal Jam first team twelve years ago. In a theme for the team though, the players behind him have been shaken up, as Maja Topić gets rewarded for a good season with Brantisvogan and Olivér Szatmári gets recalled back into the national team after having helped Sardin have the best defensive record in the SuperLiga last season gone, being a pure shot stopped while Maja offers her lightning reflexes and a growing acumen for the game and ability to direct her defense quite well when afforded the opportunity to do so.

Defenders

RB: Dagmar Valešová, age 28, Duke of the North (F)

As Thor enters into the fray and tries to sort out the national team, few players over the age of thirty have been able to retain their place, having needed to either be in a position of weakness and could not afford to be dismissed or be simply too good not to include in the team, Jakub Svatoš is among the latter as the captain has been a real bright spot in the defense over the years. While not a defensive fullback by any means, he has the ability to track back well and do a bit of marking but he's at his best when making diving runs into the opposition area and whipping in crosses and putting in through balls for the attackers. Žužinjak will hope her summer transfer to Sardin which is renowned for its defensive prowess will keep her in the national team for a few more years yet as she looks to be the anchor in the center of the pitch, being partnered by Margo Szôts, as like many players in the pool has had a remarkable domestic season in Squornshelous. On the right that Sardin defensive muscle is on display as well with Remi van Blijderveen, who is the opposite of Svatoš, a more stay at home fullback and hopefully the two will balance each other and the formation out going forward and tracking back.

Midfielders

RW: Sumaiya Zakiyyah Aswad, age 27, Stein-los Turkish (F)
RW: Kat Földessi, age 28, CA Paulinthal (F)
A/MC: Ilona Kárpáty, age 31, CA Paulinthal (F)
MC: Moore Lafontaine, age 29, Stein-los Turkish
A/MCLR: Sebestyen Sallay, age 27, Club Stein-los
MC: Lara Pranjić, age 27, Hornchurch Image (F)
A/MC: Zágon Schmid, age 23, Tanrısal
LW: Asztrik Biró, age 27, Mâ Âlâmëómë Image
A/ML: Gillen Madrigal López, age 32, Raynor City United Image (F)

The midfield has ever been the strength of Wanderers sides and yet despite the talent the previous team had, Thor has shaken things up here as well, dropping Földessi from her spot on the right and inserting Aswad from Turkish after their remarkable SuperLiga winning season. Offering a bit more balance that her CAP counterpart, Aswad will hope to impress and make sure she is in the team and in the starting conversation still once the Qualifiers rolls around. On the left is another one of those near nailed on spots regardless of tactic or manager, as Asztrik Biró has been a real revelation and their brillaince at having broken into the Mâ Âlâmëómë first team as a teenager has definitely see them hit their full potential into a superstar now in their prime a near decade later. Dangerous as both a supplier as well as cutting in and finishing off attacking movements himself, he will be a real problem for any opposing players set to try to mark him. In the middle there is no denying the playmaking abilities of Ilona Kárpáty, and she is defying her age keeping up her pace quite well, while Moore Lafontaine looks to be her partner in a more support role and screening for the midfield. Off the bench there is Sebestyen Sallay, whose versatility in the midfield makes him quite the weapon to have, able to play nearly anywhere in the middle or slightly further forward with ease and will likely be the first man off the bench when Thor looks to change things up.

Strikers

ST: Nawar Taqwaa Bazzi, age 29, Stein-los Turkish
LW/ST: Elek Salai, age 32, Hellinic Rouge
ST: Eustacio Corral Magana, age 32, CA Paulinthal
ST: Neci Lôrinc, age 27, Galatica
AMLC/ST: Bogdan Laszlo, age 21, Algolia Image

There is no mistake, the Wanderers have a huge collection of attacking talent, but most of it is here and now and there seems a derth of it following those that are currently in the pool and it provides the biggest amount of worry outside perhaps the left wing spot for the national team moving forward once Salai and Magana are forced to hang up their boots due to age. Trying to prepare for that, Thor has decided to move Bazzi ahead of Magana, as well as the form the striker has had in the past few seasons including the last one where they were part of the SuperLiga winning effort with their goal contributions. The big story though is the inclusion of Under-21 star and Audioslavian born Bogdan Laszlo in the pool and listed as an attacking, although their preferred position is playing on the left or in behind the strikers. Their talent has been on display at the youth level and then with the first teams of Shamrock Cathair in Audioslava as well as the season prior with Algolia following their transfer. It might be that this young lad is the answer to the questions of the future of the Wanderers attack, though for now he looks to be a depth option for the team either in attack or in a more withdrawn position.

Tactics

Image

Thor comes into the side and looks to merely right the ship rather than rock the boat like Orengo had when the Banijan took over, looking to build upon the stability that Mueller seemed to bring during their interim charge of the team. Thor maintains a four four two look but one where one of the midfielders often drops into a holding or screening position in front of the defense and allows the playmaker the luxury of moving forward with the more attack oriented players out on the wings. To make sure there is good link up, Thor is asking one of the strikers to play a bit more off of the other, which should allow both pressure on the opposing defense but also the potential for link up play with the midfield, so that the entire play of the team can be more fluid and less rigid than the previous systems employed seemed to dictate.

Manager: Federico Aalto, 53 Image
Record in Charge: P 0, W 0, D 0, L 0, GF 0, GA 0, GD 0, WP n/a
A True Valhallan, Federico Aalto has been promotoed from assistant to manager of the national side pretty much by direct instruction of the Secretary General Orion Lund himself. Not that the SecGen knows who Aalto is, as such, but the circus that was Iosef Miroshnichenko's tenure in charge was entirely designed to keep column inches away from Lund's lunge for total power and the abolition of any sort of election whatsoever. To be fair to Lund, it did somewhat work, with Aalto having been under pressure from agents of the dreaded Office of Observations to contradict and work against Miroshnichenko at almost any opportunity. Fans, pundits, talking heads, and commentators alike were all pushing for Aalto to be listened to more and more, with the vast majority rightly fed up of Miroshnichenko's conservative brand of defensive football. He argued it was pragmatic, with the Terns still a long way from the standard of the best international sides, but the fans were unhappy. And when that's the national team, it means the nation is unhappy. And when the nation is unhappy with something else, Lund never lets an opportunity to get what he wants go begging. So; it became #Miroshnichenkout, and #Aaltin.

Under instruction from those at The Party who understand football a little more than Lund does, the OO will conitnue to dictate instructions, threats, and manipulations to Aalto whenever possible, in an effort to keep the football team and their fans in check now that their purpose has been served. Aalto's Külmsaari background means he is born from the same cradle that supported The Party in their rally against Sargossan influence - a path that would eventually lead Lund to taking absolute power in the Federation, and a background that The Party will continue to exploit in Aalto whenever possible, despite East Külmsaar not technically being a part of the Federation anymore. Unbeknownst to The Party however, is Aalto's little coincidental meeting with a selection of like-minded individuals in the Ocean Cafe, Bjarnarey. You can read up in my RPs, but to all intents and purposes, Aalto is currently operating as what you'd call a double agent. There is no reason for you or your characters to know this however, so keep schtum. He might appear agitated on the sidelines slightly more than usual however.

Football-wise, Aalto's Külmsaari background also means we're going to see a dramatic shift from the dirge served up by Miroshnichenko, as Aalto forms a team in his own image and attempts to overhaul the image of the side that the last manager inflicted upon the Multiverse; which was probably Aalto's only genuine source of frustration with his former boss. Saari football is relentlessly attacking, and Aalto is going to practice what he preaches. Expect lop-sided line-ups, plenty of attacking intent, and a determination to fit the best players into whatever formation that dictates. Players will swap positions, be expected to run harder than they ever have done before, and operate with a strict direction in mind: forwards. The shorter format of the Copa Rushmori also means that we can expect to see some experimentation from Aalto - both in terms of personnel and tactics.

Assistant Manager: Einar Jepsen, 52 Image
Coming in on a temporary basis, just until Aalto gets his feet under the table, is former assistant manager of the nationa u-21s side, Einar Jepsen. Having exhibited enough potential at one point to be considered a future world-beater whilst in the Jan Mayen youth ranks, injuries curtailed his development, and when he pinged his ACL for the third time at the age of just 24, he started focusing on gaining his coaching badges. Several years at Jan Mayen followed, before opting to move into the national team set-up and accompanying Erik Zhamaletdinov's revolution of the u-21s. Having impressed with his contribution from the dugout following back-to-back finals with the Chicks, he is looking to strike out on his own with a career in the slightly hotter seat to the left of him. Don't expect him to be here next time the Copa Rushmori comes around, but do expect to see him coaching the defence whilst Aalto focuses on the front-end. With his experience with the u-21s squad, he has also been instrumental in introducing some of those title-winning youngsters into the fold in this squad.

PLAYERS:
#1 - GK - Hans Aigner - Age 30 - Image East Franz Athletic Image - 45 Caps
A True Valhallan and a truly safe pair of hands. The Terns might not have covered themselves in glory since their return to international football, but without Aigner in the goalmouth, things could have been a whole lot worse. Has proved himself over and over for the Terns when he was so often the different between a one-nil win and something far less satisfying. Still young-ish for a goalkeeper, Aigner is nonetheless well aware that there are two very gifted goalkeepers on the bench right now that are just itching to unseat him from the role that has been his for so long. How will he fare with a less organised defence in front of him? Time will tell, but don't be surprised to see one of the youngsters get a run out during the group stage.

#2 - D/WBR - Rafael Kowaleski - Age 33 - Image SK Aasiaat Harbour Image - 32 Caps, 2 Assists, 1 Goal
A True Valhallan, there isn't much that Kowaleski can't do with a football. It seems at times like he was born with an innate knowledge of where the football and both goals were at all times. He does sometimes lose concentration and forget where he's supposed to be, or who he's supposed to be marking, but for a mostly risk-free option that you don't need to worry about, he's hard to beat in the Federation right now. This fact was borne out in practice when he was one of the star players of Aasiaat's most recent title win, putting in unheralded but solid performances week after week, and making the VFA Team of the Season as a result. He picked up where he left off the following season, too, and has reclaimed the starting spot for the national team as a result. The truth is though, that both he and Braun are pretty evenly matched, so with the extreme demans placed upon this position by Aalto's tactics, I'd be surprised to see Kowaleski last a full ninety minutes.

#3 - D/WBL - Jalmari Hagen - Age 23 - Image SK Franz Josef City Image - 6 Caps, 1 Assist
A True Valhallan, Jalmari Hagen's stock just keeps on rising. With his eye-catching strength and inherent star quality, if he played for anyone else you might have said he was the kind of player who was sure to end up playing for SK. He just seems to 'fit' there, so it's a rare win for the SK acadamy that they've managed to produce a player that's perfect for them already. Fast, direct, physical, and with a deft touch, Hagen is everything a modern Valhallan full-back should be. Aalto is all about the attacking, yes, but this just places more personal responsibility on the defenders to be able to defend when called upon, particularly on the left side of defence where the requirements to be buccaneering is less onerous. Fortunately, Hagen is perfectly adept at that too. Just try dribbling round him. I dare you.

#4 - DC - Heino Olsen - Age 29 - Image SK Franz Josef City Image - 19 Caps
A True Valhallan, Olsen was in the starting line-up when the Terns made their comeback to the international scene, and was naturally disappointed to see his place lost to Ohm. Was on a mission to claim his spot back as a result, and appears to have doubled his levels of professionalism almost single-handedly kept SK competing for international football at times. Tall and gangly, he looks like he'd be easy to outmuscle in the box, but possesses a wiry sort of strength that has surprised many an attacker not just with his ability to hold them off, but also with the length of his legs - that seem to have just the extra inches required to beat them to the ball when it really matters. Probably about equal with Miroshnichenko, but claims of previous nepotism means Aalto feels obliged to give Heino a starting spot in place of the former East Franz man.

#5 - DC - Odbjorn Ohm - Age 24 - Image Crisisbless (NPH) Image - 49 Caps, 1 Goal
A True Valhallan, Ohm was one of the stars of the DBC campaign in Valanora and Banija, where he played alongside Miroshnichenko as the Chicks finished runners-up to Qasden. He had already shown enough in the Terns jersey to be deemed worthy of a lift up into the starting line-up, and having continued to impress for both club and country, sparked something of a bidding war when he suggested he'd be open to a move abroad. Accordingly, and now playing for Nepharan giants Crisisbless, Ohm takes his spot as probably the naturally gifted Polarian centre-back in a couple of generations. Rumours are he isn't happy at Crisisbless however, and that a move might be on the cards in the near future - meaning this is a shop window for the strong and powerful defender with an eye for a long pass and a wicked record from set pieces in the opposition box.

#6 - DMC - Ragnar Holst - Age 29 - Image SK Aasiaat Harbour Image - 52 Caps, 2 Assists, 1 Goal
A True Valhallan, Ragnar Holst was only a teenager when he helped propel Aasiaat to their first Divisjon One titles, and he was the captain this time around as they lifted their last title. He's got fierce competition from Dementieva for the starting berth at defensive midfield, but as a DivOne winning captain he seems to have the edge in Aalto's mind thus far, as he did for Miroshnichenko. This might also be down to Aalto's previously stated idea that 'defenders should probably be good at defending on their own', with Dementieva maybe just being a bit too unpredictable. Smart, clever, lets his feet do the talking - particularly on the edge of either box - and unflappable.

#7 - AM/MC - Einar Heimark - Age 24 - Image Tikariot City FC (TKT) Image - 52 Caps, 10 Assists, 3 Goals
A True Valhallan, Heimark was the only member of the DBC runners-up squad to have already been a starter for the senior team at the time, so it was slightly surprising that he wasn't necessarily the stand-out star of that tournament for the Chicks back then. Nonetheless, he is an energetic and direct attacking midfielder who does need other players to do some of the legwork for him but is outstanding when given that license to perform. Operating almost as a second striker for his club side, his ability to draw defenders out of position should in theory create plenty of space for the other attackers to exploit, something Aalto's tactic will attempt to make use of, whilst also asking him to employ a bit more consideration and be more willing to play a supporting role when necessary. One of two players to have moved to and impressed at Tikariot City FC.

#8 - MC - Oscar Pallasmaa - Age 29 - Image 1923 Esca (MYT) Image - 56 Caps, 12 Assists, 4 Goals - CAPTAIN
A True Valhallan, Pallasmaa is possibly the most talented all-round midfielder the Federation has produced since pre-isolation. Adept at holding, knowing when to press forwards, and when to let loose with one of his famous raking long range passes, it is impossible to imagine the modern Bjarnarey without his influence, such was the club and even the city's reliance on him as a talisman. Grew up within sight of The Barge, he is a local hero to the Bjarninger, and fast becoming a national one, too. So, it's something of a shock to see another team listed alongside his name this time around. Nonetheless, we expect his star to continue to shine, and all that experience he is bringing with him from Mytanija can only be a good thing for the national team. In another era he might have been a potential all-timer, but he'll need a knockout stage win or two to his name to be able to claim anything like that, and time might be running out in the Terns' resurgence to achieve that. Will that stop him giving his all though? No, of course not. Inspirational, intelligent, and in-control. Has swapped shirt numbers as part of Aalto's revolution, but this is honestly more thanks to the amount of players ahead of him in the formation rather than an indication he's being asked to do a more defensive role. In fact, with his position being asked to drift wide and occupy the right-side of the pitch almost single-handed, his importance is only growing..

#9 - ST - Emmanuele Niemi - Age 23 - Image SK Nasjonale Hauker Image - 21 Caps, 6 Goals
A True Valhallan, Emmanuele Niemi was the talk of the Federation when he lit up DBC55 with his goalscoring, almost single-handedly propelling the Chicks all the way to the semi-finals before a freak gym accident left him on the operating table. Now playing with only one thumb, he cuts an unusual figure on the field, simultaneously looking like he's both craving attention and trying to go under the radar at the same time, and he has a very distinctive run. You can't argue with goals however, and Nasjonale look like they've secured a gem here. His father is also a former Polarian u21s international, and he was born in the Fallenmark capital of Marylebone, which is sometimes a controversial topic for some of the authorities. Turns out that even they can't argue with goals however, and Niemi ever since winning the DBC in his second attempt, he's managed to raise his game even further. An out-and-out goalscorer, he'll attempt to replicate his telepathic relationship with Nijgaard with his new strike partner Eisenhauer, but so far is just happy to have snatched the precious number nine jersey.

#10 - ST - Dmitry Eisenhauer - Age 32 - Image Tekstil Ibon (MYT) Image - 53 Caps, 1 Assist, 15 Goals
A True Valhallan, Eisenhauer is probably the closest the Terns have come in recent years to emulating Timo Skye. At least, in terms of ego. Unlikely to be remembered in the same breath as the great man, or even in the same breath as the next six or seven great men to have scored goals for the Terns, he is nonetheless as very capable and skilful striker who is extremely good at hitting the ball cleanly, and incredibly hard. When Eisenhauer kicks it, it stays kicked. Was snapped up by SK from Sibir at a young age, but when SK indicated they'd be dipping into the international transfer markets like theyr used to, his ego dictated he had to move. And so, to Mytanija. Knows he's got competition, and has raised his game as a result, so whilst one goal every three games might not sound impressive, in a Miroshnichenko Sr. side it wasn't to be sniffed at at all. How he'll fare in an Aalto side remains to be seen, with the way he's being asked to use his physical abilities to bring other attackers into the game more a similar ratio might actually represent a decent return. Whether his ego will cope with 'young Niemi' ousting him from the focal point however is a different matter.

#11 - AML - Sebastian Nylund - Age 26 - Image 1896 Ebor (MYT) Image - 54 Caps, 7 Assists, 10 Goals
A True Valhallan, Nylund can operate as a number ten but does tend to drift wide, a fact that these new tactics of Aalto's are set up to exploit. Expect to see him dominating that left side of the attacking fulcrum, popping up when and where you least expect him too, and good luck trying to mark him - he'll cut in when there are players looking for a cross and hang wide when there aren't. And yet, always seems to work out for him. He was astonishingly good for Northbrook in his final season there, but when 1896 Ebor offered him a route to Mytanijan football he jumped at it with both hands. Their gain is our loss. He has the talent to play anywhere he wants to, and is entirely capable of playing across the front line if you wanted him to, which is fortunate given Aalto's ascendency. Nimble, agile, full of tricks, and with the physique to ensure he can't get pushed around; this kid isn't a kid anymore but a fully-fledged superstar in the making... just so long as he can stay out of the nightclubs.

#12 - GK - Jaan Reusser - Age 23 - Image SK Aasiaat Harbour Image - Uncapped
A True Valhallan, Jaan Reusser won the DBC under Jepsen and drew many plaudits with his mature and intelligent goalkeeping performances. Went back to his club after that and seized the number one jersey there, and was instrumental in Aasiaat's title win, gaining a spot in the team of the season as a result. Has come on in leaps and bounds since then, with the young man that's made this squad a far cry from the boy who turned out for the Chicks. Is only going from strength to strength, and will undoubtedly challenge both Sipp for the right to challenge Aigner for the national number one jersey.

#13 - GK - Jori Sipp - Age 25 - Image FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla Image - 3 Caps
A True Valhallan, Sipp's performances at DBC55 impressed Miroshnichenko enough to earn himself a call-up into the senior squad, and he's been here ever since. Is hoping to provide competition for Aigner, alongside Reusser, and is certainly destined for big things. A nimble and cat-like penalty specialist, which might be useful later in the tournament, he was snapped up from Jan Mayen by the Flotilla in the off-season, and looks set to be a leading light for the Bargemen at the back for a long time to come.

#14 - AMC - Elvis Haugen - Age 24 - Image Qet NSC (CMT) Image - 13 Caps
A True Valhallan, Haugen is in the same boat as Sipp in this his string of performances at DBC55 convinced Miroshnichenko, or the selection panel at least, to take a punt on the latest all-round export from the Haapa-Mechelin Youth Academy to start setting their sights on international domination - and his performances from the bench have been consistently good enough to mean he's kept his spot. Not quite as a direct as Heimark, his touch and strength in possession, alongside his short and stocky frame, means getting the ball off him can be almost impossible. A great asset for keeping the ball out of dangerous areas whilst protecting a lead - attack being the best form of defence and all that...

#15 - D/WB L/R - Mikkel Makkinen - Age 22 - Image FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla Image - Uncapped
A True Valhallan, Makkinen has turned himself into something of a renaissance man at the back, and is equally adept at playing as a full-back or wing-back, and on either side of the defence. Might lack the physical strength to take up a central role, but his speed and guile mean that whichever side of defence he's deployed on will gain an intelligent and highly skilled attacking asset, able to pop up in any of the four corners of the pitch and be able to achieve his goals. With age, he's gaining confidence and the ability to trust himself as well, with a ruthless edge and desire to win that few can match.

#16 - D/WBR - Johannes Braun - Age 31 - Image Damogran (SRS) Image - 41 Caps, 2 Assists, 1 Goal
A True Valhallan, Braun's emergence as a right-back in the same mould of the legendary Moses Luc Bjerregaard can be traced back to the money that Nasjonale Hauker invested in their youth academy following their hot streak of league titles. He may have moved on to pastures new, but he's still a young lad from the East End at heart. Lightning quick, he sacrificed a promising track career to concentrate on football, and his pace more than makes up for his lack of pure tactical awareness. Was made a bit of a scapegoat for fans of both the Terns and Hauker in the past, but now he's re-found his form he's signed on the dotted line for Damogran, and will expect to provide plenty of support for Kowaleski in that demanding right-wing-back position.

#17 - DM/MC - Nic Dementieva - Age 22 - Image Rülândéá Kôstä (FFD) Image - 16 Caps, 1 Assist
A True Valhallan and a real firecracker of a midfielder, Nic Dementieva is curating a growing reputation for wild hair, impassioned tackling, and a ferocious appetite for winning the ball. Fresh from captaining the Chicks to the DBC final, he's signed up for the madness of the S-PFL, so Thor only knows what kind of player Rülândéá Kôstä are going to turn him into. But it should be interesting, anyway. Still has some maturing to do no doubt, but if you wanted to point him in the direction of the opposition playmaker and say, "Nic: destroy!" then you're going to see fireworks. Gives off a sort of 'psychiatric patient' aura that can be deeply unsettling for the opposition: if you genuinely think your marker didn't care one bit about staying on the pitch or not, you do tend to temper your actions somewhat. And yet, has never been sent off. Yet. Can play anywhere in that midfield now, a fact that will come in very useful for an Aalto midfield.

#18 - ST - Elmo Polland - Age 28 - Image Red Star Severny Image - Uncapped
A True Valhallan, Polland's recent run of form has been nothing short of remarkable. Something of a late starter, clearly, Red Star's recent climb up the table from relegation flirters to Big Six challengers has an awful lot to do with Polland. With a ruthless eye for the right angle, his touches-to-shots ratio must be amongst the best in the league, and he almost always make the goalkeeper work hard. More of a finisher than a networker, he will represent something of a Plan B for Aalto should he come on. An emotional and hard-working player, he had thought at one point that his national team opportunity had passed him by, so expect emotional fireworks to follow any fireworks he able to create in the opposition box.

#19 - MC - Marten Kallenberger - Age 23 - Image Northbrook Diamonds FK Image - 9 Caps
A True Valhallan, Kallenberger seems to have edged out Leonhardt in the discussion for utility midfield option from the bench, and it's not hard to see why. Leonhardt might have had the experience, but Kallenberger has the DBC winners medal, and more importantly, the talent. The ball seems to stick to him, he always seems to find a player with his passing, and both of those abilities are key to any Aalto side, just as they were to Miroshnichenko. Originally touted as an attacking midfielder, he's more of a carrier than that would suggest, so is labelled as a solid middle-of-the-park option in this roster, but that versatility makes him very attractive to Aalto as a result.

#20 - ST - Youssef Nijgaard - Age 22 - Image FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla Image - 17 Caps, 5 Assists, 2 Goals
A True Valhallan, Nijgaard exploded into the national consciousness with some electrifying performances at the DBC with his strike partner Emmanuele Niemi. So impressive was it, in fact, that the entire nation seemed to be clamouring for his inclusion in the first World Cup squad. Another Bjarninger native, the little floating city seems to be producing a little golden generation at the moment, and this particular member of that generation is going to have a point to prove during his time with the Terns. More of a deep lying player than an out-and-out finisher, he is a dream of a strike partner to have for others - and will fit like a dream into Aalto's front four. A leader figure given the chance, a bright future awaits for this young man.

#21 - AMC - Povl Kazimir - Age 27 - Image FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla Image - Uncapped
A True Valhallan, Povl Kazimir showed enough class in a poor Longyearbyen side to get snapped up by East Franz Athletic, but lasted only one season before being tempted away from the capital by the bright lights of... Bjarnarey?. Goes to show just how easily the best players are tempted away from Franz Josef City right now, I guess, but the Spires' loss was the Bargemen's gain in a dynamite league performance last season. Skilled, liquid in attack, and with a first touch to die for, his ability to collect a pass in flight and make a defence-splitting assist without breaking his stride is something to behold. Would rather provide than deal the cutting blow himself, his developing partnership with Nijgaard will be something exciting should they both be on the pitch at the same time.

#22 - DC - Aapo Miroshnichenko - Age 25 - Image Tikariot City FC (TKT) Image - 34 Caps
A True Valhallan, and yes, the former manager's son. He is actually good, though. Really good. Assuming he eclipses his father and manages to live up to the expectations that many hold for him, then a very bright future awaits indeed. Was a runner-up at DBC55 and won a place in the starting line-up of the Terns as a result; a position he's clung onto ever since, until now, with Aalto feeling obliged to test out other options in the face of stubborn claims of nepotism from the previous manager. There used to be a sense that 'young Aapo' wasn't quite ready to take on the Multiverse, but that's all evaporated now. One of a handful of players to have signed for clubs in Tikariot, Spires fans have missed his level-headedness and ability to read the game.

#23 - DC - Aslak Hrafninnsson - Age 26 - Image SK Nasjonale Hauker Image - Uncapped
A True Valhallan, Aslak has been climbing the ranks at Nasjonale slowly but steadily following his move from Eintracht Moss-Rygge a few seasons ago, eventually making the starting spot his own. His performances in recent seasons have also made Aalto take note, and now that he's in charge of this operation, Aslak gets the nod. With Blockhead heritage, his physical size is understandably massive, but he carries himself around the pitch rather more nimbly than you'd expect. Still, he remains very much in the 'big and mean' mould, and therefore is perfectly suited to provide an alternative to Aalto's usual plan should one be required.

TACTICS: 3-3-4

The Polarian game was famous for being methodical in its approach, calmly assessing where the weaknesses of the opposition lay before ruthlessly attacking and exploiting them mercilessly, all whilst being technically superb and abrasive in defence. Rather than a return to that spirit, fans will be hoping that Aalto is a breath of fresh air following the defensive football served up by the previous manager, and to be honest, don't really mind if they concede a dew along the way.

At the back, the centre-backs and left-back will be called upon to do most of the defending, with the right-hand-side left open for a marauding performance from either Kowaleski or Braun. Holst and Pallasmaa complete that 'central' line of what counts for a midfield, but this formation is designed to be fluid in both attack and defence so this is just a guide, really. With the right-side held down by attacks from deep, the bulk of the attacking focus comes from playing on the left, with both Heimark and Nylund tending to drift that way and make space for Eisenhauer and Niemi in the middle. Pallasmaa will go wherever the space is, and the whole tactic is based around being unpredictable and creating overloads in specific parts of the pitch at specific times.

Whether or not Aalto has had enough time to drill this into them by the time the trip to the Winter Queendom comes around remains to be seen, but it should be entertaining either way.

Which, let's be fair, is a start.

A quick IC note for your RPs:
The Federation is no longer the bastion of civil rights and political freedoms that you might remember. The long absence from international sport is thanks to an isolationist and paranoid military police state taking over, using whipped up fear against the Sargossans' claim to Külmsaar and Terra Scotia as both carrot and stick. Citizens are now preoccupied with achieving the title of True Valhallan, which is acquired through either military service, civil service, outstanding conduct, or as of recently, representing your national in international sport.

Quite why they've done all this is yet to be ascertained/revealed exactly, but the exercise is being externally described as a good way to advertise the new Valhalla to the outside world. In actual fact, Secretary General Orion Lund had an ulterior motive, one which has just been put into action; namely, the abolition of elections by distracting everyone with other events so they vote it through. There is no reason that your characters would know for certain what Lund has planned for Aalto or the nation in general, though you are free to speculate - particularly where the reappearance of Alexsandr van Sorensen is concerned, even if you won't know about the counter-movement being formed.

As an aside, the nation has also taken a rather more bullying tone towards the rest of the Valhallan Union, with Minor Valhalla now very much pressured into living up to the definition of its geographical title, and not best pleased about it.

So, the nation is no longer closed, but Valhallan fans will not yet be permitted to travel in large numbers, and organised supporters groups are currently illegal. Expect plenty of shady support staff to follow the Terns abroad, too, despite the official line that 'things are getting more and more free'; they aren't.

In short; it's Valhalla, Sven, but not as we know it...

The Captina Company Football Agency (TCCFA) controls all levels of football in the nation, issuing licenses to groups wishing to form teams. The Captina Company Football Agency National Team are approaching a metaphorical “day of reckoning” as they travel to Graintfjall for the 45th Copa Rushmori.

The move towards a mixed gender squad has been hailed as a positive development while the investment in youth that has seen participation in the Copa Rushmori Juvenil and the DiBradini Cup will begin to pay dividends as the Rosso e Oro will introduce seven uncapped players over the course of the nation's sixth appearance in the regional championship, ahead of an expected entry into the next World Cup cycle.

Jonas Yarborough has made significant progress in building the side's technical and tactical improvement upon the foundation of the once ubiquitous catenaccio system, insofar as making Captina more competitive; CR 44 in Naixi was an unqualified success with three wins—the team had only won a total of two matches previously in the competition—and three draws over nine group fixtures which raised Captina into the top 20 of Rushmori rankings.

Brief informational summary
Captina Island is the southernmost nation in Rushmore, made up of 6.3 million people of which approximately 31% are ethnic Captini--the native Polynesian type peoples who occupied the island prior to discovery--and 42% Italini, descendants of the settlers who arrived after 1922, with about 20% identifying themselves as mixed. The remainder are of other ethnic backgrounds and nationalities.

Captina Island thrives in all aspects of life thanks to the rigorous discipline of “The Plan” (officially known as The Captina Island National Community Operation Master Plan [CINCOMP]) which organizes the priorities, agenda, and the day to day running of proper society within the Armed Republic.

All economic affairs are controlled by the five major privately owned corporations that operate under the provisions of The Plan, holding exclusive license to conduct the nationwide administration of the following areas:

Captina National Organization (CNO)--Defense/Health & Medical/Education
State Economic Corporation (SEC)--Retail/Banking/Transportation/Technology
Industrial & Manufacturing Alliance (IMA)--Production/Raw Materials/Wholesale
The Captina Company (TCC)--Social/Entertainment/Utilities
Brandstadter Corporation Authority (BCA)--Food/Agriculture/Construction

Any remaining areas that would be under the control of a constituted government are handled by The Burkett Group, which is owned in equal shares by the five main corporations and a public ownership scheme funded by a 50 crown (about NS$10) per week deduction from the wages of all citizens. TBG functions as a bureaucratic administrative body, coordinating inter-company affairs in addition to providing the personnel for things like police/fire protection, vital statistics record keeping, public spaces maintenance, and other public services.

TBG operates from the National Capital District of Big Flint which has a population of 84,000, while the other corporations each have their own headquarters city, although they have nationwide operations; within each major city, the 'affiliated' companies have satellite offices to handle the daily business.

Manager: Cyril Kamembe (age: 48)

Born in the small transit village of Impangabiyaga on Statehood Day, Kirungan team manager Cyril Kamembe started his football journey as all of Kirungabi has: playing among his peers, on the banks of the twin lakes of his namesake hometown, with bushes and twigs for goals and anything as a ball. Kamembe, an ethnic Fupi, relocated to the Fupi-majority city of Imyuzure in 1985 amid economic hardship and flaring ethnic tensions in rural areas. Playing at the local Garçons du Port athletic club from 1988, Kamembe quickly honed his skills on the pitch to become one of the club's starting midfielders in the national single-level Championnat du Kirungabi de Fut in 1992, at the age of 16. Though the ensuing civil war cut his early playing career short amid the 1995 suspension of the Championnat until 2008, Kamembe returned to football at the ripe age of 34 a year after, playing for two more years before becoming manager of the GdP squad in 2017 after a small hiatus. He oversaw Championnat titles for GdP both as player and manager, including two successful championship defenses as the latter, and was selected by the Kirungabi Itangira Guhera Sporting Commission to spearhead the revival of the Kirungabi National Football Team before the 42nd Copa Rushmori. Though the regional tournament proved a modest debut for the squad, the experience led Kamembe to successfully guide an expanded national team to a thrilling Baptism of Fire title with a lossless streak to victory. Years on from that emphatic achievement, Kamembe must prove that the team's hiatus from the Copa and the World Cup will not have taken a toll on their performance.

Assistant coach: August Abihayimana (age: 54)

Kamembe's second-hand man Abihayimana played alongside the head coach at Garçons du Port in their primes, completing the opposite midfield flank to his teammate in a near flawless partnership which netted them the 1994 Championnat title. Son of a working-class Barebare couple and born in Imyuzure, the GdP midfield star made his professional football debut three years before Kamembe, and the introduction of the fresh-faced Fupi player in 1992 unlocked a new level of performance in the local man. His star status initially had kept him from suffering the first blows of the Fupi genocide of the Barebare, but as the government of the People's Republic of Democratic Kirungabi began to lose its grip on power, the incitement of ethnic violence worsened. Abihayimana and his family successfully sought asylum in Græntfjall in 1996, and it wouldn't be until 2008, the year of the Championnat reboot, that the former #7 would return to the pitch. He shared one year on the field with his former teammate upon his return to football, before sticking beside him ever since in coaching roles at Garçons du Port.

Players

The Kirungabi Itangira Guhera Sporting Commission, in charge of the Kirungan football federation FEKIFUT, has finalized their selection for the Kirungan National Football Team's return to the Copa Rushmori — their first since the Kitaran-hosted 43rd edition — in search of better fortunes after their one-goal disaster run in that tournament. Returning to international football since the 6th Brevity Cup, the team's lineup has had a moderate shuffle, in light of the relatively long hiatus and the state of domestic Kirungan football. Joining the starting XI is "super-sub" Rungayindo Gatabazi, replacing star forward Pascal Mutabazi after his and Garçons du Port's struggles in the Championnat, and solid Amahoro United midfielder David Byukusenge. On the bench, Jean-Pierre Cyuzuzo of Sport Kawakiyambu arrives, alongside rising domestic stars Mukamwezi Mukwege of Amahoro Utd and Fred Kitwana of the rapidly-improving Flambeau du Mugugu CS. First Lady and Kirungabi Itangira Guhera lead Musabyimana Uburiganya, herself involved in suggesting players for the revamped lineup, believes the refreshed squad will "skyrocket domestic stars" and "help to further grow the sport in Kirungabi".

Original coaches Johan Knockando and Ivor Gunn have moved on, the former settling into club management with Drumchapel United and the latter retiring. Finally. They've been replaced respectively by former national team captain Vadim Bauer, and former #1 goalkeeper Ivan Gunn - who is you guessed it, is Ivor's son. The rest of the backroom staff stay the same - Glendfiddich, Mallochmore and Craigellachie are known pretty much for their long surnames. But they've done (and did, once upon a time) a good enough job to be retained. Tamnavulin, to many's surprised has called up exactly the same squad as World Cup 95 to give several players one last opportunity to represent their country before they retire. Some are sentimental and are pleased with this choice, others believe he'll regret not giving young players a chance to gain experience before World Cup 96. How will this squad of aging veterans perform this Copa Rushmori? I guess we'll find out...

TACTICS:
Likely XI (4-3-3 L-R): Khamidouline; Sando, Radosavljević, de Marko, Kerla; Strathness; Slatkin; Srna; Mulahalilović, Karzharenko, Hadžiadmirović.
Glenn Tamnavulin and his staff are most likely to employ the 4-3-3-based formation they utilised last time Glazgo were involved in international competition. Whilst Khamidouline is the likely choice between the sticks, it is more than likely that Tamnavulin will rotate that duty equally between Khamidouline, Wik and Hale throughout the course of the group stage. Sando and Kerla are set to be the starting full-backs with Radosavljević and de Marko at the heart of the defence. The midfield is the most intriguing part - Strathness will operate as the defensive midfielder, protecting the defence in a role best described as a ball-winning midfielder, whilst Srna will act as the key creative point in midfield, the focal spark that will be the most advanced of the midfield triumvirate and best linked into the attack. In between the pair will be Slatkin, the proverbial glue that unites defence and attack and ports between the two whenver required. Slatkin, who could easily fill in either role if required, will undoubtedly be the unsung hero of the team and easily has the best passing range of the squad and offers both creativity going forward and grit protecting the defence. Wingers Mulahalilović and Hadžiadmirović as mentioned previously can operate as attacking midfielders as well if needed, and depending on the situation of the game they may drift inside and operate just behind Karzharenko rather than out wide. Similar to the goalkeeper position, it's expected Tamnavulin will provide at least one starting opportunity to each striker but may make his choice after all have had a run out with who he wishes to lead the line - most likely Karzharenko.

In reserve, it is likely all members of the squad will get at least one start during the group stage. Tamnavulin has always been the type of manager to give everyone a fair chance, and it's fortunate those deputising to the #1-#11 jerseys are capable enough replacements - for Glazgo's calibre anyway. Again, the choice of goalkeeper could be any of the three - so moving past there and into defence, we noticed Tamnavulin's alternate formation from before was similar to a 3-5-2. The three man defence could comprise of Snare on the left of centre and Shubukin on the right - both players who are comfortable at either side or through the middle. It's a rarity to have players comfortable with both feet at centre-back - especially in Glazgo, so either will be able to fill in at either side. Sandwiched between the two will be the more ball-playing Imamović, who is the most likely to "play out of the back" of the trio, though it should be noted he is also comfortable on either side as well as the centre. Whilst Lulić and Cardwell are much more suited to the full-back roles rather than the wing-back roles, they are certainly competent enough and will act as the main attacking threat down the wings, whilst the very young but most certainly talented Medunjanin will act as the defensive midfielder. Medunjanin boasts an excellent passing range and from the little we've seen of him, he seems to play with such confidence that only a seasoned professional may have - whilst he's impressed in the league, is it too soon for the international stage? His midfield partners could be two of either Hesso, Overtime, Panesar or Barbarez. The former two are the more "neutral" options so to speak, though Hesso can easily fill in any midfield role and Overtime is an all-action player who could probably do a job as a #6 or maybe even as a #10 if things got dire. Panesar and Barbarez offer more attacking flair, and Barbarez may also be used in a wider position should the defence end up reverting to a back four - Sando could potentially fill in further forward at left-wing, with Baraban perhaps taking his place at left-back, though they may not be as effective there as their natural positions. Again, the strikers could be any of the four, but with it being a two-man partnership it will likely be any of Sorensen, Michelsen or Slowenski.

In terms of set pieces - penalties are most likely to be taken by Slatkin, if not Karzharenko - or if in the alternate formation, most likely Hesso, Barbarez or Michelsen. Free kicks again are most likely to be taken by Slatkin or Hesso, with corners to be taken by either one of the corresponding wingers/wing-backs. For substitutions, Barbarez will hope to be seen as more than an "impact sub" but is the most likely to be able to change the game in latter stage should that be the situation. Any of the strikers could also fall into that category, whilst Hesso could replace anyone in midfield if he was not starting and experience was required. Again, opportunities for game time will be provided to all members of the squad throughout the tournament, so everyone should attain at least one start throughout the group stage, and most outfield players will get a chance to be brought on at some point.

THE NANGANG COURIER
ZHUANG'S COALITION HOLDS ON TO ENTER GOVERNMENT
SAFETY AND PROSPERITY 79 (+79) • LIBERATION ARMY 74 (-60) • ALLIANCE FOR FREEDOM 73 (+55)
PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS 57 (+28) • OTHER 17 (+3)

Huang Xiewen, POLITICS

NANGANG -- In some ways, new President Zhuang Weilun and Vice President Huang Zhen have taken very similar paths to this election result. Both were high-ranking cabinet officials whose policy knowledge enabled a rapid rise through the party ranks. Both defied their party leaders to form a new coalition closer to the median right-center voter. And now, Zhuang's Safety and Prosperity Party and Huang's Alliance for Freedom are walking hand in hand to Xingruifang, as their electoral alliance has won one hundred and fifty two seats - one more than a majority - in the Yue Assembly.

The revelation that the National Union government knowingly failed to completely stop a terrorist attack on Yue soil that killed five Yueren and injured twenty-six, as well as an increasingly authoritarian turn from President Liang Ziyou that prompted Zhuang to split from Liang's Liberation Army faction, made it a tense and ill-spirited campaign. All four of the parties with the highest vote share received official complaints from other parties to the Yue Electoral Commission for alleged election interference, although ultimately no party was conclusively found guilty. Zhuang and Huang both elicited intense criticism for immediately forming an electoral alliance and agreeing not to run candidates against each other, while Progressive Democrats leader Shang fended off an attempted coup from his party's left flank. Still, despite - or possibly because of - all the electoral hijinks, voters ultimately opted for the stablest pair of hands (or in this case, two pairs of hands), the alliance's pragmatic conservatism resonating most with an increasingly weary Yue populace at the end of the day.

The election, the fifth time voters have chosen the Yue Assembly, was also notable for what many psephologists claimed to be a significant electoral realignment. With a scandal-ridden National Union winning just a single seat and the incumbent Liberation Army heavily damaged as well, voters often seemed to buck geographic conventions of the previous elections. While the Alliance for Freedom unsurprisingly found the most joy in similarly center-right National Union's former bases of Nangang and Jiangdong, the Safety and Prosperity party enjoyed much more cross-regional appeal, notably snatching several left-wing strongholds in the city of Beian from under the Progressive Democrats' noses. But a recent centrist turn from Shang Ziyang's party also saw increased support from sections of Nangang and Jiangdong with higher student populations, suggesting the Yue left could soon mount a serious challenge for the Yue Assembly.

For now, though, the day belongs to the center-right once again, as both Zhuang and Huang will try to return Yuezhou to relative political stability in the wake of a tumultuous half-decade with Liang Ziyou at the helm. Another surprise winner is the Yue-Farf corpostate Lithico™, which Zhuang is rumored to have close ties with, and who is already beginning negotiations to open a series of new factories across Jiangdong. "Today, the Yue people voted for a return to clean, sane government," the fourth and newest President of Yuezhou announced in his victory speech, in which he also noted that Liang Ziyou had yet to formally concede the election. "Politics does not have to be constant scandals, smear campaigns, and partisan points-scoring. No matter which party you supported, all Yueren want lower prices, higher growth, and safer streets, and we will dedicate ourselves to achieving these goals for the people." From your mouth to God's ears, Zhuang Weilun.

It was the night before Copa and Paal Svendsen had bought six bottles of cognac, five jars of gherkins and a big slab of rolled head cheese. He was all but set to enjoy the upcoming Copa-mania in blissful solitude. But his ambitions would not go unopposed.

It started with his brother Wilhelm, who phoned him and insisted Paal come stay at their house for the length of the tournament, sleeping in their guest-room and watching all the games with his family. With the apparent chronic case of norovirus that kept the kids throwing up all over the place and the awkward poetry and awful dog. Like that was supposed to sound enticing. No, thank you. He had hoped he wouldn’t have to go through this horrendous circus once more, but it seemed the dragons were still as persistent as ever. «No,» Paal said simply and hung up the phone. He retired to his favorite chair and opened his first bottle of cognac, but he wasn’t more than two or three cups in before the phone rang again.

He contemplated not answering, but when he finally did it was, predictably, his sister Augusta who had heard from Wilhelm about Paal not agreeing to spend Copa Time with his family. She insisted Paal came over to her and Emily’s house and watch the games with them. He could sleep on the sofa if he liked, she had chirped. He pictured the prospect briefly and shuddered. The chickpeas and the scented candles, the distasteful tattoos and neo-shamanism drivel; he’d rather get puked on repeatedly by his niece. Luckily, he had a choice and didn’t have to suffer neither scenario. He bluntly told his sister «No» and hung up the phone.

Paal cracked open a jar of gherkins, poured himself a generous cup of the liquid brown and tuned his radio to the GPR jazz station. A mild sedation had begun enveloping him when the phone rang again a couple of hours later. He answered in wrath, expecting it to be his mother calling to chide him for so brusquely dismissing his siblings, but it turned out to be his boss asking for some quarterlies and previews and it all became very awkward very quickly. Paal complied and compiled, his decreased coordination contributing to it taking double the time it should have. With the email finally sent and the boss content, Paal disconnected the phone, opened up another bottle and took a big bite out of the head cheese.

His solace only lasted for a while, because in the early hours of the morning he was rudely awakened by the doorbell. He struggled a bit getting up and the cluttered floor didn’t make answering the door any easier. This time it actually was his mother calling on him, flanked by his father, siblings, nephews and nieces, aunts and uncles along with a string of his coworkers. He cordially told them all to go fuck themselves before slamming the door in their faces, although it’s debatable how much of that came through his slurred speech.

And so it all looked set to be yet another Copa Rushmori enjoyed in his fortress of solitude. Paal smiled at the thought of how easy they had been to rebuke this time around. He remembered that time the Copa was played down in Ceni and how he had been virtually under siege for the entire duration of it. He had prevailed in the end, of course, he always did, but it had taken considerable effort. He went back into his living room, opened another bottle and helped himself to a mouthful before rolling up on the sofa. It was game night tonight, and he could do with a few more hours of sleep before it all kicked off.

He awoke startled. It was impossible to tell if minutes or hours had gone by; all Paal knew was that he had a craving for some mackerel in tomato sauce. Neither the fridge nor the pantry had any in stock, but seated at his kitchen table was an elderly man with a stern face. It took Paal a minute, but then he realized it was former Dandelion head coach Bjørnstjerne Eriksen. «Why are you here, Mr. Eriksen,» Paal asked in shock. «I’m the Ghost of Copas Past, and I’m here to show you the error of your ways,» Eriksen answered, and with a snap of the coach’s fingers the setting changed from Paal’s kitchen to a lush pitch where The Dandelions were being beaten savagely by Cassadaigua. Another snap, and another pitch, this time with The Union falling to Tikariot, and then another and another. «You see now?» Eriksen asked. Paal didn’t see, and he said as much. «Where were you, when our boys failed to overcome their enemies?» the coach answered. And then Paal suddenly found himself back in his favorite chair.

Paal looked at his watch and it was getting late; the opening game would be starting any minute now. He reached for the nearest bottle with shivering hands and attempted to get himself leveled with a quick swig. «Intense dream», he thought to himself and he started looking for the remote. He couldn’t find it anywhere and started searching the rest of his house. When he finally returned to the living room - still empty-handed - he was greeted by a man with a slick haircut and a piercing gaze from behind horn-rimmed glasses. Paal didn’t need long to recognize the man as current Dandelion head coach Enda Clentin.

«I suppose you’re the Ghost of Copas Present,» Paal said and sat down in his favorite chair. Enda nodded. Paal asked him where they were going, but Clentin said «Nowhere» and then returned to silence. After a while Paal started getting frustrated and asked if they could at least turn on the game against Cabo Azure, but Clentin only shook his head. «Why are you here then? Speak Ghost of The Valley!» Paal screamed and got up. He rummaged around the sofa after the remote, but had to settle for bits of the head cheese. He returned to his chair. «You’re the worst fucking ghost ever,» Paal said to the still silent Clentin, while chewing on a stray gherkin. «I want the Ghost of Copas Future.» Coach Clentin got up, straightened his jacket and then fixated his gaze on Paal. «Don’t you get it? There’ll be no Copas future if you don’t straighten the fuck up; the dream will die with you», the coach shouted, in a very un-stoic manner.

And then Paal woke up. It was morning. He got up and he knew exactly what he needed to do. He had always known there was something special about him, and now he had the answer: Dandelion Copa success was utterly contingent on him, and he needed to get out of the house to break the jinx. He collected three jars of gherkins, a half-full bottle of cognac and about two thirds of the rolled head cheese, put on a jacket and headed out to his brother’s house, where he knew most of his family would be gathered. Be it by delirium or some arcane magic, no matter, it was nothing short of a Copa miracle.

Team Cassadaigua- Copa Rushmori 45

Coach- Chen Huikang (60)

The post Brittany Byers era began in World Cup 94 with the first international manager hired to coach the national team since Alexander Pappas led the team. Pappas only led the team to World Cup champions in the 50th and 51st editions, so while the expectations will not be to duplicate that right away, the nation is confident with him at the helm. In all of Cassadagan sports, he is only the second international manager to be taken on. The other was Maddie Polanco in baseball, who also ultimately led Cassadaigua to a title. Chen has experience with the national team of his homeland, Yuezhou, and his domestic record includes a successful stint with CSKA Quebec. With several key Cassadagan players also playing in Quebec, that was also seen as an asset. Chen likes an attacking style, and we have seen that so far.

He has had quite a bit of success early on, leading the Fillies to championships in the first two tournaments he coached: Copa Rushmori 43 and RTC World Cup 19. He then led the team to the championship game in the Eagles Cup all before officially leading the team in World Cup 94. Last cycle, he got the team to World Cup 95B (Cup of Harmony 87), before an ineffective group stage.

Assistant- Kimberly Carson (49) (Winchester City)

Carson was successful with the national team for multiple Cups and has since moved on and made Winchester City more of a title threat within the CSL. The defender will focus on that aspect of play to coincide with Chen's attacking mindset. She has been the assistant of Chen since his first tournament here.

Starters in Green
Subs in Blue
Reserves in Red

Goalkeepers:
#40- Stacey Schalberg (27) (Grande Mountain)- Sub CR 43, Reserve CR 41. Started WC 94 from MD7 onwards & WC 95
#30- Lacey Horvath (20) (Starksville Coastal)- Starter RTC 19, Reserve RTC 18 &WC 95
#20- Erica Knapp (26) (Concord Heights City)- Starter CR 44, Reserve WC 93 & 94, CR 43

A similar group to the World Cup 95 cycle, with Stacey Schalberg returning as starter, however the Stacey & Stacie duo is no longer present as Stacie Thornton opted out of the competition. This moves Horvath up in the pecking order, and gives another opportunity to Erica Knapp.

Defenders:
#2- Madison Rutland (32) (Starksville Coastal)- Starter WC 91-95 , CR 40-43, DBC 51 & 52 (TEAM CAPTAIN)
#4- Tiffany Brown (27) (Starksville Coastal)- Starter WC 94-95, CR 43-44, Sub WC 93 & CR 42
#3- Alyssa Marlin (27) (Winchester City)- Starter WC 93-95 & CR 43-44, Sub CR 42
#6- Rachel Becker (28) (New Lakeland SC)- Starter WC 93-95, CR 42 & 43, Sub WC 92, Reserve CR 41

#32- Michelle Lawson (24) (Winchester City)- Sub WC 94-95, Reserve CR 43
#49- Kirsten Hughes (26) (Brattleboro FC)- Sub CR 44

#21- Stacie Rinaldi (18) (Concord Heights Suburban)- International Debut
#36- Callie Houghton (22) (Grande Mountain)- Starter RTC 19, Reserve WC 95

Somewhat surprisingly, all four of the starters from the last World Cup cycle are going to be in the same role here for the Copa Rushmori, because there was some question as to whether or not Chen Huikang wanted to check out some different options. That’s not going to be the case, although some different names, like Rinaldi and Hughes are seen down the depth chart.

Midfielders:
#28- Rachel Wyman (22) (Montreal City, Quebec)- Sub CR 43 & Wc 95, Starter RTC 18, Reserve WC 94
#24- Lauren Engle (22) (Montreal Koreana, Quebec)- Starter WC 94-95 & CR 44, Sub CR 43, Starter RTC 18
#25- Chrissy Engle (22) (Shirley Metros Ladies FC, Baker Park)- Starter CR 44 & WC 95, Sub WC 94 & CR 43, Starter RTC 18

#35- Marquis Miles (28) (Victoriaville City)- Sub WC 92, 94 & CR 42, 44; Reserve CR 41 & WC 93 & 95
#31- Emma Woodward (18) (Concord Heights City)- International Debut

#38- Emma McHugh (27) (Starksville Coastal)- Reserve CR 44
#39- Cassandra Hauck (30) (Grande Mountain)- Sub CR 44

Kaitlin Millikan was reportedly not happy when told that Chen Huikang wanted to move her out of the starting lineup to give the Engle’s a chance to start with Rachel Wyman, and that led to her opting out altogether. We’ll have to keep an eye on that situation to see if it leads to any additional drama down the road. Seeing this lineup should excite fans, since none of the big three midfielders play in the CSL. Emma Woodward, a CSL teammate of Millikan in Concord Heights City, is essentially her replacement, and we should expect to see her get a bunch of playing time.

Forwards:
#43- Lexi McGregor (25) (Starksville United)- Starter WC 94-95 & CR 43, Sub WC 93, CR 42, Reserve WC 92
#16- Lacey Sherwood (25) (Rutland Dockside)- Starter CR 43, Sub WC 94, Reserve WC 93 & 95, & CR 42
#29- Shannon Cunningham (24) (Alino, Chromatika)- Starter WC 94- 95 & CR 43, Sub WC 93 & CR 42

#27- Allyson Perry (30) (Winchester City)- Sub WC 92, CR 41, Starter DBC 52 & CR 44, Reserve WC 91, 93, 94, 95 & CR 42, 43
#19- Chloe Anderson (30) (Montreal Koreana, Quebec)- Starter WC 92-94, CR 40-42 & DBC 51, Sub WC 90, 91 & 95, CR 43

#45- Taylor Westfall (28) (Victoriaville South End)- Sub CR 44
#44- Katelyn Morgan (18) (Concord Heights Suburban)- International Debut

Lexi McGregor is back in the Copa Rushmori after opting out of the last one, and we will get another opportunity to see her team up with Shannon Cunningham. Additionally, Lacey Sherwood gets a chance to start, which is good to see. She’s more than earned the chance. Allyson Perry, who’s been a trooper down the depth chart for many competitions may get more chances this time around, too.

TACTICAL INFORMATION
OUT OF POSSESSION (4-4-2):
Denis Ovsyannikov will retreat from a traditional attacking midfield position into central midfield to form a pair with Eduard Issatsenko. Stoja Stanoev and Pere Prosev-Prlicko will both play fairly narrow too, but will in practice be the 'wide midfielders' in the four man midfield. Ivica Svok wants to protect the centre of the pitch and is therefore playing narrow in this area of the pitch, this does mean that room may be available down the sides of the Mytanija formation (it could particularly be exploited by attacking fullbacks / wingbacks overlapping wingers, creating wide overloads). Mytanija will retreat into their own half when out of possession, aimed at drawing the opposition onto them and then pressing from around the halfway line with Aljoz Seslar and Goran Papic-Papratovic leading this press and attempting to 'pin' the opposition against one sideline, if either of the strikers have success with this then the central and wide midfielder on their side of the pitch will also jump to join the press and try to win the ball back.

IN POSSESSION (3-2-5): When possession is won back Mytanija will aim to attack at speed. The 3-2-5 shape is quite familiar, constituted by three defenders (Filip Mlinarevic, Bigger Mbala-Ekakia and Antonij Gjuricik tucking in from right-back), two central midfielders (Pere Prosev-Prlicko and Nurija Papez moving across to a more central position); and five other players across the attacking third. On the left side is Idris Beganovic, who has a big task in having to get up and down the left flank all game, his input in the attacking third is valuable and the way he maintains the width on this side ensures Mytanija don't become too narrow. Stoja Stanoev will operate in the space between Beganovic and Seslar, but has something of a free role to pop-up across the width of the pitch. Seslar will act as the main central striker, whilst Denis Ovsyannikov and Goran Papic-Papratovic will rotate between playing wider or trying to exploit the space in between the other and Seslar on the interior of the pitch. Attacks will be more about trying to get the ball forward quickly and effectively than maintaining long periods of possession, a change from the tactic Svok used to get Mytanija to the World Cup.

NOTES:
• Ivica Svok (aged 40)
was called in as interim coach when Mytanija lay five points out of a playoff place with five matches to go in World Cup 95 qualification. The FSM had always been divided over the appointment of Misel Ravnjak and the bad form appeared to finally do for the great man. Svok is a much younger replacement with a much less impressive track record, only managing Nyva Zvornik and overseeing two promotions and one relegation from the 1. Prvenstvo in his time as manager. Svok is much younger, recently did his coaching badges with the FSM and had a solid if unspectacular playing career with several domestic sides which means he is well-respected around the game in Mytanija. It was something of a shock appointment, regarded by some as the FSM just trying to get someone in to create a good feeling around the side before a new manager could refocus for the Copa Rushmori and World Cup 96. Somewhat unexpectedly Svok managed to complete a miraculous recovery over the five qualifying games, overturning the gap between Mytanija and Naixi, winning five matches out of five whilst scoring eight goals and conceding none. He instilled a solid if slightly pedestrian possession game which didn't allow the players to take too many risks and got the job done. He was pragmatic in that he needed the players to win the games, preferring to only tinker with the system slightly in the fifth of the five games he had as interim coach when Mytanija needed to score goals to keep qualification in their own hands. That led to the 4-3-1-2 ish shape we see now, which results in a 4-4-2 out of possession and 3-2-5 when Mytanija have the ball. It's also the shape which the Hoops used to defeat Huayramarca 3-2 in the qualification playoff, a comeback victory which really earned Svok his stripes and got Mytanija to a 17th World Cup proper. At the World Cup he got Mytanija out of the group for the first time in a few editions of the tournament and that has led to him being awarded the job on a permanent basis. Back with Nyva he unexpectedly kept them up, his tactical approach allowing them to avoid relegation despite pretty much everybody betting against them. For Copa Rushmori 45 Svok has decided to go with a fully domestic-based team, with the tournament coming between seasons.

• Mytanija has qualified to 17 World Cups, most recently World Cup 95, the country's biggest achievement in that competition is reaching the quarter finals in World Cup 68. Mytanija has won the Copa Rushmori once (XVII), to go with two victories in the Cup of Harmony (56 and 59); and a Di Bradini Cup win (DBC40). Some of these achievements were made under the names Mytannion/the Mytanar Region, Mytanija is ICly the exact same place.

• Mytanars are renowned for being passionate and therefore will not be afraid of confrontation if they feel they're on the end of a particularly rough tackle. At the same time Mytanars are not afraid of gamesmanship and may perform some questionable tackles of their own, along with tactical fouls to prevent the opponent from gaining momentum. Furthermore, diving, crowding referees and even intentional handballs (OOC: so Maradona's Hand of God and Suarez for Uruguay versus Ghana, that sort of stuff), to influence the game are not beyond Mytanar players. They will argue that winning is the most important thing and will do anything they can to achieve victory. Some might call it dirty, Mytanars don't, that won't stop them complaining when things go against them naturally.

• Mytanar fans are well-known for being hooligans, causing problems wherever they go and being prone to violence. They also make outstanding choreographies for their domestic sides and occasionally the national team (if they aren't fighting each other), so pyrotechnics, flags and lots of noise and alcohol are common place. Corteos (organised marches from a specific place to the stadium), are also common, these can lead to areas being shutdown as the sheer numbers of fans walking along roads block traffic and can lead to issues as police attempt to marshal supporters too. Given the ongoing political situation in Mytanija, whether ultra groups are able to put aside differences regarding politics, ethnicity etc for the national side is a pertinent question and the answer to it may change even from game to game.

Tactics:
Newly hired manager Geraldo Rys and his assistant Mara Tapi have decided to implement a slightly aggressive 3-5-2 formation in Zenic's first tournament in decades. This formation is intended to maximize the wingbacks' strengths without neutralizing the rest of team's impact. The young wingbacks' stamina allows them to go forward and cautiously assist in attack to create goal-scoring chances while still being able to get back and provide numbers to stop opposition scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, the Centerbacks, Central Midfielders and Forwards create a solid pillar through the heart of the pitch that is intended to both be an alternative route to goal scoring and a multi layered obstruction to the opponents.

Notes:

Zenic’s first World Cup cycle since their return has been rough, as many experts had believed it would be, but it has not been without its bright spots. Now, at the start of the second full cycle, the Ministry of Sport is hoping for Zys, his staff, and his selected squad to play to the level of brilliance (this young team displayed previously) more frequently.

The Beaucester Gazette
Porras Backs Self

Out of ideas or sticking to his guns?

How many changes between the World Cup and Copa Rushmori squads? One. With Lara Beaugemont carrying an injury, she didn't make the plane to Graintfjall. Livvy Jennings, one of Hellenic's increasingly dependable performers, makes her bow for the national team instead. The lineup sees some reshuffling, but the bigger question is why is Porras sticking with a side that flopped in Sylestone. Some think he has run out of road here, but there may be answers in how he views football.

First, those minor changes. Girello looks likely to get his first cap, with his star continuing to rise at Wirr Tsi, his excellent distribution and ability in possession has seemingly trumped the benefit of Garavakos' superior shot stopping. Roberto Palm comes in at right-back in place of Jenny Scoular, bringing back the attacking threat from this position that was vacated when Beresford left the squad. Finally, Benedetti drops back to being a bench option, allowing Anya Marakakis a route back to first team football. Palm and Girello are the only new ones to the setup, but they offer even more of what he demands of each respective position.

This isn't the revolution some were demanding. Hobbled by the absence of Beresford, Hightower and Speight at the last tournament, many wanted Porras to try his options. It seems obvious though that these are simply the best available to him. Elmyia is a small country, with a small talent pool. It turn out if you alienate 4 of the best players through unnecessary political finagling at the FF then you're going to struggle.

The change to a more pragmatic set of tactics has been another, more realistic, proposal. Having a bit more control in games wouldn't be a bad thing, but ultimately Porras doesn't believe he's going to achieve that by picking a safer central midfielder, or a more defensive set of full-backs. At his core Porras adheres to a different school of tactics to those around him.

As he's explained it, he believes the relations between players, and their ability to work together and learn each others game, is more important than positions or coach drilled patterns of play. The latter school of thought is often known as positionism. It values attacking football just as much as Porras does, but it priorities creating a structure and a system to get more out of players. Relationism doesn't value this structure, allowing players to work things out organically on the pitch. This requires players to be used to each other, to have played together before. Given this, it makes sense that Porras has held the same group together.

Up first and Elmyia face Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland. Last time they faced each other, Elmyia managed to squeak out a 2-1 victory in a campaign that ultimately ended in disappointment. Elmyia struggled in that tournament as their paper thin squad found itself stretched by a difficult schedule. Given they're lacking depth even more now, this tournament could be another slog.

Millikan’s opt out and the Copa Rushmori,
By Caitlyn Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

The 45th Copa Rushmori will be kicking off soon from Graintfjall and the Fillies will be looking to get something positive to talk about after struggling in World Cup 95B*. Most people around the team are not talking about what happened in that tournament. That includes CASE President Stephanie Sweeney who told reporters that, “While we are not erasing the World Cup qualifiers from memory, what happened in 95B is simply being thrown out by us. We’re not going to get into the reasons, but are we just going to pretend it never happened? Well, yes.” Many players also shared that sentiment around that competition, but say they will not get into what the reasoning is for so easily dismissing a major competition.

A key part of that team was Kaitlin Millikan in the midfield, and no one would have pinned any blame on her for the team’s failure to get into the World Cup 95A group. Kaitlin was informed a couple of weeks ago by Chen Huikang that he wanted her to be on the bench for the game, and potentially be a late game substitution. At the time, Kaitlin was intending on participating in the Copa Rushmori, but instead decided she would opt out of the competition. On social media, Kaitlin talked more about her decision, saying in a video posted to her Spacebook account that, “As much as I want to play for my country, this is another example of me not being appreciated. It started by keeping Morgan in that spot longer than was probably best, and now I am being pushed out of it for the younger players. How come when I was a younger player, I was never afforded the same opportunity? I know this may have some repercussions and I am prepared to handle them but if I am not going to start, I’d rather just not freeze my ass off in Graintfjall.” Morgan means Morgan Rosenblatt, who’s opportunity to start at 35 in World Cup 93 was unexpected, even though she was clearly slowing down. Former manager Brittany Byers stuck with that long time captain even while she ineffective, instead of starting Millikan. Kaitlin had also been a reserve in World Cup 92. During World Cup 94, she would finally get a chance to start and was considered outstanding, but in World Cup 95, when the interest in the Engle twins and Rachel Wyman coming about, the writing seemed to be on the wall. Kaitlin did get to start in World Cup 95 for most games, but likely sees Chen Huikang’s decision as a no win situation for her. The 27-year old midfielder from Concord Heights City also made mention in another video of how both the Engles and Wyman play domestically overseas and she plays at home. Some feel that’s actually the reason Chen wants to start the Engles and Wyman, because it’s a chance to see them as a unit up close when seeing Millikan is easier while she plays in Concord Heights City.

This is the first bit of controversy that Chen Huikang has had to deal with in terms of personnel decision, but most seem to be supporting him. The likely reason for that is more of a desire to see the 22-year old Engles play, as well as Rachel Wyman, who is also 22. It’s possible we could see the club go back to a base 4-4-2 formation, which had been more common around the time Graintfjall last hosted the Copa Rushmori eighteen years ago (among many other things that are different about Cassadaigua since then), but the recent trend has been to use the 4-3-3. None of those younger players have said anything about the controversy, and neither has Lexi McGregor. That part of it isn’t a given since we know that Lexi loves to speak her mind about anything and everything. Reporters have tried to get sound bytes out of McGregor, but all she has said is that she’s not worry about any of the backstory. Whether or not that part changes, remains to be seem. McGregor, being 24 herself, would seem to be more likely to side with the Engles. Yeah, Lexi’s still only 24. Wow!

For the competition, the third-ranked Fillies will be in Group 4, meaning a trip to southern Graintfjall. They’ll open in Kyrkdorf against Darmen in a city that should have some of the freshest air out there given the prohibition on smoking. Of course, that might not be the case at all given what else we know about the city. It sounds like where Grande Mountain was a couple of centuries ago, quite frankly. We’ve evolved and in fairness, they really have as well. Still, if you’re going to go to this game, you might want to stick with hanging out with Cassadagans or Darmenis.

* (OOC)- Cassadagan publications no longer recognize the Cup of Harmony as being a secondary tournament due to the strength of the competition while the main World Cup is only 32 teams. Instead, media sources and the players consider qualifying to instead be a classification system to determine which World Cup that we participate in. We no longer recognize it as the Cup of Harmony, and instead call it the World Cup’s “B” field.

The Copa Rushmori, a tournament that was in large parts founded by Pasarga, back in the age where the premier nations within the region were itself, Nethertopia, C&M, and of course Sargossa. It was a time before the region had exploded onto the scene as a major power and player in the international arena, before the region started to win World Cups with a decent regularity or really even have multiple teams that made it into the Finals. Forty-four editions have come and gone and there has been much change within Rushmore as well as Pasarga herself, as the regional competition enters into the final decade of its first century of being. Right now the Wanderers are looking for a change not into the future but back towards the past, back towards a time where they were in around the dominant teams of the region, where the Copa Rushmori was their stomping grounds and they entered into the tournament not as a mere competitor but a real belief that they would be able to put in a deep run into the tournament and had a high chance of walking away with the trophy.

The last three editions of the tournament have been tournaments to forget for the proud Pasargan side, as multiple upsets in the group stage tournament in each successive edition has seen them unceremoniously dumped out at the group stage when they were odds on favorites to be advancing and making it into the knockout stages. Even in the last edition of the tournament there was a real belief that the Wanderers would be able to navigate their way out of the group and into the knockout rounds, even if they were likely to be eliminated in the first round of them, they still would have been able to shake the slump that they had seemingly been on in the two editions prior. Yet the upset bug struck again and hard and the side had to once more swallow their disappointment of not advancing and try to bow out as a gracefully as one can at the first point of asking when you had such high hopes for so much more. These last few editions have certainly humbled the team, as well as the subsequent failure to qualify for the World Cup this cycle despite a top ten performance in terms of points collected, drawing on the last matchday of the group and then losing in the playoff, once again bit by the upset bug at the precisely wrong moment if you ask those in Torgos their feelings.

Not only has the group stage exits meant a severe lesson in humility for the team, it also has completely devastated their ranking within the region and they are now a third seed and no longer seen as a side who is likely to be advancing past the group stage but rather just a stern test for the top two seeds as they get ready for the gauntlet of the knockouts. The group for the Wanderers this time around has seen its difficultly spike as the team has slipped down the rankings and the seeding status that it had become quite accustomed to over the many long decades of being a prominent power within the region. Hosts Graintfjall, who are the best team in the region according to the regional rankings, highlight this difficultly as they are now among the premier teams not just in the region but in the entire sport and will have the benefit of playing on home soil, they should easily be moving through to the knockouts with ease. It is the teams that come after the hosts that raise a few eyebrows and why there is a feeling that Group 1 is the Group of Death in this edition of the tournament.

Besides the Wanderers, who clock in at rank fifteen according to the regional rankings, there is second seed Oberour Ar Moro, who are twelfth by the same rankings and have seen a dramatic increase in quality of their football over the last few years. While they are good and normally would be whom the Wanderers would be attempting to wrestle for the second spot and advancement from the group, the fourth seed of Polar Islandstates is what really adds quite a bite of spice into the mix and gives it the foreboding feeling of a group of death. Lest we forget, the Polarians were once the crowned kings of the sport and their league, their national team was at the pinnacle. That might be three decades or so ago, but they have roared back with a vengeance, winning titles at the youth level and looking all the bit of dangerous as they were at the peak of their power while only having recently returned to international football. Zenic and Kirungabi round out the group and though the Wanderers might not have much history or knowledge about them, it does not make them any less dangerous in what seems quite the already dangerous group to try and get out of at what is a weakened Wanderers side.

There is reason for optimism though, as legendary striker turned manager Ingþór Auðbjörnsson has returned from a long voyage in the White Winter Queendom to take the reigns of the Wanderers after Orengo's sacking at the end of the qualifying campaign. The exploits of Thor as a player is the stuff of legend in the dual islands but his conquests as a manager might even be more impressive, turning GT Molding into a powerhouse within the nation and winning titles, then transitioning over to the national team manager of the Snow Wolves and continuing their reign of success after they had won the World Cup prior to his appointment. His returns is seen as the prodigal son returning home and bringing with him the hope that the side might be able to turn back the clocks and be once more a powerhouse of the world's game, taking over from where Michael Mueller was interim and lead the team to their second Cup of Harmony title. He brings a more measured approach and a return to a four four two, though he prefers to play with one of the central mids in a more withdrawn role either as a playmaker or screener for the defense, a system far more comfortable for Pasargans than the adventures of the four three three that turned into a three five two in attack. Whether the return of a hero and a traditional formation brings back the glory and bats away the upsets that have plagued the side remains to be seen, but for the first time in three years, there is hope once more for the Wanderers and it is palpable.
