National Information

The Kingdom of Banija is a country that classifies itself as a semi-constitutional monarchy. A nation that is a member of Atlantian Oceania, it is led by the Kabaka(which translates to King), and the current monarch is Kabaka Mwanga. The Kabaka, alongside with the Waziri(translates to Foreign Minister), whom he picks and dismisses solely at his pleasure, is the Head of State and responsible for the country's foreign affairs. Upon reaching age 25, the Isebantu(Crown Prince), becomes the Waziri by constitutional right. The current Isebantu is Isebantu Mutungi. The full list of members of the Royal Family can be found here.

Kabaka Mwanga ascended into power after the assassination of his father, Kabaka Albert III during World Cup 82 Qualifying. This is, of course, a government with an elected element. The elected unicameral legislature is the Lukiiko(Parliament), and the Lukiiko is responsible for governance of domestic affairs. The Katikkiro(Prime Minister) is elected by the Lukiiko. After over a decade of rule by the left, this traditionally conservative nation has shown its true colors again by electing a coalition led by the center-right People's Protection Movement. The Katikkiro is Kobe Azizi, who is currently serving in his second term as Head of Government. The established church is the Puritan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, most commonly known as Puritan Mormonism. Well over 90% of Banijans identify as adherents to the state church, though freedom of religion is generally respected by the law and the populace. There is very little patience and open disdain, however, for atheism among the general populace. Courts are sometimes known not to enforce freedom of religion laws when it comes to those preaching atheism, which is considered an 'evil' view by many Banijans.

Due to the massive influence of Puritan Mormonism in this nation, they are relatively socially conservative. Abortion in this country is outlawed unless the mother's life is in danger, and polygamy for males is legal. The church's Universal Call to Motherhood, which teaches that the destiny of each and every woman is to give birth to children and raise faithful Puritan Mormons, has heavily shaped the nation's view on the role of women in society, forming the basis for Banija's prior sports gender segregation laws in the first place. Consumption of alcohol and the recreational use of marijuana in Banija is legal. Due to Mormon tradition, however, the purchase/sale of coffee products is illegal within Banija- however, the consumption is not. Fans and teams are allowed to bring in their own coffee products as long as they are declared at customs, where it is then taxed per pound. Any attempt or effort to sell the product, however, can and will result in arrest.

Most people in the country speak both Olusanke, the local dialect, and English. There is a smattering of Korean spoken within the country, thanks to Banija's Quebecois roots. Banija's currency is the shilling. The exchange rate to the NationStates Dollar is 100 shillings to 1 NSD. Conversion kiosks will be available at all hotels and at airports to exchange your money, as well as any banks. However, using the NSDs directly to purchase items is only guaranteed at stadiums and hotels- vendors outside of stadiums or hotels are not required to accept NationStates Dollars. Fans are also advised that street vendors will only take cash, according to Banijan law- as an issue of security to prevent against credit card theft.

Of course, Banija was for a long time known as a developing country and more of a backwater Economically. However, due to a recent discovery of large oil deposits in Hangaza during World Cup 82, the country has been engaged in an economic miracle since then, with the country almost reaching true developed country status. Public transit within cities is via the boda boda, though each team/delegation will have passenger busses provided by the RTC to transport players, coaches, staff, family, etc... To and from the hotel to the games and practices. The climate of Banija has a lot of natural rainforest and jungle, which means that there is no winter, only wet season and dry season. Temperatures generally range at their coldest around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and at their hottest around 110 degrees Fahrenheit. For the duration of the tournament, average high temperatures will range from 60 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Banijans have a tendency of being relaxed about time. While, of course, things like flights and matches will run on time, this is something that is observed generally, especially at restaurants. It is considered standard to arrive about 15-20 minutes late for a restaurant reservation, which is something Banijan authorities would like to make note of for travelling fans and visitors to the country for this tournament. This is very true for hangouts with Banijans, dates, weddings, etc... Within the country.

The largest international airports within Banija are South Moravica/Istria International(called SMI International), Jinja City International, and Busukuma International. These serve the country's two largest cities, and the nation's capitol. All teams and dignitaries, upon their arrival to Banija, will fly into Gonzaga International Airport in Busukuma before reaching their final destination. Gonzaga International has long been known as the 'VIP' airport, catering to the royals, high-ranking government officials, and those deemed of special importance by the Government of the day. Most flights will go to one of those three airports before flying to the host city.

In terms of food, Banijans are very heavy meat eaters, and you'll find plenty of chicken, goat meat, beef, pork, and turkey options on your localized menus. In terms of non-meats, popular staple foods are jollof, matoke, Chapati, a rolex, and samosas. Strictly vegan restaurants within the country, outside of Istria and Busukuma, are almost non-existent, though of course you'll find non-meat options everywhere.

Per the latest Census, the national population of Banija is 133 million.

The lack of winter in Banija, of course, has made for challenging conditions for the sport of ice hockey in Banija. While the Banijan Hockey Federation has made great inroads among various Banijan migrant populations in countries that actually have winter, making the sport popular at home has proven to be more of a challenge. The hope is that a World Cup, on home soil, can really launch the sport here at home.

Locations

Of course, as previously explained, Banija does not have a ton of ice hockey history. Ergo, finding rinks has proven difficult, and existing arenas are small. But, after retrofitting some existing basketball arenas, building one brand new ice hockey stadium, and using a variety of college and even prep school arenas, Banija has 6 stadia, up to par, for use here at the World Cup of Hockey. While these venues are certainly on the smaller side, officials emphasize that the venues are all 'intimate' and will be some of the 'best ice you will ever see at the stadium'.

Istria, Moravica
Banija's largest port and largest city by population, this is in the Moravica region, in Northwestern Banija. It is a city of 4,728,000 people, and it is known as Banija's economic capitol. It is largely considered Banija's most diverse city. Historically, this city served as the second capitol city of the Kasanke Tribe, the historical predecessors of the modern Banijan nation. It is one of two Banijan cities with a major foreign population- the other being the nation's capitol, Busukuma. It has risen in status since its designation as an Olympic City, having co-hosted the XIV Summer Olympiad with Orean, Liventia. Nearly a third of the city holds citizenship of a country other than Banijan. More of those come from the Royal Kingdom of Quebec or the Busoga Islands, but people come from all over Atlantian Oceania and the rest of the multiverse. It is also known as Banija's wealthiest city and primary economic hub. It is home to Banija's oldest university, the University of Loyola-Istria, and to the country's biggest airport. It is also home to the Regional Transit Corporation, as well as the Istria Stock Exchange.

South Istria Ice Hockey Center
Capacity of19,700

The stadium used in Istria is the South Istria Ice Hockey Center, the brand new stadium built for this tournament. With a seating capacity of 19,700, this is the largest stadium in use for this tournament, and will host the Final, among other games.

Herzegovina City, Moravica
Banija's oldest city, the city by its current name is over 800 years old, when it was first conquered by the Kasanke people. It is a city with a population of over 2.9 million people. It is the heart of the Puritan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The national religion was started in this city, and the church's world headquarters, the Herzegovina Temple, is the multiverse's largest Puritan Mormon church. The Bishop of this church, formally titled the Patriarch of Herzegovina, is the most senior member of the church, and the joint head of the global church, alongside His Majesty, the Kabaka. It is home to Banija's largest university, Northern Moravica University. It served as the seat of government for the Kasanke Tribe. It is also the capitol city of the Moravica region. As the original home of the predecessors of the Banijan monarchs, all reigning monarchs are buried on the grounds of the Herzegovina Temple.

Herzegovina City had their own airport finally open just prior to World Cup 83. It is not the largest airport, and much traffic is still directed through Istria. Still, it has permanent international status, and is a city looking to continuously place themselves on the map.

Obuo Family Arena
Capacity of 5,500

Obuo Family Arena is the on campus ice hockey arena at Northern Moravica University, with a seating capacity of 5,500. The smaller, intimate venue is a popular one among ice hockey fans in the Kingdom.

Mynda, Aksum
Mynda is the country's 11th largest city, with an urban population of about 1.1 million, and it is the largest city in the Aksum region. It has very few, truly metropolitan expansion in terms of suburbs beyond the city limits, and therefore, does not have a top 10 metropolitan area in terms of population. This being the center of what is otherwise a very rural region, it will provide fans with plenty of chances to experience nature- safaris and nature preserves galore throughout the Aksum Region.

North Star Arena
Capacity of 4,400

North Star Arena is an ice hockey rink in Mynda, Aksum, with a seating capacity of 4,400. This was built with the World Cup of Hockey in mind, although to say it was purpose built for this tournament would be a mistake. It was built in anticipation that Banija would eventually bid to host this tournament, and voila- here it is.

Busukuma, National Capitol Region
This is the nation's capitol, located on the country's Southern coastline. Puritan Mormons believe that their God told the-then chief of the Kasanke, Kabonero III, that he should conquer all of the land that is currently Banija, gave the country it's name(therefore killing the name of the Kasanke nation), and put the capitol in the South. He did it, made Busukuma the capitol, and declared himself Banija's first Maharaja, or Emperor. As the nation's capitol for over 400 years, the city has been the spot for many major events in Banijan history, and the seat of plenty of foreign embassies, a large foreign population, and Banija's first airport.

The city, of course, is known for having two airports- the public, international airport, called Busukuma International, and also the non-public airport, named Gonzaga International Airport- reserved for the royal family and their guests, elected national politicians, foreign diplomats, and the point of entry for high-ranking officials to avoid the general public. Heads of State/Government, Foreign Ministers, AOCAF officials, host committee members, and national teams, upon their first arrival into Banija, will fly into Gonzaga International.

Capitol Park
Capacity of 8,600

Capitol Park has a seating capacity of 8,600, and is a shared public use ice hockey arena. Busukuma AC plan to join the Greater Banijan Hockey League using this arena, and it is a joint venture with the two major capitol city universities- Kizza I College and Loyola-Busukuma, who both will be starting varsity ice hockey programs at their Universities.

Moroba, Ankole
A city nobody has really heard of- just north of what anybody could reasonably call the Busukuma suburbs. Located 55 miles north of Busukuma, this small town of 28,000 quite obviously lacks an airport. But public transit options exist to reach this town- a direct bus route from Busukuma International to Moroba's town center has been added for this tournament, as well as existing commuter train routes reaching Moroba. Why has anybody ever heard of Moroba? It is on the southern edge of the Moroba-Rumoga Safari, an integral part of Banija's famed National Park System. Much of the town is built off of tourism related to that safari, which means that it has many more hotel rooms and other facilities for visitors relative to a city of its size.

But why was it chosen to host the World Cup of Hockey?

Simply put, the city's local Bishop is a big time fan of the sport, having grown up in Siovanija & Teusland, and got the church to invest money to build an ice hockey arena. Mordoba, and the surrounding rural areas, have a vibrant youth hockey scene as a result.

The Southern Tundra
Capacity of 3,800

The Southern Tundra has a seating capacity of 3,800, and will host games for the city in this tournament. It is a stadium that is 10 years old, and the city, which lacks any sort of professional sports teams in any sport, as well as not having a University within city limits, is beyond excited to bring an international sporting tournament to the country's borders for the first time.

Byakado, Bunyoro
The Bunyoro Region is now primarily seen as a basketball region, as basketball is the region's highest rated sport in terms of attendance, youth participation, and TV ratings. And Byakado is no different. The people of Byakado, and the surrounding rural areas, go crazy for Bunyoro A&M hoops- one of the most popular basketball brands in the country. And one of the few true basketball schools in this country. But, the college town, and the surrounding rural area, saw the opportunity to bring a major, international tournament to home soil. So they did exactly that, investing in the campus basketball arena to make it a dual purpose basketball and ice hockey arena.

Obama Fieldhouse
Capacity of 11,202

This is an arena named after Zion Obama, Bunyoro A&M's first ever President. With a seating capacity of 11,202, it is certainly one of the larger stadiums in use. And while it does not have an airport, there are direct trains to Byakado from both Dodoma and Bwubanza, both Bunyoro cities with airports.

With many applying for this job, it ended up taking more time than expected and as a result, an interim manager has been hired for this World Cup, while a permanent manager is to be announced at a later date, expected after this tournament has ended.

On a different note, Darkmania also hosted the 21st Junior World Cup with some... interesting things happening at the tournament. It was also the first sports-tournament to be hosted in Darkmania. Despite there being talks of Darkmania hosting the senior WC, it lacks usable venues.

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], In fact, the men's national team - nicknamed the Ice-a-phants as of 2021 - are one of the best teams in the multiverse, winning four times (29th, 31st, 35th and 43rd), being runners-up in the finals four times (30th, 32nd, 44th and 48th) and getting three bronze medal games (28th, 37th and 46th); although the B-team won a gold medal in the men's ice hockey at the 12th Winter Olympics, they're considered a different team and as a result their achievement is not counted alongside the four WCoH wins. The pointless saga for a new head coach has come to an end thanks to Simón Montenegro leading his team to the final of the last one and being awarded with the job full-time, but was he just a one-off or will he be the new guy to help keep them out of the doldrums?

Home to the Davenport Dockers - the most successful team in the ENIHL (Elejamian National Ice Hockey League) - and the national team. Built in 1992 to replace Dockside Stadium, which was eventually demolished in 1995, Davenport Stadium is the largest ice hockey arena in Elejamie, with a capacity of 18,500. The stadium was originally known as the Davenport Stadium but it also spent a brief spell in the early 2000s as the Rapid Beer Co. Stadium. Eventually, it was renamed the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium just in time for the start of the 2015/16 season, in honour of famed politician and diplomat Declan Madgwick (1927-2015).

For the record: In the northwest of Elejamie, the term "stadium" is used for any building which hosts a professional sports team even if they don't play on a pitch.

Built in 1989, the Coventry City Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena and, with a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins. It's also the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and home to the Coventry Nets basketball team. Following the end of a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller, one that had been ongoing since 2013, they reverted to a variation of their old name while they wait for a new sponsor.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes (but nothing too serious; one person at a time and they can't be out for anything longer than two games. Killing is definitely out)
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Yes (see above)
Assign Penalties to my Players: Yes (but try not to make my players seem dirty, especially since Cerin Meloten and Harrison Blackburn are two of the nicest players on and off the ice and Stacy Saunders is more interested in getting points rather than getting himself into trouble)
Eject my Players: Yes (one ejection per match with a one game suspension and they have to serve their suspension before another player can be ejected)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is (fighting I'm OK with and gave a list of people likely to fight in the "Everything Else" spoiler) but I'd recommend TGing me if you've got any other ideas

  • "Keh-reen Mah-loh-tahn"; "Ah-lah-YEHM Mahn ees-hoh-kee teem".
  • Stacy Saunders is still a guy, if anyone's wondering. So, if you do mention him in your RP, make sure you say "he", "him" and "his" instead of "she" and "her".
  • In the event that any of my players interest you and you want to sign them, please tell me which one you want, which club wants them and all the details.
  • Please get back to me with RP info by 8pm BST. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and put my own stuff in.
  • My main enforcers are Lupe, Carlos Sierra, Ethan Swinburne, Mike Keller and Bill Judge (who was Elejamie's main enforcer during WJHC8). The only players that don't fight are Stacy Saunders, Cerin Meloten and Harrison Blackburn. Everyone else can fight, just not as often as those first guys I've mentioned.
  • Elejamie will wear their alt kit on MD1 and either the quarter-final or the semi-final if they're not the home side for the QF.
  • Although "Carpio" appears on his jersey, Kiko Carpio is usually on a full name basis when he's being commentated on. I won't complain if you just call him "Carpio", though.
  • Danilo and Felipe Barajas are twin brothers, with Danilo being the oldest by about five minutes.
  • As he will be retiring from international ice hockey at the end of the tournament, there will be a few games where Lupe won't be on the first defensive pairing. More often than not Diego Pinto will be on the first line, so if you see him assisting a goal alongside Adam Keane that's not a mistake that's how the team sheet was presented.
  • Ideally there should be an acute mark over Simón because Hispano-Elejamian but I'm not too bothered if you miss it out in your RP.

Goalies
G Bertus Bitterboom (22) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters
G Arame Augoven (23) - Arboren Vortex
G Per Janszoon (29) - Launott Polar Bears
G Wugeld Zudalu (27) - West Coast Blizzards

Bitterboom is the real deal. The golden boy. The prodigy. Janszoon might have definitely lost his starting spot to the Hunters' number one. Zudalu need not apply - after storming onto the scene, his time with the Blizzards has shown that he's good, but not per se great, though his experience is definitely wanted. Janszoon remains the most important commodity with his experience, but Bitterboom is the one starting from here on out. Finally, stability? Augoven is a more talented version of Janszoon and Zudalu, but without the years of experience that Bitterboom (one year his junior) has.

Defencemen
Line 1
LD Vilokatsu Akinaga (26) - Arboren Vortex
RD Aennirin Ehoni (32) - South Aevanna Storm

Line 2
LD Aedeti Aenec (28) - Noordrug Bi-state
RD Aomo Eadalin (20) - Serevne Northerners

Line 3
LD Aenoi Alrella (25) - Serevne Northerners
RD Riquard Winterhaag (27) - Launott Polar Bears

Substitute
RD Ushku (f) Shadongudhen (25) - Aevanna Scouts
RD Gerhild (f) Casselaer (24) - Straudum Ice
LD Audupu Aunopial (21) - Aevanna Scouts
LD Evsa (f) Aehiv (31) - Aevanna Plains Wanderers

The Aenec-Ehoni pairing has made place for Akinaga-Ehoni. Akinaga had been knocking on the door for a while, and Kuang thought it time to make the change to his marquee pair. Aenec is now on line two with a very young Eadalin - perhaps pushing him to a big role a bit too early, and somehow avoiding the obvious Alrella-Eadalin all-Serevne pair. Winterhaag is still the utility line three guy, with Shadongudhen and Casselaer waiting in the wings. Aunopial is on his first WCOH, while Aehiv is back after a long absence, as she was never quite sure of selection given form and age of the players sharing her position. Beyond Akinaga and Ehoni - and Aenec - the level of play is quite similar and Kuang might change some pairings around as we go. As noted, Alrella-Eadalin is an obvious one, and Shadongudhen-Aunopial is a young, but well adjusted pair as they're all on that Scouts team that way, way overperformed last season.

Forwards
Line 1
LW Moen de Zwaluw (25) - Launott Polar Bears
C Aoere Aegomenna (21) - Arboren Vortex
RW Aerine Aorifi (35) - South Aevanna Storm

Line 2
LW Aohise (f) Aemenenna (22) - Aevanna Scouts
C Tiele van April (22) - Straudum Ice
RW Detger Veldappel (21) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters

Line 3
LW Enoni (f) Aolubi (30) - Egevea Islanders
C Birtle Montrose (23) - Aevanna Scouts
RW Aenime Aivobelin (23) - Aevanna Plains Wanderers

Line 4
LW Augane Evos (27) - South Aevanna Storm
C Mathias Loenaren (27) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters
RW Woutre Heerekornuit (29) - Straudum Ice

Substitute
LW Eltu (f) Aivubelin (28) - Serevne Northerners
C Aiaa Aolunelin (22) - Serevne Northerners
RW Aenva Avdu (27) - Aevanna Scouts
RW Arinia Aolopei (29) - Serevne Northerners

It's been said: there's an explosion of offensive talent and they're all in their early 20s now. Most of these have been on the roster before as teenagers, but the generation is coming into their prime now. The first line is exquisite with immense talent, Aegomenna the absolute pinnacle of attacking ice hockey on the archipelago, supported by De Zwaluw, used to operating almost alone on the Polar Bears and Aorifi who's on a light Storm team. All three are used to rely on their own creativity and not wait for their team too much, so despite incredible talent there's a risk of them not looking for teammates on plays. Line two has players from really good teams, used to playing together a bit too much, if that - but all are in their early 20s, explosive yet slightly unreliable. Line three has more experience, with players that aren't used to be the focal point of their teams, so Aolubi (new), Montrose (keeps threatening to breakout as a league-wide top 3 player but never does), and Aivobelin (on a Wanderers team that kind of imploded) all have a chip on their shoulder and here to prove something. Line four has all the stability you want. Late 20s, solid, mid-table teams, win a lot but not losing their head over a loss. The subs include mostly players of the latter caliber, plug-and-play in any line.

Look out for the potential all-Serevne lineup, both in defence and as forwards.

Powerplay
Akinaga-Winterhaag-De Zwaluw-Van April-Heerekornuit. All Intermarean and Sudaefjoller players, able to lay siege on a shorthanded team. Patient yet efficient and pushing forward.

Penalty Kill
Ehoni-Aenec-Aorifi-Aolubi. Conservative, experienced players who won't get baited out of position.

The Ko-orenite league cracked down on fighting to speed games up. Don't be surprised if the Dragonflies don't respond to a call to arms. Ice hockey is a regional (but not necessarily small) sport in Ko-oren, limited to frigid Aerellen, the temperate (but cold) northeast, and parts of the unwelcoming west coast. Venues are limited, and Aerellen's largest venue hosts multiple games per day while the season is on, so speeding up games and keeping them plannable is key. Languages used by the team are Dutch and Aerellen (Ko-orenite). Aerellen names are easily recognisable, they start with vowels, featuring many Au, Ao, Ai, Ae combinations at the start of each word. Tarrashall is also a culture that you'll run into, famous players from there include Hallady Buck and Yaller Nyan, and they often play for the West Coast Blizzards.

The league has made the move from amateurism/semi-professionalism to fully professional over the last year. To get there, some teams were moved, some merged, others folded while new teams (in different locations) sprang up to fill the void. This has left part of the fanbase bitter and resentful: their team might have moved, a 80+ year old rivalry might have disappeared, etc. The rest of the fanbase has been very welcoming: more of Ko-oren can enjoy the fastest team sport in the multiverse. Still, the league didn't exactly expand beyond its usual borders (Aerellen, the northeast, and the north coast). There's also the matter of Banija's team in Schemerdrecht: while opening up the city to ice hockey, it has taken away expansion opportunities.

Being born in the Fire Nation doesn’t exactly exude a future storied career in a sport played on ice. Yet in the small village of Kajinazumi, a household name would be born in the Kuang family; in their middle child Deniigi. Playing youth hockey all the way through the system before getting a full-ride scholarship to Republic City State University, where under one of the best hockey programs in the Republics Kuang would find himself making the Reserve Roster for the Gyatso-kai National Ice Hockey team at the age of 19 for the Seventeenth Edition of the World Cup of Hockey. He would make nine appearances on the reserves, often times subbing in for an aging Ito Pakku. His transition to starter after the retirement of Ito, as well as his continued development, led to an integral part in the first World Cup of Hockey victory for the Ice Bisons.

Following his retirement, Kuang has accepted a position at his alma mater, as an assistant coach for the RCSU men’s team. He has been entertaining coaching positions for a few AHL and RHL teams, and even an Arendallic team. His defensive style of coaching, though, might be just the perfect fit for the Dragonflies of Ko-oren, who have always been a far more defensively minded team than most others on the multi-verse stage.

International sporting success has come rather belatedly, and suddenly, to Peter Zakharov, a patient, good-humoured and almost fatherly figure who resembles a popular, rarely seen uncle at a family reunion more than he does an elite sportsman. Born on the southern island of New Hibernia to parents of Soviet descent who migrated to the Plough Islands as part of the Vital Skills Programme of the 1970s, Zakharov followed his father into engineering and has been a safety inspector at the Crabble II nuclear power station for over twenty years. Always a keen sportsman, he played both cricket and ice hockey in his youth before drifting towards the latter, playing once or twice a week at the Peaceful Atomic Energy Association, where he played in goal because it left him less tired and with more time to socialise at the end of a game.

Then came the inaugural Anaian Ice Hockey Championships, where despite his greying temples, Zakharov's old friend Paul Campbell included him in the nine-player Plough Islands team he had decided to assemble for the event, as much for his organisational skills as for his ability in the goal crease. To the surprise of everybody - not least themselves - the Plough Islanders stumbled their way to the title in Koroa City, and managed to repeat the achievement several months later at the second edition in Ko-oren. Zakharov has typically spent most of the events organising practices, liaising with federation officials, and generally shepherding the small group of Plough Islanders around as a de facto team manager, but he nevertheless played seven games across both tournaments and, save for a scrappy 5-3 win over Huayramarca in Arboren, has been a resolute and dependable presence at the back of the rink.

When Ko-orenite ice hockey supremo Erji Tehauden approached the Ice Sport Union of the Plough Islands - or rather Campbell, its only real representative - about recruiting a Plough Islander to bolster her own team's coaching staff ahead of the World Cup of Hockey, the initial reaction was befuddled disbelief. It was quickly realised, though, that ice hockey in the country could only benefit from sending someone on a barely undercover fact-finding trip to the premier tournament in the multiverse, and Zakharov readily volunteered for the task. After a few phone calls to Sutton and to Crabble, a leave of absence from the nuclear plant was arranged, and Zakharov stayed behind on the Halcyon Archipelago to share what little he knows with the Dragonflies and observe, at close quarters, how ice hockey is organised and played beyond the Celestial Ocean.

If there's one thing an observer of Sarzonian hockey will notice, it's that the team donning the navy blue and silver sweaters is a completely different cast of characters from recent editions.

No one, not a single person who was part of previous Sarzonian ice hockey teams is competing in the upcoming 49th edition of the World Cup of Hockey.

Thomas Brown is making his debut as an international manager after toiling for 11 years managing minor league hockey clubs in Sarzonia. Prior to that, he served for two seasons as an assistant bench boss across the former Delaclav border. Brown said isn't deterred by the challenge.

"New team, fresh ideas, completely clean slate," he said. "We've had some difficult times recently, but we have faith in ourselves that we're going to start the road back right here."

Even so, the Incorporated Hockey Players' Union lockout has resulted in the players in the Incorporated Ice Hockey League being prevented from serving on the national team. Thus, there's no Brett Tanguay, Jr. or Alyssa Hannigan on this team. It's going to be all minor leaguers, as none of the players on the Sarzonia squad have logged a single shift above the Incorporated Hockey Association, the top minor league in Sarzonia.

"A lot of us have never played together before," defenceman Dan Wilson said of his teammates. In fact, I didn't even know [defence partner Joshua Smith] until we got to the practice facility."

Besides the natural intrigue that comes with players who never played together taking part in training, the question was which goaltender would win the starting job between Jack Michel and Matt Lambert. Michel, a 6-foot-3 goalie with a butterfly style, ended up getting the nod over the younger Lambert, who plays with a standup style. Brown said Lambert was better as a puckhandler, but he thought Michel's slight advantage in experience would cancel out the perceived disadvantages in pure ability compared to Lambert.

"Jack's played a few more matches," Brown said. "He's seen stuff. It'd be nice to have a Jake Parsons or an Owen Franks, but we're gonna have to roll with who we got."

As for the absence of Tanguay or Hannigan, Brown admitted that would be much tougher to overcome.

"Brett is a generational talent," he said. "Alyssa is great at what she does. I was shocked she wasn't a first line centre. But since we don't have any of those folks, we're going to have to make do with who we do have."

As for possible star players, Lex Martinez led all Stars players in goals with 40 in the 78-match season in the IHA last year and Bill Jackson's slapshot from the point during power plays led his team to the No. 1 power play in the league. But at least in the early going, Brown said he planned to play all his lads and determine who he trusts most in late-match situations.

"We have a lot of variables, a lot of unknowns with this team," he said. "That includes me."

The World Cup of Hockey - it's hard to say if there's a tournament that we have a more love-hate-relationship with. The Ko-orenites have largely been solid, moving among the top 10 or so teams for most of the current era - that's Cups 37 and onwards - but the way in which we've been eliminated time after time have been heart-wrenching. Every single time, there was a barrage of excuses, analysis of the final game that did us in, reconsiderations of players, coaches, entire development systems, and so on. Every single time, there was a different reason: we're lacking the money to keep up with the big teams, there aren't enough people in ice hockey, the coaches don't have a clear idea or direction to take the team in.

And even when those elements were present, we've run into the same wall, the same shredder that made short work of our hopes and dreams for that Cup.

It's not like we entered these tournaments with the intent of losing, of course. In fact, the Dragonflies have been elite in the group stage - let's not dwell on the 48th edition too long, but before then there was the 7-game group stage ending in seven victories. A perfect four wins in the Cup before that. That's two Cups with no group stage losses - and in the cycle before that the only group stage loss we ran into was in overtime. Cup 43: 11 wins, no draws, no losses, no overtime. Cup 42: 11 wins, 1 loss. Excellent group stage after excellent group stage. And yet, the Dragonflies lost their footing on the ranking cycle after cycle as well, through the absence of good results in the knockouts. We can turn all of the top tier teams into our peers when we're playing for points and goal difference, but they turn us into vulnerable flying insects - Dragonflies, if you will - as soon as we're playing a one-off in a straight knockout.

In this era, we've been eliminated by some truly awesome teams - no complaints there.

Eliminated by whom, what did they end up doing, and when did we meet?
37: Neu Engollon, 1st, Round of 16
38: Neu Engollon, 1st, Quarterfinal
39: Banija, QF, Round of 16
40: Savojarna, 4th, Quarterfinal
41: Siovanija and Teusland, 1st, Final
42: Gyatso-Kai, QF, Round of 16
43: Savojarna, QF, Round of 16
44: Elejamie, 2nd, Quarterfinal
45: Mercedini, 3rd, Quarterfinal
46: Cordian Isles, 1st, Quarterfinal
47: Medzhumoramia, Round of 16, Round of 32
48: Huron League, QF, Round of 16

In 12 tournaments, we've been knocked out by:
- the winner 4 times (33%)
- a finalist 5 times (42%)
- a semifinalist 7 times (58%)

- Neu Engollon 2 times (17%)
- Savojarna 2 times (17%)

And honestly, you won't find many people complain about those. Steel sharpens steel, as they say, and we've been the near-equals of some generation-defining powers. We made our only final in the third of three straight Siovanija and Teusland title wins - of course you're going into that game knowing that a loss is a very real possibility. Neu Engollon and Savojarna are extremely stable, long-term programmes. And some of the names appearing once in that list - Banija, Gyatso-Kai, Elejamie, Mercedini, and the Cordian Isles - it's hard to downplay any of their performances.

So what's up with these excuses? Well, for most of that stretch, the league was trying to find money to professionalise, or clubs and owners were waging war against the association during that process. Ko-orenite ice hockey absolutely got out of that situation in a much, much better place, but it must have been a sizeable distraction for a part of the roster. It's hard to say whether it had a hand in any of our losses (probably not) but at least they were plausible excuses.

After all that, we were sitting on 12 strong clubs - including an HCL-winner finally dethroning the Vilita-Valanora duopoly there - with owners who are putting the future of the league first. That has led to an explosion in talent coming through, which would be all the players in the 20-25 age range currently running our roster, and after that Cordian Isles loss, a new golden age for Ko-orenite ice hockey would start, right?

World Cup of Hockey 47. Seven wins to zero draws or losses in the group stage. Ranked 5th in the world. Power rankings had elevated us a tad above that, to the 4th or even 3rd place range, with the quarterfinals or even semifinals in our grasp. Our first hurdle? Medzhumoramia - a team with zero details, zero names, no tournament history prior to 47 (and no future after 47). Coming off of seven straight wins, that's not a hurdle - it's barely a speed bump. That's a glorified friendly. And yet... after 60 minutes, the scoreboard read 1-1. Still, with the skill gap, nay, skill canyon, overtime and a hypothetical shootout was nothing. Miss, goal, goal, goal, miss... and the Dragonflies were knocked out by the least likely team. In the round of 32. Painful.

We thought we were a pretty good team at the time, so we were ready for ridicule. Getting clowned on on twii.tur (or, pending a million-billionnaire takeover, '[bird emoji].tur') for the entire time between Cups. Getting @-ed by Savojarnan teenagers every 45 minutes or so.

What we got was worse. Pity. Was it ultimately looking down on us... not really. Maybe it was just that every team realised that could have been them. The next cycle, going seven wins (nine including overtime wins) and three losses in the group stage, the Dragonflies, now with more experience under their belt, and all of those teenagers entering their early 20s, and having played together for three to four years, and hell-bent on preventing another embarrassment like that, were ready to take on Huron League. A team that had appeared in edition 47, but sat out 46. Egg on our face again. We were still the favourites going into that game, but with 0-0 after 60 minutes, our defensive playstyle had betrayed us again - and we lost 1-0 in overtime.

Kuang was hired to add his expertise and make sure this kind of circussery wouldn't happen again. Now, with a group of stars straight from our professional league - and this generation of players has never played in the era before that, and their strength and conditioning shows that, being leaps and bounds ahead of the old guard - and two embarrassing losses to end our title aspirations, and having fallen back all the way to 13th on the ranking, this is it. Time to prove how elite we are in group stages, and time to take revenge on the endless list of quarterfinal-or-earlier exits. This team is livid. Angry. Fucking pissed.

Notes: Grover Perr is to the Zenician National Hockey Team that Geraldo Zys is to the Zenician National Futbol Team: the leader chosen to resurrect one of the Empire’s top national teams. Grover Perr has a bit of an uphill battle to fight as he was considered for two reasons: being a 5 time Collegiate Hockey champion in Zenic and being a college friend of the Deputy Minister of Sports, Heung Soo-min.

Perr grew up watching the national team during his childhood before all sport and most leisure was suspended for the safety of the citizens throughout the conflict with ZSF (Zenic Sans Frontiers). Thus, he has elected to play a similar style to the teams of old but with a tad bit more aggression (comparatively). He did coordinate with Minister of Sport Alaia Dimi (as did Futbol manager Zys) to select a younger team for the World Cup of Hockey in order to find a strong group of young talent that could inspire future generations in an attempt to rebuild Zenic into a top tier Hockey nation once more.

A Look at Canadian Dominion Hockey

Canadian Dominion hasn’t had a long history when it comes to sports, but since it’s first entrance into the 45th World Cup of Hockey, it would seem Canadian Dominion would slowly be referred to as a "hockey country,” and it would seem as if Canadian Dominion is slowly looking to have a breakout year as they have been restricted to the Round of 16 as they have been sent home multiple times, but when talking to players, it seems as if Canadian Dominion is ready and has players ready to make that push after a terrible year finishing 6th in the group. Although we will say that since its first entrance into the World Cup of Hockey, Canadian Dominion has consistently demonstrated its prowess on the ice, Despite facing strong competition from other renowned hockey nations, such as Gyatso-Kai, The Canadian Dominion has remained competitive and has even taken them to thrilling shoot-outs. While there may be times when Canadian Dominion falls short in certain matchups or encounters challenging opponents, it is important to note that their performance remains impressive and they continue to hold their own against some of the strongest hockey nations in the world. Additionally, it is worth considering that the nature of hockey allows for unexpected outcomes and surprises.

"If we have to play Gyatso-Kai one more time, we are forfeiting the match."

Simón Montenegro was semi-serious when he said that but you couldn't blame him for being a bit unhappy after that game. After all, he had to deal with a group stage where his defence had plenty of hits but a small handful of misses. Fortunately, they finally managed to gel in time for the elimination stage, where they were able to let in a handful of goals while scoring a bit more. Nothing you wouldn't expect from a well-oiled machine such as his. And then the defence decided to suck harder than a reference I am not allowed to finish. How bad was it? 7-6. And they had let in the 7. Worst of all, it was in the final of the World Cup of Hockey, which made it a very real "this is the one thing we didn't want to happen" moment.

So why did Simón have to make sure that he wasn't entirely being serious? Part of it was because if he had been completely serious, it would've been seen as a sore loser moment and would've resulted in him being passed over for the managerial job despite the immensely successful run he had, if not blacklist him from potential future jobs. And part of it was because he actually wanted to finally beat Gyatso-Kai at some point, not as one game in a series but overall. A series win, a single elimination win, whatever it was it had to be done. Not by any means necessary, as if his team had cheated or played dirty to get their win then it wouldn't be as rewarding, but he was willing to do a drastic thing or two if it meant coming out on top for once. He still congratulated the Ice Bisons on their fourth trophy, as you would expect, but he either wanted the script to be flipped in his favour or to finally deal with a different opponent in the big game.

Sometime after the last World Cup of Hockey, and shortly after the JWHC had come to a close, his side played a pre-tournament friendly against the Canadian Dominion. A team that, in the last competition, finished 6th in their group with a 6-6-0-0 even suffered a 5-4 defeat to the Ice-a-phants on match day 10. Before that, they finished fourth in the group with a 3-4-0-0 record before getting absolutely stomped 8-1 by Græntfjall in the Round of 32. Before THAT, they finished second in their group and put in a decent showing against Gyatso-Kai, drawing 4-4 after 60 and keeping a clean sheet in OT before losing 2-0 in the shut-out. And before THAT, in their debut, they went on to finish 1-2-0-2 and fourth overall in their group. Taking on a team with four golds, four silvers and three bronzes in their history. On paper it seemed like another close victory for Elejamie. Nope, CD managed to get a 2-1 win. While it was a friendly and, overall, had little impact on the overall standings it did make Simón very nervous about the upcoming World Cup of Hockey.

It didn't help that his main core was aging. Out of the 26-man squad, 15 of them were at least 30 years old. That was a little over half the team. Four of them were at least 33 years old, with the oldest being Lupe who was now 35 years old. There was only one starting defenceman under the age of 30 in Diego Pinto, and even then he was only 28 years of age. It wasn't that much better for scratched right defenceman Paul Sinclair, who was 29. The entire third line consisted of a 34 year old Ethan Swinburne (who had opted to spend his twilight years in the APHL with the Penhurst Earls) and the 31 year old Barajas brothers, Danilo and Felipe. The top two lines weren't that much better with left-winger and captain Stacy Saunders on the first line and centre Rafael Espinosa on the second line being the only ones under 30. Naturally, it would be time to start considering cutting some of the old guard and bringing in some young blood. It'd be a real shame, especially since some of the players that would be going were among all-time greats, but fortunately he wasn't going to be drastic about it. Instead, he had a much better idea.

After he had selected his team, the same damn team from last time, he issued a press conference. After stating that his side will take a slightly more defensive approach, much like what Michael Madgwick did when he briefly ran the team during their WCoH46 campaign, he also announced that for the golden edition of the World Cup of Hockey he will possibly gut half the team regardless of the result. The players who were 30 years old might be lucky enough to keep their job, as would Lucas Madgwick who had shown last season that he still had plenty of gas in the tank. Mike Keller would be safe as he had spent a good amount of his WCoH stint as a scratch and it'd be unfair to unceremoniously boot him from the team when he didn't really get a huge amount of ice time. And Lupe was yet another exception albeit in a different way; he was retiring from international ice hockey at the end of the tournament and from the sport full stop at the end of the season, so how he plays wouldn't really affect whether or not he'll be guaranteed a spot in WCoH50. Everyone else, though, will probably not receive any further caps. Simón then added that he didn't want to be all "ganar o morir" about it but rather that he thinks that some youth in key positions might be what it takes to grant them their fifth (or best case scenario sixth) title. He also added that the only reason why he didn't want to make those changes now was because he would like it if the more senior players would put on a good show for what might be their final tournament. Who knows, it could possibly save them from being cut.

He wasn't the only one to have made such a decision, even though he wasn't trying to hop on any bandwagon. Sarzonia decided to go full tabula rasa, with their line-up having a grand total of zero returnees. Brett Tanguay Jr., Owen Franks, Jake Parsons, Alyssa Hannigan, all of them were completely absent from the Stars' line-up and will only exist in the stands, whether it be because they made the journey and bought tickets or because of fans donning replica jerseys of the aforementioned players. Ko-oren also decided to include some youth and fresh blood into their line-up as well as mix up a few lines, if only to try and get themselves out of the doldrums and instead turn into actual competitors rather than a team heading for a Legacy of Failure video courtesy of whatever your universe's iteration of UrinatingTree is called. The only difference was that those two teams were doing it right away, whereas Simón was giving his players one last hurrah before making sweeping changes. That, and Sarzonia's got an all-new team due to their big league having to deal with a lockout. However, if those gambles for those two teams pay off then it'd be all the more reason for sweeping changes.

With that now out of the way, it's now time to talk about the tournament. And where would it be held? Surprisingly enough, Banija. A nation that, on the surface, didn't seem like it'd be much of an ice hockey locale. After all, it was in a place more tropic and humid than Elejamie and the ice hockey culture probably isn't as strong either. At least the team is relatively solid, to the point where they made the World Cup of Hockey final fairly recently, at WCoH47 to be precise. Sure they got shut out 2-0 and it was a tournament that was chock full of shock wins and all that, but it was still quite an achievement nonetheless. Too bad they couldn't capitalise on it for the next one and proceeded to finish fourth in their group before going on to lose 2-1 to the Ice-a-phants in the Round of 16. Still, you have to give credit where credit is due.

Speaking of Elejamie, what group were they in? They were in Group 4, alongside three other teams. Better yet, two of them were teams that Elejamie had played in the past so it was just a matter of remembering what they did right against them and using that to their advantage. Besides, if they messed up the first go around then they could have a second go later on because it was a round robin. Anyway, their first and fourth opponents are the Equestrian States. A team that was hot shit back in the day, having hosted two World Cups of Hockey and finishing third in another. However, they have been absent for so long that they completely fell off the rankings and had to crawl their way back up to the top. And also they were one of Elejamie's many opponents during their WCoH29-winning run, where they suffered a 5-0 loss and ended up finishing third in the group.

Then there was their second and fifth opponents, Aust Scor. AKA the only team in their group the Ice-a-phant have yet to play. They made their debut at the last tournament where they didn't do super well. A 2-7-1-2 record that saw them finish tenth out of twelve. They got an opening win against Eksartonia, 2-1, which was probably a massive boon for them. Unfortunately, Darkmania crashed the party with a 1-0 win. Then they suffered defeats to Lacfroid (6-4), Sannyamathland (2-1 after OT), Kelssek (5-2), the long-named Saint-Jean-Jacques-Sur-Mer (2-1 in the shoot-out after a 2-2 draw) and Kimi-Suomi (3-1) before a 2-1 shoot-out win after a goalless draw with the Quintessence of Dust snapped their six-game losing streak. Unfortunately, their next three games were absolute humiliations. They were shut-out 5-0 by the Snow and Ice Caps to go into their bye day, they were stomped 10-5 by Huayramanca on their game back and eventual winners Gyatso-Kai grabbed an easy 6-1 win against them. At least things came full-circle with their other regulation-time victory, this time 7-5 over Abanhfleft (another team whose days seem to have long passed). So, naturally, they're hoping that things will go a lot smoother even though there are fewer teams for them to play.

And, finally, their final opponents in both legs will be Cassadaigua. A team that needs no introduction, as the Ice-a-phants had played them in the last WCoH, all the way back in the group stage. Team Cassadaigua may had grabbed a 4-3 win, but Elejamie had the last laugh as they made it out of the group stage whereas TC finished 5th with a 7-3-2 record; while they tied with Ko-oren, the Butterflies made it through as they had a better point differential, +16 vs. +7. Simón could've sworn that the Ice-a-phants had played them before then but he was having difficulty remembering. Either way, they were bound to be the biggest thorn in his team's side so he was hoping to get at least one win over them. Failing that a draw or two would suffice, since that was being included now presumably to make things a bit easier.

Was there anything else worth mentioning? Yes. As there are 44 teams taking part, there'll be eleven groups of four. Presumably because it'd be easier to work with rather than four groups of eleven. As a result, the elimination stage will work a bit differently. The top eight group stage winners will go through to the Round of 16 as expected. However three, along with all the second placers and two best third placers, will have to compete in the Round of 24. Naturally, Simón wanted his side to finish amongst those top eight. After all, it'd mean his boys would be rested and relaxed for the next opponent. However, he wasn't exactly uncomfortable with having to compete in the Ro24, as there was a slim possibility that if his team wins their game their next opponent might've slacked off rather than get some training done. Plus the match itself could work as an extended training session especially if he has some new tactics he wanted to try out.

Ultimately, there wasn't much else to talk about. The other teams in the other groups weren't anything he should be concerned about, as they weren't his business after all. Not to mention this RP is long enough without me having to talk about each of them in some degree of detail. All he was concerned about was getting a good result from each game and making sure his team played to the best of their abilities. No matter their age or anything like that, they all had a part to play and it was their job to play their part well. Also, since he was now properly in charge he could finally start doing things his way. Rather than carry on with his predecessor's analytical approach where he studied each team to try and take advantage of their weak point, he might carry on with this whole defensive approach and make it a permanent fixture in the team. If it worked of course. But he was getting a bit ahead of himself here. All he wanted to do was to get a teamsheet ready, get a game plan ready and just get everything sorted for their opening game.

And maybe find someone who's up for a chess game, even if it's online.

Skepticism as Edenocambrian roster announced for 49th World Cup of Hockey
Multiple newcomers brought in following rash of injuries and several retirements

POMPEY, CAMBERSEY — As the Mist Knights prepare for a third appearance at the World Cup of Hockey, the Edenocambrian Hockey Federation has released a controversial thirty-man roster after much anticipation. The announcement was made just days after a heated season of the Commonwealth Home League culminated in Lotus' triumph over Pompey in the grand final at the end of an epic seven-game showdown. With a record number of hits and penalties, injuries will force erstwhile mainstays on the Mist Knights' roster to sit out the 49th edition of the World Cup as head coach Lionel Cress looks to improve on back-to-back round of 16 exits despite key losses.

Eden and Cambersey will be without the goaltending tandem that anchored them throughout their infamous giant-killing campaigns in the 47th and 48th World Cups, with Anthony Everett having announced his retirement at the end of the 48th World Cup and Derek Barber ruled out due to a persistent hamstring injury. In their place, Holyrood's Owen Lambert becomes Eden and Cambersey's number-one while Justin Hyland serves as backup. The Mist Knights' blueline has stayed mostly intact, although Moses Byfield's absence in retirement will surely be felt. Cress bumps Miles Dryden to the first pairing alongside Archie Frost to replace Byfield, while an 18 year-old Matthew Holmes takes advantage of a mass of injuries incurred by defensemen across the CHL to make a surprise appearance on the roster sheet at the end of his rookie year in professional hockey. Leo Castledine, Lucas Rowland, and Max Sheringham all return.

The Mist Knights' offense, however, has generated by far the most conversation and debate amongst fans and pundits, as it sees the most change out of any department. Though the returns of captain Adrian Rosewarne and number-one center Tristan Halley alone will be enough to ensure the team will remain competitive, they will be without Francis Brekespear for the first time ever as he becomes the most notable Edenocamberite to hang up his skates. Brekespear's decision to retire breaks up the dominant Edenocambrian top line that pioneered the nation's meteoric rise in the hockey world. Jude Scarlett and Julian MacQueen will also not feature in this edition of the World Cup after they were unfortunate enough to have injured each other in an on-ice collision in a regular season game between Sherringford and Castlegar, meaning Sherringford will have no representatives on the Mist Knights' roster for the first time ever.

Cress, therefore, was faced with the headache of having to find four national team-calibre right wingers with Brekespear, Scarlett, and MacQueen all out of the picture. Tetusya Kon, who played on the second line last World Cup, will be taking Brekespear's spot on the top line alongside Rosewarne and Halley (this despite Kon being a left winger by trade) — a daunting proposition for the 23 year old, who will have to fill in for one of the best Mist Knights ever — while playing on his off wing. The Begbie twins return for their third World Cup berth, but on the third line instead of the second — whisper it quietly, but at 36, they simply do not have enough gas in the tank to assume their usual top-six roles and this will more than likely be their final hurrah. Wisely perhaps, Cress opts to bring a yet-unproven Damian Oddy-Black into the fold for his first World Cup, reuniting him on a line with the Begbies, with whom he won the CHL Grand Final last week.

Deadly Ledley Sinclair gets a hard-earned promotion to the now-vacated second line, as a freshly twenty Riley Coulthard joins him, probably in hopes of accelerating his development. Due to the aforementioned dearth of available right wingers, Damian Lindsay becomes the only member on the line with no previous World Cup experience. Returning wonderkids Cody Berenger and Darcy Bysshe (formerly Beckett) return to the team on the fourth line, supported by grizzled veteran Oliver Faulkes, a newcomer to the team and a notorious enforcer for Castlegar at the club level. Eden and Cambersey will open their campaign at home against the Canadian Dominion on Wednesday. The two sides were also groupmates last edition, with Eden and Cambersey having won the two sides' only matchup 6—4.

Kelssek has a physical and aggressive style of play, with a tendency to forecheck aggressively. Its hockey culture also puts inordinate emphasis on board play; losing board battles implies shame, weakness, cowardice, hormonal inadequacies, etc. There is also a cultural divide between whether players should adopt complex offensive tactics or dump-and-chase. Duncan prefers the former, but older players especially are more comfortable with the latter.

IT'S FINALLY BACK! After 6 years away, International Hockey finally returns to New Washington and The Rink in The Gardens! You'd think that The Gardens of New Washington would demand a bigger venue for their ice hockey arena, but they wanted to pay tribute to the Secretary-General here. His hometown in U1 has a small rink of similar capacity, so developers decided to build The Rink to have a similar feel. While it may be small, the fans make it sound like there are a lot more people in there - NAU ice hockey fans are known for being loud and boisterous when required.

Alone in a mostly dark office lit only by the smallest of desk lamps and the few stars that you could see from the base of the mountain range just south of San Valerie, Grover Per sat at his desk. For the past two hours, Coach Per watched, rewinded and then rewatched any footage from the 47th World Cup of Hockey that he could find of Zenic’s fellow Group 10 participants in the 48th edition of this tournament: Patriotlandia, HUElavia, and Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove.

He watched the Mountaineer’s Quarterfinal finish to eventual third place Gyatso-Kai. Per studied their slightly aggressive but mostly balanced style and took notes of how they managed to not incur an unnecessary amount of penalty minutes. He watched long time participant HUElavia come one goal, one result short of making it to the knockout stages and noticed that head to head results could matter more than goal differential so he might want to emphasize simply WINNING than winning big. Per also found any footage possible of the highly aggressive Tapirs. This group was a mixed bag of styles and experience that Grover and Anat would have to find a way to flow in between if they wanted even the slightest of chances of a surprise trip to the knockout rounds so early in the Empire’s return to the rink.

First challenge up: HUElavia coming to North Zenic to start off The Artic Survivors’ first game in several decades. HUElavia was a hard team to crack. They always seemed to be in contention for making a good run in the knockout stages during each edition but you could never really tell if they would do just that or come up one result short and be eliminated on the final matchday. He wasn’t sure if he should have the team play more aggressively or play the strategy they had been practicing.

Grover looked down to the clock on his desk and noticed that time: 02:47. He shut off the television before picking up his personal bag and heading out the door. Acknowledging that there was still a day before the first match of the tournament for his nation, he could afford to go home and sleep in his own bed for a good night's sleep. That should allow him to look over everything once more and make a final decision before skating the Empire back into the World Cup of Hockey.
