Although Gaullica started well, the two sides were evenly split in this first knockout game of the tournament. Gaullica scored the game's only try in the 33rd minute, and it finally looked like the momentum had shifted definitively in their favour. However, as Gaullica edged closer to the Satavian try line for a second time in just two minutes, Émilienne Héroux clearing out of a ruck drew the attention of the referee and TMO; she had come flying in at speed and cleared out illegally, shoulder leading into the head of Satavia's Tahlia Hughes. Héroux saw red, and Hughes saw the inside of an ambulance as she was taken to hospital for "precautionary checks". Afterwards, momentum shifted firmly in Satavia's favour. Gaullica went down to 13 players at one point after Deshaies saw yellow for a shoulder charge. In the opinion of Satavian commentator, James Calick (who was clearly angered by the incident), Deshaies was lucky to only receive a yellow after she had "committed a murder right in front of the ref". Nonetheless, Gaullica's defence kept out Satavia for the remainder of the match as Satavia instead banked points with penalty kicks courtesy of Hazel Woods, ultimately winning the match 12-8. They will play Estmere in the semi-finals, whilst Gaullica will not participate any further in this competition.

Estmere and Caldia battled it out in the second quarter-final of the day. The winner was to face Satavia in the semis, with an eye to progressing through to the final. The match saw Woods strike first with an excellent team try off the set-piece, followed by an equalising try from Caldia before half-time. Neither side converted, and the score sat 5-5 at Half Time. In the second half, however, Estmere once again proved why they are the number 1 team in the world rankings, pulling away from Caldia with an early try from the always-excellent Wade, and again from Williams in the 64th minute. With just ten seconds to go, Estmere won a turnover and despite being very close to the Caldish try line, Hafocer-Potter was more than happy to kick the ball into touch and end the match. Estmere will now face old rivals Satavia in the semi-finals.

Garambura crashed out of the WRWC in spectacular fashion, going down 16-5 against an all-round superior Rizealander team. Rizealand's Victoria Serra Andrade opened the scoring in just 46 seconds, the fastest time ever for a try to be scored in the knockout stages of the Women's Rugby World Cup. Whilst Dempsey was unable to convert, she took two penalty goals inside the first half to stretch their lead to 11-0 at half time. Garambura would strike back in the second half, courtesy of a lovely, well-worked try from Roatta to get Garambura on the scoreboard, but that was it for the Zebras. Madison John looked to have sealed the game with a late 66th minute try in a performance that will leave Rizealanders delighted, and Garambruans scratching their heads reminiscing of what could have been.

The fairytale victory of Hacyinia seemed so unlikely; although it was clear that the crowd were wishing for it. And against all the odds, the victory came. Rwizikuru started off brilliantly - and despite having three tries chalked off by the TMO, lead 10-0 after sixty minutes. It seemed for all the world that the dream was dead for Hacyinia. But then, coinciding with the arrival of 21 year old full-back Bolor Erdene (who plays for Thorialles in the premier Gaullican division), Rwizikuru seemed to simply run out of steam. Erdene scored two incredible tries in the 66th and 74th minute to take the mountain nation level with the great Lionesses of Rwizikuru. And whilst the match looked like it would head into extra time, Hacyinia chose to play on into red time - a risky call that many teams may not have taken. But it paid off. Rwizikuru's defence was mangled, albeit heroically desperate, and a beautiful pop pass from winger Samiya Tursun fed straight into the hands of Erdene who scored the try, and with it, secured the fairy tale victory. Perhaps Rizealand, whom they will face in the Semi-Finals, will be too much of a challenge for the mighty Khutuluns - but that said, that's what everyone thought when Hacyinia played Estmere... and look how that turned out. The Fairytale is on.

For the first time ever, Estmere will not finish in the top two. A poor performance by the hosts, coupled with a costly red card for scrum-half and key playmaker Cynthia Mutezo put paid to their final ambitions. The scoring was opened by a penalty goal from Hafocer-Potter in the 14th minute; although she missed two further kicks in the first half, both of them very achievable and with hindsight perhaps the misses that cost Estmere this game. Mutzeo saw a questionable red after a high tackle resulted in head contact, although Estmere will feel especially hard done by as previous tackles of that nature have not been rewarded with red cards. Initially given a yellow, the card was upgraded to a red under the new Bunker off-screen review rules. Satavia took advantage of the hurting Estmere scoring a couple of quick tries to close out the first half. The second half saw Estmere, even though they were playing a woman down, outperform Satavia in every statistic, but unable to convert into points; Hafocer-Potter nailed two field goals but missed another, and when the Black Widows switched it up and attempted to go for Drop Goals, she butchered those too. This is not a performance she will look back on with pride. Although now out of contention for the Rosewater Cup, Estmere will have an opportunity to take third place this weekend.

The stars aligned for Rizealand as they prepare to play in their first final match since 2003. They swatted aside a strong Hacyinian side, who will no doubt be disappointed to miss out on the final, to take the game 24 points to nil. Despite an early penalty opportunity for Hacyinia, missed by Javadi, Rizealand struck first with a 21st minute try; followed by a second in the first half courtesy of Eliza Duncan. Two more Rizealander tries would follow. Hacyinia only really able to get into the game once; a brilliant interception try by Javadi, but it was chalked off by the TMO after a tackle off the ball by one of her teammates. Rizealand will face fellow Asterian foes Satavia, whilst Hacyinia are set for a rematch of their opening pool game - and miraculous victory - against Estmere.

1' Hacyinia wasting no time here with phases. The ball comes back for Javadi who boots it down the pitch and into touch. Line-out for Estmere just inside the Hacyinian half.
2' Lineout won by Estmere, who pass it out wide but a strong Hacyinian attack stalls any chances of an attack.

HALF TIME
HALF TIME ANALYSIS: An interesting battle so far. Estmere seemed dominant for the first twenty or so minutes, but let in a soft try which they'll be upset about. Hacyinian defence has, however, been on the whole very solid. Estmere have struggled to break through despite dominating possesion in this match. Hacyinia were brought back into this game by the yellow card for Rees, which we have now heard will remain a yellow. They will look to capitalise now whilst Estmere are down to 14 players.

SECOND HALF
40' Good evening! We're back here in Morwall for a second half of what has, so far, been a scintillating test match.
40' Estmere are in possession and look to hoof it up the park.
41' Kick goes out on the full just beyond the Estmerish 22, and Hacyinia will have the throw in.
41' And Hacyinia overthrow it, but Javadi is there to scoop it up and plows well into the Estmerish 22.
42' Forwards phase play, and they look to spread it wide once the time is right. Still with that one player advantage. The ball is still with Hacyinia.

2023 Women's Rugby World Cup Final: An Unstoppable Force Meets an Immovable Object

After losing their first match of the 2023 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Estmere to Gaullica, the Rizealand Women’s National Rugby Team or the “Bears” have bounced back to claim a spot in the final match against Satavia that will be played this Sunday, September 23, at the Wolfgar Godfredson Memorial Stadium in Morwall. In other words, an unstoppable force in the form of Satavia is about to clash head on with an immovable object in the form of the Bears.

The Unstoppable Force
It is not hyperbolic to call the Satavia Women’s National Rugby Union Team or the “Jaguars” an unstoppable force. While many of the teams this year focused on offense, the Jaguars stood out by scoring a total of seventeen tries during the pool round which was more than any other qualifying nation with the exception of Garambura, who also the same number. Compared to the other qualifying nations, Satavia also scored the second highest number of points with 123 total points, ten points behind Garambura.

In their first match for the pool rounds of the World Cup, the Jaguars narrowly bested Garambura 28-27, even with a player down. They also crushed Vanhar 68-6 and pulled off a victory against a strong performance by Maucha who took an early lead only to be knocked out by a classic Satavian comeback. Only the pool match against Scovern ended in a 10-17 defeat after Scovern’s defense bogged down Satavia’s attacks and Satavia’s Hazel Woods failed to score on any of her kicks, although Satavian fans will insist their loss was caused by poor officiating from Etrurian referee Isa Vaccarella.

After qualifying for the knockout stage, the Satavians continued to prove they are an unstoppable force by advancing past two elite Euclean opponents. In their quarterfinal match, they took on the Gaullicans who, up until that game, had not lost a single match. Despite Gaullica’s strong defending, a series of well taken penalties by Woods allowed Satavia to leave the match with a 12-8 victory. In their semifinal match, they took on the hosts, Estmere, who had just bested a strong Caldian side in the quarterfinals. After breaking through Estmere’s defenses with two tries and successful conversions early on, the Satavians held off Estmere and benefited from a series of misses by Estmere’s Hafocer-Potter to ultimately win the match 14-9. But despite their solid offensive performance and statistics, what will happen when they come head-to-head with the Bears?

The Immovable Object
Where the Jaguars have impressive offensive statistics, the Bears have impressive defensive statistics. Of the qualified nations during the pool rounds, Rizealand tied with Gaullica in having the second lowest number of conceded points after Caldia who had the least.

In their first pool match against Gaullica, the Bears suffered their one and only defeat as the Gaullicans were able to pick apart their defense early on and score two tries plus conversions. Although the Bears made a valiant effort at a comeback, their only consolation prize was a bonus point after limiting Gaullica’s victory to 14-10. In their second match against Satucin, the Bears dusted themselves off and prevented Satucin from scoring a single point during the entire match. And although Sauticin’s own defense was equally strong, the Bears eventually broke through and ended the match with a 10-0 victory. In their third match against Azmara, the Bears were able to rack up another four points plus a bonus point for scoring four separate tries and prevented Azmara from scoring all but one, ending the match with a 34-10 victory for the Bears. But in their last match against Etruria, the Bears narrowly won 10-8 as their offense struggled to have the same success and only succeeded in an early and a late try. Their defense however remained strong and they again only let one try through.

While the Jaguars’ route to the final went through Euclea, the Bears’ route took them through Coius. In their first quarterfinal matchup, they faced off against Garambura who had tied with Satavia for the most tries scored in the pool stage and had finished at the top of their pool. During the match, the Bears’ defense proved immovable as they severely limited a normally robust Garamburan offense and limited them to only one try. But despite their numerous opportunities, the Bears’ failed to dominate offensively by only scoring two tries while Georgia Dempsey failed to score most of her conversions and penalties. The result was a 16-5 victory that left much to be desired. In their semifinal match, the Bears took on Hacyinia who had come from behind to defeat Estmere in their pool match and qualify with the top spot in their pool. And despite a strong performance by Hacyinia, the Bears’ defense had one of their best games as they successfully shut out Hacyinia from scoring a single point during the entire match. The Bears’ offense also put together one of their best games of the tournament by scoring four tries and ending the match in a resounding 24-0 victory. But despite this performance, will the Bears remain immovable against Satavia?

The Final Matchup
Tomorrow’s final between the Bears and Jaguars will be historic for multiple reasons. First, it is the first time in Women’s Rugby World Cup history that a Euclean nation has not qualified for the final. Second, it is the first final between two Asterian nations and follows the 2023 Coupe du Monde which also had an all-Asteria final between the AFR and Satucin. Third, it will break a tie between Rizealand and Satavia who each have won the World Cup final once with Rizealand winning in 2003 and Satavia winning in 2011.

The only thing certain about tomorrow’s game is that it is a definite toss-up as each team will play to their strengths while exploiting the other side’s weaknesses. Due to the Bears’ strong defense that frequently limits the opponent to only one successful try, the Jaguars will likely look to Gaullica’s early performance as an example of how to penetrate Rizealand’s defenses. On the flipside, the Bears will be looking to their previous matchup against Garambura as an example of how to successfully hold a powerful offense at bay while scoring enough tries and points to win. Ultimately, one team will break and one team will leave as the champion of the Asterias.

4' And now here's an opportunity for Rizealand... up and under delivered well by Dempsey, and Hunter challenged for the ball in the air but couldn't quite get there.

Satavia love chaos, and at the moment, they aren't getting it. Some Herculean defensive efforts from Rizealand on their own try line too - they'll be happy with that. Satavia need to find some kind of way to break through the defence.

40' And we're back underway here! 40 more minutes of rugby action in this Women's World Cup. Satavia with possession.
