WORLD LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIPS 43--(Everything Thread)

Postby Captina Island » Mon Aug 28, 2023 9:13 pm

WELCOME TO THE ARMED REPUBLIC OF CAPTINA ISLAND!

43rd World Lacrosse Championships

The Captina Company, through its Sports Department, welcomes the nations participating in the World Lacrosse Championship to our little corner of paradise.

Captina Island is the southernmost nation in Rushmore, made up of 6.3 million people of which approximately 31% are ethnic Captini--the native people who occupied the island prior to discovery--and 42% Italini, descendants of the settlers who arrived after 1922, with about 20% identifying themselves as mixed. The remainder are of other ethnic backgrounds and nationalities.

Captina Island thrives in all aspects of life thanks to the rigorous discipline of “The Plan” (officially known as The Captina Island National Community Operation Master Plan [CINCOMP]) which organizes the priorities, agenda, and the day to day running of proper society within the Armed Republic.

All economic affairs are controlled by the five major privately owned corporations that operate under the provisions of The Plan, holding exclusive license to conduct the nationwide administration of the following areas*:

Captina National Organization (CNO)--Defense/Health & Medical/Education
State Economic Corporation (SEC)--Retail/Banking/Transportation/Technology
Industrial & Manufacturing Alliance (IMA)--Production/Raw Materials/Wholesale
The Captina Company (TCC)--Social/Entertainment/Utilities
Brandstadter Corporation Authority (BCA)--Food/Agriculture/Construction

Any remaining areas that would be under the control of a constituted government are handled by The Burkett Group, which is owned in equal shares by the five main corporations and a public ownership scheme funded by a 50 crown (about NS$10) per week deduction from the wages of all citizens. TBG functions as a bureaucratic administrative body, coordinating inter-company affairs in addition to providing the personnel for things like police/fire protection, vital statistics record keeping, public spaces maintenance, and other public services.

TBG operates from the National Capital District of Big Flint which has a population of 84,000, while the other corporations each have their own headquarters city, although they have national operations; within each major city, the 'affiliated' companies have satellite offices to handle the daily business.

*this is not an exhaustive list of areas of control

The Tournament

This thread is the place for all registered nations to begin posting their rosters and roleplays ahead of the first matchday.

The particulars of the competition are reviewed here as follows:

Single round robin format, with cutoffs every other day.

21-28 teams—groups of 5-7 teams each with the top 2 advancing + 3rd placers 12 advancers, the top sides seeded into to the quarterfinal.

28+ teams—groups of 5-7 teams each, top 3 finishers advancing to the knockout stage; group winners seeded into the quarterfinal.

The factor at issue is how many teams would advance to the knockout stage. The WLC have used a 12 team format for much of the previous 13 tournaments Baker Park has participated in, and this seems to be a good number if entries are more than 20

Based on current signups there will be Four groups in the preliminary stage.

Scorination: standard xkorinate formula, using the official WLC rankings.

tie-breakers would be head to head points, head to head goal difference, overall goal difference, goals scored, and coin flip (OOC extra tie-breaking match).

No drawn matches during group stage (OT in all matches). 2 points for a win, 1 bonus point for an OT loss.

RP: roster bonus equal to one full MD of scoring. Daily RP based on factors of quality and originality of writing.
Use of AI generated writing is discouraged, but not prohibited if the user declares that some element of the post is influenced by artificial means; organic graphic enhancement is encouraged but as with writing, AI generated graphics should be declared up front in a post. Accurate attribution is the red line that will be enforced--penalty for non-attribution will be loss off all RP bonus accumulated.

Users who do not consider English their native language will not be penalized for awkward phrasing or structure--if I understand the point you're trying to make, it's fine.

All RP bonus will be accumulative throughout and reasonably generous. This tournament has a history of rewarding users who show effort and creativity.

There were 12 nations that had an existing ranking in the WLC and these were broken into 3 pots with the remaining 16 nations randomly grouped into 4 additional pots. National Information
Image

Captina Island is located in the most southwestern area of Rushmore and much of the population lives within 25 miles of the ocean as the interior is mountainous and heavily forested. No major population center of more than a few thousand is located in the area that covers nearly 80% of the country. Mount Soanea'a is the highest point at 1,847 feet (563.2 m), located in the southeastern part of the island.
Although the interior is sparsely populated it is not inaccessible, with a modern expressway system that connects all major cities in addition to a rail network that is primarily used for movement of goods to various parts of the island.

The climate is sub-tropical with most weather systems remaining to the north of the island which brings warm breezes from the west and northwest; the WLC will take place in the driest season of the year with the chance of precipitation extremely low (and low humidity as well). The island is 4 hours behind Rushmori nations in Pavola and 6 hours behind Terranean nations in the eastern part of the region.

The people of Captina Island are friendly and welcoming to visitors from across the multiverse and visitors will find all of their needs provided for during their stay; safety is maintained by the Polizia Nazione (PN), identifiable by their bright red berets and peaked caps, while bright green headgear and safety vests identify the Citizen Patrol, which provides assistance to those looking for directions, in need of non-emergency help and also help keep the streets clean.

July & August are for mandatory military training drills for all men & women between 18-40 years of age. Generally 3 four week periods are used to stagger the amount of the population away from their jobs at any one time.

The Captina Island currency is the crown, with 5 crowns equal to NS$1. Local food is centered on rice, pasta, pork, seafood, cabbage, field greens and root vegetables. Food is heavily seasoned but not overly spicy while dairy and cheese is rare in everyday cuisine.

Venues:
The tournament will be played at six venues across the island in five of the nation's major cities.

You've arrived at one of the premier competitions in the multiverse, set to take on a field of former champions and newcomers to the WLC. How much attention will the team get back home? Will there be numerous outlets sending representatives to cover the event? Will there be radio/TV/live streaming coverage?

This is merely a help aid, there is no additional bonus or any penalty of you choose to utilize the prompt or follow your own RP path.

RP NOTES
the Supermassive Sea Dome is a post-cyberpunk setting, not urban fantasy, sci fi, futurism/pessimism, etc.
Magic or supernatural stuff should have some kind of scientifically understandable manifestation.
No sadistic cruelty.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PICK SCORERS, ETC.
I love lax but haven't watched it in a little while, never played it and didn't grow up in it so my RP will be focused more on worldbuilding, personalities, etc.

Manager: Makeeyah Brantley (44 years old)
After being defensive coordinator under Hall of Famer Jordan Helms, she steps in as manager following his unexpected retirement. She looks to bring fresh perspective to a team looking to return to its usual place atop the lacrosse multiverse.

Defensive Coordinator: Edwin Harkey (41)
Brantley opted to hire a defensive coordinator and allow him to run the defence. She reasoned that she had enough responsibility as manager.
Offensive Coordinator: Tyler Pawlenty (51 years old)
Pawlenty helped mold offenses in college, in particular Rypien State College during a four-year period when that school won three collegiate national titles. His teams emphasise possession and patience, often including multiple passes before taking the perfect shot.
Assistant Coach: George Tomlin (35 years old)
Tomlin recently retired as a faceoff specialist after a collegiate career that saw him win 78 percent of his faceoffs. During his professional career in Sarzonia, he won 69 percent of his faceoffs. He can coach multiple styles of faceoffs, taking into account multiple fogos.
Assistant Coach: Bradley Morse (55 years old)
Serves as goalie coach. He helped several Sarzonian World Lacrosse Championship winning teams with goalies in an informal capacity. Now, he's coming out of retirement to provide assistance as a paid full-time coach after Whitlock convinced him to do so.

What do you do when you have a team that are used to success but hasn’t achieved their ultimate goal in the last two tournaments?

That answer usually depends, but in the eyes of the Sarzonian lacrosse intelligencia, you typically view the lack of success as a speed bump and look forward to an opportunity to run it back. In the case of the team approaching the 44th World Lacrosse Championships, making a change to either the roster or the managerial staff is the last thing on your mind.

However, that changed the morning four-time WLC champion manager Jordan Helms walked into the facility with a resignation letter in hand. He’d decided that he’d accomplished all he could in not only winning the four WLC titles, but in capturing them consecutively.

The feat not only allowed the Sarzonian national lacrosse team to catch previous overlords Abanhfleft, but it also caused Sarzonia overtake them. They did more than simply overtake the Fleftic haul of six crowns. They obliterated the record by tacking on three additional trophies. The fact that the four titles came consecutively meant that the Stars smashed the previous record of two in a row, set and matched several times.
So why did Helms walk away, exactly?

“It was becoming more and more difficult for me to deal with the rigours of training camp and the group stages. Oh, sure, hoisting a trophy aloft is great,” he said, “but the journey was becoming a grind for me.” Helms said he waited until the final week before training camp began to retire because he wanted Brantley to assume the managerial role.

He needn’t have worried. The technical staff in charge of such decisions had already pegged Brantley as Helms’s eventual successor. However, she didn’t know that, nor was she aware that Helms was even considering retirement.

“I was looking forward to drawing up defensive plays and working with my players on that side of the pitch,” she said. When she received the call and request to interview for the managerial role, she asked, “does [Helms] know?” When told he was retiring, she immediately responded, “I’m sorry: WHAT?!”

Brantley said after a three-hour conversation with Helms that she was surprised and disappointed that she wasn’t working with him to win the pair’s fifth WLC championship and the 10th one overall for Sarzonia, but she relished the opportunity to win her first as the woman calling the shots.

“It’s not lost on me that I’m starting this new role and I have a chance to establish my own legacy,” she said. “It’s a huge responsibility. Sarzonian lacrosse has a proud tradition with the likes of Harold Price, Jordan, and Mike Sandusky bringing hardware here. I’ve got enormous shoes to fill.”

Brantley said her first decision was to look for and hire a defensive coordinator. She said she wanted Edwin Harkey, her choice as defensive coordinator, to call the defensive plays.

“We’re on the same page about what to call and mechanics and philosophies and the like,” she said. “He brings a fresh pair of eyes to the team and I’m looking forward to seeing where we go with that.” Brantley said that other than having a new manager and defensive coordinator, not much else would change about the team.

“It’s still the same squad,” she said. “I firmly believe in the notion ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.” “Obviously, we may have some new approaches to things and I might do things differently because I’m not Jordan, but if we’re good, we’re good.”

One thing that wasn’t discussed was the fact that Brantley would be the first female manager, and first Afro-Sarzonian woman to manage the team. Harkey said the word around the organisation and players was race and gender had nothing to do with the decision.

“We’re not doing this to promote diversity,” Harkey said. “We’re not doing this to check off boxes or anything. She was the defensive coordinator for one of the greatest WLC teams in history. That alone is good enough reason to name her as manager when someone with the credentials of a Jordan Helms walks away from the game.”

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL LACROSSE TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's twentieth time participating in the World Lacrosse Championship. Seventeen times Abanhfleft has taken part in the WLC, and in six of those times they have emerged as champions. For reasons that can be simply summed up as "it's the best thing we've done in a while," the Democratic Republic sent forth their women's national lacrosse team for their first seven appearances in the competition. The women's team, led by the "Fearsome Threesome" of Menan Alrisheb, Fatima Alsambis, and Cecilia Cuvimi, managed to win third place in their first ever tournament WLC XIX, beating the Serbian Empire to nab the bronze from under the veteran nation's noses. They went on to win back-to-back titles in WLC 22 and WLC 23 before a miserable performance in WLC 24 saw them eliminated in the group stage, but they have come back to win it all once again in WLC 25 to set history as the first nation to win three titles in four attempts. It was then decided that it was time to switch things up, and so for the first time in WLC history, Abanhfleft sent forth a mixed team of men and women to play international lacrosse in WLC 30. And they came close, but were still unable to snag the ultimate prize, losing to the eventual winners Wrexwic in the final. Eventually, finally, Abanhfleft did pick up another title on home soil in WLC 32; unfortunately they were unable to defend it in WLC 33, and were only able to collect the bronze in Jeckland. Victory was achieved yet again in WLC 35, and the objective of becoming a six-time lacrosse champion was achieved immediately afterwards, in WLC 36. Abanhfleft couldn't stop Sarzonia from picking up title number six in Baker Park, and then the repercussions of the Ripperidone scandal affected the team during WLC 38, forcing them out at an earlier time than usual. The team came close to bowing out of the group stage in Cassadaigua, but a late surge saw the Amazons sneak into the playoffs, only for Banija to finally get one over their eternal lacrosse rivals in the semifinals. Now Abanhfleft heads right back into the lion's den with a new coach and new team captain to attempt to put an end to Banija's potential rise as the new lacrosse superpower.

The history of lacrosse in Abanhfleft is both long and short, in that it has been in the country for a long time, but a concise summary of said history can be written down in just ten to fifteen sentences or maybe more. Lacross was introduced in Abanhfleft by vacationing Canadian college students and expatriates who missed playing the game. The first truly Fleftic lacrosse players came from association football and field hockey backgrounds, and these players played in seasonal lacrosse clubs to augment their salaries during their respective sports' offseasons. The first national lacrosse league in Abanhfleft was established in 1929, and was composed of 7 teams coming from the Capital Islands. The Fleftic national lacrosse league system adopted its current franchise format in 2001, with the National League (now called the Lacrosse League of Abanhfleft) separating itself from the pyramid and becoming an independent organization of its own right. The Fleftic Lacrosse Federation (Samahang Lakros ng Abanhfleft or SLA) was established in 1930 to manage the leagues, and to see to the creation of a national team. The Abanhfleft men's national lacrosse team played its first game in 1931, where they lost 1-0 to a team of Montreal college players.

1963 saw the first attempts to introduce women's lacrosse into Abanhfleft. Women's lacrosse had vastly different rules from men's lacrosse, and while these programs saw some success in the mid-sixties, Fleftic women decided that the rules of women's lacrosse were "too soft," and simply adopted the rules of men's lacrosse. When the women's national lacrosse team played its first games in 1969, they surprised many other teams with their extremely aggressive style of play, the likes of which were more usually seen in men's lacrosse games. This led to many incidents of broken legs, broken arms, broken ribs, broken jaws, and so on and so forth. Eventually, the SLA established another women's team, this one focusing on women's lacrosse rules. Teams playing Abanhfleft are well-advised to treat the women like men because the girls will certainly treat their opponents like Fleftic men.

They have won six World Lacrosse Championships, winning in WLC 22, 23, 25, 32, 35 and 36. Starting in WLC 26, the team entered a rebuilding stage in which it maintained its ranking in the multiverse as much as possible without really challenging for the title. But in WLC 30, the SLA declared the rebuilding done, and the national team backed up this announcement with a deep playoff run that went all the way to the final, where they were unfortunately stopped by Wrexwic. Abanhfleft fell in the Round of 12 against hosts Baker Park in WLC 31, but the Amazons would come out on top of the lacrosse world once again after winning the championship on their home soil in WLC 32. Fortunes have been up and down in more recent times though; while the team crashed out of the quarterfinals in WLC 33, they were able to collect a third place finish in WLC 34. The team plowed through the tough schedule created by the Casaran format in WLC 35, proving the adage that "you can only beat the teams in front of you" true. One of those teams would be Vangaziland, a fellow serial winner in the competition, and in a final sure to go down as a classic, Abanhfleft emerged as 9-6 winners to lift their record-equaling fifth title. In WLC 36, the objective was to break the record and snatch it from Sarzonia, who were also planning to do the same. The Amazons defeated the Stars in the quarterfinals of WLC 36, and the team beat such giants as Banija and Cassadaigua to lift the World Lacrosse Championship for the sixth time. Now, the mission is simple: seven in 37.

Additional information
Nickname: The Amazons
Colors: All white with blue, orange, and green stripes on the waistline and yellow numbers in a red circle (home kit); all red with yellow letters and numbers (away kit)
Style: Abanhfleft is an attacking team. The legacy of football and hockey players dabbling in lacrosse in its early days in Abanhfleft has resulted in a playing style that emphasizes getting the ball up front for chances to score. This, however, leaves the defense a bit thin, as at least two midfielders join the attackers in forays up to the goal, leaving behind only the defenders and the keeper. The midfield makes up for this by rushing back to their positions as soon as the opponents have acquired the ball.

Lacrosse. The Medicine Game of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the people of the 6 Nations and beyond.

We play this game knowing full well of its origins and of its importance to the Six Nations and those who hold it in such reverence.
As such, we are proud that both our Head Coach and Captain hail from the Confederacy.

Our aim? To promote the participation of American Indian athletes in TJUN-ian sports, especially for the Confederacy.
So much so, in fact, that at least one Haudenosaunee must start each game we play - by the ruling of Lacrosse TJUN-ia.
This is to recognise the inventors of the sport while also ensuring a continued Native presence within our team.

A new era has arrived.
One which celebrates the old and encourages the new to play this medicine game.
Let the games begin again.

#11 is retired in honor of Jessica Crockett

Coach: Jessica Crockett (48)
Asst Coach: Michelle Eastwood (47)

Team Notes:
- Team is neutral in focus, both offensively and defensively, therefore we do not use a high modifier.
- Team is not looking to be excessively physical, and will shy away from any cheap actions. Physical play is kept within the rules. However, if others get cheap will us, they will respond accordingly. They are not afraid to throw punches (or receive them) from male players, but will only do so in response to an opponent's actions, they do not instigate it. Instigating something with Douglas is not advised unless your player is exceptionally good at fighting.
-- In general, this team is mostly the same as WLC 41, but has turnover in important places, such as in goal. Lauren Parrett was part of the team as the third string goalkeeper last time, but her play domestically has seen her elevated to the top spot. There is some concern about this becoming an older roster, especially in the midfield, so expect to see the reserves get a good amount of action.
-- Courtney Schulz is a speedster (even at her age), and can score goals but is primarily the type of player to get 2-3x as many assists than goals. Up front, balanced scoring is expected between the three starters, one of them is not more dangerous than the other two. Tremont is a sneaky reliable scorer, too.

Just as humans have always been curious about what lies beneath the sea, the fish of the Great Lakes and St Lawrence River have always been curious about the land above their shores. Researchers studying the land have learned a great deal. They have decoded two human languages (English and French) and created many new technologies inspired by human tools. They have also discovered that humans have their own sports, and some of them became interested in lacrosse.

Most inhabitants of the Great Lakes and St Lawrence use their species as their surname. For the ones who have other kinds of surnames (e.g. human family names, place names) their species is noted on the roster. Players who don't have legs and/or can't breathe air (most of the team) have various kinds of mechanical equipment and water tanks to help them get around on land.

Starting X:

Goalie:

Marie White -- human

Defense:

Joe Musky
Jessie-Lou Lamprey
Sally Trout

Midfielders:

Kyle Gichigami -- bass
Lucy Catfish
Mindy Walleye

Attackers:

Jodi Shiner, Charlie Shiner, Maureen Shiner -- three minnows in a trench coat
Jackson Bass
Hallie Merman -- a mermaid from Lake Superior, they use the name "Merman" for merfolk of all genders

The Allamunnic National Team at the 43rd World Lacrosse Championships

Background: It's been nearly 30 cycles since an Allamunnic team last properly darkened the door of a World Lacrosse Championship tournament. At one point considered a rising superpower of the sport (stringing together two championships and three second-place finishes between WLCs VI and XIII), the country by-and-large discontinued its international lacrosse participation after debacle in which WLC XIV was cancelled, and then clerical errors resulted in the team not being registered for the resumption of the tournament.

All that is to say, the Allamunnic lacrosse tournament has been dormant for a while. They had already come onto the scene, made their mark, and disappeared from it before several of the sports' current upper crust had entered the scene. Expectations are... not low, per se, but certainly very, very tempered.

A few notes: the country's proper name is... kind of in-flux. On an in-universe level, "Allamunnic States" is the legacy name until such time as I (Fanboy, the player) finish doing some minor retconning, restructuring, and rewriting. That's likely to be around the end of the cycle, so don't sweat it. But basically, that's part of why I'm posting from this account and not the "Allamunnic States" account. You might see in roleplays mentions of "Draakuri", "Ottonian", and "Eonese" players... Allamunnic is fine for external purposes, don't sweat it too much.

Please note that there are two "A's", two "L's", two "N's", and one "M" in "Allamunnic."

Roleplay Permissions
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my goalscorers: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Yes, although I ask that you keep it semi-realistic (like try to mostly obey the laws of physics, nothing *too* Looney Tunes-ish, preferably).
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but please leave severity vague; it's fine to say the player didn't return to the game, but I'd like to determine how severe it is beyond that.
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes, but same provisos as above.
Godmod suspension events: Please TG me first on this account.
Godmod other events: Please TG me first on this account.

The Staff
Head Coach: Frank O'Donal (Age: 72)
Strength & Conditioning: Kassandra Dunning (Age: 53)
Skills Coach: Izaak Muller (Age: 56)
Style Modifier: +2

This section, at least, has familiar faces; when the federal government was looking to resume it's WLC participation, it approached former national team head coach Frank O'Donal (previously rendered as "Frank McDowell") to head up the squad. He, in turn, recruited former midfielder Izaak Muller (previously rendered as "Zak Mueller") and Kassandra Dunning (formerly rendered as "Cassie Downing") to serve as the Skills Coach and Strength & Conditioning Coaches respectively, although in practice running and coaching the team is spread between the three; O'Donal has made it clear this is a one-year un-retirement to resume the program, after which the plan, assuming the team doesn't fail so spectacularly that a clean slate is desired, is for either Muller or Dunning to take over at the top of the program, or even for the two to act as co-head coaches.

Marie White and Hallie Merman flew to Captina Island like normal people. Hallie needed a wheel chair to navigate and the airport and she got some funny looks when people noticed her bright silvery tail dangling down the front of the chair -- but Marie was there to help, and they both made it safely to Port Genoa.

The rest of the team had a hard time with air travel. They needed water to breathe, and water was heavy. If you filled an airliner with water, it would not fly. So they traveled by sea in an amphibious tank. Marie and Hallie were sitting by the boat ramp when it came trundling up onto the shore, dripping and covered with seaweed. The fish swam around excitedly inside the tank as they realized they had arrived. One of the bass bumped headfirst into the thick acrylic window.

Lodging was a challenge too. Even if you found an aquarium, that didn't mean they were renting out tanks for visiting fish. Swimming pools were not a good option either because they were usually contaminated with toxic chemicals and/or packed with human swimmers. If all else failed, they could always drive out to a local river to fill their tank with fresh unchlorinated water.

The tank had been sealed for most of their trip to keep out the saltiness of the sea, so pretty much the first thing they wanted to do was clean it out and refill it with new water. Once they had freshened up their water, then they could think about the tournament ahead...

Runner-up

Previously controlled by the Universities Athletics Coalition, the sport is now governed by the Baker Park Lacrosse Association (BPLA). Dawn Thornton, the BPLA Chairwoman has been re-elected to a second term as President of the World Lacrosse Council.
Baker Park first entered a team in the 29th World Lacrosse Championship, co-hosted in Razenthuria & Banija; the all-female squad made up of college-aged players advanced from pool play to the knockout round.
The nation has hosted the 31st, 37th, and 42nd editions of the WLC, as well as the 2nd Atlantian Oceania Lacrosse Classic, prior to WLC 34.
While the sport in BP was traditionally a female pursuit, males participated in intramural or recreational level competition; with the expansion of game into official intercollegiate recognition, the National Team have adopted an all gender policy which has seen expansion of the player pool.

All Time Record--101 wins, 48 losses (82-34 in WLC)
Nickname--a revival brought the identification of many of the nation's non-soccer sporting teams as "Elks" back into modern usage; the Elk (Wapiti) is the national animal of the Commonwealth.
Style Modifier--+1

Shannon Fries went out on top having led the Baker Park National Lacrosse team to their first ever World Lacrosse Championship title on home soil in the 42nd edition, a circumstance nobody in the sport begrudged her for; she'd given nearly half her life to building the international profile of nation as a player, assistant and then Head Coach of the National Team.

Her replacement is no stranger to Fries or the BPLA although this will be his first time working in the NT setup; Eric Pearson is the Head Coach at Osheana Capital University, a conference rival of Osheana A&T and he will bring along a pair of new assistants, his OCU #2 Samantha Zachary and St Warren State HC Patrick Lombardi, while retaining Megan Ostrander the de facto NT #2.
The BPNT broke through the century mark in victories in their 8-5 Semi-Final victory over HUElavia in WLC 42 and their first group stage fixture in WLC 43 against The Kytler Peninsulae--the champions of WLC 13 and one of six other nations in the field who have captured the title--will be the 150th international match in BP history.

THE CAPTINA COMPANY LACROSSE TEAM

Captina Island's National Lacrosse Team put on a credible showing in Baker Park in the 42nd WLC and now the pressure will be on as they will be the host nation for this edition.

Head Coach Bonaventure Ferretti molded a rag-tag group into a side that upset former champions Cassadaigua on opening day and edged Northwest Kalactin in overtime to have a slim chance on the final matchday to advance, falling at the final hurdle.

The National Team returned to the Commonwealth this past spring to play several matches against Baker Park colleges in order to gauge their progress and came away with valuable experience along with several positive reviews from opposing coaches. They will retain a male only side for this cycle, as the development of the sport among women is progressing with an eye towards gender integration in the near future.

National Team Nickname: Captina Island's national animal is the peacock, although it has never been used as a sporting appellation except for the Women's football NT's use of "Peahens"; the men's football team are generally known as the "Oro e Rossi" (Gold & Red) but a survey of citizens have convinced The Captina Company Sports Division to market the WLC side as the Peacocks.

Head Coach--Bonaventure Ferretti
Assistants—Fabio Bernardi, Rico Mazzelli, Tyrus Goodwin

Dottori Ferretti is the godfather of lacrosse on Captina Island, having brought his knowledge of the sport from his time playing overseas. He admits to having been indirectly influenced by the success of Sarzonia and Abanhfleft, looking to incorporate elements of both nations' style.

Welcome to the opening matchday of the 43rd World Lacrosse Championships! We are live at The Captina Company Sports Ground in Geneva City where Captina Island will face off against The Spartan Dominion in the opening match. Later this evening, the number 1 ranked team in the Multiverse, Banija, will face newcomers Drehda. In Clarksburg, reigning WLC Champions Baker Park will face off against The Kytler Peninsulae which will begin just a few minutes after faceoff here and former champions Abanhfleft and Allamunnic State will open against one another at Fairmont Stadium at the same time, with the nightcap featuring Cassadigua against new boys Svobodala. Nine times winners Sarzonia have a bye on the first matchday so only three of top four seeds will be in action.

“All right, that’ll wrap us up! Go in, take your showers and we’ll see you on the practice pitch tomorrow afternoon for the final walk-through.”

The words were exactly the same as a particularly astute player would have expected to hear from Jordan Helms at the end of a grueling training session. In fact, several of the veteran players on the Sarzonian national lacrosse team would have been able to point out exactly how identical Makeeyah Brantley’s words were to her team.

There was one difference. Instead of a male voice barking them out, it was a female voice. It was the longtime defensive coordinator who was now responsible for the direction of the team as a whole. This new era of Sarzonian lacrosse began with her.

If you asked the veteran players, they would tell you she sounded as confident in herself and her managerial abilities as Helms was coming off his and the team’s fourth consecutive World Lacrosse Championships title. She carried that swagger onto the practice pitch. She held it in her hands as she cradled the whistle that hung on a lanyard around her neck ready to sound the start or end of training. She sounded as certain of her knowledge of the sport and her abilities to bring Sarzonia its 10th title as anyone.

Publicly, she was. She talked a confident game. “As always, our goal and our expectation is to win the WLC,” she said. “Further etch our place in the history of this sport. Establish a standard that no one else that comes after us will ever be able to meet or exceed.”

As she sat in the manager’s office after the players showered and got dressed and the assorted members of the media crossed the threshold and out of her office, she summoned offensive coordinator Tyler Pawlenty.

“You wanted to see me, Key?” he asked. Brantley looked up with a wan smile and motioned for Pawlenty to sit down in the seat directly across from her. He did. Pawlenty and Brantley hadn’t talked much during her tenure as defensive coordinator but had built a decent enough relationship. However, the last two WLCs saw the two coaches become close friends. Pawlenty was a good sounding board. He was also a font of great advice.

“Ty,” she said, “I really hope I don’t fuck this up.”

Pawlenty looked at Brantley with a dint of surprise. She seemed confident to everyone, coaches and players included, and this was the first time she was letting down her guard.

“Jordan set a standard nobody in history has even come close to meeting,” she said. “Four WLC titles in a row? No one ever had three in a row before he did it. And then there’s the little matter of Sarzonia being a nine-time champion. No one else has more than six.”

“And you’re feeling the weight of that right now,” Pawlenty said.

“You better fucking believe I do,” she said. Shatenia would be the team’s first official opponents after they opened their pool play with a 15-9 loss to The Jovannic, but Pawlenty reconised that the ghosts of Stars teams past would be a far more formidable foe.

“Key, you’re doing fine!” Pawlenty said. “You’re doing exactly the things Jordan would’ve done.” He paused for a moment, thinking to himself that perhaps that might not have been the flex he wanted it to sound like. After all, Brantley isn’t Helms, although that could be considered good or bad depending on results.

“What I meant is, I’m sure Jordan would approve of everything you’ve done so far. You don’t have to be him. Be yourself. Maybe take some of the best of his managerial methods and apply them to yourself. There’s a reason Jordan wanted you to take over for him.”

Brantley nodded. “But still,” she said, “if I fall flat on my face,”

“You won’t,” Pawlenty said. “And even if you aren’t an immediate success, you’ll get a chance to put your own stamp on this team and carve your own legacy. Don’t worry about being the next Jordan Helms. Hell, don’t worry about being the next Rob Davies.” Brantley looked up. Pawlenty deliberately invoked the name of the failed manager who succeeded the legendary Harold Price before the ILF coaxed Price out of retirement for one more shot at glory.

“I’d settle for doing what Mike Sandusky did,” she said, referring to the Stars manager who was the only championship-winning skipper without four trophies to his name.
“You can do better than that,” Pawlenty said. “Let whomever replaces you worry about following in your footsteps. You got this.”

Brantley still wasn’t so sure, but she knew she’d at least get a fair shot at it.

Little War Logs: The First Battle Of Good Starts

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Sep 06, 2023 12:44 pm

After all this time...it's time to restart again. The Little War Jaguars of TJUN-ia took until the final Battle of their first WLC to finally get a win in the Final Battle of Lifting. Now, Ty Halftown's ensemble of TJUN-ia's best Lacrosse minds were back with a ranking to their name and a new mission in mind - to win more than one Battle. That's all he wants and this group presented a warpath that could be favourable to us, but could this team get it done? Could they win another game...and then some?

The First Battle of our 2nd World Lacrosse Championship would up against a debutant named Attestalterragaby at the IMA Stadium in Port Genoa, a team that we knew nothing about other than a team sheet. No one on our side of things knew what to expect from this game but what we ended up getting was a game of firepower and intruege, one where firepower was the name of the game. Our opponents showed their offensive capabilities by scoring 8 goals in this game, with William Thompson managing 3 by his own and Daniel Martinez getting 2. But we were the experienced team in this contest, in relative terms at least, and that would propel us towards glory on this day. We managed 13 goals to get the win, with Shonwahnonkon Sundown managing a spectacular 6 all on his own while Nadin Qaraqra and William Thompson managed 3 each - with the odd goal going to Jak Hardy. In the end, 13-8 sounded about right for the game...and just like that, the First Battle of Good Starts was over in Captina Island and we matched our win total from last time.

One down, 6 more go to. We'll have a bye come up next before we must suit up to take on another debutant in Maraonia in Big Flint. The War had only just begun...but things can only get better, right? GO LITTLE WAR JAGS!

BP opens WLC with victory
by Katie Eisner, Staff Writer
for The Western Observer

Fairmont, Captina Island--The Baker Park National Team began defense of their World Lacrosse Championship title with a 10-4 victory over The Kytler Peninsulae at Brandstadter Park in Clarksburg before 10,043 spectators.

It was their ninth consecutive victory in tournament play, giving new Coach Eric Pearson his first win in charge. Co-captain Ellie Mendevlovich had a hat trick and newcomers Olivia Stone and Levi Coleman each added their maiden tally. Grace Marshall faced 14 Kytler shots and made 4 saves.

Pearson was happy with the result and the with the chance to work most of the squad into the contest. "Everything is a bit new for everyone, so glad to get all the new players a few shifts. Both sides had the first game jitters, which is understandable. We've got it out of our system and now we can prep for the next game."

Newcomers Sea Dome will be the opponent at Fairmont Stadium here and will be confident about their chances after defeating HUElavia in their first match.

RP Prompt for MD 3--
Captina Island is a multiracial mix of the native Polynesian people who lived on the island, the Captini and the Italiani who settled here after 1923. What kind of ethnic makeup does your nation have? Has there been an amalgamation of peoples into a "typical" native?
