A VISITOR'S GUIDE TO TUMBRA

LOCATED in central Esportiva, the Federal Republic of Tumbra is a sprawling, modern democratic republic of a hundred and twenty-one million people. Comprising twenty-five states, twelve stadiums have been allocated to the hosting of the World Cup. A full map of the country can be found here.

Airports, Getting To and Travelling Within Tumbra

Tumbra is a country of many climates; cold in the north, temperate in the middle and warm in the south. The sparkling, white-sanded beaches of the south and eastern coast, the mountains of the west and the boundless plains of central Tumbra also offer dazzling tourist spots if you wish to just relax. There's also the more metropolitan cities, chock-full of culture and nightlife for the less nature-inclined amongst visitors.

Getting to Tumbra would usually entail taking a plane from an airport; Tumbra has twelve international airports, the locations of which can be found in the above factbook. To get to destinations not provided by airport, high-speed rail that travels up to about 320km/h offers transport to all eleven cities hosting a match, ensuring comfort, speed and reliability to get your players to their matches on time. Within cities, most cities have at least some form of mass rapid transit or light rail that forms the basis of their transport system.

Should you still wish to travel by car, Tumbra uses left-hand drive, and verifiable international licenses are a prerequisite to hire a car. Expressways to each of the major cities do exist, though...trains also exist...and are faster...

IF your nation comes from Esportiva, Tumbra can be reached within four to six hours' flight; if it comes from the regions of Anaia, Atlantian Oceania, Rushmore or Melayu Archipelago, then Tumbra can be reached from anywhere from six to twelve hours' flight; and for countries from outside the five sporting regions, then flights to Tumbra will take twelve hours or more.

All visitors with a valid ticket will be given a visa; for those attending multiple matches, the visa will be extended accordingly. Tickets will be apportioned fairly; 40% to each team, and 10% will be sold to Tumbrans, with the remaining 10% to others. Ticket scalping is, of course, illegal; should one come across such an act of ticket scalping, then call 999 (the number for the Police in Tumbra).

Culture and Laws
The policing in each state is run by the state governments, though they are all run to a unified federal code, which standardises most equipment and techniques. Federal laws will apply here; some of the more important ones are...

  • The age to buy alcohol and tobacco is set at 18 years.
  • The age of consent is 18 years. Prostitution is legal.
  • The status of marijuana, surprisingly for Tumbra, is vague and depends on the state. In general, the further east you go, the more likely it is that marijuana usage is legal. The usage of medical marijuana, however, is legalised throughout all states.
  • The importation of alcohol and tobacco is illegal without declaration; and there are strict limits on the amount. Importation of marijuana is illegal; the same goes for other hard drugs.
  • There is a blanket ban on assault weapons in Tumbra, and no importation is allowed.

The currency of Tumbra is the Tumbran Dollar, with the exchange rate being set at 1 NSD to 1.33 TMD. There is a ten per cent consumption tax on all items; usually it is factored into the price of the item.

Should there be any other questions, please contact VisitTumbra.com.

CITIES AND STADIUMS: IN DEPTH
(Starts with Straton, then goes clockwise in order of the map)

STRATON
The country's capital, Straton sometimes gets an unfair reputation for being overly gray. It's understandable, of course — most federal government buildings are distinguishable by the exact same material used to clad their walls, a sort of gray slate that's given members of the civil service a somewhat dour nickname of "The Grey Men." Regardless, there is fun here if it's looked for; the northern part of the city, which is home to the country's biggest and most prestigious post-1864 university is known for being the main place where fun happens; and, well, failing that, there's always the country's largest observation wheel, standing tall at 169m and pretty much defining the city's skyline. Most institutions of national importance are housed here; including the National Air and Space Museum, co-located with the National Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, National Arts Gallery, and so on. All three branches of government are housed here, too; as well as most monuments to the country's founding fathers, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, commemorating lives lost during the Civil War.

The Eagles' Club (88,000)
The shiny new toy of the Tumbran national team, the Eagles' Club was completed somehow ahead of schedule and below cost, in a miracle to both the taxpayer and authorities. Set in a district of its own, surrounded by a lush park, museum dedicated to Tumbran football history and with train links directly into the heart of the city and to the airport that serves the giant conurbation that is Straton-Serrapince, the Eagles' Club is the most modern stadium of its kind. Clad in a white, colour-changing exterior, the stadium is fully sheltered, has a giant arch over its top and has almost every comfort you would want for a stadium-going experience.

SERRAPINCE
Home to the city's financial industry — which directly means that the city is also known for its debauchery and nightlife (what do you expect when you have a heavy concentration of people in the financial sector in close proximity to each other?), Serrapince is Tumbra's second largest city, but one that's still diverse enough to essentially be an everycity. Of particular interest to tourists would probably be the spiky building known as the Modern Hedgehog, but really is the Serrapince Museum of Modern Art, which serves as the country's largest collection of art produced post-1950. Or, as some more traditional critics would call it, "art". Apart from that, the country's largest Yoshiman Garden is located here, as well as Exhibition House, a giant glass building that was built in 1882 for the country's turn at hosting the Universal Exposition.

Serrapince Park (74,500)
The distinctive yellow pylons provide this stadium with its exterior. Completed in the 1970s as the capstone of Serrapince's project to monopolise the football market in the area, it now provides one of the most intimidating atmospheres in Tumbran football, with the northern stand being home to Serrapince's "ultras". Located in a giant athletics and sporting complex, Serrapince Park forms the main part of the sporting district of the city; and remains the focal point of the club's attempts to dominate the Tumbran football scene.

HESHAM
Despite its size and proximity to Lakewood, Hesham is seen as a relatively laid-back city, more than content to let time pass it by. This is where Clearmont's agricultural industry — carried mostly by wheat — sends its cargo for it to be exported to the world. It's lost a bit of its cultural identity as time's gone on and Lakewood has begun to slowly subsume the city into the amorphous blob that is Greater Lakewood, but locals will never let anyone forget that modern Tumbran football was born here; after all, the meeting between club executives that formed the first-ever league competition was held here. Perhaps unsurprisingly with all that wheat passing through the city, it's got a high amount of breweries; and also the highest number of pubs per capita in Tumbra.

George Bowen Stadium (40,000)
Named after Hesham FC's longest-serving manager who delivered the club its only title and later saved the club from bankruptcy, the Ploughmen's arena with its distinctive bright green seats is a more rectangular effort than most. Distinctive for its bright green pylons that run along the outside of the stadium, it's a bit denser than most stadiums - only having one tier throughout it.

LAKEWOOD
The powerhouse of the South East, Lakewood made its fortunes during the Industrial Revolution (which arrived late on this country's shores — thanks, empire!) due to the burgeoning textile industry that was essentially spawned large waves of migration to the city. It helped that Lakewood was one of the few ports where immigrants to the country were able to be processed, alongside Nantwich and Couno; meaning that the city, more than others, has become more of a cultural melting pot than others. It's grown so large in recent years that the city's suburbs have essentially spilled over into Hesham; the two form what is essentially a giant urban conurbation. Helps that the same international airport serves both cities.

Lakewood City Arena (58,000)
Home to Lakewood United's rivals Lakewood City, the LCA was a more modern construction; only being completed in 2005. It, therefore, looks nicer than Trenton Park; but the diatribes launched against it say that it's a soulless atmosphere. Supports of City point to their attendance records and recent success. It is equipped with all the comforts of a modern stadium, really; and it's located closer to Lakewood's city centre than Trenton Park.

Trenton Park (74,500)
Trenton Park is home to Lakewood United, historically the most successful team in Tumbra. A massive, sprawling colosseum, its differently shaped ends do make it look a bit dated, but gives it a lot of its charm — it began life over a hundred years ago, and was added to, piece by piece. Fans label this stadium "The House That Stephenson Built," referring to the longest-serving manager of Lakewood United, Ben Stephenson. The acoustics here are also excellent, adding to the atmosphere here.

KINGSBURY
The old imperial capital, Kingsbury's Historic Quarter is worth a whole afternoon on its own. The last castle of the Terenbergs (the old imperial family) was located here; nowadays it's a walkthrough museum, which takes a surprisingly neutral tone on the whole royalty thing. One of the wings of the castle has been converted into a public library, which probably shows the amount of attention the royals receive these days. Apart from that, there's the Kingsbury Cathedral, which is the seat of Emberican Christianity and the Archbishop of Kingsbury; though it's probably telling of religion's place in public life that nobody gives a toss about them either.

Fletcher Park (45,000)
In a city full of history, the somewhat more modern-looking Fletcher Park stands out in the country. Located somewhat near the heart of the city, the stadium was recently expanded to fit 45,000 people. That was the latest in the long line of rebuilds, going from a bowl-shaped stadium in a natural valley to a much smaller, almost entirely white stadium with a curving roof; instantly giving the stadium a recognisable facade.

BENCOOLEN
The most colourful (and gayest) of Tumbra's cities, Bencoolen is possibly the most liberal place in the country. Many social movements that eventually grew to become nationwide movements began here; women's liberation in the 60s and gay rights in the 80s can all trace their origins to this city. Most well known for the litany of low-rise, pastel-coloured houses that dot the seafront, as well as the tight, windy high-rise apartment buildings that are so close together it doesn't really feel like a Tumbran city, Bencoolen is different from the rest of the country, and likes to make it known. Try sailing, or watersports; the surfing culture is strong here, and the sport of yachting is mostly concentrated here as well.

Bencoolen City Stadium (55,000)
The smallest of all of Tumbra's twenty-five states, Bencoolen's stadium also includes an athletics track; which, unfortunately, puts distance between the supporters and the players on the pitch. There have, however, been plans mooted to install temporary seating for football matches; though with Tumbra's multiversal sporting ambitions, this may come later, rather than sooner, and if at all.

FONTWELL
The biggest city in the West, Fontwell's an underrated gem of a city; and it's also probably one of the best places in Tumbra to learn about a side of the country's history that sometimes flies under the radar — the Western Republic. The Museum of Western History is located here, and it's chock-full of almost everything the uninitiated would need to know about the unrecognised republic, which fought a guerilla war against the Empire of Tumbra in its waning days, and contributed heavily to the latter's losses in the brutal civil war. Apart from that, why not try looking at the automobile industry? Cheap foreign imports have shrunk the domestic market somewhat these days, but the legacy is still there — Carlton Motors still chugs out variations of the Carlton Cross, the original Tumbran car, and they've got a fantastic museum as well.

Stokers' Park (52,000)
Perhaps one of the most unique Tumbran stadiums, Stokers' Park — officially the WesternOil Power Station, but adopting this as its original name for sponsorship purposes — is built from the remains of a converted factory. It provides one of the most unique stadium-going experiences because of this; Stokers' Park is often referred to as the "smokehouse of Western football". With an exterior of red brick, large glass windows which now hold murals to the Fontwell Rovers, and with chimneys that puff out smoke on matchdays, Stokers' Park presents a uniquely industrial view on Tumbran football and where most of its clubs originated. It does get a little hot on the inside, however.

MILLSBURGH
One of Tumbra's 'forgotten cities', Millsburgh was the home of the now-flagging Tumbran steel industry; it now potters on, though the chemicals industry still goes strong in the north. It's probably the least tourist-friendly city out of the eleven host cities — no dedicated airport, nothing really exciting to do on the surface — but there is the National Museum of Steel here. And bridges. Lots of bridges. The city can get fairly cold, but one thing the city does excel in is the sheer amount of flora in its borders; it's shed most of its dreary reputation gained in the previous century, and the streets are lined with trees and grass. In autumn, it's really pretty. In summer, they do provide a good amount of shade from the sun.

Two Rivers Stadium (42,000)
Accusations that the government intervened to give Millsburgh two group stage matches for political considerations, directly resulting in Columbia (a city on the country's southern coast with an ultramodern 50,000 capacity stadium) missing out on the World Cup have dogged this particular city. But that shouldn't distract from the fact that, the Two Rivers Stadium is a fantastic multi-purpose stadium regardless. Appropriately situated at the fork of two rivers that defines Millsburgh, the stadium is a circular, concrete affair with entry ramps that hug its exterior. It may look dated — certainly a fresh coat of paint on the bare concrete wouldn't go amiss — but the acoustics inside provide a ear-rumbling affair for those lucky enough to visit.

RIDGEWELL
A northern powerhouse, Ridgewell used to be the gateway to the world for Tumbran coal and steel; but with manufacturing fleeing to less expensive countries, and the coal mines closing thanks to The Eighties (and a focus on renewables this century), it's struggled to redefine itself. It's still the largest city in the North, though, and an effort to pivot the city towards tech and research has given it a new lease of life. For tourists, the main attraction in this area is the historic Wyndham Castle, located on the outskirts of the city; it's been stunningly well preserved, and historical demonstrations of medieval life occur every Saturday. Helps that a flea market sets up shop every weekend there too.

Kensington Stadium (46,000)
Built in the 1990s to great fanfare, the Kensington Stadium is a more utilitarian affair than most; simple, steel columns line the stadium's exterior, and a flat, rectangular roof covers spectators. Everything about this stadium seems to be rectangular; the roof, the exterior columns; even the four taller steel spires that provide support for the roofs at each end seem to be extremely rectangular. This makes seating extremely tight, however; and adds a lot to the atmosphere of matches.

NANTWICH
A naval city through and through, Nantwich essentially made its name from two things: shipbuilding and having a naval base on its outskirts. Both industries, perhaps miraculously, survive to the present day; and Nantwich has always had a more gritty, subdued vibe to it. That hasn't stopped it from becoming one of Tumbra's largest cities in the midwest; and it helps that the food here's cheap, as well. For attractions: Deep-dish "Nantwich-style pizza" may seem like a cultural travesty to anyone from outside the state (to say nothing of the Grande Cucinans, who steadfastly refuse to refer to it as "pizza" and prefer the term "pie"), but it's a refreshing take on the ever-popular dish, invented, ironically, by someone from Grande Cucina who couldn't find a proper pizza pan when he first arrived in the city.

Nantwich Stadium (64,000)
Widely renowned for the four helical ramps around each side of the edifice and imposing roof structure with black girders jutting out on each end, the Nantwich Stadium is home to FC Inter Nantwich; and is an imposing home to one of the league's strongest teams. With its four sides rising high above the players, the stands can almost feel like they're closing in on the players. An imposing mental challenge, indeed.

COUNO
Couno is Tumbra's largest city — there's a little bit of something for everyone here. Go for a long walk along the majestic Promenade, complete with statue walks; or head up the hill on the opposite side of the skyline and stadium for a bit of nature. Don't miss the majestic Couno Harbour Bridge, though it's pretty difficult to do that; it's literally everywhere in the city's marketing. Seafood lovers should pay a visit to the Couno Fish Market, where the day's freshest catches are hauled in every morning for hungry tourists and shoppers alike. Further inland, there's Tumbra's biggest amusement park, Galaxy Studios (one of three in the country), complete with rides from your favourite entertainment franchises.

Couno Port Stadium (54,500)
The Couno Port Stadium is distinctive enough that it forms part of the Couno skyline by itself. Located on a wharf, the stadium itself was recently reconstructed in 2016, which expanded its capacity to the 54,500 it is today. Home to the Couno Rangers, with one of the most passionate supporter fanbases in Tumbra, the unique location on the harbourfront provides a unique opportunity for many a football fan. Watch out for the single-tier Red Wall located behind the west goal; that's where you'll see some of the most impressive fan displays in the country.

Wrenchwelt Stadium (42,000)
Wrenchwelt Stadium, located further inland and on the west side of the city, is rather older and run-down; but still has a wonderful atmosphere. Home to West Couno United, the long-suffering west-side local rivals of the more famous and by far more successful Rangers, the stadium might look a bit more run-down than its more modern and refurbished neighbour — especially with its southern stand being disconnected from the other three — but it's still packed with fans to the brim every time the Pilots go onto the field.

MARRAY
Tumbra's top party city, Marray is home to the finest beaches in Tumbra; unusually for the northeast of the country, it's sun, sand and sparkling-clear waters. Marray is where Tumbra's main cruise terminal is; and the city is renowned for its bustling nightlife. Come for the sand; stay for the football.

Oceanside Stadium (44,000)
Opened in 2013 as an example of a modern stadium, Oceanside certainly remains as one of the best-equipped stadiums in Tumbran football. A modern glass-and-steel facade pays tribute to the many players who have passed through and worn the colours of Port Marray. While it's a little way out of the city boundaries — and certainly very far from Marray's old stadium in the middle of the city — the transport links to the stadium ensure that trips to Marray's home ground are smooth, both in and out.

Image
After decades of international dormancy the Kevredigezh Gouvanarchais de Mell-Droad has decided to bring Gouvanarchais football back to the international stage. Football is the by far and wide biggest sport in Gouvanarch, yet there is no benchmark as to its strength. This is about to change. Tactically Gouvanarch is fairly conservative, sticking to a solid 4-4-2, but they are trying to learn from this tournament to potentially gain more tactical flexibility. They managed to get past the group stages of both Wonder Cup and Baptism of Fire, but both times failed to advance in the knock-out stages, after which they pulled back into the shadows.

Cadhoiarn de Rely - 56
Cadhoiarn de Rely interned at the academy of Tikariotian powerhouse Oriannor Mountaineers and has gained valuable insight into the inner workings of a strong team, trying to emulate this for the national team as well. While playing a 4-4-2 formation, he puts great emphasis on pressing the opponent, trying to force them into making mistakes in their own half, so far with varying success.

.................. The Formation ..................

Feel free to pick a starting XI and formation. When in doubt, you may run with a 4-3-3 1-11. Plans are for the team to play pretty narrow - Irithoren doesn't have a lot of flat, grassy areas, so our league plays on fields that are as small as the laws about field dimensions allow - and adventurous and a little individualistic. Maraara and Fiqawit will be the heart of the defence, with some contributions from Akhirunnahr expected. The strength of the team, by very far, lies in the midfield, with Sabar and H Sujaa as probably the most individually talented players of the country. S Sujaa will be given free reign up front - the best striker in Irithoren though grizzled fans of Irithoreni football will never pass up the chance to say that the last good striker retired 30 years ago.

.................. The Jersey ..................

We play in dark green with a light trim. Our away jersey is the reverse: the light colour for most of the kit but with a dark green trim, numbers, etcetera.

.................. The Country ..................

We're a tiny country on a rocky outcropping/cape with a tad over 150 000 people.

Most of us live in a long, stretched out town along the coast, which also functions as our capital, named Dhidiyah. Think narrow paved streets, warm summer afternoons/evenings, pot plant gardens along stucco and stone houses, lots of yellowish tones, and plenty of cats that must be someone's but they're just vibing on the warm stones (OOC: 'lofi girl' aesthetics).

Geographically, the inland is used for growing mediterranean crops like olives (and some coffee and tea) on small-scale farms. The town of Tabuhsa - just outside Dhidiyah - works as a local marketplace for most of our agricultural goods.

We're laid-back, but with a competitive edge, much like 'parent nation' Ko-oren. Irithoren has taken the meritocratic elements but we kept our own 'village head'-system, so local issues are sorted on a very small scale under the 'most apt' (and usually quite old) village head. National issues are solved by a surprisingly modern (but tiny) cabinet under a prime minister (Zeina Nayla Fizairdah).

Our other towns include Qawit, smack dab in the middle of the country with a small industrial sector, and Zairdah, on the border to the mainland. Around Dhidiyah we don't just find Tabuhsa, but also Hurasan, which is a separate coastal town that just barely doesn't touch the capital.

We aligned ourselves with Ko-oren a while ago, but we recently intensified those ties, fearing interference by larger Esportivan nations (read: Tumbra invading the northlands).

.................. The League ..................

The league (Al-Dawri Al-Irithoreni Likurat Al-Qadam or Irithoreni Football League) is an amateur league that includes all ten clubs in Irithoren. Four from the capital of Dhidiyah, one each from satellite towns Hurasan and Tabuhsa, a further three from industrial centre Qawit, and one from border town Zairdah. The ten clubs of the Irithoreni League.

IC Information:
A long, long time ago, four boatloads of intrepid Rushmori explorers set sail from the city-state of Sant'Elia in search of a new land of their own on which to start a new egalitarian society based on the founding principles of truth, knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. With ambitions of landing somewhere in The Goose Coast, they instead got very, very lost somewhere out at sea, and almost lost their minds whilst trapped in some windless doldrums, well away from trade winds, sightings of land, or any sort of possible salvation.

With things looking bleak and the most learned passengers on board consulted and unable to work out the best course of action, it was left to a lowly swab who dabbled in the occult to perform a last gasp ritual on the deck of the smallest ship using two flaming magnesium torches, an armillary sphere, the light of the full moon, and a chicken liver.

To everyone's surprise, not least the chicken's, the goddess Athena answered their desperate call.

Towing the ships to the safety of dry land, the voyagers found themselves in a strange new land at the mouth of a slender river. Naming the river after their saviour, Athena, they proceeded to found their cities on either side of its mouth and named them after the regions of Sant'Elia they had originally come from; Ares, and Penthesilea. A small island in the middle of the River Athena was named Asterios after the swab whose actions led them to safety, and in honour of their original ambitions to seek truth, knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, each city founded two universities - named for the boats that kept them on their journey; Argo and Paralus in Ares, and Odyssey and Salaminia in Penthesilea.

Centuries later, a great deal has changed: their original home Sant'Elia was absorbed into and became the capital city of Oasirica, now known as Ossidiacqua due to... well, that's a whole other story. The universities and colleges of Argo and Paralus became so large and so intertwined in their cooperation that they merged, as did Odyssey and Salaminia on the other side of the Athena. The language and customs of the city-states evolved, but as the regional powers of Esportiva were founded and rose to power and influence all around them, the academics of the city-states delved ever deeper into their studies and allowed the multiverse to pass them by.

Eventually, the universities grew so large and powerful that they quite literally became the city-states. Merged into one single entity, the Combined Universities of Ares-y-Penthesilea became an almost unmanageable behemoth of educational and directorial might, and when it became evident that the Senate of Ares-y-Penthesilea wasn't doing anything that the University Leadership wasn't already doing, they simply dissolved. Now, all property is owned by the universities; farms exist only for the study of agricultural and veterinary sciences with their produce feeding the Acadaemians, the forges produce material for use in experimental labs, construction and maintenance is undertaken by a wing of special facilities managers, the buyers and investments offices are tasked with procuring anything the universities can't create for themselves, all housing and accommodation is owned and managed centrally by the Dormitories Department, all transport is run by the Porters, and security forces are tasked with protecting the boundaries of the universities (keep off the grass, please), which, happen now to be the boundaries of the city-states.

In short, all functions of daily life are now run by either a college, faculty, department, society, or support service of the university, which is all managed from the administrative nightmare known as the Central Quad, located on Asterios Island. The River Athena has now been bridged so many times that you can walk for hours along its supposed banks without seeing so much as a glimpse of water, a fact that has has greatly displeased the resident waterfowl. They have taken to nesting amongst the endless cloisters and columns as a result, and can usually be found scaring some bearded professor away from a drinking fountain.

Time and space take on a twisted sense of realism and continuity within the density of sandstone, marble, scrolls, and test tubes that make up the city-states, and things aren't always quite what they seem as a result. To become a member of the Combined Universities is to become an Acadaemian of Ares-y-Penthesilea, and many's the Esportivan undergraduate who has travelled to the city-states in order to start their academic career amongst the densest accumulation of libraries in the region, only to return home decades later a hairier, more frantic individual, who spends their days talking about being lost in shining hallways and falling foul of the librarian...

The idea of a national football team has been broached in the past, with some ill-advised physical activity enthusiast essentially press-ganging the students and staff of the Combined Universities into his team. This time around however, well... actually things are pretty similar. Although at least this time everyone on the roster below is here by choice. With the notable exception of two, each of them have represented their school or department in the fiercely-contested-by-those-who-know-it-exists CUAyP Sporting Societies Inter-Collegiate Football League, and were picked out by the management as a player of note.

So, without further ado; the Accies.

For Athena's sake, avoid library fines...

MANAGER
Aristotle Constantinides - Sporting Society, 56
As president of the Sporting Society, Constantinides has the unenviable job of overseeing a sporting organisation that straddles countless sports, two entire city-states, and an endless campaign to get people to pay their gym membership fees on time. With the idea from the University Senate to entre the Campionato Esportiva for the first time in several generations, it fell upon Constantinides to pick the management team that would put the plan into action. Much to everyone's surprise, he chose himself, if only to give himself something of a holiday, apparently.

Scouring the Inter-Collegiate league for talent, he offered the chance of a trip to Tumbra to twenty-three lucky players who managed to impress him. Then, when it became apparent that Athena and The Minotaur were coming whether he liked it or not, quickly revised that to nine lucky players. You don't need subs when Athena can do what she does, apparently.

His tactical style is well-researched, as you would expect, and he certainly draws a mean whiteboard diagram. However, in practise, games usually end up being no more sophisticated as pointing either Athena or The Minotaur at the opposition, depending on which end the action is taking place in.

Still, compared to board meetings, this should be a doddle.

PLAYERS:
GOALKEEPER
Dr. Kilian Helmatten-Schiller - School of Archaeology, 31 [Cap Nord]
One of the many international students who came and never really left, Helmatten-Schiller has spent much of the last edcade of his life flitting between the city-states and his home nation of Cap Nord, doing research and undergoing digs and field research. About as well known as archaeologists can be, he is also a rather nifty little goalkeeper, and has kept many a clean sheet for his School team during his time on campus. There is always the off-chance he might get bored and start conducting some sitework in the six-yard-box during the ninety minutes, so make sure to look before you leap. Particularly from corners.

SWEEPER
The Minotaur - Library Services, Ageless [Mythic Beast]
Half-man. Half-bull. All-bastard. If there's one thing this chief librarian hates more than students who don't return their books on time, its attackers who get past the defence. Be warned. There is nothing more he loves than going on a rampage and breaking some legs - or skulls - and only manages to avoid yellow and red cards thanks mainly to Athena's powers of instant healing preventing the opposition from complaining too much. That, or the referee is too scared to challenge him. Affectionately known as 'Minnie' by teammates, The Minotaur is banned from competing in the Inter-Collegiate Leagues because Athena isn't normally there to fix things, so he has some frustrations to work out on your players' shins.

LEFT BACK
Spiro Vascotis - School of Extra-Terrestrial Aquatic Robotics, 17
Child prodigy Spiro is still searching for that special something that will make him whole. Offered a place at the tender age of just twelve, the youngest undergraduate since Stavros 'Baby-Faced' Miskoulis turned out to be just that, Spiro has flitted from department to department since, and has been so far unable to live up to the pressure that was foist upon him at such a young age. There can be no doubt of his academic talents - he is the founder and only member of his current incredibly specialised department - but his sticking power leaves something to be desired. His colleagues at his 'parent' school of Astronomy suggested he join their department team, and so far it seems to have given him some much-needed willpower. Remains to be seen if he came keep his attention on one thing for long enough to last an entire tournament, but we'll see I guess.

CENTRE BACK
Anthimos Zannellis - Porters, 31
Actually competent, Anthimos is the captain and star centre-back for the team that finished as runners-up in the latest Inter-Collegiate tournament. Can usually be found humping packing cases in and out of the loading bay for the School of Architectural Chemistry, one of the departments most prone to exhibiting abroad, and has the physique to match. Is therefore rather insecure with the hulking presence of The Minotaur behind him, and will likely spend much of the match trying to overcompensate.

CENTRE BACK
Prof. Avgi Dimitrieli - School of Bovine Aerodynamics, 64
Do you long to see a cow fly? Professor Dimitrieli does. Having spent most of her life perfecting the means of artificial propulsion that would be necessary for such a feat, she now uses a modified version of the technology to get herself around the football pitch. You are unlikely to beat her in an aerial battle, but her concentration will lapse should she spot any planes of similar in the sky above the stadium whilst she stops to take notes on what she observes.

RIGHT BACK
Dr. Marianna Romanide - School of Mycology, 27
Well you can stop with the 'fun-gi' jokes right now. First of all, 'Doc Maz' has heard them all, and most importantly, she's not a guy she's a gal. That does of course leave the door open for 'fun-gal' jokes but, a) ew, and b) see point one. Having passed her PhD last year, Marianna is keen to both regain her fitness (having spend the best part of the last three years stuck in either the library or the lab) and show off her new-found knowledge. So, if you find your left-wingers bogged down in rows of fungi and fertilisers, don't say you weren't warned.

LEFT WING
Prof. Alice Innes - School of Political Philosophy, 38 [The Licentian Isles]
Aspiring head of department and fervent communist, Alice Innes came to the city-states as an undergraduate and never left, finding that her proclivity for radical left-wing politics worked far better within the walls of a university than out in the real world (zzzzzing!). Accidentally originated the role of inverted winger in the city-states by refusing to play on the right-wing despite being right footed, and is seen as something of a tactical innovator as a result. She's pretended this was a deliberate decision ever since. She's constantly disappointed by the political apathy of the current crop of undergrads, so might well try to convert your players or the crowd during the game. Be warned; she carries pamphlets.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD
Prof. Ioanna Antonouli - School of Sporting Ethics, 51
Surprisingly spry, Ioanna has never met a sport she couldn't ponder or a pastime on which she couldn't pontificate. Just as likely to try and beat your midfield in a high-press as she is trying to debate them into submission, her main weakness is a tendency to overthink things. Usually, in footballing situations, this would mean being caught in two minds and ultimately picking neither the right pass or the wrong pass, simply losing possession instead. In Ioanna's case however, overthinking means literally that, and she is often found wandering the centre-circle trying to decide whether to kick the ball would be the right thing to do.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD
Andromeda Fonzarelli - School of Journalism, 20
Enthusiastic pipsqueak Andromeda is knee-high to a grasshopper and twice as energetic, and will be constantly running around trying to ascertain your players' motivation for what they're doing. As well as trying to graduate her class with the first class honours her ancient Oasirican family name demands of her, she is also the editor-in-chief and chief reporter for the student faculty's third biggest newspaper, The Rag, and will think nothing of trying to conduct interviews for her match reports mid-game if she has to.

RIGHT WING
Dr. Marios Stamakos - Facilities Management, 40
Bridge specialist Marios can usually be seen measuring and monitoring the give and sway in the many, many bridges over the River Athena. Originally from the School of Civil Engineering, he eventually found his talents in stone and masonry tectonics were most applicable to the city-states he already lived in, and so he took a sideways step from academia into management. Civil Engineering's loss was FM's gain, as his oddly excellent dead-ball ability led him to being the top assist maker in the Inter-Collegiate league last season.

STRIKER
Athena - God of Wisdom, Immortal [Avatar]
With the overdue return of the Accies to international competition, the goddess to whom the Combined Universities are dedicated has popped down for another shot at terrorising the defences of Esportiva. Quite literally, if she chooses. Yes, Athena is back to say hello. She's all-powerful, and so long as your permissions allow it I will be having fun with that aspect of things. She might manifest a memory of intense fear into your defenders, allowing her to waltz through, or she might remove your strikers' legs at a crucial point to prevent a goal from being scored. She's lethal when crossed, but is also lethal when being crossed to, and for the most part she will choose to play within the rules, y'know, relatively speaking... just to test herself against mortals. The rest of the team might be the best the city-states have to offer, but they're far from professional footballers, so as by far and away our best actual player of the ball (rather than the person), expect her to score most of our goals and take all of our set pieces. Assuming, that is, she's not otherwise occupied fixing the damage inflicted to your players by The Minotaur. Which she often is.

*Just bear in mind that Athena is the avatar and physical manifestation of an actual deity, and so possesses limitless powers. Accordingly, she will never be injured for longer than it takes her to decide not to be, and can bring my other players back to full fitness, or even back to life, with barely a moments thought. That is, when she isn't spending all her time fixing the broken bones inevitably inflicted to your players by The Minotaur... apologies in advance for those.

**Unless you permissions prevent it, I will be Godmodding as much as I can feasibly manage, with The Minotaur running wild, Athena making a mockery of the laws of physics, and players getting lost in thought or otherwise engaging your players in on-the-spot field research.

Tactics
Formation: 4-4-2
Style Modifier: +1.25

As the number of Esportivan Darmenis playing in Darmen's top flight increases, the team's tactics have become slightly more complex than the old direct long ball approach. The team still relies largely on counter-attacking, but the midfield has grown in its ability to engage in longer periods of possession with quick passing that is so prevalent in the mainland.

Team Roles
Captain: Gruffydd Kitchen
Vice-Captain: Junior Wheeler
Left Corner: Alban Rogerson
Right Corner: Rorie Symonds

Story

It is hard to believe but the Whalers arrive in Tumbra for their fourth Campionato Esportiva already. And what a journey it has been so far. They emerged under Forseth with whom they, despite taking their first steps, won a BoF bronze medal and got an impressive 61.6% point percentage. The few losses came more often than not against sides featuring in the World Cup. As such, results could not be used as the excuse to give the charismatic and outspoken Forseth the boot but ‘differences concerning the way forward’ were used to part ways. A few days later, in silence, Robert McEather was installed as the new manager of the national team.

A surprise as his history only features a few stints in the lower leagues. But, possibly more importantly, he has an NUP member card. Needless to say that the takeover of the latter party and the installation of a puppet king had its impact on the foundations of society. The newcomer was shunned by the fans for his lack of knowledge and struggled to handle the stars in his selection, not in the least youngsters Simon Carstensen and Jorgen Bjerkness. After a full cycle, an exhausted McEather threw the towel. The load of the position had been too much to carry, the narrative reads, but he signed off with a 68.1% scorecard, a stunning Campionato silver and coming within goal difference of a WC play-off, so history might be kinder on Robert McEather.

The length of the decision making by the FA for a successor led to speculation: all major names of the league made an appearance in the press but most pointed to Van Nooten, a composed and sympathetic fellow without a lot of first-team experience but with a good connection with the squad, having been the assistant under Forseth and McEather. But Van Nooten remained in that role as the FA landed on 56-year old Lozhoan Pazron Finchley. A surprise to the Capnordic fans, but the former center-back earned his stripes with Langhan Town, Lozho U21 and Protchen United. Despite winning prizes as player and coach with the latter, Finchley was disposed unceremoniously there: his move abroad was inspired by a hunger to prove them wrong.

As the results are already on the right track, it suits that Finchley starts from a similar game plan as his predecessors: 4-3-3. But contrary to those before him, there will be a high pressing, giving whole new tasks to the offensive players and even more importance to the energetic wingbacks. A known issue for Cap Nord is the depth of the squad, but Finchley’s U21 experience stimulated him to give chances to a new wave of players, thank some veterans for their service and get more rotation in the squad. The Cup of Harmony, in which the football was hopeful if not for the final game collapse against Aleirave, showed that Finchley has a plan and the dressing room on his side.

The Campionato confirmed this, but unexpected losses against Racing and Natanians & Nosts made clear that the room for error is limited: more consistency, both across and within a game, is needed. During the World Cup, the job of Finchley has been on the line a few times as the results were mixed: decent games were swapped with lacklustre performances, seeing Cap Nord collapse in the second half. But a string of unexpected triumphs against Saint Eleanor, Brenecia and Polar Islandstates kept the Lozhoan in the saddle and in a mind-boggling finish, Cap Nord jumped from 6th to 3rd on the final MD to clinch a play-off spot. In those play-offs, Cassadaigua proved far too strong, but it offered some consolation to reach the CoH knock-outs for the first time: Nyowani Kitara was too much to handle. If consistency can be found, this is a spectacular team.

Selection

.1 Johannes Marzinn Cleorough [SYL] 27 ( 60 caps)
12 Thom McEnroy Fallwich United 26 ( 0 caps)
13 Alisha Sawyer Clachonoch Rovers 28 ( 0 caps)

Between the stakes, it is Johannes Marzinn who cemented his position, proving his value by guiding Cleorough to an unanticipated IFCF finish. Over the years, the rather introverted Toucans' goalie grew in leadership and his Cup of Harmony game against Valentine Z showed that ‘Clutch’ Marzinn is the right man for the job. When fit, he is a lock for the line-up. Former reserve goalie and veteran Siel Leuwert was left at home by Finchley so the back-ups are completely untested with the NT, but therefore not without merit. There is Thom McEnroy who lives up to the expectations at Fallwich. The phlegmatic redhead possesses a good balance between his skills on the line and footballing intuition: his first cap is overdue. Third in line is Alisha Sawyer, a late bloomer and a bit short but very energetic in the box.

.2 Troels Poulsen IFK Liverpool Utd. [DAR] 29 ( 69 caps/ 6 goals)
3 Glenn Pedersen Sandfjell Fotball 30 ( 7 caps)
4 Luuk Vennema Real Alegria [CAD] 28 ( 70 caps/ 1 goal )
5 Erik Brymsaeter Sporting Noordende 33 (102 caps/ 8 goals)
14 Iver Askelund Pyathora Mariners [TKT] 27 ( 1 cap )
15 Pat O’Sullivan Crester Wanderers 27 ( 9 caps)
18 Siebe Moersleutel Griffin Isles Utd. [PTR] 23 ( 10 caps)
25 Torill Vinquist Sandfjell Fotball 21 ( 0 caps)

The back four that had been the quiet engine behind the Campionato upset is no longer as 37-year old Patrick van Hilvaren retired from the National Team after over a hundred caps. It rips the heart out of the once so strong defensive line, which worries football fans all across the peninsula. In theory, his successor should have been Luuk Vennema: a commanding player with good heading and style but there is an insecurity over him. Relegating with Columbia City did not help to alleviate that. Vennema tries to rekindle his career in Cardenao, hoping to become that defense leader after all. He is joined by Glenn Pedersen whose main strength is a distinct lack of flaws. The Sandfjell player is reliable and decent in about every aspect of the defensive toolbox, but equally unspectacular. Still, his lack of gaffes could ensure some stability in the back. Two alternatives made the selection: Iver Askelund recently jumped up to the TPL and as such made quick progression, at 24 he still acted in the second tier. A laid back character but a physically impressive back. Youngster Vinquist is still working for a starting spot with Fotball but her quick progression inspired Finchley to bring her on board early. She's the real deal, but still green and is mainly here due to the lack of alternatives.

The wings, so crucial in this system, are a cause of worry as well as the lack of depth is a major issue, but the starters are highly valued. Left wing, ‘Pencil’ Brymsaeter (after his feet, build, mustache and prose) remains a great source for attacking intentions. The Sporting Noordende man looks more like a violinist than a football player. Nonetheless, he is without remorse and can pick up a goal here or there. His artistic vibe causes some question marks among the staunchly right-wing government but the lack of alternatives keeps him firmly on board. Opposite man Troels Poulsen, on the other hand, actively contributed to the ‘popular uprising/military coup’ (pending on whose word you take for it). But Poulsen is not just a political pawn and possesses style and energy in abundance: watch his rushes. As he can take a card, finding back-up for him was necessary but difficult. Out of options domestically for wingbacks, it was even contemplated whether Brenecian Athame Caulker already qualified for a passport. In the end, the choice fell on O’Sullivan. Crester’s Pat is fast and has a good cross, but remains fluky in positioning. On the left, young talent Siebe Moersleutel is a hidden gem: his move to Patriotlandia proved to be a positive step on an interesting trajectory and the follow-up for Brymsaeter seems assured.

.6 Jody Barnes Cleorough [SYL] 24 ( 18 caps)
8 Theodore Bissett Sielhafen 1.FC 29 ( 71 caps/ 5 goals)
10 Simon Carstensen Sandfjell Fotball 24 ( 71 caps/14 goals)
16 Kenneth Breuker Fallwich United 33 ( 34 caps)
17 Trevor Barrington Sporting Noordeinde 29 ( 24 caps/ 2 goals)
20 Hella Veensma Pesfield Trees [SYL] 27 ( 45 caps/ 5 goals)
24 Emilie Gronseth Draiewikum Boys 26 ( 2 caps)
26 Maximilian Dahl Sporting Noordende 23 ( 5 caps)

No more Carl Worbe in the selection. The immensely boring but incredibly useful defensive midfielder fell out with Finchley and was kindly suggested to sod off. As a result, the starting midfield trio moves further away from the traditional archetypes of the breaker, the runner and the creative type. In a way, all three are number eights for their day-time teams. But Finchley does note how their shared skills allow Cap Nord to play forward and put pressure on the opposition. It can open a can of worms against shrewd, defensive sides, but as the automatisms improve, those holes should be fewer and further between. Theodor Bissett used to struggle to make the line-up but became a mainstay under Finchley as box-to-box: he is a man with energy, stamina and more than decent feet. If he can employ those at the right time, he is a potential world beater. By his side, Jody Barnes made good use of her days in Sylestone to take the next step. Jody brings a bit more grit, a ton of energy and an amazing 360 vision which makes you forget about the occasional bad touch. However, by all standards, Carstensen remains the lynchpin for the Whalers. The Sandfjell midfielder already became the playmaker of this top-three side at seventeen and continues to show leadership, even if he has a sharp edge: the spotlights caught a few incidents. He is rather industrious for his role, with excellent vision and passing. The only thing missing from his game might be a few more goals.

Carstensen can also appear a bit lower down the field, contrary to his back-up Hella Veensma who combines energy with insight and short turns. Both in Waalterzee, Sielhafen and Pesfield, she has shown continuous growth and she might be the most used reserve in the squad as she always brings something different to a Cap Nord game. The other offensive option 'Max' Dahl was and is a high-potential but needs to lose a bit of naivety to carry a national team. Can he add a spark in the final minutes? Definitely, both with a pass and an infiltration. In difficult games, Finchley might prefer the unconventional Breuker over Barnes: the United man shows no mercy and is notorious for bullying an opposing playmaker out of the game. Or a chance can go to up-and-coming Emilie Gronseth who executes tasks efficiently yet with a certain flair: 97+% pass completion style. Rounding up the set of midfielders is Trevor Barrington who copies the style of Bissett, with a bit less stamina but slightly better feet. It is clear, Finchley can pick his accents with this section of the line-up.

.7 Jorgen Bjerkness Fort Viljan North. [TIK] 23 ( 57 caps/15 goals)
9 Till Myrrheim Crimsonhawke FC [TKT] 29 (105 caps/61 goals)
11 Rohan Williams Corinth. No Longer [NPH] 30 ( 99 caps/33 goals)
19 Daniel Clark Sporting Noordende 26 ( 56 caps/13 goals)
21 Gunvor Tofte Lydholm Forened 22 ( 1 cap)
22 Moussa Sangaré Lhor [CMT] 28 ( 29 caps/ 2 goals)
23 Elliott Jackson Norreborg 59 29 ( 13 caps/ 3 goals)

It is a peculiar attacking trio as Finchley clearly has a different target here: one big man, two smaller players who attack the defensive line with the sting of a bee, without being full blooded wingers. Up front, one finds Till Myrrheim, a likable two meters of unfiltered firepower, with a babyface on top. A gentle giant outside the game, Myrrheim shuns no duel and weighs on an opposing defense. The numbers speak for itself, if you let the Sandfjell ace come anywhere near the box, you are putting yourself in grave danger. He came off the toughest year in his career but hopes to refind the energy in Crimsonhawke. Despite ‘Till Torrheim’ being the national topscorer, the player that everyone on the playing ground wants to be is Rohan Williams. After all, he is in all aspects a beautiful footballer. Makes the covers of the sports section with his dribbles, of the newspapers with his podcast and of the tabloids with his flirts and cars. This striker drifts between the wing and the box and somehow only scores marvelous goals. His time in Nephara added a bit more seriousness out of bounds and improved efficiency on the pitch.

Under Finchley, Jorgen Bjerkness rounds up the attacking trio. Originally an attacking midfielder, the talented 'ZoomZoom' (after a brand of spinning tops) will be making use of the spaces between defenders and midfielders with his movement and great first touch. You can also expect minutes for ‘Danny’ Clark, who can’t get into the line-up despite consistently good performances. A lanky forward who scores with ease, Clark possesses the football IQ to pop up where he is needed. The Noordende star can be a sole striker, but also operate close to Myrrheim, living off the balls that get pumped into that direction. The remaining options are best characterized as role players. If Cap Nord finds themselves pinned to their own half, they can throw in lightning bolt Sangaré, who can run a ball out of bounds but will wreak havoc on the opposition. ‘The Jacker’ Jackson operates as the back-up for Myrrheim: his lack in style gets made up for in goals and work rate. Ideal for when pumping balls in the box is the only road left. Young kid Tofte showed she's got a wider variety of skills than just being really fast with Lydholm and should earn more moments in the national shirt. She's more goal oriented than most players in her style.

THE TUMBRAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
The Black Eagles

Image

The Tumbran National Football Team is Tumbra's main representative in all association football competitions for national associations. Making its debut at the 87th World Cup Qualifiers, the team currently ranks 9th in the world. The team is controlled by the Tumbran Football Federation, which is also the governing body of football in Tumbra. Also known as the Black Eagles, or affectionately the Eagles, the team competes in the World Cup and its related competitions. The team also participates in the Campionato Esportiva, also sends teams to the Di Bradini Cup for Under-21s, and the Under-18 World Cup. The team have won the 51st edition of the former tournament and the 13th edition of the latter tournament; which has led to a keen emphasis on bleeding youth into the national team set-up early. With a loyal travelling contingent of supporters known as the Black Army, the Tumbran national team's support will be on display throughout this tournament, with lots of tifos and loud cheers expected throughout matches.

LOZHO FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION presents...

The Lozhoan National Football Team!

A History of Lozhoan Football

Association football is one of the most popular sports in Lozho. During a daily five minute factory break one day, Lozhoan workers decided to kick a leftover bottle of Sozha Soda around in an improvisation of football. The bosses of Ghezhan Pens and Paper Inc. were so impressed that they decided to establish the first football club in Lozho, Ghezhan Pens and Paper FC, later shortened to Ghezhan City. The Lozho Championship (since renamed) Lozho First Division was later established, all between teams that had been established by factory bosses. Lozhoan football is a very lucrative venture, but most players play out of love, and thus are more than willing to sign four year contracts for a few Lozhons a month.

After a successful foray into the World Cup cycle, which whilst ended with a demolishing in the Cup of Harmony group stages, has created a foundation for manager Brett Zimberg to work on. With Lozho about to enter their fourth ever Campionato Esportiva, glory is just at arm's reach.

The Coaching Team

Head Coach: Brett Zimberg
Assistant Coach: Jaxueline Plattenhardt

Brett Zimberg was formerly a PE teacher in a Shezhen high school, until his teams became so good he had to encourage them to stop scoring too many goals and humiliating opposition. A manager who can harness the great potential of this Lozhoan squad, an exciting project awaits Pelicans fans.

Starting XI

Goalkeeper: Bonzo De Jong, 31

The current goalkeeper for Gosport Pelicans, De Jong has had a long and esteemed career. Starting his career as a Pelican mascot holding up a sign to fast food restaurants, De Jong quickly rose up the ranks with his signature jumping technique. Despite being only one metre tall, De Jong can jump to anywhere in the goal and make a save, earning the nickname 'Bonzo the Guy Who Can Jump Really Far and High Which Saves Shots on Target'.

Left Full Back: Fazj Srejzjajk, 23

This fast-paced left wingback has been making waves ever since her debut for Langhan Town two years ago. Having recently been signed by Lozhoan titans Protchen United for a lucrative deal, Srejzjajk is looking to make her impact on the international stage as well. Her speed makes her a dangerous wingback who can strike opponents on the counter.

Left Centre Back: Zoufal Cerezaki, 25

With stellar performances at the club level, Zoufal Cerezaki's inclusion over Penny Butterfield was a no-brainer. Cerezaki's hard man persona and slide tackles strikes fear into the hearts or his opponents.

Right Centre Back: Romulus, 25

In red-hot form, Romulus has been a key side in Shezhen Athletic this season. His former manager at club level clearly has faith that his defensive stability will help to steady this leaky Lozhoan ship.

Right Full Back: Cartzon Zohzo, 21

Another young wingback, Zohzo and Srejzjajk make up what's called 'Lozho's Finest Pair of Wings: Sponsored by Lozho's Finest Pair of Wings Fast Food Inc.'. While he is one of the younger members on the team, Zohzo is proving his worth with his outings at the Gosport Pelicans, having broken into the team as a teenager. He has the potential to be amongst the all time greats.

Left Midfielder: Henry Blyth, 29

The captain of the team, Blyth has both experience and a passion to improve. A one club man for Shezhen Athletic, Blyth has developed a reputation for his strong leadership and passing skills. He's also an avid online gamer, and regularly plays Valorant with his teammate Obamovich, developing his skills as a captain by strengthening his vocal cords when he has to insult "useless teammates".

Central Midfielder: Marc Benson, 26

A box-to-box midfielder for Shezhen Athletic, Benson seems to have unlimited stamina. He dominates the middle of the park and helps to break up attacks and start counters, an essential piece of Zimberg's system.

Right Midfielder: Pazron Droozle, 27

Nicknamed "The Droozler", Droozle is known for his "droozling" skills, or in layman's terms "dribbling". Droozle can droozle a ball all around the pitch in an exhilarating display of end-to-end football. Rumour has it there's no defender he hasn't droozled past.

Left Winger: Fatrouza Smith, 22

Fatrouza Smith may come from a wealthy family of the Smith Textbooks and Notebooks and Notepads Company wealth, but he's a golden boy on and off the pitch. Speedy, crossy, and shooty, this winger can get a ball in the box any time of the day, no questions asked.

Right Winger: Zed Zoan, 31

A pacey right winger, Zed Zoan runs up and down the flanks of the pitch in record time. Whilst his crossing may have room for improvement, he makes it up with his ability to cut deep into the opposition boxes to attempt long shots.

Striker: Paxton Obamovich, 29

A refugee from West Barack and East Obama fleeing persecution for his love of football, Paxton Obamovich has taken up citizenship in Lozho and has already been banging in the goals. A target man that always makes the ball connect with his head, he just needs to jump a little bit and boom! You've conceded again. Yes, there are a lot of people who can head well on our team.

Petroz: Yo.

Goodwin: Yo.

Petroz: So, Dod Rava, Natanians and Nosts and Damukini. A pretty solid group of opponents, don't you think?

Goodwin: Don't care.

Petroz: Yeah so- what?

Goodwin: I literally don't care.

Petroz: How could you say such a thing, Goodwin! You know how important football means to me!

Goodwin: Football is a load of bollocks anyway. Our country is absolute crap at it. It's all chaos and disaster over here. Domestic leagues suspended for years due to corruption. Useless lavosh stadiums taking up land plots and remaining unused, except as targets for vandalism. Our team putting in lacklustre, below the bare minimum performances in tournaments. Come on, when has this team ever delivered? When have we, as a country, ever delivered in football? No one's interested in the game anymore. Everyone just wants the results and their money. It's about the material gain. And YOU expect me to care now? For all I know, I'm going to sleep just as safe and sound as ever even if we get thrashed 9-0 by our opponents. Now, if you excuse me, I have to get back to my Instagram moderation job. Lunch break doesn't last forever.

Petroz: That's a very hurtful thing to say, Goodwin. I believe that this year is our year. Sure, we've got the same coaches and players and... okay, it's pretty similar. But we have a chance. The defending champions from The Tumbran Northlands aren't participating! That's a great start for us.

Goodwin: Whatever, man.

Erin Camden has made an exceptional first impression, salvaging a floundering qualifying campaign before dragging Brenecia kicking and screaming to the World Cup quarterfinals, re-establishing them as among the world's semi-elite. But there's a paucity of new talent coming through... and Camden is not exactly known for blooding youth. Can they really keep it up, or was that just a fluke?

Maybe it was just a fluke.

First Team and Tactics
Image
Raised on lumpy grass pitches, waterlogged and potholed, Brenecian footballers tend to grow physical, disciplined and tough to break down, and this iteration of the national pool is no exception. The Patriots are an athletic, muscular side with plenty of pace and power, with two unpredictable, top-class wingers in Byrne and Wake who are given plenty of freedom so long as they do their work in pressing high. Camden is a loyalist at heart and rarely differs from the blueprint, but knows when the time is right to shake things up tactically or in terms of personnel, and her defensive drilling is exceptional.

Too predictable in the old 4-4-2, Brenecia have shifted to a front three in order to let the creative talent of Lienke Covolan back into the side, a sullen and bitter Nephar who disliked former manager Wright personally but responds well to Camden and to her other Nepharan brethren (Kearney, Jeong and Alderwood). This is a physical Brenecia side but, Lofthouse and the centre-halves aside, not an overly tall one; they'll look to exploit pace on the counter more than slinging in high balls. They aren't interested in holding onto possession, and are more comfortable letting the opposition overreach and taking advantage.

Common Substitutes
- Lofthouse will often replace Stokes late in games, with an advantage in height and raw physicality; she may even start when Brenecia expect to have almost none of the ball, against teams like Farfadillis
- Alternatively, if ahead, Murdoch will replace Stokes to make a nuisance of himself and protect the lead
- Skaidrina Briggs will often be booked, and Cathal Reventas will come on where necessary to help shore up the defence.
- The wingers have to do a lot of running, so Alderwood and Wakering, while some degree below the standards of their replacements, will be common sights late in games.
- Overweight and one-footed, Rourke will frequently be swapped out for Meskela, the significantly more dynamic Kearney, or perhaps Sitko if Brenecia just need to keep the ball

Staff
Manager - Erin Camden - Age 64
Asst. Manager - Hendry Jackson - Age 55

A midfielder of some quality, Camden earned 93 caps for Brenecia and captained them in her playing days, but has earned most of her renown as one of world football's most serial winners, first with Northern Union and then with AFC Treason. She builds dynasties through discipline, rigidity, experience and cynicism, and it's a common sight for her former players to profess an undying loyalty to her. She's turned down the Patriots job plenty of times in the past, but now, at 61, she recognises the time is right.

Goalkeepers
1 - GK - Cessair Meade (Image Rammsissil) - Age 26 - 21 caps, 7 clean sheets
Tall, athletic and reliable, Meade might be the pick of the slim bunch of up-and-coming Brenecian stoppers. Seeing a neverending wave of hotshot foreign goalkeepers arrive at Kingsgrove, she felt she had to leave to make a name for herself, but the club's still left its mark on her as a high-sweeping shot-stopper with excellent distribution.

12 - GK - Olwyn Fife (Image North Hall) - Age 27 - Uncapped
A taciturn, reliable goalkeeper, far below the level of Brenecia's genuine stars but at least providing a degree of stability behind a defence that's badly needed it. She'll make the saves expected of her.

20 - GK - Michi Novikovas (Image Marque) - Age 24 - Uncapped
An emerging prospect in goal with good reflexes and exceptional distribution. But Novikovas is resoundingly unlikely to see the pitch, and their arrival is, as much as anything, symbolic.

Defenders
2 - RB - Tricia Sheen (Image Rockridge Phoenix) - Age 22 - Uncapped
A minuscule 'pocket rocket' of a fullback, hair flying as she races down the flank. Crashes into tackles and generally makes a nuisance of herself, but she's supposedly level-headed and mature off the pitch.

3 - LB - Nimue Culpepper (Image Sabrefell Athletic) - Age 30 - 80 caps, 3 goals
Culpepper looks strangely weathered, a lot older than her years, and perhaps that makes sense. Her best attributes are her sense of anticipation and her intelligence, which extend her fair-but-indifferent physicality and technique as far as they can go.

5 - CB - Ruadri Wheater (Image Carsby) - Age 27 - 28 caps, 2 goals
A journeyman brawler who just can't be put down for long. Wheater's all but unstoppable in the air and has a decent pace on the ground, but he's not one to be trusted with the ball at his feet.

6 - CB - Hamish Jeong Harcourt (Image Vermillion Rage) - Age 25 - 27 caps, 1 goal
The son of iconic Quebecois centre-half Hye-Min Jeong, born and raised in Nephara, almost nobody in Brenecia expected Jeong to declare for the Patriots; nevertheless, this has happened, and early signs are that Jeong could be a mainstay in the Patriots' back line for a decade. Calm and intelligent on the ball, uncompromising in the tackle, fast in recovery.

17 - RB - Caomhin Hadley (Image Sabrefell Athletic) - Age 28 - 62 caps, 1 goal
A hard-bitten, tough-tackling but above all painfully disciplined fullback. Hadley puts his head down and gets the job done; he's never been considered one of Athletic's better players, and yet he's played in two Champions League finals for a reason, once on the winning side. Even at the highest level, you can simply rely on him not to fuck up.

18 - CB - Niko Calderwood (Image Kingsgrove) - Age 24 - Uncapped
A pugnacious, bruising defender, the kind who makes his presence known on and off the ball. Always niggling with fouls, always whispering something in the ear, and with a sharp sense of anticipation to rarely be turned or made a fool of.

22 - CB - Athelney Shrine (Image Falourr) - Age 33 - 88 caps, 3 goals
One of Brenecia's many rock-solid defenders, Shrine's about as fast a sprinter as an actual shrine. Fortunately, her instincts rarely guide her astray, and she's an oasis of calm no matter the pressure, both in and out of possession.

25 - LB - Shara Chalk (Image Southern Star) - Age 27 - 15 caps
An intelligent attacking fullback who had an unconventional breakthrough as a player but has parlayed it into becoming a mainstay for a Star side challenging at the top of Brenecia. Somewhat lightweight defensively, but otherwise well-rounded.

Midfielders
4 - HM - Skaidrina Briggs (Image AC Izotz Zubia) - Age 31 - 73 caps
A tough, taciturn midfielder who has proven reliable where called upon. Tall, powerful and strong in the tackle, Briggs has a rash, youthful physicality and a tendency to see picking up a caution as indication of a job well done. Has enjoyed a remarkable consistency in a blue shirt, and is one of the few Brenecians playing for a top club, albeit in a squad role.

8 - CM - Alyce Kearney (Image Southfell United) - Age 27 - 9 caps, 2 goals
Another of the Nepharan legion, Kearney's bought in owing to her personal loyalty to Erin Camden. A fearless midfielder with impeccable close control and an intense, focused personality, Kearney often clashes with those around her, but always with a view to improvement.

11 - AM - Alaoise Rourke (Image Liria Prizren) - Age 23 - 6 caps, 3 goals
Short and overweight, with no right boot to speak of, no interest in tracking back, Rourke is a proper throwback player. Because Brenecia only rarely get unambiguous stars. Rourke might not be outpacing the goalkeepers in a straight sprint, but she more than makes up for it with her God-given, finely-honed ability to strike a ball perfectly. Let her into your heart, and you'll fall in love.

14 - DM / CM - Bede Cheschon (Image Kingsbury United) - Age 26 - 23 caps, 2 goals
A versatile and disciplined midfielder; one of Camden's favourites, someone she sees herself in. Cheschon is a proper 'litmus test' footballer; if you think he's unimpressive, you don't understand the game. If you can see him gluing the midfield together, get your coaching badges.

19 - HM - Cathal Reventas (Image Northern Union) - Age 26 - Uncapped
Tall, powerful and uncompromising in the tackle, Reventas has earned his corn helping a dominant Union side bully all-comers in the A-League. International football can be a very different beast, but his ability is appreciated nonetheless. Pace is his only weak point, and his anticipation papers over it well.

23 - CM - Rajmund Sitko (Image West Couno United) - Age 29 - 42 caps, 6 goals
Sitko's not notably physical, but just has that quiet presence of mind and always goes looking for the ball. The kind of player analysts love and casuals don't see the point in and wonder why the team works better with him than without.

24 - CM - Felice Slivka (Image North Hall) - Age 23 - Uncapped
A meticulous passer of the ball, confident in tight spaces... Slivka isn't going to go flying in with blood and thunder, but she's going to take care of the ball. She'll let the ball do the running, too, with an enviable passing range and unnerving accuracy.

26 - AM - Vaida Meskela (Image Makosile) - Age 29 - 12 caps, 2 goals
A surprising recall to the squad after some years out of favour, Meskela's an effective and traditional playmaker whose well-rounded play - not least, ability to participate in a press - help her make up for the irreplaceable Rourke.

Forwards
7 - RW - Aneurin Wakering (Image CS Saint-Rémy) - Age 26 - 10 caps, 2 goals
A gangly, coltish winger with a deceptive change of pace. Glides past defenders. Makes it really annoying to search for Maerhen Wake's name.

9 - ST - Lowen Murdoch (Image Newark Argyle) - Age 25 - 2 caps, 1 goal
A Nephar with a Brenecian grandfather, plucked with the time-honoured method of finding an odd surname, and while something of a long shot, he's hoping to kick on after struggles at Zenith level and build a career for himself. Well-rounded and athletic, a natural, powerful spearhead.

10 - LW - Katua Byrne (Image AC Izotz Zubia) - Age 30 - 137 caps, 40 goals
Byrne's got it all. Top-class pace, fully two-footed, even relishes defensive work pressing high. She's going to go far, and she knows it, forcing a move to Audioslavia at an early age to get away from pockmarked Brenecian pitches, and since then she's only gone from strength to strength. Probably Brenecia's best left winger of all time.

13 - ST - Mor-Rioghain Stokes (Image Mountainside) - Age 28 - 54 caps, 24 goals
Stokes was considered good enough that the MiCF project, a rare case of a tail wagging a dog, decided to near-bankrupt the side trying to get Stokes on the nominally male-only league. She has the air of someone mystified she isn't one of the world's best; perhaps, with a less bumpy career trajectory, she might have been up there. An instinctive goalscorer with a good range of attributes and the right mentality to constantly battle back from the brink.

15 - RW / LW - Maerhen Wake (Image 1830 Cathair) - Age 28 - 82 caps, 24 goals
A muscular powerhouse who bristles with coiled energy, menace and malice. Wake's not the best-liked in the dressing room - he's always come across a bit as the kind of man who laughs when old ladies fall over on the street - but he's a cold model professional who always looks to make an impact. At present, along with Byrne, he's the side's obvious star.

16 - LW - Irina Alderwood (Image Mipojoseon) - Age 27 - 24 caps, 4 goals
An effective, athletic winger who lacks a real X-Factor; not a shining talent, but rather a player who has made it close to the top of the game through hard work and a relentless drive. Qualifies for Brenecia through ancestry.

21 - ST - Jadwiga Lofthouse (Image Yassaca) - Age 31 - 99 caps, 36 goals
Generally, when Union want a player, they just get one. So when a local rises through the ranks to break through, especially in a key position and at a young age, Brenecians take notice. A towering juggernaut, Lofthouse is certainly old-school but undeniably effective, and excels at helping bring others into play. Often maligned for her profligate finishing, but her goals tend to come at critical moments; that century of caps is no fluke.
Puppet of Nephara.

THE COLONY OF THE FHULGHAMOUS PENINSULA
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula (Full-Gah-Moose) was first established on 6 December 2008, when Fleftic explorers landed on what was then a previously undiscovered continent. These explorers landed on a large peninsula that they named Fhulghamous because of its rich and lush green forests. One of the explorers then fell into an old mine shaft while exploring the peninsula and discovered that the entire peninsula was lying on top of one of the biggest diamond deposits ever discovered by mankind. Once the explorers announced their discovery to the Fleftic government, the Democratic Republic Army Corps of Engineers was quickly dispatched to help speed up the establishment of the colony by helping in constructing settlements and assisting in constructing mining facilities to extract the diamonds within the land.

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula was officially established as a colony of the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft on 6 September 2010 following the signing of Democratic Republic Act No. 2340. The colony's capital would be Port Thimpodopoulos, named after Sergeant Major Pythagoras Thimpodopoulos of the Army Corps of Engineers, who tragically died of a heart attack during the construction of the settlement that would eventually bear his name. Today, Port Thimpodopoulos has a population of ten million, accounting for just under half of the total population of the colony. Other cities in the colony were Besanza, Tadoki, Haritzaga City and Thereisnogodabad, home of Multiverse Premier League club Thereisnogodistan FC.

The colony is under the leadership of Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano, brother of Minister of Colonial Affairs Demetrios Kulbano. His rule saw the Fhulghamous Peninsula's ascent to being one of the most economically-productive colonies of the Democratic Republic, but due to the colony's distance from the mainland Governor Kulbano is slowly beginning to treat the colony as his own personal fiefdom. This was one of the reasons why he had decided to send forth a petition to send a national team to the Di Bradini Cup, the Multiverse's top under-21 football competition. Unfortunately due to some last-minute troubles, the Fhulghamous Peninsula's team was not allowed entry into the Di Bradini Cup, leaving many people in the colony a bit unfulfilled. But when another chance to send forth a national team revealed itself, Governor Kulbano was quick to submit his team's entry, and this time he made sure that the wouldn't miss out on another chance at participating in an international competition.

HOME STADIUM (ARENA MARINOS, PORT THIMPODOPOULOS)
Image
Arena Marinos is the home ground of both FC Marinos Thimpodopoulos, which plays in Abanhfleft's Premier League (first level of the Fleftic football league system) and the Fhulghamous Peninsula national football team. It has a total capacity of 35,673 spectators. Now back in service after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake caused part of the stadium's roof to collapse and devastated the capital city of the colony, necessitating a lot of repairs.

RICHARD DAWKINS PARK, THEREISNOGODABAD
Image
Richard Dawkins Park has a capacity of 23,171 spectators. Following a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that devastated Port Thimpodopoulos, all Fhulghamous Peninsula home matches were held in RDP in Thereisnogodabad while repairs were being made on Arena Marinos. With Arena Marinos now fixed, both the Fhulghamous Peninsula Football Association and Thereisnogodistan FC have reached an agreement in which RDP will serve as an alternate venue for national team games in recognition for the time that Richard Dawkins Park served as the home stadium of the national team following the earthquake.

SYLESTONE NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

Campionato Esportiva 36

Image

OVERVIEW

Located in the far east of Esportiva, Sylestone is an equatorial nation home to roughly 30 million residents and while the vast, vast majority are humans, Sentients and even a small cluster of elves live on specific areas of the island, which has a size of roughly 700,000 kilometres squared. For the very first time in the nation’s history, though, Mytanar football manager Mojmir Anac’s squad to the 34th Campionato Esportiva and following World Cup Qualifiers - marking the return of international football for Sylestone in over half a decade - was composed of both Sentients as well as humans. In ages past, managers would prefer to not mix the two races out of fear for how that would go and with the Sentient sides almost always receiving the opportunity to play in tournaments while the humans sat in front of their televisions and watches, the vast majority of the Sylestonean population began to become distressed about this obvious favouritism. In fact, aside from the one Campionato Esportiva in the Licentian Isles that saw the human side capitulate to one point from three matches, they never actually received an official go.

But upon the heralded return of Sylestone to football and football to Sylestone, the appointment of Mojmir Anac changed all of that. Although a match between a mixed XI against Quebec and Shingoryeo had occurred the year before as part of a friendly series containing some of the multiverse’s biggest names, last year’s 34th Campionato Esportiva marked the very first time the two races shared the same half of a football field in an official game, or larger tournament. Although a mini-cup between the Sentients, Evermark, Tikariot and Quebec and Shingoryeo in Chamberley that saw the hosts’ only points come in a 2-2 draw with Evermark, results ever since have been the exact opposite of disappointing, and culminated in Anac being nominated as one of five nominees for International Manager of the Year in one Testiculos and even more importantly, saw Sylestone qualify for their first World Cup.

In fact, aside from last year’s World Cup, there hasn’t been a single tournament where Mojmir Anac has not impressed. His first tournament with the Sentients was the 34th Campionato Esportiva four years ago, where the team’s only two losses came against eventual champions Tumbra - once in the group stage and a second time in the knockouts after Sylestone had pulled off a massive upset by knocking off Brenecia following an 8-2 triumph over Macbon. The following World Cup Qualifiers are technically Sylestone’s best ever, recording 44 points in 22 games with a single digit in the goals conceded column… until Huayramarca took over Chamberley by storm in what ended up as an 8-4 shellacking over two playoff legs. However, two years later and backed by a fourth place finish in a home Campionato Esportiva alongside another strong World Cup Qualifying campaign, Anac’s side were not about to make the same mistake against Nyowani Kitara. Instead of mimicking their opponents style of football, they held their own as Riley Strathfield’s second half goal proved the difference in Græntfjall, sending the Sentients through to their first World Cup just three years after their return to the international scene.

After four wildly successful campaigns across the regional and multiversal levels, it was about time Mojmir Anac suffered his first failure. And even in this case, it’s still a tournament that ultimately garnered more praise than criticism, particularly internationally. Although they were out after their opening two fixtures, a pair of 1-0 hard fought 1-0 losses to Ko-oren and Eura were hardly anything to laugh about - although the better team won both encounters, either result could have swung the other way and no one would have batted an eye. It was the matchday three loss to the hosts that really hurt, the Sentients conceding six and even with a team composed primarily of second string players, that kind of result still hurts on the big stage.

This is the perfect tournament to bounce back and cement their status as one of the region’s very best, though. With Tumbra fielding a weakened squad and the Northlands not participating, the Sentients have got to be a heavy favourite. Is this where they win their first international football trophy?

Nickname: The Sentients
Formation: 4-4-1-1 → 4-2-3-1 or 5-4-1

MANAGER

Mojmir Anac Image (M, 41)
He’s a cult hero in Sylestone, and he fully deserves every skerrick of praise he has received. Not even a year into coaching, to have already been nominated as a candidate for the International Manager of the Year is truly spectacular, and in reality, he’s only just getting started. A former centre back with Olympia Thessia, Anac has already built a reputation for coaching defensive-minded football, with a strong preference for letting opponents dominate and then attacking them on the counter, giving up possession but certainly not giving up goals. Originally, Anac was employed by the Sylestonean Football Association (SFA) to attempt to unify the two races but with the nation’s human footballers beginning to outshine their counterparts from the Sentient city of Kirkham, that’s becoming less and less of a problem each and every day. Anac will push his players to their limits and demand lots of them but at the end of the day, he used to be a player as well, and knows just how hard that can be day in, day out.

GK: Brick Wall ?? ?? 222 1 Kirkham Appliances Image

On the back of yet another impeccable season with the Pesfield Trees, it should come as no surprise that the reliable Ryan Macleay has kept his starting spot - for the moment, he is undoubtedly Sylestone’s best between the sticks. What is surprising, though, is the omission of one Georgina Fuller who, just two years ago, was the country’s number one keeper at the home 35th Campionato Esportiva. It’s not even that she’s dropped off - simply, the rapid rise of the League Number One has meant that her middling performances in Tikariot simply do not compare like they used to and after failing to shine during her opportunities over World Cup Qualifiers and being the one to concede six against Græntfjall, perhaps it’s really not all that surprising. In her place as third choice keeper is Bianca Ding, the former AFC Droves number one before the club accepted Knetyohai’s bid just last month, joining Paige Sievier in the Orange League. Also a reliable shot stopper, Ding has an incredible penalty record and while she is on the short side, makes up for hit with her flexibility, positioning and ball distribution - in her younger years, she was just as adept in the midfield as she was in goals. Rounding out the squad is the talismanic Brick Wall, back again to add to its 222 caps. In other words, water is wet.

RB: Ella Lowe 28 F 0 0 Dodle Image

Yes, they might have conceded six goals in their most recent outing, but even that does not take away from the class this Sylestonean back line possesses. Over the past few years, the Hugo Mornington-led back four have asserted themselves as one of the best defensive outfits in world football - partially due to their own personal skill levels and partially due to coach Mojmir Anac’s ultra-defensive outlook on the game. In the centre, Hesham-based stalwart Hugo Mornington is undoubtedly Sylestone’s best and has been for a long time, branding the captaincy armband whenever he’s on the pitch. With an incredible football brain, Mornington is well equipped to take the likes of Alana Faucett, Alexander Nutt, Jake Blackall and other upcoming centre backs under his wing, often coaching them as much as Anac - a former centre back himself with Olympic Thessia and the Mytanija national football team. If necessary, Mornington is also capable of playing at left back, although that spot is generally reserved for the more aggressive minded Eden Holt. Often, Anac allows her the freedom to move up and down the wing and regularly plays a critical role in starting a counterattack with her pace and skill, and loves a good tackle as well. However, Holt does often only operate in that sort of role for seventy to eighty minutes, with her backup Isabella Cross a more suitable defensive player and as a member of the current Avondale City Invincibles, she is certainly more capable. On the right is another Tumbran-based international in Lesley Keller - one of six in this group - and generally, is one suited to more of a wingback role, although is happy dropping back to form a back three under Anac when Holt makes moves up the pitch. Has a vicious tackle and is not afraid to draw a yellow card, but does not have the technical skills or pace of her in-form backup Ella Lowe who, after a dominant season that saw Dodle obtain an unprecedented CEdC berth in their return to top flight football, has done enough to pip the likes of the Toilet and youngster Holly Statton for a spot in this 26-player squad to Tumbra. Expect much of her off the bench or if she receives a start because she’s got to be one of the best right backs playing in Sylestone right now.

RM: Abigail Jones 30 F 46 5 Pria City Image
RM: James Barclay 23 M 15 1 Montreal City Image

While the Sylestonean midfield may not be as celebrated as their defensive line, when a player of Raphael Brown’s calibre is sitting on the bench you know it’s pretty bloody good - particularly considering that the former Sentient captain can be used as both a midfielder and a centre back. Instead, starting over the Belgrave stalwart in the central midfield is the more aggressive Gemma Rodway, who's done nothing but shine with Newark Argyle in the T-League over the past few years. Alongside the creative midfielder is Avondale City’s Jack Lawson, whose performances with the recent League Number One champions have led to many Lime Green fans proclaiming his partnership with Quebec’s Pyo Seung-Hye to be “one of the best double pivots in the world” and yes, while it’s a stretch, it’s certainly tearing the league apart. At just 24 years of age, Lawson’s ball skills and distribution is almost flawless and he runs like a horse, too. With he and Rodway's current form, it will take quite something for the likes of Callum Blair - a very good midfielder in his own right - and 21-year-old Thomas Hellyer to be considered national starters anytime in the foreseeable future. Joining the pair on the left is Jack Ryland, who was recently transferred from Colbrook City to Serrapince for a whopping seven million NSD - the highest anyone has ever paid for a Sylestonean. As an attacking winger, Ryland may regularly be substituted for the more defensive Cayden Holmes, whose experience at both left back and in the midfield will undoubtedly come in handy. On the right, who else but Abigail Jones is going to start for the Sentients? Easily the country’s best right winger after her years in Chromatika, Jones’ pace, skill and crossing down the right side of the field is simply sensational and with James Barclay coming through the ranks, she now has the opportunity to tutor the upcoming generation as she nears the wrong side of thirty years old. When behind or in need of goals, the wingers will often push forward as the formation switches to a 4-2-3-1, or they may centralise ever so slightly if transitioning to five at the back when protecting a lead.

Bret Sarcav-Jones really is the full package, isn’t he? Fresh off winning the Q-League with St John’s Arsenal, the 19-year-old has leapt into the Sylestonean starting XI, ahead of the ageing Rose Fleetwood and Cameron Keyes - something truly to be marvelled at considering the skill levels of both players. Often, it is clear that defences simply do not know how to deal with the all-round gifted playmaker he is and although there are many areas of improvement that still need working on, he has the potential to be one of the very best. However, due to his youth, it will be very unlikely that Sarcav-Jones plays every single game, with Rose Fleetwood or Lakewood United supersub Cameron Keyes both certain to play minutes and maybe even start games, whether it be as attacking midfielder or as forward - both can play as either role equally well.

FORWARDS

NAME AGE SEX CAPS GOALS CLUB
CF: Charlotte Eastwood 23 F 12 0 Avondale City Image
CF: Riley Strathfield 27 M 31 13 Chardonnay Rangers Image

No, that is not a typo. This is the order Mojmir Anac is expected to start his forwards for with an eye on the future, there is little doubt that Charlotte Eastwood will be Sylestone’s number nine for many years to come. Fresh off holding aloft the League Number One with Avondale City and winning the golden boot for her work in front of goal, the 23-year-old’s domestic performances have seen her thoroughly deserve this callup - it’s just that internationally, she hasn’t had any impact. Sure, most of her dozen caps came as substitute and most of her brilliant work has generally been off the ball but even so, as a forward, you should be scoring at least a few times. Perhaps, with backing from the coach, this could be her breakout tournament and if she fails to fire again, then there’s always Riley Strathfield waiting patiently in the wings and he is far more proven at this level. With thirteen goals and three assists in 31 caps, his time at Nephara’s Chardonnay Rangers has only boosted his game and in such a defensive-minded side, those numbers are simply marvellous. Can he take his opportunities and regain that starting spot with his clinical and precise finishing?

Notes for Blog Post
(Note to self, do people actually read the blog post? Reminder to ask Filippo for the web traffic vs the physical distributions when I get home)

Finally arrived in Tumbra. Seems nice enough. Minor drama when Prof. Antonouli was too busy arguing the pros and cons of goalies writing penalty takers’ preferences on their water bottles with Dr, Halmatten-Schiller to notice that the stairs down from the plane started with one huge step before becoming regular. She took a tumble down the whole thing and broke her ankle. Or it looked like it, anyway. Athena stepped in and instantly fixed it.

Similar note, none of the team were at all jetlagged. Except possibly Minnie. Although, not sure how you’d tell.

(Note to self – does Minnie actually like being called Minnie? HIGH PRIORITY)

Athena didn’t appear the be on the flight from what I could tell. Not sure where she came from.

(Note to self, before math reports start being filed, work out how to affectively convey Athena’s speech through typology. She feels like she talks in caps lock all the time, and I need to work out how to get that across.)

Settled into hotel well. Write some fluff about the local area.

(Note to self, go for a walk around the local area. Might help. Journalistic integrity. Remember what Prof. Anto said in last week's lecture.)

Zannellis spends most of his time in the gym, and Spiro is busy getting way way too far into the filing systems they use in their booking services at front desk. Kid needs to calm down.

Prof. Dimitrieli has already sent three members of staff flying up the grand staircase on a jetpack. Think there’s a queue forming at reception for the next time she trials a piece of kit.

Athena has disappeared again. Trust she’ll appear before kick-off otherwise we’re a bit stuffed.

The Gaffer and his assistant won’t respond to my texts asking for a pre-tournament interview.

(Note to self, keep trying?)

(Note to self, unless that’s going to annoy them further?)

(Note to self, work out what the best course of action is going to be, and then do that instead. HIGH PRIORITY)

Prof. Innes went for a walk last night and came home with a fascinating amount of information about the political underground in Tumbra.

(Note to self, how honest should I be when I talk about fascinating it really was? Does Alice read my blog? How to find out without asking...)

Sharing a room with Dr. Romanide. She insists I call her Doc Maz. I told her I’m not sure we’re at that level of familiarity yet, but she’s busy seeing how penicillin and puffballs communicate with each other under my bed, so clearly she thinks we have done.

(Note to self, ask about possible room availability. Before I grow something.)

First game is against Brenecia. About as difficult as you could get in your opening fixture. Not expecting to win but we’ve been putting the hours in on the training ground so you never know.

WITH ATHENA, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.

Wait, I didn’t write that...

CAMPIONATO ESPORTIVA 36

Call-up of Savigliano star Esposito "impedes chances" of Tumbran player development, says Bayh

STRATON: On the eve of Tumbra's first Campionato Esportiva match against South Newlandia in the nation's capital, former Straton, Lakewood United, and Clyde Park manager Ted Bayh has criticised manager Peter Gabriel's selections for Esportiva's regional football tournament, in particular focusing his criticism on the manager's choice for the second right-back spot on the team. Gabriel, who released his squad selection two weeks ago, omitted the usual high-profile names of Stephen Kerr, Trudy Harrison, and Nick Riordan in favour of an entirely domestically-based squad; something that earned plaudits and criticisms alike.

Bayh, however, seems to have zeroed in his criticism on the choice of Savigliano-Tumbran right-back Gianni Esposito for the roster. Esposito, 28, joined Colbrook City in the summer transfer window from Kelssek's Burnaby for two million dollars. In his first press conference with the club, Esposito declared that he "was ready to play, not just for Colbrook, but also for Tumbra," revealing that he had taken up the option of gaining Tumbran citizenship immediately after completing his registration with the club. The scheme, which was inaugurated in the mid-2020s, sees the citizens of nations such as Tequilo, Savigliane and Qusmo the opportunity to take up Tumbran citizenship. While the exact criteria for the nations eligible for this scheme is not exactly clear, leaked documents in the past have used a criteria called "inactivity". This criteria also means that citizens of the nations currently occupying the landmass of Farfadilis would likely be unlikely to be granted Tumbran citizenship under this scheme.

In remarks made on a Campionato Esportiva preview show, Bayh criticised the decision to call up Esposito as one that was "effectively meaningless" and said the spot should have gone to someone like Jennifer Murray (Esposito's team-mate at Colbrook), or Ashley Crittenden (of Couno Rangers), as a means of further crafting them into national team players." The comment generated controversy from his fellow pundits — Nepharan Matthias Bregander notably said that Esposito's former nationality "should not determine" whether Esposito should or shouldn't be on the Tumbran national team; while former national team left-back Ryan Hughes and Tikariotian Atlas Baxter pointed to the increasing number of dual-national Tumbrans both in the league and abroad, with Tumbran-Chromatiks Shim Seo-yeon and Sylviane Fortier in this CE36 squad, as well as Tumbran-Graentfjaller Esekíel Sváfnisson, who joined 1896 Ebor in the transfer market for 2.5m.

After the show aired, plenty of online buzz occurred in relation to Bayh's comments on the show; with opinions ranging from Bayh's statements being "needlessly nativist" to "he's right, actually." The controversy seems to be the latest part in the ongoing national conversation over what it means to be truly Tumbran in an age of hyper-globalisation and migration, as well as the ongoing question over whether Peter Gabriel should be kept in his job after a disappointing end to World Cup 94.

Tumbra plays South Newlandia in the opening match of the tournament in the Eagles' Club, the country's largest stadium and unofficial home of the national team, tomorrow night at 8pm.

Nickname: Black Butterflies

Soccer (known as hateball in Hannasea because of how much we hate it) is an all-female sport. It is not played at a high level and players are a step below full international level, one inexplicable quarterfinal run notwithstanding. The team is not very physically strong but have been working to improve fitness and reduce sloppy errors.

Coach: Kate Grant
Kate was the successful manager of Pearl City Rovers in the Federation Hateball League and has been the Black Butterflies' most successful coach, with innovations including new formations, passing drills, and not losing every game.

Squad Featuring shirt numbers for the first time ever!!

#12 GK Kayla ColeNew! Image Olympic Mayswick
Kayla takes over from former captain Natasha, though Natasha will retain the #1 shirt and Kayla start in #12. Though young, Kayla is very calm and composed, and has good, alert reflexes. She's less comfortable playing the ball out with her feet than Natasha is, however. Reserves: #1 Natasha Green, #26 Emily PalmerNew!.

#3 LB Gianna Espinoza Image Port Tacassam FC
Contrasting options at left-back. Gianna is the better technician of the two, an elegant wing-back; Karissa is a bit scrappier and more willing to throw in the needed tackle. Reserve: #15 Karissa James.

#6 CB Karina Wilkinson Image Star of Confederation
The tough tackling Karina has a high work rate and will give everything for the team at both ends. She’s not especially big for a center back and makes up for it with a bit of tactical roughness. She was captain in the past but seems to enjoy being in the ranks more. Reserves: #22 Aurora ColemanNew!, #17 Julia HollandNew!.

#5 CB Maddison DryNew starter! Image Iron Nest Shores FC
Tall, willowy central defender. Good with the ball at her feet. Doesn't have much of a killer instinct in the tackle. Loves frozen yogurt.

#2 RB Meaghan Earls Image Esna
Meaghan is fast and can cross the ball powerfully, but is not exceptionally tough on defence. Reserve: #16 Abby AllenNew!.

#13 LDM Hayley DinesNew starter! Image Dynamo
Hayley is not the most skilled player but she's very fit and determined, and will chase the ball and the opposing team around gamely. On the ball she looks to off-load quickly and isn't comfortable holding in possession for too long. Reserves: #4 Amara Wallace, #24 Sophia MasonNew!.

#8 RDM Chelsea Crawford Image Barossia United
Chelsea is a busy playmaker who anchors the midfield. She's a little undersized to be providing much defensive cover but she's very good on the ball, and quite tough, having learned to scrap in the demanding Nepharan leagues. Reserves: #11 Lily-Mae Murray, #19 Daisy TurnerNew!.

#10 AM Annabella Rose Image Stade Conflans
An intelligent playmaker who has to take on the role Maya Davidson once held of stringing the attacks together, Annabella is fast and has a good quality shot, but none of her forebear's abilities from set pieces. Reserve: #20 Demi WellsNew!.

#7 LW Mikayla Ross Image Angelwood Wanderers
Mikayla is an intelligent passer and has good football IQ but is quite small and can get bullied off the ball. Breakaway pace but not so good at turning at speed. Her backup, Aisha, is the first black Black Butterfly. Reserve: #21 Aisha Connell.

#14 RW Emma Terrell Image Springriden
A determined and intelligent player, albeit one without the kind of pace needed to regularly beat defenders. Very accurate at passing and crossing. Never shirks from a tackle despite her mousy physique. Would run through a wall for her teammates. Reserve: #25 Sarah Williamson.

#9 ST Remi Gray Image Lydholm Forened
Short for a striker (yes, we get it already). She has great ball control and can withstand the physical side a bit better than some of her teammates. She's an excellent finisher. By far the best player on the team, the only real question is whether she's actually Hannasean. Reserves: #18 Brooke Read, #23 Mackenzie Gray.

Formation: 4-2-3-1/4-3-3
Set-pieces: Ross/Rose/Gray

Now, let's have a look at this squad:

Nickname: Warriors
Acronym: ACA
Denonym: Acadianans
Official Supporters Group: Blue, Gold and Green

Manager: Thierry Yarran, 49
Assistant Manager: Grigorij Kubes, 41 (NZS)

After a long, celebrated career in both the AcaLeague and the Q-League, where he was the star midfielder of Hyacinthe of the South and pre-promotion-to-dynasty Mipojoseon, Thierry Yarran has made a decent managerial career with the Hyacinthe of the South before landing his position with the Acadinana national team for the second straight cycle. So far so good, as the previous CE where Acadiana played well, only to be denied entry into knockout round due to the federation's own financial issues that struck them midway into the tournament, so you never know what could happen the second time around.

That aside, they aren't a particularly exceptional pair with him and his assistant Grigorij Kubes, for most part, setting plans well but aren't always known to be the best in mid-game adjustments, but they do try now and then to shake things up for their team. They have also shown their openness to try different formations now and then, even if their usually preferred one would be 5-1-3-1, and they aren't shy in using relatively inexperienced players up front either.

So who knows, maybe they will actually pull something off! Or they might not. Who knows really.

Default Formation: 4-1-3-1
Approach: Slow tempo. Direct, narrow width, short passing lanes. Bit more centralised in terms of play. Strikers may enjoy long ball.
Starting XI: Jung; Yim - Carter - Wood-Beveridge - Vanunu - Nantel-Viau; Byeon - Cha - Umbarra - Gkountoura; Remaine - Toypurina

Head Coach: Dale Hartford-Phelps, Zwangzug (60)
The former manager of the Twineur Bugs was immediately liked thanks to his fast-paced style of play, his willingness to do a rebuild with the aging Elephants, and his dry humour. Following some initial controversy around former captain Mikhail Trischuk and a failed qualifying campaign, Hartford-Phelps has turned his fortunes around by leading the Elephants to a Campionato Esportiva title. After that, things went downhill a little, with the Elephants down on their luck in recent Campionatos; he is entering the tournament with a chip on his shoulder.

Expected starting eleven:

GK: Edward Khan (27) Avondale City (Sylestone)
The goalkeeper of top Sylestonian team Avondale City has played himself in the starting spot for the Elephants as well, and has played a strong campaign in the most recent one. That included a shutout against Tumbra, which I am bringing up for no reason in particular. The Sylestonian bronze glove winner is the undisputed number one for the Elephants right now, and in contention for the best player on the squad.

LB: Leon Mazza (26) Avondale Beach (Sylestone)
Defender for the other Sylestonian team, Leon Mazza is taking over the starting role for the first time after a backup role last time. The Sylestonian League is well-known for excellent defense, and while Mazza still has room to grow, he should be the better sideline defender.

CB: Marc Westond (34) Chamberley City (Sylestone)
After playing well for Latrobe Athletic in Kelssek, Westond is about to complete a move to the Sylestonian League as well. He, too, is finally stepping into a starting role after looking solid as a backup for most of his Elephants’ career.

CB: Mary Romero (20) Scolastico (Elmyia)
Despite her young age, Romero has performed admirably after joining Scolastico in Elmyia. She’s playing like a long-time veteran out there, and is positioning herself to become a cornerstone for this team in the future. She’s the youngest player starting for this team by a decent margin, but there’s no reason to be overly worried.

RB: Wesley Medrano (35) Chalesm (Squornshelan Remnant States)
Image

Medrano has been bouncing in and out of the team for ages, but with recent good performances in the Remnant States, the Elephants are bringing him back to play Right Back. Granted, a lot of this is due to everyone else at that position being pretty bad, but the Ellies value his experience and entrust him to play out of his regular Centerback position.

LM: Luisa Johnson (24) Pesfield Trees (Sylestone)
Another key Sylestonian player that gathered some previous experience on the bench, Johnson is stepping into a starting role on the very rock-heavy left side of the team. She’s worked through some injuries in her career already, but she’s healthy right now, and should be a good asset for this team. She’s also responsible for corners.

CM: Alexander Lyon (33) Bradwell Saints (Krytenia)
Lyon is joining the squad despite missing the last CE. He’s been good in Krytenia, where he plays as an AM; he’ll probably be a relatively aggressive CM if that’s anything to go by. He’s not one of the better starters of the team, as he’s not as much of a playmaker as you’d like, but he can play well for sure.

RM: Arnold Bois-Miller (38) Flania Zarss (SRS)
One of the oldest starters on the team, Bois-Miller has excelled since joining Zarss, standing out as a surprisingly good player on the field and an excellent veteran presence on it. He’s played for the Elephants in key moments in the past, and with the other options looking lacklustre, the veteran Elephant is back in the starting lineup.

(C) ST: Brandon Irving (40) Urbizania Wanderers (Astograth)
Irving has always been there for the Elephants, and accounts for a solid portion of the Elephants’ goals in their World Cup Finals history. Despite some inconsistencies for his club teams, mediocrity with Barnley before moving on to Astograth for a (tied) South Newlandian record 6 million, his highs are as high as few other players. ‘Elefantea’, as he has been nicknamed by the Wanderers’ fans, has been a force for them, really reigniting a career that seemed to be slowly getting stale. Sure, he’s 40 now, and certainly not running as much as he used to in his prime; but he still has a trunk for goals, and is the spiritual leader of this team.

ST: Nita Hanson (33) Hornchurch (Eura)
Nita Hanson is easily, and by a long-shot, the player with the most interesting backstory entering this tournament. She used to play here, for Fraser Valley, but has been excellent ever since joining Hornchurch in Eura, repeatedly being in the conversation for awards. She’s certainly been a late bloomer, but after some good sparkplug performances of the bench, she is entering a starting role with the expectation that she can be the best striker on this team. She’s also going to kick free kicks and penalties.

ST: Reid Gomez (33) Lokomotive Jarnstad (Savojarna)
Gomez had gone on an absolute tear through Quebec and Shingoryeo, which has gotten him lots of praise both in Quebec and South Newlandia. The young striker has scored 29 goals in the Q-League, more than any other player, in his first season. Since, he’s joined Lok Jarnstad, where he’s continued to play very well, and he remains a frequent source of goals.

Bench:

GK: Margherita Schreiber (21) Crester Wanderers (Cap Nord)
One of the brightest young talents that South Newlandia has to offer, Schreiber has been excellent in Cap Nord. She’s already starting for a midtable Cap Nord side, and while she’s not one of the best goalkeepers out there yet, she has the best chances to eventually take over the starting goalkeeper job.

GK: Li Braveheart (41) Marinos Thimpodopoulos (Abanhfleft)
Braveheart hasn’t been on this team in a while (WC88), and he’s also listed at 41, but according to him, he should be around thirty. Sure, it’s the third-string goalkeeper; what can go wrong, really.

LB: Alexis Tuskie (22) Chamberley City (Sylestone)
She’s about to be a teammate of Marc Westond on the back-end, which should probably help the young talented Elephants develop further. Tuskie plays hard, but fair, and is one of the best backups on this squad with plenty of room to improve.

CB: Mats Wilson (20) Olympique Isbècque (Cap Nord)
Much like Schreiber, Wilson is a very talented player who joined a decent team in Cap Nord. He’s not seeing too many minutes yet, he’s a gifted talent who might continue to ascend further. After Tuskie, he’s the most likely substitute.

CB: Tommy Anderson (40) Couziers-Olympiques (Ko-oren)
A true Elephants veteran, Anderson has been with this team for ages (he was literally on the Baptism of Fire squad), making him another important clubhouse leader. His play isn’t really there anymore, but he contributes in important ways off the field.

CB: Kenzo Harrison (30) Rosenpfelblatz City (Abanhfleft)
Harrison has just fetched a big price on the transfer window, becoming the other player on a Fleftic team. He’s been consistent in Kelssek as well, and is the most likely player to sub in as Right Back, also playing out of position.

LM: Claudia Serrano (31) Rozelle Archers (Brenecia)
Serrano, playing in Brenecia, might be one of the most underrated South Newlandians. She’s been performing quite well there, even if few were paying attention. She might just be the most likely midfielder to come in off the bench.

LM: Corban Green (38) Parrhesia United (Nephara)
Green is one of the players that have been around since the beginning, and he can’t even be stopped by a coaching change. His biggest weakness is being very prone to injury, to the point where his knee is broken more often than not. When he’s healthy, he was elite (he certainly isn’t any more, but might be able to give you some good play off the bench), but that’s far too rarely the case. For now, he seems mostly fine, but things can go wrong with little to no warning.

AM: Finnley Wallis (43) Cyrene Bay (Oberour Ar Moro)
Sure, he’s listed as 43, but according to him, he’s actually in his mid-thirties. That seems difficult to believe, as the midfielder has noticeably slowed down from his prime. Nevertheless, he’s been decent for Cyrene Bay, and is bringing a lot of experience with him.

AM: Alessio Lombardo (21) Nova Aegis (Saint Eleanor)
Lombardo left Elephant Valley to join one of the only even smaller countries that were an option. He’s been good for Nova Aegis, and should be a decent option to back up the Right side of the midfield. Sure, there’s still a lot of things that need to improve for him to be a consistent starter, but he’s certainly on the way there.

AM: Aaryav Weiß (29) Flames of the West (Chromatika)
Weiß is definitely the last player to make this squad, but despite not playing for a top-tier Chromatik side, Weiß has left a mark. He’s also one of the midfielders that can probably give you ninety consistent minutes, so if any of the other midfielders go down, his prospects might improve a lot.

ST: Benjamin de Wahr (24) SK Cuprum Grennvik (Savojarna)
Definitely the first choice off the bench for strikers on this team, de Wahr has excelled since joining Cuprum in Savojarna. Scoring tons of goals for the team managed by former Elephants GK Mikhail Trischuk, he seems to have a bright future ahead of him; but the experience just isn’t quite there yet.

ST: Levin Voigt (23) Capitol Athletic (Sylestone)
Voigt has a lot of potential, and has been surprisingly good in the harsh striker environment of Sylestone. He’s good a good future ahead of him for this team, but much like de Wahr, he still needs to learn.

ST: Russ Shaw (24) Strathcona Internationals (Kelssek)
After one strong run, Shaw has tapered off a fair amount, but he’s been decent in Kelssek after leaving Esportiva. He’s definitely worth a back-up spot here.

ST: Tom Sloan (35) Wynleth Flyers (Kelssek)
Sloan actually started in the most recent campaign. That was going too far, but the veteran is a decent player who could do a little damage off the bench, even if he isn’t the first or second choice for that purpose.
