WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS 21

Darkmania

Hello from Darkmania.

As the global ice hockey community are setting their eyes on the young nation, we greet you with open arms. Just as you once were new
Darkmania has entered a new world where the opportunities are endless. We were able to lift the trophy in Græntfjall and defied expantations.
Maybe you are the next and will also become a future hockey superstar? When you are young your story has no end in sight. Take everything you
can to shape your story and make the best out of it. Today you might lift the trophy for the junior World Cup but tomorrow you will lift the trophy
for the senior world cup and compete along the elite.

Ice Hockey in Darkmania is one of the most popular spectator sports, with the primer league EÿsLüga being hugely popular. When matches are being
played, the venues are often full of fans cheering for their teams. Due to field hockey also being a popular sport in Darkmania, the sport is commonly
referred as “Ice-Hockey” A normal seasons starts in late August /early September and ends in the playoff in early May. Ice hockey is also popular with
the darkmanian youth, and it is estimated that there are half a million players under the age of 20.

This is the first time that an international ice hockey event is taking part in Darkmania alone, as Darkmania was ¼ of the Novapax quad at the
46th World Cup in Ice Hockey hosted by Mercedini & Novapax. It is a small step for Darkmania for but a giant leap for darkmanian ice hockey. We wish you
all good luck.

Signed
President of The United Provinces of Darkmania,
-Ädam Hüskam

This tournament is a junior tournament, meaning that each player must be 20 years old or younger. But this is NationStage and there isn’t a single definition of what an “age” is. Some nations ages differently than others. Plus, we have some non-humans that may be 20 years where they are from but are much older on Earth. For the purposes of this tournament, any un-aged players are by default 20 earth-years old IC. The tournament also assumes that any non-humans have the same strength of that of regular human beings.

A roster bonus is awarded on the match date it is posted in full and there is also an RP bonus for roleplaying at least once per matchday. RPing destruction of any property, death of any creatures or introducing pandemics is best refrained from posting. Any roster reservations are not allowed and will not be included as part of the roster bonus the matchday it is finished. Since this is a non-ranked tournament, RPing will increase your chances of winning by lots and it therefore you are encouraged to RP. You are also encouraged to post a full roster of 23 players with 3 goalies and 20 position players with 6 on the rink (1 goalie – 2 defenders and 3 forwards). Each match has 3 periods of play with one period lasting 15 minutes. This is called Regulation Time. In the case there is a draw, new periods of 15 minute of play is played until we have a goal. Any periods played after RT is called Over Time (“OT”).

To ensure good RP in this thread, you are asked to include Roleplay Permissions on the rosterpost. This is a tool that will dictate your fellow’s RP towards you. Please follow your and other’s Roleplay Permissions so we can all have a great tournament together.
Code: Select all
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
    Choose my Scorers: Yes/No
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes/No
    Eject my players: Yes/No
    Godmod scoring events: Yes/No
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Yes/No
    Godmod Other Events: Yes/No

The scornator of choice is Xkoranate, with the "SQIS formula with OT only" in the Group Stage -rounds only, with draws turned off. Starting from the knockout stage of the tournament (after all group-stage matches have been played), "SQIS formula with Shootouts" will be used. Home advantage is turned off at any stage of the tournament, but style-mods is turned on. The stylemods ranges from -5 (most defensive, as in more protective) to +5 (most aggressive, as in more attacking). A more defensive team are more likely to win small than big and a more aggressive team is more likely to win big than small, but remember it is a chance that you win. Given that Darkmania isn’t an experience hoster, your style mod must be clearly marked and if the host can’t find it easily then your team is by default set by “0”. Any nations who haven’t posted a roster is also by default set to “O”. You are permitted to have one stylemod-change as long as you have contacted the host about this.

(Darkmania notes that this map has been edited for city placements, as only Anÿme have been placed prior to this hosting, and an island removal, as the island in question isn’t important.)

Darkmania is a federal republic with 42 provinces and their federal territory with powers of that of a province. A land of tall mountains, green forests, fjords as far as one can see with their eyes and bizarre wine-tastes. It is home to many countless citizens that calls The Land of The Golden Eagle their home. The official language is Darkmanian, who has two forms with some noticeable differences between them, but regional languages such as Hiklarmangian and Amgarite is also widely spoken. English is also spoken as a second language, but darkmanians is also noted for their heavy accent when speaking English.

There will officially be 10 host cites/towns spread throughout Darkmania. Transports between the host cites are easy and plentiful. The most common transport-method are either on a bus, driving on the 6 line motorway where the speedlimit are 120 km/h or by highspeed trains that regularly drives at 250 km/h. Domestic flights are an another option but usually not the preferred method for convenience reasons. When crossing the sea to Hiklarmangia there is a ferry that takes 2 hours. The currency in Darkmania is called “Däenk” where 1 Däenk are worth 100 Kärsels. Prices tend not to be high but not low either.

National Broadcaster DaTV has been announced as host broadcaster for this event and will be broadcasting every match with rented areas for those wishing to host pre-match broadcasts. A press centre is located near the host venues within walking distance, providing easy access to journalists who has come to cover the tournament.

HOST VENUES

Örkendrem – Dëritee Ärenä (40 000)
Örkendrem is the capital of Darkmania and by far the largest darkmanian city by population with 12 million citizens. Örkendrem is also perhaps the largest city in Novapax by population. The city is where the federal legislature is located and is also home to many important national institutions. Outside of being the capital, the city is known for its Old Town, its university and its many monuments and museums.

The capital has many ice rinks within city borders, but for the World Cup the Dëritee Ärenä is the chosen venue for the capital. Dëritee is the name of the biggest domestic car brand in Darkmania and also a sponsor of this event. Dëritee Ärenä has hosted many things but serves today as a mostly sporting-only venue, it’s last non-sporting event being WorldVision Song Contest 67. For the tournament, it has a capacity of 40 000 and is serving only as the venue for the opening match and the gold final.

Cäer – Fërligme Ärenä (10 000)
Cäer is the 2nd largest city in Darkmania and is known as the City of Skyscrapers. There are more skyscrapers in Cäer than in any other places and is also home to the largest tower in Darkmania, Sky Tower. Outside of the towers, the city is also known for their nightlife and the river Rëvtos flows through the city.

Fërligme Ärena, named after a popular brand of soft drinks (and also beer) are the home of Cäer Crash and the venue for Cäer and can seat 10 000. There has been recent controversy with the venue when it was part of a WSC bid that got pulled due to issues with it, but they have been fixed with a short renovation.

Anÿme – Anÿme Community Arena (10 000)
Anÿme is Darkmania’s 5th largest city by population size and perhaps the one with the most bizarre name, dating from the 900’s. The southern resort city is most famously known as the host city of WorldVision Song Contest 92 with Anÿme Community Arena being the host city. Dubbed “Holiday Capital of Darkmania”, there are known for their zoo, being the largest zoo in Darkmania by far, their downtown with their old houses from around 1880s as well as being the smallest city in Darkmania without a metro because the tram/light-rail network covers all the city and suburbs.

While Anÿme has a top-class ice hockey team with their own rink, the venue will be Anÿme Community Arena, the WSC92- and the WCOH46- hosted venue due to bigger capacity, with 11 000 for the tournament as was the case when they hosted WCOH46. The venue replaced an aging venue from the 1950s when it opened in 2020 and has also hosted political rallies and tennis tournaments.

Jëlsmärke – Coppers Arena (5 000)
Jëlsmärke is a small town with “only” 25 000 inhabitants but it is also known for having a rich mining heritage, once being the town that produced the largest volume of copper and coal for Darkmania, a legacy that has left its mark is the fact that it is the smallest place with a “metro”. Why they call it a metro is unknown as it is just an old tramway with five stations, but it has been called a “metro” due to local slang, and as such has been recognized as a metro.

Jëlsmärke is also famous for their team. “Jëlsmarkë Coppers” is one of the top teams in Darkmanian Ice Hockey, having won 17 national titles since 1944 when “Coppers”. The name comes from the fact that copper was mined in Jëlsmarkë. They have their home in Builerman Arena, dubbed “Coppers Arena” for the tournament, a venue from the 1970’s to provide an indoor venue for the team, replacing the old outdoor ice rink. Jëlmarkë Arena is the smallest venue, only hosting 5 000.

Gërreje – Tërreje Sports Hall (7 500)
Gërreje may not be far away from the capital but they can be proud of the city is home to the National Sports Academy, offering countless sports for the future darkmanian sports star. Outside of being the home of the NSA, it is known for the theatre which is one of the busiest. It is said that there is always something there every week.

They may not have top-tier ice hockey team despite it being in the top league, but they have a venue suitable for the tournament since the team in question has theirs currently being renovated. Tërreje Sports Hall is proud to host 7 500 for the WC. Not bad for a venue that is more known for other indoor sports than ice hockey. Spending winter here is a memory you will not forget.

Rëndstÿrna – HoF Rëndstÿrna ËisHöckey Ärenä (7 500)
Rëndstÿrna is a cozy medium-sized town (or a tiny city depending on the definition) and is the winter sport capital of Darkmania, with more skiing resorts than any other place in Darkmania. The town also has a lot of winter sports venues, including a luge-sliding track, and several ice-skating halls.

But their primary ice hockey hall takes the whole cake. Rëndstÿrna ËisHöckey Ärenä is the venue that is built inside of a mountain. It is one of the most iconic venues from Darkmania and is now also officially in the Hall of Fame. 7 500 lucky audience members can get an experience they will never forget.

Lëiberbörg – Söwberhak (10 000)
Lëiberbörg has always been seen as the religious capital of Darkmania, that referring to it being the biggest city within the darkmanian bible belt. And it is also unsurprising that it is also the de facto capital for the Darkmanian Church which does most of its national work there. So, it is also a shock when Lëiberbörg also is known as the most socialist city, due to a noted tendency to elect socialist mayors at local elections and representatives. Their last non-socialist mayor was elected in 1986. So, the 8th biggest city in Darkmania has the Lëiberbörg Cathedral next to the headquarters of the Socialist Party of Darkmania.

In the world of ice hockey, Lëiberbörg is known for Lëiber Söwber, or polar bears in English. The Söwber’s home venue is the “Söwberhak”. “Polar Bear Hall” in English. There is no wild polar bear in the venue, only white and ice-blue coloured 10 000 seats. Now any mention of the Söwbers cannot go without mentioning the Söwber Curse, where it is said that if any Söwber fans has anything coloured orange (screens with the colour orange is fine) with them it will cause the Söwber to lose the match, and hence an unofficial ban of anything orange. This will not be in effect for the tournament.

Tärrelo – Tärrelo Ice Hall (7 500)
Tärrelo is a city of wine. Tärrelo has a lot of wineries and that is the city’s main bread and butter. And while darkmanian wine is famous for its questionable tastes, Tärrelo is the place to go if you want to have a glass of darkmanian wine. On the non-wine side, it has a reputation for LGBT nightlife and its cuisine.

Tärrelo’s selected venue is the Tärrelo Ice Hall, usually a rink used for recreational ice skating that has been converted to a hockey rink for the tournament with 7 500 seats. It’s seen as the oldest in the tournament, having been opened in 1968, and does feel that it is aged but with renovations being done in 2022 it still lives on. Just don’t peel the paint.

Sërborg/Cerburg – Lakossen Arene (15 000)
Sërbörg in darkmanian, or Cerburg in hiklarmangian is the biggest city in the Autonomous Province of Hiklarmangia and the only city not in the mainland, as Hikarmangia is separated by a body of ocean that takes 2 hours to cross by ferry. There is a noticeable difference between Hiklarmaniga and Darkmania. Hiklarmangia for example is more protestant whereas Darkmania is more catholic. The official language of the province is Hiklarmangian. And while there are some issues with the union with Darkmania, it remains peaceful, and the Hiklarmangian Provincial Legislature has supported the tournament having games in their province.

The home of hiklarmangian hockey is the Lakossen Arene. Home to the Cerburg Hoeky Elub, it is Sërbörg and Hiklarmangia’s pride in hockey and one of the largest ones, with 15 000 in capacity. Lakossen is the name of a popular chain of hotels and an official sponsor of the tournament.

Kärmele – Gelörk Ice Hall (8 000)
Kärmele is like Anÿme but smaller and also their rival. Kärmele sadly hasn’t a lot to offer other than its iconic seaside promenades full of small shops and beaches. Kärmele is just a small seaside town located 40-minute train ride from Anÿme and is mostly known for being a “small Anÿme”. In recent times Kärmele has tried to gain its own identity and today it is seen as an up-and-coming resort town.

While Kärmele is more known for its water polo team, it has a decent ice hockey team. Kärmele Southlanders, referring to their southern location, is seen as a mid-tier team in the Eÿslüga, and their venue is also seen as mid-tier at best. It is noticeable that it is not in Kärmele but in the neighboring town of Gelörk (the venue is much closer to Kärmele town centre than Gelörk town centre) Plans for an exaptation are coming but for now, it has a capacity of 8 000. Expect plans for 10 000 in the future.

76 Beau Peterson 16 6' 0" 198 L Quebec City

Info on the centers

The Centers for this year's World Juniors have grown from 6 to 7 centers to prepare for possible line shifts and changes. That allows flexibility for the players and gives some players time to relax and rest up if needed. This is the last year for Barry, Logan, and Law. As they reach the end of their world junior careers, they hope to put up better numbers for the team and to take this team to new heights.

11 Selena Webster 19 5'10 198 L Toronto

Info on the Left Wings

The left-wingers are led by 18-year-old Sawyer lee, who plays for the Alberta Sawbucks in the CDHL. The first overall draft of the year, with 19-year-old Lewis Bear and newcomer Selena Webster, the first woman to ever join a Canadian Dominion Ice Hockey roster.

44 Quinn Rose 17 6' 2 200 L Toronto
77 Odin Mercer 16 5' 11" 197 L Sault Ste. Marie

Info on the Right Wings

Gunner McCain leads the right-wingers. Number 19 managed to get the team to the round of 16. With only one goal against Natanians and Nosts, in a 1-4 loss, this disappointing loss. The Canadian Dominion World Juniors team started to work on a more defensive idea for the right-wingers, well, still keeping their offensive poise. During practice, their chemistry with the other players has increased.

Info on the Defense

This team's defense has been through the wringer as the last world juniors, with most fans blaming the bad defense that year. When half of the defense left for the senior team, a new batch of young defensemen entered the stage. They were ready to take up the mantle and show that they had something to prove and that it would be different from last year's mishap in the round of 16.

21 George McDonald 17 5' 11" 189 L Toronto

Info on the Goalies

Lucas Bell, the hero for the mens senior team until the round of 16 shoot-out loss and with that loss he started to work on shoot-outs in practice and other important stances and more flexibility. Before returning as the WJHC goalie he played in the WCoH as a back up but saw more action when they promoted him due to the starter getting injured before the championship and with this level of experience we know that we possibly have a Canadian Dominion star!

The Anthoran National U21 Ice Hockey Team

Nickname: the Wardens
Head Coach: Hugo McClelland
Assistant Coach: Fabien Daniellson
Team Sweaters: Home, Away
Style Modifier: +3

Annual Introduction:

We return once more, as we watch Hugo McClelland and captain Victor Teodore lead the Wardens to their fifth international appearance in the WJHC, and this will undoubtedly be a make-or-break appearance for the team; this is the second to last year in McClelland's contract, and their abysmal performance in the 20th WJHC (second last in the group stage), left many a sour mouth across the Anthoran Ice Hockey Federation; it was rumored back then that the AIHF Federation President Léandre Valois had wanted to sack McClelland outright but was convinced to give him one more chance - and indeed, from what we've seein the preseason trials that the Wardens were holding across the country, it appears both he and the team are determined to recapture some lost prestige this time around.

Perhaps most notable from this is the vast more inclusion of professional players - the only starters that aren't in the Federation on 2 forwards on the 4th line, and with 4 CHL or APHL players waiting on the scratch list, only time and performance will tell if McClelland replaces them; he appears to be emphasizing offensive ability, particularly the aggressive kind, once again preferring agile two-way defenders, and potent forwards; the dropping of pro forwards Syril Lyriksen and Cailean Moss, both who underperformed last year on the ice, and the inclusion of youngsters such as Kylian Potter and Darius Hogarth are sure to bring extra buzz this year.

Roster Announcement of the U20 Ice Hockey Squad of the Da Cunha Islands

Coach: Nasíra Délić
Assistant: Vládimir Muhámedavić
Team Colours: Midnight Blue and White
Team Emblem: Two crossed red keys within a red crescent moon emblazoned on a black hockey puck
Team Nickname: The Crystal Crescents
Team Captain: Ixmaïla Drózvić (D)
Style Modifier: -4

Excerpt from the Sports News of the DCNR-1 national radio and television service:

(Radio Announcer): "And finally, the national U20 Ice Hockey team arrived in Darkmania today, preparing for their first ever appearance after a surprise run through qualifying to reach the final tournament. The team, having flown from 'Xmájlahrad yesterday, arrived in the colder climates excited and nervous for what they hope will be continued magic to lead them possibly reach the knockout stages."

Coach Nasíra Délić urged caution, though, looking on as her players took to their training facilities for the first time."

(Coach Délić): "Given that at least 8 of them expressed wonder at seeing snow for the first time upon exiting the plane, I don't think I'm being defeatist when I say that we are a bit out of our element. We've made an incredible run to get here, and they've all acclimatized pretty well to... Well, non-tropical temperatures, but let's not get overeager. We're here to fight and win games, of course, but most of all we're here to get experience, and that's the most important thing."

(Interviewing Reporter): "So not too high expectations?"

(Coach Délic): "Look, I'm just relieved Ramadan isn't for another 6 weeks. No, but for real, of course we want to win everything. That's our mentality every game. But right now the focus is on getting everyone settled in and into our normal routine for the games. Expectations, those we can't talk about until after at least one game's been played."

(Radio Announcer): "Speaking after practice, Captain Ixmaïla Drózvić said:"

(Drózvić): "Exciting ain't half of it. When I started playing this, it was on rollerblades on a wood court because we hadn't gotten an indoor arena yet. To be here now is... Yeah, thing's have gone fast these last few years, that's for sure."

(Interviewing Reporter): "So initial experience here in Darkmania? Predictions?"

(Drózvić): "Hey now, let's... Let's just land and see where we are after our first game, 'kay? As for impressions and such..." (Looks around) "Ruddy cold here, I think, haha. But hey, the ice is the same, the game is the same, and... You know, I dont see why we can't make an impression. Gotta show these people that us tropical folk can play on ice just as well as they can!"

(Radio Announcer): "The Da Cunha team will play their first game of the tournament in 4 days. Coming up in the coming hour: The weekly top 10 hit list contains new music by folk band Crvéni Móst, who visit the studio and host Fernándo Ibrahímović, who will also touch on the recent scandal surrounding tabloid coverage of Her Majesty Sabaheta the Tenth's alleged cheating at her seconday school English exam. After this..." (Signal Interrupted)

Goaltenders

After some uncertainty regarding who was actually the starting Goaltender, it has been confirmed that Gabrijéla Saladínavić will be first in the depth chart ahead of more experienced teammate Moumína Cantadúllović. Saladínavić showed great promise upon stepping in for the last three qualifiers after injuries sidelined those ahead of her, and the coaching staff has decided that further unrest between the sticks is only going to sow uncertainty. The only confirmed deviation from this norm is that Coach Délić has confirmed that 3rd stringer Élmir Jasmínavić is the preferred option on penalty shots.

16 Halílo Mézgeć 19 M R 'Xmájlahrad
14 Mutimíra Gáutçević 17 F L Alílahrad

Defensemen

Leading the Da Cunha defense will be seen as critical to team success given that Da Cunha has a preferred tactic of sitting back and standing firm before going on devastating fast breaks. The rock-solid combination of Captain Ixmaïla Drózvić and Halílo Mézgeć will be the main bulwark in this endeavour, but most of Da Cunha's defense have a non-negligible amount of experience at youth levels, though injuries have meant that the 4th line/reserve pair of Nézcovar and Çvítcović are relatively unproven and both, in fact, uncapped in any meaningful national team matches.

1st Line
Ixmaïla Drózvić (C) - Halílo Mézgeć

80 Ajíxa Béjbl 17 F L Cragújevacqs

Centers

With Da Cunha's centers effective playing as a third, slightly forward-placed defenseman, first choice Ajíxa Béjbl will be expected to be able to navigate a crowded defense and be the primary passer to send the Cunhani wingers forward when a counter-attacking opportunity arises. Behind her, 2nd line captain Gordána Bózcović is the most attacking option and the best suited for traditional attacking play, while the two older players on the 3rd and 4th lines of Stáncović and Gordánavić are expected to be part of effectively a shut-down defense.

35 Zahíra Núrhavić 16 F R Mútimirpole

Left Wingers

Da Cunha's left wing is packed with exciting youngsters in the lower lines and two less exciting, but solid and dependable options in the first lines. Cózmić is generally accepted to be the best overall package on the left, even though Núrhavić is expected to usurp the starting spot at some point after gaining some more experience. The left is anchored by the experienced Saiphuddínović, who is by far the least attacking of the bunch and adept at slotting into a defense formation when her center pushes forward.

Right Wingers

The right wing of Da Cunha is dominated by the team's two top scorers through qualifying: 3rd line captain Callísta Mehmedbáçić and teen phenom and the brightest talent in the entire archipelago, 1st liner Abáxa Qasimbéjavić. In between these two, the experience of Taymúravić and Phaitúllović complete what is probably the strongest position for Da Cunha. The speed of their two top scorers is the main thing which propelled the tropical melanesian archipelago into their first tournament finals at any level in the first place.

OOC Notes
Interpret names as Slavic pronounced, but spelt as if transcribed by someone with a vague conception of Portuguese was interfering all over the place with the consonants.

The people of Da Cunha are canonically Melanesian in skin tone, eye colors and general build, but Slavic-esque in facial structure and hair color. In case anyone finds that sort of thing useful for their roleplaying.

Hockey Cordia Under-19 National Team

The Cordian National Team Development Program picks out the top Cordian high school hockey players to play for the National Academy in Eriksson. These players have gone through a fairly tough season, playing against the other major Cordian academies in a 28-game season which, of course, they won in resounding fashion as any player in Cordia would go to the National Academy if given the chance. They also faced off many times against professional and semiprofessional teams from Cordia’s hockey pyramid, faring quite well in those as well. But there’s one thing that few players on this team have had the chance to do: wear the uniform of the National Team instead of the National Academy, and play on the international stage.

Three of the players, however, have had those opportunities. All three of them now seniors, all three of them having spent four years playing for the Academy, including three for the U19s, their names will almost certainly be those best remembered from this squad. Ragnvald Nyberg is an incredible two-way player in the mold of Jennifer Vosun, one of the biggest players on the team and with the customary Cordian physicality. Teams with a defensive tradition are already getting into line to sign him the moment he graduates, and he is rumored to be one of the top candidates to fill in at LW for the national team in the upcoming World Cup of Hockey. Urban Bergqvist is a center, a bit on the small side, but he makes up for it with grit and game sense. He is expected to lead the team in goals not because of his shot or his speed, but his ability to read the play like no other. He doesn’t sacrifice on the defensive end, either. Rather, he is rarely if ever found out of position and will complement Nyberg nicely. Several top sides are taking a look at the Brenville native, and he is also considered a fringe candidate for the National Team’s upcoming World Cup of Hockey campaign. Last but certainly not least is Siw Gustafsson. A powerful defenseman with a shot to match, she is in the mold of the Leifssen brothers, first-liners for the Cordian national team for the last five tournaments. She may even have a brighter future, and like Bergqvist is considered a fringe candidate for the National Team on the defensive side.

The team also features no less than two sixteen-year-old players, Tullia Akerman and Nadia Lungren. They have both done well over the course of the regular season against players far older than them and earned their spots on the team. They may not be the top contributors this tournament, but look ahead. They could very well be the future of Cordian hockey.

Hockey in Cordia is by far the most popular sport in the nation. With a strong development program and youth system, young Cordian players are entering the professional ranks younger and faster than ever before. The national league is the Cordian National Hockey Championship. The reigning league champions are Cordasfjord Central. Cordian hockey as coached by Kress "Terrible" Thomassen is exceptionally aggressive, trading defensive mistakes for offensive chances, relying on a strong forecheck to keep the puck out of their own zone. Players are expected to play a physical game; expect hits, but mostly to make the play. Petty penalties may happen, especially in rough losses. Oh, and you'll hear plenty of trash talk on the ice. A true Cordian talks a good game. Even inside their own zone, Cordian forwards will cheat up at the first sign of possession, a risky move that leaves men on both teams open and can work either way. As a result, the WCoH Federation rates Cordia's playstyle a +3.5.

Many Cordian hockey fans will be stopping at a place considered hallowed ground before they enter Darkmania. Not too far to the southwest is Mercedini, the nation that hosted World Cup of Hockey 46, which saw the Cordians take their only senior world title in a roller coaster of a playoff run that saw each game decided by either a single goal, overtime, or a shootout. With many of the players from that victory reaching retirement age, this U19 squad is being looked at closely as the future of Cordian hockey, with several players already being considered for the senior team. It's stacked with talent and players that have spent the entire year playing top domestic academies and clubs from Cordia's professional scene. They may be U19s, but they know what it's like to play against opponents older than them and that may work to their advantage in this tournament, which features players as old as 20 whereas the oldest player on the Cordian roster is 18.

Regardless of the outcome, it's sure to be a fun ride. Without further ado, here are the newest Cordian uniforms, ready for their international debut:

Systems

OOC: These are more guidelines than rules, but if you ever want to talk about systems and how you plan to counter them, here they are.
Forecheck: The Cordian forecheck. One player pressures the opposing defensemen while other players cover all other players so that the other team is left with no options.
Image

Even Strength Defensive Zone: Below the tops of the circles is man-on-man play; above them is zone play. Important: If an opposing player moves from above to below or vice-versa, their defender will follow.
Image

Breakout: Pull-system breakout, used to create either a defensive panic or a 1-on-0 advantage. The weakside winger begins skating as soon as they see that the team has possession; strongside wing and center set up in typical breakout procedure, with the added option of a speeding weakside winger.
Image

Powerplay: The 1-3-1. The idea is to get either a shot from the slot, a cross-ice pass for a shot, or a shot for a rebound and a scramble in front of the net. More experienced players will get more powerplay time; that's why line and pair 3 are listed for the second unit.
Powerplay Unit 1: Line 1 Forwards / Pair 1 Defensemen
Powerplay Unit 2: Line 3 Forwards / Pair 3 Defensemen
Image

4-man Penalty Kill: Box or Diamond, depending on the opposing powerplay system. The idea is to not overcommit so as to not allow shots from the inside; shots from the outside are unavoidable.
Penalty Kill Unit 1: Nyberg - Bergqvist / Gustafsson - Rehnquist
Penalty Kill Unit 2: Bruun - Heidenstam / Blomqvist - Skold
Image

3-man Penalty Kill: Triangle or Right Triangle, depending on opposing powerplay system. In a Right Triangle, rather than the point player moving back and forth during perimeter passing, the entire formation rotates, with the opposite defensemen instead moving up, the same-side defenseman moving over, and the point player moving back.
3-man PK Unit 1: Nyberg / Gustafsson - Rehnquist
3-man PK Unit 2: Bergqvist / Blomqvist - Skold

The Cordian National Team Development Program

The Cordian NTDP is the way through which the nation's top youth players are identified and then trained to become elite hockey players. The identification begins in high school. Each high school sports league (generally around 8 schools) sends its ten best players from each class (i.e. freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors) as determined by internal process to a district-wide talent camp (there are 4 teams in a district) in early January. Those ten players comprise six forwards, four defensemen, and two goalies. District camp is quite intense. Players are split into two teams and the schedule usually features three practices to develop and showcase skills and then three games to see how players do in real situations. After this, selections are made to determine which players advance to the next level. Some districts send as few as four players per class, others as many as twenty-five. This number depends on past performance in the regional and national levels and is determined at the annual Hockey Cordia congress. The selected players advance to the regional level.

There are four regional camps, each one fielding 60 players per class. With 60 players, the players are divided into three teams and the schedule gets a bit more complicated. There are only two practices, and then four games per team with each team playing the others twice apiece. All of this is done over the course of five days. From here, players will again advance, this time to the national level. The Northwest region sends twenty-eight players, the Fjords region twenty-three, the Northeast nineteen, and the Plains send ten players as of the most recent count.

The National Camp is a massive event, taking place at Eriksson's Academy Arena, home of the National Academy. Legions of fans and scouts will watch the top eighty high school hockey players from each class battle it out, each hoping for a spot on the national team. The schedule features only games, each player participating in one a day. After three days, each class will be cut down to 40. Three more days of games follow before the final decisions are made.

The freshman class' best twenty players will make the Under-17 team, and every once in a while an exceptional player or two will make the Under-19s as a freshman - see the current Cordian U19 roster. From the sophomores and juniors, usually around ten per class will receive the chance to try out for a spot on the Under-19 squad. Most years, around five juniors and two or three sophomores will get a roster spot. For the seniors, the National Camp amounts to a showcase. Happening a couple months before the start of the Cordian professional hockey season, many will receive offers from Cordian professional sides. For the rest of the players that didn't make teams, top city academies from around Cordia will come calling, asking them to try out or even offering a roster spot outright. The academies produce most of the players going to the CNHC, the top level of Cordian hockey, that aren't from the NTDP. They are separate from the normal high school hockey system, as they are permitted to recruit players.

For those that make the team, the grind has only just begun. They will receive entry to Eriksson's National Academy, where they will be forced to balance hockey and elite academics. Hockey, of course, is the priority. State of the art training programs and facilities, games against professional and rival academy teams, and a brutal conditioning program that includes a stint running on the Academy's track team are some of the ways the NTDP keeps its players on top of their game. From those twenty players that make the team after their freshman year, less than eight on average graduate to the Under-19 squad, caught between cuts to keep space for the rising seniors and competition from those who didn't make the team in their first year.

The current Cordian U19 team features seven players from last year's U17s, and two who made the team this season as rising juniors. Those cuts lead to massive competition within the U17 squad, though it's also a bonding experience for those who make it though, and friendships are made in that year that last a lifetime (or at least the eight years in which the program has been operating). The U19 team, of course, will play at the World Juniors every other year, showcasing its players on the international stage. Inevitably, the graduates of the program will sign with top CNHC clubs, with their resume featuring years of competition at the highest possible levels. Almost all of the recent additions to the Cordian national team, as well, are graduates of the NTDP. It is ultimately a program that has massive benefits for the strength and depth of the Cordian hockey talent. It will be tested in the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships, though given the massive talent pool for Cordian hockey and the experience of the top players in this squad, a strong performance is expected from the Under-19s.

Review:
After an unsuccessful campaign during the last WJHC, Damian Pasikonik was fired, and Krzysztof Zakała, a fairly experienced Hockey coach, took his place, the main thing that spoke in favor of hiring Zakała was that he was recommended by Adam Król, the current coach of the senior national team and former coach of the youngsters with whom he has been most successful so far. Krzysztof's style is very similar to that of Król, it's all about strength, speed and courage. As for the players, this will be the last season of the Woźniak brothers who made their debut in the senior national team, as well as several other players. As for the new faces on the team, Bazyli Lasecki, Julio Costa and Ivan Valdés little is known about them Lasecki and Costa were members of their local AZS and are preparing for the Ultraliga Draft, while Ivan is said to be a top prospect from the south of the country.

DARKMANIA JUNIOR

Image

The darkmanian uses a flag as their icon and it's called "The Darkmanian Hockey Flag".

Not only did the darkmanain junior team manage to win the 20th World Junior Hockey Championships but since they also are the host nation for the 21st World Junior Hockey Championships expatriation has never been higher for the junior team, who now has more championships wins compared to their senior counterpart. Since the last tournament, several players have either been cut or gone to play at the senior team. Despite this most of the elements have been retained and we even see some players who were in the gold team taking part at home soil. For some of the players seeing their home venues are just a valid reason to build up their career.

Despite being a warm Pacific Island nation, not only is ice hockey the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], but they've also been quite a considerable force in it.The men's national side was a dominant side that won three World Cups of Hockey (29, 31 and 35), finished runners-up twice (30 and 32), finished third twice (28 and 37) and finished fourth once (34); however, this dominant streak would be cut short following their group stage exit at the 38th edition that also saw the EIHB withdraw from the World Cup of Hockey Federation due to some controversial goings on during that tournament. A B-team was assembled for the 12th Winter Olympics, where they not only won the gold medal (something the A-team would fail to achieve when they gave it a try the following contest) but there was also the whirlwind romance between third line right defenceman Jay Bailey and Kelly Morgenstern, a skier from Mount Pleasant, that sadly came to an end when they had to go their separate ways following the end of the tournament, especially as ice hockey's essentially non-existant in the latter's home country and she didn't want to leave. The junior team, however, hasn't seen much success, with a decent fourth place finish in their debut at the 8th edition before a plethora of group stage exits before they finally made the quarter-finals of the 15th WJHC where they fell 1-0 to Kelssek. Hopefully they can carry on not sucking despite being absent for a few tournaments.

Built in 1989, the Coventry City Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena, especially in situations where HomeFiller isn't sponsoring the event in question. With a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins; the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and home to the Coventry Nets basketball team. Following the end of a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller, one that had been ongoing since 2013, they reverted to their old name while they wait for a new sponsor.

Home to the Rosetta Royals (Rosate Royal) ice hockey team and backup stadium to the Junior and U-18 ice hockey teams. It was also the home to the Rosetta Devils (Rosate Dafil) basketball team until they moved to Devils Stadium (Dafil Sataed) in 2014. About 14,000 people can sit down and watch a hockey game; fortunately, Rosetta is a bilingual tract (both English and Iyilim are spoken here), meaning fans don't have to worry about learning a second language to find their way around.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes (but nothing too serious; one person at a time and they can't be out for anything longer than two games. Killing is definitely out)
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes (same as above)
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes (again, one person per game and the longest they can be suspended for is one match)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is. Fighting I'm OK with but it might be a good idea to TG anything else.

  • Please get back to me with RP info by 10pm BST. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and put my own stuff in.
  • If you wish to include a fight, then players who would be up for that are Dominic Schneider (in the case of a goalie fight), Mark Robertson, Dustin Petersen, the entire fourth line (Mical Eritinal, Duncan Kubitsky and Duardo Lascano) and Steve Ryan. Everyone else might but only in the case of a line or bench-clearing brawl (and even then Álex Gricenko will only fight in self-defence).
  • Feel free to draft my university players into your team, although be aware that they won't play in your league until they graduate (fortunately, they're all on 3-year courses). Those in a Youth team already associated with a professional ENIHL team can also be drafted and can play in your leagues no problem.
  • Ronaldo and Roberto Céspedes are both twin brothers, with Ronaldo being the older brother by an hour and a half. Much like Felipe and Danilo Barajas on the senior team, they prefer to play for the same team so if they do take your interest make sure you pick them both up. If you decide to draft them see if you're able to pick up both but they won't complain if you can't draft them both.
  • Gabriel and Nathaniel Schottenheimer are also brothers; however, they're a bit more independent so feel free to pick up or draft one or the other. They won't mind playing for separate teams or even in separate countries.

A Short Biography of Sebastien Dupont
In his Atlantian Oceania Grand Prix debut at Cocoabo Park Circuit, Lacfroidois driver Sebastien Dupont made headlines by finishing on the podium despite starting in last place on the grid. Currently sitting fifth in the driver’s standings, one place behind his White Unicorns Racing teammate, onetime AOGP champion Gus Perry, Dupont has been the surprise of the season, racking up a race win at the Dyrrhonian Isles Short Track Challenge. With that win, Dupont joins the short list of Lacfroidois who’ve won at the regional level, including a few from the most recent winter AOlympics, but who is the mysterious athlete?

At twenty-three years old, Dupont is older than the average rookie in open-wheeled racing, though he is not exactly a stranger to the sport. As a freshman at Universite du Sciences et Technologie in Raleigh, he joined in the school’s Formula Student club, which is the evergreen Formula Student champion of Lacfroid. He was selected as the team’s driver all four years both for his work ethic and the natural aptitude he displayed on the track. His ability later caught the attention of Lacfroidois mainstay H&V foods, which inked a sponsorship deal and negotiated an AOGP drive with White Unicorn Racing.

Dupont graduated S&T last year with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and intends to work toward his master’s when he returns from the AOGP season. In his summers, he completed the coveted Arnaud internships, working with the best engineering minds in Lacfroid. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tabletop miniature games and real-time strategy games including Astra Domina and Galactic Conquest. Asked about a future in motorsports, Dupont laughs and says he’ll take it one season at a time, though he wouldn’t mind returning to AOGP if they’ll have him.

It had been a while.

Their last bout at the World Junior Hockey Championships wasn't exactly a bad run. A plethora draws (2-2 against Sarzonia, 1-1 against Græntfjall and another 1-1 against Kohnhead) were mildly disappointing, yes. But eventually they were allowed to win a game and, even better, it was their fourth game. 2-1 against Tikariot, even though the Junior Ice-a-phants had been trailing 1-0 for most of the match and wouldn't find the net until the third period. This was then followed by a 4-3 win over Susuvi before they absolutely thrashed Savojarna, 7-2. While they sadly went on to lose their last match of the group stage, 3-1 to Terre Septentrionale, they had already qualified at that point so it didn't really matter that much. After a 3-2 win in their rematch against Sarzonia, they were up against fellow TEPers Kelssek in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, that was where they had bowed out after being shut out 1-0. But hey, it was still an excellent showing for a team that had frequently sucked at the WJHC. Plus, in true Elejamian fashion, their conquerors went on to lose in the next round by going down 5-2 to eventual tourney champions Anthor.

There was one small issue, though. That was three years ago. All of the players who had played on that team had since "graduated", for lack of a better word. Hell, Adrian Backer's playing for the senior team whereas Lorna Peterson is now the backup goalie for the women's team. Everyone else is either doing alright in the ENIHL but haven't received a call-up yet, is playing abroad, is languishing in the ENIHL2 and would probably have more of a chance playing for the B-team if it ever gets assembled again, or in the case of fourth-line left winger Shaun Danielewicz, hung up their skates to concentrate on a proper job. They could've taken part in the WJHCs that had taken part since then but whether it be due to a lack of communication on everyone's part or a lack of interest from the EIHB they were just completely absent. In other words, they had to start from square one. Again

At least the coaching staff from that contest were still kicking. Most of them were busy elsewhere, like Andy Bailey coaching the Avon Stars Youth side and the legendary Antonio "Toni" Cervantes stepping in as a goalie coach for his beloved Ángeles de la Playa de Rocas, the team where he had spent his entire career and the team that had retired his #1 jersey the season after he retired. But a couple of quick phone calls and they were back in action and ready to coach, assist with coaching, coach the goalies (albeit primarily in Spanish) and heal up any cuts, scrapes and bruises they may receive. All they needed were players. They were the most vital part of a team, after all.

A quick scouring of the ENJIHL and University League later, along with them picking up a guy in the ENIHL2 who was still in the age range, they got their men. Obviously you've got to have a Hispano-Elejamian goalie and they've got their man in Álex Gricenko, who matched the shut-out record in his first University League season with Universidad de la Playa de Rocas with eight (out of 26 games). Of course his back-up in Dominic Schneider is no slouch either and he's also put up some impressive stats in his few seasons so far. They've got two dual-threats in defence with ENJIHL Defenceman of the Year Dustin Morrison and runner-up Mark Robertson on the first line, whereas the quarter-Achaean Ronaldo and Roberto Céspedes occupy the second line. The first pair have some stellar offensive capabilities and aren't afraid to get up front, whereas the Céspedes twins are fairly strong and sturdy defensive defencemen, capable of delivering crushing checks inside their part of the ice. The third pair of Chris Newman and Gabriel Schottenheimer are also quite decent and can do a decent job at keeping the puck out of the net, but not to the same extent as the first two pairs.

Offensively they got some good pieces as well. Carlos Archetula, who's also doing double duty as the captain, is a sniper who can be quite deadly at a distance, although this is mitigated by the fact that he's less of a threat close-up. Gabriel Schottenheimer's younger brother Nathaniel may be a playmaker but he's quite a good all-rounder who can score with the best of them, deliver decent checks and isn't too shabby defensively. Dustin Petersen is a power forward and quite a good one too, he's essentially a younger Ethan Swinburne but with a bit more speed and skill. Félix Carneiro also a nifty little player, using his 5' 5" height and light weight advantage to zip down the ice, win face-offs, snatch up the puck and set things up for his teammates. And Francisco Armenteros is a good two-way forward who can make his way down the ice and then make the return trip back when the other team have the puck without breaking a sweat. And, of course, there's the fourth line where it's all grit, all grind. Even more so if you have an Iyilim on your side like Mical Eritinal (who's also playing for his hometown Aloc IHT in the ENIHL 2) for some true Polynesian grit. Everyone else, including the scratches, are fairly decent players but because this paragraph would be too long or because I can't think of any more information I've decided not to include their info here. But that doesn't mean that I won't do that in future RPs.

OK, now the builders have finished repairing the fourth wall, we return to Andy Bailey and his team. They had a good amount of success in the warm-ups games, where they had played a wide array of University League and ENJIHL players, a number of whom had at least one of their players playing for the national junior team. Out of the ten games they had played the Junior Ice-a-phants had won seven in regulation, won one in OT and lost the other two (3-2 to Universidad de la Playa de Rocas, and 2-0 to the Davenport Dockers Youth). There was also a game against an ENIHL2 all-star team but, since they had a mixture of foreign and domestic players on their side, it didn't really count as a return of the B-team; either way, the juniors won that 4-1 thanks to Archetula scoring two goals (and assisting a third) and one each from Armenteros and Paul Gualtieri. A decent showing all-round and, while there were a few kinks as you'd expect from a new squad who hadn't played together before, they were mostly ironed out over the course of the whole thing.

And so, with that, it was time to travel over to Darkmania and do this thing. There were six groups of four, with the top two and four best third-placers going through to the elimination stage. And Elejamie were in Group F, the final one. It didn't seem to be too difficult a group, with their opener against the rather Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove (or SJJ for short) being a possible win. After that will be United Hawkland, which will probably go the same way if they play their cards right and everyone keeps their heads. It's only the match against Dod Rava, the only other team in the group that Andy knows anything about, that'd be a real cause for concern. Of course, there's the possibility that they might all defecate the metaphorical bed and go down in one or both of those first games but everyone was mildly confident that that wouldn't happen. Not unless another referee got bribed.

Anything else worth noting? Yes. Group A seemed to be a bit stacked with hosts and also reigning champs Darkmania, Anthor and Patriotlandia having to battle each other and lowly Aust Scor for a spot in the next round. Fellow IBAers Britonisea and the Huron League were in Group D alongside old-time rivals Quebec and Shingoryeo as well as newcomers Erbenburg. Group B had the Canadian Dominion up against HUElavia, Hofn and Serdtgyu. Group C was essentially Cordia and Da Cunha with Sherpus and the Ohio Men there to fill up the numbers. And Group E was Kimi-Suomi (a familiar team to anyone who keeps an eye on the World Cup of Hockey) vs. Lacfroid vs. Domacria vs. New Eestiball. All in all, a possibly fun excursion with some decent teams and maybe a few shocks and surprises in store.

It's just making sure that the Junior Ice-a-phants aren't on the wrong end of those.

Canadian Dominion goes for gold in the WJHC!

The Canadian Dominion hockey team is gearing up for the highly anticipated World Juniors tournament with a strong sense of determination. This year's team is facing a unique challenge as most of the players will soon be leaving to pursue opportunities in the professional CDHL league or other aspects of their careers. Additionally, two players from the team have been chosen to go to the CNHC league in The Cordian Isle notibly these players are Bradley Walker and George McDonald. With these factors in mind, the pressure is on for Canadian Dominion to make their mark at this year's tournament. The phrase "do or die" aptly captures the mindset of the team as they strive for gold. Knowing that this may be their last chance to compete together before transitioning into different playing environments lends an added urgency and motivation. As well the prospects for success are high as Canadian Dominion enters the World Juniors with a fire underneath their program. The players are determined to showcase their skills and make a lasting impression on scouts and fans alike. Whether it's through strategic plays, teamwork, or sheer passion on the ice, they are fully committed to leaving it all out there and aiming for nothing less than gold. To make sure that they get a better spot in the draft and come up in 4th place last year, to finally get some placement on the podium and it seems as if it will be a harder road to the finals with Cordia and Elejamie participating in the tournament.

Da Cunha Records First WC Goal, Win, Beat Ohio Men 1-0

The Crystal Crescents of Da Cunha skedaddled out of their first ever world cup finals game with a 1-0 score in regulation time at the stadium in Kärmele. Players and coaching staff celebrated this accomplishment as the clock ran out, with players mobbing goaltender Saladínavić, who made several crucial saves in the final 5 minutes to maintain the narrow lead.

The Crystal Crescents started out nervously, playing deep and seemed satsified with letting the Ohio Men take charge of the game, repulsing attempts at getting close on goal with stubborn determination. The Crescents didn't really threaten much going forward until 5 minutes remained of the first period, when Aymára Saiphuddínović flashed a shot over the top of the goal from 5 yards out. On the other end, team captain Drózvić and her defensive partner Mézgeć led a defensive effort which had clearly decided not to take any prisoners, but which escaped penalties until Ferdinánda Muhammédavić got called for high sticking in the dying seconds of the first period.

Da Cunha came out for the second period at a disadvantage, one which the Ohio Men almost capitalised on numerous times, but which were thwarted by a concerted team effort. However, when the power play ended, Da Cunha's 3rd line found themselves still tied at 0-0. Now at full capacity, the Crystal Crescents took advantage of an extra man and slowly fought their way into the game, beginning to establish territory further forward. Belief seemed to be growing, replacing the nervy sentiment of the first period. Coach Délić were encouraging her team on, at one point heard shouting at her wingers to "Get at them! They aren't as tough as they seem!"

The payoff came halfway through the 2nd period. Ixmaïla Drózvić stole the puck from an Ohioan winger and started a lightning counter-move. The Ohio Men team seemed to focus in on Da Cunha's top scorer, right winger Abáxa Qasimbéjavić, who were the quickest up the rink and received a pass from Drózvić close to perpendicular to the Ohio goal. The defenders were clearly expecting Qasimbéjavić to cut in, but instead, spotting the defensive shift, Qasimbéjavić threaded a cross back in front of goal and into the path of Center Ajíxa Béjbl, who chipped the puck past the goaltender and giving Da Cunha the lead, sparking jubilation on the sidelines from the travelling fans.

Despite pushing for a bumper goal and having multiple chances through the 2nd period, Da Cunha failed to capitalise on any other counter-attacks, with Osmanbája Cózmić sticking out as having a particularly bad night with 3 badly scuffed shots in quick succession as time expired on the 2nd period. Da Cunha tried to keep on pressure at the start of the 3rd period, but a contested penalty for Mézgeć put Da Cunha on the back foot, and when they came back to full power, they had lost momentum and spent the last 8 minutes of the game pushed deep into their own half. It seemed to be a matter of time before Ohio would equalise.

However, the Da Cunha defense held firm, and Saladínavić made several heroic saves to keep out the puck. As frustration started to set in for the Ohio Men, a few players got penalties for hits on the Da Cunha defense, including one which sparked injury concerns for Mutimíra Gáutçević as she had to exit the game with what looked like a sprained ankle, but these frustration also hampered Ohio's efforts to find the leveler, and in the end, they ran out of time. With Da Cunha's players celebrating on the ice, the word that most didn't dare speak of before the game now suddenly seemed to appear everywhere. That was a win. That was a goal... What about 'Advancement', then?

Coach Drózvić' post-match comments
"I am so proud of the team, every girl and boy out there. They fought like threshers out there, and this is such a good way to start our tournament. It wasn't perfect, there are definitely things to work on, but this is a good base to build on. We had fears that we were gonna be a team that showed up and got sent packing, but this gives us some real belief in ourselves, and that confidence boost is worth every single fix I have to think of right now. What a night!"

Interview with goalscorer and matchwinner Ajíxa Béjbl
"I mean, even though we practice doing these fast breaks, when you see Abáxa go down the right, you have to hustle to follow. I got some separation in the middle, but I saw the pass come out to Abáxa and I thought 'She's going to go for it on her own'. I did not think she would send it in towards me because she has been so good in qualifying. But yeah, no, it just came in and I got a clean hit on the puck and... I mean, I don't think I can repeat what I said when it went in, haha..."

"This is... I mean, we'll see where we go from here, but we can go up, surely. The other match had a lot of goals, which is a bit scary, but it also means they leave space in the back. Maybe we can exploit that, you know? We'll go home and hold Íxa now, and then we'll see what happens. We can go far, Inxállah."

The Youth Movement (Eventually)

Postby Kimi-Suomi » Sat Aug 05, 2023 2:30 pm

You know the Leijonat...so here are the Leijonanpennut. For a while now, there has been a deep desire from the Kimi-Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto (KSJ) for there to be a Kimi-Suomi youth program, a pathway for the next generation of hockey talent to develop themselves before moving on to bigger and better things in the WCoH itself. Originally, it was thought that the NSHC, the collegiate hockey competition, would be the place for us to develop our stars...but that seemingly hasn't gone off the ground and so instead, we're here in Pimeämaninen (Darkmania) for our debut WJHC, the U20 tournament that is played in alternating years with the WCoH. Josefin Hjalmarsson, the Assistant Coach of the Leijonat, has been tasked with leading this team for this debut campaign and has assembled the finest young talent we can muster in order to try and make a name for ourselves. There are certainly some interesting names in this selection, but how would this unit do in their first-ever game together?

Well up first in our new journey would be Lacfroid, "Les Chenilles Bleus", and this introduction into this new frontier would be filled with chaos and deservedly so. Our opponents would score twice in Q1 through Sandro Moine and Jessy Vallee but we would get one back through Sergei Mazkruin. In Q2 we would find an equaliser through Renate-Ly Mehevets but Marwan Aubry would give Lacfroid the lead once again. That lead would be extended in the 3rd thanks to Moine and while Olli Räsänen did get one back, it wouldn't be enough to overturn the result. Lacfroid would end up with the 4-3 victory and while we did lose, we also learned a lot about our players and what they can certainly do.

We still have two more games to go and considering how MD1 went, a win isn't too hard to ask for...right? NOSTA KUIN LEIJONANPENNUT!

High School Hockey

Part of the reason the National Team Development Program is so effective is the amount of youth talent in Cordia. Almost every kid tries hockey at one point or another, and the top athletes are pushed towards a career in hockey. Public school-based teams are available starting as young as 5, with competitive play beginning at 9. It's around then that the legend begins with tales of championships, rivalry games, and the stardom of playing for the school team handed down from older to younger siblings or even across generations.

The grind for many players begins in January with the NTDP camps, occurring just after the season ends in late December. After the camps, players will train on their own or join up with a club team. CIub teams, often run by pro clubs, will play in tournaments across the nation bout are not as prestigious as High School Nationals despite presenting a better opportunity for scouting and being the closest senior clubs will get to having an actual youth program due to the school-based nature of the Cordian hockey system.

The club season ends in April, signaling the start of the hockey offseason. Many players will run track, also a quite popular sport in Cordia, over the summer for conditioning. Others will catch as much ice time as they can, and many will do both. Regardless of how they get there, tryouts for the high school team own the first week of September, followed by two weeks of practice leading up to the September Showcase, a 32-team tournament hosted by each district. After that, it's on to a 22-game regular season with 14 league games and 2 to 3 games a week. At the end of the season, the top 4 teams in each league advance to the single-elimination playoffs. League playoff champions advance to the District level with no break. District champions advance to the Regional level, held in conjunction with Nationals as a 16-team tournament in Cordasfjord’s Central Arena over seven days beginning the Saturday after the end of Districts.

The culture around high school hockey in Cordia is incredible. Several hundred fans from each side can be expected for the average regular season matchup, and thousands for playoff games. At the National Tournament, Central Arena hits max capacity for nearly every game, and the tournament is shown on national television from the Regional Championships onwards. A school's top players become very popular, in the point of being notable members of the community as a whole. When they go to nationals, smaller communities will be all but emptied, everyone having traveled to watch. With schools normally in the waning days of the year, many will stop instruction in the middle of the day to watch their team at Nationals. In Cordasfjord itself, it's near impossible to get a hotel for a solid week, and still not easy in the outlying suburbs. A documentary about the tournament, "Nattys", has been going strong for a decade and is generally among the top, if not the top, show in the nation when it releases. National Team coach Kress Thomassen put it best: "If the national team is the heart of Cordian hockey, High School Nationals are the soul."

Despite all of this, the Cordian high of school hockey apparatus has faced some serious challenges, the main one being losing its best players to the NTDP and Academies, where they generally have more opportunities in hockey, with a separate league and . While some high school players will still make the jump to the CNHC, most ot those aided by the club system, the academy system simply allows for more experience and dedicated training, making the jump far easier for academy players. While Hockey Cordia has made some attempts to close that gap, including sponsoring club tournaments and subsidizing some costs for club players, the system ultimately benefits Hockey Cordian, its development program, and the National Team, so any attempt to fully level the playing field will be met with fierce resistance.

High school hockey may no longer be the great showcase and center of talent that it once was in Cordia, but it remains the center of so many lives and communities in a way that is rarely found elsewhere. For the current national teamers, their love for hockey didn't stem from watch a national team game or even a local CNHC team. It started as a little kid watching the local heroes go up against those from the next neighborhood or town over, and wanting to be like them, to score and defend and make plays with their community behind them, supporting them. Even today, that part of Cordian high school hockey is alive and well.

"Ah, here it comes like a scene in Genesis."

Elejamian coach Andy Bailey was incredibly happy with his side. Sure it wasn't entirely perfect, namely one goal that was waved off for being offside even though it didn't really seem to be offside. And another that was ruled out because the net had become dislodged, something that was kind of hard to argue against since it had very clearly come loose. But hey, a win was a win and Andy would take that any day of the week. Especially if it was a 4-1 victory and especially if it was against a team that his side had never played before in any capacity. Those warm-up games had definitely served their purpose.

Going into the match against Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove, or SJJ as they shall be referred to from now on, Andy was feeling confident. His team had shown that they were willing to repeat if not surpass the success of three years ago, they had a decent run in their warm-up games even if they were teams his men had played with in one way or another or were in their local vicinity, and training seemed to go well with everyone doing what they needed to do with little to no issues. Warm-ups went relatively well as well. And, rather fortunately, they managed to find a list of players in time so they knew who they were up against and how to act accordingly. All in all, everything was in place and everyone was ready to kick things off.

Things were a bit slow to begin with, as it took just under a minute before one side was able to get a shot on goal thanks to some stellar defending from both sides. Surprisingly, it was SJJ who fired the first shot, with Shane Krawczyk's wirst shot for the Tapirs easily landing in Álex Gricenko's glove. The Junior Ice-a-phants then had a go of their own shortly afterwards with Paul Gualtieri attempting to get one in with a well-timed one-timer from Nathaniel Schottenheimer's pass. It seemed like it was about to go in but Marilou Meunier just managed to get a glove to it before she threw herself down and froze the puck to force a face-off. Perfect timing too, since it gave both teams an opportunity to changes lines and perhaps pairings without having to worry about leaving themselves defenceless. It was essentially a sign of what was to come throughout the period, where both sides had plenty of opportunities to open up the scoring but some solid defending and goaltending pretty much put a halt to that. Even a penalty on each side (a Gabriel Schottenheimer minor for slashing and an Anne-Charlotte Poisson minor for hooking) couldn't really give either side much of an advantage. Nor did the aforementioned offside with 11:09 left help much, the one where captain Carlos Archetula's slapshot from the point was ruled out because Paul Gualtieri had just passed the blue line first.

Eventually, there were two goals in a fairly quick succession... just as long as you ignore the end of period intermission that happened at some point in between them. With 2:01 left in the first, Elejamie managed to get the first goal of the match, thanks to Francisco Armenteros snatching up the puck from Xavier Guillaume in the neutral zone before passing it over to Dustin Petersen, who essentially charged his way down the ice while he played a passing game with Félix Carneiro. Carnerio then passed the puck over to Armenteros, whose first attempt hit the crossbar and second attempt bounced off of Meunier's pads but fortunately Petersen skated in and fired in one at close range to give his side a 1-0 lead. The second goal came with 18:58 left on the clock and saw a massive scramble in front of the SJJ net, with one side trying to get it in and the other trying to clear it before the puck slide down the ice and into the path of Junior Ice-a-phants defenceman Mark Robertson, who them passed it over to Archetula. One well-timed and well-aimed shot later, the puck slipped over Meunier's glove and into the back of the net. Then there was the scene with 9:44 left where the net was dislodged just as Armenteros was about to score a goal of his own but we don't talk about that.

The next actual goal came with 6:11 left, but it was in SJJ's favour. It was after a series of face-offs where the Tapirs were trying their darndest to put the puck past Gricenko but either came up short or were easily stopped by Gricenko or by one of his defencemen. The only consolation for SJJ was that they were on the power play thanks to Joey Kortajarena cross-checking Cédric Mailloux but even then that was coming to an end. There were only a handful of seconds left before their opponents would be back to full strength and so it was essentially a do or die situation. Eventually, there was one more face-off. Charlotte Bartoszkiewicz won it for her team and passed it over to Louis-Alexandre Gratton. He skated into a better position and fired it at the net. No such luck. Bartoszkiewicz had a go of her own as the puck had rebounded into her path. Bounced harmlessly off of Gricenko's pads. Gratton had another go and just simply tipped it in. That did the trick and, with only three seconds left on the clock before Elejamie were due to return to full strength, SJJ had managed to pull one back. Even better since they managed to keep the puck out of the net through the rest of the period, even if they were unable to put another one in.

The sad news for SJJ was that would end up being their only goal in the match. Even sadder, they would allow two more in the third. The first came with 13:42 left, with a poorly-timed pass from Bartoszkiewicz to Guillaume ended up in the latter being checked by Dustin Petersen, who managed to snatch up the puck and make his way down the ice. He made his way past Félix Beausoleil and managed to pass the puck over to Armenteros who now found himself on the breakaway. He skated up the ice and essentially forced Meunier to concentrate on him, just so that he could then pass it over to Petersen who'd fire it in off the one-timer and bury it into the back of the net to make it 3-1. And the second was with 5:07 left, with Dan Cohen, Adrián Nuñez Jr. and Kortajarena playing a passing game until Cohen managed to sneak in a quick shot through Meunier's five-hole. Nothing too exciting but it was still enough to seal the deal.

One game down, now it's just a matter of looking at the next game. And it looked like it'd be another easy one. The United Hawkland fought valiantly but were unable to vanquish Dod Rava and went down 3-2. Throw in the fact that they seemed to be a one-and-done team and Andy was feeling pretty confident that his boys could get another W out of this match. He didn't want to be complacent, though, so he still needed to work on a game plan and he still needed to get plenty of training in for his players. Maybe take a look at that match and see if there was anything he could try and take advantage of, just to minimise the risk of getting humiliated and, perhaps, even getting a shut-out win. But he had a bit of time before he needed to worry about that, so instead he just took out his Switch and just played it for a bit. Mostly to relax but also because there a few slightly more important matters that needed taking care of.

Like trying to get all the gaps in Skate Heaven, something that had been kicking his ass the past week or so.

For Adélard Michaud, the work for gameday starts a lot earlier than puck drop. As the team's equipment manager, he is responsible of every players' gear and preparation for the main event. The first order of business as the equipment gets off the bus is to get them set up into the locker room. Playing the tournament hosts in the opening matchup seemed like a blessing for the Patriotlandians as Dëritee Ärenä, the largest facility used during the tournament, features vast locker rooms, even for the visitors. With all that space, Adélard was able to assign a spot to every player in their preffered spots. Usually, skaters are placed with their linemates but goaltenders need more room that other junior looker room don't have. Once every shoulder pad, helmet and glove were placed in their appropriate location, the final touch was to hang the brand new away uniform for each player. The new white and baby blue threads hint at the senior team design while maintaining the identity of the next generation with the lighter shade.

As players got ready for morning skate, there was plenty of adjustments to be made. Ingrid French's mask needed some attention after a high shot ripped off her neck guard. Meanwhile some players needed some freshly sharpened skates to carve the ice with more finesse. While the game has certainly changed over the years, the advancement in skates has also helped equipment managers who are now able to change skate blades on the fly without needing to change the whole skate.

Finally, before puck drop, it was time to tape the hockey sticks. Every player has their favorite and routine. While some won't let anyone but themselves tape their twigs others want the expert hands of Adélard and his team to get the best results. For him the most satisfying part of the job is when a player scores a goal or makes a play with equipment he maintains. In his own words, "I can't be on the ice. I'm a little too old for that. But when these kids succeed, I rest easy knowing I helped make it happen for them."

As the players made their way back to the changing room following a back and forth victory against reigning champions. The equipment team made sure to pack all the essentials in order to start the process all over again for the next match. With laundry and travelling to the next venue the managers are in for a late night but as long as the team keeps performing, they will get the satisfaction of a job well done.

Drive down Avenue du Champ du Batalle in Champlain this week, and you’ll see banners reading “Bienvenue aux nouveaux médecins”-”Welcome new doctors”-in huge print everywhere. Bing Bong, meanwhile, is chock full of memes about avoiding the hospitals in the last week of June, because that’s when the new residents start. But how did all these doctors come to be?

Medical education in Lacfroid begins in secondary school, when students take an aptitude test and are allowed to choose a specialization track. These specializations range from law enforcement to retail to government, and follow the “rule of fifty”--that is, the goal of a given industry is for fifty percent of its graduates to go into the specialization field, and fifty percent of the field to originate from the specialization track. The health sciences specialization is managed centrally by the Ministry of Education, meaning it is available to students at any secondary school in Lacfroid, and its curriculum includes the most rigorous science and math tracks as well as time devoted to shadowing health professionals in the community.

Upon secondary school graduation, those who choose to continue in the health specialization track apply and rank-order their choices for undergraduate education. The Bachelor of Science in Health is by far the most popular choice of degree program for those seeking to be doctors, but it also contains tracks for nursing and allied health professionals, to include psychologists, pharmacists, physical therapists, and others. At the end of their sophomore year, BSH students take comprehensive exams which, combined with their GPA, allow them to choose their track going forward; namely nursing, medicine, or “allied health”, which includes psychology, pharmacy, physical therapy, and other health professions. Other undergraduate offerings in the medical field include a Bachelor’s of Science in Biotechnology at S&T in Raleigh, which meets the requirements for any of the three health tracks, and a few nursing degrees at other schools which only meet the criteria for the nursing track.

Following the sophomore year, those accepted into the physician track transfer to either Hopkinsville or Universite de Lacfroid to finish their undergraduate degrees and begin formal medical education. Those tracked into other health fields may also transfer based on the location of their graduate training. After two years of classroom instruction, students take their first set of board exams, after which they are permitted to rotate as apprentices in hospitals throughout Lacfroid. It is during this time that students start to consider their medical specialty; residency slots within Lacfroid are limited, and students must design their clinical education around getting the right experience to be competitive.

Approximately one hundred doctors graduate in Lacfroid each year and match into residency. Some may choose to go abroad for residency, many to Quebec and Shingoryeo. There are residency programs in Lacfroid in all primary care specialties, but for more specialized residencies and especially fellowships, most Lacfroidois doctors are trained abroad. Conversely, the biotechnology-focused residencies in Raleigh attract many foreign doctors, although they are obligated by statute to maintain a certain number of Lacfroidois.

When the first period ended the match showed 2-1 to the guests.

Darkmania tied again at the second period at the '5 mark with a quick Käspir Reltor shot. The guest answered again with a goal in '8 and got lucky with an accidental Danÿel Releÿ own goal in '13. Releÿ redeemed himself with a goal just seconds before the end of the second period. 4-3 to the guests.

The final period started with two quick goals from Patriotlandia at '4 and '6. The guests defended their side and it took 13 minutes before Darkmania could score. But in the end, Patiorlandia won over Darkmania 6-4.
