OOC Details and RP Information

Please use an RP permissions box in your roster. One is provided below.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Godmod scoring events: Yes/No
RP injuries to my players: Yes/No
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes/No
Hand out penalties to my players: Yes/No
Eject my players: Yes/No
Godmod other events: Yes/No

Feel free to add other permissions, and provide clarifications. Please do not disallow opponents from choosing your goalscorers, though (at the very least tell them to get in touch with you). Please also indicate a style modifier, between -5 (defensive) and +5 (aggressive) clearly in your roster. If I cannot find one within a roster and receive no response to any clarifications I may send, I will presume you are using a -5 0 modifier.

In addition, please do not damage anything within my nation, nor enter any diseases. As much as I am fascinated by the concept of disease IRL, I’m not sure my people are quite as fond.

Overview

Sylestone is a tropical island nation located in the far west of Esportiva, southwest of Cyborg Holland and north of the S.U.S Islands and Quebecois Acadiana. The nation itself is home to roughly 30 million residents, made up of humans, the famed Sentient Objects of Kirkham, and even wild elves and sentient animals. The nation is one of the prime tourist destinations in the entirety of Esportiva, with a huge variety of attractions, including world-class beaches, rainforests, reefs, and even deserts. You can not forget Felton Island, located a couple of hours by ferry off the coast of Chamberley, where everywhere you look, there is something amazing to be seen in the island’s dense rainforest. Sylestone is also well-known for its efficient public transport system, with interconnecting railroad tracks and metro systems in all major cities, making the train the most predominant way of getting around for the majority of the population. Cars may not be banned at all, but they are rarely used and when they are, they are fuelled by electric power. The economy is led by the tourism industry, as alluded to above, although the dairy industry is also significant in size, alongside others. Everything in the nation is run by renewable power, with massive solar and wind farms located in the grasslands in the far east and west of the island.

The humans of Sylestone are typically friendly, but are always looking for a way to pull a secret little prank on you. Many are unafraid and rush headlong into things, but most have a cautious side to them, too, although nigh on everyone is determined. For Sentient Objects, they may be slightly more reserved, but once you get to know them, they are certainly a joy to be around. The legal drinking age in Sylestone is 21.

Sylestone’s official classification may be a “Stone”, but in reality, that pretitle is basically synonymous with “Republic”. The nation’s president is a literal refrigerator and is a member of the Toilet Party, the party in power for the past fifteen years straight. The Toilet Party is famous for its pacifism and strict environmental laws, resulting in the nation being crowned as one of the most naturally beautiful.

The national animal of Sylestone is the Margaret; a human-like, hooded creature that is found sparingly across all parts of the island. Many sports players like to pray to the animal before they take the field, a superstition of which is universally renowned to give you good luck. Whether this is true or not remains questionable, but it certainly seems to somehow work, along with burning an amount of the national currency, the Rubber Chicken. This is another superstition many elite Sylestonean athletes insist on carrying out, and the amount of money burned depends on how vital the win must be. Fortunately, no one has gone broke just yet by doing this, but it’s only a matter of time.

Sylestone is roughly 700,000 km square and generally takes about 15-20 hours to travel by car from Garretty in the northwest to Kirkham in the southeast. However, it will only take two if travelling by aeroplane (highly unrecommended for environmental reasons) and ten if catching a train. A physical map of Sylestone can be found below and we hope you enjoy your stay in paradise.

Dangers

Sylestone may be beautiful, but like many tropical countries, it is not without its dangers. The nation is full of snakes, spiders, jellyfish, big cats and many other deadly predators. Also watch the Mwimbi Bimbi fruit that will kill if touched, let alone swallowed. It looks like an ordinary plum but with thorns on the stem. Remember to watch out for elves in the Melville Rainforest surrounding Emacuton and Chamberley, they will kill anyone who seems to cause disunity. And whatever you do, do not offend the sentient objects of Kirkham…

Q&A about the Sentient Objects of Kirkham

Q: How do the ovens cook their food?
A: Easy. All they need to do is get someone or something to put the food inside them (many have mechanical arms, etc.), and then they themselves can choose how to cook that food.

Q: Do the refrigerators own refrigerators themselves?
A: No. Duh.

Q: How do they reproduce?
A: Hmm, good question. In order for reproduction to occur, you need two Toilets, or two Fridges, or two whatever. Those two Objects then do stuff (which varies depending on the type), and the result is another Sentient Object!

Q: Do toilets need the toilet like humans do?
A: No. They’re toilets for a reason.

Q: Can a human own a Sentient Object or vice versa?
A: Do NOT even think about it. Sentient Objects and humans live on equal footing in Sylestone, and it is a huge crime to own one of the opposite… culture.

Q: How do Sentient Objects feel about non-sentient objects?
A: They laugh at them because they’re lesser beings. Well, not even beings at all, really.

Q: What happens if there is a power outage?
A: All Sentient Objects run on their own electricity (if they need it), so nothing.

Q: If you unplug an appliance and then plug it back in, is it a persistent conscious state?
A: See above answer.

Q: Is it torture to keep a broken Sentient Object operational?
A: When a Sentient Object breaks, it sometimes dies. Fortunately, this happens very rarely and when it does, the treatment is usually very quick.

Q: Is there intra-sentient racism?
A: No. All Sentient Objects live on equal footing.

Q: How do they see?
A: They have big googly eyes that help them see.

Q: What happens if you slowly exchange parts between Sentient Objects until they’re completely switched?
A: This cannot happen, it is physically impossible.

Q: Are there organs?
A: Yes. Sentient Objects have a brain-like organ somewhere in their body, which makes them sentient.

Q: Do Sentient Objects have brains?
A: Yes, see above.

Q: If a Sentient Object dies, do organ transplants occur?
A: Only if a Sentient Object of the same type requires a new brain-like organ.

Q: Do Sentient Objects feel pain?
A: Yes, although only in extreme circumstances.

Q: Does Sentient Object crime occur often?
A: Exceeding rarely, but it is not unheard of.

Q: What classic literature do Sentient Objects prefer? Do they admire the Mona Lisa or the Apple Lisa?
A: Er, depends on the Sentient Object, I guess.

Q: How do Sentient Objects walk around?
A: Depends. Many bounce around, but those that are lucky enough to have legs use them.

Q: How were the Sentient Objects created?
A: Ah, good question. So basically, no one knows. At one point in history following the colonisation of Sylestone, a big band of Sentient Objects decided to combine together for whatever reason and cast a “forgetfulness” spell on everyone in the nation, including themselves. It means that Sylestonean history is rich and thick going back 500 years, but no longer, as no one remembers what happened before then. This event is known as the Big Forget.

Q: How do strip clubs work in Kirkham?
A: Not even going to bother answering this, with respect to the inner Quebecois in all of us.

Grounds

Chamberley Institute of Sport, Chamberley
Capacity: 109,300
Location: Inner East Chamberley
Domestic Home Ground: Chamberley City
About: With a capacity of over 100,000, the Chamberley Institute of Sport is the largest ground in Sylestone in the largest city. Chamberley is surrounded by the Meville Rainforest, where there is an endless supply of beauty and some nice trails. Off the coast are reefs, some of which you can take a day trip to and of course the amazing Felton Island, where players and fans can meet the wonders of the tropics face-to-face. It is well worth a visit.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group A, matchdays 1-3

Avondale International Sports Stadium, Avondale
Capacity: 99,000
Location: Avondale City
Domestic Home Ground: Capitol Athletic
About: Located in the nation’s capital, the AISS is the third-most prestigious football stadium in Sylestone, after Sentient Oval in Kirkham and the Chamberley Institute of Sport. The ground is home to Capital Athletic, four-time Toilet League champions, with that simple fact making the ground prestigious in itself. Avondale is a wonderful city, with an amazing zoo and some beautiful beaches. Being the capital, it is rich in history so the museums in the city centre may appeal, too. Maybe even the parliament house, which is more interesting than the “norm.” Enjoy your stay!
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group D, matchdays 1-3

The Bay Reserve, Betham
Capacity: 68,420
Location: Inner South Betham
Domestic Home Ground: Betham FC
About: Despite being Sylestone’s third-largest city after Chamberley and Avondale, the Bay Reserve is not quite as large as some other stadiums across the nation, and easily houses the local supporters due to Betham’s less prestigious sporting history. The stadium has a beautiful view out over Betham Bay, where the water is a pristine turquoise blue, enticing each and every individual for a cool swim. The city itself is located at the edge of a large tropical rainforest and is situated on the Charon River, running down from the Cable Alps in eastern Sylestone. It is only a few hours’ drive from Kirkham, too.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group E, matchdays 1-3

Sentient Oval, Kirkham
Capacity: 29,275 toilet seats
Location: Kirkham City
Domestic Home Ground: Kirkham Appliances, Kirkham Sentients, Fridge FC, Breakfast Bowl FC, Kitchen Sink FC
About: Kirkham, situated on the southeast corner of the island nation, is universally renowned for its Sentient Objects that inhabit the city. Its 60,000 residents are all classified as Sentient Objects, and the city is guarded by a big, Sentient tower, that watches over anyone who enters. However, travelling here brings you no worries, as the inhabitants are generally very welcoming to foreigners. The stadium itself is new and was only made when Sylestone entered the 72nd edition of the Baptism of Fire. Its most recent update is to change the chairs to toilet seats, back before the 78th Cup of Harmony.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group C, matchdays 1-3

The Trees, Pesfield
Capacity: 62,000
Location: East Pesfield
Domestic Home Ground: Pesfield Trees
About: Located in the treetop city of Pesfield, The Trees is a rare feature located on the ground. Surrounded by trees that are home to over a million people, it is an out-of-this-world city, with people bustling past each other on highways in the sky, with homes built onto the tree branches - a child’s dream come true. With trees even splattered at random intervals inside the stadium itself, it’s one of those places that you have to see with your own eyes to truly believe it.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group B, matchdays 1-3

Carson Stadium, Cleorough
Capacity: 80,000
Location: Inner East Cleorough
Domestic Home Ground: Cleorough
About: Sylestone’s newest stadium, the Carson Stadium was built as a replacement of the 30,000 seater that was the old Carson Stadium. It was constructed for the 78th Cup of Harmony and has been in use ever since. The city itself is surprisingly unknown to the wider world, but is home to some of Sylestone’s most beautiful reefs, making for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. Outside of that, though, there ultimately isn’t much, and is more known for industry such as solar and wind farms quite literally wherever you go. The city is the fourth-largest in Sylestone, home to a little under three million people, only behind Avondale, Chamberley and Betham.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group F, matchdays 1-3

Sunlife Stadium, Halpenley
Capacity: 52,000
Location: South Halpenley
Domestic Home Ground: Halpenley United
About: Located in the middle of the Sylestonean desert, Halpenley is extremely hot during the day and usually extremely cold at night. There is almost no in-between and travelling fans and players will find a lot of discomfort out of this. Halpenley is located on a river and an oasis, which was the source of water in ages gone by. The city is home to 1.5 million inhabitants, living in the extremes. It will be tough for those playing there and remember your sunscreen!
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group D, matchdays 4-5

Ground of Dunkirk, Dunkirk
Capacity: 43,000
Location: West Dunkirk
Domestic Home Ground: Dunkirk Athletic
About: Dunkirk, located halfway between Avondale and Chamberley, is on the edge of the Melville Rainforest but is home to the main platform of the agriculture industry. The surrounding grasslands are home to lots and lots of brown and black tiger snakes, which you must be wary of when exploring. The ground itself has been upgraded once, adding 10,000 new seats before Sylestone’s previous Cup of Harmony six years ago. The city is home to roughly 750,000 people, making it the seventh largest in the nation, behind Avondale, Chamberley, Betham, Cleorough, Halpenley and Pesfield.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group F, matchdays 4-5

Fiery Stadium, Dodle
Capacity: 37,500
Location: Dodle City
Domestic Home Ground: Dodle
About: Despite the recent shortcomings of Dodle in the Poo League - Sylestone’s second division - Dodle’s football fans are just as fanatic as any other. Any mention of the club’s inability to breach the top two or three in the division and qualify for the Toilet League will be greeted with hostility but aside from that, the locals are generally lovely people. Dodle itself is located on the eastern edge of the Cable Alps and is situated on the shores of Lake Acondo, a beautiful swimming lake for the 350,000 inhabitants of the city. Even better - due to volcanic activity within the lake, it can sometimes be warm enough to be classified as a spa, but don’t go in too far, or you’ll be burnt alive.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group C, matchdays 4-5

Marbury Stadium
Capacity: 31,000
Location: Central Marbury
Domestic Home Ground: Marbury FC
About: Located on the southeastern coast of Sylestone with a population of 300,000, this Campionato Esportiva will mark Marbury history - for the first time ever, their population will be able to witness football matches without having to deal with the drive to Kirkham. It marks the continuation of a superb year for local football fans, with Marbury FC earning their promotion to the Toilet League for the first time and completing a host of new signings that looks set to keep them there. With a superb atmosphere in domestic games, officials will be hoping for something similar, and is why Group A - containing Sylestone - has been assigned here. Over the years, regular cyclones have destroyed parts of the stadium and surrounding city, so for it to be in one functional piece for the tournament is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group A, matchdays 4-5

Kitchener Stadium, Avondale
Capacity: 65,000
Location: Inner West Avondale
Domestic Home Ground: Avondale City
About: The second-most prestigious football stadium in Avondale, behind the Avondale International Sports Stadium, Kitchener Stadium is a nice, large ground located right on the Malburd River, running through the city. It can seat up to 65,000 people, making it one of the larger stadiums in the nation, but due to the presence of the AISS, has never hosted an international football match. The sea breeze rushing in may not be optimal for some players, but the scent is definitely there despite being a fair few kilometres from the ocean.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group E, matchdays 4-5

Walgabba Dome, Kirton
Capacity: 39,000
Location: Kirton City
Domestic Home Ground: Mid-Capital
About: Named after the indigenous Sylestonean name for the area, Walgabba Dome is located in the heart of Kirton (not to be confused with Kirkham), the city that lies between Cleorough and Avondale in the Capital State. The city is home to roughly 500,000 residents and is home to some of the best beaches and reefs in all of Sylestone, if not Esportiva. With the city being located on the coastline, it is only a few minutes by train to the beaches, where spectators can enjoy the equatorial sunshine while wallowing in the turquoise water, as well as participate in games such as beach cricket or even beach football.
Allocated Group Stage Games:
Group B, matchdays 4-5

Фудбалска репрезентација на Јосифово - Фудбалска репрезентација Јосифова

Intro to Josifovo:

Josifovo(Pronunciation: Yo-see-fo-vo) is a small nation situated in a large landmass called Slovj somewhere really far away, yet closest to Esportiva. It is bordered by the nations of Juzun to its north, Kombetara to its west and Kicuvo to the east while to the south it has access to the Beskrajno Sea. 3 million people have been pitied to call this country their home, despite its enjoyable mediterranean climate to the south slowly changing to a colder and more prone to seasonal swings continental climate further north, suitable for human habitation.

As previously stated, 3 million people have been pitied to call this advancing hellscape their home, as it has been the crossroads of various bigger and stronger empires throught history, which saw the Josifski population constantly subjugated under a bigger nation whether through influence or throught occupation. This has resulted in a multiethnic and multireligious entity which has constant ethnic strife trying to balance the populations within the nation. The majority nonetheless are the Orthodox Josifski consisting of 70% of the population, followed by large minorities of Orthodox Kicuvski, Catholic Kombetare and Muslim Juzunski in the borderline regions. The official language is Josifski, though not a proper language in its own right, it is a dialectal continuum mostly resembling the languages of Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and various Torlakian dialects. There are two accepted varieties of Josifski used in education nation-wide, the Samuilovo Dialect, resembling Macedonian and the Bijelica Dialect, more so resembling the Shtokavian Variety of Serbo-Croatian.

Today the nation is rapidly developing following the devastating ethnically-based South Slovj war of the 90's which saw Josifovo side up with Kicuvo against the nations of Kombetara and Juzun. The war resulted in the complete destruction of many cities and villages in all countries while it completely reshaped the ethnic makeup of an even more murky and multiethnic general area. Josifovo is currently undergoing massive industrial advancement especially in the oil and automotive industries, while it is also letting go of its accursed socialist past.

The capital of Josifovo is Bijelica, a coastal gem of rare beauty, while its largest city is the older capital, expertly-designed Samuilovo. Those two are the only major cities of the nation. The urban landscape is led by brutalist architecture in pretty much every major city and town, while there are semblances of the older and more ethnic, cultural architecture in the smaller towns and villages. Most major cities and towns are also filled with several industrial warehouses and factories, remnants of the socialist regime that are still being used to this day, although they are getting modernised.

Culturally, because the nation is a big melting pot, you can find an assortment of very differing artforms, cuisines and even customs depending on where in the country you are. The Josifski-majority regions are well-known for their orthodox artstyle and beautiful churches, renown all over Slovj. The Kicuvski-majority regions are well-known for their culinary traditions, with many foods that are staple all over the region, although there's disputes between every country on whether those foods are Kicuvski, Josifski, Kombetare, Juzunski or from elsewhere. Meanwhile the Kombetare are known for their hospitality and their roughness. While lastly, the Juzunski are known for the Islamic architecture and mathematical aptitude which has led to great engineering feats wherever they happen to be the majority. Despite the internal strife between those populations, harmony and unity can sometimes be reached and in more recent day that is exactly what has been happening all over the nation in its struggle for peace and prosperity in an ever-growing world.

Football in Josifovo:

Football's entry into Josifovo came in the mid-1900's by a population of people from the very far reaches of the multiverse, potentially beyond Esportiva itself. They were speaking in a language intelligible to Bijelica dialect and thus the sport was spread from there.

Football was initially popular among workers in the royal docks of Bijelica and other factory workers. Eventually the sport came to be a coping mechanism for the players during the harsh socialist regime that followed the monarchy but was also used as a means to "educate" the locals about values regarding national identity as well as socialist values that were BLATANTLY pro-regime. Following the Great South Slovj war of the 1990's and the country's entry into a democracy, football has solidified its place as the most popular sport in the country, with thousands of viewers in every single league game.

Professional football only became a thing around the 1950's, as such due to the country's relative isolationism beyond its direct neighbors in Slovj, football has not managed to grow and become as organised as other places in the multiverse. However there's a lot of fans either politically-inclined or ethnically-inclined to follow their favorite teams. This results in violence on the pitches and outside. In multiple places around the country there's fan graffiti and murals in different areas that show their love and support for their teams and usually mark up the areas of cities and towns by team as well as a border registration would.

As for the football itself, Josifski footballers are not exactly known for their talent but more so for their strength and their ability to follow out the commands of the coach. As such, being a smart coach with strong strategies and correct utilisation of the players has always been the way to go. Smartness usually translated to...

Tactics:

As stated previously, Josifski players are not talented whatsoever. Using their strength and superior height, they tend to win aerial duels and as such crosses are a form of play commonly seen in Josifovo.

The most common lineup is a 4-4-2, with 2 rocking and impossible defenders on the heart of the defence and two side defenders which usually are slightly "faster" than strong. In the midfield, usually there's a central midfielder that supplies to the sides and a central attacking midfielder that supplies crosses and through-balls on the attack, while the side midfielders try to carry the ball forward and then cross it to the two strikers up front. Midfielders are usually the more "unimposing" players but also tend to be the ones most talented with the ball on their feet, so Josifski midfielders tend to be technical. Up front, the two strikers usually form a partnership based on strength and clinical finishing. One tends to be a poacher, while the other tends to be more of a supply finisher than anything. If they get their chances, they have to do the job.

To be clear and so that it doesn't get missed out THE STYLE MODIFIER IS +1.

The Team:

The team itself was constructed in a way so that all people groups in Josifovo get an "equal" chance to represent the country. Or at least that was what the ФФЈ(FFJ) said, but due to COMPLICATIONS could not be finalised to the fullest extend? Crazy, right?

Naming conventions are complicated at first, Josifski names are usually ones resembling ethnic Macedonian or Serbian names, Kicuvski names are stricly Serbian names, Juzunski names follow Bosnian naming conventions while Kombetare names resemble Albanian names. Without further ado.

The ФФЈ(FFJ) had a deep pool of available coaches to choose from, however ethnic tensions within the board have "forced it" to come to a peaceful "consensus" that there will be 4 coaches, one from each of the major people groups with a first among equals the coach of Josifski descent.

BET Njaza Territorial Team

The Banijan Esportivan Territories of Njaza are newly organized territories of Njaza- located just north of Damukuni and northwest of the Tumbran Northlands in Esportiva. The Territories have very recently become an annexed territory of Banija, retaining semi-autonomy, although the real reason the Banijans are here are due to the abundant oil resources of this land.

Players born/raised in the BET have what is called 'dual-eligibility'. BET Njaza find themselves ineligible for WCC competition as they do not have an independent FA- the RBSA serves as the governing body for the sport in these territories, just like they do in mainland Banija. Players born/raised in the BET are not eligible to play for Banija in AO regional competitions(such as the AOCAFs), and can only play for BET Njaza in Esportivan regional competitions. Simultaneously, if there is the rare circumstance where BET Njaza and Banija enter the same tournament(i.e. if BET Njaza qualified for the Eagle's Cup via the CE), these players would not be eligible to play for Banija- they must play for BET Njaza(or not play at all).

However, because BET Njaza are ineligible for WCC competition, players from this territory are eligible to play for Banija in WCC and other non-regional competitions that BET Njaza does not enter into(such as youth World Cups or the Tea Cup, as an example).

21 f Lana Nuzah 25 STR Al-Shabab
22 f Sima Sujaa 24 STR Al-Ettifaq

Feel free to pick a starting XI and formation. When in doubt, you may run with a 4-3-3 1-11. We expect a lot from Kayan Faj'an and Soha Alqamar, the former being the centrepiece to our best club of recent years, Al-Ettifaq, and the latter being a true veteran keeping Al-Amid afloat. Plans are for the team to play pretty narrow - Irithoren doesn't have a lot of flat, grassy areas, so our league plays on fields that are as small as the laws about field dimensions allow - and adventurous and a little individualistic.

We play in dark green with a light trim. Our away jersey is the reverse: the light colour for most of the kit but with a dark green trim, numbers, etcetera.

What is Irithoren?
We're a tiny country on a rocky outcropping/cape with a tad over 150 000 people.

Most of us live in a long, stretched out town along the coast, which also functions as our capital, named Dhidiyah. Think narrow paved streets, warm summer afternoons/evenings, pot plant gardens along stucco and stone houses, lots of yellowish tones, and plenty of cats that must be someone's but they're just vibing on the warm stones (OOC: lofi girl aesthetics).

Geographically, the inland is used for growing mediterranean crops like olives (and some coffee and tea) on small-scale farms. The town of Tabuhsa - just outside Dhidiyah - works as a local marketplace for most of our agricultural goods.

We're laid-back, but with a competitive edge, much like 'parent nation' Ko-oren. Irithoren has taken the meritocratic elements but we kept our own 'village head'-system, so local issues are sorted on a very small scale under the 'most apt' (and usually quite old) village head. National issues are solved by a surprisingly modern (but tiny) cabinet under a prime minister (Zeina Nayla Fizairdah).

Our other towns include Qawit, smack dab in the middle of the country with a small industrial sector, and Zairdah, on the border to the mainland. Around Dhidiyah we don't just find Tabuhsa, but also Hurasan, which is a separate coastal town that just barely doesn't touch the capital.

We aligned ourselves with Ko-oren a while ago, but we recently intensified those ties, fearing interference by larger Esportivan nations (read: Tumbra invading the northlands).

What is the Al-Dawri Al-Irithoreni Likurat Al-Qadam (the Irithoren Football League)?
An amateur league that includes all ten clubs in Irithoren. Four from the capital of Dhidiyah, one each from nearby Hurasan and Tabuhsa, and then three from industrial centre Qawit, and one from border town Zairdah.

THE TUMBRAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
The Black Eagles

Image

The Tumbran National Football Team is Tumbra's main representative in all association football competitions for national associations. Making its debut at the 87th World Cup Qualifiers, the team currently ranks 8th in the world. The team is controlled by the Tumbran Football Federation, which is also the governing body of football in Tumbra. Also known as the Black Eagles, or affectionately the Eagles, the team competes in the World Cup and its related competitions. The team also participates in the Campionato Esportiva, also sends teams to the Di Bradini Cup for Under-21s, and the Under-18 World Cup. The team have won the 51st edition of the former tournament and the 13th edition of the latter tournament; which has led to a keen emphasis on bleeding youth into the national team set-up early. With a loyal travelling contingent of supporters known as the Black Army, the Tumbran national team's support will be on display throughout this tournament, with lots of tifos and loud cheers expected throughout matches.

Players

Interim manager Peter Gabriel has brought the core of the national team to the Campionato, with nearly every player with at least a hundred caps on the plane to Sylestone. It will be, for the Black Eagles, a way to pick up the pieces; but at least the core of the squad is still here. Nick Barker, safe pair of hands, acrobatic and shot-stopper, dons the gloves once more; though there are complaints that he's beginning to hold up succession, there are rumours he'll only quit once he hits the century club. Or fifty clean sheets. Whichever comes first.

Annie Renton starts at left back, explosive and attacking despite her small stature; she's gained a reputation as something of a motormouth, too, throughout her time in the national team. The established partnership of Stephen Kerr and Ian Ashburn starts at the back; the two know how each other play and play well off each other now. Kerr typically takes on the role of the tackling centre-back, while Ian is the distributor; but both are so far at the top of their game that their roles are essentially interchangeable. James Green and Tracey Mercurio provide two different styles at right back; James is the more offensively suited option, while Tracey prefers to ply her trade as an inverted wing-back, marauding into midfield to provide an extra option there.

In midfield, it's Tumbra's golden trio once more. Trudy Harrison, the best defensive midfielder in the world, best deployed as a destroyer that harrasses opposing players. Vincent Hicks, pace-setter and midfield maestro. Phil Cole, so known for his offensive exploits in the space just outside the box that the area's been nicknamed Phil's office in both Lakewood and Marcadia.

On the wings, Valerie Wells holds court; she's probably best known for her signature move of cutting in on her right foot and scoring on her left. It's simple, it's been criticised as one-dimensional, but somehow right-backs in Nephara are still bamboozled every time she does it. Lynne Crossley is more an out-and-out winger, but is versatile almost anywhere; though her club's recent performances have seen her begin to agitate for a move; but nobody bit after Strathcona set a nation's ransom of sixty-five million dollars for her. For context; add fifteen million and you could buy your very own elf.

Up front, Nick Riordan is still Tumbra's best striker; tall, blond, deceptively fast, arrogant, and blessed with a right foot that could actually kill if he gets the shot off, he's gunning for Robin Vaughn's record in goals scored. He should hit it; after all, he's only four off.

Tactical Set-Up

Tumbra typically sets up in a 4-2-3-1, though may change to a 3-5-2 depending on the circumstance.

Most likely to...
Left Corner Taker Valerie Wells/Vincent Hicks/Jack Reed/Ian Robertson
Right Corner Taker Lynne Crossley/Vincent Hicks/Phil Cole/James Green
Penalties Nick Riordan/Robin Vaughn/Charlotte Henshaw/Vincent Hicks
Direct FK Taker Phil Cole/Natalie Coleman/Jack Reed
Indirect FK Taker Phil Cole/Jack Reed/Lucas McCormick
Most likely to foul/be booked Stephen Kerr/Trudy Harrison/Ian Ashburn/Lucas McCormick
Most likely to shoot Nick Riordan/Charlotte Henshaw/Lynne Crossley/Heidi Canavan
Most likely to score from close-range Nick Riordan/Charlotte Henshaw/Natalie Coleman/Lynne Crossley
Most likely to score from long-range Charlotte Henshaw/Phil Cole/Vincent Hicks/Nick Riordan
Most likely to be fouled Lynne Crossley/Valerie Wells/Nick Riordan/Charlotte Henshaw
Most likely to attempt the spectacular Nick Riordan/Natalie Coleman

Al-Dawri Al-Irithoreni Likurat Al-Qadam - The Irithoreni Football League

The long-running ten-team competition unites Irithoreni at the end of long, hot, sunny days. There is a long summer break to spare the players, but otherwise they're in for twenty-eight late kickoffs.

The capital of Dhidiyah is home to 40% of the league.

Al-Ettifaq (Dhidiyah) are the big club. Operating from 'downtown' (or what passes for that in tiny Irithoren), they might not be the oldest team in the country (or even the city), but they're still plenty old with a trophy case to show for it. The oldest club, instead, is...

Al-Amid (Dhidiyah) are the oldest club in town. Never really outgrowing the harbour and the small living quarters nearby, the club and the fans remain a proud bunch. During the infancy of the league, this is where a lot of talent came from, but the club that can now boast to be the best youth department is...

Al-Shabab (Dhidiyah), or 'Youth', are a much more recent addition - in fact, they're the most recently founded club. With the country being this small, there was no room for a second tier and so they were lifted straight into the top division, where they were shaky for a while but now hold their own quite well.

El-Akhthar (Dhidiyah) are the outsiders of the capital. Realising nobody in town played in green yet despite it being a national colour, they quickly co-opted it, and they haven't let it down. Right now, they present themselves as the 'national' club, which is (seen as) a little arrogant.

Rivalries in the capital, from biggest to smallest, are:
Al-Ettifaq (Dhidiyah) -Al-Amid (Dhidiyah): the Classic. The two old clubs facing off. Always a treat to watch, and Irithoreni do so in droves, taking to roofs of nearby apartment blocks to catch the action. This match is the one with the tradition where those watching from rooftops light flares if a goal is scored: red for Al-Ettifaq, black for Al-Amid.

Al-Ettifaq (Dhidiyah) - El-Akhthar (Dhidiyah): the Derby. With El-Akhthar punching above its weight, the United (that's Al-Ettifaq) see them as their biggest rivals within city limits.

Al-Amid (Dhidiyah) - El-Akhthar (Dhidiyah): Old versus Rich. Working class and ancient Al-Amid take on new money El-Akhthar.

Other towns in greater Dhidiyah have two clubs:

Al-Burtuqali (Tabuhsa) was founded after the country embraced its region, hence playing in all orange. Somewhat modern and well-connected as a club, but the town itself has a much more agricultural and mundane image.

Al-Safra (Hurasan) are the second oldest club in the country, after Al-Amid. The Yellows long played only occasional friendlies and established themselves as a force, but not one that was able to join the league for a while, following mostly petty, personal reasons. The chairman of Al-Safra just didn't gel with the 'executives' in Dhidiyah. Executives is a bit of an overstatement given how the Irithoren Football Association operates from a three-room rented office.

From further out, the remaining four clubs are from Qawit (a centre of industry) and Zairdah (on the border).

Al-Faiha (Qawit) are a traveling team that is connected with the larger hinterland of Irithoren better than any club. While the clubs in Dhidiyah boast the biggest following, Al-Faiha can claim to represent the most land area - several farmers and a lot of farm animals. They now play in Qawit but still hardly feel as part of the fabric of the city despite having their home there for decades now.

Al-Nusur (Qawit), the Eagles, a real Qawiti club, the club of the townsfolk, the tradespeople, and the industries. They are at constant odds with...

Al-Soqur (Qawit), the Falcons, a real Qawiti club, the club of the townsfolk, the tradespeople, and the industries.

Lastly, there's...

Al-Hudud (Zairdah), the club of the police and what counts as an army.

Rivalries in the rest of the country, from biggest to smallest, are:

Al-Nusur (Qawit) - Al-Soqur (Qawit): the Qawiti. The big derby of two clubs that were propelled into greatness about half a century ago when Qawit took off as an industrial capital. The city's died down a tad since, but the rivalry lives on and then some.

Al-Hudud (Zairdah) - Al-Faiha (Qawit): the National. The game between the government - those in power and those with power - versus the little folk living way out there. A bit of a David and Goliath (or rather, Goliath and David, respectively) situation.

Story

Cap Nord only starts their third World Cup cycle but kicks off this Campionato Esportiva with their third manager already. The Whalers might still be new faces on the international scene but have gone through their first teething pains already. They emerged under Forseth with whom they, despite taking their first steps, won a BoF bronze medal and got an impressive 61.6% point percentage. The few losses came more often than not against sides featuring in the World Cup. As such, results could not be used as the excuse to give the charismatic and outspoken Forseth the boot but ‘differences concerning the way forward’ were used to part ways. A few days later, in silence, Robert McEather was installed as the new manager of the national team.

A surprise as his history only features a few stints in the lower leagues. But, possibly more importantly, he has an NUP member card. Needless to say that the takeover of the latter party and the installation of a puppet kingdom had its impact on the foundations of society. The newcomer was shunned by the fans for his lack of knowledge and struggled to handle the stars in his selection, not in the least youngsters Simon Carstensen and Jorgen Bjerkness. After a full cycle, an exhausted McEather threw the towel. The load of the position had been too much to carry, the narrative reads, but he signed off with a 68.1% scorecard, a stunning Campionato silver and coming within goal difference of a WC play-off, so history might be kinder on Robert McEather.

The length of the decision making by the FA for a successor led to speculation: all major names of the league made an appearance in the press but most pointed to Van Nooten, a composed and sympathetic fellow without a lot of first-team experience but with a good connection with the squad, having been the assistant under Forseth and McEather. But Van Nooten remained in that role as the FA landed on 54-year old Lozhoan Pazron Finchley. A surprise to the Capnordic fans, but the former center-back earned his stripes with Langhan Town, Lozho U21 and Protchen United. Despite winning prizes as player and coach with the latter, Finchley was disposed unceremoniously: his move abroad was inspired by a hunger to prove them wrong.

As the results are already on the right track, it suits that Finchley starts from a similar game plan as his predecessors: 4-3-3. But contrary to those before him, there will be a high pressing, giving whole new tasks to the offensive players and even more importance to the energetic wingbacks. And whatever the game plan, it goes without saying that targetman and goalgetter Myrrheim plays a crucial role. A known issue for Cap Nord is the depth of the squad, but Finchley’s U21 experience should stimulate him to give chances to a new wave of players and get more rotation in the squad (even if the expectation is that this will mainly be after this Campionato). The Cup of Harmony, in which the football was hopeful if not for the final game collapse against Aleirave, showed that Finchley has a plan and the dressing room on his side.

Selection

.1 Johannes Marzinn Cleorough [SYL] 25 (23 caps)
12 Siel Leuwert Draiewikum Boys 33 (50 caps)
13 Thom McEnroy Fallwich United 24 ( 0 caps)

The days of Siel Leuwert as starting goalie are counted after two howlers in the last WC qualifiers, lifting Johannes Marzinn in the number one shirt. Only 24 but well talented, the lanky, modern goalkeeper proved his worth in the title-winning season of Sielhafen and confirmed this potential by keeping Cleorough afloat in the Toilet League. Not the most eloquent and he needs to grow in leadership, but his Cup of Harmony game against Valentine Z showed that ‘Clutch’ Marzinn is the right man for the job. This puts Leuwert on the bench, a modest and fine shotstopper with excellent reflexes but mediocre feet. His proverbial goalkeeper craziness limits itself to an unusual interest in pottery and ceramics. In Draiewikum, he’s a legend but he seems a bit past his peak. This opens up opportunities for Thom McEnroy. The youngster lived up to the expectations at Fallwich and possesses a good balance between his skills on the line and footballing intuition.

.2 Troels Poulsen Lydholm Forened 27 (41 caps/ 3 goals)
3 Patrick van Hilvaren Sporting Noordende 35 (73 caps/ 2 goals)
4 Luuk Vennema Columbia City [TMB] 26 (48 caps/ 1 goal )
5 Erik Brymsaeter Sporting Noordende 31 (72 caps/ 6 goals)
14 Jonathan Peary Sielhafen 1.FC 29 (47 caps)
15 Pat O’Sullivan Crester Wanderers 25 ( 3 caps)
24 Siebe Moersleutel Griffin Isles Utd. [PTR] 21 ( 1 cap )

Changes were made last cycle and damn, those paid off. After a mild hesitation in the start, the talented duo in the back were the quiet engine into a Campionato medal performance. No wonder that Finchley has little need or desire to shake up things. Captain van Hilvaren looks classy and is at face value an elegant central defender from the Sporting academy. That means: impeccably dressed, precise passing, lots of cunning and a bit of complaining with the referee. But if needed, he can be a cunt and as his speed wanes, his trickery grows. To his side, there is rising star Luuk Vennema who made (a few years later than expected) his big breakthrough. It clinched him a transfer to the Tumbran Premier Division, where he continues to improve. He is a commanding player who can run his defensive line, a true understudy to his big example van Hilvaren. It is hard to look past these two but for Jonathan Peary, a return to the line-up remains possible as he is valued by all his teammates. A blatant skinhead and a bit of a journeyman, but what you see is what you get: ‘Johno’ can and will murder his direct opponent.

The wings, so crucial in this system, remain a cause of worry as the lack of depth is a major issue, but the starters are valued. Left wing, ‘Pencil’ Brymsaeter (after his feet, build, mustache and prose) remains a great source for attacking intentions. The Sporting player looks more like a violinist than a football player. Nonetheless, he is without remorse and can pick up a goal here or there. His artistic vibe causes some question marks among the staunchly right-wing government but the lack of alternatives keeps him on board. Opposite man Troels Poulsen, on the other hand, actively contributed to the ‘popular uprising/military coup’ (pending on whose word you take for it). But Poulsen is not just a political pawn and possesses style and energy. As he can take a card, finding back-up for him was necessary but difficult. Out of options domestically for wingbacks, it was even inquired whether Brenecian Athame Caulker already qualified for a passport. In the end, the choice fell on O’Sullivan. Crester’s Pat is fast and has a good cross, but remains fluky in positioning. On the left, young talent Moersleutel is added to the group: his move to Patriotlandia should be a next step on an interesting trajectory.

.6 Carl Worbe Sielhafen 1.FC 30 (69 caps/ 2 goals)
8 Theodore Bissett Sielhafen 1.FC 27 (40 caps/ 2 goals)
10 Simon Carstensen Sandfjell Fotball 22 (39 caps/10 goals)
16 Kenneth Breuker Fallwich United 31 (23 caps)
17 Trevor Barrington Sporting Noordeinde 27 (16 caps/ 1 goal )
18 Jody Barnes Cleorough [SYL] 22 ( 2 caps)
20 Hella Veensma Pesfield Trees [SYL] 25 (25 caps/ 3 goals)
25 Maximilian Dahl FF Stennköping 21 ( 0 caps)

If the Campionato and the qualifying campaign made one thing clear, it is that the abundance of talent between Simon Carstensen and Jorgen Bjerkness has the potential to pop, but only if they can be aligned on and off the pitch. Amid the various options, Finchley seems to opt for a setup which moves both the duo a bit further from one another, giving each their chance to shine: Carstensen remains firmly in midfield, Bjerkness becomes part of the attacking department. And as such, Carstensen remains the lynchpin for the Whalers. The Sandfjell midfielder already became the playmaker of this top-three side at seventeen and continues to show amazing maturity. He is quite industrious for his role, with excellent vision and passing. The only thing missing from his game might be a few more goals. He can also appear a bit lower down the field, contrary to his back-up Hella Veensma who combines energy with insight and short turns. Two years with Sielhafen has given her already some experience to reap the yield on her efforts and her (only proverbial) growth is undoubted. Moving to Pesfield Trees proved to be an ace decision for her. 'Max' Dahl is an exciting talent but needs more experience.

Behind Carstensen, the balancing is picked up by the duo Bissett and Worbe. Theodor Bissett often is the first to make way in the line-up but returned under Finchley as box-to-box: he is a man with energy, stamina and more than decent feet. If he can employ those at the right time, he is a potential world beater. Next to him, Carl Worbe remains the holding midfielder, getting more and more recognition as his impact gets noted. Still with a few good years in him, he made a personal brand out of being boring, allowing 1. FC fans to call a characteristic, simple, 1-0 win a 'Worbe Dream'. In difficult games, Finchley might prefer the unconventional Breuker over the gentle Worbe: the United man shows no mercy and is notorious for bullying an opposing playmaker out of the game. Bissett, on the other hand, might be relieved of his work by either Barrington or Barnes. The former is a Bissett-light, with less stamina but slightly better feet. Jody brings a bit more grit, a ton of energy and an amazing 360 vision which makes you forget about the occasional bad touch.

.7 Jorgen Bjerkness Fort Viljan North. [TIK] 21 (26 caps/ 6 goals)
9 Till Myrrheim Sandfjell Fotball 27 (75 caps/49 goals)
11 Rohan Williams Corinth. No Longer [NPH] 28 (69 caps/26 goals)
19 Daniel Clark Sporting Noordende 24 (34 caps/ 9 goals)
21 Dieter Scharf Sielhafen 1.FC 30 (43 caps/ 6 goals)
22 Moussa Sangaré Lhor [CMT] 26 (13 caps/ 1 goal )
23 Elliott Jackson Norreborg 59 27 ( 3 caps/ 1 goal )
26 Gunvor Tofte Lydholm Forened 20 ( 0 caps)

It is a peculiar attacking trio as Finchley clearly has a different target here: one big man, two smaller players who attack the defensive line with the sting of a bee, without being wingers. Up front, one finds Till Myrrheim, a likable two meters of unfiltered firepower, with a babyface on top. A gentle giant outside the game, Myrrheim shuns no duel and weighs on an opposing defense. The numbers speak for itself, if you let the Sandfjell ace come anywhere near the box, you are putting yourself in grave danger. Despite ‘Till Torrheim’ being the topscorer, the player that everyone on the playing ground wants to be is Rohan Williams. After all, he is in all aspects a beautiful footballer. Makes the covers of the sports section with his dribbles, of the newspapers with his podcast and of the tabloids with his flirts and cars. This striker drifts between the wing and the box and somehow only scores marvelous goals. His new challenge in Nephara gives the domestic fans fewer chances to witness the most inspiring (and cheeky) player of the selection, but he starred in the Cup of Harmony.

Under Finchley, Jorgen Bjerkness rounds up the attacking trio. The talent of Fort Viljan had to show his skills coming off the bench in the World Cup qualifiers but still played a pivotal role in the results with a few decisive goals and assists. Originally an attacking midfielder, he will be making use of the spaces between defenders and midfielders with his movement and great first touch. His presence puts others on the bench, such as Dieter Scharf, a short ersatz playmaker who finds space when it doesn't exist. He is known as an einzelganger and a fremdkorper and rarely scores: and apparently that started to cost him. Still, he remains a good ace when the circumstances need someone patrolling the halfspaces. You can also expect minutes for ‘Danny’ Clark, who lost his starting spot despite some good performances. A lanky forward who scores with ease, Clark possesses the football IQ to pop up where he is needed. The Noordende signing operates close to Myrrheim, living off the balls that get pumped into that direction. The three remaining options are best characterized as role players. If Cap Nord finds themselves pinned to their own half, they can throw in lightning bolt Sangaré, but you have to make sure he uses the ball before running out of bounds. ‘The Jacker’ Jackson surpassed Fraser as the back-up for Myrrheim: his lack in style gets made up for in goals and work rate. Ideal for when ‘dirty’ is the only road left. Lastly, young kid Tofte showed he's more than fast with Lydholm and could earn first moments in the national shirt. There will be more of that in the future.

Erin Camden has made an exceptional first impression, salvaging a floundering qualifying campaign before dragging Brenecia kicking and screaming to the World Cup quarterfinals, re-establishing them as among the world's semi-elite. She's unsurprisingly rewarding that squad, making just two changes... though perhaps that has as much to do with a paucity of options.

First Team and Tactics
Image
Raised on lumpy grass pitches, waterlogged and potholed, Brenecian footballers tend to grow physical, disciplined and tough to break down, and this iteration of the national pool is no exception. The Patriots are an athletic, muscular side with plenty of pace and power, with two unpredictable, top-class wingers in Byrne and Wake who are given plenty of freedom so long as they do their work in pressing high. Camden is a loyalist at heart and rarely differs from the blueprint, but knows when the time is right to shake things up tactically or in terms of personnel, and her defensive drilling is exceptional.

Too predictable in the old 4-4-2, Brenecia have shifted to a front three in order to let the creative talent of Lienke Covolan back into the side, a sullen and bitter Nephar who disliked former manager Wright personally but responds well to Camden and to her other Nepharan brethren (Kearney, Jeong and Alderwood). This is a physical Brenecia side but, Lofthouse and the centre-halves aside, not an overly tall one; they'll look to exploit pace on the counter more than slinging in high balls. They aren't interested in holding onto possession, and are more comfortable letting the opposition overreach and taking advantage.

Common Substitutes
- Lofthouse will often replace Stokes late in games, with an advantage in height and raw physicality; she may even start when Brenecia expect to have almost none of the ball, against teams like Farfadillis
- Marietta Briggs will often be booked, and Tamara Seager will come on where necessary to help shore up the defence.
- The wingers have to do a lot of running, so Alderwood and Wakering, while some degree below the standards of their replacements, will be common sights late in games. Wright will try to keep Byrne and Wake on the pitch until they're exhausted, though.
- Rajmund Sitko will often come on for Iseult Conway in matches where more finesse is required in midfield, while Bede Cheschon offers more defensive solidity and Alyce Kearney more drive. Cheschon replacing Covolan is the most park-the-bus substitution that retains the initial formation, while replacing Covolan with Seager may signal a move to a defensive 4-2-3-1 that aims to retain a lead over a stronger opponent.

Staff
Manager - Erin Camden - Age 62
Asst. Manager - Hendry Jackson - Age 54

A midfielder of some quality, Camden earned 93 caps for Brenecia and captained them in her playing days, but has earned most of her renown as one of world football's most serial winners, first with Northern Union and then with AFC Treason. She builds dynasties through discipline, rigidity, experience and cynicism, and it's a common sight for her former players to profess an undying loyalty to her. She's turned down the Patriots job plenty of times in the past, but now, at 61, she recognises the time is right.

Goalkeepers
1 - GK - Cessair Meade (Image Rammsissil) - Age 25 - 21 caps, 7 clean sheets
Tall, athletic and reliable, Meade might be the pick of the slim bunch of up-and-coming Brenecian stoppers. Seeing a neverending wave of hotshot foreign goalkeepers arrive at Kingsgrove, she felt she had to leave to make a name for herself, but the club's still left its mark on her as a high-sweeping shot-stopper with excellent distribution.

12 - GK - Phoebe Corder (Image Ituraitz FC) - Age 31 - 33 caps, 20 clean sheets
Corder's first eight caps were followed by clean sheets, and though she hasn't managed to stay quite so imperious (and many of those matches were against minnows), her cult hero status is assured.

20 - GK - Sorcha Tanner (Image Southern Star) - Age 32 - 42 caps, 17 clean sheets
A strong and well-balanced goalkeeper, commanding in the air and rarely erring. She's not a top-class goalkeeper, as Brenecia had become used to with Woodgate and Wright, but she's consistent. Spent some time in exile from the national team.

Defenders
2 - RB - Esther Sidle (Image Miradela) - Age 28 - 7 caps
Lithe, long-haired and with a streak of quiet arrogance, Sidle's one of those few fullbacks who feels like they can really command the game from that withdrawn position. An expert at long diagonal balls cutting through defences, and no slouch at actually defending herself.

3 - LB - Nimue Culpepper (Image Sabrefell Athletic) - Age 29 - 69 caps, 2 goals
Culpepper looks strangely weathered, a lot older than her years, and perhaps that makes sense. Her best attributes are her sense of anticipation and her intelligence, which extend her fair-but-indifferent physicality and technique as far as they can go.

5 - CB - Athelney Shrine (Image Falourr) - Age 31 - 87 caps, 3 goals
One of Brenecia's many rock-solid defenders, Shrine's about as fast a sprinter as an actual shrine. Fortunately, her instincts rarely guide her astray, and she's an oasis of calm no matter the pressure, both in and out of possession.

6 - CB - Hamish Jeong Harcourt (Image Vermillion Rage) - Age 23 - 13 caps, 1 goal
The son of iconic Quebecois centre-half Hye-Min Jeong, born and raised in Nephara, almost nobody in Brenecia expected Jeong to declare for the Patriots; nevertheless, this has happened, and early signs are that Jeong could be a mainstay in the Patriots' back line for a decade. Calm and intelligent on the ball, uncompromising in the tackle, fast in recovery.

17 - RB - Caomhin Hadley (Image Sabrefell Athletic) - Age 26 - 50 caps, 1 goal
A hard-bitten, tough-tackling but above all painfully disciplined fullback. Plays with a maturity belying his years.

18 - CB - Ruadri Wheater (Image Carsby) - Age 25 - 14 caps, 1 goal
A journeyman brawler who just can't be put down for long.

22 - CB - Iucharba Killen (Image Shamrock Cathair) - Age 31 - 63 caps, 8 goals
A brutish powerhouse, Killen always lumbers a little faster than people expect. Kind of like a starving crocodile. It makes him an undeniably effective defender, though he does tend to give away a lot of penalties, and probably one of these days will end up scaring a midfielder to death.

25 - LB - Shara Chalk (Image Southern Star) - Age 25 - 8 caps
An intelligent attacking fullback who had an unconventional breakthrough as a player but has parlayed it into becoming a mainstay for a Star side challenging at the top of Brenecia. Somewhat lightweight defensively, but otherwise well-rounded.

Midfielders
4 - HM - Skaidrina Briggs (Image AC Izotz Zubia) - Age 29 - 60 caps
A tough, taciturn midfielder who has proven reliable where called upon. Tall, powerful and strong in the tackle, Briggs has a rash, youthful physicality and a tendency to see picking up a caution as indication of a job well done. Has enjoyed a remarkable consistency in a blue shirt, and is one of the few Brenecians playing for a top club, albeit in a squad role.

8 - CM - Iseult Conway (Image Wirr Tsi) - Age 31 - 112 caps, 15 goals - Captain
Quick-witted, quick-footed, and always with a smile on her face. Conway is an unflashy but diligent box-to-box shuttler with a hint of the unpredictable, and excels at bringing the ball forward between the lines. Fouls a lot, and always seems to get away with it. Without ever being an obviously exceptional talent, Conway's a centurion for her country and a mainstay for a top club.

11 - CM / AM - Lienke Covolan (Image Vermillion Rage) - Age 29 - 63 caps, 23 goals
Covolan played for Brenecia before ever setting foot in the country, but it's okay, because she's a potentially important player for the Patriots. A clever, two-footed and creative player, the rangy, arrogant, standoffish and blatantly Nepharan Covolan might be exactly what the Patriots have needed for years.

14 - DM / CM - Bede Cheschon (Image Kingsbury United) - Age 24 - 12 caps, 1 goal
A versatile and disciplined midfielder; one of Camden's favourites, someone she sees herself in.

19 - HM - Tamara Seager (Image FK Arsika) - Age 28 - 37 caps, 2 goals
A hard-working water-carrier, but with a bit of something extra about her that just elevates her above the level of so many other Brenecian players of the same archetype. She'll absolutely break a leg if needed, though.

23 - CM - Rajmund Sitko (Image West Couno United) - Age 27 - 39 caps, 6 goals
One of the more promising of this upcoming generation of Brenecian talent, Sitko's not notably physical, but just has that quiet presence of mind and always goes looking for the ball. The kind of player analysts love and casuals don't see the point in and wonder why the team works better with him than without.

24 - CM - Alyce Kearney (Image Southfell United) - Age 25 - 7 caps, 2 goals
Another of the Nepharan legion, Kearney's buy-in is contingent on Camden's presence at the top. A fearless midfielder with impeccable close control and an intense, focused personality.

26 - AM - Alaoise Rourke (Image Liria Prizren) - Age 21 - 1 cap
An enigma...

Forwards
7 - RW - Aneurin Wakering (Image CS Saint-Rémy) - Age 24 - 5 caps
A gangly, coltish winger with a deceptive change of pace. Glides past defenders.

9 - ST - Siobhan Baker (Image Anomalies) - Age 31 - 33 caps, 8 goals
A late bolter into the squad, Baker was playing in the Nepharan third tier for much of her career before blazing into life in Chromatika. She's the kind of player who proves that an eye for goal can translate from near any level, but tireless work ethic and excellent fitness mean she reliably gets in good positions.

10 - LW - Katua Byrne (Image AC Izotz Zubia) - Age 28 - 124 caps, 38 goals
Byrne's got it all. Top-class pace, fully two-footed, even relishes defensive work pressing high. She's going to go far, and she knows it, forcing a move to Audioslavia to get away from pockmarked Brenecian pitches. But after spending a long time at Itzi, has her career perhaps stalled?

13 - ST - Mor-Rioghain Stokes (Image Mountainside) - Age 26 - 45 caps, 18 goals
Stokes was considered good enough that the MiCF project, a rare case of a tail wagging a dog, decided to near-bankrupt the side trying to get Stokes on the nominally male-only league. She has the air of someone mystified she isn't one of the world's best.

15 - RW / LW - Maerhen Wake (Image 1830 Cathair) - Age 26 - 75 caps, 22 goals
A muscular powerhouse who bristles with coiled energy, menace and malice. Wake's not the best-liked in the dressing room - he's always come across a bit as the kind of man who laughs when old ladies fall over on the street - but he's a cold model professional who always looks to make an impact. At present, he's the side's obvious star.

16 - LW - Irina Alderwood (Image Mipojoseon) - Age 25 - 16 caps, 3 goals
An effective, athletic winger who lacks a real X-Factor; not a shining talent, but rather a player who has made it close to the top of the game through hard work and a relentless drive. Qualifies for Brenecia through ancestry.

21 - ST - Jadwiga Lofthouse (Image Yassaca) - Age 29 - 90 caps, 33 goals
Generally, when Union want a player, they just get one. So when a local rises through the ranks to break through, especially in a key position and at a young age, Brenecians take notice. A towering juggernaut, Lofthouse is certainly old-school but undeniably effective, and excels at helping bring others into play.

24 - ST - Lowen Murdoch (Image Newark Argyle) - Age 23 - Uncapped
A Nephar with a Brenecian grandfather, plucked with the time-honoured method of finding an odd surname, and while something of a long shot, he's hoping to kick on after struggles at Zenith level and build a career for himself. Well-rounded and athletic, a natural, powerful spearhead.
Puppet of Nephara.

CEYNE ISLES
Preferred Formation:
4-4-2
Style Modifier: 0
Playstyle: Like a crap lower-league Nepharan team, because they basically are. Big, strong and hardy.
Kit Supplier: from Anglatia
Captain: Vivi Conlan
Nickname: the Pirates
Pronunciation Guide: "You'd have to be insane to live in Ceyne."

It was frankly bizarre that the Pirates managed to push their way toward relevance last time. They have the delusion of high hopes, here and now, but it won't last. There's no way.

Unless... ?

Well, no, probably not, because most of the team's over the hill, and the manager took an A-League job.

Tactics
Image
First-choice lineup.
Built together through a handful of journeymen, most of whom have little professional experience. The Ceynes league is about as bad as professional leagues go. They play a physical, aggressive and direct style, with a little bit of creative flair just enough to liven up an otherwise predictable attack.

Staff
Manager: Kay Meriweather (NPH) - Age 57
A journeywoman manager who has spent the bulk of her career in the Nepharan third tier. Her post is full-time, requiring her to build networks and improve development in the nation.

Goalkeepers
1 - GK - Leoni Joyce - Age 34 - Cranequin City (NPH)
12 - GK - Casey Stafford - Age 27 - Rutland FC (CDG)
18 - GK - Trish Kellermann - Age 22 - Arrowhead Lake

Casey Stafford is by a distance the best goalkeeper Ceynes have ever had, athletic, powerful and agile. Mostly because Ceynes traditionally haven't had very good goalkeepers. But she was genuinely magnificent during Ceynes' fairytale run to the bronze medal.

Defenders
2 - RB - Trici Lea - Age 19 - Stahlburg City (NPH)
3 - LB - Irina Salisu - Age 21 - Endeavour Brenecia (BRE)
5 - CB - Micah Kpozo - Age 23 - New Brinemouth
6 - CB - Cromwell Thorne - Age 33 - Rosbank Town (BRE)
13 - CB - Gerhard Lukonde - Age 28 - Knetyohai City FC (CMT)
19 - RB - Zara Gandolph - Age 22 - New Rozelle
22 - LB - Cryss Riedler - Age 21 - Roschester Pride
24 - CB - Gale Ngom - Age 27 - Roschester City

Trici Lea, a Nephara youth international, is an astonishingly fortunate pickup, and may be the enduring legacy of their bronze medal run. The defence is largely gutted from two years ago, and looks the distinct weak point of the squad as things stand.

Midfielders
4 - HM - Phenalope Carden - Age 31 - AFK Imperialismus (ZRH)
7 - RM - Niall Kuol - Age 27 - Thor's Rest Storm (COR)
8 - CM - Morgan Brandis - Age 31 - Randwick Town (BRE)
11 - LM - Meretricious Keane - Age 25 - Atlético Augusta (DAR)
15 - CM - Garrard Lavelle - Age 22 - Locksley (NPH)
16 - LM - Berenice Tzaha - Age 27 - Waterfleet (TLI)
18 - HM - Deandra Maker - Age 24 - Eriksson Icecaps (COR)
20 - RM - Kamalde Alexander - Age 20 - Freeport Sharks
25 - AM - Zander Coleman - Age 25 - Wyndham Athletic
26 - CM - Emile Cruickshank - Age 23 - AFK Imperialismus (ZRH)

A new core is starting to shine through, but there's still a role for the old guard to play. They'll be playing a straightforward 4-4-2 and the role of Carden and Keates is primarily to keep things quiet, win the ball and get it moving forward down the wings. They're seasoned and clever enough to get that done. Tzaha and Kuol are a bit more than just straightforward crossers, though, offering some trickery and deftness.

Forwards
9 - ST - Sanguine Kamau - Age 30 - Hanai Breakers (CMT)
10 - ST - Remus Talabec - Age 18 - Raven River (NPH)
14 - ST - Moran Rivers - Age 22 - Falston Bohemians
17 - ST - Ingrid Gravehurst - Age 28 - Real Pablo FC (BOL)
21 - ST - Howe Carrigan - Age 29 - Baptists (SFD)

The Pirates actually have quite a capable striker corps at this stage, and it appears that for the most part the combination of Kamau's athleticism and Gravehurst easy ruthlessness in front of goal will be first-choice, with the towering figure of Birch an obvious Plan B.
Former Nepharan territory, former Anglatian puppet, current Brenecian puppet. It's complicated, but probably not as much as it sounds.

SYLESTONE NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

World Cup 89 Qualifiers

Image

Image

OVERVIEW

Located in the far east of Esportiva, Sylestone is an equatorial nation home to roughly 30 million residents and while the vast, vast majority are humans, Sentients and even a small cluster of elves live on specific areas of the island, which has a size of roughly 700,000 kilometres squared. For the very first time in the nation’s history, though, Mytanar football manager Mojmir Anac’s squad to the 34th Campionato Esportiva and following World Cup Qualifiers - marking the return of international football for Sylestone in over half a decade - was composed of both Sentients as well as humans. In ages past, managers would prefer to not mix the two races out of fear for how that would go and with the Sentient sides almost always receiving the opportunity to play in tournaments while the humans sat in front of their televisions and watches, the vast majority of the Sylestonean population began to become distressed about this obvious favouritism. In fact, aside from the one Campionato Esportiva in the Licentian Isles that saw the human side capitulate to one point from three matches, they never actually received an official go.

But upon the heralded return of Sylestone to football and football to Sylestone, the appointment of Mojmir Anac changed all of that. Although a match between a mixed XI against Quebec and Shingoryeo had occurred the year before as part of a friendly series containing some of the multiverse’s biggest names, last year’s 34th Campionato Esportiva marked the very first time the two races shared the same half of a football field in an official game, or larger tournament. Although a mini-cup between the Sentients, Evermark, Tikariot and Quebec and Shingoryeo in Chamberley that saw the hosts’ only points come in a 2-2 draw with Evermark, results ever since have been the exact opposite of disappointing, and culminated in Anac being nominated as one of five nominees for International Manager of the Year in the recent Testiculos.

In South Newlandia for the 34th Campionato Esportiva, Sylestone’s only two losses came against Esportivan GIANTS Tumbra, including one in extra time. Aside from that, the Sentients made history with an 8-2 triumph over Macbon to secure qualification to the round of 16 for the first time in the nation’s history - three prior ventures into Esportiva’s premier football competition all ended in the group stage. But the Sylestone train didn’t stop there. Under Anac’s careful, precise management and coaching, they broke down Brenecia in penalty kicks, continuing the nation’s record of never having lost from the spot before they succumbed in the 117th minute to Tumbra.

A successful Campionato Esportiva campaign, sure. But the World Cup Qualifiers - they were the real beast. Coming in as the only unranked nation in the group, a top half finish would be considered a huge success for Anac’s side, even having tested Tumbra and beaten Brenecia mere weeks before taking on eventual qualifiers Jeruselem in Betham. Anac, though, was not about to accept that. Throughout the course of the gruelling 22-matchday campaign, the Sentients conceded a grand total of nine goals, with only Audioslavia’s defence proving less penetrable. From a team that had never played before a year ago, to boast what could seriously be considered the second best defence in the multiverse was an achievement that frankly, no one saw coming. Over 180 minutes of football, eventual octofinalists and tenth-ranked Kandorith were unable to score, while Jeruselem were defeated at their home ground as one of only three losses throughout their entire campaign. Only Eura were able to find a way through courtesy of the sheer quality of star striker Sophie Singh, recording two wins over the Sentients… and yet, could not manage better than a fifth-placed finish in the group.

And that’s what truly made Mojmir Anac a household name, as well as those of some of Sylestone’s star players, such as the Brick Wall, Hugo Mornington, Gemma Rodway, Eden Holt and Raphael Brown. With 44 points from 22 games, it was enough to finish ahead of the likes of New Gelderland, Eura and even Tjorl - a side of whom the Sentients defeated 4-0 at home on the final matchday to secure a top three finish behind Jeruselem and Kandorith, and earning them a spot in the World Cup Qualifying playoffs for the first time in Sylestonean history.

Unfortunately, though, it was not meant to be. Up against a Huayramarcan side famous for their ultra-aggressive style of play, the Sentients crumbled, conceding eight goals over 180 minutes of football, made even worse by Hugo Mornington seeing red just eight minutes into the first fixture of the two. After a year of trying, was the key to breaching Sylestone’s famous back four as simple as all out attack?

Esportiva shall certainly test the theory.

Nickname: The Sentients
Formation: 4-4-1-1 → 4-2-3-1 or 5-4-1

MANAGER

Mojmir Anac Image (M, 38)
He’s a cult hero in Sylestone, and he fully deserves every skerrick of praise he has received. Not even a year into coaching, to have already been nominated as a candidate for the International Manager of the Year is truly spectacular, and in reality, he’s only just getting started. A former centre back with Olympia Thessia, Anac has already built a reputation for coaching defensive-minded football, with a strong preference for letting opponents dominate and then attacking them on the counter, giving up possession but certainly not giving up goals. Originally, Anac was employed by the Sylestonean Football Association (SFA) to attempt to unify the two races but with the nation’s human footballers beginning to outshine their counterparts from the Sentient city of Kirkham, that’s becoming less and less of a problem each and every day. Anac will push his players to their limits and demand lots of them but at the end of the day, he used to be a player as well, and knows just how hard that can be day in, day out.

GK: Ryan Macleay 23 M 0 0 Pesfield Trees Image

Despite the appearance of the Brick Wall in the recent Testiculos shortlist due to its superb performances with a struggling Kirkham Appliances outfit in the Toilet League, the Sentient’s inability to actually catch the ball has seen the Mytanar manager opt for Georgina Fuller as his first choice shotstopper. Throughout her career, Fuller has recorded a history for being not the most convincing goalkeeper and can be scarily inconsistent, although her time with Alcassar 1896 FC in Tikariot has worked wonders in transforming her into a more reliable all-round player. Although she lacks the composure of the Brick Wall, her mobility in the goalmouth is next to none - at least, not in Sylestone - and is more than capable with the ball at her feet - another thing her main rival struggles with. And then there’s Ryan Macleay, whose callup over the likes of Verity Cavendish and Callum Holmes speaks volumes about his work at Pesfield Trees over the past two seasons. At only 23 years of age, he’s still got a lot to work on, but that will come with experience. For now, he’s more than reliable between the pegs, and is a common appearance in Toilet League goalkeeping highlight reels.

DEFENDERS
LB: Eden Holt 28 F 25 3 Pesfield Trees Image

CB: Alexander Nutt 24 M 0 0 Tihon Image
RB: Lesley Keller 25 F 11 1 Straton Image
RB: Toilet ?? ?? 223 8 Northbury FC Image

And now for the list you’ve all been waiting for - the famous Sylestonean back line, with that fame earned by conceding a single-digit number of goals during the most recent World Cup Qualifying campaign, averaging just 0.41 goals conceded per ninety minutes. Revolving around new captain Hugo Mornington of Hesham, the back four will look to achieve higher and higher honours with their defensive prowess over the next few years, especially with Audioslavia just pipping them for the title of “best defence in the multiverse” at the back end of the qualifying campaign. Due to a red card he sustained in the playoff against Huayramarca, Mornington will be unavailable for selection in the Sentients’ opening fixture against Gouvanarch, with 22-year-old defensive Alana Faucett the likely candidate to take his place, with the control of the defence switching to Sylestone’s other Testiculos nominee, left back and Pesfield Trees superstar Eden Holt. Alongside fellow wingback Lesley Keller, Holt will be bombing up and down the wing on the counter and as one of the fastest players in all of Sylestone, is usually able to drop back fast enough if she is unsuccessful. Whilst playing with Cayden Holmes on the left, it’s not rare for the two to swap positions to give Holt a crack at goal if she’s particularly on song. Rounding out the back four is the Hand Sanitiser, although its role has come under fire as of late, with Faucett rising through the ranks and Sophia Pearson still consistent as ever despite her relocation to Pesfield. Even Alexander Nutt, whose long-awaited callup has arrived just after a life-changing transfer to Tihon in the Red League - the best league in the multiverse. And guess where he was nurtured?

Pesfield.

MIDFIELDERS

LM: Cayden Holmes 30 M 16 2 Avanaroch White Wings Image

CM: Max Paterson 31 M 13 1 Chamberley City Image
RM: Abigail Jones 28 F 22 3 Pria City Image
RM: Fridge ?? ?? 242 25 Fridge FC Image

While the overall calibre of quality may not be as good in the Sylestonean midfield as it is in the defence, with players in Tumbra, Nephara and Chromatika just to name three, it can’t be that bad. Having been awarded Toilet League Player of the Season twice in a row for the Pesfield Trees before securing a record transfer to Newark Argyle for a whopping six million NSD, she’s undoubtedly one of the country’s best players, if not the best. Between her and Belgrave’s Raphael Brown, the duo form a formidable central midfield partnership, with Rodway the more creative and aggressive of the two while Brown is more likely to play as more of a defensive midfielder, and even drop back to create a back five if necessary. In the reserves, Chamberley City’s Max Paterson is a very similar character to Brown and is likely to be the former skipper’s first choice replacement, while Tikariot-based Callum Blair and the Bar Stool have just that little bit of extra flair to their game.

On the wings, while Cayden Holmes is more than capable of playing as an aggressive winger, much of his time at the Avanaroch White Wings has been as a left back, hence why he’s often alternating positions with Eden Holt depending on the state of the game, or even if they feel like it - Anac, after all, allows it as long as both know their roles in each position. Instead, it is 22-year-old Colbrook whizz-kid who possesses the attacking flair on the left flank and will more than likely be used if going for victory. On the right wing, the opposite is true, though. The more aggressive-minded Abigail Jones of Pria City in Chromatika is considered the best option the Sentients have, while the Fridge - who can also play more centrally if required - is the substitute who can play a little bit further back to hang onto a lead, or even a draw depending on the opponent.

ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS

CAM: Rose Fleetwood 30 F 28 8 Newark Argyle Image
CAM: Cameron Keyes 30 M 22 3 Lakewood United Image
CAM: Brett Sarcav-Jones 17 M 0 0 Avondale City Image

There have been three tournaments since Mojmir Anac took over the reigns of the Sylestonean national football team and each time, there has been a different third-choice attacking midfielder partnering the old(ish) heads of the Tumbran-based Rose Fleetwood and Cameron Keyes, both of whom have developed the experience to pass onto the next generation and specifically, 17-year-old Avondale City wonderkid Brett Sarcav-Jones. As the third choice “10”, there is a very real chance that he may not receive much game time, if any at all, but one thing is for certain and that is that the experience will do him a world of good. Having torn up the Toilet League as a substitute over the final third of last season to take the Lime Greens so close to their inaugural domestic title, he was a bolter for squad selection, but no one else really quite deserved it as much as him. Meanwhile, Rose Fleetwood is likely to start most, if not every, game, with Lakewood United’s Cameron Keyes coming on as a “super-sub” to make a game-changing contribution in the last half hour of the match. If those two can complete their roles, then there’s nothing stopping Sylestone from scoring another eight goals in a match.

FORWARDS

CF: Riley Strathfield 25 M 12 5 Chardonnay Rangers Image
CF: Hayden Blamey 25 M 0 0 Chamberley City Image

It’s crazy to think that the two forwards who were selected for the 34th Campionato Esportiva in South Newlandia just a year ago now find themselves out of the team - one due to international retirement to take care of family and the other because of lack of form. Instead, Riley Strathfield, who is well-known for making the most of opportunities up front after spending years under Tahlia Dawson at AFC Droves appears likely to start, rounding off an excellent year in which he has resultantly confirmed a transfer to the Chardonnay Rangers. Behind him is Hayden Blamey, a player who thoroughly deserves his chance at the level after winning the Toilet League Golden Boot award with eighteen magnificent goals for Chamberley City, guiding them into IFCF competition for the very first time. With both still only 25, some good performances here will certainly indicate promising signs for the future.

The Free Land of Drehda (Drey-da) is a medium sized, recently formed nation with a burgeoning history and international reputation. The concept of Drehdan nationhood has existed for at least 200 years however the country was only formally established in 2020, following a declaration of victory in a long-running, viciously attritional war of seccession against Maxtopia.

The capital city is Fort Hope, a costal city which has developed around a historic naval fortification of the same name. The city and the fort at it's centre are so-named after a legendary last-stand battle in the late 1990s which saw Lieutenant Colonel James Clancy and his force of just 230 troops hold-out for 14 months of siege against the complete force of the Maxtopian military. Defeat would have meant the complete destruction of the Drehdan separatist forces, however, LTC Clancy and his small band of warriors held firm and were eventually able to keep the dream of independence and liberty alive. The miraculous story of survival was seen as a turning point in the independence campaign and the starting point for the eventual road to victory against the Maxtopian oppressors. In honour of the symbolic importance of the achievements and sacrifice, LTC Clancy formally bestowed the name of Fort Hope. The city has stood as a beacon of national pride and freedom.

Since that great battle, a moderately sized city has sprung up around the ruins of the military installion and Fort Hope now stands as a city of just under 2 million residents and is home to two prominent football clubs. Drehdan people are generally a calm and respectable type, but they're near rabid passion and full-blooded patriotism tends to spring to the fore when it comes to watching their sporting heroes.

The Free Land has a unicameral democratic Parliamentary system, with a First Secretary as head of state. The government is currently lead by the National Progress party however the nation finds itself in a state of political flux as the victor of the last election, Terry Wallace, has been forced to step down from his role due to serious medical problems. The country is currently led by an interim First Secretary and is gearing up for a snap election to be held in the coming months.

The Drehdan people are wildly passionate about sport. Football, cricket and boxing all have well-established professional systems. Hockey, rugby union, basketball and netball are all slated to have both Men's and Women's professional structures put in place under the Elite Performance Model which is due to start for the next on-season cycle. The Elite Performance Model will see six franchises compete across each sport and the new system is set to make it's debut at the Drehdan National Grand Prix for track and field events.

The current football structure includes two divisions of 22 clubs and a national knock-out competition (the Football Association of Drehda Cup - FAD Cup). As well as the introduction of six new Franchises in a premier division, the next cycle will see the incorporation of two expansion leagues at the lower levels below the Second Division. The first division title was recently won by Cadderick Rovers after they defeated Currilow FC in the play off final and Metlock Town FC are the current FAD Cup holders.

First Win: Drehda 3–2 Brenecia (CE 34)
Largest Loss: Esportivan Darmen 5–1 Drehda (CE 34)
Latest Game: Neomaris 3–2 Drehda (CE 34)

After a miserable CE34, Drehda were forced to part ways with their first ever national coach Darren Billers and enter this competition under then watchful eye of 36 year old Jessica Greenwood. Expect the side to line up in their typical 3-5-1-1 formation with width coming from the hardworking wingbacks. A few personnel changes have been made and unsurprisingly the squad is dominated by representatives from the champions Cadderick Rovers and runners up Currilow. Up front, Donovan Reede provides speed and creative movement from the #10 position while national talismanic striker Sándor Mészöly won't offer much by way of tracking back or constant running, but is always liable to produce a match winning moment of magic from nothing.

Roaster:

Goalkeeper:

#01 Kalke Soraski

One of the most well rounded Keeper of Katterimunk, the man managed to grab the Golden Glove of Katterimunk's Liga Premera twice in a row. He even showed an amazing performance at the international stage conceding only 5 goals the entire tournament in 6 games, making him one of the best keepers in the tournament. The man, playing for the Premera Champs of the first season, he showed his prowess in both seasons.

#30 Aryank Borrakh

A replacement to the retired Shah Khalif, the Anceburn Keeper Aryank is arguably the best keeper in Liga Premera only behind Soraski. Banging 3 consecutive cleansheets in the league, one being against the offensive supergiant Vrord, Borrakh showed that he can carry Khalif's legacy forward. He showed a good display in the most recent qualifiers for the world cup

Defenders:

#03 Ahan Khan - RB:

The Vrord star defender, Khan was great as a fullback controlling the defense as well as helping the attack at the wing upward. The man was a beast at keeping the attacking winger detached from the rest of the team, always on his toes to snatch the ball up causing a turnover. The man performed amazing from the right against most of the opposition, performing as the perfect replacement for Abhinav during his injury.

#15 Abhinav Shaha - RB

A more orthodox sideback, Shaha prefers to play along with the Centre back and defensive mid to trap the opposing player pressing them to commit mistakes or give up the possession completely. A speedy player, Abhinav is an amazing pressing player and along with his brother on the other end, he is capable of showing an amazing game throughout. A critical player in the world cup, Abhinav managed to outshine his brother on the left. An aggressive fullback that constantly pushes up to help the attack and also manages to come down to help the defense.

#04 Parukh Shayar - CB

The best defender of the season for Katterimunk, Shayar is capable of controlling the entire defensive line with good accuracy. His capability of keeping the line under control with proper pressuring and offside traps is just amazing. His offside traps were most effective in the games against Cyene where he managed to trap 3 offsides, one of which even managed to bang the net. It is hoped that he will also show his amazing game in this tourney as well.

#06 Shane Loesteen - CB:

A good defender, contrasting Shayar's cool and commanding demeanor, Loesteen is a hot headed sweeper clearing away most balls that come close to him. One of the most aggressive players, Loesteen has a high number of cards to his name. In the recent qualifiers the man managed to perfectly control the spread of the defense as Abhinav pushed up to join the attack.

#27 Vaibhav Shaha - LB

Brother to Abhinav, his game is quite similar to his brother. Yet he was, arguably, the weaker of the two, at least when it comes to international games. In the second season of Liga Premera, the two brothers managed to defend quite profusely for Chedo, but in the international games at Campionato and the world cup, he failed to make an Impression with many board members even thinking of dropping the man. The coach, though, thinks he is integral to the team.

#29 Ulter Akimov - LB

A pressing and physical player, the man can defeat any forward with his physical game. The man is the power of the team, defending like a boar. Yet he has one of the least fouls in the league. He proved his worth more in the Campionato, showing the opposition his physical strength with his powerful, yet seemingly legal tackles, saving many chances that helped carry the team to the Knockouts.

Midfielders:

#10 Garf Shinoda - CAM:

The one and only MVP, Garf is the brain of the team. The perfect Playmaker, can turn the tides of the game with perfectly timed and positioned pass that is guaranteed to go through and create a beautiful chance of scoring. Though most of the time his name does not come as his passes are mostly the 2nd Assist and hence his stats stay only in the back while his teammates shine. No wonder he is in here!

#17 Kesh Lal - CM:

Called the 'Golden Devil', Chedo midman Lal was a unique but deserved pick for the tournament. The man has shown his talent all throughout the season. His passing, his dribbling and his aggressiveness are all perfect and suited for the best mids. And even though he was not named the Mid of the year, he still is a strong talent on the squad. Though his world cup performance was average, it is hoped he will do better this time around.

#08 Rosul Arikovic - RM:

Arikovic was one of the few wingers that shined in the league last season. Having given perfectly timed crosses, he created multiple opportunities for the Xuvale strikers to score. It is his long oassing that allowed Lorenz to shine and stack multiple goals and make his mark in the world cup. And it is expected of him to give similar crosses this tourney as well.

#20 Shane Robbs - RM:

Robbs is and flanking right midman, dedicated to run by the righ. But unlike Rosul, the man likes to cut through to the middle close to the box and give a pass out to the advancing strikers. Proving his worth in the international stage even before his premera debut, the man had a lot of pressure to perform. Yet he managed to give a decent performance in all the game he got. Selected again for this tournament.

#07 Yuzman Aftar - LM:

The captain of the Ipheburn team and the national team, Aftar is a comparitively weak but highly agile player, capable of running through the field up and down helping in both offense and defense. And though his crosses are not as good as Arikovic's his speed and short passing make it up for it. Scoring the first international goal for Katterimunk, Aftar played amazingly throughout the cup, and continued his form through the Liga Premera giving Ipheburn their first title.

#18 Saloke Patrine - LM:

The left footed genius, Patrine was the spine of the Inaspolis team. The man playing with his quick speed and unpredictable shooting and passing capabilities with be a problem for the opposition to face. The man was named the best midfielder, and his play does keep up his name.

#21 San Kun Lee - CDM:

Called the 'Super Lee' by the fans, Kun Lee is the star of the Mando Club. The Vice-Captain, he is quick and fast making speedy plays to quickly move the ball up the field for scoring. Most of his plays are rather defensive letting the opposition keep the ball, only to find opportunities in the opposition's mistakes.

#08 Sohail Afroz - CDM:

One of the leading assisters in the first season, and the lead assister in the second season of Liga Premera, Afroz debuted in the national team in one of the most prestigous tournaments for emerging football nations in all of NS multiverse, the Baptism of fire allowing Katterimunk semi final finish. This Defensive Midman now has the urge to win the most prestigious tournament in all of the region.

Forwards:

#22 Trish Khomov - ST:

The most well-known striker in all of the nation, Chedo striker Khomov won the Golden boot scoring 17 goals in 25 games and is a beast on the field. His amazing hat trick against Acrehull won the hearts of millions in the nation. His ability to finish and create chances on the field makes him able to switch between a Creator forward and a finishing striker on the field, making his plays unpredictable. Many deemed him unstoppable, including the Chedo Head coach Asimov, who stated that this man is here to create history.

#09 Isaac Lorenz - ST:

Isaac, the Vrord star and winner of the golden hat, had the highest number of assists in the 122 season. Called the "Flash of Football" by many Katteri, Isaac impresses scouts and coaches and antagonizes the opposing defenders with his quick movement on the field. Also, one of the best passers in the league, his chemistry with co-striker Donest is amazing, making them one of the best duo Liga Premera had ever seen, where many experts stated that the duo is destined to make history. The man shined in the World Cup Qualifiers, scoring the most goals for the team in those 22 games.

#24 Ankor Preistiv - CF: Star for the Inaspolis City, Ankor grew up in a poor background to rise up to stardom and become a star striker for Inaspolis. A well rounded CF, Ankor was named the Emerging Athlete of the year - the highest award won for athletics by Katterimunk athletes under the age of 18 - twice! Yet as he entered the league, he suffered an injury, causing him to miss a season and go out of form. In the first Liga Premera he performed well, but not good enough to get chance for the national team in the Campionato. But as he showed improvement in the second season, he was selected for the team in the world cup. Though his performance was overshadowed by Lorenz's, he managed to make an impression on the fans.

#19 Shoa Ahiko - LST:

The Ipheburn Creator was one of the most sought-after players in the league for his debut. Of course, he chose to stay in his home team of Ipheburn. Playing the left striker position, this man is a physical menace with amazing short and long passing skills as well as tremendously accurate shooting. The man was named forward of the year and is expected to be a starter.

MD2 at South Newlandia
MD3 vs United Dispian Quarters
MD4 at Tumbra

MANAGEMENT STAFF
Manager: Mazeed al Quadri(46)
Assistant manager: Mahdi al Hares (39)
Goalkeeping Coach – Moosha al Khalaf (44)
Defensive Coach – Humaidaan al Saber (51)
Offensive Coach – Kameel al Amin (60)
Physiotherapist – Uwais al Farah (42)

SQUAD

GOALKEEPERS

NAME AGE CLUB
Arkaan al Mousa (22 Y/O) Rashouf FC
Faaris al-Mansur (27 Y/O) Al Wadedjah Tigers

This might be considered a bit of an risky affair, heading out with a squad comprising of only two goalkeepers. Furthermore, the veteran 22 year old Arkaan al Mousa will be the starting option of al Quadri's debutant side. Surely al Mousa is the fastest gloves in the Republic but whether he will be able to reproduce his performances in an international competition is still a questionable affair. Faaris al-Mansur stays in the squad to provide relief to al Mousa if required.

DEFENDERS

NAME AGE CLUB
Haroon al Mansour (30 Y/O) Al Khuhsa Albahaara
Azim Mahfouz (23 Y/O) Al Hassanieh
Jaseer al Haider (24 Y/O) Tabaqiya United
Irfan el-Pashia (32 Y/O) Aq Salim al Jabat
Faraj al-Salama (21 Y/O) Mastoodah Musafirins
Adnaan el Kanaan (18 Y/O) Aq Salim al Jabat
Turki al Saab (28 Y/O) Haqlagash Porters

Al Quadri considers his defense lineup to be pretty reliable. Led by the experienced al Mansour, captain of Al Khuhsa Albahaara, Mahfouz will join him in the centre. To widen the scope of defense and also for initiating counter attacks, Jaseer al Haider and Irfan el-Pashia will take the extreme wings of defense. With four defenders at the back, Al Quadri is surely moving with a more defensive tactical setup.

MIDFIELDERS

NAME AGE CLUB
Moosha el-Shums (29 Y/O) Abu Hurib
Omar Maklouf © (27 Y/O) Abu Hurib
Rajaa al Saleh (28 Y/O) Haqlagash Porters
Jawad Abdullah (31 Y/O) Rashouf FC
Najib Jafari (26 Y/O) Abu Hurib
Fath Usman (28 Y/O) Al Khuhsa Albahaara

This is where the captain finally steps up, taking the position of centre midfielder and guiding Moosha el-Shums and Rajaa al Saleh on his left and right respectively. Moosha el-Shums and Omar Maklouf have been playing together since their academy days and by now, have formed an integral part of Abu Hurib's midfield. If their partnership is reflected on the field for internatiol games, al Quadri can be confident of a strong midfield. There's also the likes of al Saleh, Abdullah and Jafari, all of whom come with immense experience.

FORWARDS

NAME AGE CLUB
Mohammad Jafri (30 Y/O) Al Wadedjah Tigers
Abdul Jaleel Irfan (29 Y/O) Aq Salim al Jabat
Muneeb al-Dajani (24 Y/O) SC Rafhabha
Numair Amiri (19 Y/O) Abu Hurib
Raaji al-Azzi (23 Y/O) Al Hassanieh

Lastly, there's the attacking line up, something that al Quadri believes "still needs improvement." Muneeb al-Dajani, who had been recently termed as one of the best youngsters in the Asghari League has gained a permanent spot and under the guidance of the experienced Jafri and Abdul Irfan, he is expected to deliver well enough to keep the team surviving on their debut.

LOZHO FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION presents...

The Lozhoan National Football Team!

A History of Lozhoan Football

Association football is one of the most popular sports in Lozho. During a daily five minute factory break one day, Lozhoan workers decided to kick a leftover bottle of Sozha Soda around in an improvisation of football. The bosses of Ghezhan Pens and Paper Inc. were so impressed that they decided to establish the first football club in Lozho, Ghezhan Pens and Paper FC, later shortened to Ghezhan City. The Lozho Championship (since renamed) Lozho First Division was later established, all between teams that had been established by factory bosses. Lozhoan football is a very lucrative venture, but most players play out of love, and thus are more than willing to sign four year contracts for a few Lozhons a month.

After a successful foray into the World Cup cycle, which whilst ended with a demolishing in the Cup of Harmony group stages, has created a foundation for manager Brett Zimberg to work on. With Lozho about to enter their third ever Campionato Esportiva, glory is just at arm's reach.

The Coaching Team

Head Coach: Brett Zimberg
Assistant Coach: Jaxueline Plattenhardt

Brett Zimberg was formerly a PE teacher in a Shezhen high school, until his teams became so good he had to encourage them to stop scoring too many goals and humiliating opposition. A manager who can harness the great potential of this Lozhoan squad, an exciting project awaits Pelicans fans.

Starting XI

Goalkeeper: Bonzo De Jong, 31

The current goalkeeper for Gosport Pelicans, De Jong has had a long and esteemed career. Starting his career as a Pelican mascot holding up a sign to fast food restaurants, De Jong quickly rose up the ranks with his signature jumping technique. Despite being only one metre tall, De Jong can jump to anywhere in the goal and make a save, earning the nickname 'Bonzo the Guy Who Can Jump Really Far and High Which Saves Shots on Target'.

Left Full Back: Fazj Srejzjajk, 23

This fast-paced left wingback has been making waves ever since her debut for Langhan Town two years ago. Having recently been signed by Lozhoan titans Protchen United for a lucrative deal, Srejzjajk is looking to make her impact on the international stage as well. Her speed makes her a dangerous wingback who can strike opponents on the counter.

Left Centre Back: Zoufal Cerezaki, 25

With stellar performances at the club level, Zoufal Cerezaki's inclusion over Penny Butterfield was a no-brainer. Cerezaki's hard man persona and slide tackles strikes fear into the hearts or his opponents.

Right Centre Back: Romulus, 25

In red-hot form, Romulus has been a key side in Shezhen Athletic this season. His former manager at club level clearly has faith that his defensive stability will help to steady this leaky Lozhoan ship.

Right Full Back: Cartzon Zohzo, 21

Another young wingback, Zohzo and Srejzjajk make up what's called 'Lozho's Finest Pair of Wings: Sponsored by Lozho's Finest Pair of Wings Fast Food Inc.'. While he is one of the younger members on the team, Zohzo is proving his worth with his outings at the Gosport Pelicans, having broken into the team as a teenager. He has the potential to be amongst the all time greats.

Left Midfielder: Henry Blyth, 29

The captain of the team, Blyth has both experience and a passion to improve. A one club man for Shezhen Athletic, Blyth has developed a reputation for his strong leadership and passing skills. He's also an avid online gamer, and regularly plays Valorant with his teammate Obamovich, developing his skills as a captain by strengthening his vocal cords when he has to insult "useless teammates".

Central Midfielder: Marc Benson, 26

A box-to-box midfielder for Shezhen Athletic, Benson seems to have unlimited stamina. He dominates the middle of the park and helps to break up attacks and start counters, an essential piece of Zimberg's system.

Right Midfielder: Pazron Droozle, 27

Nicknamed "The Droozler", Droozle is known for his "droozling" skills, or in layman's terms "dribbling". Droozle can droozle a ball all around the pitch in an exhilarating display of end-to-end football. Rumour has it there's no defender he hasn't droozled past.

Left Winger: Fatrouza Smith, 22

Fatrouza Smith may come from a wealthy family of the Smith Textbooks and Notebooks and Notepads Company wealth, but he's a golden boy on and off the pitch. Speedy, crossy, and shooty, this winger can get a ball in the box any time of the day, no questions asked.

Right Winger: Zed Zoan, 31

A pacey right winger, Zed Zoan runs up and down the flanks of the pitch in record time. Whilst his crossing may have room for improvement, he makes it up with his ability to cut deep into the opposition boxes to attempt long shots.

Striker: Paxton Obamovich, 29

A refugee from West Barack and East Obama fleeing persecution for his love of football, Paxton Obamovich has taken up citizenship in Lozho and has already been banging in the goals. A target man that always makes the ball connect with his head, he just needs to jump a little bit and boom! You've conceded again. Yes, there are a lot of people who can head well on our team.

MD 1 vs Drehda

A lot of people will say that the All-Greens are an easy opener to kick off the group stage. On the other hand, a lot of people are dumb idiots. So far, the track record of up-and-comers has two group stage eliminations but those looking under the hood will notice that Drehda has one passion. Slaying dragons. Few Esportivan nations can boast that they kept Tumbra at a draw in the last four years, the last Tumbran loss of points ahead of their current 13-game win streak. But what they did against Brenecia in South Newlandia caused even more shockwaves beyond the region. The stunning 3-2 victory did not get a proper follow-up but the Whalers better be warned: this opponent could end up being the one holding the harpoon.

From a tactical viewpoint, the talismanic Sándor Mészöly is the one to watch: holding him back will form a key test for Luuk Vennema. Rumors about an international retirement after this cycle for his guide and master Van Hilvaren started buzzing and a match like this (with Van Hilvaren serving a one-game ban) will form a litmus test to see if the Columbia City man can be our defense leader. Keeping his Cadderick teammates from finding Mészöly requires ninety minutes of full focus for Vennema.

MD 2 vs Racing

One of the most ancient nations in the region, Racing will take on their twenty-first Campionato Esportiva. While this has not yet resulted in a semi-final run, the Racers could be somewhat seen as the regional equivalent to Eastfield Lodge: they might not make the late stages of the tournament, but any team that takes them on lightly can and will get punished for it. The most gerund of Esportivan nations aims to bounce back after a disastrous XXXIV edition, in which they only won a single point amid four defeats: a wounded animal, so to speak.

For Cap Nord, this will be the second match against this opponent. During the inaugural Derby Series, we welcomed the fellow north-westerners, only to discover these were not the hoped for pushovers. The confrontation at 'the Berk' needed a typical Myrrheim goal to see us keep the win at home. Few players will have great memories of that difficult game, apart from Jody Barnes and Jorgen Bjerkness. Barnes, who has now joined Marzinn to form a Capnordic enclave at Cleorough, made her international debut while Bjerkness showed himself the best player on the pitch. For Fort Viljan's midfielder, this Campionato will be crucial to see what Finchley has in mind for him. Moving into a starter role seems an upside, but his impact looked smaller in his new role from the left side. Bjerkness will want to show that he too deserves the driver's seat of this Cap Nord: games like this one form a great opportunity to do so.

MD 3 vs Robostania

The first three appearances of RoboCorp's company line-up were low in impact but that has turned around recently. Robostania are part of a select club of nine who made it to the final sixteen of all three last editions. Their persistent presence in the knock-out stages tells you quite enough why this is a third seed to fear for Cap Nord. The Red Dragons play a frivolous 4-3-3 which occasionally sees them as the losing part of a rout, but more often it ends up in a high-scoring game in their advantage. The grim 'Esportivan undertakers' nickname confirms it is a bad idea to give Burghan, Trevuss or Kirawn too much space.

It was something which our eleven witnessed first-hand in South Newlandia, when the Red Dragons were the better side in the opening half at the Elephant Dome. Down 1-2, the Whalers fought back, courtesy of an excellent Simon Carstensen. Finchley expressed in the lead-up to the tournament that he has no doubt about his number ten, calling the 22-year old the 'concrete of his tactical plan' and the 'first name on the drawing board'. The Sandfjell star can handle pressure and he has a silver medal in the last Campionato to show for it. But he fell apart with his teammates against Aleirave in our last game and if he wants the international recognition, with top clubs spending eight figures and appearances on Testiculos lists, consistency will be needed.

MD 4 vs Josifovo

At this point, we might have discovered whether this fiery eleven will soon disappear in the mists of time or if they are writing the first chapter of a weighty tome. The few signals about this reclusive nation point in the latter direction, with loyalty being a keyword: the fans love their team over their mothers and with the right inspiration, this could be a handsy, brawly, annoying opponent for anyone. Key question is whether their unusual coaching staff structure along ethnic lines will form the basis for rifts or will rather gel the players together. In the latter case, young talent Pece Trajkovski could hurt our backline.

But one does not need a quartet of gaffers to kick off questions about the locker room. The initial dishes served by the new Lozhoan chef Pazron Finchley were well received: more guts, more clarity, more ingenuity and a good number of goals. With that on the menu, even the fickle Capnordic guest can enjoy foreign cuisine. But crashing out against the Seagulls left a sour aftertaste for the debut tournament. And suddenly, all those admirable ingredients matter less: results are needed. Many domestic observers start their observations from the quarters onwards, a group stage exit would be a disaster. Needless to say that anything less than a clear victory over Josifovo will result in trouble for Finchley.

MD 5 vs Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom

Is the Campionato a real Campionato without a cracking encounter with our southern neighbors? Despite only playing our third tournament, it will be the fourth confrontation with the side considered our closest rival, both in the geographical and the proverbial sense. If both sides live up to the obligated expectations carried by their rank, this could be a dead rubber. But it will be about so much more than three points in Kitchener Stadium as the two last losing CE finalists clash heads. In the CE 33, in West Park, the Rekans imposed their dominance with a demonstration and a resounding 2-0 win.

Two years ago, the draw turned up the same cards with a duel across the border on the final match day of the group stage. The Whalers could have eliminated the pre-tournament favorites but after a deflated first half, they were lucky to draw via a Danny Clark beauty. But the rivals met again in the quarters, a game often considered the greatest of the 76 interlands so far for Cap Nord. The result of West Park got reversed in dashing style and Capnordic confidence grew a few inches. Beating the rival you look up to is one thing: imposing your dominance over them is another. Whatever the results before or after may be, this fixture will have a lasting impact on the Whalers, their tournament and their future.

can you solve this fun word search and figure out why the situation is so dire for the soccer Elephants?
After finding all 12 words, you can bring them in order using word count (and their scrabble scores):

3, 6
4, 6
8, 11
3, 3
8, 14
7, 8
7, 13
6, 10
3, 4
5, 5
8, 12
7, 8 (and ends in a D)

good luck!

Nickname: Black Butterflies

Soccer (known as hateball in Hannasea because of how much we hate it) is an all-female sport. It is not played at a high level and players are a step below full international level; the national team has won three games in their history and somehow fumbled their way to the knockouts in CE32 in what was widely assumed to be a work of performance art. The team is not very physically strong but have been working to improve fitness and reduce sloppy errors. New players are in italics.

Coach: Kate Grant
Kate has been the successful manager of Pearl City Rovers in the Federation Hateball League and hopes to bring bold technical innovations trialled there such as a 4-3-3 formation, emphasis on quick passing, and not losing every single game, to the national team job.

Squad

GK Natasha Green Image Dynamo
Captain. Goalkeeper Natasha isn't the tallest (Hannasean women are notoriously short) but she has good reflexes and is quite skilled with the ball at her feet. Will her ability in possession make up for her aerial deficits? Spoiler: no. She is now the captain. Reserves: Jessie Cameron, Georgia Walker.

LB Gianna Espinoza Image Olympic Mayswick
Both Gianna and Karissa are new call-ups, replacing veterans Rachel Barrett and Lexi Holmes. Gianna is the better technician of the two, an elegant wing-back; Karissa is a bit scrappier and more willing to throw in the needed tackle. Reserve: Karissa James.

CB Karina Wilkinson Image Star of Confederation
The tough tackling Karina has a high work rate and will give everything for the team at both ends. She’s not especially big for a center back and makes up for it with a bit of tactical roughness. She was captain at the last CE but has abandoned the armband after their disappointing peformance. Reserves: Keira Murray, Maddison Dry, Freya Johnson, Natasha Price.

CB Victoria Pearce Image Springriden
Victoria is the biggest player on the team, unusually tall for a Hannasean woman and possessing a stocky build. Perhaps she has a little Brenecian in her. She's not exceptional on the ball but she's the physical lynchpin of the defence.

RB Meaghan Earls Image Esna
Brittany Horton was the first Hannasean player to ever sign overseas, but her age has robbed her of some of her pace and so Meaghan will get a chance to start. She's fast and can cross the ball powerfully, but not exceptionally tough on defence. Reserve: Brittany Horton.

HM Chelsea Crawford Image Barossia United
Chelsea is a busy playmaker who anchors the midfield in the new system. She's a little undersized to be providing much defensive cover but she's very good on the ball, and quite tough. Reserve: Hayley Dines.

LCM Katie Thomas Image Olympic Mayswick
Katie is, by Hannasean standards, a good all-round midfielder who plays in a central role for Olympic but will fill in the most versatile, box-to-box role of the three central midfielders in this formation, breaking up plays with tackling and distributing the ball forward. As one of the tallest players on a very short team, a perennial target at set pieces. Reserve: Amara Wallace.

RCM Annabella Rose Image Hillsmouth
An intelligent playmaker who has to take on the role Maya Davidson once held of stringing the attacks together, Annabella is fast and has a good quality shot, but none of her forebear's abilities from set pieces. Reserve: Lily-Mae Murray.

LW Mikayla Ross Image Pearl Angelwood Wanderers
Mikayla is an intelligent passer and has good football IQ but is quite small and can get bullied off the ball. Breakaway pace but not so good at turning at speed. Her backup, Aisha, is the first black Black Butterfly. Reserve: Aisha Connell.

RW Emma Terrell Image Springriden
A determined and intelligent player, albeit one without the kind of pace needed to regularly beat defenders. Very accurate at passing and crossing. Never shirks from a tackle despite her mousy physique. Would run through a wall for her teammates. Reserve: Sarah Williamson.

ST Remi Gray Image Butterfly City
Short for a striker (yes, we get it already). She has great ball control and can withstand the physical side a bit better than some of her teammates. She's an excellent finisher. But she's young and untested, and this is her first time taking on Esportiva's biggest powers. Reserves: Anya Edwards, Brooke Read, Mackenzie Gray.

ANAC’S SENTIENTS “UP FOR THE TASK” AHEAD OF HOME CAMPIONATO

CHAMBERLEY, SYLESTONE - In the wake of unarguably the most successful year of football in Sylestonean history which ultimately resulted in the nation’s inaugural playoff berth and the nomination of Mytanar coach Mojmir Anac for International Manager of the Year, the Sentients now face the brand new task of performing in front of a home crowd, where expectations are running high as a kite. Despite their measly rank as thirteenth in Esportiva and 107th throughout the entire multiverse, Anac’s group of workhorses have shown every single football fan from every single football nation that they should be treated as far sturdier opponents than that, having only taken a single cycle to achieve those heights. Thus far, only the big names of Tumbra, Huayramarca, Eura, Jeruselem and New Gelderland have found a way to score more goals than the Sentients inside 31 official matches inside ninety minutes over the past twelve months. Under Anac’s regime, sixteen of those matches have resulted in victory - not including an astonishing penalty shootout triumph over Brenecia - with the experiment to mix humans and Sentients in a professional sporting time for the inaugural time paying its utmost dividends. Having only conceded a awe-inspiring nine goals over the course of 22 World Cup Qualifiers, the resolute Sylestonean back four have shown remarkable determination and skill and the offensive unit isn’t much worse, as shown when they hit Macbon for eight to secure progression to the Campionato Esportiva 34 round of 16 in the team’s fifth official match back in their colours.

And now, with the passing of a successful bid allowing the nation to host their very first regional football tournament, expectations have never been higher. Not even when Sylestone was ranked around the 60th mark for years before football’s hiatus across the nation did the country’s fans ever feel so upbeat about their chances in the relatively near future, on the back of their deepest run in the Campionato Esportiva last season and their first-ever qualification for the World Cup playoffs, before rejecting an invite to the Cup of Harmony due to Anac’s lack of willingness to tire his players out ahead of a home Campionato.

Sure, while it may be looking all bright and rosy, there are some concerns leading into the Sentients’ opening day match against Gouvanarch. Although Anac has appealed to the Sylestonean public by stating rather bluntly that his intentions are to hold the trophy aloft by the tournament’s conclusion, it’s been two months since that fateful playoff against Huayramarca that saw the Sentients go down 8-4 on aggregate, nearly conceding as many goals against an ultra-aggressive outfit in 180 minutes as they did throughout the remainder of their World Cup Qualifying campaign. That, compounded by the fact that captain Hugo Mornington will only be available come matchday two as he still sits out his suspension, means that that opening fixture with Gouvanarch may prove to be so much more important.

Sure, Gouvanarch may not necessarily be a difficult start to the tournament by any stretch of the imagination, especially considering the 4-1 thumping the Sentients handed them last Campionato Esportiva, but Anac has already cut down on reports indicating it should be an easy win. “They have the ability, the tenacity. They have nothing to lose, and they will be out to cause an upset in front of a hundred thousand. We cannot afford to be neglectful of the threat they pose, particularly with Hugo [Mornington] out. We’ve got to focus on one game at a time, for each team certainly has the ability to take us down. I know I’ve already spoken of our intention to take this all the way - I have no doubt we can do it - but it’s about breaking down the task into little pieces. When you buy a jigsaw puzzle second-hand, you don’t just take the ten or so larger pieces the previous owners have separated it into and complete that, you break it into pieces and do them one at a time. That’s how we must approach this challenge.”

But when Anac was questioned about the possibility of home pressure and the expectation to perform, the 39-year-old was nothing but dismissive. “We’ve worked hard, so hard, over the past year to reach this level and we know we’re up for it. It’s about using that home crowd energy to spur us onward and upward. Each of them know their potential and what they need to do, and they know what I need from them. There’s only pressure where you create it and if you don’t create it, then what’s the problem?

“I think that’s what got to the group when we came up against Huayramarca. To get that close against the odds, I’m not sure we were quite mentally prepared for that first leg here in Chamberley, and we saw that in Hugo when he was sent off. We recovered for the second game, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough. Now we’ve received the opportunity to experience that, though, I’m confident we’ll be well equipped and I trust the players to not let it get to them again.”

After Gouvanarch, the road forward does appear significantly more difficult, though. Irithoren are an unknown force in the footballing world, making their debut this cycle and after the Sentients’ performance last season, treating them with respect and caution will be pivotal. Too many times have developed football teams opted against treating a struggling or unknown team seriously, and too many times have they paid the price. Following Irithoren, the Sentients have a couple of tough matches to push through, with the eighth-ranked Hannasea and Lozhoans standing in their way on matchdays three and four. On paper, these two teams are the two who are most likely to prevail over the hosts and ten months ago, it was Lozho who did just that, with a 3-0 triumph in Protchen wrapping up the Esportivan Derby Series. Sure, Sylestone are undoubtedly a more well-trained and polished team than they were back then, but the Pelicans still have the ability to go out and emerge as the better of the two teams after ninety minutes when the Sentients face them in Marbury on matchday four. As another team coming off a strong qualification campaign, the Lozhoans will certainly be raring to go, with many active supporters having already landed in Chamberley ahead of their matchday one game with Hannasea that will certainly test their limits.

And then, come matchday five, the true wild card will emerge. Dod Rava may only be ranked 33rd in the region having only recorded one victory in South Newlandia - a 3-2 over Drehda - but that doesn’t mean they won’t pose a threat. Alongside the likes of Irithoren, it’s these kinds of teams that established nations have made an absolute meal of in the past, treating them as given wins and experimenting perhaps a little too much. Sure, victory should arise if the Sentients can perform close to their best but anything less, and the door is ajar.

It may not have the likes of Tumbra, Brenecia or Cap Nord, but Group A is no easy group - none are. On paper, Lozho and Hannasea are shaping up to be the games with the potential to make or break the Sentients, but aside from that, the remaining fixtures with Gouvanarch, Irithoren and Dod Rava are just as important - if Anac and his players cannot find a way past them, then the results against the more established forces in the region are not likely to matter.

Form, as well as home advantage, is on the Sentients’ side. The results can be obtained, and a deep run is in the making. The rest is on the players to prove their tenacity, their ferocity, their determination. If they can do that, then what’s stopping them from going all the way?
