SYLESTONE BID FOR CAMPIONATO ESPORTIVA 35

IC Overview

Sylestone is an equatorial island nation located in the far west of Esportiva and, located between Cyborg Holland and Acadiana. It is home to world-class diversity, with biomes ranging from the hot, dry desert to the moist, humid rainforests. Roughly 30 million sapient inhabitants call Sylestone home, ranging from normal, everyday humans, to sentient objects, wild elves and even a tiny number of anthropomorphic animals. Some of Sylestone’s biggest cities include the capital, Avondale, Chamberley, Betham and Cleorough, but the two that are famous throughout the multiverse are Pesfield and Kirkham - the former as its one million inhabitants live primarily in the treehouses of the Chotan Rainforest and the latter as it is regarded as the “City of Sentients''. The national animal of Sylestone is the Margaret (don’t ask), while the national flower is the hawthorn tree, common in the nation’s grasslands.

Although Sylestone has never hosted a Campionato Esportiva, they have hosted two out of the three editions of EspoT20s, while also successfully playing host to two Cups of Harmony and a Baptism of Fire on the football arena. If selected, this will mark the nation’s first hosting gig. since football’s hiatus across Sylestone, with the public thoroughly excited about the possibility, especially when considering the recent successes of the Sylestonean national team in the previous Campionato Esportiva and World Cup Qualifiers. With a relatively successful domestic league, stadiums throughout the nation are kept in good condition year-round and infrastructure is reliable and of more than acceptable quality.

Hosting Experience

As alluded to above, I’ve hosted a wide variety of sports and competitions in the past, including three WCC-organised events and several cricket tournaments. In addition, I have also hosted a couple of ARWCs, along with a HWC and a WLC in the past.

Possible Formats

We’re currently at 34 signups, with a preference for group sizes of 5-6 nations, and between 40-60% of nations qualifying

  • 36 nations. Six groups of six, with all first- and second-placed teams qualifying for the round of 16 along with the four best third-placed teams.
  • 40 nations. Eight groups of five, with first-placed teams qualifying for the round of 16 and second- and third-placed teams progressing to a playoff round (round of 24).
  • 42 nations. Seven groups of six, with all first-placed teams and the four best second-placed teams qualifying for the round of 16, while the remaining second-placed teams and all third-placed teams participate in a playoff round to whittle the field down to 16.
I don’t expect the field to grow any larger than this, although formats for 45 teams and 48 (!) teams are 9x5 and 8x6 respectively, followed by a playoff round. The 42-team format is very much undesirable but will be used only if no other format works.

Technical Details and OOC

If two teams are even on points at any one stage, the following tiebreakers will be employed.

  • Goal difference
  • Head-to-head results
  • Wins
  • Scorinated match only including RP bonuses, with draws off (IC drawing of lots)
In addition, a lengthy discussion was held by the SFA over whether an additional tiebreaker, goals against, should be employed but after a vote, it was decided that with a 52% majority that a simple drawing of lots should succeed the “wins” tiebreaker to avoid being dunked upon by literally the entire multiverse. In the case that third-placed or second-placed teams or whatever are even on goal difference and wins, the aforementioned scorinated match will be utilised. Before anyone asks, if multiple nations are tied on a tiebreaker, then they will be continued until one or more are ruled out, and then tiebreakers are applied from the beginning.

In addition, a roster penalty will be established. If no roster is posted come matchday one (I intend on a 5-7 day break between the posting of the everything thread and matchday one - sufficient time to at the very least post a list of names with their positions), then 50% of the nation’s rank will be scrubbed off for scorination. If no roster is forthcoming by matchday four, then the remaining 50% will also be scrubbed off for the final 2-3 rounds. RP bonuses will be “generous and favour quality over quantity”, with short, witty, easily-read roleplays with obvious effort being granted a higher bonus than longer ones that show a lack of effort, readability or enjoyment. In essence, just have fun when roleplaying and by the end of the group stage, bonuses will be such that a rostered nation with regular RP should be able to arrive close to the highest rank used come the knockouts.

Matches will be scorinated by the latest version of xkoranate (0.3.3 I think it is), using NSFS formula and additive mods. A host bonus equivalent to no more than one matchday of RP bonus will be applied to the host nation (and may be less, judging on how I see fit).

Here I will also warn everyone that there’s about a 90% chance I will not have access to my laptop and xkoranate between the 16th and 21st of April due to holidays, so there is a very high chance of a week-long break midway through the tournament. As often as possible, there will be 48 hours between cutoffs, though it may have to be increased to 60 or even 72 depending occasionally, although I will do my utmost to ensure that is not the case.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a football host bid so it’s entirely possible that I have forgotten something somewhere. Questions, comments and statements such as “yo this idea is shite change it” are all welcomed. It’s been a while :)

Like the host bid. Just 2 questions for clarity sake:
- How does the host bid resolve 3-way ties? If 1 team has a relative position settled from the other 2 while applying the tiebreakers, how would the tie between the other 2 teams be resolved?
- How would the Knockout Stages bracket be generated? Will the teams be seeded based on their group, or based on ranking of all teams by performance? If it is the latter, then will group stages rematches be avoided, and in which stage?

EDIT: Actually, a third one as well:
- What is the host's opinion on the utilisation of AIs for RPs?

thanks for the questions, I figured I'd forgotten something.

- For the first question, tiebreakers would be re-applied from the top in order to resolve the tiebreak between the remaining teams.
- Knockout brackets will be seeded (ie 1v16, 2v15 and so on), although group stage matchups in the first playoff round (whether it be a round of 24, round of 16 or something else) will be avoided
- As for AI utilisation, I believe I have publicly supported the method in which Tumbra and Chromatika used for the World Cup.
Tumbra wrote:Using images generated by an AI drawing engine, without attribution: X

Copy-pasting an RP spat out by an AI chat engine: X
Editing an RP spat out by an AI chat engine: Grey area. Please avoid this, though we also recognise this is the grey area for which debates will be had. We are more likely than not to give these kinds of RPs a pass, since they have been transformed to some extent by the co-author of the RP.
Writing a wholly original RP off a prompt generated by a hypothetical AI:

Any roleplays of which I suspect of plagiarism will be run through a plagiarism checker as well as an AI checker (yes, they seem to exist). Generally, if large swathes of an RP are edited then I will give it a pass, but the changing of names and little minor information I'm probably going to be more strict upon. I will keep any incidents of plagiarism strictly anonymous, although I will inform people about it's occurrence. The extent of the plagiarism will decide the penalty - if it's just something like not attributing AI-generated images I will likely provide a personal warning to the user and dock RP bonus from just that specific RP that will become more extensive if they do not adhere to the rules outlined, but straight copy-pastes with only very minimal transformation will result in a straight rank and bonus reset.

In essence, just write your own work. It saves me a lot of effort and saves you from risking forfeiting all RP bonus. All personal work is better than plagiarised work.

In addition, I thought I'd just clarify that all matches involving Sylestone will be scorinated by a third party.

With 37 nations having signed up, I am making the executive decision to cut Ha'Yarok in order to reach a workable number of participants and hence signups are closed. Everything thread to be up shortly, with matchday one in almost exactly a week's time from this point.
