As the title was still up in the air, both of the games involving contenders were played simultaneously on the final day. In the best position, with a commanding goal difference lead, were the defending champions Chongjibo, who were paired with fifth-place Aierlanren at the Sha Dadao. Nongmin, who were level on points with the Shockwaves but trailing on the goal difference tiebreaker, were hosting all-but-mathematically-eliminated-from-contention Fuchou, in Chumeichang. For most of the first half, both matches were dour affairs, as no party looked very keen on making an error. Ultimately, it was the team who had no chance at all of winning the title who wrote their names on the score sheet first; the Irish took a one nil lead into half time thanks to Chen Ling. Nongmin, who were allegedly told by manager Chun Lin not to check their phones for scores at half time, may or may not have known that they were in first place in the live table, but they certainly played like a team with self belief when they emerged from the tunnel for the second period, as they build a marvelous passing move to set up Player of the Season candidate Iomelda van Hoogstraaten for a one-on-one with the Fuchou right center back. The Tikariotian won the battle, and slotted a shot under the outstretched leg of Jaromír Janoušek to give the Farmers a three-point lead in the live table. Over in Qiawutian, the home fans began to hear word that they were participating in a dethroning, and the mood became elated. But in the 65th minute, one of the Gold and White center backs made an error in possession, and as cheap as the goal was, Cheuk Yan Tsang lashed his chance off the far post and into the back of the net to give the Shockwaves a chance. Eight minutes later, back in Chumeichang, Nongmin somehow sensed that the tide could be turning in the other match, and turned the screw. The oft-vaunted Avengers defenders handled the pressure poorly, and van Hoogstraaten's run to the byline stretched their back line sufficiently that her cut back into traffic was finished easily to make it Nongmin 2, Fuchou 0. With twenty minutes to go, the Silver and Red were still heading towards an amazing first-ever title.

But in the 85th minute, Chongjibo refused to go down so easily. Following a brief scare when Lu Fang Huang's pass to a center back dangled a bit too close to Chen Ling (the Pink and Black keeper recovered in time to smother Ling's weak shot, however), the Shockwaves began to construct a move. Korchagin's cut inside into space offered him a significant chunk of empty real estate as Mei Ying Chang had vacated her space in the center of the park, dragging a marker with her. Korchagin found Kian Zhi Yuan, and Yuan was able to swivel around the Irish midfielder pressuring him. As Chang offered him a dummy run crossing in front of him to his left, Yuan instead stepped into the space behind her to his right. Offered the shot, he instead penetrated into the channel he saw ahead of him. Pushed much too wide to shoot by a well-recovering Aierlanren defender, Yuan looked back towards the top of the D for an option. Korchagin was there, making a risky and desperate run into the area. Yuan's pass went to Korchagin's feet... Or did it?! Korchagin instead let the ball roll into a half yard of space right in front of goal, about fifteen yards out. The goalscorer Tsang needed to do something original and brilliant to find the space to shoot.

And somehow, he did. The Chongjibo number nine, who played for Aierlanren's hated archrivals Baomao last season, let the pass roll past his plant leg but whipped his other leg around to knock the ball back towards goal at a ninety degree angle. The extravagant first touch put him in space! Opening up his body onto his left foot, Tsang slotted a finessed shot down to the Irish keeper's right, and watched as it rolled into the back of the net.

The Chongjibo bench cleared as the number nine sprinted to the corner flag in front of an apathetic Sha Dadao crowd (aside from a small gathering of pink-clad away fans going absolutely buttfuck in the far corner of the arena). Chongjibo, who spent a fraction of the year in first place, were resisted in the title race far, far more fiercely this season than either Season 1 or Season 2. But that little moment of skill, with five minutes of regular time left, ensured that pink ribbons were to stay on the League of the Two Sapphires trophy. At the Huangse Migong, as Nongmin coasted to a pyrrhic victory, the bad news spread. Both sets of players, clad in silver and burgundy alike, collapsed on the pitch in tears at the sound of the final whistle.

On the sideline at the Sha Dadao, Dragomir Lazic smiled as his players wept in joy, hugging one another and waving to the away crowd. The crowd sang back to their new club legend: "Oh Mr. Lazic, you are the love of my life, oh Mr. Lazic, I'd let you shag my wife, oh Mr. Lazic, such a sexy accent..."

A wet Sunday afternoon in Qiawutian gave us a fascinating tactical battle between one manager, the defensive taskmaster Lian Wei Chew, and another, the famously progressive possession fiend Chun Hsia Teoh. Unfortunately for fans of the latter style, the referee was so lenient that very few fouls were called at all, and that suited the hard-tackling Avengers. Only three minutes in, You Liang Mok's first-time square ball at the top of the penalty area was smashed home by a burgundy-clad midfielder, and Qiji struggled for the whole first half to respond. Fuchou doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second period as Mok again provided the needed service for the goal-scorer (Jen Ta Jin, in this case). In the hole two times over, the Purple and White just never broke the game open the way they sometimes are able to with their inverted wing backs and midfield overloads. For Fuchou, whose late-season winning streak came to a screeching halt as they lost to Chongjibo and Nongmin in the penultimate and ultimate games of the league season respectively, the trophy lift was a pleasant consolation. For the well-run and popular Qiawutian club, the achievement of winning the club's first-ever bit of silverware was a proud moment.

The closing ceremony came with a quite interesting bit of news about the Zhen Li Jiang Cup: next season, the Casaran phase will be eliminated. All teams in the league will be thrust immediately into a pure knockout, with all but the final being a two-legged contest. It'll be a relief to the big clubs, who had been issuing complaints about the format that seemed to let an unusually high number of lower-division outfits into the quarterfinals, and for purists, who feel that the format is a gimmick.

SEASON 3 AWARDS

It was perhaps the most exciting year of the young Naixese top flight ever... though perhaps that's the first-ever proper title race talking. In general, it's definitely the case that many clubs are cultivating an on-and-off-pitch identity and building strong relationships with supporters firms, and that makes domestic football in our country feel like it is growing. But as much as we all agree that the development of clubs is practically seductive, the performances of individual players must also be studied. The successes of Naixi's best teams cannot be attributed solely to the tactical wisdom of managers or gate receipts totals generated by fans. So which players deserve special mention? Well, the League of the Two Sapphires has, for the first time, concentrated efforts on collecting statistics from matches more accurately and thoroughly. These data are being fed into some sort of suspicious supercomputer - one of those ones the size of a whole room and requires a truck-sized AC unit - which is telling us which players performed the best and assigning them a score referred to as the Statistic of Hardiness, Intelligence, and Technique, or SHIT. SEASON 4 PREVIEW

It feels like it's been forever, but perhaps that's just the chilly winter we've had! Three seasons of top notch top flight football in Naixi are history, and we can now begin to take stock of domestic football in our splendid, increasingly racially pure nation. First and foremost - Chongjibo. They're the untouchable juggernaut, there's no doubt there. But last season gave us glimpses of a potential different future... Fuchou and Nongmin harried the Shockwaves all the way to the finish line. Then there's the offseason. The departure of Kian Zhi Yuan will really sting for the Pink and Black. Can the champions weather the storm and make it four in a row? Further down, talented pursuers like Qiji, Aierlanren, and Sheshou all fancy a go at international competition, though only the former club - the Wizards - have had a bite at that apple so far. Finally, down at the bottom, we waved goodbye to the two newly-promoted clubs (Xiniu and Qi'e) once again, as they both went straight back down. But the expansion of the League of the Two Sapphires to twelve teams - planned for a couple years now but finally going through - will guarantee that won't happen following Season 4. Four promoted teams join Naixi's premier footballing competition: Shenmi, Shuqin, Yinying, and Wenzi. At least two will be around in Season 5, so get to know them!

SEASON 4 PREVIEW

Well, everybody, we've got good news for the purists. The Casaran phase of the Zhen Li Jiang Cup has officially been abolished, and without much protest by the nation's biggest and most prestigious clubs. Though the structure of the Casaran should have resulted in some enticing matchups between the various powerhouses of the sport, it too often punished sides from the League of the Two Sapphires for one away draw and too often rewarded lower division teams for luck in the repeating draws. Now, will we see a total end to the chaos now that the Cup is a simple knockout? Hardly. There has still been a master draw (the results of which are below), but at least now nobody is getting dumped out after four games and replaced by a team that the FA of Naixi can't locate a crest for.

Oh, wait. Well, some teams will, of course. Now that we think about it, we still might see big teams dumped out early. I guess we forgot what the justification for this change was.

Every round but the final will be conducted over two legs (just like the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the previous format), and away goals will continued to be eschewed as too many clubs still share the major stadia in the Two Sapphires. A reminder that teams listed first in the tie will play the first leg at home.
