I'm new to NSS, what is a "style modifier" and how do I determine it?

A style modifier is used to describe how aggressively or conservatively your team plays. A team with a positive style modifier will tend to be involved in higher scoring games than a team with a negative style modifier. You can include your style modifier in your roster.

I have neglected to include a guide about RP permissions and style modifiers in the thread OP, which I will add now.

Quick question, Squorn: What happened with points from tonight's scores by any chance?

I see that we have draws on MD1 scores, even though the bid runs on 3-2-1-0 with overtime/shootout. Just making sure - this was also asked via NS Sport server.

You're right. "Allow draws" was accidentally left on. Since I am uncertain of the effect his may have had beyond the obvious, the entire first matchday will be rescored. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Mildly miffed that that has turned a 3-0 win into a 4-5 defeat even though it had absolutely no bearing on that game. I don't see why the affected games couldn't just have been rescorinated, but w/e.

I realize several people had unpleasant result reversals that now seem unnecessary. At the time though, I was not certain to what extent other results may or may not have been affected, and a full rescore seemed the safest course to ensure that all effects of my mistake were corrected. It may have been wiser in retrospect to have temporarily removed the scores and taken more time to consider a course of action, something I will bear in mind in the future.

welp, between the rescore, the recent game, having the third-lowest goal differential, having a defensive style modifier, and being matched with some of the best teams in the cup, it seems I have already lost. maybe I can find time to do roleplay soon.

There are still matches left to play so you might not end last in your group after all. Just because you lost (and it just so happen it was me), you shouldn't just throw the towel and calls it quit.

I admit that I don't make the best RP's and I am doing this just for fun. I work a 9 to 5 work every weekday so my free time is quite limited. I also guess that the other users here also RPs in their free time from either school or work. I am not hosting and I am not taking a guess on how many users are writing RPs, but my educated guess is at least more than half or less. So who knows, maybe a RP that your wrote ends up tipping the scales when the host scoriates the next round and a match of yours ends up a Miracle on Ice.

I wouldn't worry that much about it. Sure things look bleak now but with some top-notch RPing you should hopefully stand more of a chance. Hell, there's a possibility you'll pull off a shock win. And remember you don't have to RP the match in question but rather you can pretty much RP about anything, the only real limits are your imagination and the forum rules. Just don't get discouraged, mate, and when you have the time see if you can put something out.

If things look bad now, remember that you will get ranked after this. Which means that, if you take part in the next one, then not only will your team be somewhat stronger, especially if you've got what I like to call a "one-and-done" team* in your group, but you'll have more of a chance of making it out of the group stage.

*So-called because they show up for the one competition, probably don't even post a roster or an RP and then disappear almost immediately afterwards.

Following the example of other currently ongoing tournaments, I have reconsidered the scorination schedule as originally planned.

In order to reduce burnout and allow for holiday travel, the scorinations originally scheduled for 12/22 and 12/24 will be postponed, and the tournament will resume with Group Stage matchday 6 on 12/28.

Just giving a quick update on behalf of SRS, who asked me to relay this due to him being swarmed with work:

The upcoming matchday cutoff will be happening on the night of the 30th [around 56 hours], not tonight.

This change was made and appropriately announced on the NS Sport discord server a couple of hours ago, due to a possible RP lag with non-Discord users as the gameside was only restored yesterday.

I echo the sentiment about the new users. It's been great reading everyone's contributions so far, and I hope that you will all stick around for many more editions.

On a more official note:

I have not yet announced the format for the bracket apart from in a fairly silly fashion in my RP posted moments ago.

The bracket draw will be a fairly standard seeded draw with one stipulation: 1st seed playing 32nd, 2nd, playing 31st and so on. The stipulation is this: seeds 1-7 will be the group winners, seeds 8-14 will be the second-place teams, seeds 15-21 will be the third-place teams, seeds 22-28 will be the fourth place teams, and seeds 29-32 will be the four fifth-place teams who advance. My objective with this format is to avoid excessively unbalanced halves of the bracket. This format will almost certainly lead to group stage rematches in the Round of 32, but a rematch was nearly statistically guaranteed to happen at least once by the round of 16 anyway.
