46TH WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY
Britonisea • Darkmania • Kalmarlund • Mercedini • Strayan Rus
EVERYTHING THREAD

The Mercedinian Hockey Federation, in conjunction with the Novapax Sports Board, is proud to present the 46th World Cup of Hockey. Over the next three weeks, the best of the best in the sport of Ice Hockey will face-off to make history and crown the newest World Cup of Hockey champions. The tournament graces the region of Novapax for the first time, with a quintet of nations hosting matches across the region. After a four-matchday group stage, the best sixteen teams fly to Mercedini for the knockout stage, where only one will be left standing once the dust has settled.

If you are one of the fifty participating nations you can start posting your rosters and RPs following the host information. Any OOC queries or discussion can be found using this link.

Format
This tournament will be using the SQIS Modified Formula with additive style modifiers. Draws will be allowed for the course of group stage, with knockout round games going through overtime and shootouts if required. Style Modifiers will range from -5 to +5. RP bonuses will be generous and cumulative throughout the tournament, with a slight emphasis on tournament relevance and a large focus of quality over quantity. While this may slightly help users posting content related to the tournament, users should not be discouraged from posting original content about other events that may interest them. A one-time roster bonus is also on offer and can be claimed at any point in the tournament.

This 50-team tournament will consist of an initial single-round robin phase, with all group winners and the best six runners-up (based on group record) moving on to the Round of 16.

46TH WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY
Britonisea • Darkmania • Kalmarlund • Mercedini • Strayan Rus
HOST INFORMATION

Mercedini

Mercedini is a large and well-connected island nation located in the South Novapax Ocean in the region of Novapax. It's borders consist of one large landmass (Greater Mercedini) as well as a plethora of small landmasses and archipelagos located to the east, almost half hold and sustain populations (the most notable being Exton, Darlaston and the Kingfisher Islands)

The climate of Mercedini is extremely varied and depends on where you are situated. In the south of the nation (including the major cities of Zoloroni and Langtree), the climate is warm with the average temperature reaching 20°C with warm winds originating from the Dovani peninsula (which the city looks into). Moving further inland and towards the central cities of Orga & Acoflosa, temperatures reach approximately 10°C with summers being warmer and winters barely reaching above zero. Finally, the northern cities of Hoventon & Shebchetsik are the coldest parts of the nation, with temperatures averaging around 5°C with winters rarely exceeding zero. Shebchetsik, the nation's northernmost city, rarely reaches above zero on average, with summers being between 5-10°C on average.

Mercedini is a very accessible and is the main route into the region of Novapax should you want to visit or stay anywhere else, all metropolitan cities (Zoloroni, Langtree, Orga & Acoflosa) all have large scale, big capacity airports with accompanying transport hubs, which means teams and fans can get around the country with ease via Mercedini's extensive transport network.

Mercedini has two national languages and both are universally spoken in the nation as children are taught both at a young age. Mercedinian is the native language of all citizens and is based around the Italian language, knowing the language isn't paramount to a tourist's experience but Mercedinians always appreciate a foreigner attempting to communicate in the Mercedinian language.

Mercedini's national currency is the Yvroni (¥) and is used universally for the nation's transactions. Currently, the Yvroni is a strong and reliable currency with 1.56 NationStates Dollars equalling 1 Yvroni (¥0.64 = 1 NS$).

KNOCKOUTS

ZOLORONI - MRC.CUBE (18,000)

The main indoor arena in Zoloroni Sports City, the MRC.CUBE will host the tournaments, centre-piece match, including some of the knockout round matches along the way. It has been the home of the Kingfishers (Mercedini’s National Team) in the past, with the MRC.CUBE the starting point of many deep runs in the tournament. Outside of hockey, it has hosted many indoor sporting tournaments plus the Junior World Hit Festival and four editions of SongSearch. Located just outside the metropolis of Zoloroni, its bubble-like facade can glow in the colours of any nation playing within its four walls.

LANGTREE - Sebangchek Arena (7,000)

Making its second appearance at an international tournament is the Sebangchek Arena in Langtree. This time, it’s hosting the sport it was actually built for, following its repurposing for the Independents' Cup. Located towards the outskirts of the city, the surrounding scenery has been cleaned up for the tournament, with the outer facade improved in time for the tournament. It usually holds AHC Langtree in the MSL, but will be the place where memories are made in the early knockout rounds.

SHEBCHETSIK - Shebnatsiya Ice Palace (19,000)

Mercedini’s home for the past couple of WCOH Group Stages, and now the largest Mercedinian venue at this tournament. In the far north of Mercedini, you might need to pack a jacket or two if your team ends up playing in the Ice Palace. Its clean-white appearance makes it look like an Apple mouse from some angles, but its grand interior will make for quite the atmosphere when the puck is on the ice. The Ice Palace will be hosting the third-place play-off plus a couple of early knockout rounds, you don’t want to miss it when your team plays here.

ELSPA - Stadi Senni Stromboli (15,000)

It’s the only stadium purposefully built for the tournament, with the Stadi Stromboli the new home of a new team making their debut in the nation’s second hockey-tier next season. Located on the south-east coast, about an hour from Zoloroni, Elspa is the metropolitan’s dream when looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the capital. Elspachia FC placed this small city on the map, and now they will be making their first appearance at an international sporting tournament. Make sure to visit the many parks which line the streets of Elspa, since it is a city which is beginning to expand and become a regional hub of it’s own

GROUP A - Acoflosa & Orga

Mercedini (6)
Vilita and Turori (26)
Canadian Dominion (45)
Kimi-Suomi (UR)
Depivik (UR)

ACOFLOSA - VolareMercedini Park (7,500)

VolareMercedini Park has been the setting of some fairytale stories in the past, especially when it comes to domestic ice hockey. Their tenants, Acoflosa Penguins, stunned the nation when they won their first MSL title against all odds. Since then, funds gathered from that triumph plus their HCL run in the following season has seen them expand their surroundings. The 7,500-capacity arena boasts two-tiers and plenty of adoring hockey fans in the city of Acoflosa, it’s one place where ice hockey has unsurprisingly taken off. As the main hub of Mercedini’s MetroBullet transit system, it’s central position in the nation means you can get to pretty much anywhere in only a couple of hours.

ORGA - Connexion Stadium (10,000)

The industrial town of Orga was an expected fixture when it comes to hosting international events. It has hosted the Baptism of Fire previously, and now welcomes ice hockey’s premier tournament. While the first impressions may be bleak, citizens of Orga know how to have a good time and have done a great job in converting the old factories into attractive working and living environments. Orga HC are the local side and the tenants of the Connexion Stadium, and the locals love it when you show some support to their local side.

GROUP B - Exton & West Zoloroni

The Cordian Isles (8)
Cassadaigua (23)
Patriotlandia (41)
Juvencus (UR)
Independent Athletes from Quebec (UR)

EXTON - Island Arena (6,000)

It’s off to the Mercedinian tropics in Group B, with Exton one of the unlikely successful applicants to host World Cup of Hockey matches. Home to the Exton Islanders, the Island Arena looks out into the Dovani Peninsula, where the clear and still water stretches out as far as the eye can see. While still being part of Mercedini, Exton’s climate is mostly different from the mainland. A cool sea breeze and humid sun rays permeate through the island. The climate control of the Island Arena will make fans feel right at home, with 6,000 seats likely to be filled by passionate fans and enthusiastic locals.

WEST ZOLORONI - Blue Strike Hockey Centre (4,800)

Whenever there is a Mercedinian sporting endeavour, you’ll just know that Blue Strike will not be far away. The Mercedinian Energy Drink manufacturer have their thumb in yet another proverbial pie, with their hockey stadium now hosting international matches. While it is the smallest location hosting matches in Mercedini, it sits in the large Blue Strike sporting complex which features the home stadium for their football team, plus training pitches and recreational greens littered around the complex. Restaurants and bars aren’t too far away either, so you can see your team in action and then enjoy an evening meal after a short stroll.

Britonisea

The United Republic of Britonisea is a relatively large nation located in the north Novapax, sharing a continent with the rest of the ABEN Union and other nations, including fellow host nation, Wazekia which it borders to the south of the city. The nation boasts over 62 million within its borders, with multiple urban areas over 2 million people. Britonisea has a very varied topography, especially down the spine of the country as mountains higher than 5,000 metres split the country right down its centre. The western half of the country includes large metropolitan areas including Kyvivre, Alshkan and WCOH host, the capital city of Doportedas. These areas tend to be warmer than the eastern half of the country, which receives weather systems from the Northern Ocean Centurium leading to cooler temperatures and wetter weather. Generally, the further north you go, the average temperature dips, with Burgendore and Loueske (the northernmost Britonish host cities) barely reaching an average of 13C at this time of year.

Britonisea is a popular Novapax destination and tourists will not struggle to find an airport close to the city or town they are heading to. The nation has a fantastic, relatively cheap national railway (and eco-efficient!) system which tourists and fans of the WCOH can use to their advantage when travelling from one city to the other. The country is very welcoming and loves every chance it has to welcome more people from abroad to learn about Britonish culture. English is the most spoken language in the country, with Britonish being widespread and can be found on billboards and road signs throughout the country. French is the third largest spoken language and is mostly spoken in the Northern and Eastern cities such as Eaux (which one can probably tell from the name) and Telm City – Britonisea’s second largest city.
The Brito Pound Sterling (BPS) has an exchange rate of $1.64 NSD = £1.00 BPS.

GROUP C - Doportedas & Burgendore

Græntfjall (3)
Banija (24)
Atheara (33)
Khardsland (UR)
Britonisea (UR)

DOPORTEDAS - Arena De Banqués (15,000)

Located in the capital of the country, Arena De Banqués is the third largest arena in Doportedas with the arena being able to provide seats for 15,000 people at the World Cup of Hockey. Doportedas, being the most populous city in the country with over six million people residing there, prides itself on its fabulous transportation network including its metro system (uncompleted), which has 297 tube stations - with more stations expected to open very soon. Arena De Banqués is located in the lively western neighbourhood of Mountbatten, which fans arriving from either Aeroporte International or Olympia Airport can access via the Circle Line as well other routes from a wide range of locations in Doportedas using Bromedam, Southwestern and Charles lines.

BURGENDORE - The VEFEKOM Burgen Arena (16,000)

Burgendore is the 13th largest city in Britonisea by metro area and is the only arena that is located off the Britonish mainland - Ghiezland, a relatively large island to the northeast of the country - bordering Nightom. Sponsored by the largest telecommunications company in Britonisea, the VEFEKOM Burgen Arena receives a lot of attention throughout the year and while not the biggest city in Ghiezland, it receives one of the highest number of ticket sales throughout the year and is widely understood to be the gateway to the music scene in Ghiezland. The arena also hosted the 43rd World Hit Festival. The arena is the most northeastern Britonish arena part of the hosting of the World Cup of Hockey 46.

GROUP D - Loueske & Eaux City

Trolleborg (14)
TJUN-ia (15)
StrayaRoos (36)
Dod Rava (UR)
Arreba (UR)

LOUESKE - Loueske Arena (13,500)

Out of all of the locations from Britonisea, Loueske is the only one that is not a city, with those who will be jetting to Loueske will experience a much more chilled and calm side of Britonisea, in complete contrast to the other Britonish WCOH locations. Loueske is in amongst the Britonish mountains, with the town receiving most of its interest from Britons and Novapaxians wanting to go for a ski, with Loueske’s altitude and weather patterns making it one of the best spots in the country for it. As autumn takes hold of Britonisea, Loueske will provide a scenic backdrop for the event.

EAUX CITY - Ice Hall (17,500)

Eaux is the sixth largest city in Britonisea, located in the northeast of the country. Eaux, similarly to its southern counterpart (Tonesk) is known for its multiple motorways which start at Eaux but lead to all corners of the country. Eaux will be providing the largest Britonish arena at the World Cup of Hockey with over 17,000 people able to fit in the arena. The Ice Hall is the only arena in the country which was made with ice sports, such as Ice Hockey, in mind with its name coming from this fact. The Ice Hall has had a wide breadth of experience, however, including multiple different music events and conventions.

Strayan Rus

The Confederacy of Strayan Rus is a huge, efficient nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, absence of drug laws, and spontaneously combusting cars. The hard-working, democratic population of 810 million Strayan Rusians live in a state of perpetual fear, as a complete breakdown of social order has led to the rise of order through biker gangs. The minute, liberal, pro-business, outspoken government, or what there is of one, prioritizes Defense, with Industry, Welfare, and Education also on the agenda, while International Aid and Spirituality receive no funds. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Blidyy. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 5.8%.

The very strong Strayan Rusian economy, worth 43.3 trillion Strayan Dollars a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is fairly diversified and led by the Automobile Manufacturing industry, with major contributions from Retail, Uranium Mining, and Information Technology. Average income is 53,398 Strayan Dollars, but there is an enormous disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 293,296 per year while the poor average 4,941, a ratio of 59.4 to 1. Internet searches for the inventor of the three-wheeled steam-powered Strayan Rusian weed picker are way up, bizarre-looking creatures called 'Emudogs' dominate wildlife preserves, new urban roads are threatening city parks, and the art of conversation has been rediscovered. Crime, especially youth-related, is a major problem, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Strayan Rus's national animal is the Emu, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

GROUP E - Blidyy

Nova Anglicana (10)
Eshialand (18)
Strayan Rus (76)
Lorenthia (76)
Independent Scottish Republics (UR)

BLIDYY - Arena Blidyy (10,000)

The National Indoor Arena of Strayan Rus. With 10,000 seats, it is located in Central Blidyy. The city is one of only two locations to host multiple venues in the Group Stage, showing the sheer enthusiasm of the Blidyy Council to host this tournament in their city. Strayan Rus isn’t known for it’s hockey, however since it’s debut on the international stage, the nation has invested heavily in it’s sporting infrastructure leading to it’s successful bid to be part of the Novapax delegation. Don’t get it confused with StrayaRoos, Strayan Rus are here for the party!

BLIDYY - Mizhnarodna Khokeyna Arena «Blidyy» (1,500)

It is one of the most intimate locations at this World Cup of Hockey, but that won't make it any less special when nations come to play at the Mizhnarodna Khokeyna Arena. Located on the outskirts of Blidyy, the arena is served by local bus stops and the local train station, so getting to this remote part of the city should not be a challenge. While local amenities are somewhat scarce, most of the main restaurants and facilities are located either in the arena itself, so should have no trouble looking for a drink, or a bite to eat. Fans are very close to the ice with this one, so make sure you make yourself heard and show your support for your team in the ice.

GROUP F - Tsirkuni & Starannist

Valanora (4)
Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland (25)
Anthor (49)
Katterimunk (UR)
The Deer Colony of Northern Tochalea (UR)

TSIRKUNI - Tsirkuni Ice Rink (5,000)

The Biggest Ice Rink in Strayan Rus, with 5,000 seats. It has been a grand undertaking to convert this venue to international standards, but it has been done to host five matches at this level for the tournament. The temporary stands will stay in place throughout the tournament and will give every fan a great view of the action, no matter where they are on the ice. The city of Tsirkuni will also be hosting some special events to allow all visiting fans a chance to enjoy themselves before the action begins in earnest. Even as opponents on the ice, travelling visitors can come together as friends in the end.

STARANNIST - Starannist Arena (7,500)

Starannist Arena is one of the main indoor arenas in the nation, hosting many domestic events in the past, making it the best place to start for visitors in Strayan Rus. It is located around 25km south of Arena Blidyy, and is the second biggest indoor venue in Strayan Rus. The locals in Starannist are used to many visitors lining the roads outside of the Starannist Arena, with bars and eateries plentiful outside of the arena. Whether you're just looking for a drink, or you're looking for a hearty meal to fill yourself up, there's something for everyone in and around Starannist.

Kalmarlund

The Republic of Kalmarlund is located in Northern Novapax, laying to the east of Nightom and to the north of Noem and Darkmania. Kalmarlund has a long western coastline to the North Ocean Centurium. Southern Kalmarlund is predominantly flat and agricultural, with denser forest coverage and mountainous terrain up north. Population density is higher in the southern regions, which is generally more developed with good infrastructure.

Most of Kalmarlund has a temperate climate, despite its northern latitude, with largely four distinct seasons and mild temperatures throughout the year. The winter in the far south is usually weak and is only manifested through some shorter periods with snow and sub-zero temperatures, autumn may well turn into spring there, without a distinct period of winter. The country can be divided into three types of climate: the southernmost part has an oceanic climate, the central part has a humid continental climate and the northernmost part has a subarctic climate.

Kalmarlund is relatively well accessible both by air and sea. International airports are present in the Capital City of Lindborg as well as Falunholm and Virkestad. The nation has a large railroad network, connecting all major hubs as well as many smaller towns and settlements, allowing visiting fans to travel all over the nation. In addition, Kalmarlund has a well maintained road network with various companies offering rental car services.

Kalmarlund is a rather liberal nation and a great consumer of mass culture. Foreign media and television has a big impact on Kalmarlundians, while various old holidays are still being celebrated as well. Kalmarlundians are also rather sport-oriented, with ice hockey being the most popular sport in the nation. Kalmarlundian official language is Swedish, while English is being taught in schools as a mandatory second language. Kalmarlund has right-hand traffic. The national currency is Krona (kr).

GROUP G - Lindborg

Elejamie (2)
Kelssek (16)
The Jovannic (64)
Kalmarlund (UR)
Serdtgyu (UR)

LINDBORG - Globe Arena (13,600)

Indoor arena in Lindborg, a large spherical building located right in the heart of the city centre is a famous landmark. With a diameter of 110 metres (360 ft) and an inner height of 85 metres (279 ft), the venue can house up to 13,600 spectators. While the Globe is classified as a multisports venue, it is primarily used for ice hockey (alongside futsal and musical concerts) and is a home arena to both Kalmarlundian national hockey team. The Globe Arena is used to hosting big hockey events, with the venue well suited to thousands of rowdy fans cheering on their team.

LINDBORG - Halgrimsrinken (9,000)

An indoor sports arena located at the outskirts of Lindborg, the venue was built in 2017 to become the home arena of HC Lindborg Björnar. The venue is capable of hosting matches with attendances of up to 9,000 spectators. Despite being located on the outskirts of Lindborg, the arena has a plethora of transit links with the city centre, so it's will not be difficult to get around if your team is playing at Halgrimsrinken.

GROUP H - Falunholm & Lundholm

Ko-oren (5)
Delaclava (17)
Sudilia (50)
Lacfroid (UR)
Evinea (UR)

FALUNHOLM - Räven Arena (8,500)

Located in Falunholm, the third largest city in Kalmarlund. The arena has a capacity of 8,500 spectators. Räven Arena is the home arena of Falunholm Räven IF ice hockey team. Falunhom's cooler climate will make this a perfect winter venue for Ice Hockey, with the night falling very early on the wood and glass façade of the Raven Arena. While it may be quiet when night falls, there are plenty of wonderful sights to be found around the city, with the numerous parks turning into a winter wonderland if the weather is right. A Kalmarlund hot-chocolate hits differently once the mercury goes below zero, so don't forget to get one from the many vendors around the city.

LUNDHOLM - Neuhallen (10,000)

Neuhallen is an indoor arena located in the Lundholm city centre. Located 2-hour drive away from the city of Falunholm, the arena in Lundholm is a modern facility with a capacity of 10,000 spectators. Neuhallen is the home arena of Lundholm IS ice hockey team. In a cooler nation than many in Novapax, the sport of Ice Hockey is more established than most. Neuhallen is right at the heart of Lundholm, so it will not be difficult to find things to do before your team's big game. Nearby hotels and hostels are plentiful, and can accommodate the many thousands of fans descending on Lundholm as they look to extend their WCOH journeys.

Darkmania

Darkmania is a federal republic with 41 provinces and their Federal Territory, famous for their green forests, their mountains and questionable wine tastes. Within darkmania’s lands you will encounter a lot of different climates, the dominant climate being Oceanic. Rainfall is common in Darkmania.

The darkmaian language is spoken by the majority of darkmanian and is known for having two written forms; western style which is more written in the north and western part of Darkmania and eastern style who is more written in the eastern part, the main difference being how some words are spelled.

GROUP I - Orkendrem & Anyme

Gyatso-Kai (1)
Abanhfleft (22)
Squornshelan Remnant States (56)
Magnecia (85)
Darkmania (UR)

ORKENDREM - Gälme Ëis Höckey Häk (20,000)

Örkendrem is the capital city of Darkmania and perhaps the largest city in Novapax with 12 million inhabitants living within. The city is known for many things, most famously its known as the location of all major government offices on a federal level. Having hosted international events like the WorldVision Song Contest and World Hit Festival. Orkendrem is well versed in hosting international events, with the sport of ice hockey close to the hearts of many Darkmanian citizens.

ANYME - Anÿme Community Arena (11,000)

Anÿme is Darkmania’s 5th largest city by population size and perhaps the one with the most unfortunate name. The southern resort city is most famously known as the host city of Worldvision Song Contest 92 with Anÿme Community Arena being the host city. Dubbed “Holiday Capital of Darkmania”, their are known for their zoo, being the largest zoo in Darkmania by far, their downtown with their old houses from around 1880s aswell as being the smallest city in Darkmania without a metro because the tram/light-rail network covers all the city and suburbs.

RENDSTYRNA - Rëndstÿrna ËisHöckey Ärenä (7,500)

Rënstÿrna is a cosy medium-sized town known as the wintersport capital of Darkmania, with more skiing resorts than any other places in Darkmania. The town also has a lot of wintersport venues, including a luge-sliding track, several ice skating halls and their primary ice hockey hall, which is built inside of a mountain. It is one of the most magnificent sights at this World Cup of Hockey, so fans travelling over to this arena might want to bring a camera or two to savour the occasion.

JELMARKE - Jëlmarkë Arena (5,000)

Jëlsmarkë is a small town with “only” 25 000 inhabitants but it is also known for having a rich mining heritage, a legacy that has left its mark is the fact that it is the smallest place with a “metro”. Why they call it a metro is unknown as it is just an old tramway with five stations, but it has been called a “metro” due to local slang, and as such has been recognized as a metro.

“Jëlsmarkë Coppers' ' is one of the top teams in Darkmanian Ice Hockey, having won 17 national titles since 1944 when “Coppers”. The name comes from the fact that copper was mined in Jëlsmarkë. They are located in “Builerman Arena”, dubbed Jëlmarkë Arena for the tournament, an venue from the 1970’s to provide an indoor venue for the team, replacing the old outdoor ice rink.

National Ice Hockey Team

Of all the Cordian teams, this is probably the best relative to their competition. Coming off a quarterfinals run in their first World Cup of Hockey - the 44th edition - that featured Cinderella fratricide against Le Choix, followed by an unlikely win in a massive snowstorm against hosts Quebec and Shingoryeo, the North Stars lost a close game to Siovanija and Teusland to close out their run. That's not even mentioning their incredible finish in the group stage; victories in the last four games, including a 2-0 win over Cassadaigua, coupled with Chromatik losses in each of that nation's last four, put the Cordians into the play-ins. While the success in that tournament was viewed as unlikely, the Cordians have since gone on a campaign to prove the doubters wrong. After a disappointing loss to upstarts Efnakia in the AOHC quarterfinals, the men’s team advancing to the Round of 12 at the ensuing Olympics and the women making it all the way to bronze, the Cordians established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the 45th World Cup of Hockey. They backed that up, too, with their only loss coming against powerhouses Ko-oren and securing revenge against Efnakia in the group stage, the Cordians managed to upset the elite program from Quebec and Shingoryeo again to eliminate them in the Round of 16 for the second year in a row. Now, the Quebecois national team has dropped out of the tournament and will be replaced with what we expect to be an entirely new roster under the Independent Athletes from Quebec banner - and they will have to face the Cordians, now the top seed in Group B on the second day of group stage play at this edition. Margaret appears to have her eye on the Cordians.

One more notable thing about the Cordian national hockey team - they currently sit 1-4 in quarterfinals, 0-4 if you don’t count the women’s run to bronze at the Olympics. It’s become a thing to watch, and with the North Stars becoming a true ice hockey power, they need to break through to the semifinals at some point if they want to join the best of the best.

References to "the league" are references to the CIHL, the professional Cordian hockey league.

Coach: Kress "Terrible" Thomassen, 49
A former CIHL player herself, Thomassen won the league championship on three occasions in the pre-internationalization era with the Danvirk Wall.

ROSTER:

First Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Justin Perreau
Age: 27
Team: Lakeside Warriors
A speedy left wing who can shoot and pass with precision, Perreau is consistently Lakeside's top scorer.

Center - Randolf Karlsson
Age: 27
Team: Gilded City Golden
Karlsson can do two things: win faceoffs and fire incredibly powerful shots. Luckily, he's very good at those two things. The move up to Line 1 with Eric Eaton’s retirement should suit him well, with Perreau providing options and Ericsen screening.

Right Wing - Harald Ericsen
Age: 29
Team: Cordasfjord Crusaders
Known for his netfront battling, Ericsen's screens are notoriously good and the defense invariably scores more goals when he's on the ice.

Second Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Jennifer Vosun
Age: 26
Team: East Fjord HC
Vosun is a force on both offense and defense for East Fjord, blocking a lot of shots every game and cutting down shooting angles very effectively. Her two-way ability has secured her a spot on the first line of both penalty kills.

Center - Martin Kordsen
Age: 23
Team: North Bay Lightning
Easily the best younger player in the Isles, and with perhaps the best skating skills anywhere in the Isles, Kordsen signed with the Lightning right off his national semifinalist school team, not even playing junior hockey or anything. Now the best player on the Lightning, Kordsen leads the team in just about everything, but North Bay have found themselves stuck in the AA division since the last WCoH.

Right Wing - Rurik Dirsson
Age: 27
Team: Cordasfjord Crusaders
Dirsson is usually one of the league's best playmakers, and it's a great help to his Crusaders, the defending CIHL champions.

Third Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Magnus Bjornsen
Age: 24
Team: Red Hill Sappers
Bjornsen ended up signing with the Red Hill Sappers, a small team in a small town with a legendary hockey tradition, and in his second season with the team he led them to a promotion to the AAA division and was a huge factor in Red Hill’s upset of Vikings HC in the CIHL playoffs.

Center - Alicia Sorensen
Age: 19
Team: Jutland Whalers
An elite talent in Jutland, the Whalers and Riveters went at it to sign her - and the Whalers won. Sorenson just turned 19 and by Hockey Cordia rules can now play hockey for professional teams and the senior national team, so she didn’t figure into the Whalers’ CIHL run last season, but she’ll be there next year, and coming off an appearance in the WCoH too. Sorenson is a well-rounded hockey player, but is best with her shot - hard, accurate, and scorer of the goal that eliminated Martin Kordsen’s team from the national championships back when she was just fifteen and him eighteen. How about that for full-circle?

Right Wing - Signy MacLeod
Age: 24
Team: Jutland Riveters
A great playmaker who is next up on the powerplay when the team is short a player for whatever reason, MacLeod’s passes are almost always on the tape. Coupled with an impressive awareness of the game and a scoring touch that is not to be ignored, MacLeod is a sleeper candidate for player of the game on any given day.

Fourth Line - Forwards
Left Wing - Bergonund Olafsen
Age: 29
Team: White River Eagles
Olafsen is a grinder, and his line has the best forecheck on the team, largely thanks to his determination in battles, and his size. See Olafsen coming in behind you and you'll cough up the puck like the skinny kid coughing up his lunch money.

Center - Will Egilsen
Age: 30
Team: Thor's Rest Thunder
Egilsen spends most of his time in the offensive zone, not because he creates offense, but because the forechecks he runs are spot-on.

Right Wing - Tryggve Eriksson
Age: 28
Team: Jutland Whalers
Eriksson is at his best battling in the corners; he rarely comes out without the puck.

Defense - Pair 1
Halfdan and Ivar Leifssen
Age: 28
Team: Jutland Riveters
These twins are both over six feet tall and they have the hardest shots in the league. They're major offensive contributors for the Riveters because of their shots, which are dangerous from nearly anywhere.

Defense - Pair 2
Eric Walker
Age: 31
Team: East Fjord HC
Walker plays very well in Cordia's man-on-man scheme and is not afraid to play physically. The biggest hits in the game often come from him.

Freydis Svensen
Age: 29
Team: Lakeside Warriors
Svensen excels at every method of shot prevention: blocking, lifting the stick, contesting the puck, and so on. When she marks a player, they rarely score.

Defense - Pair 3
Haakon Haraldsen
Age: 22
Team: Kersson College
Haraldsen's shutdown defense in the college league has turned Kersson into a force to be reckoned with this past season.

Svein Svensson
Age: 23
Team: Mountainview Typhoon
Don't laugh at his name, or you'll find yourself on the ice, with him laughing at you. Svensson is the most physical player on the ice despite being one of the youngest.

Goaltenders
Goalies will split time in the group stage, with Smith to start against the unranked sides (OOC: he will be on a very tight leash - if Cordia is losing and he’s allowed two or more goals, he’ll be yanked in favor of Ericsson) and Ericsson in net against Patriotlandia and Cassadaigua.

Starter - Chris Ericsson
Age: 27
Team: Valley Fold Vengeance
Was critical to the Cordians' incredible quarterfinals run in WCoH 44, which featured six wins in a row - of which Ericsson played five. Also led the Cordians to the quarterfinals in WCoH 45, and played in both victories over Quebec and Shingoryeo.

Backup - Olaf Smith
Age: 29
Team: Jutland Whalers
Smith always comes up big in big games and is one of the most consistent goaltenders in the CIHL.

SYSTEMS:

OOC: These are more guidelines than rules, but if you ever want to talk about systems and how you plan to counter them, here they are.
Forecheck: ABC sounded dumb last time. We'll just call it the Cordian forecheck this time around. Much less elementary. One player pressures opposing defensemen while other players cover all other players so that the other team is left with no options.
Image

Even Strength Defensive Zone: Below the tops of the circles is man-on-man play; above them is zone play. Important: If an opposing player moves from above to below or vice-versa, coverage changes.
Image

Breakout: Pull-system breakout, used to create either defensive panic or a 1-on-0 advantage. The weakside winger begins skating as soon as they see puck possession is theirs; strongside wing and center set up in typical breakout procedure, with the added option of a speeding weakside winger.
Image

Powerplay: The 1-3-1. The idea is to get either a shot from the slot, a cross-ice pass for a shot, or a shot for a rebound and a scramble in front of the net.
Powerplay Unit 1: Perreau-Karlsson-Ericsen Leifssen-Leifssen
Powerplay Unit 2: Bjornsen-Kordsen-Dirsson Walker-Svensen
Image

4-man Penalty Kill: Box or Diamond, depending on the opposing powerplay system. The idea is to not overcommit so as to not allow shots from the inside; shots from the outside are unavoidable.
Penalty Kill Unit 1: Vosun-Egilsen H. Leifssen-Svensen
Penalty Kill Unit 2: Perreau-Ericsen Walker-Haraldsen
Image

3-man Penalty Kill: Triangle or Right Triangle, depending on opposing powerplay system. In a Right Triangle, rather than the point player moving back and forth during perimeter passing, the entire formation rotates, with the opposite defensemen instead moving up, the same-side defenseman moving over, and the point player moving back.
3-man PK Unit 1: Vosun Svensen-I. Leifssen
3-man PK Unit 2: Ericsen Walker-Haraldsen

Hockey in Cordia is on par with football (soccer) in popularity. With a strong junior league and school system, players rarely make it onto senior team rosters in the CIHL until they reach 21, with a few exceptional cases. The national league is the Cordian Isles Hockey League. The reigning league champions are the Cordasfjord Crusaders. Cordian hockey as coached by Kress "Terrible" Thomassen is exceptionally aggressive, trading defensive mistakes for offensive chances, relying on a strong forecheck to keep the puck out of their own zone. Players are expected to play a physical game; expect hits, but mostly to make the play. Petty penalties may happen, especially in rough losses. Oh, and you'll hear plenty of trash talk on the ice. A true Cordian talks a good game. Even inside their own zone, Cordian forwards will cheat up at the first sign of possession, a risky move that leaves men on both teams open and can work either way. As a result, the WCoH Federation rates Cordia's playstyle a +3.5.

- RP my players as talking a lot of trash, down to deciding what they say. Profanity is fine, anything discriminatory from my players is not unless I give the go-ahead.
- RP my players as taking cheap-shots, but only if they dislike your team or a player on your team.

Nation Information
Full Name: The Republic of Patriotlandia
Short Name: Patriotlandia
Capital: Jolicoeur, Province of Abelanne
Demonym: Patriotlandian, although familiar, "Patriot" is often accepted as well.
Highest Domestic League: PHA Division 1
Nickname: The Mountaineers

The Patriotlandia Hockey Association announced today the official national team roster ahead of its participation in the 46th World Cup of Hockey. The Mountaineers are to join group B and play the likes of The Cordian Isles, Cassadaigua, Juvencus and Independent Athletes from Quebec. Unlike in their last outing, the team now has an official ranking allowing them not to feel like the runt of the group. However, the national team missed the last edition of the tournement after the usual mailman got sick and his replacement confused the mailing bin with the recycling. Having now learned the importance of emails, the Patriotlandians are back on the world stage and they will be looking to improve and get out of their group.

Following their decent result in their first international tournament. The PHA allowed for a bigger budget which prompted the national team to secure new threads for this edition.

Staff:
Head Coach: François Saumure, Grand-Ours Bears
Assistant Coach: Romain Durivage, Blackbay Islanders
Special Teams Coach: Gael Wilson

After finishing a point away from play-off contention in their last WCoH outage the coaching staff is back to build upon these foundations. The staff added former captain Gael Wilson who will be tasked with special units. The former defenseman was a stout penalty killer during his playing days and should bring plenty of experience to the team.

Forward Lines
1) Biron	Moran Danault (C)
2) Galant Herault Mann
3) Curtis (A) Bertrand Lambert
4) Offmeister Rochester Prunel
The forward group was shuffled this time around to allow for a faster paced game and improve the scoring ability of the group. After an impressive showing in the last tournament and continued success in the domestic league Biron, Moran and Danault see themselves heading the forward corp. Danault’s incisive passing, Moran’s speed and Biron’s positioning should make this line an impressive all rounder in the offensive zone. The second line is able to create chances off the rush as well as maintaining pressure on the opponent’s defense. The third line is composed of proven 2-way players and will be able to compete for loose pucks no matter where it is on the ice. The fourth line has been revamped to allow for more offensive capabilities. Rochester’s expertise will be flanked with Prunel and Offmeister’s youthfulness. With a new mantra of "No attack, no chance", the group will be looking to ripple the twine a lot more often.

Defensive Pairs
1)Friedova (A)	Dartagne
2)Kirouac Dunlop
3)Guerrier Bentley
The defensive core hasn’t changed much with the exception of Denise Bentley taking over Gael Wilson’s spot on the roster. Her pairing with Quentin Guerrier should be sound defensively even if they won't blow the opposition away with fine puck control and cross ice passes. Both Friedova and Dartagne have elite puck moving ability and are able to adequately cover on defense. The duo was prolific during the last competition scoring 10 points in 12 games. Kirouac and Dunlop should have decent chemistry, having both played with HC Jolicoeur before the former's signing with the Asche Flames.

Goaltenders
1)Terellien
2)Latraverse
Having proven he can still play at a high level, Hervé Terellien is back. The 37 year old just led the Asche Flames to yet another playoff appearance securing his place in Patriotlandia's greats. It is believed the Renée Latraverse will hold a bigger role this tournament alternating starting duties during the group stage. She was an integral part of Port-la-Ville Anchors' championship run this past season. Her flamboyant and acrobatic goaltending style is often reprimanded for being inefficient but Renée as made it a habit of proving them wrong.

Nickname: The Ice-a-phants
Style Mod: -1

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], In fact, the men's national team - nicknamed the Ice-a-phants as of 2021 - were one of the best teams in the multiverse, having made the World Cup of Hockey finals four times in four consecutive competitions; winning two (29th edition against Gregoryisgodistan and 31st edition against Valanora) and losing two (30th and 32nd, both times against Valanora), as well as two bronze medal games; although the B-team won a gold medal in the men's ice hockey at the 12th Winter Olympics, they're considered a different team and as a result their achievement is not counted alongside the three WCoH wins. They were also been one of the best teams in the tournament, very nearly making it out of the group stage in their inaugural tournament, making it to the quarter-finals in their second, winning the bronze in their third and staying in the top ten in rankings since the 29th edition (and top 3 since the 30th WCoH), even nabbing a third trophy in the 35th edition. However a disappointing and controversial run in the 38th tournament saw them withdraw from the competition in anger for a few editions (with former WCoH vice president Ed Peak even stepping down from his role and retiring from the public eye until his death in 2020) and their runs in in the 41st and 42nd editions were uphill battles to try and return to relevance. Fortunately, a surprise fourth star at the 43rd World Cup of Hockey as well as a silver medal at the 44th edition have proved that they may not be entirely irrelevant just yet, although a somewhat dismal run at the 45th edition where they allowed at least two goals per game (seriously, why?) might've put a little bit of a dampener on things.

Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium, Davenport, WYKN
Image
Horn: Generic ship horn
Goal song: Dropkick Murphys - I'm Shipping Up To Boston
Penalty song: Irish Rovers - Drunken Sailor
Win song: Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing

Home to the Davenport Dockers - the most successful team in the ENIHL (Elejamian National Ice Hockey League) - and the national team. Built in 1992 to replace Dockside Stadium, which was eventually demolished in 1995, Davenport Stadium is the largest ice hockey arena in Elejamie, with a capacity of 18,500. The stadium was originally known as the Davenport Stadium but it also spent a brief spell in the early 2000s as the Rapid Beer Co. Stadium. Eventually, it was renamed the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium just in time for the start of the 2015/16 season, in honour of famed politician and diplomat Declan Madgwick (1927-2015).

For the record: In the northwest of Elejamie, the term "stadium" is used for any building which hosts a professional sports team even if they don't play on a pitch.

Built in 1989, the HomeFiller Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena, especially in situations where HomeFiller isn't sponsoring the event in question. With a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins; the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and home to the Coventry Nets basketball team. It entered a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller in 2013, which is due to expire at the end of the season and isn't expected to be renewed.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes (but nothing too serious; one person at a time and they can't be out for anything longer than two games. Killing is definitely out)
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Yes (see above)
Assign Penalties to my Players: Yes (but try not to make my players seem dirty, especially since Cerin Meloten and Harrison Blackburn are two of the nicest players on and off the ice and Stacy Saunders is more interested in getting points rather than getting himself into trouble)
Eject my Players: Yes (one ejection per match with a one game suspension and they have to serve their suspension before another player can be ejected)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is (fighting I'm OK with and gave a list of people likely to fight in the "Everything Else" spoiler) but I'd recommend TGing me if you've got any other ideas

  • "Keh-reen Mah-loh-tahn"; "Ah-lah-YEHM Mahn ees-hoh-kee teem".
  • Stacy Saunders is still a guy, if anyone's wondering. So, if you do mention him in your RP, make sure you say "he", "him" and "his" instead of "she" and "her".
  • In the event that any of my players interest you and you want to sign them, please tell me which one you want, which club wants them and all the details.
  • Please get back to me with RP info by 8pm BST. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and put my own stuff in.
  • My main enforcers are Lupe, Carlos Sierra, Ethan Swinburne, Mike Keller and Bill Judge (who was Elejamie's main enforcer during WJHC8). The only players that don't fight are Stacy Saunders, Cerin Meloten and Harrison Blackburn. Everyone else can fight, just not as often as those first guys I've mentioned.
  • Elejamie will wear their alt kit on MD1 and either the quarter-final or the semi-final if they're not the home side for the QF.
  • Although "Carpio" appears on his jersey, Kiko Carpio is usually on a full name basis when he's being commentated on. I won't complain if you just call him "Carpio", though.
  • Danilo and Felipe Barajas are twin brothers, with Danilo being the oldest by about five minutes.

DARKMANIA

Ice hockey in Darkmania is a popular sport, so it’s a surprise that this is their first World Cup. As Darkmania is one of the many co-hosts of the World Cup it is natural for Darkmania to debut, in order to promote darkmanian ice hockey abroad. Or in this case, at home soil.

Ice hockey was first played in Darkmania in the 1930s and today is Darkmania's 4th most popular sport after football, water polo, and field hockey. Ice hockey halls are spread out from the metropolis that is Örkendrem to the small mining town of Jëlmarkë. It's unknown the exact number but it's said to be just "under or over" 50 with 70 different teams. "EïsLüga", in English known as "Ice League" is the top league in darkmanian ice hockey with 14 teams duking it out on a home and away basis. And don't forget the National Cup.

For the tournament, 20 players from many different teams have been called up to represent Darkmania.

HOTELS FULLY BOOKED

Örkemdrem Airport Wëtterstädt

Kären Lökmen
@KarenLokmenDATV

Fans from all over the world have come to Örkendrem for the 46th Hockey World Cup, with games taking place in Örkendrem, Anÿme, Rënstÿrna, and Jëlsmarkë. For the first time Darkmania, along with Mercedini, where the finals will take place, Britonisea, Strayan Rus and Kalmarlund will host the tournament together, following years of planning and agreements within the national hockey federations. The agreement was the successful Mercedini-Novapax bid, that included Darkmania with their selected host places, as Rënstÿrna and Jëlsmarkë are towns, and Örkendrem and Anÿme are cities.

Wëtterstädt is the largest airport in Darkmania and they have reported a lot of traffic with fans having tickets to the matches. A lot of airports from the other host countries have also reported increased traffic. Hotels have been fully booked and the various metro, train, buses, and trams/light rail in all host cities have had a huge amount of fans transported to the venues and their overnight stay. In the city of Anÿme, a city known for having more hotel beds than inhabitants, all hotels have been booked. There have been some unverified reports of theft but so far there have been no controversies.

All games will be broadcasted by DaTV 1. Follow us at "www.datv.dm" to get updated every day.

Nova Anglicana World Cup of Hockey 46 Roster

Head Coach: Sherm Willis, DC Oilers
Style Modifier: +1.5
Captain: Darren Gordon
Assistant Captains: Sean Harper, Marc Broussard

1st Line
RW Ricky McCoy - hard worker who is harnessing raw talent, athletic build
C Sean Harper - steady, firm, even-keeled, leader, but his on-ice abilities in passing and shooting are excellent too
LW Andre Messier - sharp-tongued Acadien chirps at his opponents, but silences them with his wicked shot and skating abilities

2nd Line
RW David Manning - Capable of a four-point performance one night and looking lost the next, but finding his groove
C Alistair McDaniel - McDaniel is an artist with the puck on his stick, able to find both the net and his teammates, but he can get pushed around a little
LW Francois Coderre - Coderre is a shooting machine, shooting early and often, but the good thing is, it often goes in the net and he varies his shots well

3rd Line
RW Cedric Caldwell - a sniper, incredibly fast with a good body
C Peter Frazier - passes well, speedy with an eye for finding holes in the defense
LW Aaron Shelton - quick with his legs and his shot

4th Line
RW Garrett Brock - hustles, plays good defense, not afraid to lay a lick, there to wear people out
C Jean-Marc Belanger - passes well, moves well, not a scorer, but has good intangibles
LW Alain Marchand - small and speedy, tough to keep up with, big part of this hustle line, decent shooter

Pair 1
Marc Broussard - Broussard is an incredible talent, a two-way player who is at home on both ends of the ice, has become more of a team player
Matt Morrison - Morrison is tall and lanky, excellent at harassing opponents without a lot of physical contact, better than average shot

Pair 2
Stephen Barnett - Barnett is a big body, but not as slow as he looks, has a heavy shot, not afraid to defend his teammates, has become a leader
Patrick Drake - not a big guy, but pretty quick, heads up player with a positive disposition and excellent stick checking abilities

Pair 3
Daniel Ford - Ford is a hulking bruiser who can take your head off with a shot or with a check, but not particularly fast or skilled
Chris Kelley - Kelley is also a physical specimen, will fight if necessary, blocks plenty of shots

Goaltenders
Darren Gordon - technically and tactically sound but athleticism isn't top-tier
Joey Perry - a big body, blocks the net well, but can be beaten by skilled players

The Cordasfjord Daily
Eric Eaton to Retire

Cordasfjord, CORDIA- Friday saw an incredible victory for the Cordasfjord Crusaders, who dropped into the losers’ bracket early in the CIHL playoffs and made it all the way to Friday’s winner-take-all final against the Jutland Riveters. Cordasfjord dominated from start to finish to claim the double of regular season and playoff champions. However, there would be bad news for the Crusaders fanbase the next morning. At the postgame media conference, Eaton gave no signs of a big announcement, likely wanting to give the team and fans time to celebrate, which is in good form, something we’ve come to expect from our national team’s captain as someone who represents us on the world stage.

But this morning the Cordian hockey world awoke to a shock, as Eaton had put out a post overnight on twii.tur announcing that he would not be playing next season, for Cordasfjord or any other team, North Stars included. There had been speculation that Eaton might not stay with the Crusaders with his contract ending, but most pundits and fans expected him to sign an extension with the team.

@eric.eaton.cor

What a season it’s been, but it’s the end of the road for me. I’ve decided not to re-sign with Cordasfjord or any club side, and I will not be playing for the North Stars in the upcoming World Cup of Hockey. It’s time for me to enter the next stage of my life, and I will do so happily even though I’ll be leaving happy memories and the best teammates anyone could ask for behind.

@CordasfjordCrusaders : @HockeyCordia

Aside from the effect for Cordasfjord, who are losing their star player and leader coming off of a title and going into a Champions Hockey League season, there’s also an issue of succession for the national team. Who will become the captain, and who will take the opening alternate spot? Those questions will be answered once the first MD of the World Cup of Hockey hits and we get a look at the jerseys - and no earlier. Kress Thomassen has continued her policy of being stingy about team details aside from releasing the WCoH Federation-required roster, and we have never seen more than that from her. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate.

First Question: Who will become the North Stars’ next captain?

The decision is likely between Will Egilsen and Eric Walker. Both are experienced players who, along with the majority of this team, have played in the last two editions of the WCoH. Walker seems more likely to get the promotion; considered a strong, steady defenseman, he’s the kind of leader that will stay strong and keep the team going strong through good times and bad. Egilsen’s work ethic is unparalleled and rarely changes whether his team is up by five goals or down by five, but he doesn’t seem to have the same qualify of leadership we see in Walker.

Second Question: Who becomes the new alternate captain?

Again, there are two main options for this one. We can expect the new captain not to be a goalie per hockey tradition, nor a defenseman as the only other true candidate for captain there, Freydis Svensen, is usually paired with Eric Walker. That leaves the offense, where Justin Perreau and Martin Kordsen seem to be the best choices. Perreau has been on the first line since Cordia’s World Cup of Hockey debut and seen play in every single game the combined and mens’ teams have participated in. He has also been the team’s top scorer for a long time, with his speed and scoring touch marking him as a dangerous player for the opposition. On the other hand, there’s Martin Kordsen. Kordsen has almost the exact same playstyle as does Perreau, with perhaps better skating and less of a scoring touch. Kordsen has also made a huge impact for the team, with several of his goals deciding key games and the energy he brings to the ice unparalleled. Perreau, older and more refined than the younger Kordsen, is viewed as more likely to take the alternate spot, but don’t be surprised if Kress Thomassen adds a third alternate captain, as Martin Kordsen is likely to take the role of captain in future tournaments.

Third Question: What does this mean for the team?

Starting with Eric Eaton’s ability as a hockey player alone, this is a huge loss for the Cordians. Eaton led the Cordian first line to be one of the world’s most productive over the last few tournaments, and Randolf Karlsson will have his work cut out for him filling in at center. However, the WCoH Federation still ranks the Cordians as the world’s eighth-best team despite the loss of Eaton, so the North Stars are still fielding an incredibly good team for being in their third edition of the tournament. There’s also the injection of new blood into a team that has barely changed in the last four years. Alicia Sorenson is a generational talent to join the national team at just nineteen, and we’re finally starting to see new players replacing the old on this roster. There’s also the leadership side of things. Eaton served as captain both on the Cordasfjord Crusaders and on the North Stars, and his calming presence will be sorely missed. If the new captain can grow into the role, that will reduce the damage, but make no mistake; it will be very hard for anyone to live up to Eaton’s legacy as captain.

Goalies
G Per Janszoon (24) - Launott Polar Bears
G Aiane Alacia (29) - Serevne Northerners
G Wugeld Zudalu (22) - West Coast Blizzards

The new generation is here. Janszoon has been defending the goal since last cycle and has done so to a very high level. Alacia is on the squad for experience, to call on if Janszoon is in his own head too much. Zudalu is a remarkable talent, athletic and agile, and the Blizzards are the perfect team to make him into a long term starter.

Defencemen
Line 1
D Aennirin Ehoni (27) - South Aevanna Storm
D Aedeti Aenec (23) - Noordrug Bi-state
Line 2
D Riquard Winterhaag (22) - Launott Polar Bears
D Alaguna Aeniva (36) - Launott Polar Bears
Line 3
D Arisife Alinise (22) - Aevanna Plains Wanderers
D Vilokatsu Akinaga (21) - Arboren Vortex
Substitute
D Assanor Aiaros (28) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters

Two fine all-rounders in line one, the bruising duo of line two, and the up-and-coming line three. Expect to see Aiaros in place of Aeniva here and there, though. Aeniva is the oldest active player in the league and still plays to a ridiculously high level for his age to the point where you shouldn't overlook him for the NT. He's in the twilight of his career and a little more injury-prone than the rest, though. Akinaga, despite growing up in Yoshima, is a huge talent, Aenec is just a few years ahead in development. Ehoni and Winterhaag are fairly similar in skill, but Ehoni is faster on the ice while Winterhaag loves his contact.

Some brothers to keep track of: Mathias Loenaren of line 1 and Tiele Loenaren, substitute winger. Also: Aone Aenec in line four with starting defenceman Aedeti Aenec. Then there are some club links: all of line two, with Serevne renowned for its style of play, are from the Northerners. In early drafts of the depth chart we saw Aolopei on line three or four, but rapport from their club was deemed important enough to tear up the original pairings and go with this. Also: the defensive line four are all Aevanna Plains Wanderers. Besides those, the first line is the best Ko-oren has to offer, with Loenaren starting as a very young centre between a way more experienced IJsberg and Heerekornuit. Veteran centre Buck and veteran winger Aorifi are on the third line - don't get too hung up on the line names.

We have a number of new players after the retirement of Aorale Enibel, who always rivalled Buck for the starting centre spot, Aidaloph Autibel, his comrade on the right wing, Nyan, the long-term backup centre, and Hermanszoon, all-rounder on left and right wing. With four line 1 candidates out of the way, it's time to get a little creative.

Powerplay
Winterhaag - Aenec - IJsberg - Buck - Heerekornuit. Winterhaag's attacking tendencies with Buck's talent to obscure goalies, and the rest of the squad capable of making plays by themselves.

Penalty Kill
Aiaros - Aeniva - Groenstege - Aorifi. Older and more resilient players that are unlikely to get referred to the naughty bench themselves.

The Ko-orenite league cracked down on fighting to speed games up. Don't be surprised if the Dragonflies don't respond to a call to arms. Ice hockey is a regional (but not necessarily small) sport in Ko-oren, limited to frigid Aerellen, the temperate (but cold) northeast, and parts of the unwelcoming west coast. Venues are limited, and Aerellen's largest venue hosts multiple games per day while the season is on, so speeding up games and keeping them plannable is key. Languages used by the team are Dutch and Aerellen (Ko-orenite). Aerellen names are easily recognisable, they start with vowels, featuring many Au, Ao, Ai, Ae combinations at the start of each word. Tarrashall is also a culture that you'll run into, famous players from there include Hallady Buck and Yaller Nyan, and they often play for the West Coast Blizzards.

The league has made the move from amateurism/semi-professionalism to fully professional over the last year. To get there, some teams were moved, some merged, others folded while new teams (in different locations) sprang up to fill the void. This has left part of the fanbase bitter and resentful: their team might have moved, a 80+ year old rivalry might have disappeared, etc. The rest of the fanbase has been very welcoming: more of Ko-oren can enjoy the fastest team sport in the multiverse. Still, the league didn't exactly expand beyond its usual borders (Aerellen, the northeast, and the north coast). There's also the matter of Banija's team in Schemerdrecht: while opening up the city to ice hockey, it has taken away expansion opportunities.

Young players have had access to much better training facilities, so the average age of the team is going to be a bit low.

People's Party Extraordinary Conference Report

Number of Delegates: 443 delegates

Composition: 25 national committee members + 385 county committee members + 33 members of the parliamentary caucus

Breakdown:
  1. National: 5 national committee members + 14 list deputies = 19 delegates
  2. NAAZE: 1 national committee member + 14 (2*7) county committee members + 1 senator = 16 delegates
  3. New Brunswick: 4 national committee members + 119 (17*7) county committee members + 3 constituency deputies + 2 senators = 128 delegates
  4. Newfoundland & Labrador: 5 national committee members + 84 (12*7) county committee members + 2 constituency deputies + 2 senators = 93 delegates
  5. Nova Scotia: 6 national committee members + 126 (17*7) county committee members + 5 constituency deputies + 2 senators = 139 delegates
  6. PEI: 2 national committee members + 21 (3*7) county committee members + 1 senator = 24 delegates
  7. Quebec: 2 national committee members + 21 (17*7) county committee members + 1 senator = 24 delegates

Deputy Leader Election

Under special rules for elections of candidates at a party conference, voting proceeds in three rounds. Candidates must be nominated and seconded, and candidates may not refuse nomination. A candidate must win a majority of the votes cast in order to be elected. If no candidate has won a majority after the 1st round, half the candidates are eliminated, and again after the 2nd round, the procedure repeats. On the third round, the candidate with the most votes wins. Note: the delegate vote below will only add up to 441, as neither Party Leader Arsène Deslauriers nor Acting Deputy Leader Dick Spaulding cast ballots.

Dick Spaulding495954

Among those in the "Others" category who were eliminated included Edmund Baird, former Cabinet members Celia Yates, Scott Gilbert, Ann Lewis, and Charles Vail, as well as a brief effort to nominate Melody Savoy and a trial balloon of Michael Yoo, the popular New Brunswick provincial Minister of Education, a close Deslauriers ally.

Leonard Carroll acceptance excerpt: "I accept this honor with a solemn reverence. Today, you, my fellow party members, have chosen me in a free vote in which I neither sought this office, nor, once nominated, attempted to persuade you. This is a vote of confidence in my ability to represent you, to represent the people, and to bring our new ideas to the forefront of the national consciousness alongside our party leader. That a humble farmer would be invested with the #2 position in a major political party is an expression that this party represents salt-of-the-earth folks, and together, we're going to bring our government back to those people."

Carroll election analysis: Carroll's best quality is that he offends nobody. He doesn't represent the modernising Deslauriers wing, nor the reactionary Ramseyist wing, nor is he a representative of big-money interests, social conservatives, business conservatives, a particular province, or anything else but farmers. Everyone can agree agriculture is important. He's conservative enough to satisfy right-wingers without being too conservative for everyday voters. Kelly Goodman was seen as perhaps a little too far away from the Ramseyist wing, and Foster, despite his obvious strength, would offer a bit too much of a contrast at the top of the party with Deslauriers. Dick Spaulding is an amiable old man, but he's not inspiring enough to really attract a big enough block of votes.

Deslauriers speech excerpt: "My fellow party members, we have been chastened by the electorate. It is now time to return to them, to find the new, popular centre where broad pluralities or majorities of the Nova Anglican nation can agree. This does not mean abandoning long held beliefs, but rather returning to our roots. When this nation was founded, it was as a beacon of Christian hope. When this party was founded, it held the principles of Christian democracy sacred. Our nation has changed, and our party has changed as well, but I believe our party has drifted in the opposite direction from the nation.

Where once we debated the common good, we now debate who to exclude from the common good. Where once we sought the creation of structures that allowed human flourishing, we now seek to tear down structures, whatever they may be. It is this drift that has allowed the left wing to become ascendant in this nation. My friends, we cannot separate our desire for a flourishing civil society composed of virtuous individuals free to pursue their interests within the bounds of the common good from our Christian faith. This desire to see human potential fulfilled and the ideal of "the good" placed at the heart of our nation is the essence of Christian democracy. The state must create conditions for society to flourish, rather than commanding from on high as the left does, or erecting barriers to participation in the good, as some would have us do. This is why I give to you today the new, Christian democratic, People's Party!"

About Depivik and Depivik Hockey
Depivik
The fledgling nation of Depivik spans the northern expanse of territory that once comprised the northeastern reaches of Greenland, as well as certain territories once held by Canada, namely in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. Though mighty in size, this nation's population reflects the nature of the horizon, sparse in number, hardy and well-weathered. With a population of just shy of t0,000, much of which are concentrated in seaside settlements, the nation of Depivik looks to continue to punch above its weight in global issues large and small.

Depivik Hockey
Though the Depivik Hockey League does not yet intend to begin play until this winter, the free agents that comprise the national team are some of the nations' finest, as seen in training camps held around the country over the past few years. From a pool of thousands came these fine young men, all of whom are among the very best at what they do. As the Association for Depivik University Sports (ADUS) commences its inaugural season in operation, too, we look to the sanctioning of ice hockey as a further opportunity to grow our game, but these men have the high honor of representing Depivik not only as its first class of international sportspeople, but too as the first international representatives of any kind to attend a sporting event in Depivik. With hockey the natural game given the climate of Depivik, this is only a natural choice.

Look for rapid play, with a lot of interchange between lines. Short shifts, frenetic play, and a cutting viciousness that rarely comes to light unless provoked. The Depivik team is swift, opting for slighter builds and fleeter feet to better suit the style of play the natural environment of Depivik begets.

*Beep beep beep beep*

This feels like any other day but it somehow feels like a new beginning. Today is National team presentation day and a few cycles ago Gael Wilson was named captain of this rag tag group of men and women from Patriotlandia. As he prepares himself for the day ahead, he grabs two slices of toast and his reusable coffee mug. He would prefer a full breakfast but today is going to be full of activities and time is precious.

As he drives towards the practice center, in a surprisingly humble family sedan, he reflects on the past World Cup. From terrible defeats to stunning upset, the Mountaineers and their fans had plenty to think about during the international break. Although they fell short of the playoffs, the team managed to end on a sweet note by winning against Valanora ranked as favourites at the time. When Gael sees the arena from the street, he is almost as excited as his children on Christmas morning. Who will be the next heroes of Patriotlandia? Will the established core prove itself worthy or will newcomers nip at their heels? Only time will tell.

He enters the arena from the usual player's entrance but this time the media is huddled around returning winger Camille Danault. They shares a faint smile as he passes by. This time is different for Gael, although he is bringing a stick and a pair of skates, the grizzled veteran traded his shoulder pads for a coach's whistle. After an illustrious career at the national level and an international appearance, he felt he had done enough, but the rink has a way to call you back to it. As he enters, the coaches room still has the distinct smell of dry erase markers and instant coffee. Meeting François and Romain for the first time as equals is daunting but the pair are joyful and they reminisce about when they got their start as well. Afterwards, they discuss the plan for today, the players have to do a gauntlet of press interviews before they stride onto the ice for a quick walkthrough. Then it will be off to the airport for the long flight to Exton and West Zoloroni.

On the ice, the new first line of Biron, Moran and Danault seems to really click, the passes are crisp and they seem to have an effortless flow about them. Offmeister and Prunel look eager to prove their worth after being kept on the sidelines during the last World Cup. On defence, Janna Friedova is still a force of nature despite her small frame. She can win battles along the boards and light the lamp at the other end of the ice. Gael reflects that she’ll most likely be a top points getter on the team, especially with the powerplay system he has in mind. Better not show it just yet, who knows which team has scouts hiding in the crowd.

Regions. You can't live with them, can't live without them. Atlantian Oceania strangely fits both halves of that sentence for us. And it splits Ko-orenite politics to this day - who can tell if the Anaia move worked out for us culturally, economically, socially, or militarily? A long, long time ago, the rulers of the fledgling little archipelago decided to join Atlantian Oceania over Esportiva and Rushmore, and that decision shaped Ko-oren more than any other decision.

There's ups and downs to all big regions. Atlantian Oceania? Old, respected, and established, but also traditional. Rushmore? Old, respected, and established, but also political and democratic (well, sometimes). Esportiva? Young and energetic yet sometimes we deal with them every day and then we don't see them for a few years. Anaia? Young, daring, but also change for the sake of change. Either way, others have done write ups of the major regions of the sporting world better than that. Most of them, however, stop there. Some might remember to put in the Dreamed Realm, or the Pony Lands, etcetera. In recent years, Mandalanusa are starting to make waves, but don't be fooled, their governments are older and have stronger services than you might think. And then some are quick to point at Sonnel as part of the big six (or seven? Eight? Nine?) though truth be told we sometimes forget about Sonnel until we find one of those nations in a World Cup (of Hockey, Gridiron, Basketball, Underwater Rugby) draw and they remind us that it is, in fact, Sonnelin' time, until we've played them home and away and we don't see each other for a Sonnelion years.

And then there's this World Cup of Hockey. In Mercedini, we thought, and then we saw Novapax. A region that, if we study it a little more closely, might be a bigger sporting region than Sonnel (knowing full well that that statement puts me, Ameo Aehla of Ethos, Aerellen, in immediate and personal peril, knowing the Sonnelians). Novapax is home to Darkmania, Mercedini, Britonisea, and Togonistan, and those are just the ones that we've played in a tournament before. All of those, save Togonistan, help with the hosting of the World Cup of Hockey. Each host two groups each, and to say if we got a favourable draw means we first have to find out a little bit about the five hosts.

Our opponents in the World Cup of Football a few times, Mercedini is the most recognisable name for most Ko-orenites, because let's face it, most Ko-orenites follow football. It's huge and southern, so a little like us in that it is its own archipelago with no neighbours. Britonisea might be most like Ko-oren, in the sense that all of your assumptions about getting to places and why should go there hold up: you go somewhere by train and you go there because the landscape is beautiful almost everywhere. Even the landmass looks a little like us, with a huge bay coming in from the east and a bit of extra land in the southwest. Strayan Rus makes me think of an Anaian nation of a very similar name. Darkmania is the bridge that keeps the two largest landmasses of the region together, the bridge between Terra Centralia and Terra Orrientalia. And then there's Kalmarlund to the north, with Britonisea to its west and Darkmania to its south. It's similar to our own Sudaefjoll as an oceanic stretch of land with a mild, though cold, climate.

And that's the one we're going to.

To Falunholm's winter wonderland and Lundholm's slightly more sporting spirit, in two stadiums that would rank as the 2nd and 3rd largest if they were in Ko-oren, behind the temple of Aevanna but well ahead of the other 7-8 frequently used Ko-orenite venues.

v Lacfroid @ Falunholm. The Butterflies are a great companion to our Dragonflies... they're both flies but aren't... I guess. It's unfortunate that we have so few francophones on our team, they might steal some tactics here and there.

The EIHB were stuck in a small rut.

Following Alex Sorenson's departure from the head coaching spot at the end of the 45th World Cup of Hockey, something that he was planning to do regardless of how his team did, they were left scrambling to find someone to take the top spot. They had a small shortlist of names but kept hitting brick walls. Ron Berg, who had just finished his Cup-winning stint with the Rosetta Royals? He retired from coaching at the end of last season due to a health scare. Head coach for the U-20 squad Andy Bailey? He said he wanted to keep working with the Junior Ice-a-phants even if they haven't made a WJHC appearance in quite a while. Out-going assistant coach Akio Shimasaki? Decided to take the vacant Aloc IHT spot instead. A promotion for assistant coach Eduardo Carreras? He has no interest in any sort of head coaching role and instead chose to remain an assistant coach. Anatoly Kasputin, who had finally retired from ice hockey at the end of last season? Not only did he consider himself too green for the role but he has no real interest in coaching anything other than a training camp. Tim Furst? He wasn't interested, full stop.

With the list becoming narrower and narrower and the possibility of them looking abroad for a new coach being a likely possibility, they fortunately managed to come across someone who was actually interested in taking the role. Better yet, it was not only a revered figure in Elejamian ice hockey but also a former coach for the national side. Even better, he had lead them to three World Cup of Hockey trophies, two runner-up spots and two bronze medals. It was the one and only Michael Madgwick. Although he stated he would only take the role for this competition only, as he'd much rather get into action with his very own Davenport Dockers, he did set out some terms and conditions that they found reasonable and thus they got the job. The only real changes were Francisco Solano being replaced as a fourth line left-winger by Kiko Carpio due to the former's retirement from international ice hockey, with Adrian Backer (who had played at the 15th WJHC) brought in as a scratch to fill the void.

It probably helped that Madgwick had a couple of plans of his own. First of all, he wanted to address an obvious issue that had plagued the team last time. My inevitable bugbear, the defence. They had allowed at least two goals per game. Sure the ice conditions in Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland seemed to be a bit too slippery but even so the Ice-a-phants' defence seemed to have moments where they completely dropped the puck. Such as the 7-5 Ro16 win against Savojarna where they could've easily have left out three or four of those goals. A couple of the goals they had allowed against Tralfamdore could've been left out by a much more solid defence. And he still think there should've been one other person by the Elejamian net to stop that second Vanorian goal that lead to the Calcuttas winning the match via a 3-2 penalty shoot-out. He did offer his opinions on a phone-in radio show following that last match, although fortunately no bad blood happened between him and Alex; the latter was stepping down anyway, Michael gave his opinions in a respectful way and mentioned some positives that happened during that run, and Alex even stated on social media that he admitted that there were some good points in there. Michael's proposal? Playing a more defensive game, even if it means the offence will suffer just a fraction.

And the second plan was to address the aging core. Out of the 26 members of the squad, eleven were at least 30 years of age. Normally that wouldn't be a bad thing, although Lupe was careening towards retirement age, Ethan Swinburne looked like he should start making plans of what to do when he hangs up his skates and there were two groupings made up of 30+-year-olds (defensive pairing three and forward line three). In a small bit of relief, all three goalies were under 30 although since Bejarano will be reaching that mark this season it's just a matter of who'll take his spot when he decides he doesn't want to play anymore. It wasn't that he had a problem with older players, far from it, but it would mean that there would probably be some big gaps that'd need filling with talent. Fortunately, while he wouldn't stick around to remedy this issue, he did organise a trio of friendly matches against the Junior Ice-a-phants to not only get the senior team warmed up but also hopefully get some younger players to bond with the older ones. The seniors won the first match in Davenport 6-2, the juniors won the second match in Coventry 3-1 and the third game went in Rosetta went into overtime but a quick snap shot from Stacy Saunders seventeen seconds in helped seal the win for his side.

With all of that satisfied, it was time to jet off to their destination. However, this tournament would be a little bit different. There wasn't one host. There weren't two hosts. There weren't three or four. There were FIVE hosts, all located in Novapax. Three of the locations were places that Elejamians were familiar with; Mercedini was a team they had played in the past and Darkmania and Britonisea had competed alongside them at the WorldVision Song Contest. Strayan Rus seems somewhat familiar although if there is no correlation with the more familiar StrayaRoos then it could just be a red herring. Only Kalmarlund, where their group games would be played, was a complete mystery, although since the sport has a bit of a history in the nation the Ice-a-phants would at least have an idea of how things would go down in their group. Especially since they were the first opponents in Group G. But what about the others? What were the general thoughts on them?

  • Serdtgyu: An easy one-and-done to go into the bye. Not much needs to be said here.
  • Kelssek: They're a fairly decent team. Not one of the best out there but they can still hold their own. Granted last time they went out 7-5 to Mercedini and, the time before that, they finished fifth in their group. However, in the 43rd edition, they finished second on their group and made it to the quarter-finals on home ice before being bested 6-3 by Mercedini. Was that high point simply a solid core working together with some good coaching or was it merely a fluke backed up by a wind of homegrown support? Either way, best not to underestimate them.
  • The Jovannic: In their last tournament, they won only one game in regulation, 4-2 against the Ice Cat Things of Vilita and Turori. They also got OT wins against Sredjnaci on the opening day and Delaclava later on, 2-1 for the former and 3-2 in both the box score and the shoot-out against Delaclava. Apart from that, they lost all of their games and finished near-bottom. Not to be underestimated either but since they always came across as a perennial jobber and by this point a spot in the next round would've been given to the Ice-a-phants a bit of complacency would be alright.

Overall, a fairly easy group, with their main opponents not really being much of a threat. And in a tournament where, this time, it would be group leaders making it out while runners-up would hope they had a good enough record to move on, it meant they would be facing little to no problems at all. That didn't mean they had to be complacent but it did mean that they could goof off from time to time. It also helped that all of their games would be in Lindborg, so travel fatigue wouldn't be a massive issue that'd plague them.

As for the other hosts? Mercedini were in Group A where they were not only the favourites but were also in the same situation as Elejamie, where their nearest rivals were still not a super-strong side; they had to contend with Vilita and turori, the Canadian Dominian and a couple of newcomers in Kimi-Suomi and Depivik. Britonisea had an uphill battle in Group C where they would take on Græntfjall, Banija, Atheara and a fellow unranked team in Khardsland. The Strayan Rus down in Group E were fortunate enough to be in the rankings but they too face stronger opposition in Nova Anglicana and Eshialand, an equal fight in Lorenthia and a possible easy win against the Independent Scottish Republics. And finally in Group I Darkmania, despite supposedly having a decent history of ice hockey, enter this tournament relative unknowns and thus will have to take on reigning champions Gyatso-kai, a fairly decent Abanhfleft team who'll push them to a few of their limits and a couple of games against the Squornshelan Remnant States and Magnecia that could be breathers if their opponents make enough mistakes.

Back to Coach Michael Madgwick now. He had finally formalised a game plan and had gone over it with his players countless times. He even gave a brief refresher once they were all kitted up, purely as a reminder. Sure it was against a debuting team but you can never be too careful. Once everyone was on the right page and everyone was ready, they lined up and waited for the signal. When it was given, both sets of players skated onto the ice and started to warm themselves up for the match ahead. Michael Eduardo and new assistant coach George Lincoln (who had served as a player under Michael for many tournaments) headed towards the bench and got themselves ready. They were calm and professional and clearly looking forward for the match ahead. The EIHB, on the other hand, were still in the rut mentioned earlier but fortunately they came up with a plan to help with finding a more permanent manager:

"Throw a dart and, if it lands somewhere good, contact their governing body."

WCOH 46 Roster

Squornshelan Remnant States
World Cup of Hockey 46 Roster

Ice Hockey is the second-most popular team sport in the SRS. The Confederacy has not participated in the past two editions of the World Cup of Hockey due to the inability of the players’ union and league to agree on the terms of a season break that would allow players to attend, but has enjoyed good success in AOHC tournaments during that time. The implication of partiality on the part of the SHL in finding a way to fit regional tournaments into their schedule but not the World Cup has been the topic of much discussion, but is perhaps finally at rest with the team’s return to the World Cup of Hockey. They will do so considered very much a long shot by WCoH rankings, but also as reigning AOHC champions. The same roster that recently hoisted that trophy will return, and also features several veteran players who were on the WCoH 43 roster.
