Faroleran talent the key to destroying Romsten
No fewer than one and a half goals (one goal and one assist) were assisted by Faroleran players in Farfadillis win against Romsten

Almost crumbling under the pressure of a potential group stage AOCAF Cup exit at home, Lele Manguele did what had to be done and fielded one more Faroleran for the game against Romsten. Yonatoño de la Garza was given the go-ahead while the Rulandese Tôsgo Alxíkí sat things out. Defigueroa, Chayra and de la Garza—the three Farolerans taking the pitch—were crucial, helping round out a win after a rather unnecessary Edmün Çídh hat-trick.

It is fair to say the elder Çídh's hat-trick was mostly a result of Faroleran excellence. The striker scored the first was off a corner kick, which was headed towards the back post by Chayra; an unmarked Edmün Çídh then needed only head it in. As for the second goal, yes, the Valanora-based striker made short work of the Romsteni defense by dribbling past three players in an instant, before somewhat expertly firing past the Romsteni goalkeeper, but none of that would've been possible if Chayra hadn't made a vital interception thirty seconds earlier to get the ball back in la Vherderoja's possession.

The third goal was mostly down to the brilliance of de la Garza. As the Romsteni tried to plug their leaks but still not punt the ball up the pitch, it was the Faroleran young star who covered a lot of ground and relentlessly pressed the Romsteni players into making a mistake. Their centerback then passed to Röémün Çídh, who uncharacteristically sent Edmün Çídh through on goal. The Rulandese was then tripped up because he kind of did well dribbling past the keeper. He was then unfairly handed the penalty kick because he was on a hat-trick, and buried it.

This all happened within the first twenty minutes of the match. Perhaps not fully satisfied with the Rulandese striker's performance, Lele Manguele subbed him off during half time, although at a later press conference he'd say he was "obviously resting him since he's a key piece of this team and we were never going to lose that game from 3-0 up," surely succumbing to the grasp Ruland has on sports media. Nobody can ever criticize a Rulandese player!

With Edmün and three other Rulandese players off the pitch, it was finally time for la Vherderoja to shine, and shine they did: they scored two more goals, and accrued a total of no fewer than five shots on goal against the formidable Romsten. A very good cross from Kolejes Marajis found de la Garza's head in the sixty-eighth minute. The header was fantastically well-placed, but the Romsteni goalkeeper nonetheless expertly predicted de la Garza's intentions to trick him by aiming straight for his hands. Nonetheless, de la Garza's header was far too powerful for the goalkeeper to hold onto the ball, and de la Garza managed to score on the rebound.

Finally, in the eighty-eighth minute, showing that it's not just Farolerans who are being unfairly deemed to be worse than their Rulandese counterparts, the Szoirsian Eötrenois Rigozsoldos scored with a curling effort from the edge of the box. Farfadillis were never in danger at any point in the match, and easily could've won by a larger margin, especially with fewer Rulandese players on the pitch.

The man of the match award unfairly went to Edmün Çídh even though he only played half the match. This journalist believes it should've instead gone to Yonatoño de la Garza for the wonderful display of talent he put on or, if not him, Rogerio Defigueroa, for keeping a clean sheet. If not him, then Chayra was part of the defense that allowed zero shots on goal!

.:: Closed Session of The Senate, Liangzhonghai Complex, Zhongyang District, Republic City ::.
0745 hours, 4 August 2022.3

The Senate Session had been going for about an hour, and already Avatar Aang – who had dispensed with his usual flowing orange and yellow robes today and instead had gone for a more reserved black and gray traditional suit – was seeing why he should have checked with the Senate first before jumping in with the Council of Five. Luckily for him, the Constitution allowed for him to deploy any and all military assets without restriction and engage in any operation for a period of up to 45 days without prior approval of the Senate, the Ministry for Defence, or even the Central Military Commission. However, in all of his years as Avatar, never once had he called a meeting of the Council of Five without prior consent from the Senate.

And now, here was Speaker Shionoya just letting loose with her frustration…

“To think that our Avatar,” Ruth Shionoya, in her seventh term as Speaker of the Senate, leaned onto the podium at the center of the room, her face flush with anger, ”Would simply mobilise, not only a fleet of battleships, but also suggest the deployment of two units of our Army into some fellow AO nation is just…”

She paused, and the space was filled by the Sergeant-at-Arms – a grizzled man by the name of Võ Lành Xuân hailing from the Foggy Swamp Tribe in the south – who held his staff into the air before slamming it down on a steel gong that hung from his position. The room turned towards him, and Shionoya was the last to look.

”It would be well-advised for the Speaker to refrain from such comments when in the Senate.”

Võ was a respected elder of the Liangzhonghai Complex; having served nearly-forty years in the Grand Army before being selected to this position at the start of Aang’s tenure, Võ was no pushover. He had been listening to the Speaker’s tirade for the last twenty minutes, and to allow such disrespect to continue was not something he would do. As Aang stood – it was customary for the Avatar to order the Sergeant-at-Arms to ‘stand down’ whenever these little decorum breaks would occur – he held out a single hand, and Võ stepped down with a flourish of his staff.

”Right Honourable Speaker,” Aang spoke, the microphone in his chest turning on a split second before he spoke from his seat. ”I can assure you, this mobilization was not done without any forethought or planning. I simply did not wake up and decide to risk war with the nations of the multi-verse.”

“Your Holiness, if I may just,”
Shionoya began to speak again, keeping her eye on Võ as she turned to face the Avatar. ”I, and those of the caucus we have formed, am simply trying to understand why we are getting involved in the affairs of another AO nation.”

“Because if we allow this to go unmentioned, it will be us next,”
Aang said pointing to Shionoya. ”If we allow some foreign entity to come into our region and simply enforce whatever laws they deem ‘just’ as retribution, who is to say some extremist nation decides that Avatarism is a blight onto the multi-verse and must be erased?”

Shionoy looked back to Aang, and sighed in exasperation. “That is…”

“Exactly what will happen.”
a voice boomed from below the podium on which Shionoya stood. Aang looked, and immediately recognized the uniform of Lieutenant General Tang Tor’audhr. The dark greens of his service dress and the brass buttons brought a sense of vintage to him, and Tang motioned to turn on his microphone.

”To think for one moment that our regional security is not threatened by Graintfjall, would be absurd. If we allow one rogue nation to simply deploy a warfleet and we do not match their forces, as well as prepare our own, than we are inviting every rogue nation to do the same.”

As Tang continued on, Aang looked down to the tablet on his chair. A simple chain of words flashed across it, before the screen faded.

FAFO

.:: Somewhere in Jabal Akhdar::.
0748 hours Coordinated Avatarian Time, 04 August 2022.3

”Message sent,” the young man sitting in the corner of the room said. He looked to the tablet, watching the encryption program cycle through a series of numbers and letters, all while keeping his back to the wall. Across from him, another man with an incredibly similar face looked precariously out the window of the hotel – I can hardly pronounce the name, let alone pretend to understand… I’m not the linguist here – clutching the Mk57 in his hand.

”Alright. Now we just have to wait for the response,” the second man spoke, his voice eerily similar to the first. ”Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later.”

“Can’t believe we’re here…”

“And we had to take three planes, a ferry, and crossed the border on foot with only our sidearms and attempt to blend.”

“That’s what we do. EIF goes from Point A to Point E to Point R and then to Point B”
the second man laughed as he closed the blinds and walked towards the refrigerator. Opening the door, he sighed before grabbing a bottle of water and shutting the door. EIF – Early Insertion Forces – were a team of special operation soldiers who were the advanced team for any unit operating in perceivably hostile territory. These two troopers – and the other two who were outside of the room on a simple recon around the area of the hotel. They had been here already two days, and so far as they could tell, they hadn’t drawn any attention from the locals. Sure, they looked similar to one another, but thanks to the selection of unit, all four troopers were from different lines so they looked no more similar than brothers. Three of them were fluent in the local dialect, while the fourth was along for the ride as ‘protection’.

“So how much longer do you think?”

“Oh… not long at all.”

How Are We Still Alive? (AOCAF Edition)

Postby Kimi-Suomi » Sat Aug 06, 2022 3:59 pm

Kimi-Suomi entered the AOCAF 67 knockout rounds as the only undefeated side left. How did that happen? Kukaan vittu ei tiennyt. This team has been nothing but brilliant from the very start, taking on all those who were in their path and suddenly beating them all like they were a team ranked at least 60 places higher than they currently were. It certainly felt weird to see a team from the Frozen Kingdom do so well in a competition as prestigious as the AOCAF, but that didn't mean anyone who supported the Huuhkajat was complaining at all - in fact, it was quite the opposite. Of course, there are those who are wondering when the magic will fall to the curbside and die, but everyone was certainly in agreement that this form would be enjoyed for as long as possible. Esko Laaksonen certainly had the Huuhkajat clicking, but greater tests were expected to follow.

Our Round of 16 test would come against an AOCAF debutant from the Kanadan Dominio - the Canadian Dominion, the Goose managed by Nolan Cairns who certainly have worked their way to make it into this position to face us here in Valanora. But the game that these two sides would play, with a spot at a debut AOCAF Quarterfinal at stake, would be considered an instant classic as both sides decided to leave nothing behind and go for broke. This game would be exhausting to even watch, let alone play, and each half would receive goals from each side that would certainly tell a story. Kimin Armeija would take the lead through Valtteri Nordström in the 23rd, only for Jeremiah Symons to equalise in the 43rd. Then, Symond managed to flip the game on its head in the 56th to give the Goose a historic lead...but that only lasted a few minutes before Jyrki Bottas headed past Killian Davidson to tie it up once more. Both Davidson and Kauko Loukamaa would end up busy for the rest of the game, stuck in an endless cycle of saving shot after shot after shot...until the clock ran out. Extra time beckoned, 30 extra minutes to try and find a decisive final moment, and in the end, the 104th minute would find that eventual winner...and it came from the bench, Mika Noronen heading home the winner. Kimi-Suomi was moving on. Kimi-Suomi was still alive. Kimi-Suomi was a Quarterfinal team. Mitä vittua on tekeillä?!

The magical ride carries on to a date with one of the big boys of the region...some cats that go by the name of Qasden. The Vans are managed by Icarus Darsten and will certainly hope to make light work of us on route to a potentially massive game in the semis, with either Valanora or Banija awaiting the victor. You don't need to tell anyone how big this game is...and we expect nothing less from this championship. Uhkeat soturimme jatkavat...valmiina kuolemaan meidän kaikkien puolesta.
NOSTA KUIN HUUHKAJAT!

In many countries, their wizarding community is integrated among the general population- hiding in plain slight, as one might call it. Wizards and witches can be drawn from all walks of life, and come from all over their respective countries, living apart geographically although remaining tight-knit in both bond and lineage.

The above of course, does not apply in Banija.

The magical community in Banija consists entirely of members of the Mukegara Tribe. With magic being a (mostly) hereditary trait, it was something that members of this tribe were born with, and have passed on, generation to generation. They have a reputation of a tribe that keeps to themselves, and are located remotely, within the mountains on the eastern border of Banija and Geisenfred(although all on the Banijan side). While, of course, they look like Banijans(all of them are racially black), they are very distinct and separate from the rest of the country.

The Mukegara have protected constitutional status in Banija as a self-governing tribe, the only one in the country, which entitles them to have their own constituency for the Banijan Lukiiko(Parliament). They are also distinct from the average Banijan in many ways. First, Mormonism, the dominant religion among Banijans, simply does not exist for the Mukegara, as missionaries were generally treated with hostility. Secondly, language. While Banijans generally speak Olusanke and English, the Mukegara, except for the ruling class does not speak Olusanke. They speak mostly English and Olugara, the local language. They also have a constitutional right to self-isolation, which is regularly invoked when Banija hosts major sporting tournaments, to completely close off their lands to outsiders. Of course, many Banijans think they are simply backwards and crazy, and leave them alone. The existence of their magic within the country is completely unknown- only the Kabaka(King) of Banija is made aware. They, of course, hold strictly to the International Statute of Secrecy, for fear that they would almost certainly suffer reprisals.

Historically, the Mukegara were almost completely conquered during the Unification Wars, and monarch after Monarch tried to get the Mukegara to submit. The Mukegara were almost wiped out, and shortly before Quebecois colonization, the then Paramount Chief, nearly 200 years ago, sent out explorers to see if there were other magical communities that could assist them. While they ended up reaching an agreement with Banijan authorities which led to their current constitutional situation, they were able to stumble upon wizards in Starblaydia, almost by accident. From then on, the Mukegara established strong ties with the Starblaydian wizarding community that are still strong today.

The Mukegara are led by the Paramount Chief, which is the hereditary leader of the Mukegara Tribe. The Mukegara have a two-tiered education system. One, consisting of ‘muggle education’, has children attend one of two elementary schools on tribal land, ran and operated by tribal schools. In those schools, they receive education in mostly muggle subjects. This is to comply with government regulation and the Banijan constitutional right to education, while maintaining their secrecy. Children attend these schools from age 6-10.

Very recently, the Paramount Chief issued major reforms to the Mukegara education system, due to overcrowding at schools. Before the age 11 school year, all students participate in a placement exam. The top 10 scoring students every year are selected to attend Percyvale Academy in Starblaydia- the goal of basically all Mukegara parents is to send their students to Percyvale Academy. The exam is extremely competitive, and graduation from Percyvale for a member of the Mukegara is a ticket to becoming a lifetime member of the tribe's elite. This has been happening for almost 200 years pursuant an agreement between Percyvale Academy and the Mukegara Tribe. What happens to the rest, is where the major changes have been implemented. They used to all attend Nangobo, but now there has been a change. For age 11-13, all students attend the newly built Lashigo for their first three years of magical education. The Paramount Chief recently created a second school, for the last four years of wizarding education. For years 4-7 of magical education, Half the students go to Nangobo School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, while the other half attend the newly built Kitante(chee-tahn-tey) School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,

It is the Mukegara's connections to Starblaydia that introduced the tribe to the sport of Quidditch. The sport became highly popular at Nangobo, and of course, quickly became the tribe's most popular wizarding sport. In the 8th Quidditch World Cup, they came flying out of the gates(literally), and won their first 9 games on Starblaydian soil, before falling in the tournament final to the Sherpa Empire. They look to ascend to those heights again in the 10th edition of the Quidditch World Cup.

Notes:
- We almost always play a 1-3-1 zone defense. It works well with this team, which has lots of size, and is getting faster, especially at guard. Situationally, we will switch to man to man or a box and 1 if the other team's star player is hot, but the 1-3-1 is the base.
- This team is built very different from past teams. They space the floor much better, they have spread the floor with a lot of players who can hit jumpers, especially three pointers. They also like to play fast.
- This team will run at almost any chance they get. While rebounding, especially on defense, is the team's weakest link, when they do get a rebound, they are able to push the ball, and so quickly.
- For the group stages, this team's rotation runs 12 deep, as Laboto will do his best to get all 12 players into the game for every single group stage game. However, they will almost certainly shorten the rotation to 8-9 players come the knockout stages. The rotation shrinks in the knockout stages, and in knockout games and other must wins, Lavaga is willing to play his two young star players(Khoza and Abonyo) extremely heavy minutes (35+).

'Scoring in Bunches- Banija put 5 past Demot to advance to a massive quarterfinal tilt against host nation, Valanora, at AOCAF 67

Image
Banijan players celebrate a goal in the opening round of the knockout stages of AOCAF 67

SABINAL, THE ETERNAL EMPIRE- Banija was playing in the Round of 16, once again, at Atlantian Oceania's regional championships. Banija's first entry into this tournament was AOCAF 55, back when we had first moved to Atlantian Oceania for sporting purposes, from the then defunct United Valhaven. We stunned everyone by making the knockout stages at our maiden tournament at the regional championships, going all the way to the quarterfinals. And at every AOCAF since then, we have managed to get out of group play, and reach the knockout stages. From AOCAFs 55-66, our first 12 editions in this tournament, we were a perfect 12/12 at making the knockout stages. And now? We are 13/13.

Not quite as impressive as Baker Park's World Cup Qualification streak, but impressive in its own right, surely?

We had our 13th consecutive knockout stage qualification at this tournament, when we beat both Mlima Kijani and Sea Dome on Matchdays 2 and 3 of this tournament, after limping out to a draw to open the cycle. Our opponent? One of those AO teams that has both a regional and a world title to their name(of which there are shockingly a lot of in this tournament- 7!), so we know they can play. They are nowhere near their heyday, of course, not even being a WCC nation at this point, but there certainly is talent. Their club teams occasionally going on sizzling AOCL runs, so they've got the talent. "I know that Demot, on their day, is capable of beating almost anybody at this tournament." Said Banijan manager Pam Scott. "We've got to go out with focused energy, if we want to take them down. This is their World Cup, they are going to be extra motivated- if we don't come out with the intensity to match, we're gonna be up for a long afternoon."

Unfortunately for the Banijans, we did not come out with the intensity that we needed. It showed on a cross when our 35 year old captain, Demba Kinteh, was beaten by Gabriel Baldwin, the veteran Demot striker, who hung in the air and slammed one home, with his head, for an early lead for Demot. The first 20 minutes, the Banijans were actually getting the runaround from their opponents. Getting beat, particularly, in the midfield, where we were extra reliant on our 37 year old goalkeeper, Wanda Kouyaté, to make save after save. Pam Scott knew that this was a knockout stage match- do or die, win or go home. She wasn't going to hold back. Making a double substitution, stunningly, down 1-0 after just 25 minutes.

"We needed a change of pace, a change of tactics." Pam Scott told reporters at halftime. "Things simply were not working. I wasn't going to double down on what my eyes were telling me- where I never want to be, is in a position where I'm simply too late to make the required changes." Idi Mboge came off for the 20 year old Aquila Hongo in central midfield, while Idi Dabo came off for center back Demba Kouyaté. Both players a little less adept at the actual defending part, but much better in possession. And that was the jolt that this Banijan team needed. There is world-class talent on this team, and sometimes they need a little bit of something to get going.. That something came, and Demba Kouyaté, in particularly, was playing some great balls.

He played a great ball from the back, in the 34th minute, to start a counter-attack, sending Sarafina Ikpeazu free up the wing. With Banijans flying forward, Demot were caught flat footed, as the counter attack was on. A brilliant cross from the star winger found Kausu Dione on the backpost, who headed home powerfully. Just like that, he was yelling in celebration, and the game was tied at 1 goal a piece. But it wouldn't take long for us to score again. Just 4 minutes later, we were able to earn a corner kick, after a Gereh Kama shot from about 10 yards out was saved, at point blank range, by Demot's goalkeeper. The ball was whipped in on the corner kick, and it was Wesoloski-Okafor, at the front post, who would head the ball home. Another cross, another header, another goal. 2-1 to Banija, 38 minutes in.

The real controversy came in the 1st minute (and only) minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half. A great through ball by Gereh Kama had released Wesoloski-Okafor, who was going in towards goal. The half-Quebecois striker started to move his foot to strike, as Demot center back Jacqueline Juárez slid in from behind, and Wesoloski-Okafor went down. It was a very tight call, as the referee himself looked hesitant to make the call. While taking harsh criticisms from neutrals and Demot fans after the match, the penalty was given. Pam Scott looked to Gereh Kama to take this penalty, and our #10 struck beautifully, burying the ball into the corner. A soft penalty? Yes. But 3 goals in the last 15 minutes of the half had completely turned the game around, as the Kadongo Kamu led 3-1 at halftime.

Pam Scott's Kadongo Kamu squad simply had too much firepower for Demot to overcome. While Glen López came off the bench to bend in a free kick in the 62nd minute and make it a one goal game, Banija was simply too adept on the counter-attack to allow Demot to stay in the match. Dembo Savaneh came off the bench to score on a counter-attack in the 71st minute to make it 4-2, while Kausu Dione got his second goal in the 77th minute to make the score 5-2. 21 year old youngster Carl Mason would score the final goal of the match, but for Demot. That meant the final score was 5-3, and the Banijans were back into the quarterfinals- our 6th quarterfinal appearance in our last 7 editions of this tournament.

"We responded well when Demot swung at us with everything they had." Pam Scott told reporters. "There are things we can take away from this game- both good and bad. This team certainly isn't a finished project. But we thoroughly believe that we are among that upper echelon." The Banijans will have a chance to prove her right or wrong in our next math. Who do we got? None other than Valanora. The 5 time world champions, 7 time regional champions, most famous team in international football, and the hosts of this damn tournament. They are the tournament's favorites, and for good reason.

"If we want to be the best, we have to beat the best." Said the team captain, Demba Kinteh- showing absolutely no fear. "There's no such thing as an 'ideal' matchup once you get this deep into a major tournament. Everybody's good, everybody's talented- Valanora has, of course, the ultimate pedigree, but we thoroughly believe in ourselves. We will not roll over for the home town team- we will be ready for their challenge." In this titanic clash, who will triumph at the White Fortress and successfully claim their place in the semifinal?

Other News
- The AOlympics organization are running miniature events, a few events alongside the AOCAFs. The AOBCs, the AOHC, and SwimAO are all running alongside the AOCAFs, in other countries. "Banija carried ourselves spectacularly at the last full AOlympics." Said the Olympic Committtee Chair, Patrick Zervos. "We hope that we can achieve similar success on a wide scale here at the regional levels as well. Banija's athletes are chomping at the bit to represent our country at an event that represents our strong regional unity."

OOC Note: With quidditch being magical in Banija, there is no recognition from muggle publications of AOWL

Mukegara Brief- AOWL coming back, with non-magical teams allowed to compete

AO ISLE- Atlantian Oceania's witches and wizards have decided to bring back the AOWL, to compete alongside various muggle sports at the AOlympics. The Mukegara Chief, while critical of the body's decision to allow non-magical competitors, expressed his excitement on behalf of the Mukegara. "The Mukegara people are quidditch mad, and we love the opportunity to play the sport on a national team level. While we understand this is a magical sport, we fully intend to show the entire region- magical and muggle alike- who the real top quidditch team in this region is." Rumor has it that the team is training overtime, as the chief is expected to be 'extremely pissed off' if they lose to a non-magical opponent at the AOWL again.

I beg leave of the Chair to proceed under the 10 minute Rule?"
Mr Speaker: "Without Objection, so ordered"
Prime Minister: "The Minister of State for Defense returned from the two day meeting of the Regional Defense Organization's defense ministers late last night and forwarded to me the minutes of what was discussed along with what plans have been agreed to by the military leadership, which includes our own General McKinney, Commander of the National Guard.
We--and I speak of our regional allies--demand that the Græntfjall Second Fleet withdraw from their current position. There does seem to be, Mr Speaker, a general lack of understanding in Rushmore that there are Multiversal Maritime Conventions and Laws and that their regional navies are not exempt from them.
One only has to look back at the Nyowani Kitara situation, where a nation with no maritime rights in the immediate area took it upon themselves to unilaterally blockade access to ports in a separate sovereign nation. (disruption)
Prime Minister Michaelsdóttir and I have spoken over the telephone in the past, she could've called me or any number of leaders in the region to ask for our help. Perhaps she believes that Atlantian Oceania is leaderless, is decentralized to a point where there is no real consensus among our nations.

If she thought that, she has made a grave miscalculation. (disruption)
We also declare that we will enforce a no fly zone over the entire Vilitan Cove and western Calania. There are nations in this region that are dedicated to non aggression and non intervention that are prepared to forgo that foreign policy to defend Jabal Akhdar. From far and wide the support comes: Pluvia and the Saxean Isles, Gyatso-kai, Squornshelous, Busoga Islands, Banija, Milchama.

I will finish on this point Mr Speaker, the nations of this region abhor the terrorist threat, we are united in our revulsion and our compassion for the innocent lives lost in Græntfjall and more recently in Mlima Kijani. We would rather use the resources we are marshalling to fight these groups that believe they are acting in the name of Islam, profaning the teaching of the Prophet, than threatening a nation which a large number of this region's countries consider a friend. (disruption) Disengage and allow us to help you achieve justice rather than act unilaterally, which is vigilantism. I cede the balance of my time Mr Speaker (disruption)
Mr Speaker: Order.

Cordia Over Hapilopper 3-2 To Make First AOCAF Quarterfinals

FARFADILLIS- Amid a crisis of interregional scale that has seen the members of AORDO band together and commit troops to defend one of their own, many of those same nations have cheered for their football teams as they battle it out in the AOCAF, the regional championships of Atlantian Oceania and called the "hardest tournament to win" by some. Those nations include ourselves, and our national team has been on quite a roll in this tournament, going undefeated through the three matches of a group stage despite many a close call, including a massive 2-1 upset of Farfadillis after Anton Osterholt scored one of the biggest goals in Cordian history in the closing minutes. Last night, the Cordians faced a true elimination game for the first time in the tournament, against a very good Hapilopper side that was decidedly favored to win. And they certainly looked like it early on, as the highly aggressive Hapiloppians, fresh off qualifying for their first World Cup, gave the Cordians a small taste of it with a goal three minutes into play, as Maverick King sent a cross in to Peter Robson, who sent a powerful header into the back of the net to send the Hapiloppian contingent into wild cheers.

As the match continued, the Hapiloppians continued to dominate play and many of their fans didn't touch their seats for the first twenty minutes as their side sent shot after shot on goal, and it appeared inevitable that the North Stars would find themselves in a 2-goal hole. The few Cordian shots were desperate attempts from well outside. In the 22nd minute, Redvin Chase took another of these, and everyone watching figured it for another save for Hapilopper keeper Billy Solomon. Not to be; an unexpectedly tricky shot, it slipped past Solomon's hands and into the goal, causing a shocked Chase to celebrate just his third goal for the North Stars. That goal brought the Cordians back to life, and the ensuing back-and-forth kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, with either side standing up in expectation of a goal almost every minute. In such an opened-up match, the very aggressive Hapiloppians had the advantage over the largely balanced North Stars, but the Cordian side held their own and continued to deliver solid chances. As the end of the half approached, though, Hapilopper marched down the field with ease with a couple of nice passing plays and found themselves on an extended attack with four minutes of added time. A shot from Toby Bryson set Kristin Bergstrin diving for the ball and making the save, only to give up a corner. Midfielder Parker Mathis of Hapilopper took the set piece, which soared straight into the middle of the melee in front of the goal. Bergstrin couldn't take the risk of going for the ball, and James Huddleston took possession, sending the ball into the top-left corner to give Hapilopper the 2-1 lead and a confidence boost heading into the half.

While Hapilopper held the advantage going into the half, it was all Cordia coming out of it. A Gunnvor Nieminen shot two minutes into the second half hit the crossbar, setting the Cordian fans to groaning. Nieminen has cooled off a bit after a red-hot start to the tournament for the youngster who didn't even make the WCQs pool last cycle, but has continued to start and has been a big contributor. A few minutes later, Nicholas Eriksen tried to one-tap a pass from Nieminen into an open net but ended up sending the ball just left of the post. The whole sequence had the Hapiloppians running around and out of position, and it ended with Sebastian Voll receiving a pass from Erik Pratt, corralling it, and sending an absolute laser beyond Solomon's arms and into the netting to knot the score at two apiece. The Hapiloppians, seemingly slow right after the half, began to recover after that goal and found themselves beginning to control the game again, opening it up against the North Stars' will and generating chances like Robson's 61st-minute shot, barely blocked by Redvin Chase, who managed to avoid fouling Robson by the skin on his teeth, diving out of the way so as to avoid delivering a first-class bodycheck like something you might see in a hockey game.

But it wasn't long before Hapilopper's aggressive game came back to haunt them. In the 76th minute, Sebastian Voll pressed high on Jerold Dickman and somehow managed to block Dickman's pass attempt. Rasmus Karlssen lived up to his reputation and read the play perfectly as Voll and Anton Osterholt sprinted forward with the ball, putting himself into a high-man position as the strikers approached the net. As the other Hapiloppian center-back, Ace Boone, moved to block the inevitable shot from Voll, Voll took a step back and sent a pass to an unguarded Karlssen, who wasted no time in blasting a shot just inside the right post to send the Cordian supporters into wild cheers. Though it would be tested, that score would ultimately hold due to some timely saves from Kristin Bergstrin and very good play from the Cordian back line.

Next up for the North Stars is something of a familiar face - Vilita & Turori. Fans will remember the Turori half of the team from when the Eels and North Stars met in the World Cup Playoffs - a meeting that began very well for the Cordians but went downhill from there. This isn't much of a revenge trip, though. There were no fights, no incidents, and very little trash talk in those matches and the Turori media - much to their credit - was very positive about the Cordians' accomplishments and their play. Still, it would be a small measure of revenge and an impressive accomplishment for the Cordians to defeat the V-T combined squad, which would make their third victory over World Cup-qualified sides in the AOCAF, Farfadillis and Hapilopper being the other two. But that won't be an easy task, with the combined team's 4-0 win over Oontaz demonstrating emphatically that they are very much on form right now.

We said it before Farfadillis and we'll say it again. Burn those rubber chickens like there's no tomorrow.

AOCAF 67 Part 4

Familiarity Breeds Contempt

Death. Taxes. The Confederacy meeting up with Sarzonia in the AOCAF Cup knockouts. Some things are just guaranteed. For the third straight cycle, the Stars will play Black-and-Reds in a loser-goes-home match, and we hope that for the third straight cycle it will be the Sarzonians who suffer that misfortune.

In the Confederacy's AOCAF debut in the sixty-fifth edition, they got past the Stars by a score of three to two in the quarterfinals. In the following edition, after limping through the group stage with three draws, the Black-and-Reds matched an in-form Stars side three goals for three through full time, and took the win 3-2 in a rather sloppy penalty shootout before bowing out the next round against Farfadillis. This time around, the Stars have taken care of the Vherderoja in the round of sixteen, and will have the chance to take another crack at what has been their nemesis of late in the Black-and-Reds. In this case, both teams are on fairly good form, having taken top spot in their respective groups with seven points each. Sarzonia, though, have been very much more the attacking juggernaut, piling up 11 goals in their four matches to date, while the Black-and-Reds are far at the other end of the spectrum with just six scored, but only two yet conceded. For the Confederates, it will be a matter of execution and discipline, being certain not to overlook or underestimate a side they've beaten twice in recent memory.

In more sobering news, government spokespeople report today that the naval task force sent by President Dosun to the Vilitan Cove has arrived on station. This force, consisting of the fleet carrier Vigilant, guided missile cruisers Syneca and Sjerezo, as well as assorted smaller escorting vessels, are to be placed under AORDO command for the duration of the current crisis involving Græntfjall's incursion into Atlantian Oceania after the Steinaux Attack. Public Pressure has been growing on Dosun to offer more specific details on how she and AORDO intend to hold the perpetrators of those attacks and their supporters in Jabal Akhdar responsible, however, as AORDO appears to close ranks to protect an Islamist state that has shown no inclination as of yet to cooperate with any judicial processes, neither those of Græntfjall nor of any entity within the region. It's certainly troubling, seeing that Jabal Akhdar's government is, to put it bluntly, a brutally authoritarian kleptocratic state in which the royal family are propped up in obscene wealth by the in some cases literally enslavement of a vast working class. Blind and unquestioning alliance with such a government goes against all Confederate values of equality, economic equity, and the right to self-determination of all peoples. We must hope and trust then, that the presence of the Vigilant and her retinue in the area will be used to good effect, not only to discourage Græntfjall's military adventurism, but also to bring appropriate pressure to bear on the Akhdari government to effect positive and meaningful change in that nation, to the benefit of all its people.

The championship team that occasioned so much comment at the last AOWL championship returns, heavily modified military drones and all. Much to the chagrin of some in the magical community, this rather motley assortment of non-magical players stormed through the competition, beating magical and mundane teams en route to the win, and looking damn good doing it, if Santraginus street fashion is to your taste. While showy, colorful robes are the uniform of the day in the sport, this side compete in a rather monochromatic uniform of black trousers and coats with white accents. They more than make up for their lack of fabric-based flair with sheet variety of hair colors and exposed metal of prostheses.

In the time since their debut, however, the gyrocycles designed for the team by seeker Berta Koller and backup keeper Jan Engwall-Kozlov have spread a bit beyond their once quite limited existence. Much to the chagrin of the Squornshelan military, which inherited the rights to the Imperium's military technology, the pair licensed their creation to AO's own mega-conglomerate, Tropicorp. One anticipates that the corporate state will outfit its own team with a related design. Such designs might also be available more widely should Tropicorp choose to introduce them to the general market.

As for the team and their playstyle, the star player is without question Koller, whose small frame, youthful face, and pastel pink braids belie a ferocious competitive spirit. Her prosthetic left hand can be fired outward and retracted on a ten foot long chain, an ability which led to a number of clutch wins for the team last time out, as well as several complaints from the opposition on grounds of fairness. It remains to be seen whether AOWL officials will permit her to make use of its full capabilities again. The other one to watch is definitely beater Zhanna Beck, who somehow hasn't ended up called before a judge despite swirling rumors of involvement in organized crime prior to her big break. Her hair changes colors with the phases of the moon, seemingly, but on constant is her terrific strength with a beater's bat and the triumphant smirk she favors opponents with after unseating them.

Nothing comes easy, that lesson had to be learned the hard way for the Marauders with the start of the AOCAF and continues now even into the knockouts. Despite eventually winning the group as most expected of the team, they were not gifted a friendly tie in the first knockout round, facing the regional heavyweights of the Commonwealth of Baker Park. The Commonwealth, as well as the cove nations of Vilita and Turori, present the strongest challenges to the hegemony of footballing talent belonging to the southwest of the region with the likes of the Eternal Empire, Banija, and Farfadillis. They have earned their standing inside the region with victories and titles that can not be taken away from them, as well as smooth hosting of not only a recent AOCAF tournament but also of the World Cup as well. They have shown their might and have done so quite well, making it very much a clash of titans for the Marauders having to go up against them in the first knockout round, with it a match that seems more fitting for a quarterfinal or semifinal tie.

The team was set to travel to Longview, playing in the majestic Angelotic Temple, one of the nicer stadiums in the nation but does not often get used by the national team outside of when it is hosting a tournament. In addition to being one of the nicest looking stadiums in the nation, it is also the third largest, sitting at seventy-one thousand all seating capacity. Every single one of those seats were filled by the time the two nations were getting ready for kickoff, a large amount of the crowd there to cheer on the host nation. There was small pockets however in the stands where groups of fans from the Commonwealth had gotten tickets, the small percentage making their voices heard and being seen with a large flag of the Commonwealth being displayed during the national anthem. The Bees were going to look to be the pride of the nation for at least ninety minutes, if not longer if they could stand in the way of a Marauders team that was looking to showcase its renewed sense of pride after the early humbling at the start of the tournament.

The weight of the occasion might have weighed heavily on a Marauders side that was fresh off a trip into the deeper rounds of the World Cup to be so closely followed by the regional championship. While Didrik Gjedrem had been making tactical substitutions to try and rest the legs and minds of his players, the early part of the match definitely seemed like the Marauders were running on exhausted legs and tired minds. The Commonwealth attack was finding gaps between the midfield and defense without much resistance and Isak Helland had to come to the rescue on three occasions in the first half hour against a very lethal Baker Park attacking force. That sustained pressure would provide dividends though as in the thirty-ninth minute Ayana West found the opening goal, bending in a shot just inside the left half of the box that Helland was not able to paw over the crossbar. It was a blow as it ruined the plans that Didrik had for his halftime talk as well as the adjustments that he had been looking to pursue to try and tilt the game in the Marauders' favor.

Whatever the manager did say to the side though, it seemed to take well as the team that started the second half looked completely different from the one that had taken the field in the first half. Where they had looked tired, they looked energized, perhaps spurred on by Riemann making way for Selim Estrada Barrientos. The young United midfielder looked completely comfortable on the pitch and was connecting well with the rest of the team, particularly Hawk in the attacking midfield position. It was one of these connections that sprung the equalizer, as Barrientos fed Hawk a through ball past the Baker Park back line and Hawk feigned a shot before passing to Pánfilo Veliz, who converted into the mostly empty net. It sent the crowd wild and with fourteen minutes to play, it looked like the Marauders were going to find a winner. Into extra time the two teams went and the Marauders continued to press. The Baker Park defense finally broke in the hundred and ninth minute, Lothas Ludwig showing the ice in his veins to calmly convert the chance through a mess of bodies.

That goal secured the win and advancement, where an all too familiar foe will be waiting, with it being Banija. The two sides are also slated to meet in the Olympic Semifinals, meaning that the already well acquainted sides will be all that much more familiar. The Marauders have the advantage of the home stadium, traveling to the White Fortress in Gladerial. The Banija side thinks the Marauders are pompous and overconfident, that they are going to take the Marauders semifinal place from them. It looks to be a match on a knife's edge in terms of intensity, an intensity that the side will be used to having had to win those last two matches to advance. Will it be enough to overcome the obvious talent in the Banija squad or will their boasts turn out to be correct?

4-Star Eel-Cat Things Take Down the Sultanate

Rülândéá Çölíséá, Rülândéá, Fárfâdíllís :: A tightly contested final matchday of Group F play in Farfadillis could have seen the Eel-Cat Things fail to advance entirely if they could not get a result against the Busoga Islands. Instead, a lone goal in the second half was the difference and Vilita and Turori would instead take top spot in the group, sending the Busoga Islands crashing out of the competition and taking a top seed with them into the Round fof 16.

The Eel-Cat Things opponent for the first knockout round matchup would be the Sultanate of Oontaz who out-gunned Pluvia and the Saxean Isles on the final matchday to knock out Group G's highest scoring team from the competition.

While they have met in other competitions and compete regularly in the AOCAR Stock Car Series, there is little history between Vilita & Turori and the Sultanate of Oontaz meeting in what was undoubtedly the most critical matchup ever played between the two nations. The most recent heads up meeting between the two sides came during the Group Stage of AOCAF 65 when Zelkki Milake Jr. and the Eel-Cat Things would shutout the Sultante and a goal from Naraiza Ruaplal was enough for Vilita and Turori to secure a 1-0 victory.

This time there would be no Milake available for Vilita and Turori as the Eastal Lunar FC netminder was in Electrum contesting the Olympic Summer Games for the Vilitan Union. Instead it would be Turori National Team goalkeeper Derizi Amatopa with the gloves for Vilita and Turori and Amatopa would pick up right where Milake had left off two cycles prior.

Ultimately Amatopa only had so much to do in the back as Vilita and Turori came out strong against the Sultanate, taking the lead just 11 minutes in when the Tlikara's teamed up to open the scoring with Treasvo finishing off a clever back heel from sibling Kunaro near the top of the box. The move caught Oontaznik goalkeeper Aziz Mekhloufi off guard and the 31 year old was unable to recover as Treasvo's shot found the back of the net. The Lions of Sand and Sea would claw back into the match creating some chances as the first half went on but had the wind taken out of their sails as the half time approached with Eura based attacker Clarana Refiami doubling the Eel-Cat Things lead just moments before the half time whistle blew.

Vilita and Turori's second goal was a major momentum pegger for the Eel-Cat Things and the Sultanate was never fully able to recover. After bringing in fresh legs from Planio'o Nrujsa and Cuoabaza Orani'aoa in the second half, Vilita and Turori would get additional goals from Kunara Tlikara and Sami Samii'i to waltz into the distance with a 4-0 dismantling of the Lions, putting an end to the green and white presence in the AOCAF Cup and advancing the Eel-Cat Things to a Quarter Final matchup with the Cordian Isles. It will be the second time in AOCAF History that Vilita and Turori have played back-to-back games against the Sultantae of Oontaz and The Cordian Isles - but the first time having done so in the knockout rounds. The only previous meeting between Vilita and Turori and The Cordian Isles came during Cordia's debut AOCAF 65 cycle where the Eel-Cat Things defeated the North Stars by a 4-2 scoreline with goals from Tyoasi Klipark, Limu Katarakhna,Treasvo Tlikara and Lentali Purama.

╣HOME Locker Room, Longhouse Arena, Isarendal, Arendalle╠
21:40 local time, 7 August 2022

Sonja Birta’barnr stood in the middle of the locker room of the capital city’s hockey team, the Isarendal Jarls, and took a deep breath. As one of the select players who had played overseas in the Avatarian Hockey League in Gyatso-kai, they had a unique perspective on what it meant to play hockey before massive crowds. In the home league, the Félag-keisararíkin í íshokkí or FKI, no arena hosted more than 8,000 fans, with the largest being the one here in the capital. Sonja had never dreamed they would have played in front of near-20,000 fans, let alone fight for a spot on one of the most prestigious teams in the AHL, appearing in seventeen games so far in Season 3.

They could still remember a year ago when the FKI had announced a joint program with the AHL to create a player exchange. Known as the Arendalle-Avatarian Player Exchange, or AAPE, it saw twenty Avatarian players sent to Arendalle, and a corresponding twenty players from FKI. The competitions and scouting for AAPE was intense, and at twenty-seven-years-of-age, they had been worried that they would have simply been too old to compete with younger, more hungry players. They dropped nearly ten kilos before packing on an additional twelve of muscle, as well as spending nearly every training session with AHL-caliber players to sharpen their skills and bring themselves up to speed.

And thanks to Hed Torvik… I got Ishii’s scouts to notice me.

Now, on the eve of Arendalle’s first ever multi-verse tournament, Sonja could not help but wonder how the other players on the team would handle the pressure of the multi-verse. They thought back to their first game – the season opener against the Kyrimorut Ramikade – and how, to symbolize the beginning of the AAPE, Sonya faced off against another Arendallic player for the first puck drop. Significantly younger than Sonja, the usual defenceman Valdis Snorri’barnr was brought into the center; nineteen and almost 20 kilos heavier and a solid thirty centimeters taller, Sonja felt like a dwarf before a jotun, and when they pushed into Valdis for control of the puck, they were grateful for all those face-off practices against players significantly larger in Itakawai.

Still… We leave for the AOHC tomorrow. Are we ready?

Sonja had no answer for the question in their mind, and knew they would feel better about this game after a good night’s rest.

All they had to do was get back to the hotel.

St. Kanye's quidditch team shocked the world, wizarding and otherwise, by making it all the way to the previous AOlympics' final, despite none of the players having an ounce of magic in them. They eventually bowed to their fellow technology-using squad from the Squornshelan Remnant States, but they still gained lots of supporters among those who believe that quidditch should be open to everyone.... not to mention a lot of hate from wizard purists who still believe themselves superior.

Final Four Finns...What The Fuck?!

Postby Kimi-Suomi » Mon Aug 08, 2022 1:59 pm

Kimi-Suomi is in the Quarterfinal stage of AOCAF 67. No, nobody can still believe it. Olemme varmaan massiivisia? To see us, a nation which isn't even on the official AO map yet, make it all the way to the Quarters of one of the toughest regionals out there has to be something that nobody expected...not even the team themselves. Even Esko Laaksonen himself couldn't quite believe just how far this undefeated Huuhkajat had gone and now, many were just watching in awe and hoping that maybe the best ride of our lives can have one more stop to make. Things were never easy but so far, we've managed to shine through all comers and now...nobody knew where the breaks were. Would it come now? Or is there still one more game we can play?

Our opponents for this quite unexpected contest would be an established AOCAF side in the form of the Vans of Qasden, managed by Icarus Darsten in an attacking 4-4-2 that was certainly looking to make use of the xG stat no matter what. This contest was framed by some by a simple quote - "Surely, the Huuhkajat can't win this time right? Right?" Some were certainly expecting this to be the final hurrah before WC92 preparations can begin, but others still believed...believed that this ride wasn't over just yet and that Kimin Armeija still had something in the tank. One of them would be right and it would be the one a lot of people in Atlantiksen Oseania would not have expected at all.

Qasden's high attack certainly worked in the early going and they would take the lead in the 23rd, Jaylyn Bone slotting past Kauko Loukamaa to give the Blue-Reds the expected advantage, but if there is anything this Huuhkajat side has been known for over the past few weeks, is that conceding first is not a death sentence at all. Kimi Airo made sure that fact was hammered home before the break, his header past Tommy Waluigi enough to level things up before the most important changing room talk of their lives so far. Then came on the Tuominens, Annina and Maria, as well as Mika Noronen, the youthful midfield options looking to take advantage of any holes in Qasden's back line...and it worked brilliantly. Annina found a way past Aristide Quickley in order to square up Noronen for the go-ahead goal in the 66th and when Maria found Jyrki Bottas in the box in the 78th, there was no mistaking where that ball was going. The Vans tried and tried and tried to work their way back into this contest, but our back 5 shut that shit down until the final whistle allowed everyone the chance to scream and shout and cry and hug and pour out every emotion we can hide behind our cold Nordic exterior. Kimi-Suomi, in only its 3rd ever AOCAF, had made it to the Final 4 itself. Maailma on virallisesti tullut hulluksi.

No matter what happens now, this squad had made everyone back in the tundra proud and ramped up the hype for what could come right to the sky. We did say that we wanted our team to grow into being one respected by many...now, we have a date with Banija in an AOCAF Semifinal. Banija. Just saying that name can send chills down the spines of teams like ours. If Qasden was an AOCAF big boy, then the Kadongo Kamu is a fucking giant...one managed by Pamela Scott and her attacking 3-4-1-2 formation that can spell death for many a foe. A former champion of both this event and the WC itself, Banija is filled with absolute titans of the sport...Wanda Kouyaté, Tairu Conateh, Kausu Dione, etc. We may be facing a literal football god...but like the ancient heroes of old, we cannot give up hope at all. Ei ole väliä, elämmekö vai kuolemme, taistelemme pienestä nurkastamme, joka vihdoin tuodaan valoon!

From the AP (Akhdari Press) wire:

JABAL AKHDAR CITY—Crown Prince Siddeeqi Ghaazi el-Masri has praised the region of Atlantian Oceania for joining together in defending the Emirate from the “brutalizing onslaught of Græntfjaller neocolonialists”. “Knowing that our regionmates stand in solidarity with us at this, our hour of need, has moved the Crown Prince beyond words,” said Mus’ab Nawaar el-Mustafa, Information Minister of the Emirate. “We are truly proving to the world that Atlantian Oceania stands 100% in support of Jabal Akhdar.”

Rear Admiral Pat Boyce readied himself for the video call with the Prime Minister, checking his tie and his hair; he'd been selected as Commander of the Task Force that would be en route to Vilita within the next 12 hours--ahead of 22 other flag officers, including the Commanders of the Naval Service of the Commonwealth's two operational groups--on the expressed recommendation of Admiral William Sanderson, the Chief of Naval Operations.

Boyce was the most recently promoted Admiral in the NSC--he'd been Commanding Officer on NSC Commonwealth for 3 years and found the offer of a star in exchange for another five year commitment, to bring his career to 25 years hard to turn down--but he understood exactly the type of operation he was being asked to lead.

"Don't we look spiffy Pat? Future reference, if I ask to talk, I'm not that concerned how you're dressed." The Prime Minister laughed before adding, "as long as you are dressed in some way."

"Understood, Prime Minister. Thank you for trusting me with this assignment."
"That's Sandy's call, I've never questioned his judgement and I'm sure that you'll prove you know what is necessary. Which is where we'll pick up the business portion of the call."

SOF have identified the positions they want to concentrate on, based on the current force numbers they are projecting from other AORDO allies. They've sent two OPLANS from Casebook Brown for revision, and NSC Fleet have formed the Task Force they will be deploying within 48 hours--Prince Frederick, Commonwealth, Falcon, Agamemnon, Persephone, Juliana, Black Hawk, Reformation, and Isabelle."

SOF is the Special Operations Force, one of the three regiments that comprise the military element of the National Guard of the Commonwealth; the most elite unit in the Armed Forces, it draws upon specially trained members from the Army, Navy and Air Force to fill out the compliment of six companies of 300-500 troops.
Case Book BROWN is an integrated war plan developed for action in desert areas, one of seven classified contingency scenarios that can be adapted for use based on immediate need; Case Books are comprised of various OPLANS (Operations Plans) that can be combined utilizing all military elements available at a given time.
The Task Force assembled from across the NSC Battle Groups represent the full capability of the Navy's strength--Prince Frederick (A-144), an aircraft carrier with 24 advanced fighter jets and 4 STOL support fighters; Commonwealth (A-143) and Falcon (A-135), amphibious warfare ships each with 12 STOL fighters and 8 close support attack helicopters; Agamemnon (A-140) and Persephone (A-142), guided missile destroyers each with 18 cruise missiles and four 135mm guns; Juliana (B-049), Black Hawk (B-042) and Reformation (B-044), fast attack frigates each with 8 cruise missiles and 4 90mm guns; and Isabelle (B-050), a guided missile submarine.

The specifics of rules of engagement, deployment of the task force, mission objectives and coordination & cooperation with the other allied AORDO naval and air units operating in the Viltan Cove were laid out for Boyce to understand. He came away impressed with Rebecca Schoenlein's attention to detail and understanding of the situation.

"Thank you ma'am. I understand the brief. I'll not let you down."
"Anytime--day or night--you feel the need to speak to me directly, do not think twice about signaling MoD. I know Sandy and Fleet Command, and the regional command will do everything possible to assist you, but my door, so to speak, is always open."

As expected, the Yeezie hoopsters didn't light the AOBC on fire, winning only one of their three group stage games. Their first outing saw them demolish Gyatso-kai 93-57 on the strength of C.J. Carter's 27 points and Jareth Livingston's double double of 13 points and as many rebounds. However, they were themselves blown out in the next two, first by gridiron rivals Sarzonia, 94-74, and then by the basketball-playing horses of Equestria, 81-58. This was, however, enough for them to earn a shot at the playoffs, but it would not be without difficulty as they will be playing the team from Oontaz at the Gorilla's Lair in Aksum, Banija. "All I can say is that we'll be trying our best and hoping for a good result," said head coach Victor McLain.

The Yeezie delegation in the AOWL proved more successful than their AOBC brethren. They fared the opposite, dropping their opening matchup (against the Canadian Dominion, 370-250) before racking up back to back victories (a close 330-200 result against Tropicorp in which seeker Jen Holland caught the snitch less than a foot above the ground, and then a 260-120 revenge win, fueled by six goals from Juliana Medina, over the Squornshelan team that denied them the AOWL crown in the last AOlympics). The striker unit-wearing St. Kanye squad will be facing Qasden in the Round of Twelve; the winner here would advance against the defending champs. "I really felt like we grew as a squad since the previous edition," spoke burly beater Dwight Edwards, the Surge's captain. "We're eager for glory, of course, but we would have to give it our all in order to take down everyone else in our path."

Pamela Scott, during the halftime period of extra time

Pam Scott was looking at her team- run ragged, tired.

Her highly decorated gaolkeeper was doing whatever she could to hold onto her position as the Banijan #1, and in frankness, she was proving her worth. While the defense wasn't providing her much help, she had stood on her head today, making a number of important saves to keep Banija in the game. But she still was 37. Asking her to win a penalty shootout, at this age, was going to be a tall order.

Pamela Scott knew that she needed to go for the win in this extra time period. Both teams were wearing down- the dog days of summer, deep into extra time in a major tournament quarterfinal. She needed something to change things up. She looked at her 34 year old #9, Kausu Dione. So long the clutch man for Banija, he was beat as well. Kamara Touré, who played his club football in this country, was fresh. Had been warming up on the sideline.

"Kamara! Kausu!" She barked. "Come here." They both walked up to her. "Kausu, you've had a fantastic game. But your day- your day is done. We need to find some fresh legs to bring on the pitch." He nodded, and then simply sat down on the ground, stretching out his legs. He could still play, of course, but aging particularly took a toll on you in those extra, international matches.

"Kamara, you're going to be the freshest man on the pitch." She told the other striker. "Just be like an energizer bunny for the next 15 minutes. We're going to run a higher press for this period, Sergius Atieno is coming onto the pitch as well. They are gassed- we've got to run roughshod over them." Kamara nodded, and then Pam Scott walked over to her young attacking midfielder to tell him the same thing. She thought she saw an opportunity- she was going to sell out to win this damn thing right here and now...

Banijans take down Valanora at the White Fortress in extra time, advance to the AOCAF 67 Semifinals

Banijan players celebrate Sergius Atieno's match winning goal in extra time

GLADERIAL, THE ETERNAL EMPIRE- The tie of the round. Banija v. Valanora, both Southwestern rivals in this competitive region. You can't win an AOCAF without going up against the very best of the world- whether it's Valanora, or Farfadillis, or whoever. With the Banijans drawing Valanora on their home soil, it was a matchup that was never going to be easy. "The White Fortress is an aptly named venue for this matchup." Said Banijan starter Gereh Kama. "It's going to be a fortress- a wall of Vanorian fans, cheering their team on, hoping they can will their team to the semifinal. They won this tournament just two cycles ago- why not add yet another major trophy to their collection?"

While the first half in this one was rather dull, with not many opportunities created by either side (and none put away), the second half was explosive and exciting. "I won't lie, after that first half- I thought this game was destined to be grinded away, 0-0, straight towards a penalty shootout." Said Banijan starting central midfielder, Idi Mboge. "Both teams were organized, playing low block defense, and neither team was taking much risk. We needed something to get a spark going, and once the game got good, it got good." What player would you expect to be at the center of things? None other than Laborious Hawk.

A brilliant individual move in the 52nd minute. He received the ball a few yards into the Banijan half, which wasn't surprising. What was surprising, is what he did with the ball once he got it. He beat a pair of our midfielders on the dribble, with a brilliant turn and stepover, and suddenly, Valanora had numbers. He kept his head up, and saw Indra Söderström blitzing down the left sideline. He played a brilliant ball down to Indra, which put the Banijans running and suddenly, the Vanorians had numbers. Indra put a cross on the ground to Lothas Ludwig, who was at point blank range. Wanda Kouyaté made a brilliant save at close range, but Laborious Hawk was closing in with the rebound. He put the rebound into the back of the net, and 52 minutes on, the White Fortress was exploding, as Valanora drew first blood.

But this Banijan team kept their heads together. The game could've gotten away from them- but that is the opposite of what happened. Pam Scott changed both central midfielders to get some more energy in the center of the pitch, and have a bit more of an attacking focus. Momodou Jassey and Aquila Hongo were playing brilliantly, passing the ball and, most importantly, closing down on the Vanorians. Their pressing forced an errant pass out of the back from Valanora in the 63rd minute, and the Banijans were ready. Hongo stole the ball in the final third, took one touch, and played a brilliant through ball to Sarafina Ikpeazu. She simply laid it back across the center of the pitch, and Kausu Dione was there to finish with authority. 1-1.

The 3,000 or so travelling fans were going crazy- but the stadium, in general, was silent. We had some momentum, and we were going to go for it here. And it wouldn't be long until we scored again. Some sustained pressure from our squad, where Lolong Bokate ended up getting the ball at the edge of the box. He passed it to Gereh Kama in the center of the pitch, who gave him a brilliant small floating ball, just between his defender and the keeper. Bokate got there first, and struck the volley first time, with far too much pace for the keeper to have a chance. A far post finish in the 69th minute, and in 6 minutes, we had absolutely turned the game on its head- from 1-0 down to 2-1 up.

Valanora would equalize, however, off of a free kick. Laborious Hawk was brought down at the corner of the 18, a great place to whip in a wicked ball. And when you've got Laborious Hawk taking the free kick, well- it might be a rough time for you. He bent it brilliant towards the back post, and Lothas Ludwig was ready. The striker headed the ball into the net, and in the 87th minute, this see-saw of a game was tied at 2. Adin Wasawo went into the game for Idi Dabo at center back, and the two teams went at it in extra time. The first half of extra time was dominated by Valanora, but Banijan defending was enough.

Pam Scott made a pair of attacking substitutions at the halfway point of extra time, bringing on Sergius Atieno and Kamara Touré for Gereh Kama and Kausu Dione, respectively. Those are two clinicians from the spot- so definitely high risk. But it was in doubt that Banija's defense could withstand the onslaught much longer- try to alleviate her defenders by taking pressure off, and maybe getting a goal of their own. And a winner was coming. Those last two substitutions were blitzing through a tired Valanora defense. Look at the runs. Demba Kinteh held the ball in a seemingly unthreatening position, just barely behind the halfway line in his own half.

But then, Sergius Atieno and Kamara Touré made some great runs. Atieno, from his 10 spot up the pitch, while Wesoloski-Okafor came towards the ball. Kamara Touré made a diagonal run, in the opposite direction, towards the goal. Pulling their defense apart in all directions, and Kinteh played a brilliant long ball. Atieno received the ball in the box, beat a defender on the dribble, and then finished upper 90, near post. The crowd was stunned into silence as he ran to celebrate with the small group of Banijans in the front row.

And that was the final score- Banija 3, Valanora 2. "What a game, what a tournament, what an iconic goal." Pam Scott told reporters. "Atieno's goal will be remembered for a long time- my oh my, what a finish. And in this moment, to put us into a semifinal? Let's go. All credit to Valanora- they are one of the historic powers of Atlantian Oceania, historic nations of this sport. They've got a brilliant team. To beat them on their home soil- it is a feat that few accomplish. What a match by our team. No matter what they threw at us, we were ready. Emotionally draining, exhausting. And now we're in a semifinal."

Banija's opponent will be Kimi-Suomi. They have exploded onto the scene out of nowhere, from being completely unheralded to being the only team to win all 5 games in route to the semifinals. They've been exciting and dominant, and on a historic run. An easy opponent for Banija to look past- although we should do anything but. "Look, stories like their stories, are the beauty of the AOCAFs." Said Demba Kinteh, the veteran center back. "They've clearly shown their abilities, as they have won all their group stage matches, as well as reached this semifinal. They aren't pretenders- they are for real. It will be our goal to turn the clock back to Midnight on their run."

All the pressure is on the Kadongo Kamu, however- we will open as favorites. Think about the incentives for Kimi-Suomi. This is already quite a memorable run, one that their fans won't forget for a long time. But if they beat us? It'll go from 'memorable' to 'historic'. We don't want to be the crowning achievement on their historic run. Pam Scott will have her charges ready for one hell of a semifinal match, with a chance to play for the regional trophy on the line.

AOlympics News
- Banija, once again, hosted a significant portion of AOBC IX, with three groups playing all of their games in Banija, including our own group. Banija continued its record of never losing an AOBC group stage match, with the men's basketball team improving to 18-0 in all-time group stage matchups at the AOBC. The Lions downed
Jabal Akhdar and the Crystal Empire in close contests, before blowing out Mlima Kijani by 38 to close out group play. Banijan basketball has earned a bye from the first round, although it is unclear who our next opponent will be.
- In ice hockey, the team fell to 1-2. Banija has never been known for our competitiveness on the ice, and that continues in regional play, as Banijan ice hockey tries to grow ourselves into a power- with them facing additional pressure since they are the last link for us to win that coveted grand slam. A win over Quebec was cancelled out by a loss to Arendale, as we continue to struggle.
- We took one medal from the four swim competitions to open the SwimAO tournament, with Amadi Orji earning a silver medal in the men's 100m freestyle swim.

Mukegara Brief- AOWL in full swing, as Banija win their group at the region's quidditch tournament

AO ISLE- At the second AOWL competition, the organizers split the competition into two camps- magical and non-magical. Obviously, Banija are in the magical camp. And the competition is going well, so far. All three group stage matches that we played were close- and decided, of course, by the seeker. We caught the snitch in the opening and closing matches of the group stages, to defeat Milchama and Delaclava. Despite those matches bookending a loss to Vilita & Turori, we were still able to achieve first place in the group anyways, as the only team who won two games.

That gives the squad a bye from the first round of the playoffs, and we'll go straight into the magical semifinals, to take on the winner of Gyatso-kai v. Milchama.
