Part 3 – Same Team, Different Directions.

Augustine Lorenzo Vinto Silas Imparato stood 651.99 centimetres tall, dressed nicely in a smartly casual navy blue suit with olive green accents. Beside him stood Angeline Joyce Estefania Mik Nogueira, 692.53 centimeters tall, and also dressed in a navy blue blouse and skirt, but with cyan accents here and there. Some would call them a couple but for the Valentians, they are not in any particular romantic relationship as far as they are concerned. They see each other as a close friend to rely on, and they are simply here for the Rally racing, not so much of anything else dubious in particular. As per their recent actions, they got the offer from ENSADRINK WSR Tarogama Mazaregi, and it was definitely their first choice from the very get-go, overlooking any other teams regardless of performance. With the contracts signed, Angeline gave a cheerful remark to the staff members, “Thank you very much for the offer, we really appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts! As you may want to know a little bit about us, we have definitely driven and co-driven for your team for the first season of this wonderful rally sports, and we are glad that you are able to give us the offer. We Valentians are a little bit like that – give us the offer for our very first foray, and we will stick with you for the subsequent seasons, and we will definitely try our best!” Augustine then nodded, adding in more words and input of his own, “You may have heard of the likes of Adriana and Angela, for example. They first got their experience on WGPC and WGP2 via Fireline and Eminent respectively, and from what they have told us and from what we have seen, they have been with them ever since. It will be very unlikely that they will change teams, and we intend to do the same for ENSADRINK as well. We will definitely try our best, and again, grazie!”

The ENSADRINK WSR Tarogama Mazaregi team possibly have had doubts about how in the world the Valentians were going to fit in their car. Which, of course, the Valentians got it covered. Using techno-magical abilities, they’re able to shrink themselves down to much more manageable sizes, with Augustine at 195.8 cm and Angeline at 208.0 cm after shrinking down by 3.33 times. They got into the car, did a bit of trying here and there, including going for a practice runs that are up and coming. For all intents and purpose, it would have taken them a bit of time to get used to the car once again, and it showed with the first pre-season test whereby the Valentians have nothing to write home about. It would be the second pre-season test in Hjortborg Rallysprint, when it started raining and Augustine and Angeline surprisingly got a crowning moment of awesome. The practice session was not as good, but the qualifications was when they picked up the pace, dominating the field with having the fastest timings for all the three quarters. “Well well, how about that!” Augustine remarked, patting Angeline on the back as they watched the scores and looked around at the rest of the teams. The rain was getting a bit heavy, and everyone else seemed to be taking shelter or going back into their own cars. Augustine and Angeline, however, looked at one another as they smiled sweetly, and then back to the scoreboard, “It’s amazing, we have never done this before! I mean, I know it’s just qualifications, but… it’s still something, right?” Angeline asked, to which Augustine nodded, “Oh, it totally is, of course. The actual races are just around the corner, and it would seem as if the two Valentians are ready to take it on, consoling and reassuring each other as they then walked towards their car, drenched but still very elated.

Of course, what happened in the next races would have been something else entirely – a rather average finish, along with the DNF that happened at the 2nd Special Stage of Wakkanai Winter Classic. It was a little too early for a DNF, they thought to themselves, sitting down and having a break while they mull over what they should do next. Already with the penalty that have been mounted on them for the DNF, they have to think of a miracle to happen for the next race before they screwed the pooch on this winter course. “I should have practice a little bit more for the winter conditions,” Augustine remarked to Angeline, who was sitting cross-legged on a log near the car as she was flipping through the notes. Augustine went on, “Maybe I underestimated how difficult they really are. Still, at least we didn’t crash that badly, so that’s good. Just need to kink the car’s body a little, then we are good to go. I hope.”

Wakanai WInter Classic
Wakanai, Quebec and Shingoryeo
SS3

The wind howls ever more bitterly as the last of the twilight tucks under the horizon, hidden by the dense forests of Wakanai. The boxer engine in Axel's Skua burbles on idle, vibrating nervously while Henrik crouches around all four corners controlling the tire pressures, just before the start of stage 3. The cloud of exhaust vapor streaming from the rear of the car occludes the approaching sister car of Naomi, which announces its presence with the same meaty gurgle of the ART-4BST-2 engine. The lightpod on the bonnet of her car cuts through the plume of fog; the off-white rays of light bask Axel from the waist down as she comes to a squeaky halt.

To the media, his and Naomi's relationship was a close one, a mentor-apprentice affair: the acclaimed Hodori Rally champion teaching the young, inexperienced Togonistani the highs and lows of international motorsport.

In reality, it had been Henrik who'd exchanged the most words with their teammates, and even then, mostly with Heriko — who'd been the one to teach the Nykipik a few tricks he'd not picked up on even after years beside Axel. In spite of his brief moment of mellowness during season one, when he'd tried ― and perhaps succeeded ― in convincing Naomi she was worth her seat and her spot in the team, despite the pressure put on her by Marko and her own country's tabloids, the two had barely spoken a word since then. For his part, Axel had taken the off-season to retreat to Avisdesliggendevuoret, as he'd always done, only showing up at Lintulahti for testing, development, and the presentation of the Skua.

But as the gusts of wind grew harsher, and the clumps of snow from the towering tops of the trees fell towards and onto the roof of his car ― and the AP-Deritee of the peculiar duo from The Pearl Kingdom continued to pull away from Naomi and himself in second and third ― he decided an intel exchange could be on the cards.

As he appeared from behind the opaque smokescreen, Naomi opened her door and peeked out of the warmth of the Skua's cockpit. "Hey," Axel said loudly over the sounds of the engines. He checked his watch before continuing: just two minutes until he was due at the time control. "My car is feeling soft in the rear," he said, skipping the niceties. "I'm oversteering all the time." He paused; the fact of the matter simply was that Naomi, generally, was faster, and as he lay third behind her before the final stage, it still rang true. Surely, it wouldn't hurt to see what she had to say — especially not after she'd beat him at home again. "Any tips?"

⚠ NOVIKOV | SS3

Oh no! The world champion has stopped briefly 32km into the stage! He was too fast on a slow left-hander and buried his Skua in a snowbank. From the onboard it looks he has got going again, but he's dropped a lot of time. We'll see at the stage end if he keeps his podium position.

Snow rallies and Naomi were like raw meat and Togonistani vodka. Two things that shouldn't blend well, but for some reason, do. Last season, Naomi had her first ever snow rally in Græntfjall, and by a miracle, she won it. Big part in this had been played by Heriko, whose prior snow experience from being Södergren's co-driver in the past had allowed him to pass on some tricks to the young Togonistani. During off-season, the two also had a brief trip to Kalmarlund, where Naomi had polished her driving in snow even further by participating in a local rally. Thus, while her preparations for Wakanai still left a lot to be desired, with Heriko's guidance she had, so far, driven with relative confidence and managed to put down some competitive times.

However, what she was not prepared for was having Axel pull up alongside her and ask for tips after the stage. All this time, Naomi has seen him as a cold-blooded Abovian, a man of few words who knew all the ins and outs of the sport. Secretly, Naomi was looking up to him, she really did. Therefore, to have him come to her with a question like this, to actually ask her to help him... that made Naomi slightly blush. Not really knowing what to say, she gave a quick look at Heriko for help, but the latter was busy organizing his pacenotes and seemingly didn't pay any attention to the conversation. Tips, tips tips... Naomi scratched her nose and looked at Axel. ''Uh... take it easy on the braking into corners, play with your throttle more. That Skua seems to really hate slippery spots.'' Was that what Axel had been looking for? Naomi had no clue, but it was really the only advice she could give off the top of her head. It seemed that it had to do though, as the Abovian gave a nod before disappearing into the cold winter's night again.

Wakanai Winter Classic
SS3

Axel nods. "Hm," he murmurs, with a faint, lipless smile, as he rises to walk back to his car, where Henrik is waiting patiently in the cold. 'Play with your throttle more', he thinks, scoffing. No shit.

Maybe she's just not ready to share her setup secrets, then. Or maybe, she's just dumb.

Or maybe... she's just... naturally better than him.
Wakanai Winter Classic
SS7

Somehow, the gaps were extremely narrow by the final stage of the leg. The roads on day two had been just as horrifically treacherous as those on the previous day: tight, twisty, narrow, dark, slippery, and always hiding some "motherfucking fire breathing tiger or some shit", as he had put it to the media in the Friday cooldown. And yet, the gaps had not been as wide as on the opening day ― and the odds were no longer firmly in Suyauey's grasp. Seeing an opportunity to attack, Axel's drives on Saturday were exactly that: flat out; throwing caution to the wind.

Even then, not only had he not managed to beat Naomi again ― as he held a tightly-contested third behind Inyuseo and the leading Togonistani going into the final stage — but he'd done too much. A stray tiger sighting had already alarmed him halfway through the stage, but an overly ambitious entry into another tight corner, just like the one the day prior, had had far worse consequences. The front lip of his Skua dug into the snowbank as he nipped the apex just a tad too close, and the compacted snow sucked the car in instantly. It was a slow collision, but with far worse consequences: the bank covered a ditch, and as the car sunk deeper into the snow the front buried itself in the pillowy, frigid ice. The engine ground to a burbling halt as the dashboard lights flickered and the light from the lightpods was consumed by the darkness of the forest.

"Vittu," Axel hissed, in almost total silence, as a distant growl and a flash of orange light pulsed into the cockpit.

Suyauey and Yliande driving towards victory at Wakanai Winter Classic.

World Stage Rally Championship is at full go, with the second rally in this season's calendar being concluded by a surprise victory for AP-Dëritee WRT driver pairing of Suyauey and Yliande. The drivers from Pearl Kingdom were dominant throughout the first day, establishing a gap of 19.659 by the end of day one, ahead of Iskalbil-Ælund's Keretene and Karaka. While the Togonistani drivers managed to make up some lost ground during the second day, it was the final leg that settled Suyauey and Yliande as the undeniable rally winners, with 25.710 seconds separating them from the chasing Iskalbil-Ælund drivers who couldn't match their pace during the final day. With that result, Suyauey and Yliande earned both themselves as well as their team their first ever WSRC rally win. Keretene and Karaka of Iskalbil-Ælund WRT earned the second place, as well as their second podium of the season, while another AP-Dëritee WRT driver pairing of our very own Södergren and Jansson took the final step on the podium as the Kalmarlundian duo put on a steady drive and kept Watanabe/Hitchens of TGK-VK WRT comfortably behind.

Findus Petersen, team principal of AP-Dëritee WRT, said after the event that he is very pleased with the result. ''Suyauey and Yliande had a fantastic performance throughout the whole weekend. They showed incredible pace when it was needed and knew exactly how to keep a comfortable gap with the chasing pack. That was some smart driving they showed throughout the whole weekend. With Einar (Södergren) also taking his first WSRC podium, it was almost a perfect weekend for the team and some very good points.'' While AP-Dëritee WRT did get a good points haul this weekend, there still remains the question of what happened to Mëlander and Lösspeng. The Darkmanian driver pairing was, once again, struggling to match the pace of their teammates throughout the whole weekend, with their sub-par performance eventually culminating in a crash during the final leg, pushing them down to end up as the last driver pairing in classifications. ''Mëlander has suffered some bad luck during his first two events, but i'm more than sure he can turn it around soon. We're yet to see the best of him,'' Findus Petersen remained confident about the Darkmanian driver.

With that result, Keretene and Karaka have taken the lead in Drivers Championship, with the Togonistani driver pairing five points ahead of Suyauey and Yliande, with the third place currently held by Inyuseo and Mizeyuki of ENSADRINK WSR. Meanwhile, AP-Dëritee WRT has taken lead in the Teams Championship with Iskalbil-Ælund WRT staying close behind. WSRC shall continue this weekend, when the championship moves to Togonistan.

Rally Togonistan - General Information

The 16th annual edition of Rally Togonistan will be a run as a 4-day event, with Start Podium and Shakedown on Thursday evening, Rally Start on Friday morning and Finish on Sunday afternoon. The Rally HQ will be located in Metaviran Expo Hall and the Service Park in a large outdoor exhibition park right next to it. The Start and Finish Podium will also be located in the complex. The rally will consist of 26 Special Stages.

The official opening ceremony will start on Thursday evening with an opening concert on the Start Podium. During the 1h-long concert, a variety of artists from Togonistan will be performing on the main stage, such as Anahera, Pita Fanene, Claymore and rock band Angry Beavers. After the opening concert, drivers will drive through the start podium before heading on to the Shakedown.

Friday starts with Papanui stage right at the outskirts of Metavira. A 15.5 km long gravel road goes through farming fields at the outskirts of the city, ending up in the small village of Kalu. From there, drivers travel to second stage of Ararua, leading through some more countryside roads and going through various small farming villages. Afternoon starts with Awariki stage, which goes alongside a small river for halfway through the stage, eventually leading up to a bridge with road leading into the forest. 4th stage, Rotokawa, starts with a downhill gravel road leading down a forest valley, leading to a beautiful natural lake in the bottom with finish at the lakeside. Afternoon consists of driving through all the stages once more, with the final additional stage around the lake marking an end of the first day.

Saturday starts with Arapuni stage, which marks the start of a u-turn in the rally, where drivers must drive through a rocky uphill road that has become famous for being in relatively poor condition, often resulting in crashes for those too eager on the throttle. Following stage goes through a long Kairaki mountain road. A long twisty road going through mountains provides a picturesque view at rainforests down below. The day continues with Kirkiriroa stage, leading down a 14-km long downhill road and ending up at the bottom of the mountain. To add some contrast to the otherwise difficult day, the next stage, Mangamahu, is driven on flat surface parallel with a river flowing through the forest, before drivers start with a 22-km long Taitapu road going alongside the eastern Togonistani coast, allowing a nice view at the sea and the mighty coastal cliffs. The final stage of the day, Paeroa, goes through a long mountain pass with the road eventually leading back to the outskirts of Metavira, the host city of the rally. The final stage of the day, Harapaki, goes down a steep and narrow mountain road, marking an end to the more demanding portion of the rally.

The final day sees drivers go through Taitapu and Paeroa stages once more, before heading out to all-new Takonga stage, taking place in an old stone quarry with a road designed specifically for rallying. From there, drivers head on to Tira Pass, an old road leading through small rainforest at the outskirts of Metavira. Next stage, Awamate, takes place on some relatively safe countryside roads going through a few small villages before drivers head back to the quarry once more in order to drive through the road in reverse. The final stage of the rally will be driven on a flat road just outside the city, with the finish being just a few hundred meters away from Metaviran Expo Hall, which also acts as service park of the rally.

WSRC 2
Round 2
Wakanai Winter Classic
Wakanai, Quebec and Shingoryeo

"Ibland kan den här sporten bita dig i röven vid värsta möjliga tidpunkt." - Sometimes, this sport can bite you in the ass at the worst possible time. That was what Pehr Henrik Blomqvist said to the media after the late elimination from the Nordenflyg Rally Aboveland. Car #77, driven by Laila Raatikainen, crashed on the 6th stage before the end of the weekend - something that affected both of them immensely, Laila blaming herself and Pehr Henrik blasting mechanics for talking about a curse. It certainly was a wake-up call to the pain this sport can provide, but there was still plenty of time to make up ground in the standings...at least they had that, oikein? Oh, and new teammates as well. Two Aurunans, Kälö Aurinen and Zuiha Kailenta, who certainly had experience in this series before and were a good team to have in the 3rd Sport Mikuren car - now car #87. The warm "Täre!" was greeted with a warm "Hei!" and "Hallå" and with that, the unit was complete in time for Round 2.

Round 2 would be the Wakanai Winter Classic in Quebec and Shingoryeo, 10 long stages that were sure to test both a driver's endurance and their overall skills out on the snow. Of course, we had to start off with the Shakedown and things would get interesting almost immediately as Car #77 managed to do good enough...to start on pole. Yes, Car #77 managed to win a Shakedown in their 2nd weekend. No, they didn't quite understand it either. Cars #91 (Boludo/de FitzLawrence) and #76 (Södergren/Jansson) rounded out the Top 3 while Car #87 (Aurinen/Kailenta) would start 7th and #84 (Gallegos/Reotutar) in 9th.

Then came Day 1's action, 3 stages where 3 cars ended up having to take time penalties. Car #57 (Poldov/Ponomarjov) crashed on Stage 1 while both #16 (Imparato/Nogueira) and, yes, #77 both crashed on Stage 2. Car #44 (Suyauey/Yliande) would lead over #23 (Keretene/Karaka) by 19 seconds and #76 by 34. For Laila and Pehr Henrik, that crash did hurt...but not as much as last time. They would still have 2 full days to try and make the 6 minutes back up and if their teammates in the #84 could get into the points after crashing on day 1...then maybe the Kimi-Suomen duo could too.

So that was the plan heading into Stages 4-7 - survive and hope for chaos behind. They managed to be only a minute off the day's pace setters in Car #23 and behind them...it was indeed chaos. Car #46 (Mëlander/Lösspeng) fell on the first stage of the day, getting a 12-minute penalty in the process, while Car #1 (Novikov/Baardsen) ended up with 3 mins and Car #27 (Harcourt-Mauroy/d'Ombret) did make it to the end but not without trouble. All of that meant entering the final day, Car #44 led by 12 secs and Car #77 was only in 11th.

Then came day 3, where Stage 9 was just cancelled on safety grounds and the final order was set. Car #44 ended up winning the Rally by 13 seconds over #23 and by 34 over #4 (Hargis/Holstein). Sport Mikuren ended up with double points as #87 ended up 7th and #84 was 8th. #77 would slip off the pace, worst of everyone on the day, and would end up 13th at the end. A disappointing end to a hard rally...and now, they were the odd ones out.

Now it was Pehr Henrik's turn to feel bad. Did he do that by saying stuff about a curse? Did he bring bad luck to Laila and himself? Laila knew that things had to get better...but sometimes, that was hard to believe. The road was still long...but the pain was certainly making an impact on both of them now. Rally Togonistan is up next in Metavira, 26 stages of potential gravel hell. Can the Kimi-Suomen duo get on the board before their home rally? Kuka tietää tässä vaiheessa?

Wakkanai Winter Classic
Leg 3

After watching his performances in the previous season, one might think that Kälö might get carried by his teammates again but as he starts the third day of his first rally in WSRC2, placing fifth overall, thinks are looking up for him. Taking a quick break at the team's tent before the third leg starts and as Zuiha reviews her pace notes for the stages, the pair has some unexpected visitors arrive. As he takes his morning coffee, someone calls out for him and he already knew who it was based on the voice. He turns to the direction of the voice to see Laura Haukanna standing just outside of the tent and he is with... someone familiar. The boy introduces himself after noticing the puzzled look on Kälö's face as the pair enters the tent. "Hello again, I am Aiki Vorlen."

"Ahh, that kid Aiki!" Kälö exclaimed as he remembers the boy. "Why are you here with Laura?" He then asks.

"Well, Mikuren gave me a chance to drive something close to an ARC-spec car and I kinda want to see how things work at the highest level. So I asked to come with them during the events."

"Also, if you didn't know, we tested your cars in during the pre-season so I might have some input that helped you guys. I want to check how things are going while getting familiar with rally again. That means I'm coming with you guys for the duration of the season."

After getting the two to sit down with him, he continues their conversation. "Great timing. As of now, we're doing pretty well as you can see at the board. We're currently 5th overall coming into the third leg. Hopefully we'll stay there. Stages out there are treacherous as fuck. We lost a lot of time during the sixth or seventh stage yesterday with me going wide and nearly clipping a barrier."

"Still, you guys are doing great. You're keeping up with the rest."

"Yeah." He then turns to the young Vorlen. "Alright kid, you're the only one who decided to follow your father into rallying, right?"

This caught Aiki off-guard as he fumbles his answer at first. "Y-yeah! My brother Harri didn't want to do it."

"That was a bit disappointing." Laura says. "It meant that the Vorlen name returned late in the ARC."

"There's nothing we could do about it, it was his choice after all."

"At least it's finally back, I'm looking forward in competing against you sometime in the future."

As Kälö continues talking to Laura and Aiki, Zuiha walks up to him to start discussing about the third leg of the rally. Deep into their discussion, she reminds him about their start after their teammate, Gallegos. Kälö first asks. "The following stages are gravel, right?" To which Zuiha affirms with a nod. After giving it a quick thought, Kälö stands up and heads over to the Fleftic pair as Zuiha just watches him. Laura and Aiki look at Zuiha, confused, and she just shrugs, letting Kälö do whatever he wants.

"Hey hey!" He greets both of them after coming up to their side of the tent and he immediately starts. "We're going into gravel now and I don't know how well you do on gravel and how you drive. I'll just give you a few tips that should benefit both of us." Then the goes on telling him a few gravel tips that he learned from his time in Aurun folk racing, from Könä, and his experience the previous season with the car.

"...with the Kana's balance, you can easily push all the way through the fast stages with whatever setup you have, just don't too far with an understeery one as the car doesn't like to understeer that much and if it does, just blip the throttle if you have the drive bias to the rear."

He continues on with every tip he knows that should help out and after a few minutes, he runs out of tips to give the pair and he just concludes it at that. "Hopefully it should help and... give us a clean line ahead. We're not finishing last again." He says before running off to the Kimi-Suomi duo to basically give them the same tips about the car.

Zuiha just sighs, watching him. "Once he starts, he never stops until it actually ends."

Mikuren's weekend went better following the signing of Aurinen, conclusion or not, two out of three drivers are in the points. Juri couldn't help but catch Kälö's optimism as they enter the final day in high spirits. Although during the first leg of the rally, Raatikainen crashed out of the second stage, there was nothing they could do about but to keep going.

The following stages are on gravel and one of their drivers wants to put on a show, whatever the reason is doesn't matter, the only thing Juri could say about it is "don't crash." and all three of their drivers took the advice and managed to finish the final leg intact and with varying degrees of success. First of all, Raatikainen finished last of all finishers which pushed the Kimi-Suomi pair down to P13 in the overall standings after a promising Shakedown and Leg 2, this wasn't their weekend. Meanwhile, the 84 of Gallegos and Reotutar was the second Mikuren to go and following their impressive finish in the previous day, their performance lands them inside the top ten with a fast run in SS8 to kick things off until SS9 was canceled. The same can be said to the Aurun pair of Aurinen and Kailenta who finished just ahead of the Fleftic duo, landing them at P7 in the third leg and fifth overall.

As the rest of the competitors finish their runs, AP-Dëritee wins the rally but the impressive performances of both Aurinen and Gallegos weren't looked down upon by Juri and was a cause for celebration within the team. Following a small change within the team, things were looking up. With two of their drivers scoring points, another goal is to get all three to score. While they were so close, fate decided otherwise and it was up to the next rally to finally earn some well-deserved points.

Mikuren's performance in the Wakkanai Winter Classic was a "take that!" to Schkeska's misfortune in the eyes of many in the team.

Juri, Ari, and Mick were pleased.

After the Wakkanai Winter Classic

Celebrations came after the rally where Kälö's returning performance was a notable highlight of the weekend. Coming to a bar somewhere in the center of Nisko to celebrate with Laura and Aiki, who came with the pair to celebrate. After taking their seats, they talk about the entire rally as they settle in their private room.

"Haha! Let's fucking go!" Kälö couldn't contain his excitement as he wraps his arm around Zuiha. "First points and ahead of our teammates after missing a rally! How's that?!"

Zuiha couldn't help but celebrate with him. "heh, we also beat our total points scored last season."

"That's an achievement!"

Laura also joins in. "Congrats you two! Let's keep the momentum going!"

"I can't believe we're celebrating eight points! Haha!"

As the three keep going, Aiki shyly chimes in. "Uhm.. am I even allowed here?" He asks.

Laura goes to answer him. "Yeah, don't worry about it. You're here with us. We'll just get you something non-alcoholic."

"Ah, thanks."

After ordering their food drinks, they continue their chat which would halt for a while as their orders came, grabbing their respective drinks. Kälö stands up and raises his glass. "Joi nÿ, tuleat!" And in unison, the others raises theirs in a toast and yells out with Kälö.

"Käiniseet!"
"Cheers!" in Nisko Aurun. Based on the Karalinne "käineskättä" different form the Standard Aurun "kiipest" / "täreÿhtikest"

“What was the next event called again?” Tre Gallegos asked.

Vicky Reotutar sifted through the pile of documents and field guides on top of her table before pulling out the correct file. “The Wakanai Winter Classic,” she replied, reading it off of the title page. “Why are you asking about it now?”

“Nothing, just a thought that I had,” Tre muttered. “Winter means that there’s probably snow there, right?”

“Oh, don’t you get started on that again,” Vicky groaned as she anticipated what was coming next.

“Have I ever told you how much I hate driving on snow?” Tre said anyway.

“Oh my god! Yes! Yes, Tre, you’ve told me that you hate driving on snow at least a thousand times already!” Vicky said.

But it was true, Tre did hate driving in snowy conditions. Most of it had to do with the fact that snow was hard to come by in his hometown of Markovsky, which was situated on a small arid plain in between the ocean and the mountains to the east. It could get cold in Markovsky during the winter months, but snowfall rarely happened there if at all. Rain fell regularly because of their location near the coast, but never in his 39 years could Tre remember a single snowflake ever having fallen in Markovsky. The mountains in the east were covered in snow all the time, but none of that snow ever made its way down to the city, not in its solid form at least. Hence why Tre had always been apprehensive about driving in the snow, because it was something that he had never experienced before. Tre had some of his worst results in Rally Star on the snow-laden courses in southern Abanhfleft in which the series had raced, and even in the final rally in Norrdnhammr, the one where Tre and Vicky won the show and that registration into WSRC that ended up being wasted until this season, Tre didn’t really feel that he had done that well at all. It was more about the other frontrunners choosing that particular rally to become piss-poor in their results, and the rest as they say is history.

“Look, you’re going to have to learn not only how to drive on snow in the first place because of what we’re doing now,” Vicky said, “but you’re also going to have to learn to actually like driving on snow! We’re going to be driving in these conditions at least once per season, and maybe more! You can’t just keep avoiding it. If you really want us to be able to be competitive with the rest of the field this season and beyond, you’re going to have to suck it up and learn to love the snow!”

“It’s not just the snow that I’m concerned about for this rally,” Tre added. “Have you seen the wildlife notes attached to the guide? Look, the bears and the moose or the elk or caribou or whatever it is, I can tolerate. But I have to draw the line at the fire-breathing dragon-tiger hybrids!”

“Oh, don’t be such a scaredy cat, Tre!” Vicky told him. “I’m sure that the authorities have taken the appropriate steps to make sure that none of those Quebecois tigers are anywhere near the course when we’re running there.”

“I appreciate your trust in the Quebecois authorities, love, I really do,” Tre said, “but personally, when it comes to protecting myself, I prefer doing it myself. And I know someone else who will definitely want to have his own means of protection when it’s time to go to Wakanai.”

“Oh, yeah, Johnny boy definitely will not want to be anywhere near Wakanai without one of his rifles,” Vicky muttered. “And I’m not talking about just the bolt action things but one of those Armalite looking things!”

“Hah! Good luck to him getting one of those things through customs, even if he goes to Quebec on his family’s private jet!” Tre snorted. “And, as I’m sure he’ll say, while he agrees that we all need to protect endangered species, maybe there is a species or two out there we can do without, like a fire-breathing tiger, for example.”

At that moment, their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of two people. They turned out to be Kälö Aurinen and Zuiha Kailenta, and they were the third driver pairing that Mikuren had signed for this season. The pair had already paid a visit to their new teammates from Kimi-Suomi, Raatikainen and Blomqvist, to introduce themselves, and now they were doing the same to Tre and Vicky. The four of them shook hands, and then they talked a little bit about what it was like for Aurinen and Kailenta to miss the first event of the new season because they hadn’t signed with any team back then, and what they hoped to do now that they were in Mikuren. Finally, Aurinen and Kailenta said their goodbyes to Tre and Vicky so the former pair could go check out their car for the coming event in Quebec.

“Nice pairing,” Vicky said once the two Auruns had left. “They should be able to help us all out since they’ve been with this team before. Or at least the team that supports the actual team that’s actually out there. You get what I mean?”

“Oh, sure,” Tre nodded. “Crap, I could actually do with getting some advice from them about driving in the snow. Hey, like you said, I had to start learning somewhere, right?”

After Leg 1 of the Wakanai Winter Classic

”Oh, so you don’t think there’s actually a curse? Well, what do you think now!?” John Watt said in an exaggeratedly deep voice and an equally deep and comical Nordic accent, which drew fits of laughter from the three others who were staying in the tent reserved for the Gallegos/Reotutar pairing. John was referring to an incident earlier last week when Blomqvist, the Kimi-Suomen co-driver of Mikuren’s 77 car, had chastised some of the crew members from Schkeska for talking about a curse just because the team had gotten only one point in the first event of the season.

“Yep, he walked right into that one!” Tre Gallegos nodded in agreement. “He forgot the first rule of trying to break a curse, which is to say that there’s no such a thing as a curse!” This elicited even more laughter from the quartet, which went on for a few more minutes before it finally died down.

“Still, it’s a good thing that they’re both fine,” Daisy Samuels, John’s stepsister, said once everyone had finally stopped laughing. “Curse or not, that was still a crash and a half. At least it didn’t get any worse or else this will be no laughing matter at all.”

“And to think that they topped shakedown too,” Vicky Reotutar added. Expectations were varied across the entire Mikuren team as the drivers had differing expectations of their own. Tre and Vicky couldn’t speak for the others, but neither of them really expected to get anything out of the Wakanai Winter Classic simply owing to the fact that it was a mostly snow-based event and Tre knew that he was not a good driver in snowy conditions. Which then meant that it was a pleasant surprise for them that they got themselves into 9th place in the shakedown, thus far matching their pace in the gravel roads of the Nordenflyg Rally in Aboveland. But the real surprise was Raatikainen and Blomqvist pulling off the improbable and placing themselves at the top of the time sheets at the end of the shakedown period. It was improbable in that Sport Mikuren didn’t look like it was anywhere near topping any stage at the current time, even with the “veterans” Aurinen and Kailenta now being added into the team (they finished the shakedown in 7th, which seemed to suggest that Mikuren’s pace was truly in and around that slightly upper midfield area), but it was a result that everyone was willing to take without a second glance. If only they had been able to make it count, but it seemed like the rally gods had other ideas for the Suomen pair.

“I just can’t help but feel bad for them though, you know?” Daisy said. “I mean, look at it from their point of view. They just did what they probably believed was the impossible and topped out on shakedown. They had the best chance so far to make it count not just for themselves but for the whole team, and then this happens. I mean, I’m a fan of chatting shit and getting hit just as much as the next gal, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t also feel sorry for them.”

“Trust me, Daze, I feel bad for them too,” John replied. “But they also brought this upon themselves. I mean, ‘Stop talking about a curse, guys, it’s not real!’ Yeah, that’ll get everyone to forget about that shit real quick. And sometimes, the more you try to say it’s not real, the more it manifests itself into reality! There has to be some sort of name or law or scientific principle or whatever that applies to this thing. Also, you don’t just say there’s no curse and expect it to happen immediately! It takes time, and also some magical or voodoo shit or whatever before you can even try to convince people who believe in curses that it’s been lifted. That’s just the way the world works. Believe me, we’ve all been there.”

“Yep,” everyone else nodded in agreement. As fans of Abanhfleft’s numerous sporting teams, they had all seen the country’s national teams collapse in their most critical games that they had all long ago accepted that the chances of Abanhfleft winning any sort of international sporting competition were slim to none.

“Let’s just hope and pray that the curse doesn’t decide to strike us next,” Tre muttered. “We’ve still got two more days of running left to do.”

After day 3 of the Wakanai Winter Classic

“Now that is something we all truly didn’t expect,” Tre Gallegos said once the official results of the Wakanai Winter Classic were finally published. There was no denying it anymore: he and Vicky Reotutar had finally proven that they were indeed here in the WSRC to stay. They were no longer the last of the points-scoring drivers anymore thanks to a 6th place finish at the end of the whole event which was definitely boosted by their fourth place finish on the second day’s legs. And at the third leg, where the event transitioned from snow to gravel (a surface on which Tre definitely felt more comfortable), Kälö Aurinen actually went over to Tre’s tent and offered tips on how to handle both the surface and the car. And while Tre didn’t have the memory to remember everything that Aurinen had told him, he did feel that the tips that he did remember helped get him and Vicky into 8th place in the time sheets, just behind the man who had offered said advice.

“We finally have more than one point to our name! Yippee!” Vicky Reotutar said in a tone that was a tad more sarcastic than purely celebratory, but she knew that that was still an achievement for the two of them. "And our team is officially not the worst team on the grid. So far."

"Let's enjoy it while we can, Vicky," Tre said, "because this is definitely not going to last."

Novikov "Not Terribly Concerned" After Abovians' Wakanai Woes
METAVIRA — Despite his and Iskabil-Ælund's weekend of contrasts in Quebec and Shingoryeo, reigning World Stage Rally champion Axel Novikov was unfazed after his long, arduous weekend failed to yield so much as a single point. "We only had a bad result," he said from the vibrant service park in Metavira, Togonistan. "Our pace was good during the weekend, and the car worked fine for Naomi [Keretene] and I. Sometimes, the results don't go your way, but that's rally."

The Lintulahti-based outfit had arrived in the far-northern city of Wakanai with "good chances," as team principal Konrad Puntila had put it after recce, but made just a small splash in Friday shakedown, with Kassegrochian recruit Ivan Poldov languishing outside the top 10 and Novikov and Keretene together in fifth and sixth. The foremost of the three would not see through the first day of competition, as electrical problems ruled Poldov out of the running before the first stage had even begun — earning him an unassaliable 9 minute penalty and an almost certain road-sweeping sentence for the rest of the rally. A trip deep into the impenetrable snowbanks of the Quebecois taiga ruled a podium-challenging Novikov out as well, after a weekend marred by setup issues and a "lack of feeling" with his car. Thus, it was once again Naomi Keretene flying the flag for Iskabil-Ælund at the sharp end of the leaderboard, who despite coming out victorious in a tooth-and-nail spat with ENSADRINK's Marisa Inyuseo on day two, was bested throughout the event by shock winner and last-minute signing Suyauey of The Pearl Kingdom.

Novikov found consolation in Keretene's solid podium performance, even if rumors surrounding the Abovian's attitude towards his younger, and often faster, teammate begin to circulate. "She proved once again that the Skua is quick," he sustained, "but it's a new car and a new feeling for all of us. Some can just adapt quicker than others." He was also adamant that the changes in the standings did not do much to dampen his expectations for the rest of the season; though Keretene took the top spot ahead of Suyauey in the drivers' standings, Iskabil-Ælund dropped to within 3 points of new leaders AP-Dëritee, and the story became bleaker for the ex-WGPC driver: joint fifth with the embattled Watanabe/Hitchens duo from Koaiwa, more than double the points behind his teammate. "I'm not terribly concerned," he stated. "How I made a mistake, it can happen to her as well. The season is long, still, and we can always be worse, anyway—at least we are not cursed."

Also among the Abovians toiling in the final points positions was Sakke Pajari and his bi-national TGK-VK outfit. Both he and teammate and home hero Boludo de Fitzlawrence struggled on the faster roads of Aboveland, and while their Koaiwan teammate Watanabe nearly clutched a podium in Quebec, the two foreign signings of the eclectic manufacturer were left to fight for scraps. Mats Andersson, Vankkavalta Kyvytelsesbillettalli (and TGK technical partner), admitted that the WSRC presented “a tougher challenge” than he and his Koaiwan counterparts had anticipated. “The good thing is that Ren [Watanabe] has got on well with the Albatross,” he smiled, when asked about Pajari’s performance — the driver from Koivuslott had been a “shot in the dark” choice after his lackluster debut season with the now defunct HMG Rally. “Development was a challenge, adapting the car was a challenge, getting to the first rally was a challenge, and now we see that this competition is also a big, big challenge. But Sakke and Boludo just need some extra time to learn the car, and all of its inherent… qualities which make it drive the way it does. To bake a cake, you need to crack a few eggs!”

Postby The Pearl Kingdom » Fri Jul 08, 2022 6:13 pm

It rarely snowed anywhere in the Pearl Kingdom, and it NEVER snowed in the islands or the big coastal cities. Daugin, where Suyauey and Yliande were from, was in the islands and it had never snowed there in living memory, or recorded history, or even in Jouoangquoirais mythology. Yliande had not actually seen snow before signing on as Suyauey's co-driver. Suyauey had seen it, but still had no particular expertise on driving in it. The Wakanai Winter Classic was her first snow rally, and she certainly was not expecting to win. There was pretty much only one thing working to her advantage: she had not had enough bad experiences with snow to get paranoid about it. It was new and exciting, not scary!

The course sounded fascinating. Suyauey and Yliande had never heard of fire-breathing tigers before and had no idea how such a creature could exist. How did they make their fiery breath? Did they burp up flammable gas and light it somehow? Where did the spark to light it come from? The other creatures said to inhabit the snow-covered wilderness seemed only slightly less exotic.

Suyauey and Yliande spent pretty much all their time in Wakanai suited up in AP-Dëritee gear because it was warmer than any of the garments they had brought with them from home, and they still had to buy scarves and hats from the locals. (It took Yliande several minutes to figure out how to fit a winter hat over her sunbleached dreadlocks.) When they tried chatting with local people, they got some blank stares from people who had never seen a Jouoangquoirenne before and could hardly imagine a place as different as Daugin. But they still found guys to dance with at the ball.

During shakedown, they paid close attention not only to landmarks that would help them navigate, but also to how the car handled in the snow.

When Suyauey led after the first leg, she was floored. She wasn't sure if it was a fluke or actual talent. It was probably a little of both. She had been driving quite aggressively, and she was perhaps lucky to get away with it. She was usually very poised and mature for her age, but this had caught her off guard, and she got all flustered when people tried to talk to her about her surprising success.

When she hit the gravelly beaches of the Coldwater Peninsula Provincial Park, and she felt the more familiar way the tires gripped the surface, she had a good feeling. The snowy landscape still looked foreign, otherworldly even, but the ground felt a lot more like the gravelly shores of Joudau (the island that Daugin was built on). She could win this thing if she just made it through the day without screwing up!

It still felt surreal when the final results were confirmed. There were hugs and cheers all around and Suyauey found herself blinking back tears of joy as she said, "I had no idea I could do this, especially in the snow! I'm so happy!"

OOC: A short RP to set things up for a next couple.

Malo 'Bo' and Charlotte certainly hasn't had the easiest of first three races. Not only did the their first two races, where snow and gravel-filled terrain of the Atlantian Oceania nations Aboveland and Quebec & Shingoryeo [Citation needed as it's a bit more complicated] were supposed to provide him a bit of advantage, did not work out, the husband-wife pair had found themselves having to come from behind for much of first two races.

It's not the way that we had expected to kick things off, thought Bo as he lit a cannabis joint just outside of their car, just after finishing their shakedown. While their eleventh-place finish on the shakedown did not mean much in general, and he would prefer to think about that. Not a good shakedown, but I guess we'll have to adjust after a bad start to the calendar. Not that others are doing that much better either but-

'Babe, must you smoke?' turned around Charlotte, her long brown locks waving into the air as she raised her left index finger to express clear disapproval. 'You know how I hate it - you smoke, mum smokes, and so does dad.' Charlotte didn't exactly like the smoke-friendly environment of her childhood home, where plenty of counter-culture and popular music people from the West Coast scene frequented, or that of the Boludo Ranch, where there were plenty of space and scenery for the locals to not feel the societal pressure to smoke.

'Sorry Char,' answered Bo, as he quickly dropped his cigarette and then stomped it to the ground. 'You know I wasn't intending to smoke, especially after a race.'

'You said that in Wakanai too, and yet you were lighting one while the bears just got in our leg the first night!' answered she, not impressed with his excuse for the fifth time this week. 'You know, Bo, sometimes I feel like time flies us way too quickly,' Charlotte sighed. 'Most of the drivers here are like half our age and one of them's even a full-time medic. Have you ever thought of how things can just...be like that?'

'I do, love,' sighed Boludo, before realising that she was referring to how old he's looked at times. For several years now he's heard that he, being a Huayramarcan man with darker skin and his love of shades, looked a bit older than mere late-twenties he was in. 'And I wish that you would stop saying that I'm old!'

'You are though, but also means that I stay young.' Charlotte then winked back at him, before giving him a nice smooch. 'Now, drop the cigarettes for this weekend baby. I don't want to smell the smoke when we kiss.'

'Aye, ma'am.'

Oh, how a couple with one year of age gap would behave at times.

All Change in Togonistan as Gallegos Retires, Keretene Leads
A treacherous second leg in Metavira brutally shuffled the leaderboard of the third round of the WSRC, with overnight leader Trevon Gallegos of Sport Mikuren tumbling from first to a 19 minute retirement penalty. Second-placed home hero Naomi Keretene leads a Nordic 1-2-3, followed by teammate Ivan Poldov and a resurgent Kälö Aurinen.

METAVIRA — Lingering fears of a processional 2nd ZX-Flow Rally Togonistan were quickly left in the dust on Saturday's brutal leg, where home hero and former struggler Naomi Keretene rocketed to the lead of her home rally by a whopping 52.7 seconds by the end of the day, over her Kassegrochian teammate and Kälö Aurinen in the leading Sport Mikuren machine.

Keretene and co-driver Heriko Karaka trailed overnight leader Trevon Gallegos by just 14 seconds going into day 2, but the day would prove that nothing was yet settled from the first stage. Both shock Wakanai winner Suyauey and a continually-struggling Lucien Harcourt-Mauroy of Lisanderian outfit Camden WRT were the early casualties of the day; the latter suffered a heavy accident on the dangerous Arapuni stage which prompted a delay in the schedule as the car was cleared from the road, and the subsequent cancellation of stage 11, the first pass of Kairaki.

Gallegos' slim overnight advantage had begun to be whittled away by Naomi Keretene on SS12, with the Togonistani winning the stage and stage 13 to halve the gap midway through the morning loop. Reigning champion Axel Novikov frequently sparred in the middle of the leaders' battle, finishing ahead of Gallegos on SS12 and just behind on SS13 to also close in on the sharp end of the leaderboard and overhaul Augustine Imparato of ENSADRINK WSR for third.

However, things would go awry for two of the leaders on the penultimate stage of the morning, the confirmed pass of the Kairaki stage. Axel Novikov plummeted from the leading fight after a misjudged left-hander sent his Skua careening into the undergrowth. Precious lost seconds turned to minutes as the Abovian wrestled his car out of the bushes, but carried bits of the scenery around in his wheels. Plus a front-right puncture to boot, the Abovian lost well over two minutes across the final two stages going into midday service. Worse, however, would befall the Fleftic leader. Retirement on the same stage, once all the top-class cars had gone through, would strike him down with 19 minutes of penalties before the end of the morning loop: once more, the so-dubbed "Schkeska Curse" had curled its paw.

Gallegos and Reotutar's demise would mean that Keretene entered the evening loop of stages with a comfortable 30 second lead over second-placed Augustine Imparato of Valentine Z and teammate Ivan Poldov — but that did not stop her from pushing harder. Confirming "the feeling" in the car was "absolutely perfect", the young championship leader blitzed her rivals over the day's four remaining stages. A strong showing from Poldov — and a falter from Imparato — spurred the consistent Kassegrochian into second, just ahead of the leading Mikuren car of Aurinen close behind in third. An inspired drive from Koaiwan Ren Watanabe — always the leading TGK-VK Albatross — put the plucky bi-national outfit closer to the podium going into leg 3: a consolation prize to make up for Quebecois Boludo's early exit on SS17. A quietly strong drive from Hodoran hotshot Marisa Inyuseo maintained ENSADRINK at the doorstep of the podium, with the season 1 second runner-up replacing her teammate near the top of the standings.

As Rally Togonistan nears its most vibrant and eclectic final leg, running through the villages on the outskirts of Metavira, the stars have seemed to align once again for reigning constructors' champions Iskabil-Ælund WRT, despite Novikov's mistake condemning the Abovian to a lowly 9th place. However, nothing is set in stone: a particularly strong showing from Aurinen could secure the Aurunan's best-ever WSRC result; Inyuseo could continue her title challenge with a strong result at the end of the day; and Tatehama Giken Kogyo could finally get their money's worth with an inspired drive by leading compatriots Watanabe and Hitchens.

Metavira Expo Park
ZX-Flow Energy Rally Togonistan

Winning at home was something else. Confidently winning the final stage had settled the deal and left their Kassegrochian teammates far behind in the sheets. The crowd that had gathered around Metavira Expo Park erupted as they saw the Skua with Togonistani flags on rear windows make it across the finish line. With a huge smile on her face, Naomi took off her helmet and gave a big hug to Heriko, before climbing out of the car and greeting the audience. The two connected their hands above the Skua's roof and posed for photographers, before heading on to give their first post-rally interviews. During the interviews, Naomi thanked the team for giving her a competitive car for the event, as well as all the fans that supported her.

Compared to last year, everything had changed. Throughout the whole weekend, Naomi had experienced nothing but positive vibes from everyone she had met. The introduction she had received during the first day's start podium had received a huge applause from the crowd. Even inside the service park, she hadn't heard any remarks regarding her behaviour nor her ties to her daddy's sponsorship. Even the loud-mouthed Viliamu Galuvao had been quietly avoiding eye contact with her. Jealousy mixed with humiliation? Perhaps. After all, Naomi had more than proven herself as a capable driver, both last as well as this season so far.

Speaking of doubts, her newest teammate Ivan Poldov had received a lot of it. Having competed as a part-time gentleman driver during the last season, internet had been less than generous towards him. Mostly due to his appearance in the third season of WGP3 ENZ Championship, where he had been driving for the dreadful Team Mirkov and ended the season with zero points. While the wider public perhaps hadn't connected the dots, fans from Togonistan as well as the rest of Novapax had been eager to give him hard time for it, dubbing him as yet another pay driver with no skill. Well, that very same Ivan Poldov was now behind the podium with her, waiting to drive up and receive his second WSRC trophy. Feels familiar? Naomi had brought it up in a conversation with him once, to which Ivan has simply shrugged and, with a humble smile on his face, said ''let them talk.'' She really hadn't made up her mind on what to think of the Kassegrochian duo. Ivan seemed to always be polite with everyone, while Vitaly was mostly quiet. At first, Naomi had thought he was just a shy person. However, by now, it had become clear that the Kassegrochian co-driver simply wasn't very good at English, letting Ivan do most of the talking instead.

''We did it,'' Heriko said with a smirk on his face as they were sitting in the car, waiting.

''Yup... we did it,'' Naomi nod, ''finally.''

''What's wrong? You seem...''

Naomi cut him off. ''I am more than fine! We won. I hope there's more to come.''

''Don't tell me you're still salty about Aboveland.''

''I just don't know how I messed up that corner there. It still baffles me.''

''Why are you even thinking about that right now? We have two second places and a rally win now. If we carry on like that, we're going to win the championship!''

''I don't know. I guess I just want too much.''

''Look, there's still five more rounds to go. You have to keep your head clear, we can't mess this up.''

''I know, I know,'' Naomi said as she checked herself from the rear view mirror and as she adjusted her hair, ''now shut up!''

Heriko smirked and looked as Ivan drove his car up to the podium. Indeed, sometimes, Naomi had the personality of a pitchfork.

''...and now, ladies and gentlemen, the winners of the 16th Annual ZX-Flow Energy Rally Togonistan! Give a big round of applause to Naomi Keretene and Heriko Karaka!''

With that, Naomi pushed the throttle and took their car up on the podium. She sent some blow kisses at the audience as she stepped out of her car once again, before heading up the stairs to the podium, where she and Heriko received their trophies. Having listened to the national anthem of Togonistan, it was time to spray champagne all around the podium. The sun was shining and the drink was sparkling. It was a fine day after all.
