Audioslavia (AUD) official Bangers
for selection for Scratch the Decks
Stan Mina - Heavenly Summary by Bone Tocks (sped up to 120bpm)
Horst Wildly - メリー・ゴー・ラウンド by Tetsuo Yoshimitzu (also sped up a little)
Linda Morea - Schottians are such Vicious Predators by Disquietizer

Stan Mina has gone for one of the songs he enjoys listening to to maintain pace on a run, and figures he’ll get the crowd up and bouncing in similar fashion. Horst has gone for some oriental jazz, which is his own problem, while Linda opts for pseudo-80s banger Schottians are Such Vicious Predators.

As a show of vague solidarity to Jeremy Jaffacake, all songs have been taken from the Idiot Project Soundtrack.

The competitors pick their songs for Scratch the Decks

Hektor’s pick: Happy, by Portside

“I play this at the cafe every time I work the late shift. It's just the right feeling of joy in the somber, and that's just too much of me to not share with the world.”

Jerrye’s pick: Landstorm, Dapolite

“I play this every night at Extraneous E’s. You should see how the crowd really gets into it!

Seriously, you should come by whenever I'm on — Surf City has the perfect vibe for you, and I can make you a drink that'll bring you joy, pain, and joy again in a single cup. We're over on 29th and the Walk, just look for the extra E.”

Mary Carmen’s pick: Beat It (Muzak version)

“Oh, I loved this song growing up! I know it's dated now, but the classics are the classics. This one has the right ups and downs to keep you moving. Speaking of moving, did you hear about Joy and what happened at the Post Office the other day? Let me tell you, she was just…”

Plough Islands yacht race - timing
The Plough Islands yacht race will be scorinated at some point after tonight's cutoff - apologies for the short notice, but I have been heavily preoccupied the last week :( I will endeavour to include any roleplays that are posted before I actually post results, which will probably be at some stage on Sunday.

Scratch the Decks - song choices
The question of song choice was posed to all three Plough Islanders at once; it took Leanne about two seconds to respond with All You Pretty Girls, an XTC single that had received significant airplay on Plough Radio's late night programmes, and began to hum the song's sea shanty-esque keyboard hook as Eugene gestured slightly incredulously.
At this point, everyone looked over at Loreithel - who was officially the composer-in-residence at the University of the Plough Islands, although as they were also a double-digit percentage of that institution's entire music faculty, most of their composition was squeezed in around tutorials and lectures - expecting something profoundly musical, but after a period of thought, the question "what is deejaying?" came out instead. After a brief explanation, and a prompt of "so you probably want something fast, with a good groove", Loreithel either ignored or misunderstood the advice and chose The Rising Tide, by South African band Bright Blue, and began to articulate at length about the song's significance as a symbol of solidarity from within the privileged class under the apartheid system, and particularly in the context of the heightened tension within the white community...
They trailed off after a while when the interviewer began to get antsy and pointed out to Eugene that he hadn't picked a song yet, leading to an obscenity and a lot of hemming and hawing. Eventually the diplomat picked Interstellar, describing it as 'atmospheric synthwave-retro-whatever', something that had not had airplay anywhere in particular - but as he pointed out to Leanne and Loreithel, "at least you can dance to it!".

Cobre cook-off - the plan
Having seen the results of letting his comrades pick whatever music came to mind, Eugene opted to take the lead in picking ingredients for the cook-off - partially to ensure competitive parity for the Plough Islanders, but mostly because he had become acutely aware since he had become closely acquainted with them that Leanne mostly just ate oatmeal, and that Loreithel, in their decade and a half on the islands, had apparently transitioned to subsisting entirely on pine-needle tea. Every single meal or snack that Eugene had offered to the elf since they had left the islands had gone begging, although Leanne had successfully been able to feed them a complimentary mint from the Mertagnian hotel reception.
Though he rarely thought much about race and ethnicity while he was back home, Eugene felt like the whitest person alive when looking at the contents of the food crate the Plough Islander delegation had brought. So after being knocked out of the bog boarding - there was evidently a technique to this nonsense that he had failed to master, although Loreithel's approach of "misunderstanding the instructions and doing the run feet first like a filthy luger" had apparently led them to be hailed as an outsider genius within the world of almost aquatic sports - Eugene took a trip to Mertagnian supermarket Stanton's with the daily food budget they had so far failed to make use of.
He returned to the hotel with almost the Craebog branch's entire supply of herbs, condiments, spices, and liquids that had to be sold in comically small bottles, knowing that at least he had tried. If they could not call upon any professional gourmands - which would require the Plough Islander palate to expand greatly beyond the twin realms of 'things that have been smoked' and 'things that have been salted' - they could, Eugene was confident, at least attempt to craft something that used these new flavour sensations to powerful effect. Even if, as he began to read the labels on what he had bought, the end result was likely to be an immiscible, multi-coloured sludge of porridge and wildly disparate spices. With pine needles in.

"So all those times you had to jump to stay alive on Mind the Gap helped you be the only one of us three to make it to the final round?"

"Even though you were so good at this game that the show producers had to screw you over by giving you tougher questions?"

"I guess, yeah. You still gotta have hops to win Mind the Gap, ya know!"

Bog Boarding had nothing to do with jumping, but Braelynn Debenham knows the laws of aerodynamics are universal—she used that to her advantage to become the lone Gortoleki in the competition final. Braelynn look at her fellow FLAGS competitors: Finn Gilchrist, the almost-famous lead singer of math rockers Paeonia, and Taavet Sniders, your random competitor who called a number inside a bathroom stall.

The three had gotten along with each other pretty well, almost as if the three had become friends over the course of the tournament. They did, mind you. But they're competitors first, and suffice to say there's no love lost between the three, muddied a la Dannmarsh. And tired from the physical exertion. Which means hungry for food.

Thankfully, all three are prepared for showcasing their cooking adventures in the Cobre Cook Off, which they'll have to get to before returning back home to Gortolekua and play DJ for a night. Will they be offending actual DJs, who have spent the many hours perfecting their craft and establishing their profession as "a Job that Demands Us to Be Taken Seriously"—a motto that was initially met with reservation and now accepted by the wider society? Possibly.

But there's food to think about first, and Finn, the most culinary-minded of the three, knows it.

"So we might as well move on from the bogs for a minute," Finn told Braelynn and Taavet. "Fellas, what are we cooking up this time for the first round?"

"Honestly? I'm making a sandwich. Shredded chicken, barbecue sauce, a little bit of candycap mushroom powder sprinkled in there to sweeten it up and boy oh boy is it a rocking delight," Taavet replied, smiling at the thought of his meal. "Serve with a side of cowboy cornbread and chef's kisses go all around the board."

"See, I'm going with a simple beef stroganoff. Sirloin steak, the best onion you can find, Shiitake mushrooms, freshly made broth, Dijon mustard...it's gonna be a party in there," Braelynn said. "What about you, Finn?"

"Heh, wouldn't you like to know," Finn said, keeping his recipe book, which he brought along to Mertagne, close to him. "I've been preparing and contemplating what to do, for this one, so I guess you'll have to see me wait."

Taavet and Braelynn looked at Finn and sighed. This was going to be a long time spent together.

Braelynn Debenham: Karla YDY - Good for Measure
Taavet Sniders: Rico Montez - rosmarinus

Marzelltana wrote:you know, I think Braelynn's track is a banger for sure. definitely knows how to get a dance floor grooving, imo

poziktriste wrote:Taavet with the banger! I'd use fire emojis but this board is too antiquated to support them (?!) so all I can say is that song knows how to get a crowd jumping. I hope, at least.

'So, the songs we've decided upon for Scratch the Decks are all what we like to hear at the the Winded Palm on a Friday night. They generally get the crowds upstairs really hyped and ready for whatever comes next.

We've gone for (Ste) Andrew W.K.'s Party Hard, because it's just such an anthem for having a good time and there's shots literally flying around while it plays, which is a bit dangerous we guess but it's a great one to open a night with on a Friday night when everyone's got off work and are ready for a few drinks and having fun.

(Lucinda) CKY's 'Shippensburg'. Should be on a soundtrack somewhere, honestly.

(Ellen) Motörhead's Ace of Spades. Everyone knows the words, or at least to the chorus, and it really sets up an awesome vibe when there's a load of people packed into a sweaty room singing their heads off to the words. As it can sometimes get cold in Palmsville at night with the cool sea air coming in from the south and west, you can see the steam from the heat of the room going out the open windows. It's amazing bouncing around singing this and going generally a bit mad with your mates.

Eva and Tla training for the first Palmsville Go-Kart Team Event.

“Hey, cheer up, Eva.” Evan was trying to console Eva, after they just missed out on the cutoff for the bog boarding finals: thirty-first, the best to be cut from the thirty-person final field. Evan himself had only barely made it through, squeezing in tied for twenty-ninth. Tla didn’t make it, either, but they weren’t really ever in it — a miracle run put them in thirty-third after run one, but they didn’t get anywhere close to that on their other two runs, and they finished way behind in fifty-sixth of sixty in total. Eva, however, was more disappointed.

“You didn’t make it, but you were so close!” Eva actually had done quite well. Their first run wasn’t spectacular, but it was the nineteenth-best out of everyone’s first try — including Evan’s. Eva did even better on their second try, with a little bit of practice, although so did other people — but they were still twenty-fourth. So when they weren’t quite able to top their longest run, it looked like they might be okay, but others started to pass Eva’s score.

Wulf, from Eselagel. Twenty-fifth. Still safe.

Loreithel, from the Plough Islands. Twenty-sixth. Still safe.

Tipaldo, from Aquacorp. Twenty-seventh. Still safe.

Ellen, from the Ochre Islands. Twenty-eighth. Still safe.

Otutodilinna, from Avorago. Twenty-ninth. Still safe.

Braelynn, from Gortolekua. Thirtieth. Still safe. Barely.

But Eva was passed for the final spot in the final on the final run of the event. And even worse, Eva was passed by someone they had used to be a big fan of.

“Why did Laser Shark have to do that?” Eva bawled. “I thought Laser Shark was nice! And cool! But Laser Shark’s just a meanie!”

Evan sighed. “Sorry, Eva.”

Tla came over then, their eyes as fierce and piercing as a little kid could manage. “You know what we’re gonna do, Eva?” they asked their best friend. “We’re gonna work! And we’re gonna train! And next time, we’re gonna be the best! We’re gonna win it! We’re gonna tie for the win! And they won’t be able to break the tie, and we’ll both win the gold medal!”

Eva sniffled. “Really?” they asked, hopefully.

“Oh, I’m sorry, you two,” Evan interjected. “There isn’t going to be a next time.”

Tla and Eva started at him blankly. “But there’s another one that’s gonna happen!” Tla insisted. “Remember! They told you to remember to come back for it!”

“Yeah, Tla, but that was just for me. Only a few people made it. I’m sorry, but you might as well start thinking about the other events, and train for those ones.”

Eva didn’t want to do that, though. They wanted to win a gold medal with Tla. They wanted to win bog boarding with Tla.

“Sorry, Eva.” At least Tla’s hug made them feel better.

“Which song are you gonna choose?” Eva was breathless, barely able to contain their excitement as they strategized for the music competition with their best friend, Tla. Both of them felt so much better after getting to race go-karts around. Go-karts had a knack for making Eva and Tla forget whatever they were disappointed about — even a last-second elimination at the fins of a laser shark.

Tla was so excited, they practically screamed. “The dinosaur song!”

“I love the dinosaur song!”

“Oh no, not that one,” Evan groaned from the other side of the room. Evan had heard the dinosaur song one too many times. Much more than just one too many times, actually. “Anything but that stupid dinosaur.”

Eva was disappointed, but that didn’t knock Tla’s smile from their face. “Which song are you gonna pick?”

Instantly, Eva was as giddy as Tla was again. “The money song!”

Evan turned around to look at them. “Wait — have you two been looking through my music? I love Vermilion Steve!”

Evan — what was that look on Evan’s face? Eva had never seen it before — from him, at least. Eva had seen Evan smile before, occasionally, but there was something else, too. It looked like Z. Zilot-Izilv when they added numbers in front of their teacher. It looked like Tla when they had just finished a really cool story about dinosaurs. It looked like their daddy when he gave them a hug picking them up from school every day. Was Evan proud of them?

Before Eva could say anything, Tla jumped in. “Who’s Verminin Steve?”

Vermilion Steve. They’re a band from Osarius. A bit of an oldie, though, maybe makes some sense you don’t know them. Wait — are you talking about the Feather Girls? That one that went solo, the one she just released?”

“I don’t know that one. Is it good?”

“Yeah, it’s pretty good. Wait — I know it’s an oldie, but with that new musical and everything, and I know you like upbeat music: you didn’t pick that LAVA song, did you?”

“No, LAVA’s fun, but this one’s even better!”

“Oh, yeah?” Evan looked down at Eva with a faint smile. “Which one is it?”

“It’s the money song by Jack Olsen Kid’s Music Channel!”

Evan’s face quickly settled into an expression with which Eva was more familiar. “Fuuuuu—” Evan breathed. He really should have known. Why did he get his hopes up in the first place? It was hopeless.

“What did you say, Evan?”

“Nothing. Fun. Just thinking about —” Evan closed their eyes “— how fun this sounds.”

Neither Tla or Eva picked up on what Evan was obviously feeling. “What’ll you be doing?”

“Me? Oh, I dunno. All of my music is too ethereal. It’s not club music. It just wouldn’t be properly appreciated by a throng of whoever shows up. Even if they enjoyed it, they wouldn’t get it.”

“But what is it?” Eva asked again.

“Yeah!” Tla jumped in. “You should do it just because it’s cool!”

Evan sighed. “I think I’ll probably do something by the Mías.”

“Ooh, the Mías?” Eva giggled. “You love them. Are you in loooove with Mía?” Tla joined in, puckering their lips.

“Stop it, you two. Seriously. We’ve got things to do.” Evan got increasingly annoyed. “I’m our only finalist in bog boarding, we were abysmal in karting, and we’re clearly not going to win scratch the decks. God, do you two even know how to cook?”

Tla and Eva looked at each other, then back at Evan. “My daddy taught me how to make dino nuggies once!” Eva volunteered, beaming.

Evan closed his eyes and took a deep sigh. Finally, they opened his eyes. “Alright, I guess we’ve got to make sure you know something for when you’re up there.” Eva smiled. Evan was about to help them! He was about to teach them something fun!

“So you don’t embarrass us again out there.”

Eva — well, Eva made something. They knew that. But they forgot what it was called. How to make it, too. All they really remembered is that when it was time to eat it, it turned out they weren’t really very hungry after all. They didn’t even want dino nuggies anymore.

Icy wind lashed Osinachi Amadi’s face as she stared down at her board ten metres away, the entire region watching on. This was her first trip out of her home island of Avorago, and boy had she realised just how different places just across the Sea of Ayes were. Avorago, being a subtropical island with next to no connection to the outside world, meant that each and every inhabitant was unaccustomed to the tropical temperatures of the south and the colder nature of the north, and Amadi was no exception. Shivering in her clothing, of which she had to get teammate Otutodilinna Choike to help her put on that morning, the 17-year-old’s mind kept wandering back to the good old times in her homeland and for the first time, wishing she hadn't signed up for this opportunity.

This was what was whirring through Amadi’s mind as everyone watched in anticipation, wondering what this slender youngster could do in this event. And as it turned out, it really wasn’t much. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Amadi finally set off for the run, but only made it two steps before the mud gave way beneath her, the youngster falling on her backside, much to the amusement of everyone watching on. The fallen warrior herself even produced a half-smile before she brushed herself off and began preparing for her next jump, appearing to totally ignore the fact that she had just wasted one of three precious jumps.

But that next jump, too, would also result in an X going next to her name. At least, this time, Amadi landed on the board. Her run-up and takeoff were as smooth as glass, but in midair, a gust of wind distracted her momentarily, the athlete losing her composure as she flopped onto the board, which gave way under her. She attempted to gain some sort of result with a leap out onto the mud, but did not react quickly enough as another fail was marked next to her name.

Amadi had one jump left. Could she save herself of complete and utter humiliation?

Of course not. Like last time, her run-up and takeoff were smooth, well-oiled and precise, but then, disaster struck.

Amadi let go of the board.

The crowd breathed a sigh of shock as Amadi flew over the board, her futile attempts to at least get some bit of her body on the board snuffed out, the tips of her toes landing a good metre away from the front of her board. Technically, she had just jumped 4-5 metres, but had not used the board at all and thus, was awarded her third X in three attempts.

This, though, was only the start of FLAGS. There were heaps of other events to come - and many that suited her strengths very well indeed.

Osinachi Amadi would not let this end her dreams of success on the regional stage.

Scratch the Decks

After much deliberation, Gortolekua welcomes its first ever multiversal competition to its lands with the Scratch the Decks disc jockeying competition. All competitors were blindfolded and had a paper bag placed over their head following the completion of the day's FLAGS events. Each competitor was escorted by Gortoleki Rangers to 60 different nightclubs scattered across the country, randomly selected by Nightlife Gortolekua, the governing body for all nighttime activities in the nation.

The following night clubs, alongside a map of the country to showcase just where each province is located, is provided below. More information is available upon request. The numbers do not reflect final placement in the event.

Each DJ set began with their entry song. From there, TAG provided a specially curated selection of music based on each competitor's submitted song to use in the rest of their set.

A representative from the Turntablists' Association of Gortolekua was present at every FLAGS' competitor's DJ set, observing the vibe and mood and groove of each participating nightclub. Competitors were considered to have gotten a night club grooving when everyone in the crowd was "dancing," deemed to be not inactive. Competitors were given three hours to get their nightclub grooving; those who failed to get their audience in the mood to dance were given a DNG: Did Not Groove.

Medalists were given immediate membership to the TAG, becoming the union's first ever multiversal members. In addition, TAG also assessed each entrant's submitted song for quality. Competitors who received highest marks from the union were given informational pamphlets and favored access to join TAG, which streamlines application process into the union.

Cobre Cook-off

A random draw was conducted to assign each entrant a number from 1-60.
The draw was conducted so that no two entrants from the same team could face each other in the first round.

Numbers 57-60 were awarded a bye to round two.
57 - Kolawale Aduba (Cobrio)
58 - Lucinda Flincham (Ochre Islands)
59 - Stan Mina (Audioslavia)
60 - Jared Rhodes (New Gesem)

The remaining fifty-six entrants were paired up sequentially (i.e. 1 v 2, 3 v 4, etc) for head-to-head cook-offs.

Round One
None of the battles in the first round were given a theme.
Where scores were level from the four judges, a randomly selected member of the audience was asked their preference to determine the winning cook1.

Round Two

For round two, each winning entrant from round one, plus the four who were awarded byes, were re-assigned numbers from 1-32.
Again, the draw was conducted in such a way that no two entrants from the same team could be drawn against each other in this round, and entrants were paired up sequentially (1 v 2, 3 v 4, etc).

The sixteen losing entrants from round one also took place in a single classification battle, with their score contributing toward final placing (OOC: entrants are ranked by average score in each battle so far; in cases where the average scores of multiple entrants are equal, they are awarded the same final rank)

Once more, no theme was in place for this round (or the classification battle).

For the third round, the theme of every cook-off will be "summer in your nation". A classification battle involving all losing entrants from round two will take place simultaneously.

The quarter finals will have the theme "winter in your nation". A classification battle involving all losing entrants from round three will take place simultaneously.

Classification battles will have the same themes as the round they occur concurrently with, and places 17-32 will be determined based on average scores across rounds one and two, and the two subsequent classification rounds.

Themes for the final four will be announced after the quarter finals.

The Cobre Culinary Guild (CCG) released a statement insisting that their judges have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of dishes prepared so far -- though it may not appear to be the case based on scoring. "It is important to note that these dishes are being judged at a professional standard, and as many entrants are not professional chefs, any dish receiving more than ten, which is half marks, should be considered a creation of high standard." Special congratulations were also afforded to Jonas Wilson of Ko-oren, for receiving a perfect score from at least one judge in each of their cook-offs to this point.

1For the purposes of transparency, what I actually did was generate a random number between 0 and the combined RP bonus of the two entrants; if the result is equal to or lower than the larger of the two, the entrant with the larger bonus wins. If they have equal bonus, then a value equal to or lower than half of the combined bonus means the first entrant wins.
Finally free of the oppressive yoke of the Osarian Kingdom.

Postby The Plough Islands » Sun May 22, 2022 12:00 pm

The 22nd May dawned, as many spring days did on the Plough Islands, foggy yet bright. The competing teams from across Anaia were all housed in temporary accommodation at the Recreation Ground just outside Avalon, and the view out from the pavilion was almost pure white - so pervasive was the fog that it was a struggle to make out the boundary rope, let alone any landmarks beyond.
They had been on Avalon Island ever since Saturday's training, at which representatives from the People's Sutton Yachting Association had gone over the absolute basics - "these ropes make the sail go up, and these make it go down...should you fall in the water, do not panic, and try not to die" - of operating a six metre sailing boat. This had been more necessary for some people than others; the PSYA instructors had spent less time than they would have wished for on the principles of sailing, and longer than usual on matters of safety, with some of that dedicated to fishing competitors (sometimes repeatedly) out of the Celestial Ocean.
Consequently, when faced with almost zero visibility on the appointed day, there was some concern about letting a group containing some virtual novices out on the waves, with the Plough Islands Naval Force (handling traffic control and rescue duties for the race) had recommended postponing the race. However, the PSYA held firm, believing that conditions would improve, and this was borne out; by nine o'clock, the fog was beginning to disperse and the call went out for the competitors to assemble by their flags at the water's edge.
Not all the crews were at full strength; Mertagne's Kristie Ettrick had been denied permission to travel to the Plough Islands after her travel history was found to contain a number of countries in the Atlantian Oceania region deemed hostile to the Plough Islands, something that Lucea Hyde (Osarius), Cruz Kaiplo (StrayaRoos), and Harmon Mulvahil (Ko-oren) fell foul of only under questioning at Echodale Interdimensional Airport. Two members of the Aquacorp delegation were also held back for questioning for several hours before being allowed entry, owing to the company's links with that region; the Ministry of Defence & Foreign Affairs had been unable to conclusively prove anything in relation to the laser shark, largely because the constable accompanying the officials of the Ministry had begun to get quite seasick.
But every competing team was represented, and arrangements were being made to rig up their vessels, drawn at random from a canvas bag by each captain, with the appropriate ensigns and other colours - something that the Cobrio team were, for reasons that failed to resonate with the PSYA, particularly insistent upon. There was an unusual degree of media interest in the race, with selected journalists from across Anaia having been invited to cover the event, and a small band of locals had also gathered to see the teams off from Avalon. Perhaps with an eye on this, the Minister for Culture & Society, Cde James Cloud, gave a short speech on the jetty to wish all the competing nations well, and reflect upon the year that had passed since the formation of Anaia;

on the 22nd May 2022, Cde James Cloud, OP, wrote:...to you, the competitors in today's race, it is thanks to the Declaration of Foxchester that we can welcome you as friends and fellow Anaians. It ushered in a new era of cooperation and unity of purpose under the flag of Anaia, the fruits of which can be seen in the stability, and friendship, that we now enjoy with so many other nations. For those who accused us, as Plough Islanders, of treason to something we had never been a part of, and who - even now - deny the legitimacy of our region; let the Declaration and the record of our achievements as Anaians stand as proof of their failure.
Friends and comrades - including those we are yet to meet - our message as Anaians is one of happiness and progress. We set out for worlds yet to be found, and stretch for heights yet to be scaled; our touch is light, and our lives even more so. We refuse to take ourselves or the multiverse too seriously, and we take as much joy from togetherness and solidarity with our friends, as we do from our victories. It is in this spirit of unity that we wish you all well on your journey today; may the currents that have been so kind to Anaia carry you safely across the strait to Sutton. Go forth, and good luck!

After the Minister had concluded, the PSYA wasted little time in getting the crews to their boats, and barely ten minutes later, the last of the competing teams lurched out of Avalon harbour towards the start line. The fog had shrunk back to a gentle mist that wreathed the Swift Island hills across the strait, and as the starter prepared to drop the flag, the sea was calmer than it had been in recent days, with a soft breeze filling each team's sails. It was now just between the crews and the ocean...

The People's Sutton Yachting Association included in their summary of the meeting results a statement to remind people that, with such minimal training as many of the contestants had, finishing the eight kilometre race at all should be viewed as an impressive achievement, and that even the most landbound of competitors had progressed enough by the end of the race to have touched the hearts of all Plough Islanders with their competitive spirit. The PSYA also wished to note that they did not see - and for the purposes of determining the results did not take into account - any difference in performance between teams with a full complement of crew and those without.
In addition, both the PSYA and the Naval Force offered their sincere apologies to the Gortolekuan crew for the unfortunate mishap that befell the Ophelia, and particularly for the manner in which the rescue had to be conducted; the Naval Force personnel involved sent their best wishes for a swift recovery, and stressed they were merely using the equipment that was to hand when the need arose.
Finally, on behalf of the Commonwealth of the Plough Islands, everyone responsible for organising the event wished all competing countries the very best of luck for the rest of the competition.

Our brave athletes have won an event! Mulvahil won the Bog Boarding, the event he described as 'coming very close to goal celebrations', even if he plays as a left or centreback and rarely gets to join in with the festivities. Other events haven't brought us too much glory yet, but the real fun has been in watching several succeed - and several fail - regardless of where they're from. The Plough Islands were a beautiful backdrop to yachting, and even if one of our own was denied entry for playing football professionally in... Audioslavia (that famous Atlantian Oceanian bastion)? We're not exactly sure what happened, but with just two on board, we came 17th. The cook-off has started off much better than expected, with Jonas Wilson finding a potential avenue for employment after his playing days. And that's not just cooking: he is invited to join TAG as a DJ as well.

In the Cook-off, we couldn't tell each athlete to call their mums and make something based on their instructions. All three are vaguely from the southwest, which would result in three quality dishes - but also, three similar dishes. In the lead-up to the event, Wilson was given a crash course in a few options from the southeast - spicy, fishy, with strangely sweet options on the side - which he apparently mastered instantly. Mulvahil tried to specialise in Yoshiman dishes: fruity, with a million side-dishes, and 99% vegetarian. Augustus Smith was given free reign of his native region's cooking: something doughy filled with about a dozen of options: meat, another type of meat, some other meat, etc, with nuts, pumpkins, potatoes, etc, on the side.

For the third round, a summery round, all three will try out something else from a little further east: rice, dates, with or without various Amandinean options: shellfish and greasy sauces. Or maybe include the Yoshiman side a bit more, which is grown in much warmer climates - for someone from the north, it's always summer in Yoshima. The round after that, should any of our heroes make it, is wintery, in which case we'll look to Aerellen and Sudaefjoll options: roasts, bakes, whatever else gives off a campfire-y vibe.

We're also closing in on the Orienteering event. The location has been announced by the organisation, who did everything to keep their secrets hidden.

Image

The event will take place just west of the city of Idyllwild, with the exact starting location to remain unknown until just before the start. The rough, mountainous (but very hike-able) terrain features the start of the river Obadha, the river that flows through Idyllwild, Huthwich, Bellmare, Linieux, and lastly Aminey (where it is renamed Addeau). There's a small chance the Eidikuna is involved, which flows through Morkumau, through the Iduleiku lake, through Gaulthisoru and find the Bay of Ko-oren in Mayara. The river Lerrara is on the other side of the range, where it feeds into the Salamantic Sea through Eaglebury. Two lakes should be recognisable to many Ko-orenites, they're popular (but not that popular vacation spots. Many families opt to go a little further north (where the lakes are bigger) or south (closer to civilisation).

In the event, competitors are given a map with a start, an end, and several dozen control points along the way. It is up to the competitor to find the most efficient way between the points during the 60 minute period in which you can study your map. After that, the competitor is released into the wild, with their map, trying to make the best of their plan. After touching all control points, the competitor is free to go to the end point (where time is called). Upon verification of them actually having been to all points and successful hike to the end point, their time is added to the leaderboard.

To give you an idea of all of the disciplines there are, orienteering tracks (in Ko-oren, at least) vary in the following:
Length: Ultrasprint (<5 mins), Sprint (5-15 min), Short (15-30 min), Middle (30-60 min), Long (1-2 hr), Ultralong (2-4 hr), Marathon (>4 hr)

Method: Walking, running, cycling, cross country skiing, canoeing, sailing, swimming, diving, or even by motorised transport.

Environment: Urban, rural, natural, or in the air/under water.

Scoring: on time (start->end, start->control points in order->end, start->control points in athlete's preferred order->end) or via high score (most control points visited within allotted time

Tools: with map, without map (locations must be memorised), various navigation tools (compasses, etc)

Challenges: Puzzles to be solved to find the end location, challenges to be completed on the go (collect rock/flower on the way, etc)

For the record, the Ko-orienteering event is a 'simple' Marathon length (12 hrs), walking/running/hiking event in natural environment, with the control points visited according to the athlete's preferred order as determined in their personal 60 minute prep time), with a map, no challenges or puzzles.

It was an unusually clear and not-frigid day in the outskirts of Sydneigh when all the FLAGS competitors gathered. Perhaps the fates chose to smile upon those courageous and compassionate enough to strike out across the region in search of the meaning of brotherhood, and blessed all comers with not having to deal with high-crashing waves and terrible cold-induced muscle cramps that the typical Austailian climes would bring. With all the safety padding laid out and each competitor rigged up to a safety belay carefully tuned to not give any advantage in clinging to the cliffs but tight enough to snap into action at any sudden drop, the clock started running.

Yes, Austailians measure in decimals of a minute rather than seconds, please respect our cultural traditions.

Cobre Cook-off

The third round consisted of only those who had won both of their previous battles.
The theme was "summer in your nation", with judges awarding more generously to dishes which conveyed this concept best.

01 - Tipalo Nado (Aquacorp) 10 9 13 9 40

Simultaneously, the first of two classification battles took place; this one for those eliminated in Round Two.
This battle also had the same theme of "summer in your nation", with judges awarding more points to dishes conveying this concept.

"Touey, what the hell?!" The Osarian team were in a shared suite at a hotel in Burningham, preparing to travel to The Plough Islands the next day, but Lucea Hyde was in shock, reading the results of the Scratch the Decks event from the previous night. "You did better than me with a playlist of songs similar to a bunch of suburban Crowners rapping?"

Touey, to his benefit, just laughed. "Don't know what to tell you, Luce," he said. "I guess the Gortoleki have a discerning taste in music, eh? Didn't you finish last out of our team?"

Lucea scowled and hurled a cushion at him.

"Wait," said Phoenixperson, "I did better than Lucea?" They were still wearing their full costume. Neither Touey nor Lucea had actually seen Phoenixperson's face throughout this entire event so far.

"Yeah, apparently," Touey said. "I guess the message behind your opener really resonated."

"Message?" Phoenixperson scratched their head, confused.

"Ahhh you people just don't understand the true beauty of the Aquilliano-Osarian crossover that is the Diamond Street Players," Lucea scoffed.

"You people?" Touey said, raising an eyebrow.

Lucea hurled another cushion at him. "You know what I mean, you ass."

Phoenixperson leaned closer to Touey and whispered softly "did she mean... superheroes?"

* * * * *

The following day started... less than ideally. After being detained at Echodale Interdimensional, Lucea had a brief spike of panic. This would not have been helped when she was questioned and told she would not be permitted entry to The Plough Islands, and would thus not be able to take part in the yacht race event.

"Luce, you're not coming?" Touey asked her as she was led out.

"Nah," she said, twisting her body slightly in the grasp of the two security officers. "Something about international relations and me playing in IFCF games in AO or something. Didn't realise they were this serious about it all."

"Should I call my uncle?" Touey ran a hand through his hair, nervous.

"No point." Lucea shrugged. "Anyway, check you out. 'ShOuLd I CaLL mY uNcLe?' ahaha, you sound like a real dick right now, man."

Touey laughed. "I guess I do, huh?" he said, speeding up to get ahead of Lucea and the security officers. "They sending you straight back or..." he trailed off.

"Not sure, actually. I'm sure we can convince them to hold me until after the event."

"Aw, romantic." Touey said.

"If I had a cushion, I'd throw it at you."

* * * * *

As it turned out, the day got much better. Despite being a man... uh... woman... down, the Osarian team of Touey and Phoenixperson performed well enough in practice-slash-training. Though Touey was still not exactly confident of victory, despite the name of their vessel: Final Victory. An irony not lost on Touey, who had winced upon seeing it before boarding for training. Touey's silver medal in Gortolekua was the Osarian team's only medal so far of any variety, and he was determined to see the team win at least a couple more before the festival was over.

It was a strange feeling for Touey, really. Growing up where he did, and who he grew up as, had made him painfully aware of his own mediocrity. He knew he enjoyed privilege that few others would, or could, ever experience, and realised that he... didn't really deserve it. Phoenixperson, on the other hand, was extraordinary. Not necessarily in ability -- Touey could plainly see that this person was absolutely not a superhero; he was mediocre, not stupid -- but in attitude. Part of him envied Phoenixperson's bravery in living what they perceived to be their reality so unashamedly.

Remarkably, nobody in Sutton seemed bothered by this either. There was a strange feeling of, well, not quite normalcy but something like that. Here, Touey wasn't "a Lupin", he was just "that foreign bloke here for the yacht race". Locals had little to no interest in him specifically, which was strangely comforting. At home, he drew attention, and those paying it were generally underwhelmed by his mediocrity. Here, there was no such incongruence. Though he was amused at the occasional thumbs ups and encouraging smiles and gestures that Phoenixperson drew. Phoenixperson, naturally, replied only with strange screeching sounds that Touey assumed were ... phoenix calls?

Lucea called that evening, from the airport in Echodale. She was about to board a flight back to Osarius. "Ah they are sending you back, then," Touey sighed.

"Yep," she replied. "Weird that being an internationally recognised footballer has worked against me here, huh?"

"I... What?"

"Well usually, it comes with... perks?"

"Wouldn't know," Touey said.

Their conversation was brief, interrupted by a shout in the background on Lucea's end and followed by a hasty "gotta go". Sadly, Phoenixperson was not in the mood for chat, and was instead perched -- quite literally -- on a chair facing the window, staring at the cityscape in the fading light.

"Hey, uh... Fee..." Touey said. No response. "You ok, bud?" Still no response. "Alright, I'll just... get some sleep I guess."

"A wise decision," Phoenixperson said.

"Oh so you can still talk?"

"I am busy, Toussaint."

Something about the tone of voice struck Touey as odd, given Phoenixperson's usual... uh... everything. But he forced it down and retired to his room to sleep.

* * * * *

Falling short again the following day didn't put Touey in the best of moods. But he had definitely noticed something about Phoenixperson. Again. And he was pretty sure that it was a factor in the two of them performing well above expectation in the yacht race. It still irked him, falling short of a top three finish again, even though logically, Touey knew that a top ten finish with a shorthanded crew was a good result. Not one he'd be informing his family of, mind you. They'd know anyway, and surely mention it to him at some point, but he wasn't going to be the one to tell them.

Before leaving The Plough Islands, Touey made a note to try and speak to Phoenixperson again that night. Especially important to try if they did that weird perching thing again, he figured. Something was up with them. He shook his head, as if to clear his mind of the notion that Phoenixperson might actually have some sort of supernatural power. That was crazytalk. Right?

Cobre Cook-off

The final battles took place simultaneously, both having the same theme -- that being "unity" -- announced just before the battles begun.

"In the spirit of this festival," said Telesphoré Kana, the N'Katoma delegate assigned to oversee the contest, "we have decided to assign the theme of umoja, or 'Unity', for this final battle. It is our hope that in this contest, despite battling with one another, each entrant has unearthed a deeper connection to their neighbours. A greater understanding, from which we can form stronger bonds, and thus be more together than we have been previously. It is the belief of the Council that Anaia is home, and always has been; even when we did not know it, because home is where your bonds are strongest."

In addition, all entrants taking part in a battle on the day -- that is, the final eight -- were extended honorary membership to the Cobre Culinary Guild (CCG), "in recognition of their creative approach to cuisine, and willingness to share with us", explained CCG chairperson Zandile Makwetu.

After further ceremony -- Cobre people are extra, we cannot help it -- the battles were finally able to begin. After three hours, all had completed and presented their dishes.

The results were as follows:

Day 5 Cutoff

It's great to see that most of the Anaians haven't gotten lost in the (cooking) sauce. One nation appears to be running away with the medals this time around, but it's never too late to catch-up!
