The Gortoleki Football Union
presents
The Gortolekua U-21 National Football Team

So...
What even is Gortolekua?

You find yourself on a boat somewhere in Anaian waters, say near Hodeikoleku, and you see a bay that looks absolutely welcoming—the Rehevä Bay, as many of your geography books call it. That beautiful body of water is calling your name, and you start heading toward that bay, approaching the mouth that leads into the Rehevä Bay, entering via the Eteroa Strait. Just as you make your way into the Eteroa Strait and the sharp calanques that grace most of the shores, a massive missile shoots up (from underwater, mind you) meters away from your vessel, telling you to get the hell away from us.

Gortoleki hospitality at its finest.

That was the case until very recently, thanks to a national opening led by the newly inaugurated Päälehen (what you might call a prime minister) Perry Salonen of the Ecologist Laborers’ Party. Sure, many Gortoleki would love to fire off missiles to anyone entering the Bay again, but it’s a no-can-do to do just that. So why now is Gortolekua going to open up to the world? “Because it’ll be unwise of us not to,” Salonen says, on a clockwork-like basis. So we’re now at a focal point in the nation’s history: Gortolekua is now supposed to be open to “diplomacy” and “talking to other people” (which, honestly, they’ve already been ready, it’s just past governments opposed it). And now there’s a valid reason for a national football team.

Now that you've made it past the potential missile blowing up your ship, Gortolekua is a country that—for whatever reason—chooses vintage over anything else. Sure, they've independently developed high definition television, satellite radio and other modern technological services that are taken for granted by many across the multiverse, but you'll rarely, if ever, find a Gortoleki using such a thing. Four-three aspected television, vinyl LPs, CDs, and early internet aesthetics with the blazing fast speeds of today are the norms in this Anaian nation. Fashion-wise, cuffed jeans and thrifted trainers are galore alongside corduroy skirts and esquired leather boots. Mainstream Gortoleki fashion is best compared to the prevalent university fashion choices across many liberal arts departments and college radio stations.

But beyond the institutionalized hostility toward foreigners imposed by generations of governments, the perceived pretentiousness that originates from the average Gortoleki's fashion sense, and the intra-national rivalry between the Gortola in the north and Olekua in the south, split by the Eteroa Strait, Gortoleki people are...warm. They'll help you out on the street if you're lost—before telling you to stop wasting their time. They'll offer a warm plate of food to someone in need before rushing you to wash dishes faster. They'll tell you they care about your utmost well-being while also roasting the living crap out of you. They care, even if it seems like they don't.

A brief national footballing history

As a philosophy, that Gortoleki tough love is what makes football— Gortolekua’s most popular and beloved sport—special in the country. It’s one of a few things Gortola and Olekua both agree on. Compassion for their opponent as people, ruthlessness for their opponents as players. You'll see some of the nastiest, yet fairest, tackles from a Gortoleki centre-back tracking back their opponent, or simulations that are reasonable from strikers and forwards. If the ball is well and far away, it's an insult to the game to dive, but if there's a chance where it looks like the ball is close? Prepare for an acting performance unlike any other. There's a respect for the beautiful game and its hideous counterparts among Gortoleki players and overall genuine excitement for bringing this brand of football to the multiverse.

Following a third place finish Until very recently, the nation had no sort of national league, instead relying on the 10 provincial leagues for a league fix. Now entering its second season, the newly-created Ohorekunnia is where all but two of the Young Lynxes are sourced for this inaugural U-21 national team. Of the two not from the top flight, or an academy associated with said top flight club, one plays in Xanneria and the other plays in the Gortoleki second division: the Igonousta.

Coaching

For a U21 team that is meant to foster the future of Gorotleki football, the GFU has hired a specialized coach to lead these Young Lynxes in their first ever foray in the legendary tournament that is the Di Bradini Cup. Kasper Espino, a 27-year-old recent graduate from the Football Management Academy in San Marko, will lead this squad of young, upstart footballers as they hope to achieve total glory. "An injury to my calf prevented any further development of my playing career, but I've always prided myself in learning as much of the game as I can," Espino told GFU.gtk on his appointment to lead the squad. "I know there's a a young, hungry group of footballers looking to bring some good stuff, especially following our performance in the Baptism of Fire. Let's show the multiverse what we're made of."

Tactically, Espino's preferred formation is a 3-5-2, which he prefers for the versatility it gives wingbacks. While dedicated wingbacks are few and far in between, there is the hope that Espino can use the players' youth to make versatile footballers when they return to their clubs.

The Republic of Thibaea Under-21 National Team
For the first time ever, the ANS has organized an U21 entry for Thibaean presence on the international football team, coming just scanting over news broke that the ANS would be lifting the embargo on international tournaments which has been in place since the 87th World Cup; originally the bar was designed to give the Ligue more time to develop its infrastructure and in turn, improve the skills of the clubs and players to allow for enhanced competitiveness on an international scale. A review by the ANS six months ago recommended that after all these years, the bar be lifted to trial to see if the experiment was worth it. One of the more noteworthy components of this experiment was how the Thibaean youth developmental programs had improved, and one of the surefire ways to demonstrate this would be their presence at the Di Brandini Cup.

Never before as the ANS allowed an international youth team, so to ensure the best performance in their debut, they have brought on Josu Pelley, the former striker star of Persan FC from the last decade, often notable for his off and on the field leadership abilities and superior tactics that allowed him to develop into the third-all time highest scorer in Persan history. He's spent the last 11 year since his player-retirement working through the Ligue at variety of coaching positions, mostly in the 2nd Tier or lower, but last year was brought onto Valderoure and is mostly the one credited for their exceedingly expectational display that saw them finisn in the Top 5. Notably, Valderoure developed a penchant for winning notable matches where they were the underdog, but not stringing together consistence. While that may allow for a niche type of success domestically, such displays would assuredly doom the U21 team here; hopefully they can channel the same titan-killing abilities, but there are no dreams of their future; in pre-tournament interviews Pelley openly stated that this will be very much a trial run for how the ANS and Ligue organize youth programs in the future, and they will simply be trying to put out their best performances.

The Starblaydia national football team factbook will tell you more about the team, their style, culture, fans, and history than I can ever write in a simple roster post. If you need more background information or just fancy browsing 17 RL/300 IC years of role-played football history, that's a fairly decent place to look. Otherwise drop me a message on Discord or, failing that, shoot a TG over.

I Give My Opponent Permission
(and actively encourage them) To:

GodMod Any scoring events
RP injuries to my players
Give Red & Yellow Cards to my players (Within reason; they're not remotely a dirty side overall)
GodMod Other Events for Humorous Intent

Notes:
1) Starblaydia's style modifier is +3
2) The best starting eleven are numbered 1-11 in bold, and opaque in the line-up graphic. 'Ideal' like-for-like substitutes are semi-transparent.
3) I actively encourage that if you RP first you pick my scorers (if any) and their style of goal. Really, please choose my scorers. So often I read RPs where my opponent writes "Starblaydia scored" and I find it so, so much more enjoyable when a name is picked for me.
4) * Denotes female, denotes elf, ^ denotes dwarf.
5) Before each match, in between the national anthems and kick-off, the entire 23-man squad will perform the Raiigar, one of Starblaydia's traditional war-dances.
6) If you need a name for a player to do a specific thing in the match, some vague suggestions are at the bottom of the infobox on the right.

Starblaydia's youth team history is a very long one, but the statistic of just three titles in their near three centuries shows it's not quite as noble and glorious as one might expect from a country that has managed to win more major championships than any other at senior level. As passionate and as fervent as Starblaydia supporters are, the Under-18 and Under-21s side have not managed to draw in quite the same excitement among football fans, although the younger side has largely been much more successful in recent editions.

Two-time KarlingSport Galactico Manager of the Season and former manager of Salstead and Savigliane, Tlanx-Nulzk keeps their streak of S-nations alive by taking the reigns and becoming the first non-Starblaydi coach of the national team in their three hundred year history. An attacking-focused manager who likes to play a 4–3–3 and advocates for social, political and human rights causes, it's a venture into Tlanxball for the five-time world champions, looking to a well-regarded and, in Saviglane, much-loved coach.

Lining up as a 4-3-3, fully expect the team to transition to a 3-2-5 in attack as Soule bombs forward to leave a back three, and Halleck-Winter ghosts forward to join the front lines and bring that overload at just the right point. Already a star at senior level with 15 goals in 22 appearances, Hassan Al Faizan has everything on his shoulders as he wears the captain's armband.

ediraf innovated beyond all competitors with the Generation Five series of football kits, with this iteration - Five-S - first debuted at the 3rd CAFA Cup.
Each round-necked shirt is individually patterned with the inspiration of the purple orchid, Laelia Starblaydia, unique on every kit, whether worn by superstar athletes or dedicated fans wanting to wear the colours of their country. The away kit, in yellow-gold and black to match the other colours of the national flag, features a much more defined geometric pattern with the classic collar tinged delicately with a vibrant splash of purple. The all-green goalkeeper kit, too, shows off a patterned gradient design, with the entire collection (again with rainbow laces as a symbol of diversity and inclusion) putting Starblaydia and ediraf right back at the top of the fashion stakes.

(Puppet of Zeta Reka)

Capital.Cove
DBC 53

Background & History
The Free Land of Capital Cove
, known by colloquially as, “the Cove," is a northwestern Esportivan republic. The nation has close ties with the nearby government of Zeta Reka and Hügeltaldom, with the later responsible for the existence of the former. Capital Cove was a free economic zone in the socialist era created by Hügeltaldom to promote economic growth. A process known as Hügeltalianization was employed, leading to a genocides against the then ethnic majority of the area, the Gamlefolk.

The Republic of the Cove was given internal political autonomy thanks to actions by former Rekan supreme leader Gregori Talić. Capital Cove and the militant arm of its underground independence movement were seen as a threat to Socialism, and Talić was brought down by the decision. New leaders increased militarization in the area, and committed a second set of killing. The actions by the Rekan government prompted condemnation by powerful forces. Zeta Reka’s later governments granted independence to the area thirty seven years before DBC 53.

As an independent state, Capital Cove continued to be a part of Zeta Reka's economic framework. Even after the fall of socialism and the introduction of capitalist policies in Zeta Reka itself, the Cove remains an important trading parter with Zeta Reka. Rekan businesses are in operation all around the country, and the location acts in some circumstances as a tax haven. Oil exports to Zeta Reka are a large part of an independent Cove's economic ethos. The oil industry is controlled by a state co-owned company, Cove Petrol. In recent years a push for greater manufacturing has developed.

The government itself, controlled by the dominant Free Cove Party, is right wing, capitalist, moderately permissive, power-loving, and supportive of new age woo. The policies of the party can be attributed to the deceased political kingpin Gunther Ibach. President for a combined total of fifteen years, Ibach served as president twice, and passed away two years ago.

Capital Cove’s style of football at the club level is built around simple maneuvers and tactics done as well as possible. The Cove’s teams usually line up in 4-3-3 systems or 4-4-2s depending on the side’s confidence with longer balls and midfielders. Cove Football, the group in charge of the National Team, and governing body of the sport in Capital Cove, wanted to use any and all tournaments to create a vision for football in the Cove. In order to create a vision, they hired former Zeta Reka National Team head coach Marko Dusan to become the “Director” for the National Team, and its youth branches.

A former Baptism of Fire runner up, Dusan was eager to use the Cove as a blank slate. The Cove’s youth system was injected with Rekan staff members. The head coach former goalkeeper Janko Kovačević. Kovačević was assisted by former Rekan National Team striker Stajkwon Hokwok, who could be a leader one day. The goalkeeping coach was former Zeta Reka Division 2 champion Mate Jazvić. The head of Youth Development, Alek Regnersen, was taken from domestic club Brodenbach United FC.

Dusan’s plans for the seniors are replicated somewhat at the junior level, with a 4-2-3-1. One central midfielders is defensive, never straying more than around ten yards from the backline. Another midfielder in the holding area is to make more passes and plays up the pitch. The attacking midfielder is to both to link with the more balanced midfielder and at other times play in the box. Wingers are not to travel backward too far, instead looking for crosses. Senior friendlies against Zeta Reka & Hügeltaldom also employ a 4-3-2-1 shape from time to time.

Home Away

Manager
Faeron Soldarian
Age: Elf
Soldarian has taken to management like a fish to water, taking the Marauders U21 side to the knockouts in their first foray back into the international scene in many decades and then in the last tournament managed to ride their luck and skill all the way into a Final appearance, but ultimately fell just short of bringing the title back to the Eternal Empire. The football acumen that Faeron accrued during his playing days has adjusted well into the transition to a manager and he looks to be making good on the talent that the VSC must have seen before his appointment two tournaments ago.

Assistant Manager
Kasper Volheim
Age: 44
The experience of dealing with youth teams, even if it was only as just an assistant manager, paid off quite well for Volheim as he is now a key fixture in the national team program and likely to stay so long as the success at both the youth level and the senior level sustains itself. His ability to communicate well with the youth players definitely augments Faeron's sheer footballing intelligence and the two make quite the formidable pairing as the braintrust of the team.

Keepers
GK: Caspar Engström, age 19, Holdenburg Image
GK: Ines Meyer, age 19, Soldarian FC (F)
GK: Li Lindholm, age 19, Rolalas FC (F)
So we begin again and with almost the entire squad aging out of the eligibility of the squad, there are going to be a lot of holes to try and fill, the first being that in net. Caspar Engström has the edge in, having been in with the team since it was brought back from inactivity as well as training with one of the best clubs in the game in Holdenburg in Eura. Meyer has a lot of potential but has not played with the senior team as of yet, which is a similar problem with Lindholm and Rolalas. However in her time with the youth and reserve team, Meyer has shown better instincts than Lindholm and looks to be the sure number two, should Caspar need be replaced for any reason.

Defenders
CB: Franziska Maurer, age 19, Duke of the North Image (F)
CB: Samira Lindström, age 21, Raynor City United (F)
CB: Garoa Cruz, age 19, Club Atlético Bexar (F)
L/CB: Thorsten Baier, age 18, Mar Sara FC
R/CB: Hilding Strömberg, age 20, SC Rinaldi
R/CB: Florian Beike, age 19, Turoki Tide Image
To be a Vanorian defender is to ask to go against the very nature and footballing culture of an empire, of a longstanding history of being a team that likes to hold possession or press on the attack. Yet there always must be those who play back and defend rather than get the glamour of being an attacking player with goals and assists to have people sing of their laurels and importance. It will be a group that is full of question marks and half of the players who will be playing out of their natural position or the one they play with their clubs. Samira Lindström will be the stalwart in the middle with Beike to her right, the two holdovers from last tournament. The third spot will go to Maurer who was part of a defense that only conceded nineteen times in thirty matches last season, showing that she has the natural talent to hopefully slide into the backline and keep all the cohesion together. Hilding Strömberg will probably be the first defender off the bench, getting time with Rinaldi's first team last season and in an ultimately impressive defensive unit in the usually very offense orientated Premiership.

Midfielders
LW: Izabelle Jönsson, age 20, Hondo FC (F)
AML: Phillipp Kohl, age 18, Mar Sara FC
D/MC: Savannah Jönsson, age 19, Soldarian FC (F)
MC: Hans Sørlie, age 20, Ibini FC
MC: Julia Strömberg, age 19, Hondo FC (F)
MC: Carissa Mercado, age 18, FC Capri (F)
A/MC: Treviño Muñiz, age 19, Oslograd Academy Image
A/MC: Sabrina Baader, age 19, Rolalas FC (F)
RW: Aldin Lindberg, age 20, Raynor City United
A/MRLC: Dominik Sommer, age 19, Soldarian FC
This is where perhaps the squad will either grow into themselves or completely fall apart, as the entire starting midfield from the team that made the Final is gone. Enter Dominik Sommer to be a superstar in the making, as he has all the tools to play anywhere in the midfield or further up in the attack, besides an out and out striker. In a move to be more on the attack, young Kohl from Mar Sara will be given the go ahead on the left to use his speed and crossing ability, while Treviño Muñiz starting as the attacking mid might ruffle some feathers due to geopolitics, but he is the best of the two options. In the middle, there is quite the choice, but Savannah Jönsson has shown a lot of promise at being an interrupting presence in the middle as an anchorwoman, letting the much more offensive minded Julia Strömberg to showcase her dribbling and playmaking abilities. Carissa Mercado and Aldin Lingberg both look ready to step into the lineup, yet it looks like it will take a lot of work to displace the players that are in front of them in the pecking order.

Forwards
AML/ST: Lucas Winkel, age 19, Stein-los Turkish Image
ST: Malin Telle, age 21, Soldarian FC (F)
ST/AMC: Julia Hahn, age 19, Hondo FC (F)
ST: Klara Holmberg, age 19, FC Yassaca Image (F)
Holmberg proved her worth last tournament and now finds herself as not only a starter but as the focal point of the attack for the Marauders and being asked to lead the line. Playing with Yassaca might mean playing for a big fish in a small pond but it has given her the mentality on what it means to be a winning team and how to handle those sort of expectations, which few others in the pool for this tournament have. Lucas Winkel exploded onto the scene last season with Turkish's youth team, gathering double digit goals and looking quite lethal in front of net as well as comfortable enough on the left wing to be a viable option there in a sole striker formation, getting him the nod. Julia Hahn actually played a few games for Hondo last season and grabbed a few goals in various competitions, meaning she is likely to be chosen if the side is in need of a late goal either a like for like sub or to come in on as a third striker and a change of formation.

Presenting: Kobalt Isles U21 Soccer Team!

Coach: Matthew Lain, 40 years old. Matthew is an often exasperated but thorough coach who's at least gonna make sure these kids have fun.

Captains: Jeremías Miriam, Veronica Madrid

Starters in bold, subs are underlined, reserves are just regular text
Strikers:
Mauricio Elvira - 18 - efficient movements and solid ball distributor who's been close with Julio Freixa his whole life
Julio Freixa - 19 - 20 - Large framed athlete who can close distance in a hurry, big leg, primary scorer
Thiago Andino - 17 - Young buck who's way too interested in festivities to take soccer too seriously, but has a high ceiling when focused

Melanie Seco - 17 - Quicker than fast, decent scorer
Carmen Ruiz - 18 - Solid ball placement, but not very athletic

Justin Natalia - 17 - Extremely talented but unfocused

Midfielders
Veronica Madrid - 18 - solid ball distributor and one of the more technically sound players here despite her youth. Aspirations of playing abroad.
Eliana Sainz - 19 - Good complementary piece
Leila Arboleda - 20 - Disciplined and regimented but rarely takes initiative outside her assignment

Isaias Aguinaldo - 17 - Solid fundamentals and good "twitchy" quickness
Eva Alguacil - 16 - Potential top talent but won't see much playing time due to her youth

Aarón Graciela- 18 - Youngster who's always outside, he won't get much playing time but he's great in the locker room

Defenders
Jeremías Miriam - 20 - Probably the most talented player here, enigmatic personality and known philanthropist. Heir to the isles' former "monarchy." Big-bodied center who can control the middle of the field to an extent
Lila Navarro - Great feet, thrives on forcing defenders to pass the ball out
Alina Cambeiro - 20 - Speedster of a wingback, tends to play a bit undisciplined but makes up for it with some nice highlight reel type stuff
Rafael Capmany - 19 - solid wingback, tends to get lost in the woods, but he doesn't mind

Ian Alguacil - 20 - Probably the last soccer he'll ever play, but Alguacil is just happy to be here
Franco Juderías - 16 - Excellent at climbing trees and avid outdoorsman, he's glad the field's outdoors

Goalkeeper:
Emilio Luciana - 16 - Intuitive and athletic from a young, Luciana may struggle due to his youth but everyone's excited to see how he performs.

Hi ESF, I noted that Vdara withdrew from the competition by editing their post instead of posting it separately, and by my count I noted that it might possibly have dropped to 31 participants, assuming Chrom revives their CTE'd puppet. Could that be verified? If we are indeed a nation short, I would like to be placed on the waitlist, and can furbrish a roster within the next 12 hours in the spirit of the signup process.

I will just not put a roster for now in case of spam (and also because I am outside), but if someone beats me to it after ESF confirms that we are indeed one less nation, then I don't mind if they are placed in the competition instead.

General Playing Style: The former national goalkeeper has been involved in the Under-18 leagues, and was the leader behind the reform of the Under-18 leagues. With the reduction in league size, the clubs was generally more symmetrical, and therefore, the team is less focused on attacking as compared to before. Focusing on passing and possession, the team tends to switch between defensive mode and counterattacking strategy rather easily.
Formations: 4-3-3

Fans
Poafmersian fans are crazy about football, and their loud cheers ring about in the stadiums they visit. They are very willing to disturb the peace in the area to celebrate their win after matches, so matches are best held in the afternoon or early evenings. Apart from that, they do pick up after themselves, and prevent causing much trouble apart from celebrating. You can be assured, however, that they would be travelling around to support their team, so do reserve half the spots in stadiums for them because they would pack it to the brim.
