Welcome to the White Winter Queendom of Græntfjall for the 16th edition of the Under-18 World Cup, sponsored by the Regional Transit Corporation of Banija.

Format

The tournament format is a single round robin group stage, followed by a round of 16 knockout bracket, plus a 3PPO. Tiebreakers are goal difference, head to head results, followed by an IC coin toss (OOC simulated game)

Schedule

Daily cutoff will be at 1600 UTC.

13 April: MD1 (1v4, 2v3)
15 April: MD2 (4v3, 1v2)
18 April: MD3 (2v4, 3v1)

20 April: Ro16 (A1vH2, B1vG2, etc.)
22 April: Quarterfinals
24 April: Semifinals
25 April: 3PPO
26 April: Final
Rosters

Please consider posting a roster (even if you don't plan on RPing!). It will help your opponents. It does not need to be complex. For a tournament like this, you would typically choose about 23 players (including 3 goalkeepers), though OOCly you can bring as many (or few) players as you like. Please consider some basic RP permissions along these lines:
Code: Select all
If my opponent RPs first they may...
Choose my goalscorers Y/N
Give out yellow cards to my players Y/N
Give out red cards to my players Y/N
Injure my players Y/N
Godmode scoring events Y/N
Godmode other events Y/N

Godmoding refers to wacky or unusual incidents outside the realm of normal football. An own goal is probably not a godmode. An own goal that bounces off a passing goose into the net is probable a godmode. If in doubt, message your opponent and ask. Final decision rests with the host.

Roleplaying

You may begin roleplaying. Roleplaying will give your team more points and (theoretically) more chance of winning, though the random number generator basis of the scorinator means there's no guarantee! There will be optional RP prompts posted with each cutoff; you do not have to respond to them and can earn full RP bonus without doing so, but they're there for inspiration in case you want them.

Eligibility

In IC terms, this competition is open to any player below the age of 18 or below at the end of the calendar year in which it is being held. Given the fluidity of NS time and different ageing rates across competitions (not to mention species) there is no OOC enforcement here, but if your roster contains players marked over the age of 18 then unless some clever IC explanation is offered it will be assumed to be a lazy copy and paste and earn a poor bonus!

Welcome to the White Winter Queendom of Græntfjall. With a population of over 100 million, Græntfjall is one of the major nations of the Pavola subregion of Rushmore, bordering Tikariot (mostly friendly), Nyowani Kitara (mostly unfriendly), and Bollonich (mixed, good relations over a chessboard, less so when we try invading their naval base) among others.

Græntfjall is a constitutional monarchy that claims one of the oldest parliaments in the world, the Thing, currently led by the Progressive-Liberal centrist party in coalition with the right-wing Liberal Conservative Alliance. Prime Minister Kaija Michaelsdóttir has led an ambitious reform agenda and had repeated conflict with labor unions over her policies. Disruption to the tournament by wildcat transport strikes may be unavoidable, but security is on high alert and there are no reports of terrorist activity likely.

Græntfjallers are (in mythic lore) descended from Viking sackers; academic historians suggest actual proto-Græntfjallers were likely merchant traders. Græntfjallers employ a patronymic (or occasionally matronymic) naming system, and speak a language (Græntfjaller) that bears a striking resemblance to poorly translated Icelandic. The country's geography features a bank of mountains (the Græntfjaller Alps) that dominate the southern half of the country and create a frigid microclimate. Græntfjaller winters are bitter and icebound; even their summers are cool. This tournament is being held in spring, meaning weather will be typically dry but chilly. Mornings may be icy but by evening there will typically be clear pitches.

Spring for Græntfjallers is a time of renewal associated with the Christian festival of Easter; though Græntfjall is a modern multicultural nation with Jewish, Buddhist and Violetist communities, as well as a large Muslim minority of several million, the majority of Græntfjallers are (more or less observant) Viridian Catholics. Easter traditions you might see are painted eggs, ryegrass switches, and paper cuttings in decorative shapes. And if you see lots of tiny witches running around, don't panic! It's popular for children to dress up as witches. They can usually be dissuaded from cursing you with the gift of a chocolate egg.

Græntfjallers are broadly welcoming of visitors, and have now hosted several international tournaments so are used to new arrivals. Non-white and gender-non-confirming individuals may receive stares or whispers but should not be subject to violence or persecution; non-humans are unusual, but not unknown. In general, Græntfjallers can be a bit mercenary: no matter what your race, religion, or gender identity, so long as you've a króna in your pocket you will be welcomed with a smile (and once it's run out, kicked out with a discourteous boot).

In terms of eating, Græntfjaller cuisine is bland and stodgy, but multiculturalism, particularly in cities, has brought more variety. Similarly, while once regarded as a country where vegetarians and vegans would struggle for eating options, it's becoming increasingly common and restaurants will offer more than limp salads and blank stares. Smoking indoors is not permitted. Personal consumption of marijuana is legal. Coffee is more popular than tea, and beer more popular than wine.

Youth football doesn't have a high status in Græntfjall. The country has no organized youth league and most young players toil away on loan contracts with lower league sides, sit on the bench of bloated first team squads, or just head overseas in search of better playing opportunities. Despite this, the country has had recent success, and is the current defending world champion in both U-18 and U-21 football. Græntfjall has no major tradition of hooliganism and there should be no crowd trouble. There have been unfortunate incidents of racist chanting and religiously motivated abusive comments but the tournament will use a zero tolerance policy and eject and ban any such perpetrators.

Those who've visited Græntfjall before will remember stadiums like the Grand National Stadium and Florus Stadion. But they won't be used here, until the final stages: importantly, reflecting the relatively low status of youth football, as well as clashes with ongoing domestic tournaments, all the stadiums used will be secondary: lower level clubs, university stadiums, and training grounds of major clubs. Don't expect massive arenas seating tens of thousands: most will have attendance limits of no higher than 20,000, and most closer to 10,000. Local attendance for anything other than the Snow Pups' own games and rivalry games will probably be low, which does at least mean there will be plenty of seats available for visiting fans.

Important IC limits for ALL teams:
  • No COVID or any other pandemic.
  • No destructive violence. Your fans can scuffle (they will then be ejected and deported) but no riots destroying city centers or fires burning down stadiums.

Please note this is an OOC choice: ICly you can assume all games have been pre-scheduled. Stadiums are ranked in descending order of capacity: the top one will be 15,000, next 10-15,000, down to sub-10,000 ones listed fourth.

After not having participated in the past two editions of the U-18 World Cup, the Snowy Owlets are back in action, hoping to show to the world that Tikariot is not just a force to be reckoned with on the senior level, but also in the youth scene. After sensationally winning the Campeonato Rushmori Juvenil Sub-17 XIV, the majority of the squad for the U-18 World Cup will consist of the players that went through the CRJ without dropping a single point, making them one of the most exciting youth squads that Tikariot has ever fielded!

Image
The same the fans of the senior team, the fans of the Owlets also deserve particular mentioning. Not only are they renowned for their chants, but they are also bringing the Thunder Clap (Click here for example) to the stadium, something that the players join in as a pre-game ritual that has left an impression on the opponents and opposing fans more than once (OOC: similar to the Haka of the New Zealand All Blacks). The players will form a triangle near the kick off circle and lift their arms, which the fans do as well. Then a lone drum will start to signal the rhythm and both players and fans alike will move in unison, each clap accompanied with a loud cry, the claps (and cries) speeding up, creating an overwhelming sense of impending doom.

Image
Roar Krogstad - 40 Image
After a short professional career with the Fort Viljan Northern FC that was cut short by a severe knee injury, Krogstad devoted himself to coaching the Tikariotian youth teams. Just like all other Tikariotian national teams, he is devoted to the flexible 4-3-3 system that is permeating the entire pyramid, enabling the different age levels to all implement the same philosophy to ensure consistency and coherence throughout the players' careers.

The Tactics

Efnak national teams, and the country as a whole, fundamentally believe in a 4-4-2 system, based predominantly around a counter-attacking philosophy with creativity coming from wingers, strikers, and overlapping fullbacks. While there is a growing movement within the domestic game around adapting the system into a more fluid, possession-based attacking system, manager Kahakne is still from the orthodox school, and as such this team, like all national team squads at the moment, will look to bunker in and defend, especially against superior opponents as expected in international competition.

The Fans

While the Les Ccassalt'off don't draw as well as the Dumo hom Ccahor domestically, the team is still incredibly well-supported, especially in international competition. The main feature of Efnak support is the Ssaddar, a call-and-response performance involving the full squad prior to matches both at home in Efnakia and during international tournaments where Efnak fans are expected to be in the majority.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:

Choose my scorers
Godmod scoring events
RP injuries to my players (please TG/DM me to let me know, I determine severity)
Give yellow cards to my players
Give red cards to my players (up to 2, please TG/DM me to let me know)
Godmod other events (TG/DM me if they're interesting)

(Also available for contact on the NSSports discord)

Notes:
When abbreviating first names, "Ss", "Cc", and "Dd" are all Efnak letters and should be treated as such e.g. "GK #1 Dd. Kahadfo"
When referring to players with the same first initial and last name, the abbreviation should be clarified through use of their patronymic e.g. "ST #17 MaH. Kaccoddtob"

Tyskerlund U-18 NT
With Tyskerlund signing up for the Baptism of Fire and World Cup, everyone thought that it should be enough international competition for Tyskerlund to introduce itself. However, the SLVT decides that younger players should also earn the chance to play. And with the Under-18 World Cup looming over, it was the perfect moment to start Tyskerlund's international career. Eighteen players have been handpicked by the SLVT along with two key figures as manager and assistant manager. How far will this team go? Well, how far does this team want to go? It's all in their hands.

RW - Sienna Diamanti

Tactical Set-Up

The young Starsian side is a very skilled team with a very high team chemistry and morale combining it with their quick paced game they are an opponent for all teams to watch out for.
They play in a 4-3-3 which through the match can be changed to various other formations suiting the game that they play however they are an offensive team loving to have possesion of the ball.
This Starsian side is known to play great but very fair soccer respecting every opponent and with their disciplined training they are most likely to make the game rather then reacting to their opponents.

Left Corner Taker: Mary Bloodworth
Right Corner Taker: Mary Bloodworth
Penalties: Astrid Lindgren
Direct FK Taker: Zoey Cometti
Indirect FK Taker: Mary Bloodworth
Most likely to foul/be booked: Sita Goodwill
Most likely to shoot: Horus Houdini
Most likely to score from close-range: Astrid Lindgren
Most likely to score from long-range: Louise Vendetta
Most likely to be fouled: Mavis Gearsley
Most likely to attempt the spectacular: Sienna Diamanti

Star players

Jordan Glendyss
Born as the son of the best coach of the country in this era there is alot of pressure, however this laid back guy ain't the person to feel any pressure out there on the field.
He is unlike his mother a center back and has an amazing vision and ball control allowing him to be both creative but also very dynamic as a player and create plays from the back.
With his experience from earlier in the U18 team he also loves to help out the younger members and bring out their potential aswell like a real team player.
When he is not on the field he can be found at the beach, this dude loves the sea and he has been into surfing since young age and sees it as a way to release stress and also just have fun.

Zoey Cometti
Wherever the action is you can find this girl, Zoey Cometti was a bit of an accidental hidden talent in Universal FC that never came to blossom until the end of last season.
Not only are her plays active, quick and very precise but she also has the knowledge of her teammates and can anticipate on their actions even mid-match.
Often she is outside sitting in the sun with sunglasses and a computer, she loves analyzing data but she doesn't want to just know stuff, she wants to use that knowledge on the field.
Zoey can precisely name every player their average speed, jump height and even point out repeated moving patterns and this makes her an excellent player for the midfield in the team.

Mavis Gearsley
There is no way that you do not know her if you are into Starsian soccer, she has been the rising star last season and even award winning at the end.
While she was not part of the championship team she was such an exceptional player that she could simply not be excluded here with her insane speed and great scoring ability.
Even if she is a winger her technical ability combined with her speed does make her perhaps even more scary then a regular striker on itself with a stunning 39 goals in 34 matches last season making her the second most scoring player in the whole league with an average of more then 1 goal per match.
She is destined for great things, time will only make this girl better then she already is.

Astrid Lindgren
Some people refer to her as Holly Moonlights little sis, even if she is not she is strikingly similar to Blizzard Academy's ace striker and aims to be just as good and perhaps even better then her.
Astrid last year was one of the rookies and outplayed by a large number of veterans that took up spots but now she is one of the main players on the team and her scoring ability is much needed here.
With her technical skill but also physical power she can be a balanced mix between a technical and a rough player but in the end she is more one of the brain then the physical power.
Her qualities are in her excellent positioning, anticipation on the opponent and ability to play with the whole team which her older counterpart at times does lack with her hunger for goals.
Whether she will be better or not, she is already a national star and hopes to play many matches to come for the team.

The Stadium, Castle Hills Stadium

Our home ground will be the Castle Hills stadium which has place for as much as 85,000 soccer fans from all over the multiverse and between the central forest and the city of Greenville in The 14 Stars.
All junior team matches when possible are played here because of the history they made here and the fact that the very foundation of this team was made in this stadium many many years ago.

Kriegiersien U18 Football Nationalteam

The new Olympic perspective team of Kriegiersien. Star of the team is Xian Cheung, who already played as ringer at the IAC with the previous Olympic team, where he was Top Scorer of the team, but went out unfortunately with the first loss in the competition in the round of 16.
With Dumm Grumsh there is for the first time an Orc in the perspective team, the rest are male humans.

All players are from the youth centre of Kriegiersien national sokker champion Timesteam.

Kriegiersien always plays in their black Olympic rags.. jerseys they use for every sport.

If they can't play in black and neither nude, as nudity is mandatory in Kriegiersien, they try to steal the next best tricot as alternative for black.

Cordian National Football - U18s

ImageImage
ImageImage
ImageImage

The last U18 World Cup saw a promising Cordian squad enter the knockouts undefeated and seeded third, having outscored their opponents 6 to 1. They looked primed to make a deep run. Drawn against 14 seed Baker Park in the first match, the Cordians were expected to advance, but a late BP goal forced extra time. In the additional thirty, Baker Park dominated play and it was only a matter of time until they converted, taking the 2-1 victory and advancing to the quarters. The loss still stings two years later, and this new squad will be looking to avoid the mistakes of that team.

This team features several players from Lakeside U19, the Cordian youth league team that consistently outperforms in IFCF competition: they're 5-2 in Rising Stars Cup play despite never having been the seeded side. The success of this club has brought some notoriety to the Cordian youth development system and brings hope for the nation's future in international competition. Hailing from that club, Annette Berglund is without a doubt the team's best player. She's an absolute powerhouse, combining pace, physicality, and a knowledge of the game beyond her years into something special. She's expected to start for the U21 team, too, at the next Di Bradini Cup, should the CIFA decide to enter. The only reason she isn't playing for a club at the senior level yet is that she wants to stay with Lakeside, where she's contributed massively to the youth side's RSC runs. Berglund's teammate, Ragna Mikaelsson, is another future prospect with the team in the mold of Sebastian Voll, her primary weapon being a powerful and dangerously accurate shot that tends to surprise opposing keepers.

OOC housekeeping note: Quite a few rosters are not expressing a style modifier (between -5 and +5, from less to more attacking). That's fine and there is no obligation to include one, and all rosters without one will be assumed to be a neutral (0) modifier, but if you do want to use a style mod, please make sure it is clear in the roster, preferably on the first or last line. Thanks!

MD1 prompt

MD1 is scheduled for 12 April. Prompts are here to provide inspiration but are not required and full RP bonus is possible without making use of them.

Young people in Græntfjall traditionally started the day with a breakfast of smoked or dried fish, and strong coffee (though coffee is not native to Græntfjall; much of Græntfjaller history can be explained in terms of invading various foreign countries to acquire more interesting food and drink). Today, young Græntfjallers are much less likely to sit down for a breakfast of herring or mackerel, and more likely to enjoy a range of breakfast cereals such as Cap'n Krakens, Miserable-Os, and Sugar Frosted Honey Nut Extra Crunchy Terfs. Coffee remains popular, though, and medics have expressed concerns about the amount of caffeine consumed by pre-teen children in Græntfjall. Other popular staples are hafragrautur (a hearty oatmeal, sometimes topped with brown sugar or fruit) and skyr (a thick yogurt-like dairy product). Many Græntfjaller parents give their children a spoonful of cod liver oil at breakfast as well; not as tasty as Mighty Morphin' Power Milkmaid Choco Crispy Flakes, but probably a bit healthier!

How do young people in YN start the day, and how have their habits changed over time?

Commonwealth of Baker Park Under 18 National Team

5th & 9th Under-18 World Champions

Baker Park's Modern Era in soccer can be definitively said to have began not in Valanora at the 42nd DiBradini Cup, nor at the 67th Baptism of Fire in Banija & Qasden, but in Abahnfleft at the 5th Under-18 World Championships.

It was at that tournament that the FAC sent its representative squad that included for the first time both young men and women, playing next to one another in the same starting XI, training side by side daily, competing against the best youth teams in the multiverse together.

Winning that tournament was an added bonus to what was a bold experiment for the governing body, as nothing like it had been tested outside of the composition of local recreational leagues for 5-8 year-olds where, especially at the youngest age level, co-ed teams were the norm. Even before the final whistle sounded in the title match, the experiment had been declared a unquestioned success, and the Commonwealth have never looked back since.

It is considered at the FAC Development Charter Training Complex to be the most important competition behind the World Cup and the AOCAF Cup, and for the 16th edition in Græntfjall, the team will for the first time have proof of that importance on their shirts, as two stars will adorn the crest; as only the second nation ever to have won the competition more than once, the national team organization stresses to the players chosen to participate the importance of representing Baker Park with honor, dignity and respect for opponents and officials alike while in pursuit of a third championship.

An Abrupt Formation
Part I, Recognition from the Kaiserin

"This just sounds stupid. I do not see any worth from joining, Geschke."

Says Ann-Katrin Kirschbaum, Die Heilige Kaiserin of Tyskerlund, with the palm of her left hand on her face. Eugen Geschke, one of the somewhat many new managers for football in Tyskerlund, has proposed something that to Kirschbaum, sounds quite stupid. The proposition for Tyskerlund to join the U-18 World Cup. Her thoughts are not without reason, however. Tyskerlund had only somewhat recently ended their first season of a professional football league, the Tyskerlund Erste Liga. Not only that, all of the players there are aged at least nineteen years old. There would be no player with somewhat professional experience for the U-18 team. And there are no academies (At least, not yet) for Tyskerlund to draw younger players from.

Because of this, the players are the problem. There is no recorded Tyskerlunder who not only plays football, but is also eighteen and under. If Tyskerlund wanted to send a team for the U-18 World Cup, they would have to handpick players from the streets, quite possibly. There is also the issue with the national team itself. Tyskerlund didn't even have their national team for the Baptism of Fire and World Cup assembled yet, and entering a U-18 team before the senior team was even created sounded oddly out of place. Which is why Kirschbaum found Geschke's entire proposition for Tyskerlund to enter and send a team to the U-18 World Cup as stupid in the first place.

Geschke however meanwhile, still insisted on Tyskerlund joining and sending a team for the tournament. His thoughts were if that the next batch of players were to receive international experience early, then these players can have an easier time transitioning to the national team in the foreseeable future. He wanted Tyskerlund to invest in the future, and in football itself. And he thought everything can start from this U-18 World Cup, that many other experienced and new nations would also be participating in. However, Kirschbaum didn't think so.

"My decision is final. Tyskerlund will n-"

"Please, Kaiserin! At the very least, think of the many young people who would also want to become professional players. Think of the many fans who have already peaked an interest to football! Could we not at the very least try to keep the gauge between the fans and the sport alive?"

Kirschbaum had a stoic face, but inside her mind, she was quite shocked to see someone cut through her words. Yet, Geschke had a point. If the gauge between the sport and the fans die out, then ramping up interest again wouldn't be as easy. However, she was still against Tyskerlund joining. One side of her mind says that it wouldn't hurt for Tyskerlund to at the least enter one international competition, the other says that Tyskerlund should wait until the Baptism of Fire and the World Cup for their international debut. And then, she made her decision.

".... Alright then, if you heavily say so! Eugen Geschke, you are officially the manager for Tyskerlund in the U-18 World Cup. Gather the players you require along with the staff, and start your preparations. Everything else will be covered by the SLVT. I don't usually give people chances when they cut through my words, but you seem to be different than others who have faced me directly. You are immediately dismissed."

"U-understood, Kaiserin."

Says Geschke as he left the Monarch's Hall in great fear. He could have been seriously punished for objecting through the Kaiserin's words, thank the gods that he was somewhat spared from the Kaiserin's wrath. Among the elden population, she has a reputation of being a terrorizing figure when she is angry, most likely due to her time with the Imperial Ground Force. Either way, he's received the permission from the Kaiserin to form the team he had wanted, and that is all he could really care about.

Let's just hope that his recognition didn't go to waste very soon.

After the senior team performed well at IAC 15, advancing to the quarterfinals, fans of De Jernsmeden are hoping that the U-18 team will make a wonderful run of their own. Tjorl was drawn into Group A, along with StrayaRoos, Adab, and hosts Græntfjall. When asked about their ambitions in the competition, Asurblau Afoln wunderkind Henrik Nordnes said "We strive to always be the best we can be, so we represent Tjorl well. We won't mind if we make a good run of our own, but I think we should think about performing well in the group stage first before we think about anything beyond it."

The Federation of Mertagnian Football Presents...
Image
The Mertagnian National Football Team
for the RTC U18 World Cup XVI

Our History:

Mertagne had a tough time in Tumbra last cycle, echoing a Mertagnian footballing vibe in which the wheels were coming off of the cart. However, a last minute super sub in the form of Ázëwyn Fëanáro and a corruption investigation launched by the government that purged high profile names throughout the FMF on crimes just short of match fixing have cleaned much of the rust off of the FMF, and the newer, sleeker model of Lake Bekk's youngest footballing sibling are looking to emulate the squad of two tournaments ago, which unexpectedly catapulted to stardom and set straight many of their footballing careers.

Our Key(lime) Staff:

Manager: Ázëwyn Fëanáro, 4,091, Image Calming, Sensible, Lithe, Architect
Ázëwyn Fëanáro has proved that she was a fantastic hire for the very top of the Mertagnian international effort, and therefore her years of expertise have been requested to be put to good use in the youth squads. This purpose is two-fold: for one, Fëanáro can whip these squads into shape after a few years sitting on the sidelines, and also she can work with players that may well move on to represent their country in her senior squad in the years to come. If a Starblaydi elf knows anything, it's how to play the long game, and it's the hope that a good performance here in Græntfjall will see Mertagne lifting the trophy once again - a feat they last managed in U-18 World Cup 14.

Assistant Manager: Kylian Forsyth, 31, Image Analytical, Astute, Frail, Tactician
Kylian Forsyth has been the architect of the U-18 team for a number of years, despite having never played a full 90 minutes of football due to a chronic condition. His mind is in better shape than most, however, and the potent combination of Forsyth and Fëanáro has led these two to many a late-night coffee-fuelled session poring over scouting reports, archive footage, tactical books, and a copy of Craziness Encouraged to select the best squad they can for the tournament, and devise the best game plan to face off against some tough competition.

The squad will be playing with a style modifier of +2. Fëanáro is looking for the team to develop their own style as the tournament progresses, but her natural style tips them in favour of the attack.

*Thanks to Ko-oren for the traits data and format. Mertagnian traits follow a [mental][mental][physical][style] format. [c] denotes captain.

Typically, a player closer to the top of the chart within each position is more likely to be picked. This outfit of the Mertagnian team will be playing in a 4-4-2 formation, an old favourite of Fëanáro's, but she's intended to keep the formation fairly loose, attempting to create a rather reactive style of play that should approach and assess each threat as it comes.
If you RP first, you are encouraged to make a team selection that works for you.

A quick look at the team's notes shows...

Most likely to...
Score a goal: Jamie Martix, Kyra Mijancas, Georgina Haynes
Kick off a set piece: Georgina Haynes, Stewart Bickley, Zara Olamendi
Make a magnificent cross: Frank Errington, Christine De Oth, Gordon Isbill
Stop an opposing attack: Graham Marlow, Lurda Duckworth, Susannah Green
Get too stuck in and get a card: Susannah Green, Stewart Bickley, Martin Buytron
Do something out of the ordinary: Jamie Martix, Leonarde Muskar

Sharktail Pre Matchday 1
Press conference with manager.

Date: 11 April
Time: 12 pm Sharktail time

Q 1: Hello, I Syuzana Hamdi from Kota Lama newspaper will ask the first question. How Sharktail preparation has been toward the first matchday tomorrow?

Manager: Well, we start bit late of preparation this time. Not really a proper one if you ask me. The last minute decision to put this team ready for this tournament is totally mess. I really hoping it not being like this but that how it is. Toward the first matchday, if you compare to other team, we might lacking but if you asking me about my satisfaction, this is the best we can be prepared now.

Q 2: I gonna ask one more question, what might be reason of late decision and is there anything to do with only 18 player on roster?

M: The tournament this time totally close up to the important date in Sharktail. As our main squad are mostly 17 and 18, the date is quite near their most important turnout in their life, the national exam. At first,we might thinking of not joining this, but the decision making at the last minute not really like what i expect and most of our main player has being put on holiday for their exam prep. Some of them are able to hold their exam for next year but most of them seem not able to do it so, so we decide to call some of promising 16 years old.

Q 3: I Fahrin Umar from Detik Sukan news. Changing almost 50% of the roster in last minute mostly not end up well. How big they gap of this selected team and the real squad of U-18?

M: If you asking me on how good or bad they are, i not gonna answer it,but i will put it on how good and bad there are at understanding my tactical and planning. We have been sitting together for almost two years, there are mostly able to adapt with my tactical and decision making. As for this new team, less than three weeks, i just can go with this now. What the best i can get from this team, that what i got now.

Q 4: Hello, i Yusri Hanafi from Sultan Sport Times. Are we will put the conclusion with let just take as much experience as you can have from this tournament? It might sound rude but surely we not have high expectations from this squad?

M: Let skip the question. I might gonna answer it after our first match. That's all. And also all other question regarding my tactical decision and expectations, i gonna shut my mouth on that for now. As for now, i gonna end here thank you.

Note: In the Adabian timeline, the U18 World Cup takes place around June-July 2038. Age is as of June 1, 2038.

The Adabian Under-18 National Football Team

When I was playing football I never enjoyed it that much, I was never happy … if I scored two goals, I wanted a third, I always wanted more. Now it’s all over I can look back with satisfaction, but I never felt that way when I was playing.
-Gabriel Batistuta

Demonym: Adabian (plural Adabians)
Association: Adab Football Association (AFA)

BACKGROUND
Faisal al-Ali and his army of youth are back at it again after a third-place finish at the 15th Under-18 World Cup which itself followed second place at the 14th World Cup. With a new golden age appearing to be on the horizon for Adab’s youth players, expectations are high that this latest batch will match, or at least not fall too far short of, their predecessors’ achievements over the last two tournaments. Al-Ali, as always, has cautioned fans against putting their hopes up too high. “They’re youngsters,” the under-18 manager said. “They’re still learning.”

KIT

The national team's kits, designed by Ahmad Enlil (the first President of the Football Association) in 1907, are currently manufactured by Shining Sun Company, owned by Rahman Ashurbanipal, businessman and grandson of Emperor Tizqar III.

STAFF
Manager: Faisal AL-ALI - Male – born April 14, 1975 (age 63)
A friend and former teammate of senior team manager Saad Kaykali at Baghdad City, al-Ali shocked the Adabian football community by taking the under-18 team all the way to the final of the 14th Under-18 World Cup. His success has made al-Ali a dark horse candidate to eventually succeed Kaykali in the senior team, but he insists that he has no greater ambitions and is fully focused on managing the under-18 team.

STADIUM
Image

Adab City Stadium, the pride and joy of Adabian football, was completed in 1940. Located in the northern part of Adab City, the stadium was able to accommodate 40,000 people at the time of its opening. Renovations in 1978 made it an all-seater stadium and expanded its capacity to 55,350. Later it increased to 75,000 following upgrades in 2009-10 and then 76,500 after another upgrade in 2019. It is currently home to the Adabian national football team and Adab City FC.

TACTICS AND FORMATION
The team will use 4-3-2-1, the "Christmas tree" formation, with an emphasis on attacking play and taking advantage of their opponents' mistakes to launch a quick counterattack, marked by rapid passing from the back four - and, if deemed safe enough, long balls - through the midfield and to the front.

It's not your imagination. It really is a "reboot."

The Sarzonian Under 18 national football team is back, and not only is it under new management, it's also got a whole different cast of characters. All new players. Completely different managerial team. And, last but not least, a whole new moniker.

Gone is the name Baby Stars. In its place comes the new name Toddler Stars.

So why the changes? Let's start with the nickname. Incorporated Football Federation Chairman Zack Wilson said upon reviewing the history of world football, he came across entries for an Under 15 World Cup, a competition which took place during Sarzonia's latest, lengthiest period of isolation. Even though there hasn't been serious talk of resuscitating the Under 15 World Cup among footballing circles or more than idle speculation within the halls at the Dave Wilson Athletic Complex, Zack Wilson felt it was important to adopt a different name to reflect the prospect of an even younger Sarzonian national football team.

"What's there younger than a baby? A zygote? I don't think 'Zygote Stars' would be an appropriate nickname," Zack Wilson said. "If there is to be a re-establishment of an Under 15 World Cup, that team should carry the name Baby Stars. We can start calling this bunch the Toddler Stars."

OK, so that's the story behind the name. Now what about the different squad and whole different managerial team?

"We felt it was important for us to continue to develop our depth," Zack Wilson said. "The previous managerial staff was keen on simply replacing the aged out players with newer players but keeping the core intact. We felt it was important to inject fresh new blood into the team and that also extends to the managerial staff." So that means Brayton Aldrich will get the call to manage the Under 18s. The 41-year-old is bringing back a system the Sarzonian national team once made famous in "total football on steroids," expecting his team to play the full 90 minutes focusing on every aspect of the match, including defensive players playing in the attacking third and forwards also playing defence where appropriate.

"I felt it was time for Sarzonia to start going back to its roots as a footballing nation," Aldrich said. "I've been rather concerned about the lack of defence shown by the previous team that competed here, so I wanted to address that straight away." Aldrich added that by sending defensive players forward in his version of that system, he hoped to create matchup problems with the counterattack.

"I figure that we can play an aggressive type of football at both ends," he said. "I value aggression. I value everyone playing with maximum focus and intensity over the course of 90 minutes.

As for the makeup of the team, Aldrich conceded readily that with the majority his players being under 18, focus may not be where he'd want it for a World Cup programme.

"I get it. Raging hormones, short attention spans," he said. "That's all part of the beast with a youthful side."

One thing Aldrich did not address until media asked him about it was the presence of one transgender player and two who identify as non-binary, including starting midfielder Charlie Everly.

"They won their jobs fair and square," he said. "That's the best type of affirmative action I can think of."

THE TUMBRAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM (U18 side)
The Black Egrets

Image

IMPORTANT OOC NOTE: For all intents and purposes, this Tumbra that began contesting in WCQ87 is an entirely new nation. They have no recollection of their earlier exploits from WC70-80, because that simply didn't exist for this Tumbra. Any and all similarities to the nation of the similar name can and should be construed as glitches in the Multiverse. You may, however, make muted references to "having done this before" or something. For a detailed explanation of how this came to be, read these RPs.

Record in U18 World Cups
RTC U18 World Cup 13: 6-1-1, 14GF, 14GA, Champions
RTC U18 World Cup 14: 5-3-1, 23GF, 7GA, Third
RTC U18 World Cup 15: 6-0-1, 23GF, 10GA, Runners-Up
RTC U18 World Cup 16: ?-?-?

In three appearances, Tumbra have never finished outside the top three of the Under-18 World Cup. As Toby Barton, long-time manager of the U18 squad, seeks to keep this record going, he's now turned to dual-nationals, and those who might have otherwise been forgotten by Tumbran football. The general image of a "Tumbran footballer" is a averagely-tall, technically competent player with enough bulk and fleet-footed enough to try and dribble their way out of trouble, who entered their club's academy at the age of 13 or so, turned pro at the age of 18, and left the schooling system behind. Also white. Or black. What does it mean to be a Tumbran footballer, anyway? And who gets to decide it?

Players from 1-11 can safely be assumed to be starters, but pre-match XIs will be posted before every cutoff. Please check my RPs for pre-match lineups. If none are posted, feel free to pick and choose from this side.

Tumbra will name eleven starters and twelve names on the bench, with up to three substitutes. In the unlikely event that they make it to extra time, a fourth substitute will be taken. Tumbra will not play for penalties and will try as often as possible to finish a match in ninety or a hundred and twenty minutes.

"Kylian, can you tell us if you have any hope at all for the squad that you and Fëanáro have put together?"

"We wouldn't have put it together if we didn't have any hope for it. It's got some of the best up-and-coming sporting stars from a variety of backgrounds."

"Is that why you've got someone from a team called, and I quote directly from your teamsheet - 'Girdwood's Academy for Future-Thinking Sportspeople, A Sporting Deductible of Girdwood's Meat Packing'?"

"We held several tryout camps across the nation. Even in Brandistock, where this Academy is located. They clearly field good players, if you're referring to Burro Curwood. We've all had sponsors in the past."

"Have you had a sponsor recently, Mr. Forsyth? Because if you have, you should have disclosed it in the Beesly Enquiry. Are you happy with the result of the enquiry, and with the swiftness that the FMF has expelled those named in it?"

"I personally had nothing to do with any of the illegal activities that were named in that enquiry. In fact, I diligently informed the government's business anti-corruption division of everything I knew about any corruption that was going on in the FMF. As for anyone named in the report, I will not comment. Any further questions about my U18 squad?"

"Is the FMF looking to foster a new set of values in the players now that it's under new management?"

"We're looking to instil the same values as always, which have never come from the top - good professional football. Many of these players have solid careers ahead of them, which might involve the U21 team or beyond. This can be a good springboard for some of the multiverse's best."

"Are you happy with the group lineup? Mertagne have avoided some big names there - Tumbra, Chromatika, Adab, and hosts Græntfjall will be lucky to meet your squad in the later parts of the competition."

"Well, we have to prove we're worthy of getting there first. Unlike, say, a CAFA, our approach to the U18 World Cup changes depending on the squad. I imagine this is true of other nations as well, and like a wine, the quality of the vintage can change wildly depending on the, erm, growing season."

"Do you reckon that the team you've selected is a vintage that you'd find at a fancy restaurant, or a supermarket bargain bin?"

"Well, in this extended metaphor I'd be the sommelier that secretly knows you've got no clue when you talk about a fruity note which lingers on the tongue, but I'd tell you the same thing there as I tell you now - let it breathe. Give these kids some time to work it out, yeah?"

Youth football tournament delayed by industrial action

Matchday one of the Under-18 World Cup, the first football tournament to be hosted in Græntfjall since Baptism of Fire 77, has been delayed 24 hours after a wildcat strike by emergency services personnel. Prime Minister Kaija Michaelsdóttir vented her fury at "irresponsible agitators attempting to strongarm the democratic process" but conceded to the delay in order to ensure safety and security on the opening slate of games. Members of the Armed Forces have been drafted in to provide emergency cover. Michaelsdóttir has been in near-constant battle with labor unions since her election to Prime Minister nearly 2 years ago, succeeding in passing sweeping employment reform measures despite repeated strikes from the more militant unions. After the Fire Brigades Union, Union of Coast Guard Employees, and Union of Anti-Kraken Emergency Personnel finally conceded, a small splinter group of radical activists have engaged in a campaign of flying pickets to try to disrupt what they say is the "total capitulation" of the "main industrial trade union congress".
OOC: MD1 is put back 24 hours, and the entire scheduled shifted back 24 hours. Apologies for the unavoidable delay.
