VWE 13

Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation (RQVF) is delighted to welcome the twenty-eight competing nations of the Volleyball World Expo to the Kingdom of Quebec and Shingoryeo!

As the 'Everything Thread', this place is where you will post your roster and RPs, also where the match results and fixtures will be posted. All games will be played within Quebec, with two regional clusters established with one handling each group. IC information about Q&S and the host cities will be available on the post right below that of the OP, to be released at the end of February 11th.

For any OOC comments, please redirect them to the Signup-OOC thread. If you have more direct enquiries, please contact me on discord or TG.

Rosters

FIrst, and arguably the most important, step of your participation on any NS Sports tournament is to post a roster. Not only it provides you a rough overview of team to work off of, but it also helps others to roleplay with you! So, while it's perfectly fine for you not being able to RP, it is recommended that you at least post a roster.

Over the years, I have been asked multiple times by many users on what would constitute as appropriate size of the teams or how many positions can the players hold. At minimum, this should be a list of 7 players including a libero. This also means that you should aim to have at least one Right Side/Opposite, 2 Middle Blockers/Centres, 2 Left/Outside Hitters, a setter and a libero as well.

There is a bit more mix (and debate! too) with the maximum size of the teams - IRL it's 12 players + alternates for Summer Olympics, and 14 players for all senior cups hosted by FIVB (World Cup, World Championships), and Volleyball Nations League 14 players selected from a 25-player pool every week - and we have to consider how long the international competitions can take in indoor volleyball both IRL and ICly.

Thus, my general recommendation would be 12 players for squads with weaker depth/less money (important to remember that weaker depth =/= overall team strength) and either 14 players or 14 players + alternates for teams with stronger depth/more money for the federation to send more players to the competition. In this case, you should also aim to bring at least 2 Right Side/Opposites, 3 Middle Blockers/Centres, 3 Left/Outside Hitters and 2 setters. Beyond that, however, feel free to adjust the numbers as you need to do so.

WELCOME TO QUEBEC AND SHINGORYEO!

Volleyball is traditionally viewed as an indoor sport in Quebec and Shingoryeo, played alongside basketball during the cold, snowy Quebecois winters, which makes it somewhat ironic that the country's hosting it in early-mid August, right when the country's at its hottest. So while you'd generally expect cooler summers than in most other countries, there should be plenty of sunlight outside for people to enjoy and have fun. Quebec and Shingoryeo is at the northwestern end of Anaia, right next to Ko-oren, but under the Anaian-Atlantian Arctic and the murky waters that separate Rushmore and Anaia-AO, and the strong presence of mountains and icy lands for northern half of the land means that the nation has a particularly cold climate.

The Quebecois are ethnically diverse people of Indigenous, Koreanophone and Caucasian origins, whose origin (for first category) and arrivals (for other two) dating back centuries. There once was a time when the Quebecois, whose naval and mercenary strength were at the strongest, used to have a major maritime empire and form relationships with nations of their interest across the Multiverse (nations that form Gatchingerrak Union in particular), and while the Empire no longer exists in technicality, there is a strong, twenty-nation community of the Quebecois Commonwealth that stretch across Anaia, Atlantian Oceania and Rushmore that involve both their allies and former territories. Slowly but substantially itbroduced over the course of mid-late 1700s, country's history of democratic politics, usually represented by the Parliament located in Quebec City and their cooperation with Her Majesty Christine II, continue to this day with strong political interest and action taken by the public.

Quebecois cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change. Influenced by the indigenous fare and the influences of haute cuisine coming from the Korean settlers of old, the Quebecois cuisine is largely based upon rice, other diverse kinds of grains, vegetables, and meats. In this part of Calania, moose and caribou are known to be particularly popular, which have long survived the wave of delicacies that are no longer eaten. They are also known for intensive use of spices, sauces and pastes. Seafood is extremely popular across the country, though their affordability remains up in the air unless you reside on West or East Coast - more inland parts usually consume freshwater fare instead. Quebecois do not have particularly picky taste of alcohol in general, though what alcohols you drink usually depends on your cultural background and socieconomic demographics. Smoking culture is massive here, and while cigarette smoking is very slowly declining over the years, marijuana's prominence in society is not something that's being challenged anytime soon.

Quebecois society tends to lean left-wing, but really there is a mixed bag of all facets due to the country's size, population and linguistic barriers that tend to exist on region-to-region basis, and not to mention social stratification and existence of class barrier that even the modern era Quebec has not been able to get rid of. This gets particularly evident on rural communities (those surrounding and on venues that host First Group Stage matches) where one linguistic community would be a kilometre or two away from another one, or you'd see occasional presence of massive plot owned by a hereditary/life peer. Can be quite striking. Urban areas there isn't as much, though you'd pick up subtleties now and then if you stay here long enough.

Traditionally, Roman Catholicism, Mahayana Buddhism, Anglicanism, and Indigenous religions are considered as four religious pillars of state, and are viewed with particular interest by state and people. All four pillars, as well as other minor religions, incorporate various elements of native shamanism and folk traditions, and do not always follow the rules from Vatican or Canterbury, something that have complicated the authority-to-authority relations over the Interrealm portal. Religious freedom's unquestioned here though, and people tend to be careful being aware of other person's religions but not asking about them.

Volleyball is one of the big four indoor sports in the country, and one that the country has experienced most international success (well, depends - basketball has chance if we go by longevity). As with almost every sport in this country, Montreal Koreana and CSKA Quebec bring The Quebecois Classic, the biggest rivalry in this nation, to QOVO.1 league's men and women's divisions. Fortunately for the league's sake, however, no arena has been burned down by the hooligans yet and the league's parity has been stable enough to ensure that there are usually 4-6 clubs who can contend and win on each division.

Quebecois volleyball fans, even those who are active members of The Bubonic Plague, are known to be very gentlemanlike in their behaviour, and appreciate high-quality volleyball. This behaviour, combined with decades-long effort taken by the RQVF to make the volleyball arenas safe to attend, means that you should be more than fine if you are a foreigner. Alcohol consumption is permitted on all arenas, though rowdy spectator(s) may be thrown out if deemed risk of other spectators or players. Marijuana consumption is permitted on certain lounges.

VENUES

Fourteen venues from five clusters have been selected by the Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation (RQVF) to host the first two group stages of the tournament. Here, eight venues will host the first group stage matches (OOC: I will be adding individual arena and cluster details by the end of this weekend):

SOUTHWEST CLUSTER - Rnd. 1 Group A: C-Rock Centre, Cornwall (Capacity: 9,600) - Nogojiwanong Coliseum, Nogojiwanong (Capacity: 6,500)

MID-CENTRE CLUSTER - Rnd. 1 Group B: Shawinigan Sunrise Arena, Shawinigan (Capacity: 14,500) - University Pavilion, South Bend (Capacity: 14,000)

WEST COAST CLUSTER - Rnd. 1 Group C: The Thunderdome, Prince Eric (Capacity: 9,200) - Parc de l'Armistice, Bongohdong (Capacity: 7,000)

NORTHEAST CLUSTER - Rnd. 1 Group D: Bank of Halifax Saddledome, Goose Bay (Capacity: 13,000) - Imperial Oil Arena, Labrador City (Capacity: 11,750)

Back at the beginning of Volleyball World Expo 9, the Sarzonian national volleyball team was a collection of inexperienced secondary school kids who had never traveled internationally, let alone played against foreign competition.

To say nothing was expected of Sarzonia in a sport that didn't even occupy a niche position among Sarzonian sporting competitions would be to undersell the point. And yet, Alan Ryan and his collection of pimple-faced teenagers managed a run to the semifinals in Cassadaigua before finishing fourth. Sarzonia would opt not to send a team to the next edition when Taeshan announced their intent to host the tournament, leaving Sarzonia to return in the 11th edition. Ryan and company barely squeezed into the knockout rounds as the 16th seeds and faced the tournament's juggernaut, one that expected to brush off the Stars like a drunken fly. That Stars team managed one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history and knocked out the best team in the group stages before falling in the next round.

Now? The Stars are coming off another pewter medalist finish in WLC 13 as they get set to make a controversial return to Anaia and Quebec and Shingoryeo. Some wags opposed the idea of Sarzonia going to Anaian territory for the Volleyball World Expo, but Ryan had blunt words for complainers.

"Get over it," he said. "We're not here for politics. We're here to play volleyball."

They will do so facing expectations for one of the few times in their history. They enter as the seventh ranked team in the multiverse with one thing working in their favour: Cohesiveness.

"We don't have a national league and when school isn't in session, we spend a lot of time together," said outside hitter Frank Abrams. "We all really like each other."

Setter Callie Stern agreed, saying they're like a family.

"We're all siblings here," she said, taking care to use a gender-neutral term with non-binary blocker Charlie Avery in mind. "Charlie's a big part of this team even though they don't start. They can start and they're kind of the conscience of this team."

If there were anyone on the squad who could be the most popular teammate, it would likely be Kitt Bowser, the transgender libero who has become the cut-up of the team.

"She's a regular comedian," Stern said. "They're really funny."

Women's Volleyball in Banija

Volleyball has always been a fairly popular sport among female athletes, one of the few Banijan sports where ratings and attention are dominated by the women's side, as opposed to the men's side. With that, the sport never really gender integrated. But this being a smaller sport, there has been less unity at the professional level.

The collegiate level works like the rest of the country's college sports. It's the professional level where it gets interesting. Instead of one, unified, national league, there are two rival women's professional volleyball leagues in the country- the Banija Elite Volleyball League(BEVL), and the Orange Sky Volleyball Championship(OSVC). The BEVL is concentrated on the west coast, consisting exclusively of teams in the Moravica and Kitara Regions. The OSVC consists of teams from the rest of the country. More information on Banija's domestic volleyball setup can be found here.

At the national team level, the sport really established itself during the XIV Summer Olympiad in Istria. With the volleyball portion of the games taking place in Banija, Banija's women rose up to the challenge, sweeping gold medals in women's volleyball, both in the team indoor version of the sport and on the beach. That turned out, however, to be a miracle run. ON the indoor circuit, they fell to a more familiar position, as their miracle gold medal run was mostly a product of home field advantage, as well as everything coming together at the right time.

Things are going swell on the beach side of things, with two separate pairs of Banijan women winning back-to-back golds at Istria/Orean and the Bunjil Games, respectively. But the Olympic Committee has identified volleyball as a sport where the Banijans are 'severely underperforming'. "We believe that we are capable of much more than what we have achieved internationally in this sport." Said the OCB spokesman. "We, of course, do have a gold medal on home soil, one that can never be taken away. But we can do better consistently. Improving in the Commonwealth Games. Improving at the World Expo. Those are important tournaments, and we are going to endeavor, over both the short and long-term, not only raise the standard of play in this country, but change both how this country, and how the world at large, views Banijan volleyball."

This is once again a women’s team, which reflects in part the weak state of men’s volleyball in Græntfjall. This is perhaps surprising as the “land of the frost giants”, pumping out Big Fucking Græntfjallers in everything from football and basketball to handball and water polo – but then that’s the point, there’s simply too much competition for talent, and few tall men would choose a relatively niche sport when ample opportunities exist in other games. But with the women’s basketball and handball scenes lagging, a stronger talent pool seems to have emerged among the women.

VOLLEYBALL WORLD EXPO 14 - Quebec & Shingoryeo

VOLLEYBALL IS BACK

The popularity of volleyball in our country has grown primarily thanks to our women's national team and winning the Olympic bronze medal.
We will introduce our team a little closer to this year's Expo Volleyball. Although we competed twice in this competition, we did not have much success. However, we already have experience in international competitions, but we also left a good impression at the Olympic Games. These are all references to making the biggest step forward in this competition this season.
We present you our first team, our first six.

Kornelija Vlašić -this twentytwo year old lady is born in touristic paradise called Plava Laguna. When she was in early age, her father brings her in Basketball club. Her father was basketball player . Kornelija grow fast and at age of eight she was one of tallest girls in club. But Kornelija didn't stay in basketball for long. After her's basketball training session, volleyball club have training session in same hall. She stayed to watch valleyball and she never leave this sport. Today she is member of Bistua Nuova club, current champions.
Bistua Nuova finished second in last season of championship but this season they are on top. Korneleija is best Left side hitter in all league, she is 203 cm tall and almost unstopable. But she is great in block as well. Amazingly talented player.
" I love a lot of things in my life but when I have to go on training that is something special to me, felling is... it 's just...I don't know how to say, my blood boiling up. Volleyball is more than a game to me, it 's everything."

Mario Traparić – tallest player in our team, he is 210 cm tall. - 25y. - Right side hitter/Blocker – Rudar Raduč is his club for now. Rumor has it that he could move to Kings Star Catania (KSK) for huge compensation. He could become the most payed volleyball player in the history of our league. Mario is really fast for tall player. Amazing serve, hitter and blocker player.
"I don't know anything about any negotiations. I just want to play volleyball at the highest level and the rest of it...I don't know, will be I suppose."

Ivan Jureković – 205 cm – 24 y. - Middle hitter – Kings Stars Katanija ( Captain)- Ivan is not the team captain for no reason. He is adorned with incredible team sports intelligence. He runs a team on every ball. He is a player that any club can only wish for. Other players appreciate and respect him. He has great organization and encourages every player. He is currently the highest paid player in our league.
He likes to say that he is a philanthropist and a car lover.
"If I weren't a volleyball player I would probably race cars. I don't know what that would look like with my 205cm hahaha"

Vedran Žlender – 189 cm – 26 y. - Setter – a teammate of our captain with whom he won the championship and the cup in the KSK jersey. Žlender came to KSK from Dormatisi Dalatija Bank three seasons ago. After these two clubs played the championship and cup finals, the leaders of Kings Star Catania quickly realized its potential. It didn't take long for the administration to bring him to KSK. It turned out to be a great investment.
Žlender is successful off the field as well. Namely, he attends the University of International Relations and Diplomacy.
"I don't know which direction I'll going to go after I finish my sports career. I'm not thinking about it now. But I like international relations and high international politics."

Nataša Vemenarić – 180 cm - 26 y. – Libero – Despite her great quality, Nataša had a bad season behind her. Her team, which played the final four two seasons ago, dropped out of the strongest competition this year. Nataša is still a member of the ŽOK Melarit Volley club, but her negotiations with the Pionir Podgora club are coming to an end and we believe that we will soon have the news that she has signed for a new team.
" At the beginning of the season, we lost several players due to injuries. Then the captain moved to Evergreen. We remained quite weakened and the league is extremely strong. This season has been the strongest so far. I’m sorry we dropped out of the strongest league but it’s a sport. "

Robert Mamić– 202 cm – 23 y. - Middle blocker – This is a player who got the nickname "crankshaft" with his game and commitment in Dalatia Banka club of Dormatisi. An amazing player with a great perception of the game and the trajectory of the ball. He reads the opponent's attack brilliantly and is always in the right place at the right time. A self-effacing player, he rarely gives interviews and is a heartthrob of women’s hearts. The handsome, black-haired giant is the target of big magazines in the country who are happy to see him on their covers.
"I have more calls from fashion agencies than from volleyball clubs hahaha. Ok, when I think about it a little better, it may not have sounded the best for my sports career. I'll stay in volleyball for now, maybe I combine both. I'm only 23, I have time on my side, I can get everything haha "

OUR VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS IN THE "GROUP OF DEATH"

Our volleyball players were not very lucky during the draw. Srednjaci are placed in perhaps even the most difficult group.
Only in this group are as many as four teams from the top 15 in the world. The top-ranked team hosts Quebec and Shingoryeo in second place in the world volleyball rankings.
Ours will have a very difficult task.
In addition to Quebec and Shingoryeo, the group also includes Sarzonia, the top 10 volleyball nation. The Stars first appeared in the 9th edition of the World Expo. Today they are led by experienced strategist Alan Ryan.
Graentfjall and Natanians and Nosts are the fourteenth and fifteenth volleyball nations in the world. We may be able to surprise someone of them and push ourselves to that fourth position in the group that leads further into the competition.

GROUP A -- CORNWALL & NOGOJIWANONG
MD1 Sarzonia
MD2 Quebec and Shingoryeo
MD3 Natanians and Nosts
MD4 Græntfjall
MD5 Western Sol
MD6 BYE
MD7 Americas and Australia

A lot of quality volleyball is definitely waiting for us. WAS will broadcast almost all the matches of this championship. We wish good luck to our national team. Go Srednjaci !!

PEMECUTAN WOMEN'S NATIONAL VOLLEYBALL TEAM
for
14 VOLLEYBALL WORLD EXPO

Pemecutan is back again to perform at the 14th edition of Volleyball World Expo. It is the 6th appearance of the country in the event. Unfortunately, the country never made it pass group stage. Their most successful campaign was their first appearance where they were almost advancing with only the set difference that failed them.

Just as previous edition, Pemecutan is represent by the all-female team. This is in coincidence that only women's domestic league that is running. Manager, Putu Agus Diwandana is still relying on the previous team citing that this is the best team that they have this time.

Quebec and Shingoryeo Men's and Women's National Volleyball Teams - VWE 14

Volleyball World Expo 13 Champions ~ Three-time Olympic Gold Medalists ~ IVF WorldLeague III Champions

The Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation, in continuation of its practice also shared by Basketball Quebec (BQ) and Quebecois Handball Federation (QHF), is proud to continue its practice of sending mixed teams with expanded rosters to international competitions, even as the QOVO.1 leagues remain gender-separated. In terms of who the team plays, the RQVF maintains a different policy than BQ, and will maintain a straightforward policy:

  • Quebecois men will play against male teams. In case there is no specified team due to lack of roster in past (generally counted as tournaments VWE 9 onwards), or there is a mixed team that mostly consists of male players, the male team will play.
  • Quebecois women will play against female team. If there is a mixed team that mostly consists of female players, the women's team will play.
  • In case of mixed or nongendered gender teams, the RQVF will send a dualsex team.

Quebecois Volleyball In Nutshell

Alongside (ice) hockey and basketball, Volleyball's considered one of the three indoor jewels of the Quebecois winter sports. It is one of few countries in the Multiverse where both men's and women's indoor volleyball have remained highly popular, and the QOVO.1 and QOVO.2 leagues sees fairly even television ratings and attendance figures among both sexes.

Unlike the basketball teams, the volleyball teams maintain separate heights, with the women being slightly taller than average (OOC: compared to RL, that is) and men having roughly average heights, and the RQVF competition policies reflect this. The parity of talent and international success shared between the Quebecois men and women, as well as the fact the two national team programs had played against each other for most part, means that there is less need and even lesser need to double-squad the benches. That said, as the returning world champions, this version of Grim Reapers aims to be no different than most of their top 10 opposition in their ability to ride the benches, and will actively use the substitutions where needed. One may argue that is where their strengths lie - consistent depth - but that may also be a different word for 'lack of a clear best 7'.

As expected from a major volleyball power, the Quebecois have two major rivals - Mytanija and HUElavia on women's side and Bollonich on men's side. The relatively recent revival of international volleyball in sporting multiverse had meant that the major names on sport were only able to consistently get together the previous fifteen years. Still, the success brought by the return of both VWE and the IVF WorldLeague, combined with smashing success of the volleyball tournaments back in 2052 Bunjil Olympics, were more than enough to generate major storylines and rivalries. The Quebecois enjoy a healthy, even-leveled record with the Mytanars, as the Quebecois sweep on VWE and Mytanars the WorldLeague, combined with beautiful full-set matches, bring a particularly interesting dynamic here. The Quebecois have a bit more unevenly-weighted rivalries with Bollonich, against who they enjoy a winning record, and HUElavia, the very opposite, but the outliers to general trends have happened before over past championship matches (Bollonich WorldLeague IV finals and HUElavia last VWE final) and it is expected that all sides stay cautious when facing their rivals.

OOC: For a better background, you may want to see this video or read this. As Huayravóley is basically the same as the RLStates Ecuadorian variant of Volleyball.

Image

Head Coach: Víctor Dávila (42) - Los Borrachos Sport Club & Pub
Assistant Coaches: Wait, what? Huayravóley is amateur, we won't waste money by hiring a dude for only a month.

Background: Welcome to the somewhat picturesque and folkloric world of Huayravóley. For those who ask themselves "why you don't call it volleyball as it's called?" Let me tell you that Huayramarcans are known for being rather unique due to distorting things and making them theirs. A volleyball costs 25% of the monthly minimum wage of your average citizen out there, so why not using cheap footballs to play volleyball, using rotten ropes as nets and playing it barefoot in any place (streets, pastures, alleyways, plazas) and call it Huayravóley? Sports are an important part of life for Huayramarcans, aside from football, Huayravóley is the most played sport in the nation as it doesn't need a lot of equipment to play, nor uniforms, just pick your usual clothes and play!

Inclusiveness is the name of the game, the Huayramarcan society is characterised by throwing down barriers and allowing unknown people to join and play for the sake of having a scape of their daily misfortunes: Rich or poor, tall or small, white or black skinned; it doesn't matter, just grab the fucking ball and play! Huayravóley started because some random Québécois tourist invited people to play in a dusty street in the outskirts of the Metropolitan District, people loved it and bought cheap equipment from football teams in order to create local leagues. Those leagues proliferated across the nation and, basically, every town has one league functioning in a parallel way; but there are some national tournaments that accept free inscription to determine the best team of Huayravóley across the nation.

Teams aren't gender-segregated, are composed by three players and have a higher and wider net than usual volleyball, as it's a 2.80 metres high and 0.6 metre wide net, forcing players to be creative and highly-skilled in terms of technique to be able to stand out from their peers. From sandwich shops, pubs, gangs to groups of friends, Huayravóley has a diverse set of teams competing by the mere sake of fun and money raised in local gambles; it can be considered that Huayramarca has only a professional league in the shape of the National Huayravóley Classic, a tournament that it's open to inscriptions and players are paid to play for by entrances at auditoriums, which tend to be packed during the whole tournament.

The idea of creating a team emerged while Víctor Dávila noticed two Huayramarcan players at the Québécois Volleyball League, he called them and asked 12 random Huayravóley players to create a team and play the Volleyball World Expo. The players have been under "serious" training for a month in order to adapt to the rules of "normal volleyball" and avoid problems during the tournament with rules and stuff.

Chromatik Volleyball Roster
Head Coach: Paul GRANDERSON (46)

Starters:
Setter: #4 Nancy GERMAIN (29), Montreal Koreana (Q&S) - 6 ft 11 in
Outside Hitter: #18 Samuel JUNG (24), LDVC - 6 ft 7 in
Opposite Hitter: #11 Lance GERARD (30), UTVC - 6 ft 8 in
Middle Blocker: #24 Larry LEAR (26), WTVC - 6 ft 10 in
Middle Blocker: #1 KIM Do-Ya (22), UTVC CAPTAIN - 6 ft 9 in
Libero: #17 Nancy NILES (25), Swanguard Athletic (Q&S) - 6 ft 5 in

Bench:
Setter: #31 Marseille VICERO (22), LDVC - 6 ft 8 in
Outside Hitter: #20 Megan SUISHAM (23), WTVC - 6 ft 4 in
Opposite Hitter/Middle Blocker: #22 Allyson GANDORF (25), ZMVC - 6 ft 7 in
Middle Blocker: #29 Kenny SINGLER (27), MHVC - 6 ft 8 in
Libero: #4 Gregory ISSIL-JOBAR (27), CCVC - 6 ft 7 in
Utility: #15 Sinclair HWANG-JONES (26), ZMVC - 6 ft 5 in
With the expansion of the Chromatik Volleyball League to Twelve Teams, this is the best volleyball roster the country has ever seen. Leading the way is Kim Do-Ya, the youthful phenom that's led the way for Urrheddiao Thunder Volleyball Club, leading the league in blocks. The actual Captain of the squad is the Libero, Nayncy Niles, whose artful digs have become almost commonplace; she sets the tone for the squad's tendency of defense first.

On the attack, Nancy Germain is the best Setter on the team, often used for that ball to set up the score. Then, right-handed Samuel Jung from the left and left-handed Lance Gerard from the right take care of business. Jung is likely to hit directly at people while Gerard prefers to aim at spots. It's an interesting squad.

Off the bench, look for the likes of Sinclair Hwang-Jones to enter whenever anyone is in trouble; Allyson Gandorf hits powerfully from the side, while Megan Suisham has finesse. If needed, Gregory Issil-Jobar can fill in for Niles.

The team's goal is simple - just make it to knockout rounds. But.. It's going to be a challenge.

Gatchingerrak Union Men's and Women's National Volleyball Teams - VWE 14

The Joint Federation of the Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori Nations (JFGURN), in continuation of its practice also shared by their rival and fellow commonwealth federation in the Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation (RQVF), is happy to send the mixed teams with expanded rosters to international competitions, even as the Gatchingerrak Superliga leagues remain gender-separated. To maintain consistency across all nations (Banija being an exception, due to their historical precedence on sending only the women's national team), the JFGURN maintains and will maintain a straightforward policy no different than that of the RQVF:

  • Union men will play against male teams. In case there is no specified team due to lack of roster in past (generally counted as tournaments VWE 9 onwards), or there is a mixed team that mostly consists of male players, the male team will play.
  • Union women will play against female team. If there is a mixed team that mostly consists of female players, the women's team will play.
  • In case of mixed or nongendered gender teams, the JFGURN will send a dualsex team.
Note: In the case of the final matchday showdown between Quebec and GGU national teams, the men's national teams will face each other. This policy is mostly due to the fact that there have been way less men's volleyball teams out in the NSSverse compared to women or mixed teams.

IC Information

Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori nations, shortened as the Gatchingerrak Union, is a cultural and political alliance of four countries of the Quebecois Commonwealth located in mid-southern Rushmore (Norrskie Zasousti, Norrehavn, Gatchinovo and Novopetrograd, with an incoming membership by the Ilyrian Isles). The three kingdoms and the citystate, while independent nations of own, do have the Gatchingerrak Union as a way to establish their common zone, where their main goals are to advance co-operation in military, cultural, economic and energy matters. It shares land border with Vaugania and Norrhem to the west, while bits of the east touch Phoenigetzusta. Combined population of the union are estimated to be around 83 million.

While its trio of nations have always fought with one another for centuries, Gatchingerrak Union is a culturally diverse nation with growing importance outside to that of the Quebecois Commonwealth. Its population is ethnically diverse, with the eastern, Novopetrogradian half of the realms primarily Slavic, while the Western half is divided to primarily Nordic Norrehavn on north and slavic Norrskie Zasousti on the south. Somewhere in middle of the lake, which faces all of the three nations, stands the island that is nowadays known as the citystate of Gatchinovo, the ancient place known for its significance on trades and diplomacy among the Rushmori realms of the Quebecois Commonwealth. It is where the Accord between the 4 states were signed in year 2030 (around the time of WC78), to promise co-prosperity among the rivalling states whose cooperation is needed more than ever. Its economy is a mix of natural resources and heavy manufacturing for it.

A no stranger to international sport, Gatchingerrak Union does have a past history of international football and hockey, where its western realms were represented as Norrehavn. It has hosted a Copa Rushmori and a World Cup of Hockey, and both sports are extremely popular. Unfortunately, the long years of absence from the international sporting circuit does mean that it is expected to be a long way back to relevance for the seven-stars.

New Faces, Same Expectations

HUElavia enters the VWE as one of the favorites with new and young players looking to go for another deep run.

Four years have passed and HUElavia return to one of their best and favorite tournaments in the multiverse: The Volleyball World Expo. For this 14th edition of the competition, HUElavia returns to the country where they earned their first title eight years ago and the nation of one of their biggest sporting rivals, as well as one of their closest allies in Quebec and Shingoryeo.

Las Amarillas/As Amarelas travel to the nation now located in Anaia wanting to go for another deep run, after falling short in the Final to none other than Quebec and Shingoryeo in VWE 13. Some players that started four years ago have retired, giving a chance to the backups to move up as starters, as well as new players from various universities across HUElavia being selected to represent the team. Today, Obe is the captain of the team, where she look to lead these ladies to possibly HUElavia's 2nd title in the sport.

HUElavia (1) was put in Group D with the likes of Cassadaigua (5), Chromatika (11), Lisander (17), Gatchingerrak Union (25), StrayaRoos Barrier Islands (UR), and Busoga Islands (UR). Notably, the matches against Cassadaigua and Chromatika should be an exciting pair of matches, while the match against Lisander will be a rekindling of an old sporting rivalry that has not been seen in almost three decades. HUElavia's opening two matches will be against StrayaRoos Barrier Islands and Gatchingerrak Union for the first two matchdays. These games will be played between the arenas of Bank of Halifax Saddledome in Goose Bay (13,000) and Imperial Oil Arena in Labrador City (11,750). HUElavians will be flocking to the arenas in the thousands to cheer on the team, where they look forward to exploring the two cities and enjoy their time in the country once again.

Here's to a promising tournament and the run!

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

MYTANIJA SQUAD FOR VOLLEYBALL WORLD EXPO 14

Mytanija’s meteoric rise in volleyball has stalled a little bit at VWE level, though their impressive showings in the IVF World League and an Olympic gold do a fair bit to ease the pain of being unable to win a second VWE title. It’s a long time since the glory of VWE 11 and whilst a bronze at VWE 12 showed that the team were still at a good level they were unable to continue fighting for a medal position at VWE 13 after being dispatched from the competition by Mytanija’s oldest rivals on the volleyball court: Quebec and Shingoryeo. The Quebecois team striking out into a 2-0 lead before Mytanija fought back to level the match at 2-2. The final set went all the way to 14-14 before Quebec managed to finish the job and secure the victory at 16-14. They would go on to lift the trophy in four sets against HUElavia, though many – particularly those on Mytanar soil – felt the true final had come all the way back at the quarter final stage.

It was a result which led to legendary coach Radina Ristic calling time on her national team coaching tenure. She would return to manage Litala ’93 for another year at MOF Top League level, preferring to try and go back-to-back in the IVF Volleyball Champions League, something she eventually achieved with a three-set victory over Quebec’s Montreal Koreana. An unprecedented three-in-a-row might well be her final goal, she will hand the reins over to Milka Marovic after next season. Dinamo’s Peruna Zivic will be taking over as Mytanija coach, the 43 year old incredibly breaking the ‘big three’ stranglehold over the MOF Top League with an exceptional campaign on the way to the 30/31 title. Her side lost only 8 games on the way to the championship and Zivic’s management is regarded as a key factor, the coach has enormous cache among players and successfully persuaded phenom Tea Knapic-Hren to join her from Akademija once her eligibility for the de facto national academy side had run out. Monika Cabraja is expected to follow her too. Zivic didn’t have a team of stars to win the domestic title and the MOF are understood to love her team-orientated approach, hoping it will help to bring Mytanija a second VWE trophy.

A number of Zivic’s young core at Dinamo will be joining the national team for this edition of the VWE, but perhaps most interesting are the players who are missing from the squad for this tournament. Experienced libero Oana Asenova has not been selected, as does setter Safija Bojic and middle blocker Ljubena Trpkoska. The turnover is only three players – incidentally the same number as between VWE 12 and 13 – but these are some seriously big name players who Zivic has decided not to select. Asenova in particular is a contentious one given that she has been widely regarded as one of the best liberos around in recent years.

Marija Georgijevic comes into the squad, the Dinamo Esca libero is a player who Zivic is exceedingly familiar with and a real defensive expert despite her lack of size and reach. Natasa Radic remains her back-up after another title challenge domestically and successful defence of the IVF Volleyball Champions League internationally. Another Dinamo Esca star is expected to be the first choice setter in Anica Simic, she’s backed-up by Nada Rogic and Tamara Duleva. Both were members of the VWE 13 squad and have experience aplenty at international level.

There’s very little change in the other three positions in the squad with Zivic retaining the same outside hitters and opposites that Radina Ristic selected. Mira Gushtanova – arguably the greatest modern day scorer in the game – is the headline act in a star-studded group of wing spikers, Tea Knapic-Hren expected to move up into the second choice spot with Majda Omeragic dropping down the depth chart. The fact Omeragic is that far down demonstrates the strength in depth of the Mytanar team at the moment. Alenka Kokot, Zuzana Brajdic and Rafaela Kostenceva are an extremely experienced group of opposites and should provide a lot of defensive nous against some of the best wing spikers.

Middle blocker is a little more interesting even if the captain Amalija Kolar, Sara Gemac and Mirjana Smolcic all return. There is also a place for Dinamo’s Zeljana Kuzmanovic, the 22 year old is the joint-youngest member of the squad and the youngest newcomer. She is a product of the Dinamo youth system and was a part of their title-winning side (unlike Knapic-Hren, who was signed from Akademija), Peruna Zivic has worked with her extensively and is understood to see her as the direct replacement for Amalija Kolar when the time comes for the OK Rauchnya icon to call time on her volleyball career – something which cannot be too far away at the age of 32. Good succession planning should hopefully leave Mytanar volleyball in good health.

There will be a lot of rotation in this team and whilst the players listed first at each position (and first two MBs) will generally be those who play the most minutes Zivic will give everyone plenty of playing time, domestically the sport is viewed very much as a team game and players are rotated regularly and this will continue with the national team. Volleyball is the number one sport among Mytanar women and is extremely well supported, domestic games draw large crowds and receive the same treatment as football games with regard to the presence of ultras and the sort of atmosphere they create within the stadium. It is also pretty lucrative, with the best players receiving salaries which are on a par with the sort of money a good Mytanar Top League footballer would be paid. Indeed, the best players even draw comparable transfer fees to some footballers - Mira Gushtanova was signed by Litala ’93 from Avnalia Odbojka for a domestic record fee of MC 1.25 million/NSD 420,000 - further demonstrating the importance of the sport within Mytanija.

Drama On Eve of Volleyball World Expo,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

Most Cassadagans will have their TV's set to the big World Cup 90 game tonight between the Fillies and Baker Park, but if you don't want to get caught up in all of the pre-game hoopla, you can catch the team's opening game in the Volleyball World Expo. Among the players you can root for is Maddie Gebhardt, the 24-year old who made her first appearance on the team in the last VWE, and is seen as one of the leaders of this team. That would be this Maddie Gebhardt, who made the following social media comments nine years ago on Spacebook. These comments were not known until someone, who would have had to have been on Maddie's friend list (because Maddie has a private profile), made them public this evening:

Maddie: "You know what I can't stand. Ugly guys. So f**king hideous. Like, what the hell?"
(a few LOL responses)
Friend 1: "If it weren't for ugly guys, hot guys would never be appreciated."
Maddie: "Yeah, but still. Is it that hard for these losers to go to the gym?"
Friend 2: "Maddie you shouldnt be saying this"
Friend 1: "She can speak her mind. She has a point ya know"
Friend 2: "Ya but you know its kind mean"
Maddie's Mom: "Maddie, delete this now!"

(A week later)

Maddie: "You know what I also can't stand?"
Friend 2: "Maddie, don't."
Friend 1: "What?"
Maddie: "Gay guys. What is wrong with them?"
Friend 2: "Maddie that's terrible!"
Friend 3: "Now that was rude. OMG"
Maddie's Mom: "Maddie, delete this now! And the other one you never did!"

Apparently, Maddie never did listen to her mother and delete the comments. Many are calling for her to be immediately suspended from the team and sent home. Others are saying it was nine years ago, and that she was only fifteen.

In response, Gebhardt did post today that, "I want to apologize, sincerely, for anyone who was hurt by the comments I made nine years ago as a young and immature teenager. I have learned so much in those nine years and can't believe that I would have posted such a thing in the past. I am so sorry. That is not who I am now."

Some have called her response damage control, and for now Gebhardt will be playing against Gatchingerrak Union and will probably play against Lisander, too as the team wants to investigate the validity of the comments, first. We will keep an eye on this developing story.
