Handball World Cup (HWC25) [rosters/RPs/scores]

Postby Graintfjall » Sun Feb 06, 2022 7:39 am

The basics

If you are completely new to NS Sports, we encourage you to read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying.

If you are new to handball, check out the WikiPedia article; you might also want to look at how things went in the last World Cup.

Rosters

It is a common courtesy to your opponents to list a roster, even if you do not plan on roleplaying the tournament. At minimum this should be a list of 7 players including a goalkeeper; the recommended squad size is 16 players including 2 goalkeepers. Otherwise you can include any other information you think interesting or relevant, from player descriptions to coaching staff, uniforms to playing style.

Handball does not use style modifiers (you can list them if you want to give a sense of how your team plays, but they will have no mechanical impact on the scores) and all games will be played at neutral venues so you do not need to list home stadium information (though you are free to do so).

Please include some form of RP permissions, indicating your preferences for how your opponents roleplay:
Code: Select all
If my opponent RPs first, they may:
Choose my scorers Y/N
RP injuries to my players Y/N
RP yellow cards / 2-minute suspensions / red cards to my players (bold all that apply)
Godmode scoring / injury / other events (bold all that apply)

Disciplines in handball are yellow cards (basic warnings); 2-minute suspensions (for more serious offenses); and red cards (full ejections).

Godmoding is considered to be unusual events that might rarely or never happen in the course of a game. A player scoring a goal with their weak hand is not godmoding; a player scoring a goal by bouncing the ball off a passing pigeon is. Judgment calls on what constitutes godmoding are best resolved between players.

Please read the RP permissions of teams you play against. If you feel someone has not followed your RP permissions, please try to resolve the issue between the two of you. Repeated violation of others’ RP permissions may result in a loss of RP bonus or further penalty. In the event of any irresolvable dispute, the host’s decision will be final.

Format

The 25th Handball World Cup is a joint hosting effort between Græntfjall and member nations of the Græntfjaller Commonwealth. As such, the first group stage will take place outside the White Winter Queendom, in nations found across the various regions. Teams were drawn into seeded pots and assigned to groups based on that seeding. An effort was made to pair nations to their own native regions in order to reduce travel costs, but seeding took priority meaning that in some pots there were more than one from a particular region or no representatives at all; in such cases, teams were randomly drawn.

Group Stage Information

Atlantian Oceania group

This group’s games will take place in Jabal Akhdar City, Jabal Akhdar, at the Al Qunfudayea Iconic Sports Arena (cap. 20,000). A new multi-sports arena, the Al Qundfudayea ISA has been built in the Wadiqrah, a new planned suburb of Jabal Akhdar City designed to attract tourism and investment. Built on a promontory extending into the bay, with a new subway system, and featuring five-star accommodation, this promises to be one of the highest quality venues for any Handball World Cup! Just don’t ask about the human rights record kthx.

Rushmore group

This group’s games will take place in Gosjek, Zelena Planina, at the DBR Arena (cap. 10,500). Gosjek is not the capital city of Zelena Planina; rather, it is the city closest to the geographic center of a nation historically riven between North, South, East and West. In the wake of the civil war as the fragmentary republic seeks to rebuild a fragile peace, it is hoped that hosting some international sports (in an admittedly rather stark, communist-era brutalist arena) will provide for a sense of national harmony, as well as attracting some tourist bucks.

Esportiva group

This group’s games will take place in Yamera, Ha’Yarok, at the Friendship Arena (cap. 11,000). Ha’Yarok is a Zionist Republic in Esportiva, with a majority Jewish population. Handball is a popular sport and the neutral games should be well attended. Yamera is the capital city, and the Friendship Arena located in the Tikvuda neighborhood, a wealthy, middle-class, secular district of the city. The improving security situation – it has been months since the last suicide bombing and rocket bombardment from terrorist camps has been firmly stamped out – and increasing affluence of one of the fastest growing economies in the region should make this a pleasant trip.

Melayu Archipelago group

This group’s games will take place in Tayariñas, Berdeng Bundok, at the Air Bundoko Super Arena (cap. 12,000). Mainly used for basketball, the Super Arena is small but modern and well appointed. Handball in the Bundoko islands is mainly associated with the Schutzenphalian ex-pat community, but it has a growing popularity among the native population, especially beach handball variant. Berdeng Bundok recently completed its first successful international hosting venture, the Melayu Archipelago Cup (of soccer) and is becoming a thriving center for eco-tourism. And the odd Islamist rebel militia.

Anaia group

This group’s games will take place in Port-à-Princesse, Mont Vert, at the Olympic Stadium (cap. 5,000). Note that by being drawn in this group, teams relinquish all rights to sue the Olympic Stadium under trade descriptions and false advertising laws. The small, decrepit stadium has, admittedly, seen better days, and probably has fairly modest chances of hosting an Olympics within the next… millennium. That said, Mont Vert itself is a beautiful sunny island archipelago set amid glittering blue waters, and with an extremely favorable rate of currency exchange. A booming tourist destination, teams may want to spend more time on the beach than in the training facilities, mainly because the training facilities don’t exist yet.

Sonnel group

This group’s game will take place in Ore Processing Unit #7, Seven Green Mountains, in Holodeck Seven (cap. unlimited). Teams travelling to Sonnel may assemble at the GANAX Cosmodrome for a chartered spaceflight, or make their own travel arrangements. Upon arrival on the planet, they will proceed to the Græntfjaller orbital mining colony, where a holographic stadium has been constructed in one of the holodecks used by miners in their downtime. Simulating a crowd of thousands and featuring enhanced safety protocols, the arena is literally out of this world!

Independents group

This group’s games will take place in Bà Ðinh, Núi Xanh, at the Hung Pha Gymnasium (cap. 5,600), part of the National Stadium Complex. Núi Xanh is a lush green country bravely holding out against the increasing threat of communist takeover by rebels from the north; a key member of the Græntfjaller Commonwealth, awarding it some games is seen as a boost to the local economy and a vote of confidence in the government. The stadium itself is small, a multi-sport venue used for boxing, gymnastics and basketball.

Finals & Consolation Stage Information

Græntfjall lies on the northern side of Pavola, in Rushmore; despite lying on the temperate meridian, the combination of the fierce winds coming off the Komodo Channel and the tall Græntfjaller Alps, forming a natural protective border, have created a localized climate of extreme cold even in summer. It is currently autumn (fall) in Græntfjall. Græntfjaller autumns tend to be cold, with light snow in the air, some settling on the ground. Handball is a relatively popular sport that has seen competition from the rapid rise of basketball. Attendance at games should be good, however, as hosting a Handball World Cup is a long cherished dream.

Græntfjallers are hardy Nords, descended (in their mythic lore) from Viking age sackers and salvagers. The country has relatively recently emerged from decades of communist oppression, but has entered the 21st century with a surging economy, rising social freedoms, and new, if slightly complex, democratic politics. The royal family was reinstalled and Queen Júlíana sits on the throne, reigning in a mostly ceremonial role, while real power is located in the Thing, the national parliament where Prime Minister Kaija Michaelsdóttir of the Progressive Liberals leads a new coalition government with the Liberal-Conservative Alliance.

Græntfjall is famous for continuing whaling long after most other countries had abandoned the barbaric practice, but in reality whale meat is a rare commodity in modern Græntfjall and tourists are far more likely to encounter imitation products like lab-grown “Incomprehensible Whaleburger” or purely synthetic “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Blubber!”. Otherwise, the diet tends towards plain, hearty fare. Strong spices and fresh fruits are available, but can be expensive as they are almost wholly dependent on imports. Græntfjallers have a strong tradition of beer drinking; for hard liquors, various clear grain alcohols are the general preference. Smoking is permitted but not widely practised; marijuana is legal.

Græntfjaller society can be quite conservative, especially outside of the major cities. Generally speaking, the further west one travels, the more sympathies to life under the old communist regime you will find expressed; to the east, more virulent anti-communism prevails. The state religion is Roman Catholicism. The vast majority of Græntfjallers are Catholic, though folk traditions incorporating Norse mythology are also common. Homosexuality is legal and homophobic hate crimes both strictly policed and thankfully rare. Rigid gender norms prevail in some strata of society (especially in the south) and are no more obvious than in the country’s naming traditions, which are strictly patronymic: -son surnames for men, -dóttir for women, -bur for gender-neutral persons.

Græntfjallers can be perceived as a bit mercenary. The country has a long history of merchant trading (and an intermittent history of ruthless piracy) and you will generally find that the smiles of your hosts extend only as far as the krónor in your pocket. Color-based racism is sadly not unknown, anti-Islamic sentiment is strong, and there is a bristling tide of anti-immigrant agitation in some working class districts of the major cities, as well as agitation over a million refugees who have recently arrived in the southeast. Freedom of expression is enshrined in the constitution but in practice there are some restrictions, two of the most notable being a ban on the public display of swastikas, hammers-and-sickles, and other such extremist political imagery; and a prohibition on face coverings widely interpreted as a ‘burqa ban’.

Venues

Bear Group

Kyrkdorf is a city at the foothills of the Græntfjaller Alps, which dominate the southern half of the country. Teams will play at the small, but recently refurbished Kyrkdorf MSK Arena.

Eagle Group

Aigsvinger lies a few miles north of Kyrkdorf, and spans the fork in the Odinsfluss river. Given the strong regional divisions in Græntfjall between east and west, its position acusp that divide has always marked it as something of an outlier. It hosts a large folk music festival each year. Games will be played at the Aigsvinger MSK MultiSport Park.

Elk Group

Waltenberg is Græntfjall’s premier university city, home of the famous, if unimaginatively named, University of Waltenberg. Politically it was the center of intellectual resistance to the Communist regime and many of its ancient buildings bear the scars of the bitter overthrow of the regime. UW has a collegiate system; the College of the House of God will host the group stage games at their Big Cup Sports Park.

Wolf Group

Griesberg is another university city. Unlike Waltenberg, it was staunchly pro-regime during the Communist years; ironically, this means its pre-regime architecture is far better preserved, having not been subject to brutal military suppression. The College of Lovers’ Athletic Arena hosts games; unlike most of the other venues in the country, title banners from the Communist era are still proudly adorned there.

Bull Group

Gunzlach is a suburb of Háttmark, the capital, located to the north. An industrial suburb and home of the Gunzlach Arsenal, its Grand National Arena is a multi-sport facility that has been surpassed by newer developments, but still has the capacity to host internationals.

Owl Group

Hagejoki is another Háttmark suburb, this one located north of the river. It lies on the coast at the far eastern edge of the city limits. Home of the main housing blocks of the University of Háttmark, it has a large student population. It hasn’t undergone the urban renovation of nearby Steinaux – frankly, it’s something of a dump – but it has a lively nightlife. Hagejoki Play Park is the largest arena to be hosting group stage games.

Spider Group

Hofvinger is Græntfjall’s northern exclave. Control of this port city has fluctuated over the years and is home to a large naval base. It’s always been slightly ‘different’, with its hardy folk (the weather here is even bitterer than in the mainland) regarding themselves as superior to the soft southern mainlanders. North Wolf Bay Park is a relatively new purpose built arena; it’s housed in what used to be a nuclear submarine base.

Squad of the
Kriegiersien Top Handball League

The Kriegiersien women are the Gold medal winners of the XVth Olympics in Electrum, winning gold for the second time. For the 24th Handball World Cup in Sylestone and Quebec & Shingoryeo the same womens team was send, but missed the round of 8.
Only after that, the first professionell Kriegiersien Handball league was created and a selection of the best players from these league send to the World Cup to finally win something there too. Most players are still from the Olympics women squad.
The first step is to win the independent group of the rest of the world nations.

For a nation where nudity is mandatory, clothes are always a nice surprise. Kriegiersien comes as always in their black Olympic rags.. jerseys.

MASTER BEARS IN REALLY TOUGH GROUP

Our Handball national team is in group B. Same group with World Champions and Olympics gold medalists Bollonich. Handball is most popular team sport in Srednjaci. Women's Master league is number one sport league in Srednjaci. Even so, in last few years men's basketball is realy on the way on popularity.
But still, our national team didn't made impact on international stage. WHC 23 Srrednjaci are stoped in round of 16. On last WHC 24, during the political situation in country, our profesional hanball committee didn't sent any profesional player, only amaters.
But now, we are back and ready for beginning of the competition.

Gatchingerrak Union Handball Team
Trigramme: GGU
Denonym: Gatchin/Unionian
Nickname: Seven Stars

Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori nations, shortened as the Gatchingerrak Union, is a cultural and political alliance of four countries of the Quebecois Commonwealth located in mid-southern Rushmore (Norrskie Zasousti, Norrehavn, Gatchinovo and Novopetrograd). The three kingdoms and the citystate, while independent nations of own, do have the Gatchingerrak Union as a way to establish their common zone, where their main goals are to advance co-operation in military, cultural, economic and energy matters. It shares land border with Vaugania and Norrhem to the west, while bits of the east touch Phoenigetzusta. Combined population of the union are estimated to be around 81 million.

While its trio of nations have always fought with one another for centuries, Gatchingerrak Union is a culturally diverse nation with growing importance outside to that of the Quebecois Commonwealth. Its population is ethnically diverse, with the eastern, Novopetrogradian half of the realms primarily Slavic, while the Western half is divided to primarily Nordic Norrehavn on north and slavic Norrskie Zasousti on the south. Somewhere in middle of the lake, which faces all of the three nations, stands the island that is nowadays known as the citystate of Gatchinovo, the ancient place known for its significance on trades and diplomacy among the Rushmori realms of the Quebecois Commonwealth. It is where the Accord between the 4 states were signed in year 2030 (around the time of WC78), to promise co-prosperity among the rivalling states whose cooperation is needed more than ever. Its economy is a mix of natural resources and heavy manufacturing for it.

THE TEAM

Head Coach: Samuil Becker, 38
Assistant Coaches: Gennadiy Petitpa, 44
Marina Nesterenko, 42

The Gatchingerrak Superliga is a mixed-gender league, with men and women and genderfluid peoples playing in the same league. This reflects in the national team selection, and fluidity with strategies will be sought out to reflect the mix. As with their Quebecois counterparts, the Gatchingerrak Handball (GatHan) will be sending a preliminary entry that consists of two 14-team lists: Primary team and the Alternates. The primary team will be where the vast majority of the players (at least 9 of the entry before every match) will take part, while the alternates will exist to provide two purposes: 1) to provide full-game drills and match situations during practices, and 2) to provide healthy competition within the team. With the recommended squad size being 16 players (14 field players+2 goalkeepers), it is safe to assume that around 4-6 players on the alternates will also see playing time each match.

This Gatchingerrak Union team returns most players from the third-place team last season with the exception of Nicklas Ek-Hanlund, Joakim Søndergaard and Gennadiy Petitpa, and they were even able to retain the services of speedy left wing Milena Mamic, who will play for one last time as the veteran leader of this team. Among the three retirees, Gennadiy Petitpa returns to the team as the assistant coach under Samuil Becker. Under other times, he would have preferred a younger coach, but the sudden nature of his promotion following his predecessor Ben Bengtsson obtaining the job as Quebecois men's team head coach had meant that he chose to appoint Petitpa, a former legend he has not always been in good terms with, as his primary assistant coach. Fortunately for him, the team still has plenty of veterans who can help Becker adjust to the position as well, with Thorsgaard, Mamic, Grankina and Lomonosov all willing to help mentoring the young crop of players coming up.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

This is the tenth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in an international handball tournament. Handball is quite an obscure sport in the Democratic Republic, with no professional league established, and the handball department in the Commission on Sports and Games started out as just two men working out of a plastic table, but now their office has expanded to include three more coworkers and a bigger table. Even though the national handball team has suffered a downturn in form as of late, the rising interest was still enough to finally establish a handball league in the country, more of which will be discussed further down the line. But as always, the national team's objective remains the same as it has always been: win the bloody thing.

Bollonischian Roster for the 24th Handball World Cup

Handball in Bollonich
Handball has a rich history and heritage and an intricate relationship with Bollonischian culture at large. Despite our national teams not having a large history of partaking in international competitions, handball has been more than an important sport for the people for centuries. Known to be coastal people coconuts have always been found in the abundance. An ancient form of the game was played in Bollonich using these coconuts known as ibhola yengalo, in the native language translating to arm ball. The rules and methods of playing the sport has evolved throughout the ages however the place it holds in the hearts of thousands of Bollonischians hasn’t changed.
The stature Handball held in the pyramid of sports was a fairly low one with players usually being amateurs or semi-professionals however with the setting up of the Bollonischian Handball Federation and the BHL this has completely changed how handball was played. Youth players get chances and huge contracts at franchises and their youth teams with players also heading off to foreign leagues. This saw even more rapid change with us hosting the 23rd Handball World Cup. The 23rd Handball World Cup was not just a tournament hosted by us, it was also the tournament where our players debuted in the biggest handball competition. The Handball World Cup had been our introduction to the international foray of handball and we had done splendidly making a fabulous run to the quarterfinals of the competition before losing out to eventual champions Sarzonia.
This however was not our beautiful well known story of glory, or the moment when our players rose from the ground to the pedestal of among the best teams in the world. This moment came for our nation in the 15th Olympics held in Electrum. The Women’s team had been plowing on like the men but they suffered a narrow but no less harrowing defeat to Tikariot’s women in the quarterfinals. This was a painful reminder to our HWC quarterfinal exit back at home. The men however had made their way to the semifinals and didn’t look back for even a moment in the entirety of the tournament crushing all opposition and taking the gold medal from Bunjil following a great showing of strength as they won all of the matches they played in the tournament. Arriving to play in the 24th Handball World Cup, the team arrived with ta weight on their shoulders. A weight to deliver as they carry the expectations of thousands of fans. The team didn’t fail to deliver on these expectations however as they put in their best in all the matches and despite suffering the sole loss in the first group stage we had made it through as the group winners. Given the slightly unorthodox format in the opinion of the Federation, this meant the Bollonischian side would now also partake in a second group stage for the eight quarterfinal berths. The team in this stage too showed no refrain as they won all their games except the one against Lisander which was a hard defeat for the side. The team however was now where they needed to be, from this point on any previous results didn’t matter as we only needed to win three more games to get the much desired and deserved Handball World Cup trophy. Facing off against Græntfjall, this was a game between two Rushmori heavyweights in handball looking to make it through. The Bollonischians however managed to completely bamboozle the Græntfjaller side snatching a massive victory and moving onto face another Rushmori side, Gatchingerrak Union in the semifinals another game which we comfortably won. The stage had been set, for a massive showdown between two Handball giants, Sylestone and ourselves. This was going to be an extremely difficult challenge for the team, but we were not lacking in confidence whatsoever and in similar fashion to our Olympic gold medal we won our second piece of silverware in the world of handball winning the highest accolade possible making us the champions of the world. Days of celebration later things died down but they never got back to normal and as we come into the Græntfjaller Commonwealth, we want to retain our crown. That however will not be an easy task. Owing to the greatly successful campaign we had last time, the management decided to go with the same set of players for this World Cup looking to reignite that same spark.

Style of Play
Similarly to most of Bollonich’s other teams sports, the handball side focuses on its passing game looking to get out of situations with quick speed or finesse instead of going hands on physical. The players however are not afraid to have physical encounters if they are provoked. The right and left backs are a crucial piece in the team’s entire play often orchestrating some of the best chances as the centre back is always the solid player, the player to protect and rescue us from terrifying situations.
The pole or centre is player is almost always that one man who is infant of the goal and the main threat to put goals in opposition nets. The wings are mainly there to assist the centre player in doping his or her job.
The handball side prefers quick, attacking and beautiful play to the often useful but dull defensive techniques utilised by many sides.

SYLESTONE NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

THE 25TH HANDBALL WORLD CUP

Overview

It has taken only two editions of the Handball World Cup for Sylestone’s star-studded team to make a final and following that, achieve the rank of the second in the multiverse. Now, with the creation of the Sylestone Handball Intranational Tournament (SHIT), the national team’s talent scouring is deeper and more prolific than ever, with a wide database of everyone capable of making the domestic league. This is a necessary requirement, for as good as the national team are at this point in time, they are aging.

During the heartbreak following the Hawthorns’ 30-23 shellacking to Rushmori powerhouse Bollonich, erstwhile winger Liam Thompson announced his retirement from the international scene, while skipper Isla McCartney also indicated that she had one more World Cup left in her before she handed the captaincy over and solely focussed on her skills in the twilight of her career. Even more recently, 36-year-old goalkeeper Bianca Gotch indicated that this World Cup would be the last of her international career. Many other integral players - including the likes of Isabella Bailey, Amber James and Ben Ackman, are not quite at their best anymore. It is fortunate that the majority of the reserves in this squad are young and talented.

The 24th Handball World Cup, of which Sylestone cohosted with Anaians Quebec & Shingoryeo, was arguably the nation’s best chance to take out the title. They came close, too, but Bollonich were simply too good, ending an undefeated streak of twelve games leading right back to that brilliant overtime match against Græntfjall in the quarterfinals of the 23rd Handball World Cup. Those two games, though, are the only two the Hawthorns have ever lost, with a whopping twenty wins to go alongside them. While they still appear to be a favourite this year, an aging squad means that the likes of Sarzonia, Bollonich and hosts Græntfjall, just to name a few, may certainly be able to defeat the Hawthorns. But you never know. Age generally means experience, and experience can do weird things to a side.

Quebec and Shingoryeo Men's and Women's National Handball Teams - HWC 25

The Quebecois Handball Federation (QHF), in continuation of its practice also shared by Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation (RQVF), Basketball Quebec (BQ) and Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA), is proud to continue its practice of sending mixed teams with expanded rosters to international competitions. In regards to their opponents' preferences to play the men, women or mixed teams, will remain flexible in advanced consultation with their opponents (OOC: go ahead and ask me).

HANDBALL IN QUEBEC AND SHINGORYEO

Handball is the number one summer indoor sport in Quebec and Shingoryeo, a spot it comfortably holds with packed stands. While the sport itself doesn't hold the 30,000+ crowd the gridiron or baseball matches normally get, the relative accessibility of handball more than cover such deficiency. Quebec and Shingoryeo does have a 3-tier, dualsex pyramid for handball, with the 14-team Ligue-Boreale at the very top of the pyramid.

Unfortunately, the international results for the Quebecois national teams have yet to really reflect their popularity. Following the double gold at Nassau Bay-Centralis, the three-decade long (and ongoing) dispute between Quebecois Handball Federation, the Players Association, and the Ligue-Boreale, had meant that the Quebecois national teams rarely entered over last three decades, if ever, with a full squad, with many refusing to participate internationally over last thirty years. This, supported by underwhelming performance on last two Handball World Cups and the XV Summer Olympics, means that there is a long road ahead for the Quebecois national team.

STYLISTICS

Stylistically, Team Quebec distances itself from the usual style of brutal physicality found in other sports. Both men and women are finesse and speed-driven, preferring to overlap and pass a lot before finding lots of opportunities, which makes sense given their relatively shorter height. The team's ability to come up with endless combinations, thanks to its strengths on the most important position in centre back, is what's going to make this team hard to play against. They will try to stay as flexible as possible on positionality between the backs, where they do enjoy a relatively better depth than on the wings, and on right side of the court. That is what they will use in order to overcome deficiencies on height and also on wing play.

Unfortunately, they are somewhat weaker on wingers though they rely a lot on wing play, and the relative imbalance between the left and the right side of the attack is what the Quebecois need to fix as well. The goalkeepers, for most part, are pretty good, occasional troubles on the empty net aside. Oh, and whether they succeed or fail on a match-to-match basis will really come down to how many turnovers they can produce- those they will probably have to work bit more off.

Thus, expect them to try scoring from the sides than the centre, though if they do so up the middle, they will be going for 9m shot instead of a 3m shot or even 7m shot. Empty goal situations are always good for them as well. They will convert turnovers too, as long as they can get enough of them...

The Team

Coaching Staff

Coach Position Age Team
Ben Bengtsson Head Coach-M 47 Quebecois Handball Federation (QHF)
Varinder Bhullar Head Coach-F 51 HC CSKA Quebec
Park Gyeong-Shin Assistant Coach-M 59 Montreal Koreana
Catherine Dion-Heo Assistant Coach-F 45 Corner Brook Islanders
Uhm Soo-Yong Team Manager-Coach 40 Planthoppers HC
Choo Yeong-Heon Analyst 36 Universite St. Croix
Bok Jong-Hye Team Doctor 39 PLI Islanders

The Quebecois Handball Federation will be sending a preliminary entry that consists of two 14-team lists: Primary team and the Alternates.

Fun note: It is expected that for the first group stage, the Quebecois national handball team will be practicing in the beautiful beaches of Mont-Vert, where they will be trying the beautiful game of beach handball during the practice hours. The sport, while still on its infancy in Quebec & Shingoryeo, is viewed by the Quebecois handball community to hold particular promise, especially for youth development purposes.

Their beach practices also coincide with the men's team members holding the 'Handball Quebec Presents the Grim Reapers', a mankini competition where all fourteen contestants of the competition will be judged and ranked while wearing a mankini. While the contest itself is considered to be unprecedented by a major Quebecois federation, with minor media controversies drawn back home, the QHF makes it clear that best of intentions are in mind with this contest. Money generated from the Mankini contest and the pinup calendars of Quebecois handball teams (both men and women this time, with the contest M.C. Shrek Wazowski joining the fun as well) will be donated to Græntfjaller Red Cross (GRC), aiming to help out the refugees of Nyowani Kitara.

SYLESTONE HANDBALL INTRANATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Season Two - Season Overview & Previews 1-5

After the Chamberley Crocodiles emerged victorious from the inaugural season of the SHIT, clear of their closest rivals by a whopping six points, all twelve franchises are back for another two years of handballing thrill! As the Handball World Cup (HWC) and thus the World Club Handball Championships (WCHC) run biannually, the SHIT has adapted to that and thus will include three rounds this season, instead of last season’s two. That makes 33 matches for each of the teams, and roughly half that per year. Although that does raise home advantage issues, 22 matches simply seems too small for a two-year gap, while 44 will be way too many. The best of both worlds, in one sense.

Despite being only in its second season of running, there is a lot of expectation on the SHIT in general, particularly those who made last year’s WCHC. Of those four, two of them topped their groups, champions Chamberley Crocodiles the standout with ten wins in their ten games. The Avondale Avengers, with a 7-1-2 record, were one of the sides to not finish on top, the Karvian Tigers from Bollonich pipping them despite the Avengers taking out three of four points from their head-to-head matches. The Poopers were the other one, with the same record, but could only take out two points over the first-placed Vreton Bulls, of whom they beat 36-21 away from home in arguably their most dominant performance ever. The Betham Sunrisers, with only one loss to go alongside their nine wins, were the other Sylestonean side to top their group.

But in the round of 16, they were the only Sylestonean team to go out, falling short by seven aggregate points to the Montreal 76ers. With three of the eight teams in the quarterfinals, the Esportivans seemed to have the greatest chance, but even there, they were dealt a huge blow, the Crocodiles beaten by a mere one point in both legs by Bollonischian powerhouse Akusha Rovers in a set of two thrilling matches. This paired the Pesfield Poopers and the Avondale Avengers against each other in the single-legged semifinal, and it was there that the Poopers managed to overcome their rivals, 32-26, to secure the multiverse’s best-named handball club a spot in the final. And it seemed nothing was going to stop them.

The Akusha Rovers from Bollonich tried their best, though, the two sides sparring each other in unarguably the most intriguing game of all, neither able to gain much of a lead over the other. With just 19 seconds remaining on the clock, the Poopers scored their 24th goal of the match to equalise, pushing the game into extra time. The Poopers scored first, but the Rovers bounced back with just 40 seconds left. But that would not deter the Poopers, scoring the winning goal of the match with less than ten seconds remaining, sending the arena into absolute chaos. The Poopers had won, and the SHIT was now the best handball league in the multiverse.

Now, back down the ground again, please. Following the Poopers’ success on the world stage, the Sylestone Handball Association of Teams (SHAT) has opted to allow international players into the league. As a result, players from Bollonich, Quebec and Shingoryeo, Græntfjall, Juvencus and Skopja have all appeared, with each club, save the Sentient Sapients, picking up at least one international. It will be interesting to see how they fare.

Avondale Avengers

Overview:
After finishing third on the world stage, the Avondale Avengers are coming into this SHIT brimming with confidence. However, after losing gun goalkeeper Ben Ackman to the Dunkirk Daredevils, the Avengers don’t quite seem the powerhouse they were last season. They are still certainly one to challenge for the title, though, and will refuse to go down without a fight, especially with the likes of national captain Isla McCartney and Quebecois pivot Gye Joo-Ha amongst their ranks. They finished third last season, equal on points with the Betham Sunrisers in second and the Pesfield Poopers in fourth. Can they continue their WCHC form and really push for their first title?

Key players include Seth Bon, Gye Joo-ha, Isla McCartney, Chloe Rason and Maya Windeyer.

Avondale Stars

Overview:
Almost unarguably the weaker of the two Avondale franchises, the Stars have been quietly been building up quite a force over the past few months, including Juven goalkeeper Angelo Piotri and Skopjan winger Venijamin Atanasov. Amongst their squad, youngsters Archer Livingston and Zane Ecuyer, at only 24 and 19 years of age respectively, seem destined to play an integral role, while experienced left-back Jeremy Loyau stays on for another season. Complete with Cameron McRae as head coach, it is a side that certainly has immense capability and may even - dare I say it - challenge for the top four.

Key players include Venijamin Atanasov, Zane Ecuyer, Archer Livingston, Jeremy Loyau and Angelo Piotri.

Betham Sunrisers

Overview:
Another one of the “big four” alongside the Avondale Avengers, Chamberley Crocodiles and Pesfield Poopers, the Betham Sunrisers are predicted to once again finish inside the top four this season and make a serious bid at their inaugural title. After going 9-0-1 in the WCHC group stage last year, they will be brimming with confidence despite their early round of 16 exit to the Montreal 76ers and will certainly want to put up a serious challenge for the title. With arguably the strongest forward line in the SHIT - persisting of Zachary Radcliffe, Ellie McKean and Quebecois pivot Isaiah Goh-Lewis - opposition defences will have to be at their very best to even stand a chance and anything less, the points may as well go to the Sunrisers before the match has even started.

Key players include Oscar Dumaresq, Isaiah Goh-Lewis, Ellie McKean, Zachary Radcliffe and Hudson Windsor.

General Information:
Home Stadium: Seaside Arena (cap. 7,500)

Chamberley Crocodiles

Overview:
Well, what a team the Crocodiles are. Out of their seven starters, four of them have represented their nation before, and a fifth being one of Bollonich’s best wingers. That leaves two players - Savannah Kidman and Noah Zelman - and neither are shabby at all. No wonder this side is so dominant, even on the world stage, where they won all ten of their group stage matches before being surprisingly eliminated by the eventual runners-up, Akusha Rovers, in the quarterfinals. Despite that, the club remain hot favourites to take out their second title in two editions, and anything less will disappoint fans to no end. Can they pull it off?

Key players include Lachlan Fosbrook, Samantha Hussey, Stella Murakami, Lole Strezlecki and Tom Thorly.

Chamberley Snakes

Overview:
The weaker of the two Chamberley franchises, the Snakes have taken a bit of a boost with the signings of centre-back Charles Phillip and Græntfjaller Damon Zachariasson. However, despite that, they still appear to have a side that will struggle to make a mark on the tournament, and seem destined for a position in the bottom six. They will fight hard, though, and have a side that gelled together rather well last season, so you never know what they could be capable of. It will be interesting to see how they fare.

Key players include Jordan Burns, Stephanie Levien, Carmen Penn, Charles Phillip and Damon Zachariasson.

General Information:

Sajnur National Handball Team

In Sajnur, handball is normally played in universities and local clubs, and as such has no national professional scene. However, there is enough support in the bigger cities that semi-professional state leagues and a national cup competition take place every year, and the Handball World Cup will, with Sajnur's entry, be televised for the first time. With the Sajnuran Football Federation in shambles over its failure to gain entry into World Cup qualifying, Kudo Avani was given the job to scout and amass the best handball talent in the country, and even picked up two national team footballers in goalkeeper Piotr Laghiev and forward Ella Ciuru, the former being by far the oldest player in the team. Whether Sajnur will go far remains to be seen, but really everyone's just here to have a good time.

There were a couple of things different about the Sarzonian national handball team as they broke their training camp.

Only one player was not on the team that lost in the Handball World Cup semifinals in Sylestone who started on the squad. That was Vivianne Taylor, the back who did not get on with goalkeeper Pat Agnew. Manager Joyce Rodham kicked Taylor off the squad after HWC 24 and told the sport's governing body in Sarzonia that she would resign if Taylor were to return.

For the record, no one on the team or among the managerial staff would go on record about the feud between Taylor and Agnew or Taylor's absence from the team. However, Agnew spoke glowingly about the chemistry on the team during the final days of training.

"It's like night and day," they said. "It feels so much better right now." They said they now get on with all their mates, including the two reserve goalkeepers.

"We have a great time together pushing each other to be better goalkeepers and better people in general," Agnew said. "And we have a lot of fun together off the pitch."

The Stars will enter Handball World Cup 25 in Græntfjall without the pressure of trying to maintain a winning streak that reached 23 matches before their 33-32 overtime defeat to Sylestone in the semifinals. Sarzonia started Javier Lopez in goal in the third place playoff and Georgre Wompers for Taylor. Now Agnew was back in goal and Wompers won the role as starter for the Sarzonian team. Wompers said he would simply try to play his own game, realising he couldn't replace Taylor's experience. Wompers brings size and bulk to his new position as starter and said he hoped to use those to his advantage.

"She was her own player. I'm my own player," he said. "I bring things to the table she didn't. She brought things I didn't. Now we're going to have to adapt."

Sarzonia will begin the first group stage against regional foes and familiar opponents in Qasden, who are ranked 13th along with 16th Raspotochje and unranked Kannap. The Stars open with Kannap, then face Qasden and Raspotochje in order. Rodham said she already warned her side about the potential for the Kannap match to be a so-called trap match.

"I don't want us getting caught failing to prepare for Kannap because Qasden are our next opponent afterwards," she said. "That's a risk when you face a lower-ranked side before a major clash with an important rival."

Postby Octapolis » Tue Feb 08, 2022 10:25 pm

About Octapolis: Octapolis is a megacity that is contained in a spaceship that orbits the known universe. This megacity is split into eight distinct sections, Districts 1-8, which have their own inhabitants, cultures, and functions. Octapolis is ruled over by the Council of Eight, of which one is the OmegaCaptain. Currently, the OmegaCaptain, K'sh'ar Hynn, a Brinoghan, has decided that a scout craft will be allowed to take some of the best youth footballers of Octapolis (straight out of the Academy League) to the U-21 tournament.

The Species of Octapolis:
Brinoghan: Akin to earth's turtles that stand on their hind two feet, Brinoghans have a tough shell that protect most of their body. In Ocatapois, most of the Brinoghans inhabit District 1, where they are responsible for the star drive and machinery that keep the megacity spaceship running. They are quick-thinking, industrious, and work well together with the other species. In sports, Brinoghans are used best in situations where they can collaborate with others to set up plays. In football, they usually play in the midfield or on the wings, ready to create at all times.

Fashtel: A thin, spindly humanoid race, Fashtel are recognizable by their almost transparent skin and bald features. Monogendered, Fashtel are created at the very place where the previous one died, which has led to a culture that treats death as a celebration. Fashtel find themselves mostly in District 2, where they task themselves being the industrial center of Octapolis, making the various household goods and appliances that are needed for the city to run. In sports, Fashtel are best used in situations where physicality is not needed. In football, Fashtel are a rare sight, but can make appearances as strikers who just happen to be at the right spot.

Kan Goren: A quadrupedal race that average about five feet six inches in height, Kan Goren are recognizable by the twin horns that protrude from their forehead and the glorious mane that flow down their backs. Kan Goren are a race that love to be in community. Living in District 3, Kan Goren are, by nature, strong and hardworking farmers that grow all the food that the megacity needs in order to survive. In sports, Kan Goren are used in situations where power is needed more than speed. In football, Kan Goren make great defenders.

Ysrbi: Yserbi are a hive of insectoid creatures that resemble that of a praying mantis with four wings on the back. Yserbi work well together, being able to communicate with each other telepathically. This makes them absolutely great soldiers, making District 4 the military district of Octapolis. Yserbi make up more than 80% of the Octapolis military, making great foot soldiers, space marines, and the like. Yserbi are used very often in sports due to their telepathic nature, often times being pairs on football teams.

Basalt-Ani: A robotic species that gained sapience during the journeys of Octapolis, Basalt-Ani make up more than 61% of the population of Octapolis, and inhabit Districts 5-8, where they are responsible for everything else. They can vary in size and configuration, there being more than twenty different models. Basalt-Ani are in almost any sports team, and football is no exception.

Gaban'Hasana: Gaban'Hasana take care of the spiritual needs of Octapolis. A priesthood of spiritual beings - other species would call them "ghosts", Gaban'Hasana have been with Octapolis since it was launched from the home galaxy eons ago, and remain there still. The words of the Gaban'Hasana are revered, and their direction has never been questioned. There are nine Gaban'Hasana, and each of them have their own distinct form. As they are the Priesthood, they don't play sports.

Introducing.... Dr. Behai's M-21s!

Dr. Behai, one of the most celebrated mechanical engineers, scientists, and philosophers of the age, have partnered with the Grand Institute of Jehanashan in the development and the presentation of the newest line of the Basalt-Ani - the M21 line!

For five years, there had only been twenty models, with the M20s being over three meters tall and rather wide, used mostly for construction projects. Now, Dr. Behai, the best Fashteli scientist of the generation, has completed the best model of Basalt-Anis to do what the Grand Council has been the most interested in - in the realm of sports.

Now, fourteen of these models will be chosen to participate in the first tournament - the Handball World Cup, having been programmed to play the sport. They are as tall as usual individuals that play sports, differing from 180 to 200 cm tall, and as all the Basalt-Ani do, grow in personality and life as they take in more of the world.

Let us meet them!

Dr. Behai says that they will be the best Basalt-Ani to ever be a part of a sporting squad; they are hoping that the Basalt-Anis - known as "The Twenty-Ones" - will play the sport as meant and show some modicum of success. Every species of Octapolis will be watching with rapt attention.

The National Handball Association of Muralos | La Muralana Asocio de Manpilko

*Initial team is underlined

The Muralosian national handball team comes out of a considerably long slumber. They last competed at the 16th Handball World Cup in Ethane, where they were in the bottom of the group stage, going 0-1-2. While they had close games, including a 29-31 loss to then world no. 6 Gregoryisgodistan, their poor sportsmanship created a very poor impression among Muralosian sports fans. How the Hawks will perform at this Handball World Cup, almost five years later, is very much a mystery.

Hungry for Handball
with Aisling Keane

For some reason or another, handball is still going strong here in Abanhfleft. Those two times that our team was able to make it to the semifinals must have certainly helped its cause here. In fact, it’s helped the cause so much that there is now serious talk of establishing a national handball league in the country! Yes, you heard that right. Handball is finally getting a league of its own here in Abanhfleft. The days of handball being an absolute fringe sport with only a few players here and there in a small geographic location must be over now, huh? Now there are apparently enough handball players in the country to justify the formation of an actual league. Granted, from what I’ve seen, this new handball league is mostly going to be centered around the northern part of the country, which makes sense because the northern bits around Mezaladbyi and the Myleishi Plateau have been considered the “heartland” of handball in Abanhfleft, so to speak. But there are also obvious attempts to grow the game down south, but whether that actually works? Who knows?

There’s one thing that the new handball league has got going for it, though: the 25th Handball World Cup is upon us, and interest in the sport is certain to skyrocket, as it always does when an event featuring one of Abanhfleft’s myriad national teams gets shown on TV. As long as the national team is participating, any sport is certain to get a rise in popularity in the country once it’s shown here. However, when Abanhfleft goes out of the tournament early, such as in the group stage or the round of 16 (I could say if, but we all know that it’s not a matter of if but when, right?), it’s kinda hard to maintain that interest. So should the inevitable occur and the national handball team gets sent packing home early, my hope is that the new handball league will be there to give the people interested in this sport something else to watch while waiting for the next Handball World Cup to come around. Again, I reiterate that this is merely my hope for how this new league will proceed. It’s entirely possible that they will go in a completely different direction to one that I hope that they will take, and that’s somewhat fine with me because it’s their business and they can do with it whatever they want. I’m not their mother to scold them for whatever. But I really think that if they don’t do what I think they should do then this league could fold within a few years.

Anyway, while we’re on the subject of the Handball World Cup, why don’t we talk about it a little bit? 28 nations earned the right to participate in the most prestigious competition for handball in the entire multiverse, and they’ve been split into seven groups of four. Personally, I don’t know why the organizers went with this format, but then again, what do I really know about organizing tournaments? I can’t even organize my own bloody life! What hope do I have of organizing a thing where dozens of players have to interact with each other over the course of two weeks to a whole bloody month? Anyway, Abanhfleft have been drawn in the Melayu Archipelago Group, and we’re set to go up against the Sevens Federation, Græntfjall, and Muralos. The Sevens Federation are our first opponent, and apart from the fact that they’re not related at all to the nation of Sevendia despite the seeming obsession with the number seven, there’s nothing that I can tell any of you bastards about those bastards. Græntfjall though, now I have a lot to say about those folks! Well, not a whole lot that’s directly relevant to handball, but let’s just say that Græntfjall have made a name for themselves over here at Gaelic Gamers. A word of caution though: that name is not something I can really repeat here for fear of getting slapped on the wrist by the prudes. Let’s just say the Man from Markovsky didn’t take too kindly to these guys beating us in the Di Bradini Cup and leave it at that, yeah? And, last but not the least, there’s Muralos. They’re a common sight in other sports but this is the first time that they’ve dipped their toes into handball. Whether they’re any good at it or if this will be their one and only appearance in the HWC remains to be seen; however, we can’t discount them simply because of that. Knowing Abanhfleft’s luck and the fact that they’re the last team that we have to play in the group stage, they’ll suddenly turn into prime Savojarna and thump us heavily.

Well, that’s all that I can say about our latest opponents in the Handball World Cup. I don’t know what else you want me to say about them because I’ve been lagging on my handball knowledge lately and, aside from the new handball league, I’m completely out of the loop. In fact, I might just talk about the prospective teams in this new league in the next few days alongside all of the Handball World Cup that I’m duty-bound to engage in. Maybe through all that, the national team will get lucky and finally win this championship. It’s a long shot, but as the saying goes, you miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take. The only trouble with a long shot is that there’s a lot of other factors to take into account to even just make sure that it lands within the vicinity of the target. But I will also say this: anything beyond the round of 16 or its equivalent here will be pretty much a win for me.

Winners and losers - A story of National Sporting Success

Sports movies have been a minimally explored department of Bollonischian cinema with sports success being quite rare for the country. This however has changed over the last few decades with Bollonischian athletes being seen in sports all over the multiverse with great success in handball, cricket and many other sports. Handball has been by far the most successful sport for the Bollonischians with two major accolades being won by the side. A gold medal for the men’s side in the Olympics and a World Cup won at the 24th Handball World Cup. These accolades naturally provide with some good content for possible movies or documentaries to make this story of success of the nation reach out to as many people as possible. With the beginning of the 25th Handball World Cup just round the corner in Gosjek of Zelena Planina, the release of this movie at this moment is arguably a great strategic decision to make the maximum profits at the cinemas. Titled, Winners and Losers, the film encompasses the days spent in Quebec and Shingoryeo and Sylestone by our players in their efforts to win the 24th Handball World Cup.
Directed by Neil Coombs the movie picks up right at the celebrations of the gold medal won in Bunjil, Electrum. As it takes us through the happy highs of the players it sets us up for the challenge and overcoming of these challenges in the future through a taste of what success feels like. We then see the team’s oldest player Reggie Mutton spending his off days with his family, before a family outing is interrupted by excited and elated fans on having met their idol. Coombs masterfully managed to explore the downsides of being a popular athlete as well with Mutton being unable to enjoy even a day with his family without the interruption of excited fans. From the lives of players to their activities in the Bollonischian Handball League, and while the movie might be mainly a showcase of Bollonischian success at the 24th Handball World Cup, it also presents an overall overview of what Handball looks like in Bollonich which should allow these athletes to be more relatable for the common people.
For a movie about sports, it in itself however contains very little sporting scenes focusing on the more emotional aspect of sports. It gives us a look at what goes on behind the windows, in the dressing rooms and also a study of the mysterious and Head coach of the Handball side Trix Joseph. Being a very reserved man in his own right, he has done very well to steer clear of public image something which is highlighted in the movie. We also get to see the very drastic positive impacts of him being the Head Coach in providing support, encouragement and also tidbits of Handball knowledge to improve the game of certain players. As we make our way through the 13 games of the World Cup we also get to have a better look at what particular players do before matches, made possible by the intense hardworking of the creative team over the last two years in the creation of this film.
The nature of the film does not give us any sort of twist in the conclusion and despite the predictable ending to the film, it was a joyful ride of ups and downs following the team through our 11 victories and 2 defeats in the tournament. The movie uses great cinematography and screenplay to create a surreal environment for the viewers, allowing the viewers to feel the pressure and chaos that is entailed in the world of sports.
