Gatchingerrak Union Men's Basketball Team - IBC 33

The Joint Federation of the Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori Nations (JFGURN), departing from the practice set by the Basketball Quebec (BQ), will be sending a men's national team.

IC Information

Gatchingerrak Union of Rushmori nations, shortened as the Gatchingerrak Union, is a cultural and political alliance of four countries of the Quebecois Commonwealth located in mid-southern Rushmore (Norrskie Zasousti, Norrehavn, Gatchinovo and Novopetrograd, with an incoming membership by the Ilyrian Isles). The three kingdoms and the citystate, while independent nations of own, do have the Gatchingerrak Union as a way to establish their common zone, where their main goals are to advance co-operation in military, cultural, economic and energy matters. It shares land border with Vaugania and Norrhem to the west, while bits of the east touch Phoenigetzusta. Combined population of the union are estimated to be around 83 million.

While its trio of nations have always fought with one another for centuries, Gatchingerrak Union is a culturally diverse nation with growing importance outside to that of the Quebecois Commonwealth. Its population is ethnically diverse, with the eastern, Novopetrogradian half of the realms primarily Slavic, while the Western half is divided to primarily Nordic Norrehavn on north and slavic Norrskie Zasousti on the south. Somewhere in middle of the lake, which faces all of the three nations, stands the island that is nowadays known as the citystate of Gatchinovo, the ancient place known for its significance on trades and diplomacy among the Rushmori realms of the Quebecois Commonwealth. It is where the Accord between the 4 states were signed in year 2030 (around the time of WC78), to promise co-prosperity among the rivalling states whose cooperation is needed more than ever. Its economy is a mix of natural resources and heavy manufacturing for it.

A no stranger to international sport, Gatchingerrak Union does have a past history of international football and hockey, where its western realms were represented as Norrehavn. It has hosted a Copa Rushmori and a World Cup of Hockey, and both sports are extremely popular. Unfortunately, the long years of absence from the international sporting circuit does mean that it is expected to be a long way back to relevance for the seven-stars.

48 Lars Pozdnitseff 21 2.16 Centre (C)
60 Jaromir Sidlik 28 2.08 Power Forward (PF)

Offensive Tactic: A mix of Princeton and Isolation Offence.
Defensive Tactic: Man-to-Man. This is a team with good height and wingspan and they are surprisingly quick enough on feet (for their frame, that is).
Note: This team relies a lot on two players - superstar centre Lars Pozdnitseff of Gatchinovo citystate and point guard Roman Auda. Auda's a tall point guard with good athleticism but most importantly shooting touch, while Pozdnitseff is a fundamentally sound defender whose strength and conditioning need to work out better for the grind of international basketball. Otherwise, this team consists mostly of sharp-shooters on the outside and tall, defensive guys on the paint.

Depth Chart
PG: Auda (Tsintsadze - Rannikko)
SG: Miromanov (Bondarko - Rannikko)
C: Pozdnitseff (Dalaloyan - Douma)

United Adaikes started strong, but the experienced Nova Anglicana players turned the game around to win.

The newcomers showed that they could play ball, but a late rally - and a flagrant foul in the last quarter - changed the game's momentum.

The Adaikesian side ended the first quarter with a 12-point lead, 23-11. The scoring run began just 3 minutes after the game started, with a three-pointer from UABA reigning MVP Lamont Mayer, extending their lead from 4 to 7, 11-4. Brynne Vance also contributed 7 points, the most by a player in the quarter. Vance had 10 points in the half. Nova Anglicana only shot 3 for 17 in that quarter, 0-3 in 3-point shooting, compared to UAD's 10 for 19 field goals.

The terrible shooting continued for Nova Anglicana in the second quarter but has also infected United Adaikes as they only shot a combined 10 for 35 shooting. NOV's Matty Stewart and Reggie LaPointe were scoreless in the first half, shooting 0-9. Good defense from the two teams was also the majority of the play in the second quarter, with UAD getting 7 of their eight turnovers for the 1st half just in the second quarter. UAD's Kimball Clay also got to foul trouble early in the game, having already at three before the half ended. Nova Anglicana managed to get closer with the Adaikesians before the end of the half, 27-33.

At the resumption of play, LaPointe scored the first 5 points for Nova Anglicana to get the lead down to 1. However, the Adaikesians also stretched their lead by eight, 46-38, with less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Ronnie Jeffries, the Most Defensive Player in the domestic United Adaikes league, contributed 10 points and a couple of blocks in the quarter. Jeffries had 20 points and ten boards in the game. An 8-4 run by Nova Anglicana, with Jimmy Haynes contributing 4 points, cut down the Adaikesians' lead by 4, 50-46. Jimmy Haynes was the top scorer in the game, finishing with 21 points.

The game got to only the second tie in points, just less than 9 minutes left at 57-all. The first tie was 2-2 at the start of the game. Nova Anglicana got their first lead of the game, 59-60, after Vance got an unsportsmanlike foul after a rebounding battle with Haynes. In the post-game interview, Vance said that he was only trying to catch Haynes on what he saw was a wrong angle for him to be going down. Nova Anglicana never looked back and already secured the win with a 69-63 lead, with 11 seconds remaining. Mayer finished the game with a three-pointer, ending it at 69-66 with 1.1 seconds on the clock.

In the post-game interview, Coach Woodrow shared that the team needs to exert more effort to get their game together, missing fewer shots, losing the ball less, and having a calm mind while playing.

Teams Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
United Adaikes 23 33(10) 50(17) 66(16)

As have said from a week ago, it took the stunned Grim Reapers a lot of time, discussion and bonding to recover from the emotional toil that was brought upon them by their now-ex manager, men's team coach Edouard-Noel Halbert. Some of the players, who knew enough about the Montreal Koreana club coach's cheating ways, chose to stay quiet, while the others were simply unable to play for the Grim Reapers' on their tournament opening loss to Andoran Systems. Many fans, surprised and shocked with how everything had cracked for the Quebecois basketball team, were worried about what was going to happen to them - are they going to give up? Are these players, struck with a horrible news, not going to recover? All of those were valid concerns, and the media spent endless hours covering about said 'mini-crisis'.

Fortunately, the Grim Reapers were able to regroup quickly enough, as every single player on the twenty-four team rotation (out of thirty-player roster that included 6 alternates) entered the court in a 102-79 win over Equestria at l'Arc-en-Ciel, Quebec City. Unlike the previous downer of the match, the Grim Reapers came out on fire early, landing 18 three-point shots and outrebounding Equestria 58-39 to secure a 23-point win over the Equestria side they had faced so often over the past decade. The victory, and how the Grim Reapers rebounded from their previous disaster, brought slight hope to the Quebecois fans back home and abroad, as they hoped this cycle's Grim Reapers, even without two star guards (Heo Myeong-Yoon of CSKA Quebec and Franck Briere-Bourque of California City Lakers) and super-centre Yim Se-Ryeong (South Bend Sakers).

Unfortunately, even after the massive win, the Grim Reapers were about to be hit with another shocker...

Basketball Quebec President Gustave Seo-Hovington announces retirement after a decade

Martine-Reanne Musso

QUEBEC CITY, CAPITALE-NATIONALE - Basketball Quebec Board of Governors announced this morning that Gustave Seo-Hovington will be retiring as the President of Basketball Quebec, effective immediately. Alan Kimmirut, the Vice President - International for the Basketball Quebec and current Quebecois representative to the International Basketball Organisation, has been appointed as Seo-Hovington's successor.

'It has been my pleasure, as the President, to direct this wonderful organisation for the past decade of my life, where we have seen excellent progress and impactful developments made to improve the status of Quebecois basketball,' said Seo-Hovington. 'And I owe all of this to you at Basketball Quebec, our affiliated organisations, and everyone involved in our beautiful game. I am sure we will continue to progress well.'

With decades of experience in sports adminstration, Seo-Hovington will remain involved with the Basketball Quebec as the Chair of its Collegiate and Amateur Basketball Committee, the Advisor for the High-Performance Committee and the Director of Basketball Quebec Centre of Excellence, currently based in IRSEA-Saclay, Quebec City. He will also continue to serve as the Quebecois representative on the IUBC board, currently based in Canterlot, Equestria.

'Basketball Quebec will be placed under highly capable hands in Alan Kimmirut, who I have no doubts will be a great President, and we have a great team from the Board of Governors to the very last member of the staff,' Seo-Hovington said. 'I have no regrets, that's for sure. I look forward to continue my commitment with Basketball Quebec, and other opportunities that may come up in life, that's for sure. There is lots of work to be done to continue keeping our basketball competitive on international stage, that's for sure.'

In his ten years, Seo-Hovington was instrumental in navigating the Basketball Quebec through difficult situations and positioned Basketball Quebec to continued international success with the last three Strategic Plans. The first two of three plans, 2045-Victorium and 2050-33 Olympia, have culminated with the Quebecois' third-place finish in the 2046 30th International Basketball Championships, and the women's national team's silver medal finish in the 2050 Summer Olympics. In addition, he directed and oversaw the merger of the Quebecois Association of Collegiate Basketball (QACB) and the Quebecois Collegiate Basketball Commission (QCBC) into one joint body, the Quebecois Amateur Basketball Board (QABB), an organisation directly under the charge of Basketball Quebec.

Under Seo-Hovington's leadership, Quebec and Shingoryeo has made significant progress in its profile. He was instrumental in establishing a six-year broadcast, event and online partnership with the QBC Sports and True North Sports for the QBL, QWBL and international basketball seasons. He was instrumental in developing improved relationship with the IUBC and the IBC. During his tenure, Basketball Quebec partnered with the Bollonischian Basketball Association to win the rights to host the International Basketball Championships in Quebec and Bollonich, scheduled for next september.

'Having worked with him over the years, from his early days with IRSEA-Saclay and Queen's College, and to the last few years of our time together with Basketball Quebec, all I can say is that he has made genuine impact on the sport over the years,' said Mauro Chiarelli, Director, Basketball Quebec Board of Governor. 'I would like to thank Gustave for his service and dedication to the game in Quebec and Shingoryeo, and abroad, and will be looking forward to his continued involvement with the Basketball Quebec under various capacities.'

Native of Anju, Abitibi-Temiscamingue, Seo-Hovington first came to Quebec City as the Associate AD-Academic at the Institut Royal du Sport, de l'Expertise et des Academiques (IRSEA-Saclay), high performance sports training institution based as an institution within Université St. Croix. During his four years with the program, he was particularly remembered for his contribution to the postsecondary institute's expansion in academic curriculum. He subsequently continued his career in high-profile appointments, first with his five-year tenure as the High Performance Co-Coordinator at the CSKA Quebec, where he oversaw the senior and youth departments of the Royal Quebecois Armed Forces club's women's basketball, handball and fencing divisions. Most recently, prior to joining Basketball Quebec in 2041, Seo-Hovington spent last eight years as the High Performance Program coordinator and Athletics Director at Queen's College at Cornwall.

Married to barrister Jeanne Maudsley, member of the Queen's Counsel, Seo-Hovington resides in Quebec City. They have four children- former college basketball player Adolphe, educator Mathinna, national team wrestler Ray and current St. Croix student Hannah.

Tom Powell hit an improbable buzzer beater to clinch a thrilling and vital win for Hannasea at the Unity City in TJUN-ia. Powell, who led Hannasea with a 27 point, 8 rebound, 4 assist showing, was double teamed on the final play but hit the tough jumper from a tight angle as he fell down. The shot killed off an impressive comeback by the Jaguars, who had trailed 47–32 at the half. Adamo Zamenhofo had been identified as the main offensive threat for the Hoops-Jags and was the subject of double teams all night, but he proved adept at passing out of them, while the ageing Demarcus Winston provided a reminder that he can still ball as he put up 26 points, 9 rebounds. The win puts Hannasea top in the group ahead of a double home stand against Essena and Trolleborg.

Greetings, compatriots! It’s TTV with most actual news about our national basketball team.
As you all know, our sportsmans begin this World Cup cycle with national leader Vladimir Finn as a coach. After last games of the previous tournament Army Arena was discarded as a permanent home for the team, because it was too small and also right now tied to the unlucky defeats and first sporting riots of the modern era. Vladimir Finn make it clear that he wanted team to play in the every big city around the country and begin with Murnau, the second bigger one. Local fans was delighted, to say the least. National leader despite all his tasks spent full two days before the game with team in the hotel that located in secluded forest near Murnau. From the available footage we can see players engaged in almost every sort of деятельности - heavy physical loads, slow walks in the woods around with a lively conversations and heated debates, tactical exercises, joint viewing of films. As it became known to TTV, the whole team watched with special interest the mini-series “Melayu Cup” in the evenings, which tells about the victory of the players in this tournament.

Directly from there, the basketball players arrived at the sports palace, where they will have a game with Pemecutan, about an hour and a half before the game, they had a warm-up in the hall, as well as a intense tactical lesson in the changing room. This is evidenced by the electronic tablets on which the players are usually shown their tasks, crossed out along and across.

Opponents are only slightly below our team in the world table of ranks, and they are definitely not keen to give victory to our basketballers without a fight. Our team, despite the strong support from the stands, finished the first quarter with only two points of advantage, and once during this part of the game ended up in the laggards. To the long break, the difference was only three points, and only then our basketball players were able to make the advantage less shaky - six by the end of the third quarter and seven by the end of the game. And only a few seconds before the end, the fans were able to breathe out when a three-pointer from a Pesoglavec, who play a great game, made the gap more or less comfortable. Nevertheless, victory is a victory, and we congratulate everyone involved.

The most 'urban' of our sports is back - and don't confuse 'urban' for 'urban', please! Basketball doesn't play much of a role in the metropolises, but it's somewhat popular in the densely packed cities and towns along the coast. It's not an 'inner city' thing and more of a 'we can play this when there's not enough space for football or rugby' thing in any kind of suburb. It's the only sport that has a decent amount of players without a centrally organised structure, just because it's so easy to pick up. That said, there are as many courts as there are different rulesets and rarely do they play the full 48 minutes.

The twelve professional clubs are from three different regions. Four clubs are from the capitals. Four are from Aminey and its surroundings. And four are from the hot, southeastern cities of Santa Teresa and Ferrovente. The league is not at a place yet where a huge feeder system is an option, financially, though if costs can be kept to a minimum there's no reason not to recognise a second tier. The league recognises the rules of the host city, which means that players have to study up on the local style of play. Santa Teresa plays four quarters of 10 minutes (instead of 12). Aminey's overtime ends when a team gets a 6-point lead (instead of a fixed 5-minute term). The shot clock is 30 seconds (instead of 24) in the capitals. And those are the weirdest ones, ever since Ferrovente was forced to give up its 1/2/3 point lines, and now the Gehrenna Lions have a stadium large enough that there are two baskets instead of an Olympic-style 3v3 rule.

The Banijan precedent for multiple different leagues is definitely known on the Dragonfly archipelago. There are plans for additional pro leagues - and why wouldn't they. In Ko-oren, it's a fairly low cost sport to organise with few players needed, as opposed to the massive rosters of our other events.

To that backdrop, the national team is doing its best to convert a lot of new fans. Versus the two very highly ranked Indusse and Kriegiersien, the Dragonflies showed flashes of brilliance of generations past, where Ko-oren repeatedly beat good teams like these in much the same way (where it's a miracle if both teams combine for 100 points). Indusse was a tough nut to crack, with a dozen lead changes, fast breaks, counterattacks, and few defensive rebounds. To the very final second, the game could go either way: from 87-89, to 89-89, to 91-89, 91-91, and finally a 91-93 win. The Kriegiersien game was more our pace, with plenty of defensive rebounds and steals, few errors on either side, but also a game where the Ko-orenites managed to outpace their opponents in easy baskets. Going inside for two instead of trying a risky three is our bread and butter and the opponents did little to prevent them. When our opponents then miss a heap of three-point attempts to crawl back into the game, we kept running low on the shot clock, then dribbled inside for a fairly easy attempt at a two, and you're enjoying an even bigger lead. This all hinges on us actually building a lead in the first place, among other things, but it's nice to see a game going exactly as we hope. Drawkland and Magnecia are also 2-0. Ko-oren cannot drop to fourth or below for matchday three at least, and while our 2-0 record oversells our quality quite a bit, it's nice to see a few games go our way instead of whatever happened towards the end of the IBC 32 group stage. In that tournament, the exact same team went 3-13 with as much, or maybe even more enthusiasm as this tournament. Two games in, and we've pretty much equalled our accomplishments. The luck will run out, sure, but so far it feels like a delayed payout from some extremely unlucky IBC 32 finishes.

Selection of articles from Græntfjaller news media.

BASKETBALL: Block party as Super Wolves claim crucial win over second seeds

Benjamin Iirosson came up with the key block on the final play of the game in a close 78–77 win over the Nova Anglicana Lions. The game saw contrasting styles meet: the Lions going small-ball with fast outside shooters, the Snow Wolves leaning heavily on size and strength at the expense of speed and spacing. Though Iirosson put up 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, he far from feasted in the absence of a big man opposite him as Colin Klein and Alain Colbert played surprisingly effective defense on him. Colbert led the Lions with 15 points, while Colbert used his speed to rack up a 10 point–14 rebound double–double. The game was tight throughout, with the Lions taking a 1 point lead to the half after an evenly matched first quarter, the Super Wolves taking a 2 point lead in the third quarter, before an all square fourth quarter settled it. Antoníus Lorisson hit two clutch 3 pointers later on, and the Lions’ shooting touch deserted them in the final four minutes, going 1–6 from the field with 3 turnovers. On the final play, Reggie LaPointe drove for the game-winning layup only to have Iirosson reject the shot on the buzzer.

FOOTBALL: Farf striker shocks Háttmark with cross-town move

Çè Quîrîjá has broken the unwritten rule of Græntfjaller football and signed with Gunzlach, arch-rivals of his former club Steinaux. In the past three decades no player has ever played for both teams at senior level, but the move is particularly given Çè Quîrîjá’s high profile with Steinaux, who are still reeling from the loss of their club captain, Petter Erlingsson, who was eaten by a kraken during the off-season. Çè Quîrîjá, out of contract, had been expected to re-sign, but was instead poached by Gunzlach, who have announced the new signing with glee (while quietly getting their sponsors, web giant Qardinal, to scrub all the horrible things they’d formerly said about the Farf goal machine). A small congregation of embittered Sausages fans braved the bracing winter cold to burn Çè Quîrîjá jerseys in effigy outside the Grander International Arena, although Steinaux’s modern kit designs and commitment to safety meant the jerseys did not actually go up in flames until well dowsed in accelerant. An eyebrowless Steinaux fan said: “This is the greatest betrayal imaginable. I think Çè Quîrîjá is in for a very rough reception when he next plays here,” while another Steinaux fan agreed, saying: “Help! My hands are on fire! Aaaagh!”

VOLLEYBALL: Græntfjall mulling VWE bid? Rumors sparked by new National Sports Center court extension

Construction of a state of the art volleyball complex has begun at the National Center for Sporting Excellence in Græntfjaller Multinesia, leading to some suggestions Græntfjall may be mulling a bid to host the next Volleyball World Expo, or to engage more fully with the IVF WorldLeague. “Lots of exciting things are happening in world volleyball right now, and we’d like to be a part of it,” said Græntfjaller volleyball Olympian, Adelgunde Valentinsdóttir, newly appointed coach of the reconstituted national team. “This facility would be an exciting first step.” The rising popularity of basketball has squeezed out many volleyball clubs from indoor practice facilities, and there are hopes the new purpose-built complex will give the sport room to thrive. With volleyball being one of the major women’s sports, the news has been greeted with enthusiasm by members of the Thing’s Sports Committee, who last month criticized the state of women’s sports funding in the country. Indeed, other than the indigenous peoples whose sacred tribal grounds are being bulldozed to build the facility, almost everyone seems to be excited about the news!

SPACEBALL: New orbital space lab set for launch

The BRB–KMS (Biological Research Base – Kraken Monitoring Station) will launch tomorrow from the GANAX Cosmodrome at Segulmagnaðirborg, beginning a new 7 year mission. The six astronauts currently on board Græntfjall’s existing orbital space facility, LIB–LAB, will be joined by four new mission specialists. The modular design of the two facilities should enable them to link up. The ambitious project includes a specific biological focus, mainly geared towards investigating the possibility of EKs (extraterrestrial krakens). The project marks the first manned launch from the Cosmodrome in over a year; since its opening, 85% of all launches have been unmanned commercial satellites.

COURTBALL: Princess recalled to active duty, given first command

Princess Jessika has returned to active duty in the Græntfjaller Navy. Her plane was shot down over Montaña Verde two years ago, leading to some suggestions she should retire her active commission, but has indicated she wishes to complete her full commitment since graduating the Naval Academy five years ago. Now bearing the rank of full Lieutenant, she has been given her first command as Commanding Officer of a coastal defense cutter, a typical first command for junior officers, ahead of anticipated amphibious training next summer. The Princess, who recently completed a humanitarian tour of the Kitaran refugee camps in the Estdal region, said she was “excited to get back to work”.

DROP IT DOWN!: We Are Not Invincible After All...

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Nov 07, 2021 12:00 pm

After a dominant display kicked off our IBC33 Campaign, the Hoops-Jags looked like absolute legends out there in front of the Unity Centre faithful. Bao Zhou and his Dynasty were clicking like a well-oiled machine against Essena and certainly told the world why they were ranked #2 pre-season. But everyone knew that Game 2 of the Opening Homestand, against Hannasea, would be much tougher than Game 1. Nick Davidson is the new head coach for a team that has risen quickly to #18 at this present point. Everyone knew these guys would give it their all to try and give us a game and everyone knew this one in Riverside was going to be a fun one for the neutrals to enjoy.

As expected, this one was a very tight contest that neither side wanted to give up for the world and it will probably go down as one of the best games we were ever involved in. Zhou and Davidson dueled tactically all game, but it was the visitors who would lead after the half 47-32 thanks to some lightning plays from Tom Powell, a player the Jags couldn't deal with all game. Then came a 2nd half come back of the ages, with Travarius Okuramangawa and Adamo Zamenhofo both scoring and feeding points to no end. DeMarcus Winston scored 26 himself despite the fact he is 33 and for the final 3 minutes, it was truly back and forth basketball. Hannasea would get one final chance to try and win this game, Powell sending a jumper to the net as the buzzer sounded. It went in and just like that, the upset was complete. Hannasea won 87-84.

Zhou was quick to say that "you can't fault a buzzer beater" and that "the comeback showed our abilities overall". Sure, we did lose today, but that only goes to show that we are mortal and can still improve. The fact we were beaten that way after being down by 15 at the half must surely by a positive to take and with 8 games left to play, there is still plenty of time left to regroup and get back into the groove. We're off to Trolleborg for MD3 with a new mindset in mind: underestimate no one. GO JAGS!

Chromatika 92-73 Mytanija: Xiu's Triple-Double Leads Penguins Over Mytanija as Chromatika Establishes Early Control
Team 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q Tot
Mytanija 18 20 17 18 73
Chromatika 20 24 28 20 92
ANOMALY TOWER, CHROMIA, CAPITAL DISTRICT - Sometimes, playing with someone the caliber of Park Jung-Hyuk means that you get overshadowed. Sometimes, you don't get the accolades that you deserve.

Then, you have a game like what Lia Xiu had against Mytanija, and everyone is reminded of your brilliance.

Everyone knows that the face of Chromatik basketball is Park Jung-Hyuk. What people forget sometimes is just how good of a shooter that Lia Xiu is. The Chromatik Shooting Guard tallied thirty-five points, eleven assists and twelve rebounds, Park Jung-Hyuk also posted eighteen points and fifteen assists, and the Chromatika Penguins took control of the game midway through the first quarter and never looked back as they handled second seeds Mytanija to a tune of 92-73 at the Anomaly Tower.

Midway through the first quarter, Mytanija had a 11-8 lead when Xiu simply took over. She scored the next four baskets for the Penguins, two of them being three-pointers from the left corner, and Maude Zwaheil added two blocks in this key stretch as Chromatika took the lead 20-18 after the first stanza. Behind Xiu's eight points in the second quarter, they extended the lead to six.

Xiu would then put the game away by scoring twelve of her thirty-five points in the third quarter, with Hera Gant also tallying nine points from the bench. The Penguins' defense also showed up in the second half, holding Mytanija to thirty-five points for the final margin of nineteen.

"It was a total team effort," Xiu said after the game, putting a lot of the success on her teammates, "If it wasn't for Maude and Natalie playing solid defense, I wouldn't have had as many opportunities. Also, Park gave me the ball, and there were some good looks."

"She can absolutely take over games," stated Park, "It's nice to know that you don'pt have to do all the scoring all the time. Mytanija are a great team, and we had their number today."

Head Coach Jaudin Negore was also quick to credit the Penguins' bench, namely Hera Gant and Jericho Sand. The bench combined for more than a quarter of the team's points as Chromatika put together another complete performance.

With none of the other teams able to get two wins, the result puts Chromatika in prime position atop the group. The Penguins will have a chance to cement their standing with games against Crystal Empire and Southwest Eastnorth ahead.

The Chromatik fans that were in attendance - all 56,000 of them - were in full throat during the match. If hosting the IBC did anything, it was show the potential of this squad.

Now, they've a chance to build upon it.

Regardless of the sport, in tournaments past, Sarzonian teams put added emphasis on beating Valanora. It got to the point where Vanorian media speculated that Sarzonian teams applied too much pressure on themselves by openly striving to defeat Valanora.

This away match against the Vanors would be a welcome relief for starting shooting guard Mike West, as he started his first match of the current edition of the International Basketball Championships since his father, legendary Stars manager Henry West passed away.

West scored just 11 points on 4-for-16 shooting, but forward Harold Blevins picked up the slack by scoring a game-high 27 points to lead Sarzonia to an 83-74 victory to improve to 2-0.

After the match, manager Thomas Manningham was seen with his hand on Mike West's shoulder. He said Mike West was still dealing with grief after Henry West's passing.

"You have good days and bad days when it comes to grief," Manningham said. "I'm in my mid-50s, my dad's been gone for 22 years, and I still miss him. I used to call him after every game I managed at A-levels and go over scenarios with him. As I understand it, Mike West would get advice from Henry. That's a void you just don't replace."

Sarzonia jumped out to an early six-point lead in the first quarter and rode the momentum from a rare Trent Klatt 3-pointer to take a nine-point lead into halftime. Valanora went on a 14-2 run to cut the Sarzonia lead to four at the end of the third quarter, but could get no closer as Blevins keyed a 10-0 run by the Stars with a steal of an inbounds pass and a coast-to-coast dunk to put Sarzonia up 71-62 at the 5:17 mark of the fourth quarter.

"It was a huge lift to have Mike back in the lineup," Blevins said. "It just showed a lot of character."

"I'm grateful to the team for picking me up," Mike West said. "They did a great job."

International Basketball Championship 33: Reforms in Hispino basketball to be done
Fans raises concerns in keeping Esteban as head coach after 0-2 start puts Round of 16 hopes in shambles

MANDRID - The Royal Hispinas Basketball Federation (FRHB) office in the capital has been littered with protesting fans after the national team's loss against Baker Park which puts them near the bottom of the group stages of the International Basketball Championship (IBC) 33. The Golden Sealions started their IBC campaign on a low note, getting booed by their own fans at the Palacio de Reino de Hispinas after a dismal showing in the second half of the game caused them to lose their first game against lower-ranked Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom.

Alfredo Esteban's job security went even more at risk with another poor showing when they visited CommAir Arena in Atlantian Oceania's Baker Park, with Salvador Aguila and Cergio Arebalo almost salvaging a scrappy win when they staged a comeback early in the fourth quarter, but at the closing stages of the game, when the Hispinos are down by 1, Marcela Picazo's clutch abilities, or lack thereof, was evident, giving away the crucial possession with the shot clock off, and them forcing a foul in the closing moments. Baker Park managed to shoot one of two free throws, with Andy Carmichael intentionally bricking the second one with less than a second remaining to secure the unlikely win for the #72 ranked team.

Hispinas' struggles in the basketball front was compounded by the lackluster performance the basketball clubs had in the recently concluded IUBC Trophy tournament, when neither the basketball teams from Mandrid nor Seviguio reached the group stages, and the sole representatives from Vallezul bombed out of their group with a 1-5 showing. This has caused some fans to storm the office of the FRHB where Walter Laganson was working. As fans tried to bypass security to express their anger and frustration to the former international coach, Laganson held an impromptu media session to address their concerns one by one.

Among the promises made by the head of the FRHB is to re-evaluate Esteban's position as head coach during the halfway break whether he is still up to the job or not, and increase the number of games in the Liga Hispinas Baloncesto to improve the quality of play and have better representation from the Rushmori nation in the upcoming editions of the IUBC competition. Fans are expecting the departure of the Cebuenas-raised coach after their home game against last seeds Japhetic in Group H, although they are already expecting losses when they host the Rebs from Abanhfleft, and visit the Principality of Lisander in their next two games.

In commemoration of the 12th anniversary of Abanhfleft's first and so far only title in the International Basketball Championships, Crescent News Network Sports Channel a five-episode documentary television series that seeks to shine the spotlight on the lives of the five players who started most often for the Abanhfleft Rebolusyonaryos. Take a rare behind-the-scenes look on the careers of Dylan Kapowski, Boris Barry, Jan Harris, Newton Isaacs, and Leo Baxter in this new series titled Biography: IBC 21.

Biography: IBC 21

Chapter I: Dylan Kapowski

Part Two: Undeserving

They called it the Holy Catholic Revolution because that was what its leader, Renald Gullotti, called it. But everyone with half a brain cell knew that there was nothing holy nor Catholic about it at all. Gullotti had just put his own extremist take on the Church’s teachings and decided that that was enough for him to run an entire state. I wasn’t even Catholic, though I was raised non-denominational Christian, and I knew that Gullotti was just talking shit from his ass and wanted to excommunicate the Church in Abanhfleft before it could excommunicate him. Gullotti and his supporters had a great starting position to start their “Almighty’s Republic of Abanhfleft”, getting hold of five of the seven Capital Islands and then spreading out to some of the militarily important provinces such as Dorfdifving and Dav and Tentenaraya. Kind of like what Abanhfleft did in its early history when it spread out and conquered everyone else in the vicinity. The whole family evacuated from Riuwiee just three days after Gullotti’s forces killed our soldiers during the May 26 parades, ending up back in Wappinger. The steel mills were on overdrive providing the steel with which to build the tanks and vehicles we needed to beat back the Gullottists after the ones in Dorfdifving fell to them so Dad immediately got back his job of managing an entire steel mill.

I was a teenager at the time, and like all teenage boys, I wanted to do everything that I could to help the country destroy the Gullottists trying to plunge the country into a modern-day Dark Age. So I enlisted with the Army, hoping that I would get to join a unit which was actually fighting the Gullottists. But then during my physical, the Army doctors saw that my eyesight was not the best. I wasn’t blind as a bat, but I did have some difficulty telling apart faraway objects. I passed the rest of my physical with flying colors though, so instead of kicking me out of the barracks outright, the Army assigned me to a media unit. To anyone who doesn’t know what a media unit is, it’s basically the place where the Army sends people who otherwise would have been cleared for duty were it not for one or two problems with their physicals, and then there were those whom the Army put in media units because they were the sons and nephews and sometimes daughters and nieces of very important people, who wanted their young ones to be seen serving in the armed forces but not really risking their lives in the line of duty. Media units like the one I was assigned to usually did combat photography and video, but we only went out once all combat in a particular area had stopped. We were only there to shoot pictures and video of the Gullottists surrendering. The more messed up stuff like the mass crucifixions of those who didn’t want to Gullotti’s particular brand of Christianity were left to actual combat photographers and pressmen embedded in the frontline units. It was a cushy job, a quiet job, and I absolutely hated it.

I already said that I enlisted because I wanted to take a rifle and shoot those damned Gullottists. And I certainly wasn’t going to be able to do any of that while sitting around on my ass in a media unit waiting to get called for some propaganda photo op for the Army or whatever. I wanted to get out there and fight the enemy in Kimmirut or Pilken or wherever the Army wanted me to go. But I didn’t get to do it. I spent the whole Holy Catholic Revolution in that media unit, and I never saw any combat at all, save for the few times that our bases got shelled by Gullottist artillery. I left the Army as a sergeant, but I only got promoted because I looked good on TV and they didn’t want someone so photogenic to be referred to as just “Private Kapowski” whenever they picked me to answer interviews. And I didn’t feel deserving of the rank at all, especially after I’d learned of what had happened to Leo and Newt, how Leo’s squad was massacred by an emplaced machine gun and he was the only survivor, and how Newt broke his back when his helicopter crashed on its way to a combat zone. They had fought and bled for the country, and they deserved every single bit of praise that they got. I didn’t deserve anything. I still feel like I don’t deserve anything that I got from the Revolution, not the rank or the medals.

Maybe that was why I didn't go into acting like I thought I would when I was younger. A few producers from both TV and the movies saw my Army interviews and offered me a role or two, but I didn't want to do it. I wanted to distance myself from the Army as much as possible, and I didn't want to become an actor because of something I didn't deserve. Once Riuwiee State reopened, I went right back to university and finished my degree. I still played basketball for the uni, but without the boys, it just wasn't the same. Which is why my decision to take part in the FBA Draft was a surprise. It might not have been a surprise to a lot of people but it was a surprise to me! I was surprised I went into the draft because like I said, I didn't really cover myself in glory once I went back to Riu State. But I still got picked in the first round. "With the eighth pick of the 2012 FBA Draft, the San Seriffe Black Panthers select Dylan Kapowski from Riuwiee State University!" Like, could you even imagine telling that to my past self? He'd never have believed me!

And now I got to experience firsthand just how much of a pain in the ass playing against Leo Baxter was! Being in the same conference as him and the Black Ops, it wasn't a surprise that the Black Panthers had to play them at least twice. At least we weren't in the same division, unlike Jan Harris in Releinthi! But San Seriffe were playoff contenders as well, so meetings with Malabon in the postseason were inevitable. Almost always Malabon and Leo had our number, but sometimes we would get one over them too. Things got heated too, like they always do. Usually it was just pushing and shoving but then there were times that the fists started flying. And you know us Flefts, when things start flying, we fly right in. Except me, of course. I knew that I didn't know anything about fighting or brawling so I just stayed away from any fights that were going on. And because of that, I got accused of being a pretty boy player. "Larong pogi lang ang alam nyan!" they said of me. "Pag nagsuntukan, takbo kagad sa locker room!" Okay, maybe I'm a bit more concerned and careful with my looks than I have any business being! But I'm just saying that I don't want to get involved in something where I have no idea what to do. Cowards' way out? Maybe it is. But it's the truth, and now I've told it.

Anyway, where was I? Ah, yes. The Malabon-San Seriffe rivalry. To be honest, it's not as heated as the one between Malabon and Releinthi, or Releinthi and Wanda Island, or basically any two teams in the Capital Division. But there's definitely some bad blood between the two teams. Before our time, they were fighting for draft picks, but now they were fighting for championships. So emotions were almost always high whenever we played each other. And it only got worse once we were in the postseason. It didn't matter if we were facing each other in just the first round of the playoffs or the conference finals. We were always going to give our all against the Black Ops, and they were going to do the same to us. And whenever everything was on the line, that's when Leo Baxter shines brightest. Three times Leo played out of his skin to help Malabon beat us in the playoffs. The fourth time, it was in the conference finals for the third time in four seasons, Leo was still playing like a man possessed, but he didn't have his usual supporting cast. Their playoff run really cost them in terms of injuries. Even Leo was carrying a knock or two, I think. Now, I'm not trying to diminish our victory or anything, but I'm pretty sure that Malabon's depleted roster that season played a part in the Black Panthers sweeping the Black Ops to claim the Central Conference title. This was before the league was reshuffled to make more geographically concise conferences and divisions, mind.

But now we had to deal with another powerhouse of a team before we could even think about the FBA Championship. Ever since Leo Baxter went into the FBA, everyone knew that the team he went to would be the biggest in the league for as long as he was playing. And it was indeed what happened. The Malabon Black Ops became the biggest team in the FBA, and to this day, even though he's been retired for six years already and gone on to do other things, the Black Ops remain one of the most popular FBA teams inside and outside the country. But there was another team, another team that fought against Malabon year in and year out for the right to be declared champions of Abanhfleft, and that team was the Markovsky Red Army. Like Malabon and San Seriffe, Markovsky were a team that were down in the dumps before the early 2010s, and then they got the second pick of the 2013 draft, and they used it to pick Newton Isaacs. Yes, the same Newton Isaacs who was one of only five survivors out of 35 on that helicopter that was shot down over Releinthi North Airport, the same Newt who spent four years in rehab just learning to walk once again and then went straight to the FBA Draft. Everyone thought that Markovsky had just wasted their pick on a goddamn bust. There was just no way a recovering cripple should have even been in the picture for the draft, let alone the Markovsky Red Army! But he did it. The son of a bitch actually did it. Newt got drafted into Markovsky, and he immediately turned that club around.

So that was the team that we were facing in the FBA Finals. Newt and Markovsky had already been to the Finals twice before, but this was my and San Seriffe’s first time here after so many years. Those two finals before this one, Markovsky pushed Malabon all the way before the Black Ops finally won out, and because of that experience Markovsky just swept us aside, literally. They beat us at their place; they beat us at ours; they beat us, plain and simple. Still, it felt like it was total and utter vindication for Newt once he lifted that trophy. Vindication for all that he had gone through, both in the Revolution and on the court, one big massive “Eff you!” to all the haters. Of course, we didn’t know that he was already doing painkillers and coke and that kind of shit at that time, and that makes me wonder how he was even able to do all the things that he did back then while dealing with both his addiction and his hurting back.

Post-game interview after the game

"Coach Woodrow, your 2nd game, another close game, another loss. Your thoughts?" a reporter asked.

"Well," Elroy started, "we shot better than the first one. Thank God for that. But I'm more concerned that we didn't pass the ball more to have a better shot, and we defended less than when the opponent is shooting. We only had 2 blocks and 10 steals as a team today, compared to the 7 and 17 from the first one."

"Kodey, you were scoreless in the first game, but today, you had 16. How was the transition from a less active game to having the most points in the team?" another reporter asked Kodey Nelson, a 5' 11" 18-year-old guard that is still in college but is already the point guard starter for the United Adaikes national basketball team.

"First of all, I'm grateful for Coach Elroy to bring me here to the International Championships. Coach told me to observe some games and even the first game on how it is played at the international level. I'm only to make sure that I get my teammates in the right place to take an open shot," Kodey replied.

Another reporter asked Lamont Mayer, "Lamont, 15 points, and perfect in the 3-point line, shooting 5-for-5. You were 2-for-2 for 3-point field goals in the first game but still had bad shots throughout that game. Was shooting your top priority for this game?"

"It's good to be shooting well in a game," Lamont replied, "but if that doesn't convert to wins, then that'll be a bigger problem for the team."

"Fourteen lead changes, seven ties in that game. Coach, your thoughts?"

"It just shows how we want to win. We were tied in the first quarter. We managed to shorten the lead they set by the end of the first half in the third quarter. We were tied in one time in the fourth, managed to be leading before that last play. We just got lost in defense for that open shot by the Kohnhead 3 seconds left in the game. We just have to ensure that all the bad things that happened in these two games will not happen in the next games."

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
Kohnhead 17 41(24) 65(24) 79(14)
United Adaikes 17 29(12) 58(29) 78(20)

Whats up with Kavinsky's small ball?
excerpt from http://www.basketblog.swe

VIRGINIA - It was a home game facing off newcomers Ardengrad. The scene was set in the Virginian Indoor Arena! But in the end Ardengrad came out victorious and the Fronteirsmen fans are left wandering whats going on? The team managed to get a nice amount of points with a total of 78, but that was due to for the most part Ardengrad's faster paced offense forcing the team to catch up. Barry Witt and Tommy Foxx proved themselves int his game, garnering over 25 points each as the team made drastic changes early tot he game plan allowing the pair to take quicker shots when possible. This in turn was a result of Ardengrads stellar defense. A very aggressive bunch that would attack the lanes on offense and flop for fouls with will and most importantly aggressively go after steals. This lead to some odd scorelines for Ardengrad's players. Al Pine in particular had a near triple double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 7 steals and even 8 assists.

Questions are now being brought up about the relevancy of Coach Kavinski's play style. His game was always about slow paced games that emphasized passing the ball till you knew for sure you could score, but this game with the Moliza game has shown maybe it's time to think about speeding things up. Even domestically the game is starting to do so in Southwest Eastnorth. Teams like the Big Sandy Roos and the Hartlepool Teal Bears are moving away towards a faster style of game where they will put in more shots and take mosre risks, Maybe its time for SWEN to attempt this? It couldn't hurt with Chromatika and Maytanjia coming up.

Morning Glory - Your Simple Nationwide Morning Newspaper

Legendary Saguenay football coach Baek Sang-Joon announces retirement after 16 years, at age 58

SOUTH BEND, Saguenay -Legendary coach Baek Sang-Joon, age 58, will retire immediately after 16 years leading the Saguenay Fighting Irish, and is planning to inform the Fighting Irish players and coaching staff on the full team meeting tomorrow.

Baek retires from Saguenay with a 178-36 record, 7 New Year's Six bowl victories, and 3 Tiger Bowl titles in 2038, 2041 and 2050. He retires from Saguenay as the winningest coach in school history. Baek, four-time national coach of the year, will remain as the member of the university's Board of Governors and Athletics and Recreation Board of Management and Operations.

'I would like to thank the Universite du Saguenay for 22 years of service I have been able to offer as the linebackers coach, defensive coordinator and eventually the head football coach,' Baek said in the university's press release this morning. 'After many months of deliberation, including my recent weeks in the NationStates College Football (NSCF) tournament, I have decided to step down as the coach of the most historic program in this country and to offer the program an opportunity for their next phase of life.'

Offensive coordinator and longtime offensive line coach Mario Chun-Kim, 42, has been named as the interim head coach for the program. A national and international coaching search is expected to take place over the next month or two, with university open to candidates from abroad.

'It was a tough decision to make, but I do think that it's perfect timing to hand over the reins to a capable coach who will continue the tradition of winning at South Bend. Our program is no doubt in a tremendous shape, with their stable of all-Quebecois and excellent coaches, and it is still possible for a run to be made during the NSCF spring season. Our facilities are one of the best in the multiverse, following the recent renovations to our De Bergerac Athletic Complex, and we have a top 3 recruiting class that could be further bolstered with international recruiting window,' wrote Baek in the same release. 'With myself heading into the sunset, it is just the most opportune time possible for the Saguenay Fighting Irish to transition into the new era.'

Added Chun-Kim: 'I am delighted to lead this program as the interim head coach of the football program at the Universite du Saguenay. I have coached on the offensive side of the ball under coach Baek for many years, and I would like to thank him for his service to the Quebecois and international college football. He is one of the greatest coaches out there, at any level, and I am happy to continue coaching at the most historic program in the country. Go Irish!'

While the timing of the announcement comes as a major surprise to many, Baek's retirement has been planned out in years up to now, with Baek having contemplated retirements in a series of rumours over last three years. He has most recently purchased a home in Reneegrad, a medium-sized city in Quebec City metropolitan area, to be closer to his daughter and her family.

With Baek's retirement, Northwestern's Iago-Luc Montgomery is now the longest-tenured active coach at a QIS program. Montgomery will be entering his 29th season as the head coach of the Attawapiskat school at the start of August.

A linebacker at Northwestern (2014-17), Baek had a six year QFL career with his hometown Attawapiskat Broncos, where he was part of the 2019 Imperial Bowl team. Following retirement, Baek served as a linebacker coach at the University of Prince Raoul Islands in 2025. After three years, he coached the Pater Dei CHS for two years, before being picked up by Aaron Chang to serve as the linebacker coach and recruiting assistant.

Baek made a name for himself as a linebacker coach and recruiter at South Bend, with over 6 all-Quebecois linebackers and Hector Kweon trophy first runner-up Vontaze Ahn to his credit. He was instrumental in the Saguenay program's 2030 and 2033 Tiger Bowl championship teams, and served as the program's defensive coordinator for two seasons before being named the head coach ahead of 2036 season.

Inheriting a top 10 program that had won five times in the 21st century leading up to his appointment, he followed up with high expectations placed on him with 6 consecutive 10-win seasons after his appointment, including 2038 and 2041 Tiger Bowl titles. In both runs, the Fighting Irish completed went undefeated with 14-0 record by beating St. Croix Bleu et Blanc and Keewatinook Huskies.

As the head coach of the Saguenay program, which prides itself as one of the only two in the country to remain independent, Baek has won won 10 or more games in 14 of his 16 seasons with the Fighting Irish, and earned New Year's Six bowl invitations in 14 years.

Since the first two national titles, Saguenay returned to the Tiger Bowl play-offs (tied in with two of six NY6 bowls every year) five times, and have only won once in 2050. In the finals, Fighting Irish fell short to Queen's College in 2045, Northwestern in 2047, and St. Croix in 2049, before winning over Keewatinook in 2050.

During his tenure with the Fighting Irish, Saguenay finished in the top 20 rankings in all 16 years, with 13 years inside the top 10 of the poll. He also led the Fighting Irish to the Apple Bowl (2037, 2038, 2040, 2044, 2049), Camelia Bowl (2045, 2050), Commonwealth Forces Bowl (2046), Heartland Bowl (2047), and Moogoonghwa Bowl (2041), and is nicknamed 'The Apple Picker' due to his 5-2 record at the Apple Bowl, played just two hours away from South Bend.

There's always a lot of talk among Sarzonian sporting teams of so-called trap matches, that is, matches against less anticipated competition that happen right before matches against either a highly-ranked side or a major sporting rival.

Less talked about was the notion of a letdown after a big match. For the Sarzonian national basketball team, that talk was muted as they got set to face an unranked Rick Perry side in front of a less than sellout crowd of 17,321 at the Henry West Centre in Woodstock. Fresh off a nine-point victory over third ranked Valanora, an opponent the Stars have had trouble with seemingly regardless of sport, the talk centred more on how the team would continue to support guard Mike West, in particular with him starting his first match at the arena now named after his late father.

Sarzonia did so by defeating Rick Perry 69-62 to improve to 3-0. Mike West led the way with 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including three 3-pointers. He also dished out seven assists as he spelled Ben Thomas at the point after Thomas went down hard whilst trying to drive the lane. He was diagnosed with a hip contusion and was held out for precautionary reasons, manager Thomas Manningham said after the match.

"Really, if it were Matchday 9 or 10 and we were facing a must-win, we could have put Ben back out there," Manningham said. "But it's early enough where we wanted to make sure he's rested for later in the tournament."

The Stars kept pace with co-hosts Bollonich, who defeated the other unranked team in Group A Brookstation by a 76-54 scoreline. Valanora bounced back from its home defeat to the Stars with a 95-71 triumph over Hebitaka, whom the Stars will face back at Henry West Centre on Matchday 4. The team close out the first half of the group stage with a match away to Bollonich. Manningham said he was telling his team to not get too far ahead of themselves as he warned them about Hebitaka potentially being a trap match.

"Yes, they're ranked, but looking at the group table, it's tempting to want to focus our energies on Bollonich since they're also 3-0 and they're ahead of us by point differential," he said. "That's the kind of thing that can trip up any team."

With Essena riding low in the group and a couple of tough games against Trolleborg and Pemecutan coming up, Nick Davidson experimented with his rotation a little for the first time, giving Jacques Brazier some rest and handing Rory Hamilton his first minutes; Nate Evans also earned a start as Tom Powell went to the bench. Thoughts of an easy win were quickly dismissed, though, as Julius Bentley and Roger Palawan exploded out of the gate and put up an 11 point lead midway through the first quarter. Defensive hustle and physical presence against a somewhat undersized Essena lineup made the difference, however, and Hannasea had a lead by the end of the first quarter that they didn't relinquish. Hamilton made the first double-double of the IBC33 campaign; he and Nathan Shapiro heavily outrebounded Essena. Evans, who coughed up 7 turnovers, failed to make the most of his chance running the offence as his 3 pointer just would not drop all night, while Powell netted 5 in his reduced minutes off the bench. "We weren't taking them lightly," said Davidson afterwards, "We want to have a look at some different rotations and see what our best combinations are, so you can expect more changes to the lineup." Davidson said he was "pleased by the team's defensive effort".

DROP IT DOWN!: First Road Win Was A Bit Nervy

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Nov 08, 2021 12:54 pm

After we fell to a buzzer-beater in Game 2 of the Opening Homestand, the Hoops-Jags of TJUN-ia were licking their wounds and preparing for battle once more. Bao Zhou didn't really mind that we lost in the way we did, as it showed that "we still have work to be done" in order to reach the elite level deserving of our #2 ranking. With that in mind, we headed out to Trolleborg for our first road game of the season against a pretty good #24 host coached by Vladimir Finn. The Trolls debuted in the same BoF as us and have done a lot more with that - winning that BoF, reaching a WC and winning the CoH as well. Getting anything over this nation would certainly be a confidence boost for the football team back home.

So off we went and this one would certainly be a bit of a tight one. DeMarcus Winston was, once again, ballin' despite his 33 years of life on this earth with 30 points on the day and everyone ese was doing alright too. But the Trolls were never too far behind, with Ruud Aarst and Fergal Finni both contrbuting 20 points each in an effort to keep the #2 Hoops-Jags within reach in front of a passionate home fanbase. This was the theme all game as Finn refused to let Zhou have his way but in the end, we did just enough. 77-62 may look convincing at first, but this 15-point win was closer than the scoreline suggests and we will certainly take it either way.

We're back up to 2nd now, only behind the still-undefeated Hannasea, but we still have plenty of time to try and regain top spot. We shall return to the Unity Centre soon enough as Riverside hosts Pemecutan, our mates from the NSTT ranked at #28. They're basketball program has come leaps and bounds in recent years, so they shouldn't be brushed aside at all. GO JAGS!

ALPHABET HOOP - THOUGHTS ON MYTANAR BASKETBALL
by Almedina Radovanovic

MYTANIJA APPEAR TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE AFTER MIXED START

A dominant performance and victory got Mytanija back onto a positive footing at the International Basketball Championships. Moliza were the unfortunate victims, on the receiving end of a 100-68 thumping which showed a real gulf in class between the two nations. Mirko Lazetic’s starting five of Juric, Papac, Ateljevic, Djokanovic and Fomin really got things off to a good start in the opening minutes as Mytanija raced out to a 13-2 lead. Things didn’t get much better for Moliza as second and third-string Mytanars came onto the court and caused them problems at both ends of the court. It is a result which will encourage everybody back home after the team lost out in the first of two potential group deciders against Chromatika.

Uzejir Juric hasn’t always been in contention for a national team position, never mind the starting point guard job, but his performances domestically have meant that Mirko Lazetic couldn’t ignore him and given the occasional errors from Damian Tsitnikov and injuries of Zahir Dedic it has left Juric as the last man standing. He had a great game against Moliza here, controlling the pace of the game and directing his team mates out on the court. Tactically it is invaluable to have a player like Juric on the court, almost an on-court coach for the team.

It is clear that Juric’s relationship with Mario Djokanovic could be a pivotal one for the national team too. The pair have a great understanding from playing alongside one another for Atletik in the MKA Liga and they combined for highlight reel moments with revealing regularity. It is clear that the two could form one of the great partnerships of this IBC as long as they can replicate this form throughout the competition. It helps to have options like that when the likes of Evgeny Fomin and Zelimir Ateljevic – both excellent against Moliza – are not quite firing.

When you look down the Mytanar roster there is a good deal of strength in depth, particularly amongst the teams’ big men. Coach Lazetic would probably be happy to play any one of Fomin, Djokanovic, Lekov, Bevk, Bychkov or Nuhanovic and any combination thereof. It is striking that Bychkov – a sure-fire starter a few years ago – now appears to be third choice and perhaps even more so with Tose Lekov falling to second-choice power forward. You have to think there’s very few national teams that would be unhappy with Lekov in their starting five so for Mytanija to be able to leave him on the bench and select Djokanovic shows just how quickly the game has improved on these shores.

A disappointing result against Chromatika will have hurt the team but the key thing is that they have beaten the other two opponents they have played and appear to be repairing the damage that that loss did to the team’s hopes of topping this group. Qualifying from the group in second will mean a tougher play-off match-up, but Mytanija still have an opportunity to right the wrong in the return fixture against the Chromatik team. If Mytanija can keep the level of performance seen against Moliza up for the remainder of the group stage you wouldn’t bet against them doing exactly that.

Lions look to put close finishes behind them with blowout of Orion Islands

Nova Anglicana's IBC 33 journey hasn't been the easiest so far. The Lions fell behind unheralded United Adaikes early in the first game, only digging themselves out of a twelve-point first-quarter deficit midway through the fourth, needing a free throw and a layup by Jimmy Haynes to finally forge ahead, 60-59. Although they hit enough free throws down the stretch to guarantee a win, a late three-pointer made it a three-point game at the end. The Lions were more or less bailed out by the United Adaikes proclivity for fouling, hitting twenty-four free throws to get to their less-than-impressive total of 69 points.

The Lions' escape from United Adaikes didn't exactly inspire confidence going into their next matchup against top seed in the group Græntfjall, but they managed to hang tough with the Snow Wolves. Alain Colbert was the star of the show for the Lions, with his long arms pulling down 14 rebounds and harassing the giant Benjamin Iirosson. Although Iirosson's broad shoulders and large frame led to twenty-three points, only Colbert and Colin Klein's efforts kept him under thirty. The Snow Wolves had already blown out the Orion Islands, displaying a deft shooting touch while racking up over 100 points, so sticking with them counted as a monumental effort. The Lions forged ahead in the fourth quarter, but the Snow Wolves' Antoníus Lorisson hit a pair of threes just as the Lions went cold from the field and fumbled away multiple chances to tie the game. Still, they hit a couple of free throws to keep the game close, and even had a chance to win the game on the final possession. Reggie LaPointe, normally a three-point gunner, pulled Hartmann Paschalisson into the air with a pump-fake and drove to the hoop, only to see Iirosson cruelly reject his layup attempt and the Lions' chance at victory as the buzzer sounded.

Two disparate efforts led to two different results, even if the Lions' superior effort resulted in a loss, but both were uncomfortably close for Nova Anglican partisans. That pattern changed with their game against the Orion Islands. The Orion Islanders had already lost by thirty-five to Græntfjall and by twenty-nine to Valentine Z, but even though they gave a superior effort against Nova Anglicana, it wasn't nearly enough. Lonnie Brewer, the Islands' star forward, led the team with twenty-four points, but the iron was unkind to the rest of the squad, hitting just eleven field goals between them. Brewer scored fifteen of the team's twenty-nine points in the first half, but despite his best efforts, the Lions were simply hotter from the floor, taking a twelve-point lead into the break. The third quarter saw LaPointe hit three bombs from deep and Brewer cool off, leading to a 64-39 margin at the end of the third. Muir, Meyer, Montgomery, Villeneuve, and Brooks played the entire fourth, and the Orion Islands made some headway against them, but the Lions cruised to an 81-61 victory. Four of five starters scored in double figures, led by LaPointe with sixteen, and the balanced attack proved to be an effective panacea for their close-game struggles.

Up next for the Lions is Kohnhead. The 23rd-ranked squad began with an upset loss to Valentine Z, 91-77, before edging United Adaikes 79-78, and being blown out 94-65 by Græntfjall. They haven't exactly played up to their ranking, but that doesn't mean the Lions should underestimate them. Valentine Z have surprised, and there's no shame in losing to the Snow Wolves, while the Lions know all too well the dangers of playing close games against United Adaikes. Haynes, who played so well against United Adaikes, Colbert who starred against the Snow Wolves, and LaPointe the leaders against the Orion Islands, will be crucial in overcoming Kohnhead. Whether this is another nailbiter or an easy cruise will largely depend on the efforts of those three.
